- #4 Creating your own personal LinkedIn profile is a great way to brand yourself as a successful professional that employers want to meet. Think of LinkedIn as your resume that never sleeps. But a lot more. It's your professional brand in the world. It’s the result you actually want up top when someone Googles you.
- #5 Whether you are a college student who will soon be entering the workplace or an established professional, LinkedIn can be a valuable resource to use in conducting your job search or in establishing and maintaining contact with other professionals in your field. It’s who you are to employers, grad schools, future colleagues, and people you’re going to want to stay connected to. Unlike Facebook, which encourages you to share what movie you saw last night and where you went on vacation, LinkedIn is focused on people and how to make connections to learn more about jobs and industry leaders in their field. While many students know about and have used LinkedIn, a large number of students have either never heard of it or say I started a LinkedIn profile, but I never finished it and I’ve never gone back. The value of LinkedIn is connections. Building connections on LinkedIn is easy once you understand the value and really get the hang of it. And LinkedIn is the place to find and be found. The site has well over a million and a half student jobs and internships. And more than 9 in 10 companies use LinkedIn to recruit new hires. If you’re not on LinkedIn, you simply don’t exist in the working world.
- #6 The most important part of LinkedIn is your profile. A LinkedIn Profile will increase your online visibility and help will help to create your professional brand. Having a complete LinkedIn Profile, including photo, will help you to showcase your professional skills and previous experiences to prospective employers. Develop a compelling online presence. Cover letters and resumes aren’t enough. You need to stand out online. Having a complete LinkedIn profile makes you 40 times more likely to receive opportunities through the network, so it’s important that you take the time to fill it out properly and make sure it stands out from competition.
- #9 Headlines are key! Students are encouraged to highlight 3 qualities (Psych Major, Aspiring Counselor) OR they can put their internship title. Your profile is not the place to be shy! Write a concise but descriptive headline like "XYZ University honors student & aspiring PR associate," “Entry-level creative professional,” or “Finance major seeking investment banking internship.”
- #31 With 1-st degree connections you can email them directly and with 2-nd and 3-rd degree connections you may be able to send an InMail or contact them through a mutual connection.
- #34 Introductions – Go to a company page, find who’re connected to and if it’s a second or third degree connection then ask for introductions. This is excellent for cold-calling.
