Workplace Book
What is a commonplace book? My understanding of a commonplace book is less about the book
aspect and more of a method to compile knowledge, and ideas from quotes in order to reflect and
gain a greater understanding through self reflection. In a sense it is like a mental scrapbook. A place
to store ideas and work through them in order to gain a better understanding of the work as a whole.
So what made it into my scrapbook and why. Looking over the past 5 weeks of commonplace
entries and the 20 quotes that I have accumulated a few patterns seemed to develop. The first pattern
that I discovered upon reflection is when a quote has intense or impactful imagery. This pattern
doesn't surprise me. Why write anything if you're not interested in ... Show more content on

Having a place to collect, store, and reflect on my thoughts has helped me gain a better
understanding of the assigned works that we are assigned in class. Not only that but it got me into a
habit of writing more. While the commonplace book started as a chore it has helped me put my
thoughts in order and improve upon my writing habits. What started as a laborious task turned into a
path of self improvement, reflection, and a method of creating a bulk of work to pull from to better

How Did Johannes Gutenberg Impact The Printing Press
In 1454, Johannes Gutenberg crafted numerous volumes of the Catholic Bible with his printing
press. These Latin Bibles sold at prices affordable to the middle class, when previously only the
wealthiest churches could afford them. Although it was not the first printing press, Gutenberg's
printing press positively impacted Western Civilization for centuries, because it spread literacy and
Christianity, and allowed books to become commonplace and affordable.
Gutenberg built upon the success of others. China and Japan printed with engraved wooden blocks
as early as the eighth and ninth centuries, with movable type invented in the eleventh century. By
the fourteenth century, Europe used the same techniques. The Encyclopedia Britannica explains his
merging of ideas: "Johannes Gutenberg is generally credited with... the invention of modern
printing: the use of dies to make individual pieces of type that could be assembled as required and
then reused, and the use of a press by which sharp impressions could be made many times over, on
both sides of a sheet of paper ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An estimate by Susan Bauer in her textbook, "The Story of The World," states: "... Gutenberg and
twenty helpers printed 450 Bibles in one year. If twenty monks had tried to write out these Bibles by
hand, it would have taken them ninety years each." Gutenberg's easily accessible Bibles spread
knowledge of Christianity, because any literate person could now read the word of God anytime he

The National Automotive Museum Preserves And Maintains...
Founded in 1989, the National Automotive Museum preserves and maintains more than two–
hundred cars for the public to admire. Projects that go into working with the museum include
archiving both old and new knowledge of cars, filing research away on cars sold after Harrah's death
for new owners, digitizing new information using the computer system called PastPerfect, and
transcribing the journal of a man to the computer for record keeping. All of these tasks meant
learning new skills in maintaining a museum's behind the scene collection as well as researching the
collection's history. These projects help the museum function as well as provide a source of income
so that the museum can stay open. The first project was archiving in the museum library to learn
organizational skills. The automotive museum stores journals, magazines, books, and media such as
film all in a library in the back of the museum. The articles and journals within this library date back
to the early car magazines in the early twentieth century when the car was a novel machine, and
goes all the way up to the most recent editions that feature electric cars from Tesla. The project was
to make sure everything went back where it belonged in the system. Proper storage of the books
ensures that the library stays organized for research on the cars. Another aspect of that project is to
add new works to the library. As previously stated, the library is in possession of magazines and
books from contemporary times

Analysis Of ' Fog Falling On Cedars '
Taking Flight I sit in this AP Language and Composition class trying to decipher the essence of the
unending annotations and floods of random texts for the past quarter. Little did I know that I would
be taking flight and soaring through the smallest details and threads of literary devices and
techniques of analyzing language. Before this class, I looked at a book, aware that it was filled with
potential symbolism and crucial themes that were definitely worth considering. Yet, I often paid far
less attention to the way words are crafted in efforts to create a beautiful masterpiece. Who knew
that the jargon used in Snow Falling on Cedars could significantly shape the overall tone of the
book? From the years leading up to this class, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Welty describes the first steps of reading as "human, but inward...It is to me the voice of the story or
poem itself" (Welty 11). Picking up from my knowledge of personification, I gained a new
perspective on how books play an impact on how one thinks when reading a piece, as it describes
the voice of the book as a human. Having said, this gave me the idea that books establish a personal
connection between itself and the reader. Following through with the next chapter, Welty recognizes
the value of the summer trips she experienced with her family. She makes an interesting analogy
between her trips and reading by calling them "stories. Not only in form, but in their taking on
direction, movement, development, change...each trip made its particular revelation, though I could
not have found words for it" (68). Connecting this to the title of chapter two, "learning to see" when
reading requires looking closely at the small details and soaking it in, in a way that one can look
back upon it later. Once one starts to carefully listen and look at the fluidity and rich ingredients a
book has, he/she can find their own voice, which leads into the next chapter. Reading spurs
imagination which then allows one to explore their own inner being. Welty best describes her
encounter of this by explaining "my imagination takes its strength and guides its direction from what

English 125 Syllabus
The concept of requirements for the English major at Yale University is based upon a desire to
inform, and, as explained by the description of English 125 and 126 on the department website, are
meant to provide: "generous introduction to the abiding formal and thematic concerns of the English
literary tradition." A resounding emphasis is put on the benefit the student will receive from the
skills that the classes require. However, students would be able to "come away with a sharpened
awareness of what it means to read with the attentiveness that great literature demands" regardless
of the content of the syllabus, as long as there was a focus on close reading and form that was
adhered to by the professor. The question that remains is: what is ... Show more content on

With a syllabus centered around woman poets, students would be exposed to more
socioeconomically diverse group of poets. While the 'major' poets of the English 125 syllabus were
all born into some degree of wealth, the women who acted as supplementary readings for the course
were of more varied backgrounds. Isabella Whitney, for example, was born to a lower class English
family. Her experiences in life are reflected in her poetry, and starkly contrast the poetry of the
'major' men. While the traditional male poets may not have had the same views, they were privy to a
lot of similar experiences due to their class standing, and therefore tackled some of the same issues.
To have a different viewpoint and style of writing in terms of not only gender, but of class, is crucial
in the development of an English major. The current syllabus requires students to be complacent
with the multitude under–developed female characters that are created through the eyes of men, and
satisfied with the few women who are given deeper personalities, like the Wife of Bath in Chaucer's
Canterbury Tales. Such confining works lead to conversation that automatically focuses on the
negative when it comes to gender–that women are disregarded and often powerless when depicted
from the male point of view, unless they are overtly sexualized. From a modern stance, this is seen
as a sexist and unfair representation, but based on the current material offered in English 125, it
seems as though it is an injustice that must be dealt with to understand the nuances of pivotal
English poetry. However, a deeper focus on women poets would eliminate, or at least add dimension
to, this type of conversation. There is no reason why students cannot "recognize the powerful
interactions of form and content" between Isabella Whitney's "To her Inconstant Lover" and
Shakespeare's

Marketing James Patterson Books
Executive Summary:
Over the last decade James Patterson has published an unprecedented number of best–selling books,
cemented a powerful brand image amongst a loyal following, and redefined the process by which
authors create content to meet reader demand. From November 2000 through June 2003, Patterson
had cumulative sales of over six million dollars, trailing only John Grisham during that time frame.
He has generated the majority of his sales through a loyal readership that consistently lines up to
buy his next installment. Keenly aware of this dedicated following, Patterson successfully sought to
augment the proliferation of his titles with co–authors familiar with his brand that could share the
workload, creating a virtual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With an exclusive pre–release to a carefully pre–determined list of customers, Patterson would
instead be proactively creating a buzz, and potentially, a blockbuster.
In terms of channel management, this pre–release should satisfy all members of the channel.
Certainly, the book clubs would embrace the idea of being able to market an exclusive release of a
Patterson novel, and with exclusive rights, should be able to retain club members for longer
commitments. More importantly, this would not have to come at the expense of the retail chains
because club members generally would buy books through the club channel anyways. The retail
stores, instead, could benefit from the buzz created by club members, as non–club members may
now be clamoring to buy the book their friends have already been talking about as soon as it is
released in stores. A true blockbuster would increase the size of the "pie" for all channel members.
Channel (2001): Strategic Resources:

• Brand name: dominant in crime fiction genre
• Many titles: 3 per year vs. 1 for Clancy, Cornwell
• Cliffhanger endings leave Patterson readers eager for next installment
• Marketing Expertise: Patterson former Chairman of J. Walter Thompson

Negatives And Negatives Of Print
The future of print communication lies within the direction of where print media is currently
heading, digital. With that being said, print will never die; there will always be people who want to
physically hold a book, a magazine, or a newspaper. Although it is not presumptuous to assume that
the amount of print will decrease, it will however continue to live for decades to come. Print history
will always have a crucial aspect in the linear advancements of technology. There are many ways to
look at what print is used for in our everyday lives, for one, we read it on a regular basis whether it's
a newspaper, a magazine, a novel, packaging or a map. Everywhere we go print is present, and life
would be unimaginable in the twenty first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The death of print in the newspaper industry is not worldwide, but there has been a rapid shift
towards digital content. This shift is mostly due to the changing consumer behaviour and the widely
available free online content.
Not only have the amount of physical copies of newspapers and magazines decreased, but the
written content has significantly changed too. Walter Benjamin claims that the role of the storyteller
is becoming obsolete, and the stories that are being told are of no relevance to the people of the
twenty first century. With more stories being written both, digitally and professionally, there is less
of a need for people to orally speak about past experiences. Modern story telling is no longer
concerned with the multiple experiences of storytellers, and thus loses the concrete human meaning.
The need for storytelling has decreased due to the amount of facts and information that are readily
available on the Internet. The stories that were once told to pass on knowledge have no relevance,
since more accurately stated facts and information are present in many online sources, which have
been backed with evidence. Thus, making the stories that were told previously not as accurate or
reliable.
Just as mentioned above, it is true that with new technological advances there has been less of a
need for print. It is also true that without print, some of these innovations would not exist today and
it is clear that print is

My First Day Of College
College Freshmen
My first day of college is one of the most important experiences of my life. The semester began on
August 28, 2017. In that morning, I had plenty of time compared to high school. I overslept because
I knew college starts only at 10 a.m. I had an alarm set for 9 a.m. Once I woke, I took a shower and
got ready. HACC is about minimum 8 minutes away from my house. By 9:40 a.m., I was on my way
to the Harrisburg Area Community College. I was full of confidence that I will reach the campus on
time, but the opposite happened. It was my life goal to go to college, however, there came the
complication because I was unaware of the incomprehension and unfamiliarity of being freshmen in
college. As a former new student, I got a little lost before I arrived at my math class. Once I reached
the HACC parking lot, I wasted more than 10 minutes going around the parking lot looking for an
empty spot. While I was driving around, I felt very frustrating. Besides, I was running late to class.
Unfortunately, I did not consider a full parking lot. Suddenly I remembered, when I came to college
orientation I parked my car across a small bridge where a new parking lot was under construction. I
drove there and found out they finished constructing the new parking lot. There were a lot of empty
parking spots. I parked my car and quickly walked toward Whitaker Hall rushing to find my math
class. I had a map of the campus, which listed all names and locations of specific buildings. In

I Choose Maus by Art Spiegleman
I chose Maus by Art Spiegleman. To be honest, I learned about the book from a television show,
Comic Book Men. They were talking about a graphic novel that won the Pulitzer. That peaked my
interest, so I decided to research the topic of the book. When I discovered that it was an
autobiography about a complex relationship between a father and son, I firmly wanted to read it.
The son learning of his father's story of the holocaust was his way of to understand himself and his
heritage and the journey is fascinating. When this assignment for generalist practice two came up, I
jumped at the opportunity.
Maus is a graphic novel. A graphic novel is predominantly told with pictures over words. This novel
in particular relies on a strong and realistic artwork to tell its story along with the imagery of mice.
The novel was released in two parts, the book format is the two parts put together. It is divided into
five chapters, and has 296 pages. The first part was published in 1973 and was completed with the
second portion in 1991 to create the final complete book. This was clearly a labor of love and a
tribute to his father.
There are a multitude of issues in Maus. Loss of loved ones, couple's troubles, competition of dead
loved ones, are just to name a few. This treatment will be focused on repairing the father and son
relationship. Strained since childhood, their relationship has gotten progressively worse since the
death of Art's mother. Art struggles to understand his father on

Working at The Bindery Essay
Working at The Bindery
I have a dream. I have a dream about getting a doctorate degree in music. Well, to get that far, I
know I must get through undergraduate school first, let alone graduate school, and so on. Last year I
realized that I needed a job that paid much more than minimum wage if I was going to afford to go
to college. I then heard about The Bindery from a friend in the same situation as I was. I filled out an
application, went to the orientation a few weeks later, and then discovered that working there would
be no ordinary job. I will now briefly explain how the factory works and then show you the "ropes"

working afternoon shift with me, I can tell you the schedule of work. Monday through Thursday,
work is from 3:30pm–11:30pm, with a 30–minute lunch break at 7:30. Friday is 3:00pm–10:30pm.
Saturday and Sunday (usually optional) is 2:00pm–9:30pm. No lunch break on these days. Every
day, there is a 5–10 minute break every two hours.
Now, I will share the steps to perform the duties of a gatherer in the bindery department. Place your
belongings at the end of the line on which you will be working, and out of people and fork truck
traffic. Grab a bundle of forms from the skid by the string or by the ends, lifting with your legs, and
cautiously throw it up on the pocket. Bundles can weigh from 25 to 50 pounds, depending on the
type of paper being used for the book. Throw as many bundles as it takes to fill the pocket, making
sure that the print on the spine of the paper is lined up correctly. This insures that the page numbers
will go in the correct order. A pocket usually holds about six or seven bundles to make it full. The
number of pages in the book being made determines the number of pockets

Commonplace Book Report
What I have noticed through most of the entries in my commonplace book (especially the two stated
above) is that I mostly write down something when it induces a negative emotion from me–the
quotes that rile me up and make me upset. And usually these are the quotes that remind me of the
hardships faced by women. As a woman, sexism is a prevalent issue in my life, so when I fight
against it, I am fighting for myself. When I came across the first quote, my mind instantaneously
conjured up an image of a mentally exhausted person who was beyond any point of functionality.
Unsurprisingly, the person I visualized was a woman. I've noticed this pattern of associating pain
and struggle with women is a recurring theme in my life (and is also outlined in the second quote). I
know the first quote was used in the context of the gulag and the agony of its prisoners, yet for me,
it can also be applied to women, especially those who are victims of abuse. I find this quote raw and
emotional. It has come to symbolize women when they are completely broken, even if this was not
the context in which it was written. It shows what they can be tuned into. How in certain
circumstances they are forced to act on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It captures why we need feminism. No matter how hard we try, it seems like women will never be
leveled with their male counterparts. Women are always seen as the ones that need protection, the
ones that need the jacket when it's cold. And this frustrates me to no end. I want women to scream
and be taken seriously. I want us to be in a position of power and be terrifying, be something beyond
the limitations of our physical beauty. I wrote down both these quotes because they reminded me of
how the world is more favorable towards men. And to me, these quotes are undeniably connected, if
only by a Gossamer thread, by the theme of women in pain despite their original

Is The Internet Making People Stupid
The style of the Internet definitely has an impact on how we read and think, but Carr did not
mention another contributing factor. It also has to do with the vast amount of information available
on the Internet overwhelming readers. People often do not know where to start when they look up a
certain topic because there is so much information to sift through. If people do not find the
information they are looking for after clicking through one or two links, they often get discouraged
and do not bother to try and dig any deeper for the answer they are looking for. A person trying to do
serious research could go through pages upon pages of information online and still only scratch the
surface of their topic. It is very difficult for a person to create their own ideas and opinions and think
critically when they spend an hour sifting through pages that all say the exact same thing. And while
this problem can also be seen with books, it is a bit easier to sift through books to find information,
you do not have to worry about whether or not the information in the book is valid unlike Internet
sources. Some people do not agree with Carr's view that the Internet is making people stupid, and
instead believe that we have never been smarter. Donald Morrison, a contemporary author and
former editor of TIME Magazine, gives his response to Carr's book The Shallows, "Just as we
survived the advent of the telephone, radio, and television–which experts back then warned would

Reflection About Reading
"You have to read 10 hours this week" said my first grade teacher. In elementary school reading logs
were what all the teachers made us do. Every week I had to read a certain amount of hours. I
however, never read the amount of hours I was supposed too. I would just fill out the log and tell my
mom to sign it. At that time it sounded like a good idea but then came freshman year. Mrs.
Daugherty changed my whole perspective on reading and how important it is to read. In elementary
school reading never came easy too me. My mom would always say "The more you read, the better
you'll be." but I never listened to her. Books were just not interesting to me. We would have book
fairs in our school library and I would always ask my grandma to come and buy me a bunch of
books, but in reality I never even read the books that she bought me. I would wonder around the
library looking for the perfect book then once I thought I found one, I would read one chapter then
be done with it. Most of the time the books would just sit in my room until I got a letter from the
librarian saying that the book was past due. Then when I went to return a book, the librarian would
always ask "How did you like the book?" and I would reply "It was great I really enjoyed it!", even
though I had never even finished the book. In Mrs. Daugherty's freshman college prep English class
reading was what the majority of the class consisted of. We were always reading passages and

Produce a new look for a website.
3.1.2 Formal Report
===================
The problem that was in need of solving was to produce a new look for wow.com to target the 17 to
25 year olds. The look that the company were trying to aim for was young, energetic, dynamic and
flexible.
I firstly set out by comparing some current documents such as flyers, letters and invoices. This
helped me as I could gather the best parts from these documents and use them to give me ideas to
create new ones.
The documents that I selected had to be 3 of a kind that were from three companies with two of a

I also had to produce a job application form which had to be on the website. I looked on the Internet
for examples of application forms and selected the best ones and took ideas from them. Next
document on the agenda was an invoice. I brought in some invoices and used them to compare and
to help me design mine.
I then had to actually make the website for which wow.com would put their new range on. I created
mine by using an online website builder;
I used this as I don't have much knowledge on building websites. This website had to include a
homepage, an order form and a catalogue. I new what kind of look I was aiming for at the start and I
thing I achieved it.
To help improve my website I created a questionnaire to be answered by the first few customers.
This is so I could make improvements to it straight away and also to satisfy other customer's needs.
The questionnaire had two parts to it, the questions and answers section which was design so that I
could get exactly what I wanted and secondly the tick box section which provided me with what
generally what they thought of the website. I then produced the results and incorporated the
improvements into the final design.
Overall I think what I have produced has been exactly what the company has been looking for and I
feel that they will be happy with what I have given them. All of the stationary is stylish and modern;

Evaluating Kamil's Instructional Level And Needs
The examiner conducted several assessments in order to determine Kamil's instructional level and
needs in the area of decoding, attitude about reading as well as his ability to comprehend and retell a
text. The information derived from the series of assessments has helped plan for meaningful
instruction, which in the opinion of examiner will meet Kamil's instructional needs and support the
increase of motivation towards reading. Below are the recommendations for each area of the
instructional need.
Attitude about Reading The Motivation to Read Profile survey reveals that Kamil feels good as a
reader and he has a positive attitude towards reading. He also seems to read books which he chooses
by himself and which are mostly comic books. Therefore, it is important to improve Kamil's
motivation and engagement in choosing various genres of literature in order to expose him to the
complex nature of English language. One way to increase Kamil's desire to reach for a wide variety
of books is implementing activity titled Three–piece Kits (Edmunds & Bauserman, 2006). The
teacher creates a three–piece kit containing three different types and/or genres of books in a bag.
The kit should contain a narrative text, a poem and an expository book on a topic Kamil finds
interesting. For example, Kamil's teacher can collect an autobiography/narrative book titled
Knucklehead, a collection of war poems and an informational book about World War I/II. Kamil

The Importance Of Censorship In Libraries
Censorship is a huge thing within today's society, Censorship in libraries is when a school board, a
parent, or just anyone challenges a book that is explicit with sexual language, homosexuality, and or
religion. The meaning of censorship is to ban a book, it's not necessarily up to the library, but more
so to the community and the school board. Anyone can challenge a book to be censored, even if it's
not explicit, if you personally take offense to a book you can challenge it to be a censored or banned
book, but with that you have to have a valid reason on why you want it banned or censored. There
are thousands of books that are considered to be explicit and are banned out of libraries in some
schools even if they aren't that bad of books, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Including Ten Sleep, Wyoming. On the other hand there's a lot of schools who have just this specific
book banned or censored because it is sexually explicit, homosexuality explicit, and religiously
explicit.
For my second reasoning, books can be challenged, censored, or banned in libraries if the parents,
staff, or school board if they do not necessarily agree with their children to read books that are
censored in libraries because they could be religious and it could be going against their beliefs and
that would affect and cause a lot of chaos for the school district or public library; my prospective
and voice on this is that there should be books banned, censored, or challenge because theirs always
going to be someone who will take offense to something, wither it is a book, a movie, a magazine,
or even a song. Mark Twain a famous poet once quoted, "The man who does not read has no
advantage over the man who cannot read" and I personally think this is important because I believe
that the more experience that you may have in reading or just anything else, the more experience
you will have means the more knowledge you have, this is significant because if you can read or
hear and you choose not to listen to music or read, you are only hurting yourself because you will
have no advantages over anyone. . If you are

Abuse And Assault As A Young Boy: A Short Story
I fell in love with books at an early age and like many young loves, one left a mark on me that I'll
never forget. I remember the fall day that this one special book came into my life. I was sitting in
my high school English class when my teacher wheeled a library cart full of books into class. The
usual groans of disapproval erupted from the teenagers filling the room but unlike the rest of my
classmates, my heart skipped a beat in anticipation. Where others saw an unwanted task, I saw a
potential new world to fall in love with. We were told to each choose one book at random and then
to write a book report on what we liked and disliked about it. Additionally, we would be reading our
reports aloud in front of the class. This seemingly mundane task ... Show more content on

Discussing abuse and assault as a teenage boy is a difficult and terrifying experience. I was never
much of an outspoken person and typically avoided uncomfortable conversations as a matter of
principle. Growing up in a household where it was better to be unseen and unheard did not
encourage open discussion of sensitive topics. My usual book reports were filled with emotional
detachment if the story was one that I did not particularly enjoy. The scenes and topics in this book
became intertwined with my own memories and as I put the words on paper it became a quasi–self–
narrative of my own life. As I wrote, it became more difficult to separate the fact from the fiction.
When it became time to read this report in front of my classmates, the typical nervousness of public
speaking was amplified to a level I had never experienced before. It was this day that I learned the
cathartic power in speaking of those experiences out loud. Under the guise of describing the horrors,
the character in this book faced, I was able to speak for the first time on the pain and suffering that
my family experienced at home daily. That day

The Case Study of "Bookoff, Amazon Japan, and the Japanese Retail Bookselling Industry"
Una Hu
1 Why is the profitability of large Japanese retail booksellers relatively poor and their scale
relatively small?
According to the case, 'stagnation in sales along with the steady increase of costs over time has
reduced the profitability of both large chains and small stores' (Peng 2009, p. 391). There are several
reasons that results in the relatively poor profitability of large Japanese retail booksellers and their
small scale.
Firstly, the Saihan system, i.e. Resale Price Maintenance, is the most important factor. The system's
price–fixing policy rules out the price competition (Peng 2009, p. 390), which would be a normal

387–395). The large number of bookstores is competing with each other for similar products with
similar price. In addition, the Japanese retail bookselling industry has already become an
oversaturated market nowadays (Peng 2009, p. 391). Therefore, the rivalry among retail bookstores
becomes fairly intense under this circumstance.
Also, it is almost certain that potential new entrants can be threatening, owing to the weak
competitive power of existing bookstores, to be more specific, their small scale (Peng 2009, pp.
387), i.e. little economies of scale (Peng 2009, p. 37), the lack of uniqueness in their products with
similar price (Peng 2009, pp. 390), i.e. shortage of non–scale–based advantages (Peng 2009, p. 37).
In addition, the scarcity of entry barriers set by the Japanese government is another factor (Higuchi
2007). 'Entry barriers are advantages that incumbents have relative to new entrants.' (Porter 2008)
Additionally, the number of publishers and wholesalers is relatively small compared with the
bookstores. Therefore, these distributors have high bargaining power, i.e. they have the choice to
favor larger book retailers over small ones because of the Consignment Sale System, i.e. they can
obtain higher profit due to larger retailer's lower return rate (Peng 2009, pp. 388–389).

Themes Of The Book ' Echo, Great Ambition '
All books have themes that teach the reader a lesson. The theme of the book Echo is great ambition.
Another book that has a great theme is Tuck Everlasting which has the theme of hope. I have read so
many books with many great themes. But one book that I read in my summer reading assignment is
Red Queen. This book's theme was so intriguing. Usually, books have themes like friendship, love,
and kindness. But the Red Queen had a very interesting theme. The theme of this book was trust and
betrayal.
Now before I launch into a wide–ranged explanation of why it has a theme of trust and betrayal let
me explain the summary of the book to you. Now in this book Mare Barrow's world is divided by
blood. Those with red blood and those with silver ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To be more specific I will quote a passage from the book Red Queen. "What is it? Who else joined
up?" They don't answer me, exchanging glances instead. A few names run through my head,
servants and kitchen boys who would support the cause. But the person who joins us is no servant.
He's not even Red. "Maven."
I don't know whether to scream or run when I see my betrothed appear from the shadows. He's a
prince, he's Silver, he's the enemy, and yet, here he is, standing with one of the leaders of the Scarlet
Guard. His companion Holland, an aging Red servant with years of service behind him, seems to
swell with pride. She steps toward us, gun in hand, but she's just as nervous as he is. Still, her voice
does not shake. "I want to hear it from your lips, little prince. Tell me what you told him," she says
tipping her head toward Holland. Maven sneers at "little prince," his lips curving in distaste, but he
doesn 't snap at her. "I want to join the Guard," he says, his voice full of conviction. She moves
quickly, cocking the pistol and taking aim in the same motion. My heart seems to stop when she
presses the barrel to his forehead, but Maven doesn't flinch. "Why?" she hisses.
"Because the world is wrong. What my father has done, what my brother will do, is wrong." He is a
prince and, worst of all, the queen's son. I didn't want to trust him for this very reason, for the secrets
he kept hidden. Or maybe this is what he

To Use, or Not to Use E-books. That Is the Question.
Thanks to new technology that is being invented every day, life has become increasingly simple and
concise. There are gadgets that introduced almost daily which are meant to replace "outdated" and
"old" ways of living. The invention of e–books was one such creation that was made to make the
lives of readers easier and simpler. However, are traditional paper books truly better than e–books?
If so, or if not, why? It is time to settle the score. E–books hit the shelves and were (and still are)
huge. Visiting a bookstore or waiting for a book to arrive at the house, for many people, takes much
too long. Life, today, is all about doing precise work in a short amount of time, and e–books are a
way to help consumers do just that. As commented on by Mohsin Hamid of the New York Times,
"The advantages of e–books are clear ... I can read an intriguing review of a book...and with the
click of a button be reading that book in an instant" (Hamid). Hamid also later commented on the
convenience of many features that e–books possess, "it is possible to vary the size of the font...e–
books can be read in the dark, self–illuminated" (Hamid). An e–reader can also hold at least a
thousand or more books without any extra weight, making e–readers very useful for traveling. They
are light, do not take up to much space, and you can hold a wide variety of books on your person at
any given time. These features, which paper books do not possess, are enticing features which
appeal to a wide spectrum of

Saul Bellow Response essay
In Saul Bellow's essay, Hidden Within Technology's Kingdom, a Republic of Letters, he reveals to
us that by the 1930's the media was beginning to make the written word obsolete.
Most of Americans are losing their since of literature. Bellow tells us of how Oswald Spengler, one
of the most widely read authors of the early '30s, taught that our tired old civilization was very
nearly finished. His advice to the young was to avoid literature and the arts and to embrace
mechanization and become engineers. Shocked by Oswald Spengler conclusion Bellow refused to
me obsolete. He had faced the challenge and defied the evolutionist historians. A few years later, in
an issue of The Wall Street Journal, Bellow came upon an old ... Show more content on

In 2002, only 52 percent of Americans ages 18 to 24, the college years, read a book voluntarily,
down from 59 percent in 1992. Money spent on books dropped 14 percent from 1985 to 2005 and
has fallen dramatically since the mid–1990s. The number of adults with bachelor's degrees and
"proficient
in reading prose" dropped from 40 percent in 1992 to 31 percent in 2003.
I believe that print media will soon become obsolete if it is not already obsolete. There are billions
of cell phone users worldwide. It is much easier for them to get the bulk of their news and
information online. Why would they go to a store to buy a newspaper or magazine, when all they
have to do is turn on a cell phone? I believe with the advent of tablets and e– readers, there will be a
time that print media is obsolete. I already find that anytime I am required to print something, I am
shocked that in 2013 we can't have an e–solution. With newspapers dying by the day, I think that e–
media will be the thing left standing. What motivates us to read? Interest, engagement in the topic,
desire to understand, having the choice and recommendation of those we trust leads us to a book.
How often do we take the path less traveled instead of turning on a computer or the television?
What might our society lose if people read fewer books? We may be slowly evolving to be less

The Pros And Cons Of Modern Censorship
Duy Nguyen

Prof. Ferrier Watson
ENGL 1302
Modern Censorship What is censorship? Censorship means the process to examine a work, a piece
of art, etc... in order to suppress or delete any object in it that may seem objectionable or harmful.
But why is there censorship? Writing has always been a risky venture, fraught with ethical, political
and financial pitfalls. If we look at the history of the world writing, we can see that it is filled with
examples of censorship in many aspects ( political, social, personal ) and the authors of those
writing have often risked much for the sake of their written words and for the sake of their readers.
So is censorship right or wrong? To me, however, I think that there is no clear answer to that
question, for censorship has its fair balance of advantages and disadvantages to its certain limit. A
lot of people said censorship is right, cause it keeps the young generation safe from the "words" that
might ruin their mind, but some said censorship is unnecessary because of it just words and sooner
or later all kids will hear and know what those words mean. In my opinion, some part of censorship
is good but it depends on the limit that is taken and how extreme censorship goes. I do agree with
one advantage that most people also agree about is that censorship helps protects the young, the
innocent and the vulnerable. It is built on the premise that we don't always know what is good for
us, we

My Reflection On My Parents Instilled
My parents instilled in me the importance of reading since a very early age. We formed a nightly
routine of reading every night before bed as soon as I started learning the basics of reading. I
enjoyed every moment of this; it was my favorite part of the day. The first book I was able to read
on my own was "One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish" by Dr. Seuss. The feeling of success I had
after this accomplishment is as clear as day and I can still see myself as a five–year–old beaming
with joy when I could finally read a book without assistance. In grade school, I was never the one
who was passionate about reading. However, when it came time to write a story, I was excited and
even wrote stories on my own. In third grade, my friends and I would write fictional stories during
lunchtime and present them to our teacher after recess. I can still remember the sense of pride we
felt when we saw the surprised and proud looks on our teacher's face. It made us want to write more
and more. But years went on, and I still never formed a fondness for recreational reading. I've been
assigned more than five books a year in the past; some would catch my interest, but never enough to
pull me in as much as to read in my spare time. There were rare occasions when I was really pulled
into a book that was assigned to me. To this day I do not know if that was because of the mere
thought that I was not willingly reading the book, or just that I did not have the patience for it. All

Article Analysis : Harper Lee 's ' Kill A Mockingbird '
A lot of books that get banned are due to having real world events, and certain words that are
censoring students from history, and reality. "Harper Lee's book has been challenged by black
parents who object to the use of the word "nigger"." (Rohrer). Although the word is disrespectful to
use, it's a part of history that can't be erased. "To Kill a Mockingbird" uses the word 58 times in the
book, but without it, the book wouldn't have an accurate representation of that time era. The fact that
some religions, origins, and ethnicities get offended by this is understandable, but by trying to ban
the books from schools it is restricting information from the whole student body not only their child.
The history that is being shown by the use of "nigger" only teaches the time era we have lived and
points out how far we have come from. History is what has happened in the past, and what has
shaped us today. The past defines us and is a reminder of where we came from, but also shows us
what we learned from our mistakes. It initially builds our moral values and is memories of time eras
and accomplishments. Parents can't just erase the events that they don't like, otherwise, they aren't
allowing their children to know the truth of what has happened in our past. This takes away
knowledge from students and ultimately makes them naive. Covering the issues of this world with

Essay On Strengths And Weaknesses
Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses in an area, but our weaknesses can improve and be
turned into another strength. One of my main weaknesses was reading and comprehension skills;
whether it being a book, article, or even notes. It's something I have always struggled with, but
every weakness can improve into a strength depending on how badly you're willing to work for it.
Comprehension while I read was my largest issue, and it would be so awful to where I would read a
whole story and still question what the plot was about. I would need all the help I could find for
English classes throughout school because my grade would always slip when there was a reading

It was my senior year of high school and English 4 CP was the one class that made me anxious
because I had no hope in doing well, considering that I struggled deeply with English 1 CP. Many
thoughts ran through my head, which only made me more nervous for this class. My plan was to just
use Google to help me find the easy short written plot to any book we would read for class. The
teacher ended up making us read a book of our choice every Thursday during the entire class period.
I would grab a book and pretend to read it, just by staring at the pages and pretending to flip to the
next because I thought there was no use since I wouldn't understand it anyway.
During the school year, I built a relationship with my teacher and I talked to her about many aspects.
One day I was telling her how much I loved math because it was like a simple puzzle and the pieces
easily fit into the problems. She told me that English was a puzzle as well and that's why it's her
favorite subject. She further explained that a book is a puzzle because it obtains a series of events
that you must piece together. I told her that for me, reading was like having too many difficult little
pieces and I couldn't find the right fit. She began to open my eyes by discussing that a challenging
puzzle is the best kind because it allows your mind to think more and explore. My teacher gave me

Industry Description Of The Retailing Industry
Industry Description
Book retailing is an industry where companies sell books and other reading media, including, audio
books, e–books and e–readers. Some bookstores sell other products including DVDs, stationery and
gifts. Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWCS) world network reports sales of sixty billion globally,
including e–books (Hoovers Inc, 2016). Most Book retailers operate from storefronts, although
some bookstores also operate online. Barnes & Noble US, Fnac France, Page One China, Thalia
Germany, and WH Smith UK are prominent companies in this industry. (Hoovers Inc, 2016).
According to Yee, (n.d.). Dymocks is the largest bookstore chain in Australia; others include Collins

Over the five year period until 2015–6, there was an annual decline in revenue of 10.6% (ibisworld,
2016). Numerous challenges have beset the industry, such as, lower book prices, strong competition
from online retailers and a change in popularity from printed books to e–books (ibisworld, 2016).
Other issues that have a significant effect on bookstores are parallel import restrictions (IBISWorld,
2016), and online retailers being advantaged by low freight charges and often no requirement to pay
(GST) Goods and Services Tax (ABC, 2016).
Encouraging Signs
However, there are encouraging signs according to Williams, (2015) who points to the icon of
bookstores Dymocks, which claims to have had its best ever sales year. Sydney book retailer Jon
Page noted an upward surge in sales in the final quarter leading up to Christmas, a period that
accounts for around 70% of annual sales (Han, 2015). According to the Nielsen book scan data,
there were 55.4 million in sales of printed books in Australia last year, a 2.2% increase over the
previous year, the first sales increase since 2009. (Han, 2015).
Some of the downturns in printed book sales may be as a result of economic conditions which have
affected all retailers. According to Page, (n.d.) the global financial crisis has dramatically changed
retailing regardless of your product (Han, 2015).The chief executive of the Australian Booksellers
Association, Joel Becker commented, the

In this part we should start by briefly introducing the two cybermediaries and then outline what is
similar and different between them.
Bookfinder4u
Bookfinder4u provides services and does not make sales directly. It searches various bookstores and
booksellers all around the world within seconds. There are two types of services that bookfinder4u
avails: in–print book search system and out–print book search system. Bookfinder4u searches
around 100 book stores and 60000 booksellers all over the world. It helps in price comparison and
shows results for the lowest price range. The company stands independently, is not associated with
any bookstore or seller and the results that are shown are impartial. The results of the prices that are
shown on the site are accurate and real. The results that are shown are updated every 30 minutes and
if so don't happen then there can be varied reasons behind the same such as the user is using a slow
network facility, the bookstore hasn't been available or their backup is down, etc. The services
provided by Bookfinder4u are completely and absolutely free of any charge.

Case Study : Mr. Linden 's Book Shop
Mr. Linden's Book Shop
He had warned her about the book. Now it's too late.....
There was a girl. She lay in the bed sound asleep, in her cold, dark room. Beside her, was a book.
The book had long vines that have grown out of it. The vines grew longer, and longer, and longer,
until they reached to the end of her bed, then to the floor, and then to her door. A few months earlier,
there was a man named Mark Linden. He wanted to own a book store. When he thought about
buying a store. He searched the streets for stores or shops that have been closed down and weren't in
use. It took him a long time to find the right one that made him feel at home. He found a medium
sized shop after looking for a few days. It looked as if it hadn't been in use for at least 10 years.
Inside of it was a cold, dark room filled with spider webs. The smell was very foul like a rats nest.
There was no light in the room. He was mad that there was no light and that he would have to go get
light bulbs and lamps. When he got the light bulbs, he replaced them and then worked on cleaning
up. He dusted the bookshelves, swept the floor, and cleaned the computers.
After a month or so, he started to get a lot of people to come to his shop to buy books, because no
one else in the town worked at or owned a place where you could get books at the time. The
business started to get better and better, then the girl came to borrow a book. Her name was Lucy,

During this Report we will be looking at the different types of resources available for new learners
in Health and social care. I will be reviewing four different types of resources I have researched. I
will also explain why they are presented differently from one another and the different types of ways
these resources can be presented by the media.
Internet – The internet is easily accessible and used worldwide. It is a global network and you can
find a wide range of information on any topic via the internet. You can gain access on to the internet

The book I used as a resource (Understanding Health and Social Care, Second edition, Julia
Johnson, Sage publications, 2010) contained references, so that I knew where the piece of
information was coming from and that it was from a reliable source. It had a contents page, with the
chapter and page number, making it easier for myself to find a particular subject. There was also an
index pages, which helped me to locate useful information. There was a lot of technical words and
some jargon in this book and I did have to make a note of the words I didn't fully understand in
order to go back and look them up to fully understand. Books can be presented by the media through
the radio, billboards, television, social media sites and the internet. Understanding Health and social
care is targeted at students and people working within the Health and social care sector. It is
presented differently because it has lots of references and is updated when new information comes
out or when what was previously written in the book has now become outdated.
Journals – A journal is subject based and is written by experts and professionals. A journal is usually
researched based and will be based upon facts with references/ evidence to support the writer's
findings. Journals are known as periodical as they are published at regular intervals which could also
make them a better resource than a book. The resource (Psychology review, volume 20, April 2015)

Looking For Books For Business Classes
I went to the school store to buy books and I approached one of the student sellers and asked for
help. She first asked me how she could help me. I then told her I was looking for books for business
classes, so she directed me to the business section of the store. She then asked me what the CRN
was. I told her the CRN and she found the book. She then asked if I was buying the book today, but
I could not buy the book because it was more expensive than I thought. I told her not today because
of that reason. She then gave me the alternate option, which was to buy the book online for a
cheaper price. So I listened to her advice and brought the book online. This to me was a great
interaction because she didn't let me leave without knowing all my options, she answer all of my
questions, and helped me right away when I approached her. She used most of the selling sequence.
Today I went to Walmart to buy a laptop fan because I notice my laptop overheated a lot. I went to
the electronic section and I was approached by a man and his name tag said Larry. He first asked
"how can I help you today?" He was very friendly and knowledgeable about the product I was
asking for. He asked me the price range I was looking to buy in, and the size and brand of my

The Benefits Of Mandated Reading In High School
Reading has not really been one of my strong points. I remember my mom reading to me at a very
young age, but that was listening not reading. So, one could say, listening was a big part of my life,
but reading was not. Reading is not something I do for pleasure. I see reading as something I am
taxed with, something I must do. I am repeatedly punished with required summer reading and
textbook reading. There is no joy or pleasure trying to read chapter after chapter, only because you
HAVE TO. The fun in reading, especially in high school, has been killed by education and turned
into the chore worse than any other. The days of blissfully listening to a book have long past.
Mandated reading in high school invariably means a look at the past and being educated by the
"classics". The meanings of books are shouted at students. These book have been read countless
times by an innumerable people and high school students are expected to regurgitate exactly what
these outdated "classics" are all about. Students are expected to figure out these "classics" and are
brainwashed to find the importance of select literary terms like tone, mood, and purpose. I find it
ironic that as a high school student, I am expected to relate to a middle–aged author from 100 years
ago. I am personally sick of being shouted at. I miss simpler times when I could really understand
the meaning of a book, it whispered softly at me and did not yell at me and cause me to cringe. But I
am not here to tell people what I think about reading, I am here to talk about how it has shaped me.
So, buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy ride.
Rewind to childhood. I was read the commonplace child's books and I can vividly remember each
and every one of the Dr. Seuss books. In addition, my mom continued to bribe me to "read" by
reading just about anything relating to Thomas the Tank Engine. Again, I was not really reading, but
I was listening. I became a very good listener. My childhood "reading" continued until my younger
brother learned how to read at which point my mom no longer read out loud to us, but rather I was
expected to read independently. I resisted change, as most people do, and chose to read only books
with pictures. My choice

Connecting this to the title of chapter two, "Learning to See"
when reading requires looking closely at the small details and soaking it in, in a way that one can
look back upon it later. Once one starts to carefully listen and look at the fluidity and rich
ingredients a book has, he/she can find their own voice, which leads into the next chapter. Reading
spurs imagination which then allows one to explore their own inner being. Welty best describes her
encounter of this by explaining "my imagination takes its strength and guides its direction from what

The Inconvenience Of Hastings Entertainment
Mark Doerr
English 101

The Inconvenience of Hastings Entertainment Throughout our entire lives we are taught structure.
Structure that repeats itself. Each night we set our alarms to the same time previous. We awake
robotically, work, interact with the same faces, and then return to our homes to trace the process. So
where do we rely on our imagination to come from? The vast majority of us cut it out of our cycle
and replace it with a television. Some of us, however, still pick up a book. To fantasize about things
that don't actually exist, to escape from reality for just a speck of time. I am of few in this internet–
driven society that still read. Which for me involves going to a bookstore to look for a good book.
Nowadays there are few bookstore opportunities. Due to Amazon and Kindle making it easier to
press a few buttons than to drive somewhere to find it. The only two bookstore chains I know of in
the Spokane area are Barns & Noble and Hastings Entertainment. I usually go to Hastings on 29th
street, because it's only about ten blocks from my house. However I have begun to realize that
Hastings Entertainment is an inconvenient bookstore for its customers because there is an unreliable
computer system, not enough employees to help assist a customer and the store is always re–
arranged. There is an outdated computer system for books to be located throughout the store. The
computer system Hastings has makes it very difficult to search for a book, and

Inventory management has two sections: stock picking / inventory replacement and shipping /
receiving. Both will require inventory software as well as a tie–in to the customer database.
Hardware requirements are: Bar code scanners, permanently mounted for the shipping and receiving

shipping/receiving hardware includes standard PC I/O terminals, and printers for shipping labels.
Accounting
The accounting software is the center of the business. It will require standard accounting software,

Difference Between Digital Reading And Digital Reading
Digital Reading vs. Printed Reading
For a person who loves to read, I could never imagine myself reading on a screen when it comes to
the choice of print or digital reading. Whether it is for research, schoolwork, or just for fun, the
articles I find online only encourages me to print them so that I could have a physical copy in my
hands. That's when the inseparable feeling occurs to me: I feel more of an attachment between the
physical copy of the text and myself. I become so indulged in the text that my surroundings
disappear. I can ultimately understand what I'm reading and grasp all the book's pearls. Many people
who enjoy reading can reminisce with the same feelings that I have experienced. Even many of
those who read for the sake of completing a task can admit that there's not much of a strain when
comparing print to digital reading. This is why reading from a book is still a necessity in our daily
lives: it allows for a better grasp of information, greater memory production, and an enjoyable
experience that the reader can always appreciate.
When we read from books, our brains can attain more information at a more accurate and faster rate,
resulting in greater scores when displaying comprehension skills in the long run. Lauren Singer and
Patricia Alexander, scholars of University of Maryland, proves this instance in their experiment,
Reading Across Mediums: Effects of Reading Digital and Print Texts on Comprehension and
Calibration (2016). The study consisted of

Your Writing Style Essay
Your Writing Style
How can one person know what good style is when writing a paper? Where is it written that we as
students should have to follow specific guidelines while writing? Anyone wanting to make their
writing clear, precise, and simply correct will usually try following some type of guideline, or book
in order to perfect their own writing style. After reading both The Elements of Style by Strunk and
White, and also Williams's Style toward Clarity and Grace I can see why teachers discuss these
books as tools for correcting and perfecting their students writing, and style. While at the same time
understand someone out of the classroom setting, brushes up on their skills in writing with these
books before they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead of calling these books rule books they should be called suggestive writing tip books.
Whereas, before someone thought if they did not follow the rule they were breaking it, now they can
feel they are simply choosing to ignore some advice that may or may not have been helpful to them.
This helps them to understand that not every time they "break" a rule is wrong, sometimes choosing
to ignore the advice can have positive effects on their writing. Strunk and White, and Williams use
very different approaches when addressing the issue of style.
Strunk and White, apply more of a straight forward approach strictly telling the reader to follow
their rules word for word. Although, many students and teachers believe it is a mystery why they
choose the rules in style that they put into their book. Are these places where students have the most
trouble with their style, and diction? If not, then are they the pet peeves of an overtly critical no–
nonsense teacher? It was my understanding that overall the students should not question the advice
being given them; they should simply follow the rules with no questions asked. After going through
the blogs I came across Paula Newsom's, she felt the same way I did about Strunk and White's
method for addressing style in their book. According to Paula's blog "any style book that makes a
reader presume that its rules are engraved in stone suggests that there is only one

Commonplace Book Analysis
A little over three months ago, I, along with thousands of other freshmen, embarked on a scary, yet
exciting new chapter in our lives. Most of us, myself included, thought that we were well prepared
for our first classes as college students. If I were asked what I had learned during college, I would
have a hard time stating anything other than useless facts related to my classes. My commonplace
book includes posts from throughout the semester that express my progression as both a student and
a person.
While I was rereading entries from my commonplace book, I was reminded of the dejected feeling
that I had at the beginning of each unit. It was almost amusing to me to see how fearful I was of
each project and then see how I gradually progressed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first tag is "learning". It may seem obvious but I learned so much about not the only the writing
process, but in my self too. Nearly all of my entries in the commonplace book discuss some lesson
that I learned from the time when I figured out MLA format to when I finally realized how to revise
the style of my papers. The second tag is "Fear of Failure". One of my favorite quotes is from Gena
Showalter that says "Giving up is the only sure way to fail". One of my biggest problems throughout
the semester was being discouraged right from the beginning, which I talked about in each unit
reflection. Once I overcame the fear of screwing up the project, I was finally able to get to work and
spit out some pretty good material. My third tag is "Resiliency". I thought about combining
resiliency and fear of failure but the more that I thought about it, I realized that they were
completely different. Resiliency deals with the extreme amount of effort that I put into each any ever
piece that I brought to class even though I would rather be doing literally anything else. It also
covers all of the times when I had no clue what I was doing and had to start over from scratch, even
though I could have easily turned in a piece that would have received an okay grade. "Differences"
is my fourth tag. The idea of differences first came to me when we were working on the Op–Doc
analysis and each had videos that were all polar opposites of each other. Not only were the styles of
our Op–Docs different, but so were the styles in which we wrote our analyses. In high school we
learn how to do everything just like one another, but in college we finally open our eyes and see that
being different is what makes us who we are. My final tag is "Creative Edge". It took me to the late
half of the semester to finally find my creative edge. Because it took me so long to find it, I had
started to think that

  • 1. Workplace Book What is a commonplace book? My understanding of a commonplace book is less about the book aspect and more of a method to compile knowledge, and ideas from quotes in order to reflect and gain a greater understanding through self reflection. In a sense it is like a mental scrapbook. A place to store ideas and work through them in order to gain a better understanding of the work as a whole. So what made it into my scrapbook and why. Looking over the past 5 weeks of commonplace entries and the 20 quotes that I have accumulated a few patterns seemed to develop. The first pattern that I discovered upon reflection is when a quote has intense or impactful imagery. This pattern doesn't surprise me. Why write anything if you're not interested in ... • 3. How Did Johannes Gutenberg Impact The Printing Press In 1454, Johannes Gutenberg crafted numerous volumes of the Catholic Bible with his printing press. These Latin Bibles sold at prices affordable to the middle class, when previously only the wealthiest churches could afford them. Although it was not the first printing press, Gutenberg's printing press positively impacted Western Civilization for centuries, because it spread literacy and Christianity, and allowed books to become commonplace and affordable. Gutenberg built upon the success of others. China and Japan printed with engraved wooden blocks as early as the eighth and ninth centuries, with movable type invented in the eleventh century. By the fourteenth century, Europe used the same techniques. The Encyclopedia Britannica explains his merging of ideas: "Johannes Gutenberg is generally credited with... the invention of modern printing: the use of dies to make individual pieces of type that could be assembled as required and then reused, and the use of a press by which sharp impressions could be made many times over, on both sides of a sheet of paper ... • 5. The National Automotive Museum Preserves And Maintains... Founded in 1989, the National Automotive Museum preserves and maintains more than two– hundred cars for the public to admire. Projects that go into working with the museum include archiving both old and new knowledge of cars, filing research away on cars sold after Harrah's death for new owners, digitizing new information using the computer system called PastPerfect, and transcribing the journal of a man to the computer for record keeping. All of these tasks meant learning new skills in maintaining a museum's behind the scene collection as well as researching the collection's history. These projects help the museum function as well as provide a source of income so that the museum can stay open. The first project was archiving in the museum library to learn organizational skills. The automotive museum stores journals, magazines, books, and media such as film all in a library in the back of the museum. The articles and journals within this library date back to the early car magazines in the early twentieth century when the car was a novel machine, and goes all the way up to the most recent editions that feature electric cars from Tesla. The project was to make sure everything went back where it belonged in the system. Proper storage of the books ensures that the library stays organized for research on the cars. Another aspect of that project is to add new works to the library. As previously stated, the library is in possession of magazines and books from contemporary times ... Analysis Of ' Fog Falling On Cedars ' Taking Flight I sit in this AP Language and Composition class trying to decipher the essence of the unending annotations and floods of random texts for the past quarter. Little did I know that I would be taking flight and soaring through the smallest details and threads of literary devices and techniques of analyzing language. Before this class, I looked at a book, aware that it was filled with potential symbolism and crucial themes that were definitely worth considering. Yet, I often paid far less attention to the way words are crafted in efforts to create a beautiful masterpiece. Who knew that the jargon used in Snow Falling on Cedars could significantly shape the overall tone of the book? From the years leading up to this class, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Welty describes the first steps of reading as "human, but inward...It is to me the voice of the story or poem itself" (Welty 11). Picking up from my knowledge of personification, I gained a new perspective on how books play an impact on how one thinks when reading a piece, as it describes the voice of the book as a human. Having said, this gave me the idea that books establish a personal connection between itself and the reader. Following through with the next chapter, Welty recognizes the value of the summer trips she experienced with her family. She makes an interesting analogy between her trips and reading by calling them "stories. Not only in form, but in their taking on direction, movement, development, change...each trip made its particular revelation, though I could not have found words for it" (68). Connecting this to the title of chapter two, "learning to see" when reading requires looking closely at the small details and soaking it in, in a way that one can look back upon it later. Once one starts to carefully listen and look at the fluidity and rich ingredients a book has, he/she can find their own voice, which leads into the next chapter. Reading spurs imagination which then allows one to explore their own inner being. Welty best describes her encounter of this by explaining "my imagination takes its strength and guides its direction from what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. English 125 Syllabus The concept of requirements for the English major at Yale University is based upon a desire to inform, and, as explained by the description of English 125 and 126 on the department website, are meant to provide: "generous introduction to the abiding formal and thematic concerns of the English literary tradition." A resounding emphasis is put on the benefit the student will receive from the skills that the classes require. However, students would be able to "come away with a sharpened awareness of what it means to read with the attentiveness that great literature demands" regardless of the content of the syllabus, as long as there was a focus on close reading and form that was adhered to by the professor. The question that remains is: what is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With a syllabus centered around woman poets, students would be exposed to more socioeconomically diverse group of poets. While the 'major' poets of the English 125 syllabus were all born into some degree of wealth, the women who acted as supplementary readings for the course were of more varied backgrounds. Isabella Whitney, for example, was born to a lower class English family. Her experiences in life are reflected in her poetry, and starkly contrast the poetry of the 'major' men. While the traditional male poets may not have had the same views, they were privy to a lot of similar experiences due to their class standing, and therefore tackled some of the same issues. To have a different viewpoint and style of writing in terms of not only gender, but of class, is crucial in the development of an English major. The current syllabus requires students to be complacent with the multitude under–developed female characters that are created through the eyes of men, and satisfied with the few women who are given deeper personalities, like the Wife of Bath in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Such confining works lead to conversation that automatically focuses on the negative when it comes to gender–that women are disregarded and often powerless when depicted from the male point of view, unless they are overtly sexualized. From a modern stance, this is seen as a sexist and unfair representation, but based on the current material offered in English 125, it seems as though it is an injustice that must be dealt with to understand the nuances of pivotal English poetry. However, a deeper focus on women poets would eliminate, or at least add dimension to, this type of conversation. There is no reason why students cannot "recognize the powerful interactions of form and content" between Isabella Whitney's "To her Inconstant Lover" and Shakespeare's ... Marketing James Patterson Books Executive Summary: Over the last decade James Patterson has published an unprecedented number of best–selling books, cemented a powerful brand image amongst a loyal following, and redefined the process by which authors create content to meet reader demand. From November 2000 through June 2003, Patterson had cumulative sales of over six million dollars, trailing only John Grisham during that time frame. He has generated the majority of his sales through a loyal readership that consistently lines up to buy his next installment. With an exclusive pre–release to a carefully pre–determined list of customers, Patterson would instead be proactively creating a buzz, and potentially, a blockbuster. In terms of channel management, this pre–release should satisfy all members of the channel. Certainly, the book clubs would embrace the idea of being able to market an exclusive release of a Patterson novel, and with exclusive rights, should be able to retain club members for longer commitments. More importantly, this would not have to come at the expense of the retail chains because club members generally would buy books through the club channel anyways. The retail stores, instead, could benefit from the buzz created by club members, as non–club members may now be clamoring to buy the book their friends have already been talking about as soon as it is released in stores. • 15. Negatives And Negatives Of Print The future of print communication lies within the direction of where print media is currently heading, digital. With that being said, print will never die; there will always be people who want to physically hold a book, a magazine, or a newspaper. Although it is not presumptuous to assume that the amount of print will decrease, it will however continue to live for decades to come. Print history will always have a crucial aspect in the linear advancements of technology. There are many ways to look at what print is used for in our everyday lives, for one, we read it on a regular basis whether it's a newspaper, a magazine, a novel, packaging or a map. Everywhere we go print is present, and life would be unimaginable in the twenty first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The death of print in the newspaper industry is not worldwide, but there has been a rapid shift towards digital content. This shift is mostly due to the changing consumer behaviour and the widely available free online content. Not only have the amount of physical copies of newspapers and magazines decreased, but the written content has significantly changed too. Walter Benjamin claims that the role of the storyteller is becoming obsolete, and the stories that are being told are of no relevance to the people of the twenty first century. With more stories being written both, digitally and professionally, there is less of a need for people to orally speak about past experiences. Modern story telling is no longer concerned with the multiple experiences of storytellers, and thus loses the concrete human meaning. The need for storytelling has decreased due to the amount of facts and information that are readily available on the Internet. The stories that were once told to pass on knowledge have no relevance, since more accurately stated facts and information are present in many online sources, which have been backed with evidence. Thus, making the stories that were told previously not as accurate or reliable. Just as mentioned above, it is true that with new technological advances there has been less of a need for print. It is also true that without print, some of these innovations would not exist today and it is clear that print is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. My First Day Of College College Freshmen My first day of college is one of the most important experiences of my life. The semester began on August 28, 2017. In that morning, I had plenty of time compared to high school. I overslept because I knew college starts only at 10 a.m. I had an alarm set for 9 a.m. Once I woke, I took a shower and got ready. HACC is about minimum 8 minutes away from my house. By 9:40 a.m., I was on my way to the Harrisburg Area Community College. I was full of confidence that I will reach the campus on time, but the opposite happened. It was my life goal to go to college, however, there came the complication because I was unaware of the incomprehension and unfamiliarity of being freshmen in college. As a former new student, I got a little lost before I arrived at my math class. Once I reached the HACC parking lot, I wasted more than 10 minutes going around the parking lot looking for an empty spot. While I was driving around, I felt very frustrating. Besides, I was running late to class. Unfortunately, I did not consider a full parking lot. Suddenly I remembered, when I came to college orientation I parked my car across a small bridge where a new parking lot was under construction. I drove there and found out they finished constructing the new parking lot. There were a lot of empty parking spots. I parked my car and quickly walked toward Whitaker Hall rushing to find my math class. I had a map of the campus, which listed all names and locations of specific buildings. In ... They were talking about a graphic novel that won the Pulitzer. That peaked my interest, so I decided to research the topic of the book. When I discovered that it was an autobiography about a complex relationship between a father and son, I firmly wanted to read it. The son learning of his father's story of the holocaust was his way of to understand himself and his heritage and the journey is fascinating. When this assignment for generalist practice two came up, I jumped at the opportunity. Maus is a graphic novel. A graphic novel is predominantly told with pictures over words. This novel in particular relies on a strong and realistic artwork to tell its story along with the imagery of mice. The novel was released in two parts, the book format is the two parts put together. It is divided into five chapters, and has 296 pages. The first part was published in 1973 and was completed with the second portion in 1991 to create the final complete book. This was clearly a labor of love and a tribute to his father. There are a multitude of issues in Maus. Loss of loved ones, couple's troubles, competition of dead loved ones, are just to name a few. This treatment will be focused on repairing the father and son relationship. Strained since childhood, their relationship has gotten progressively worse since the death of Art's mother. Well, to get that far, I know I must get through undergraduate school first, let alone graduate school, and so on. Last year I realized that I needed a job that paid much more than minimum wage if I was going to afford to go to college. I then heard about The Bindery from a friend in the same situation as I was. I filled out an application, went to the orientation a few weeks later, and then discovered that working there would be no ordinary job. I will now briefly explain how the factory works and then show you the "ropes" of working in my department. There are two major departments at The Bindery: the press and the ... • 23. Commonplace Book Report What I have noticed through most of the entries in my commonplace book (especially the two stated above) is that I mostly write down something when it induces a negative emotion from me–the quotes that rile me up and make me upset. And usually these are the quotes that remind me of the hardships faced by women. As a woman, sexism is a prevalent issue in my life, so when I fight against it, I am fighting for myself. When I came across the first quote, my mind instantaneously conjured up an image of a mentally exhausted person who was beyond any point of functionality. Unsurprisingly, the person I visualized was a woman. I've noticed this pattern of associating pain and struggle with women is a recurring theme in my life (and is also outlined in the second quote). I know the first quote was used in the context of the gulag and the agony of its prisoners, yet for me, it can also be applied to women, especially those who are victims of abuse. I find this quote raw and emotional. It has come to symbolize women when they are completely broken, even if this was not the context in which it was written. It shows what they can be tuned into. I want us to be in a position of power and be terrifying, be something beyond the limitations of our physical beauty. • 25. Is The Internet Making People Stupid The style of the Internet definitely has an impact on how we read and think, but Carr did not mention another contributing factor. It also has to do with the vast amount of information available on the Internet overwhelming readers. People often do not know where to start when they look up a certain topic because there is so much information to sift through. If people do not find the information they are looking for after clicking through one or two links, they often get discouraged and do not bother to try and dig any deeper for the answer they are looking for. A person trying to do serious research could go through pages upon pages of information online and still only scratch the surface of their topic. It is very difficult for a person to create their own ideas and opinions and think critically when they spend an hour sifting through pages that all say the exact same thing. And while this problem can also be seen with books, it is a bit easier to sift through books to find information, you do not have to worry about whether or not the information in the book is valid unlike Internet sources. Some people do not agree with Carr's view that the Internet is making people stupid, and instead believe that we have never been smarter. Donald Morrison, a contemporary author and former editor of TIME Magazine, gives his response to Carr's book The Shallows, "Just as we survived the advent of the telephone, radio, and television–which experts back then warned would fry our ... Every week I had to read a certain amount of hours. I however, never read the amount of hours I was supposed too. I would just fill out the log and tell my mom to sign it. At that time it sounded like a good idea but then came freshman year. Mrs. Daugherty changed my whole perspective on reading and how important it is to read. In elementary school reading never came easy too me. My mom would always say "The more you read, the better you'll be." but I never listened to her. Books were just not interesting to me. We would have book fairs in our school library and I would always ask my grandma to come and buy me a bunch of books, but in reality I never even read the books that she bought me. I would wonder around the library looking for the perfect book then once I thought I found one, I would read one chapter then be done with it. Most of the time the books would just sit in my room until I got a letter from the librarian saying that the book was past due. Then when I went to return a book, the librarian would always ask "How did you like the book?" and I would reply "It was great I really enjoyed it!", even though I had never even finished the book. The information derived from the series of assessments has helped plan for meaningful instruction, which in the opinion of examiner will meet Kamil's instructional needs and support the increase of motivation towards reading. Below are the recommendations for each area of the instructional need. Attitude about Reading The Motivation to Read Profile survey reveals that Kamil feels good as a reader and he has a positive attitude towards reading. He also seems to read books which he chooses by himself and which are mostly comic books. Therefore, it is important to improve Kamil's motivation and engagement in choosing various genres of literature in order to expose him to the complex nature of English language. One way to increase Kamil's desire to reach for a wide variety of books is implementing activity titled Three–piece Kits (Edmunds & Bauserman, 2006). The teacher creates a three–piece kit containing three different types and/or genres of books in a bag. The kit should contain a narrative text, a poem and an expository book on a topic Kamil finds interesting. The Importance Of Censorship In Libraries Censorship is a huge thing within today's society, Censorship in libraries is when a school board, a parent, or just anyone challenges a book that is explicit with sexual language, homosexuality, and or religion. The meaning of censorship is to ban a book, it's not necessarily up to the library, but more so to the community and the school board. Anyone can challenge a book to be censored, even if it's not explicit, if you personally take offense to a book you can challenge it to be a censored or banned book, but with that you have to have a valid reason on why you want it banned or censored. Including Ten Sleep, Wyoming. On the other hand there's a lot of schools who have just this specific book banned or censored because it is sexually explicit, homosexuality explicit, and religiously explicit. For my second reasoning, books can be challenged, censored, or banned in libraries if the parents, staff, or school board if they do not necessarily agree with their children to read books that are censored in libraries because they could be religious and it could be going against their beliefs and that would affect and cause a lot of chaos for the school district or public library; my prospective and voice on this is that there should be books banned, censored, or challenge because theirs always going to be someone who will take offense to something, wither it is a book, a movie, a magazine, or even a song. Mark Twain a famous poet once quoted, "The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read" and I personally think this is important because I believe that the more experience that you may have in reading or just anything else, the more experience you will have means the more knowledge you have, this is significant because if you can read or hear and you choose not to listen to music or read, you are only hurting yourself because you will have no advantages over anyone. . I remember the fall day that this one special book came into my life. I was sitting in my high school English class when my teacher wheeled a library cart full of books into class. The usual groans of disapproval erupted from the teenagers filling the room but unlike the rest of my classmates, my heart skipped a beat in anticipation. Where others saw an unwanted task, I saw a potential new world to fall in love with. My usual book reports were filled with emotional detachment if the story was one that I did not particularly enjoy. The scenes and topics in this book became intertwined with my own memories and as I put the words on paper it became a quasi–self– narrative of my own life. As I wrote, it became more difficult to separate the fact from the fiction. When it became time to read this report in front of my classmates, the typical nervousness of public speaking was amplified to a level I had never experienced before. The Case Study of "Bookoff, Amazon Japan, and the Japanese Retail Bookselling Industry" Una Hu 1 Why is the profitability of large Japanese retail booksellers relatively poor and their scale relatively small? According to the case, 'stagnation in sales along with the steady increase of costs over time has reduced the profitability of both large chains and small stores' (Peng 2009, p. 391). There are several reasons that results in the relatively poor profitability of large Japanese retail booksellers and their small scale. The large number of bookstores is competing with each other for similar products with similar price. In addition, the Japanese retail bookselling industry has already become an oversaturated market nowadays (Peng 2009, p. 391). Therefore, the rivalry among retail bookstores becomes fairly intense under this circumstance. Also, it is almost certain that potential new entrants can be threatening, owing to the weak competitive power of existing bookstores, to be more specific, their small scale (Peng 2009, pp. 387), i.e. little economies of scale (Peng 2009, p. 37), the lack of uniqueness in their products with similar price (Peng 2009, pp. 390), i.e. shortage of non–scale–based advantages (Peng 2009, p. 37). In addition, the scarcity of entry barriers set by the Japanese government is another factor (Higuchi 2007). 'Entry barriers are advantages that incumbents have relative to new entrants.' (Porter 2008) Additionally, the number of publishers and wholesalers is relatively small compared with the bookstores. Therefore, these distributors have high bargaining power, i.e. they have the choice to favor larger book retailers over small ones because of the Consignment Sale System, i.e. they can obtain higher profit due to larger retailer's lower return rate (Peng 2009, pp. 388–389). There are gadgets that introduced almost daily which are meant to replace "outdated" and "old" ways of living. The invention of e–books was one such creation that was made to make the lives of readers easier and simpler. However, are traditional paper books truly better than e–books? If so, or if not, why? It is time to settle the score. E–books hit the shelves and were (and still are) huge. Visiting a bookstore or waiting for a book to arrive at the house, for many people, takes much too long. Life, today, is all about doing precise work in a short amount of time, and e–books are a way to help consumers do just that. As commented on by Mohsin Hamid of the New York Times, "The advantages of e–books are clear ... I can read an intriguing review of a book...and with the click of a button be reading that book in an instant" (Hamid). Hamid also later commented on the convenience of many features that e–books possess, "it is possible to vary the size of the font...e– books can be read in the dark, self–illuminated" (Hamid). An e–reader can also hold at least a thousand or more books without any extra weight, making e–readers very useful for traveling. His advice to the young was to avoid literature and the arts and to embrace mechanization and become engineers. Shocked by Oswald Spengler conclusion Bellow refused to me obsolete. • 46. The Pros And Cons Of Modern Censorship Duy Nguyen 10/26/17 Prof. Ferrier Watson ENGL 1302 Modern Censorship What is censorship? Censorship means the process to examine a work, a piece of art, etc... in order to suppress or delete any object in it that may seem objectionable or harmful. But why is there censorship? Writing has always been a risky venture, fraught with ethical, political and financial pitfalls. If we look at the history of the world writing, we can see that it is filled with examples of censorship in many aspects ( political, social, personal ) and the authors of those writing have often risked much for the sake of their written words and for the sake of their readers. So is censorship right or wrong? To me, however, I think that there is no clear answer to that question, for censorship has its fair balance of advantages and disadvantages to its certain limit. A lot of people said censorship is right, cause it keeps the young generation safe from the "words" that might ruin their mind, but some said censorship is unnecessary because of it just words and sooner or later all kids will hear and know what those words mean. In my opinion, some part of censorship is good but it depends on the limit that is taken and how extreme censorship goes. I do agree with one advantage that most people also agree about is that censorship helps protects the young, the innocent and the vulnerable. We formed a nightly routine of reading every night before bed as soon as I started learning the basics of reading. I enjoyed every moment of this; it was my favorite part of the day. The first book I was able to read on my own was "One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish" by Dr. Seuss. The feeling of success I had after this accomplishment is as clear as day and I can still see myself as a five–year–old beaming with joy when I could finally read a book without assistance. In grade school, I was never the one who was passionate about reading. However, when it came time to write a story, I was excited and even wrote stories on my own. In third grade, my friends and I would write fictional stories during lunchtime and present them to our teacher after recess. I can still remember the sense of pride we felt when we saw the surprised and proud looks on our teacher's face. It made us want to write more and more. But years went on, and I still never formed a fondness for recreational reading. I've been assigned more than five books a year in the past; some would catch my interest, but never enough to pull me in as much as to read in my spare time. • 50. Article Analysis : Harper Lee 's ' Kill A Mockingbird ' A lot of books that get banned are due to having real world events, and certain words that are censoring students from history, and reality. "Harper Lee's book has been challenged by black parents who object to the use of the word "nigger"." (Rohrer). Although the word is disrespectful to use, it's a part of history that can't be erased. "To Kill a Mockingbird" uses the word 58 times in the book, but without it, the book wouldn't have an accurate representation of that time era. The fact that some religions, origins, and ethnicities get offended by this is understandable, but by trying to ban the books from schools it is restricting information from the whole student body not only their child. The history that is being shown by the use of "nigger" only teaches the time era we have lived and points out how far we have come from. History is what has happened in the past, and what has shaped us today. The past defines us and is a reminder of where we came from, but also shows us what we learned from our mistakes. It initially builds our moral values and is memories of time eras and accomplishments. Parents can't just erase the events that they don't like, otherwise, they aren't allowing their children to know the truth of what has happened in our past. This takes away knowledge from students and ultimately makes them naive. Covering the issues of this world with rainbows and butterflies. • 52. Essay On Strengths And Weaknesses Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses in an area, but our weaknesses can improve and be turned into another strength. One of my main weaknesses was reading and comprehension skills; whether it being a book, article, or even notes. It's something I have always struggled with, but every weakness can improve into a strength depending on how badly you're willing to work for it. Comprehension while I read was my largest issue, and it would be so awful to where I would read a whole story and still question what the plot was about. I would need all the help I could find for English classes throughout school because my grade would always slip when there was a reading assignment. Teacher's assumed that I didn't care about my grade and they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was my senior year of high school and English 4 CP was the one class that made me anxious because I had no hope in doing well, considering that I struggled deeply with English 1 CP. Many thoughts ran through my head, which only made me more nervous for this class. My plan was to just use Google to help me find the easy short written plot to any book we would read for class. The teacher ended up making us read a book of our choice every Thursday during the entire class period. I would grab a book and pretend to read it, just by staring at the pages and pretending to flip to the next because I thought there was no use since I wouldn't understand it anyway. During the school year, I built a relationship with my teacher and I talked to her about many aspects. One day I was telling her how much I loved math because it was like a simple puzzle and the pieces easily fit into the problems. She told me that English was a puzzle as well and that's why it's her favorite subject. She further explained that a book is a puzzle because it obtains a series of events that you must piece together. I told her that for me, reading was like having too many difficult little pieces and I couldn't find the right fit. She began to open my eyes by discussing that a challenging puzzle is the best kind because it allows your mind to think more and explore. My teacher gave me tips with reading by telling me to look up the words I don't understand in a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Over the five year period until 2015–6, there was an annual decline in revenue of 10.6% (ibisworld, 2016). Numerous challenges have beset the industry, such as, lower book prices, strong competition from online retailers and a change in popularity from printed books to e–books (ibisworld, 2016). Other issues that have a significant effect on bookstores are parallel import restrictions (IBISWorld, 2016), and online retailers being advantaged by low freight charges and often no requirement to pay (GST) Goods and Services Tax (ABC, 2016). Encouraging Signs However, there are encouraging signs according to Williams, (2015) who points to the icon of bookstores Dymocks, which claims to have had its best ever sales year. Sydney book retailer Jon Page noted an upward surge in sales in the final quarter leading up to Christmas, a period that accounts for around 70% of annual sales (Han, 2015). According to the Nielsen book scan data, there were 55.4 million in sales of printed books in Australia last year, a 2.2% increase over the previous year, the first sales increase since 2009. (Han, 2015). Some of the downturns in printed book sales may be as a result of economic conditions which have affected all retailers. Beside her, was a book. The book had long vines that have grown out of it. The vines grew longer, and longer, and longer, until they reached to the end of her bed, then to the floor, and then to her door. A few months earlier, there was a man named Mark Linden. He wanted to own a book store. When he thought about buying a store. He searched the streets for stores or shops that have been closed down and weren't in use. It took him a long time to find the right one that made him feel at home. He found a medium sized shop after looking for a few days. It looked as if it hadn't been in use for at least 10 years. Inside of it was a cold, dark room filled with spider webs. The smell was very foul like a rats nest. There was no light in the room. He was mad that there was no light and that he would have to go get light bulbs and lamps. When he got the light bulbs, he replaced them and then worked on cleaning up. He dusted the bookshelves, swept the floor, and cleaned the computers. After a month or so, he started to get a lot of people to come to his shop to buy books, because no one else in the town worked at or owned a place where you could get books at the time. The business started to get better and better, then the girl came to borrow a book. Her name was Lucy, and she is 8 years old. Her family was poor and she barely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

During this Report we will be looking at the different types of resources available for new learners in Health and social care. I will be reviewing four different types of resources I have researched. I will also explain why they are presented differently from one another and the different types of ways these resources can be presented by the media. The book I used as a resource (Understanding Health and Social Care, Second edition, Julia Johnson, Sage publications, 2010) contained references, so that I knew where the piece of information was coming from and that it was from a reliable source. It had a contents page, with the chapter and page number, making it easier for myself to find a particular subject. There was also an index pages, which helped me to locate useful information. There was a lot of technical words and some jargon in this book and I did have to make a note of the words I didn't fully understand in order to go back and look them up to fully understand. Books can be presented by the media through the radio, billboards, television, social media sites and the internet. Understanding Health and social care is targeted at students and people working within the Health and social care sector. It is presented differently because it has lots of references and is updated when new information comes out or when what was previously written in the book has now become outdated. Journals – A journal is subject based and is written by experts and professionals. A journal is usually researched based and will be based upon facts with references/ evidence to support the writer's findings. Journals are known as periodical as they are published at regular intervals which could also make them a better resource than a book. The resource (Psychology review, volume 20, April 2015) was ... I then told her I was looking for books for business classes, so she directed me to the business section of the store. She then asked me what the CRN was. I told her the CRN and she found the book. She then asked if I was buying the book today, but I could not buy the book because it was more expensive than I thought. I told her not today because of that reason. She then gave me the alternate option, which was to buy the book online for a cheaper price. So I listened to her advice and brought the book online. This to me was a great interaction because she didn't let me leave without knowing all my options, she answer all of my questions, and helped me right away when I approached her. She used most of the selling sequence. Today I went to Walmart to buy a laptop fan because I notice my laptop overheated a lot. I went to the electronic section and I was approached by a man and his name tag said Larry. He first asked "how can I help you today?" • 64. The Benefits Of Mandated Reading In High School Reading has not really been one of my strong points. I remember my mom reading to me at a very young age, but that was listening not reading. So, one could say, listening was a big part of my life, but reading was not. Reading is not something I do for pleasure. I see reading as something I am taxed with, something I must do. I am repeatedly punished with required summer reading and textbook reading. There is no joy or pleasure trying to read chapter after chapter, only because you HAVE TO. The fun in reading, especially in high school, has been killed by education and turned into the chore worse than any other. The days of blissfully listening to a book have long past. Mandated reading in high school invariably means a look at the past and being educated by the "classics". The meanings of books are shouted at students. These book have been read countless times by an innumerable people and high school students are expected to regurgitate exactly what these outdated "classics" are all about. Students are expected to figure out these "classics" and are brainwashed to find the importance of select literary terms like tone, mood, and purpose. I find it ironic that as a high school student, I am expected to relate to a middle–aged author from 100 years ago. I am personally sick of being shouted at. I miss simpler times when I could really understand the meaning of a book, it whispered softly at me and did not yell at me and cause me to cringe. But I am not here to tell people what I think about reading, I am here to talk about how it has shaped me. So, buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy ride. Rewind to childhood. I was read the commonplace child's books and I can vividly remember each and every one of the Dr. Seuss books. In addition, my mom continued to bribe me to "read" by reading just about anything relating to Thomas the Tank Engine. Again, I was not really reading, but I was listening. I became a very good listener. My childhood "reading" continued until my younger brother learned how to read at which point my mom no longer read out loud to us, but rather I was expected to read independently. I resisted change, as most people do, and chose to read only books with pictures. My choice ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Rhetorical Analysis Of ' Snow Falling On Cedars ' I sit in this AP Language and Composition class trying to decipher the essence of the unending annotations and floods of random texts for the past quarter. Welty best describes her encounter of this by explaining "my imagination takes its strength and guides its direction from what I see and hear and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. The Inconvenience Of Hastings Entertainment Mark Doerr English 101 13, October, 2016 The Inconvenience of Hastings Entertainment Throughout our entire lives we are taught structure. Structure that repeats itself. Each night we set our alarms to the same time previous. We awake robotically, work, interact with the same faces, and then return to our homes to trace the process. So where do we rely on our imagination to come from? The vast majority of us cut it out of our cycle and replace it with a television. Some of us, however, still pick up a book. To fantasize about things that don't actually exist, to escape from reality for just a speck of time. I am of few in this internet– driven society that still read. Which for me involves going to a bookstore to look for a good book. Nowadays there are few bookstore opportunities. Due to Amazon and Kindle making it easier to press a few buttons than to drive somewhere to find it. The only two bookstore chains I know of in the Spokane area are Barns & Noble and Hastings Entertainment. I usually go to Hastings on 29th street, because it's only about ten blocks from my house. However I have begun to realize that Hastings Entertainment is an inconvenient bookstore for its customers because there is an unreliable computer system, not enough employees to help assist a customer and the store is always re– arranged. There is an outdated computer system for books to be located throughout the store. The computer system Hastings has makes it very difficult to search for a book, and ... • 75. Difference Between Digital Reading And Digital Reading Digital Reading vs. Printed Reading For a person who loves to read, I could never imagine myself reading on a screen when it comes to the choice of print or digital reading. Whether it is for research, schoolwork, or just for fun, the articles I find online only encourages me to print them so that I could have a physical copy in my hands. That's when the inseparable feeling occurs to me: I feel more of an attachment between the physical copy of the text and myself. I become so indulged in the text that my surroundings disappear. I can ultimately understand what I'm reading and grasp all the book's pearls. Many people who enjoy reading can reminisce with the same feelings that I have experienced. Even many of those who read for the sake of completing a task can admit that there's not much of a strain when comparing print to digital reading. This is why reading from a book is still a necessity in our daily lives: it allows for a better grasp of information, greater memory production, and an enjoyable experience that the reader can always appreciate. When we read from books, our brains can attain more information at a more accurate and faster rate, resulting in greater scores when displaying comprehension skills in the long run. Lauren Singer and Patricia Alexander, scholars of University of Maryland, proves this instance in their experiment, Reading Across Mediums: Effects of Reading Digital and Print Texts on Comprehension and Calibration (2016). • 77. Your Writing Style Essay Your Writing Style How can one person know what good style is when writing a paper? Where is it written that we as students should have to follow specific guidelines while writing? Anyone wanting to make their writing clear, precise, and simply correct will usually try following some type of guideline, or book in order to perfect their own writing style. After reading both The Elements of Style by Strunk and White, and also Williams's Style toward Clarity and Grace I can see why teachers discuss these books as tools for correcting and perfecting their students writing, and style. While at the same time understand someone out of the classroom setting, brushes up on their skills in writing with these books before they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead of calling these books rule books they should be called suggestive writing tip books. Whereas, before someone thought if they did not follow the rule they were breaking it, now they can feel they are simply choosing to ignore some advice that may or may not have been helpful to them. This helps them to understand that not every time they "break" a rule is wrong, sometimes choosing to ignore the advice can have positive effects on their writing. Strunk and White, and Williams use very different approaches when addressing the issue of style. Strunk and White, apply more of a straight forward approach strictly telling the reader to follow their rules word for word. Although, many students and teachers believe it is a mystery why they choose the rules in style that they put into their book. Are these places where students have the most trouble with their style, and diction? If not, then are they the pet peeves of an overtly critical no– nonsense teacher? It was my understanding that overall the students should not question the advice being given them; they should simply follow the rules with no questions asked. After going through the blogs I came across Paula Newsom's, she felt the same way I did about Strunk and White's method for addressing style in their book. According to Paula's blog "any style book that makes a reader presume that its rules are engraved in stone suggests that there is only one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 79. Commonplace Book Analysis A little over three months ago, I, along with thousands of other freshmen, embarked on a scary, yet exciting new chapter in our lives. Most of us, myself included, thought that we were well prepared for our first classes as college students. If I were asked what I had learned during college, I would have a hard time stating anything other than useless facts related to my classes. My commonplace book includes posts from throughout the semester that express my progression as both a student and a person. While I was rereading entries from my commonplace book, I was reminded of the dejected feeling that I had at the beginning of each unit. It was almost amusing to me to see how fearful I was of each project and then see how I gradually progressed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first tag is "learning". It may seem obvious but I learned so much about not the only the writing process, but in my self too. Nearly all of my entries in the commonplace book discuss some lesson that I learned from the time when I figured out MLA format to when I finally realized how to revise the style of my papers. The second tag is "Fear of Failure". One of my favorite quotes is from Gena Showalter that says "Giving up is the only sure way to fail". One of my biggest problems throughout the semester was being discouraged right from the beginning, which I talked about in each unit reflection. Once I overcame the fear of screwing up the project, I was finally able to get to work and spit out some pretty good material. My third tag is "Resiliency". I thought about combining resiliency and fear of failure but the more that I thought about it, I realized that they were completely different. Resiliency deals with the extreme amount of effort that I put into each any ever piece that I brought to class even though I would rather be doing literally anything else. It also covers all of the times when I had no clue what I was doing and had to start over from scratch, even though I could have easily turned in a piece that would have received an okay grade. "Differences" is my fourth tag. The idea of differences first came to me when we were working on the Op–Doc analysis and each had videos that were all polar opposites of each other. Not only were the styles of our Op–Docs different, but so were the styles in which we wrote our analyses. In high school we learn how to do everything just like one another, but in college we finally open our eyes and see that being different is what makes us who we are. My final tag is "Creative Edge". It took me to the late half of the semester to finally find my creative edge. Because it took me so long to find it, I had started to think that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
