Evaluation question 2
1. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
What are the social groups represented in terms of gender, age, class, and
race?
Within my opening sequence the male gender is represented, they are shown
to be a typical south London teenage boy, this is shown through costume as
he is wearing a tracksuit, which is very typical of what boys in south London
commonly wear. This is good, as it will make the film more relatable to young
boys from London as they will feel as though this character is similar to them
individually as well as the people they surround themselves with. However the
main female character is not shown in a way that is typically related to a
female. For example throughout the film and the opening sequence the
female character is a stalker and she shows psychotic traits and
characteristics, which is not usually associated with a female however it is
appropriate for the character, however the fact that the character is a female
and there is a stereotypical female used within the opening sequence will
make this film appeal to characters as they will be able to relate to the
stereotypical girly female character and also they may be able to relate to the
position of the psychotic female as she has been replaced with this new
female. With the opening sequence and throughout the film the main age that
is represented is teenagers of the age of 18/19 however they are acted by
people of the age of 16/17, which makes the film relatable to all teenagers
and creates a sense of verisimilitude as these are situation that could happen
in every day life, this film is just an exaggerated version which means that
there will still be suspense and excitement created within the film. In this
opening sequence the class is not generally looked at as there is no place for
it within the film and it doesn’t seem to contain any relevance however the
background class of the characters is working class and this is shown with
the settings in the opening sequence and throughout the film as they are
living in fairly ‘ordinary’ and standard living area. The race in this film is
generally black and mixed race and this is not a purposeful decision however
this adds some realism to the setting of the film being set in south London.
Is gender represented in a stereotypical way?
Within the opening sequence and within this film the males and females are
generally presented in a stereotypical way as they show traits of stereotypical
male and female from south London, this is shown through the way they
dress and speak. However usually within film the female is shown as the
victim and the male is shown, as the more dominant character however
within our film the roles have been reversed and the female is the psychotic
and extreme character whereas the male is victim and vulnerable character,
this is effective as the role change can create more suspicion within the film
as the actions from the woman would be less expected and would shock the
audience. As well as that the fact that characters do not conform to typical
conventions of gender this film will stand out and during advertising which
would a attract more of an audience outside of the target audience.
How does this link to the target audience?
The target audience for this film is British teenagers and young adults up to
the age of 24, however we do expect that some older people may be attracted
to the idea of the film as the storyline of this film may be relatable to the
older generation and this means that this film could appeal to those of all
age ranges. The storyline would also appeal to teenagers, as they may have
been in a similar situation however this would be an exaggerated version of
what is relatable to them. The characters within this film are also of a teen
2. age which is who the target audience is, this makes the film relevant and
allows for the audience to largely wide as the amount of teenagers within
Britain is huge. The fact that gender is not always conformed to within this
film could affect the target audience in a good way as this will increase the
amount of people that want to watch it as though who like to see different
films are able to watch it and also those who like to understand the
characters within the film are also able to.
