Latino Immigrant Families
Service Needs among Latino Immigrant Families: Implications for Social Work Practice This article is about a Social Worker advocating for
undocumented Latino families here in the United States. The article addresses the needs for undocumented Latino immigrants as they attempt to settle
in America. These needs include mental health, physical health care, education, information and support services, and community effort. It talks about
the economic crisis that has left the Latinos with higher unemployment rates. In certain parts of the country, it is mandatory to have documents proving
their legal residency in the U.S before receiving health care services. The strengths of this article is that the author uses information from a survey that

Undocumented Latino Immigrants
The Itching Palm "Everywhere immigrants have enriched and strengthened the fabric of American life," (John F. Kennedy). Latino immigrants are
some of the most unappreciated members of the US population, yet they constantly keep the United States alive, and thriving. They frequently get
taken advantage of by big corporations, denied their rights, and are never taken seriously by law enforcement, all because of their limited English and
their lack of familiarity with the United States workplace. One such company that carries out such devious tactics is a company by the name of, Taylor
Farms. Undocumented Latino immigrants at Taylor Farms need a voice, because it is a moral obligation to expose and eradicate this form of modern
slavery. Impoverished ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"While a myriad of laws exist at the state and federal level to protect undocumented workers from exploitation, discrimination and abuse, enforcement is
often lax and many in the legal community have turned a blind eye, or worse, have watched undisturbed while their clients commit crimes against
humanity" (Lazar). The problem does not reside in the lack of laws that protect undocumented workers, but the lack of willingness from the government
to enforce these policies in the everyday workplace. "The current movement of non–profit worker centers across the country–empowering immigrant
workers to defend their employment rights and recover their dignity in the workplace–is a vital sign of progress. But it must be complemented with a
real commitment from the public and private sector to protect the rights of all workers" (Workplace Fairness). Workers from the Tracy, California
factory decided to take things in their own hands, they organized multiple protests against Taylor Farms, they set up a Teamsters accounts, and have
also created an Appeal for Justice to inform the CEO of Taylor Farms, Bruce Church Taylor, of the unjust conditions that the workers suffer

Essay On Latino Patients
Latino Patients Demographics The ethnic terms Latino or Hispanics refer to a diverse population of Latin American descent that includes many
nationalities and races. Latino refers to a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin,
regardless of race. Latinos comprised nearly 16 percent of the US population in 2009, making them the largest minority group. By 2050, it is projected
that they will comprise up to 30 percent of the US. The three largest subgroups include Mexican Americans, (about 65 percent), mostly settled in the
Southwest, Puerto Rican, (9.1 percent) in the urban Northeast, and Cuban Americans (3.5 percent) in Florida. About 23 percent of Latinos in the US
live in poverty. Language barrier is a significant obstacle to obtaining healthcare. Many hospitals lack trained interpreters and rely on interpretation by
bilingual staff or even the children of patients. Another barrier is the inability to afford health insurance. Nearly one–third of Latinos (30.7 percent)
lack coverage. Another barrier stems from cultural... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These include kindness, friendliness and respect. Kindness can be achieved by asking about the patient and his or her family. People stand closer
to each other in most Latino cultures. Physical proximity is perceived as being more personable. Respect implies attentive concern for the patient
and respect for his or her personhood and age, especially if the patient is older. Older patients should be addressed as senor or senora rather by first
names. Elders have a prestigious status in the Hispanic family because of their experience. Family members look to them for support, comfort and
advice. They may recommend safe, simple home remedies. In the traditional home, the man is the head of the family and makes all major decisions.
There is a strong sense of male dominance, but the female role is

Latino Childhood Obesity
South Carolina has one of the highest rates of obesity in the nation and, proportionately, more Latino children aged 2–5 years are obese compared to
black and white children in the state (Torres, Meetze, & Smithwick–Leone, 2013). In fact, the proportion of obesity among South Carolina Latino
children between the ages of 2 and 5 years in 2009 was 37.3% compared to 27.3% and 26.4% for black and white children, respectively (Torres,
Meetze, & Smithwick–Leone, 2013). Moreover, in 2011, about half of all middle–school children were not active, and approximately 30% of high
school students were considered overweight or obese (Torres, Meetze, & Smithwick–Leone, 2013). These high numbers of overweight and obese

–13 years did not participate
in organized physical activity during non–school hours (Torres, Meetze, & Smithwick–Leone, 2013). Latino and black parents were more likely than
white parents to perceive transportation, opportunities in their area, and cost as major barriers to physical activity participation by their children
(Torres, Meetze, & Smithwick–Leone, 2013). In addition, Latino parents were more apt to be concerned about neighborhood safety (41.2%) as
opposed to white (8.5%) and black (13.3%) parents (Torres, Meetze, & Smithwick–Leone, 2013). They reported more concern for their daughters

Latino Culture, Culture And Culture In The Latino Community
The Latino community is not just a group of people with the same heritage, but a family who works together to give others a better life and success.
Being a Latina in such a world where minorities do not have as many opportunities as the privileged majority is very difficult. Especially in these
times where minorities aren't able to have a say in their government and are attacked for their heritage. However, standing together as a community
against oppression can be just as powerful as a united whole. It is our responsibility to bring a voice to the people of our community and join together.
Making friends in the Latino(a) community is the best part. Helping each other with problems within our understanding about the minority issues we
all face as a whole and individually is emotionally and physically draining. It is great to know others feel the same way you do and want to make just
as much as a difference, in representing ourselves with pride as the latino(a) community. Many of us gathered to form a class in our school designed to
educate about the culture, history, and origins of the Mexican–American, Latino(a), hispanic, Mexican, chicano(a), and however other minorities
identify themselves as. Many have joined hoping to learn about the civilizations, societies, traditions, cultures, and heritage this course has to offer to
enlighten their minds of the Latino(a) community.

Latino Stereotypes
"He's a young Latino what is he doing in this neighborhood? he must be lost, he has to be poor." that's just one of the stereotypes I hear often.
"Hispanic people are poor" When in fact most Hispanics are well off. Yet repeatedly I have heard that stereotype in movies, songs, shows, and
school. I have been through this many times as I have lived up through 19 years of existence. Its something that I have gotten accustomed too. I
enter a gated community, and I can feel dozens of eyes absorbing my skin. It does not phase me. I keep driving. as I park I step out of the car and I
can hear gasps and women saying "kids get in the house" it may sound extreme but I can understand where they are coming from. Those comments

Hispanics And Latinos And Hispanics
There is a significant difference between Latinos and Hispanics, but they are also exceedingly closely related. It is important to remember that these
terms refer to ethnicity, not race. Latinos and Hispanics are two different words that may or may not mean the same thing. Some people say Hispanics
are those descending from Spain and speak Spanish. Others say it is not the same because Latinos include people from Latin American countries. Since
this would include non–Spanish speaking countries it is not the same as Hispanic. So technically speaking you can be one without the other but a
person can also be both. Latinos and Hispanics have a long history here in the United States of America. The term "Hispanic" is most often used by
the government, which is what will be used through the rest of this document. Hispanics are the fastest growing group in the United States and their
numbers will continue to increase as years go by. Mexicans are the largest subgroup of Hispanics making up 66% of the population while the other
34% includes Central and South Americans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, and other Hispanic origins. California, Texas, and Florida have the highest
populations of Hispanics. In regards to health insurance, Hispanics have the highest rates of uninsured in the United States. Hispanics tend to have
very close family ties. In times of trouble they turn to family members for support. They more often than not make decisions as a family and not as an
individual. Family

Reflection On Latinos
Imagine all your life you been surrounded with people that have the same characteristic as you. You didn't even know that you been separated into a
group in which you classify in depending where you live, the color of your skin and income level. All my life I have been surrounded with latinos,
the group I belong to at school, where I live, and daily activities i do. I didn't even know my race impacted my life until I went to college and explored
places out of my comfort zone. Throughout history people have been separated into a specific group based on the color of their skin and how they
physically look. These groups were separated into a dominant and nondominant group, which were whites the dominant group and minorities
(african americans, asians, mexicans etc...) the non dominant group, but as times passes by minorities start to rebel to have equal dominance as
whites. Now we have more freedom and power in this world. I am going to share experience I had when I was growing up that impacted my life being
the race I am. I grew up in a poor area in the san fernando valley next to the projects. The projects is known to be a horrible scary place because of the
people who live in it mostly poor latinos. If you go in that area you would see latinos with tattoos on their body and some of them were bald. People
who were not from these areas would describe them as scary people that look violent because of the way they look and stare at people. I am of afraid of
the people of my kind to because I was walking outside and I witnessed someone getting stabbed by the people that represent my race. I literally ran
as fast I can home because I was scared and keep in mind that I just entered high school. After what i have seen I didn't want to be like my people. The
high school I went wasn't diverse at all and It was basically latinos. Most of my classmates/school friends were a bad influence on me so I try not to
interact with them as much as possible because they would get into trouble and do drugs. I have seen them smoking weed outside of class and
disrespect teachers by talking crap to them in spanish. This is devastating because we are representing our race in a bad way that creates stereotypes,
but it all depends

Hispanic, Latino, And Spanish
The interpretation of the words Hispanic, Latino, and Spanish have different meanings. Those who identify as Latino are from the Latin American
heritage. The word Latino is a geographical sense. Latinos can be from the Caribbean such as Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic or from
South America. The word Hispanic may offend Latinos because it was created by the US Government to define all people who speak Spanish. The
term Hispanic was originally meant to classify the people of the Iberian Peninsula or Hispania and Spanish refers to anything related to the country of
Spain. Even if certain groups were not from the same place or origin, they were put in the same category. Brazilians were even put in this category
although they speak Portuguese

Growing In A Latino Community
I am grateful that the place that I grew up in and the schools I've attended are overall highly diverse because these experiences exposed me to where
other people come from and their point of views. As part of my personal beliefs and values of growing in a Latino community, I must be welcoming
and respectful to others despite of people's appearance or background.
Over the course of high school, I have engaged in my community in various ways. For one, I have donated my time volunteering for health–related
organizations that promote good causes, such as the "Heart Walk" for the American Heart Association and the Alzheimer's Walk. Over the summer of
2017, I assisted nurses in maternal fetal medicine with clerical work through the VolunTeen program

I have grown up listening to Hip–Hop just as I did listening to my mother's blaring Bachata and Merengue every Sunday morning and from what I
can recall, the artists I primarily listened to were black, or Eminem. The only Spanish rappers I did listen to were Reggaeton artists, meaning I did not
listen to many predominately English speaking Latino rappers. This revelation of my early musical tastes begs the question as to why I was not
exposed to more Latino rappers during the late nineties and early millennium. In learning about how Latino's have participated within the realm of

African–American acceptance of Latino culture stems largely from similar experiences of prejudice and shared African roots. In addition, black
hip–hop has included various Latino elements, illustrating growing acceptance and integrations between both parties. Various elements present in black
hip–hop include Spanglish lyrics, rumba rhythms (Morales 300–301), and the celebration and desire for a Latina woman, who shares similar physique
to African–American women (Rivera 131–132). In examining Latino Hip–Hop history, an overall theme of inclusion and exclusion emerges, where
Latinos are included if they provide something desirable and marketable and excluded due to their ethnicity. Because of this, the need to affirm Latin
identity becomes a necessity in order to solidify the Latino presence within the genre. Latino rap takes on the Latin American experience and builds
upon to tell poetic stories of pride, unity, and discrimination throughout Latino history. This theme of being proud of one's roots plays a central role in
how Spanish speaking rappers may or may not conduct themselves. For many, the following lyrics illustrate pride in the face of discrimination: Now

Latino Population In America
Summary:
An analysis was done on the large population of Latinos in America by The Pew Research Center of U.S. Census Bureau. Results following the test
showed that the Dispersion and growth of the population has slowed since the Great Recession happened in December of 2007. The Latino
population had been on a steady growth from 2000 to 2007 which was at an all time high of 4.4%, but has slowly fallen to a mere 2.4% in the
following years. A major factor as to why this is happening isImmigration and birth rates in America shifting drastically. This is most likely due to
Border enforcement that has been put in effect in the past years. The large Growth in population that started around 1990s was due to the fact that the

Immigration is referred to people moving from one country to another.. While migration is people moving from one area to a different area. The
whole article is discussing how the population of Latinos in America is slowly decreasing. However, for this to even occur immigration had to have
happened. Many Latinos immigrated to America to find job opportunities to better the lives of themselves and/or their families. But in recent years
Border enforcement has been put into effect very largely. This caused fertility rates to drop in Hispanic Women, with the addition to the great
recession happening, much of the population started to fall. Lastly, many job opportunities were not present, which further turns away immigration to
America. I believe that the Latino population is absolutely vital in our society. Whether it be that its providing an enriched culture, new job
opportunities, and the hard workers that are hispanics. They are a large part of what makes up our society, and especially our economy. In sum, if I
had to pick a feeling towards the decline, it would definitely be a negative one. Because as I stated in this paragraph latinos are much more complex

Discrimination Among Latinos
Latinos are the largest minorities in the U.S. Familialismo, simpatico, personalismo, spiratuilty, and acceptance of life are important values that are
shared by many Latinos. Men are referred to as machismo, a dominance and superior trait, while women are marianismo, nurturing and carry
responsibilities. Hispanic parenting styles are viewed as authoritative, which has been passed down from generations. Many of the beliefs from Latinos
traditions come from roman catholic church. According Almanza, a Latino man working in the helping profession chosen to be interviewed, believes
that family and church are the two places that man Latinos turn to when seeking to find assistance or help that might be facing He also mentions that a
lot of the problems they bring him stems from immigrations or legal issues assistance. Almanza also explains that teenagers from immigrants face the

Nativism is a concept embedded in the LatCrit that focuses on discrimination that Latinos face based on their birthplace. Using the praxis approach,
social workers should gain skills to help and encourage self–empowerment for the LatCrit scholars. Social work practice with the respect to the LatCrit
perspective focuses on both mess and macro challenges of the individuals and self–criticism. LatCrit approach could have some challenges for the
social work practice; the approach may not represent the truth about their lives and on discrimination and oppression, it can make situations worst, and
using more of the macro perspective could make it challenging. Social workers can encourage the LaCrit perspective by advocating policy, facilitating
organization for the community, promoting solutions structure education in communities, and creating strategies to decrease

Barriers Against Latinos
The question I was assigned is, "What barriers are preventing Latinos from seeking help?" In class we discussed homelessness and everyone came up
with different questions. I have to compare my question with the barriers that homeless Latinos face in seeking help. The articles that I found to
compare are about domestic violence, machismo, immigrants, and health issues. My first key finding is about residency. One factor that deters victims
from seeking help is having an unstable residency (Reina & Lohman, 2015). Latinos have also thought that if they seek help from the justice system can
lead to their deportation (Reina & Lohman, 2015). That can compare to the homelessness because they may not be here legally and they don't want to
expose themselves. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By having more bilingual, it will help the homeless feel more comfortable to reach out to someone. Also since some people come here from their
country with nothing, offer services to get them started. Maybe programs like workshops to be ready to find a job or a certain time living rent free.
Find where the majority of Latino homelessness takes place. Then in that area make sure to have people put up information of where a homeless
person can go for help. Posting up fliers on visual places and even passing them out to people will make things more known. Also just talking to the
homeless personally just in case they don't know how to read. The homeless should feel it is safe to turn to the agency for

Stereotypes In Latino Culture
Drugs and violence are universal. Although not all drugs cause violence some drugs like alcohol, methamphetamine, and crack cocaine do and can
have horrible results. Some of the behavior that these drugs can cause are: domestic violence, sexual assault, homicides, and property crimes. Although
horrible things do happen people still use them and crimes like these happen too much. This is a social issue because people see this as a norm. This
shouldn't be a norm and people need to start realizing that.
Accordingly, it all comes down to culture. It's what people create and it affects absolutely everyone but in their own way. Latinos are usually seen as
sassy or even rude at least that's the stereotype for them. The men in Latino culture usually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although women have gotten all of their rights they still get treated all less in various situations. Women are seen as vulnerable creatures but they
are equal as men are. Men aren't the only ones who can do drugs and be violent. If you are a latina and want to do the same things as the boys most
chances are that you aren't able too. It's as if the parents aren't caught up. The girls are expected to clean the house and cook, while the guys usually
are expected to mow the lawn and do work on the house. Children do exactly what they see their parents doing and if the child is in a violent
environment with drugs they will grow up that way. The norm then becomes to be violent or to have a violent significant other. This will lead to other
things such as domestic violence and even some time done based on what people are capable of

Latino Immigrants Stereotypes
Latinos are all illegal immigrants/dangerous thugs who sleep around, do drugs, and break the law, universal generalizations seen in the twenty–first
century. Stereotypes have become a method of systematic suppression in America, a way to judge Latino immigrants and their children, to trap them in
an endless cycle of misery and discrimination. Michael Dorris perfectly explains negative stereotypes influencing a minority in "Crazy Horse Malt
Liquor". Dorris describes the stereotypical views of Native Americans, and how they have a pattern of being negative, similar to how stereotypes about
Latinos tend to be negative. The people of America form opinions based on stereotypes, stereotypes about Latinos that aren't necessarily true.
Stereotypes have become part of a system;Hollywood exploits them and then used as a form of judgment, which harms both the physical and mental
health of both Latino immigrants and Latino citizens. I first wanted to look at how stereotypes about Latino immigrants influenced children,
particularly in school systems. The article "Double Disadvantage or Signs of Resilience? The Elementary School Contexts of Children From Mexican
Immigrant Families", by Robert Crosnoe, examines the effect negative stereotyping has had on children of Latino immigrants, specifically in the
education system. Children of Latino immigrants represent one of the fastest growing populations in the American education system (Crosnoe).

Depression in the Latino Community
Part I: What I Know and What I Want to Know
The Latino community, from immigrating to United States born Latinos are often known to be depressed. Depression is a medical illness that causes a
constant feeling of sadness and lack of interest, it affects how the person feels, behaves and thinks. Many Latinos rely on their extended family,
community, traditional healers, or churches for help during a health crisis. As a result, many Latinos with mental illnesses often go without professional
mental treatment. But why is it that Latinos are so reluctant to receiving help? Sheila Dichoso states that, "there are only 29 Latino mental–health

Latino Culture Essay
The number of Latinos in the United States more than doubled between 1980 and 2000, accounting for 40 percent of the growth in the country's
population during that period. And in 2003 the U.S. Census Bureau designated Latinos as the nation's largest minority group, an amazing event given
that in 1980 the Latino population was only slightly more than half the size of the African American population.
The Latino population has had an impact not only on the U.S. population, but also on other aspects of U.S. society. This can be seen, for example, in

The continued flows of Latino immigrants ensure that the Spanish language and diverse Latino cultures will endure in the United States. The
combination of established and newcomer Latinos in the United States further enhances the diversity that exists across and within Latino groups.
But the experiences of the various Latino groups in the United States have been quite different, and even the blurring of place and linguistic boundaries
has not eliminated one important distinction. Mexicans and Puerto Ricans are the two groups that were initially incorporated into the United States
through warfare. They have been "colonized groups.". Throughout their long history in the United States, Mexicans and Puerto Ricans have occupied a
low position in the nation's social and economic hierarchy. Even U.S.–born Mexicans and mainland–born Puerto Ricans occupy a low position among
the various groups that constitute the Latino population.
In contrast, other Latino groups have come to the United States as voluntary immigrants, either escaping political persecution or in search of economic
opportunity. By and large, these groups have tended to fare better socially and economically, the exception being Dominicans and foreign–born Central
Americans.

Latinos Stereotypes In Films
In the previous chapter, introduction of six Latinos' stereotypes were briefly presented in the studying of Latinos images in films (Berge: 2002), so
this chapter 3 is responsible for explaining and analyzing several characteristics of Latinos stereotype thoroughly. These results are similar to the
investigation by Berumen (1995). Latinos negative stereotypes were portrayed as "waiters, bandits, Latin lovers, prostitutes, gang members, and drug
dealers". Numerous researchers used various methodologies to study and talk about Latinos' stereotypes, the most common of which are criminals,
bandits, gang members, drug dealers, prostitutes and so forth. Sometimes these stereotypes have more overlapping, even slightly confusing distinctness
because several stereotypes could appear in a person. However, among of negative criticism, positive stereotypes also appear in the modern film.
Some of them are good Latin Lover, Mexican hero.

Latino Migration Case Study
Latinos face many barriers that will also affect their process in seeking services. One of the barriers they face is due to their financial issues and
transportation. (Bauer et al. 2000; Bell and Naugle 2005; Fugate et al. 2005; Lewis et al. 2005; Strube 1988 as cited in Mookerjee, Fernandez, &
Chin, 2015). Not all Latinos have an income and are living in low income households. Also not having transportation to be able to seek those
services is also a barrier for Latinos. Although public transportation is always something they may use, if they are low income some may not even
have enough for that. They may be unemployed, and also lack insurance coverage. (Callejas et al. 2006; Bussing et al. 2003; Derose and Baker 2000;

Also, their low levels of education are another barrier they face, and they feel as if they won't understand the procedures they have to take to get
services. (Bauer et al. 2000; Bell and Naugle 2005; Fugate et al. 2005; Lewis et al. 2005; Strube 1988 as cited in Mookerjee, Fernandez, & Chin,
2015). Some cultural issues that also have to do with the barriers they face is family dignity. (Mookerjee, Fernandez, & Chin, 2015). Latinos have
dignity and do not like asking for help. They believe they can fix their own situations with no professional help needed. But it also relates to fears
they face as well. One of them is the fear of being deported, the language barrier, and worsening the situation. (Klevens 2007 as cited in Mookerjee,
Fernandez, & Chin, 2015). Fear of deportation is always a concern when Latinos have to deal with professional people or help. Although, some
Latinos are willing to seek help the language difference prevents them from actually doing it, because they may think it's a waste of time if they will
not be able to understand, and also if there isn't much availability for bilingual providers as well. (Callejas et

Essay On Latino Americans
Latino Americans: Their History, Culture, and Hardships The United States is home to more than 50 million Latino Americans, which accounts for
one–sixths of the population. Spanish is not only the second most widely spoken language in the United States, but is also the first European language
spoken in what was to become the United States. The history of Latinos in the Americas dates back to the 16th century, when many Spanish
conquistadors and priests crossed the Rio Grande in search for gold and to spread Catholicism. Fast forward to the present, the Latino population has
become an integral part of society. However, many people are not aware of the difficulties that Latinos went through to strive for their rights and
overcome discrimination. Latino Americans constitute a diverse ethnic group, which is "a category of people that are bound together by shared
common ancestry, history, and cultural tradition"(Peoples 367). They have a distinctive origin myth, "which defines and describes the origin and
collective cultural historical experiences to give it a distinct social identity" (Peoples 367). In the 18th century, many Spanish missionaries went to
America, in particular Texas and California, to establish towns, settlements, and missionaries, which are religious communities that are centerpiece in
Spanish colonial life. They hoped to colonize people and spread Catholicism. After Mexico achieved its independence from Spain, all missions were
secularized and

Puerto Rican Americans have always struggled with their identity. We have different a different culture shaping us into completely different human

question: are Puerto Ricans real Americans? The Latino Rebels is a group of social media influencers, bloggers, journalist, poets, writers, producers,
photographers, and business professional who mainly advocates for issue in Latin America. On February 11, 2015 a Puerto Rican island resident won
the $564 million jackpot, set to share with the North Carolina and Texas winners. Latino Rebels published some negative tweets of main land
American citizens who believe the winner shouldn't deserve the money because he's not an "American". The tweets read: "One of the #powerball
winners was in Puerto Rico? I'm no xenophobe, but that's some bull shit", "WTF .... since when could you win a Powerball jackpot in Puerto Rico?

Latino Literature Essay
U.S. Latino literature is as important and historical as any other. We often refer and quote recent or current Hispanic authors but we forget that there
is a whole timeline behind every word and idea. History itself was first of all recorded in people's minds and hearts and through oral tradition was it
passed on, later marked through drawings and symbols and finally, and after thousands of years, reached formal written ground. This carriage of
messages and form of expression evolved through time and the way it is delivered along with the language in it has too. We can see evidence of that in

As mentioned earlier, the first literature relating to Latin America where from an outside view and opinion. Now with the Chicano literature of the
1970s and '80s we get a more direct perspective from Latinos themselves. Of course many centuries have passed since the early writings but now
works are more sophisticated and adapted to fit the needs of expression and ideas. One of the great more modern writers is TomГЎs Rivera, known
famously for writing "...And the Earth Did Not Devour Him" which is also seen in film. In his work we can see various 'chapters' or stories that even
though they are short in length they carry a heavy message towards the reader. In this message he presents the hard life of many Chicanos and downs
of everyday living for migrant Hispanic workers. In his book there is not a short citation that would fully explain the deplorable situation and
circumstances that occur in the lives of the people.
There are some short narrations like the one in page one hundred and nineteen that cause a emotion of sympathy and acceptance and displays the ever
present desire, noticeable in many Hispanic literary works of this time, to become part of something grand. We can see that this desire is very evident,
followed by the passion of living and working hard to achieve hopes and dreams. These examples of literature are a huge step in Latino improvement,
evolution and fight for freedom. TomГЎs Rivera also made huge contributions with his life

Latino Culture Essay
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Latino population is composed of people of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central America, or
other Spanish cultures or origins (Grieco and Cassidy, 2001). As of 2010, there were over 50 million Latinos in the U.S. (Ennis, Rio–Vargas and
Albert, 2011). This makes Latinos the largest minority group in the nation. Collectively, this group is now referred to as either Latino or Hispanic. The
largest segment of this population is Mexican Americans, but they became Mexican Americans without ever crossing a border. Many Mexicans became
Mexican Americans with the conclusion of the Mexican–American War in 1848 when the U.S. annexed Texas andMexico ceded California and most of
Arizona and New Mexico to the U.S. The U.S. granted citizenship to about 75,000 Mexicans who remained on annexed land (Schaefer, 2004), and
with the open border between Mexico and the United States there has been large–scale movement between the two countries for 100 years. And it
wasn't until 1965 that immigration from Mexico was restricted (Schaefer, 2004). Attempting to offer a description of the conceptualization of childhood

Essay On Being Latino
According to U.S. Census Bureau Latino comprise 17% of the American population establishing them as the largest racial minority within the nation.
As of July 2013 54 million Latino's take residence within the United States of America. The Latino population is estimated to reach 128.8 million in the
year 2060.1 Other than being a member of the largest minority population, what does it mean to be Latina? Being Latino means you have a unique
relationship to the Spanish language regardless of your ability to speak it, and it links you to the unique traditions and cuisine found among all Latinos.
As a latino that means you are a part of the largest growing ethnic minority, an estimated 50% faster since 1990.2 This is primarily due to the
significant rate of immigrations as well as an elevated fertility rate among latino's. Additionally traditionally family is the most important social group
among latinos, thus family ties are very strong. It is not uncommon when a member of the family travels to another city or country for other members
of the family to join, thus comtributing to the overall population of latinos in America. Being latino means to have a closely weaved family, where
each member has a moral obligation to help family members with any problems they are going through. According to Marcia Carteret, M. Ed. in ...

Parent–child relationships are a unique element of the Hispanic family. The relationship between Hispanic parents and their children exemplifies a
dynamic union that embodies love, affection, and unity. One thing that is apparent in the Hispanic community is that family comes first when making
important decisions. In a survey conducted by State Farm Insurance, Hispanics placed a high priority on saving money for their children's college
education. Although this appears to contradict the concept of fatalism, Hispanic Americans are becoming more accustomed to American society's way
of thinking. Hispanic parents care for the well–being of their children and in particular, Hispanic mothers try their hardest to be the best caretaker for
their children because they don't want to have that guilt of not providing their children with the best. There also appears to be an upward trend in the
acceptance of working Hispanic mothers according to the Yankelovich Hispanic Monitor. "Hispanic women are being called upon to not only raise and
nurture families but also to support them in other ways. Eighty–five percent of Hispanics agree that women have as much responsibility to support a
family as men do, which implies that acceptance of working mothers is on the rise." The marketing implication here would be to market easy–to–use

The chronosystem according to the Ecological Systems theory refers to the environmental patterns, social and cultural forces that shape the life of a
person or population over a life time. Acculturation, as defined by Smith and Guerra (2006) is "the differences and changes in values and behaviors
that individuals make as they gradually adopt the cultural values of the dominant society" (283). In order to capture the complex process of
acculturation and consider all dimensions of acculturation, it is important to consider the influence of the factors that have already been explored in
this brief: individual variations, family dynamics, parental and environmental factors; in addition to acculturative stress, adaptation process and
generational status (Smokowski et al., 2014) which will be further explored. Although research has reflected inconsistent findings regarding impact of

Racism And The Latino Culture
The most prevalent lessons that my community has taught me is that silence is an enabler. I was born and raised in the Logan Square community
where several Latinos reside. Chicago is home to more than 1,782,423 Latinos, and among that population, a few hundred of those individuals call
Logan square home. I have witnessed silence imprison people of this community which has allowed injustices to occur. Of the several oppressions that
occur within my community, sexism often times is ignored. Within my community the Latino culture is established, and within the Latino culture a
patriarchy is set in place; where males are superior to woman, a machismo culture dominants the power of women and domestic and sexual harassment
occur. Within my community internal sexism is experienced by many women. In my community, which consist mostly of Latina immigrants, the
silence due to fear is present. My hope is to become an ally for those Latinas that fall prey to sexism and help them with their cause by raising my
voice against this oppression.
Studying Social Justice in college has made me more aware to the sexism that occurs in my community. In the latest neighborhood chisme (gossip) or

States. The Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) indicated that poverty is uppermost with children making up 21.6% living below the poverty
line in comparison to young adults (19.0%) and elders (18.1%). The California Poverty Measure (CPM) by PPIC analysis concluded that 7.5 millions
of Californians lacked resources and made an income of about $30,000 a year. That is just above the poverty line which is to earn $24,000 a year.
Although Latinos are constantly operational in the work field, they have a higher scarcity rate than any other ethnic group due to their association with

Male Latinos in the Media
Male Latinos in the Media
Introduction
What is the image of the male Latino American in the media today in television, in the movies, and in other media? Is the male Latino represented
fairly in American media? And if he is often presented as a stereotype, why is he portrayed in stereotypical situations? The answers to those questions
come from a number of sources that will be presented in this paper.
The Literature
Author Scott L. Baugh has examined the role of Latino Americans in the movies, and he explains that there "...remains the uneven balance of power
among characters," in particular with reference to Latino "subordinate characters" that tend to be portrayed as "stereotypes" (Baugh, 2012, p. 259).
Early films (in the late 19th century and early 20th century) depicted a very "simple hierarchy," in which the heroes and main characters were white
and held positions of "leadership and agency" (Baugh, 259). Latino characters were "secondary" to those main white characters, and Latino characters
tended to be the villains, Baugh explained.
In those early portrayals, the "privileged non–Latina woman" was often "lured into the sensual exoticism of a caddish Latino philanderer," Baugh
continues (259). More recently, the author suggests, filmmakers have attempted to present Latino identities as less stereotypical characters. There are
characters that would not likely be revered by the greater Latino community in the United States, but nonetheless Baugh believes

The Importance Of The Latino Community
As of 2014, the Latino community has become the largest minority group in the United States, making up around 17% (roughly 55 Million) of the
population alone (CNN News). However, due to the lack of news and media coverage that Hispanics/Latinos receive, people are uninformed about the
community. The small portion of the media that does talk about the Latino community often has false information that tends to leave a negative
impression of Latinos. By informing Americans about Latinos, they will get an idea of what 17% of the county is actually made of. Even though some
people believe that there is enough media coverage in the Latino community, there should be more positive media coverage for the Latino community.
Americans need to know about what is actually happening in the Latino community, because Latinos are the largest minority group in the U.S, Latinos
have a strong work ethic, and the Latino community has made a major impact of the American culture. Americans should know more about the Latino
community because Latinos/Hispanics have made a massive impact to American History. Since the 1500's Spanish speakers ruled over the majority of
what today is known as the Southwest and West Coast of theUnited States. Juan Ponce de Leon was the first Spanish Explorer who led the first
European expedition to Florida in 1513. De Leon was initially looking for gold in Puerto Rico to take back to Spain, and initially thought that Florida

consequence, filming is a very important business, and Hollywood is the mecca of the industry. Then, we could expect that the significance of their

Latino Immigrant Families

  • 1. Latino Immigrant Families Service Needs among Latino Immigrant Families: Implications for Social Work Practice This article is about a Social Worker advocating for undocumented Latino families here in the United States. The article addresses the needs for undocumented Latino immigrants as they attempt to settle in America. These needs include mental health, physical health care, education, information and support services, and community effort. It talks about the economic crisis that has left the Latinos with higher unemployment rates. In certain parts of the country, it is mandatory to have documents proving their legal residency in the U.S before receiving health care services. The strengths of this article is that the author uses information from a survey that was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Undocumented Latino Immigrants The Itching Palm "Everywhere immigrants have enriched and strengthened the fabric of American life," (John F. Kennedy). Latino immigrants are some of the most unappreciated members of the US population, yet they constantly keep the United States alive, and thriving. They frequently get taken advantage of by big corporations, denied their rights, and are never taken seriously by law enforcement, all because of their limited English and their lack of familiarity with the United States workplace. One such company that carries out such devious tactics is a company by the name of, Taylor Farms. Undocumented Latino immigrants at Taylor Farms need a voice, because it is a moral obligation to expose and eradicate this form of modern slavery. Impoverished ... "While a myriad of laws exist at the state and federal level to protect undocumented workers from exploitation, discrimination and abuse, enforcement is often lax and many in the legal community have turned a blind eye, or worse, have watched undisturbed while their clients commit crimes against humanity" (Lazar). The problem does not reside in the lack of laws that protect undocumented workers, but the lack of willingness from the government to enforce these policies in the everyday workplace. "The current movement of non–profit worker centers across the country–empowering immigrant workers to defend their employment rights and recover their dignity in the workplace–is a vital sign of progress. But it must be complemented with a real commitment from the public and private sector to protect the rights of all workers" (Workplace Fairness). Workers from the Tracy, California factory decided to take things in their own hands, they organized multiple protests against Taylor Farms, they set up a Teamsters accounts, and have also created an Appeal for Justice to inform the CEO of Taylor Farms, Bruce Church Taylor, of the unjust conditions that the workers suffer ... • 3. Essay On Latino Patients Latino Patients Demographics The ethnic terms Latino or Hispanics refer to a diverse population of Latin American descent that includes many nationalities and races. Latino refers to a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race. Latinos comprised nearly 16 percent of the US population in 2009, making them the largest minority group. By 2050, it is projected that they will comprise up to 30 percent of the US. The three largest subgroups include Mexican Americans, (about 65 percent), mostly settled in the Southwest, Puerto Rican, (9.1 percent) in the urban Northeast, and Cuban Americans (3.5 percent) in Florida. About 23 percent of Latinos in the US live in poverty. Language barrier is a significant obstacle to obtaining healthcare. Many hospitals lack trained interpreters and rely on interpretation by bilingual staff or even the children of patients. Another barrier is the inability to afford health insurance. Nearly one–third of Latinos (30.7 percent) lack coverage. Another barrier stems from cultural... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These include kindness, friendliness and respect. Kindness can be achieved by asking about the patient and his or her family. People stand closer to each other in most Latino cultures. Physical proximity is perceived as being more personable. Respect implies attentive concern for the patient and respect for his or her personhood and age, especially if the patient is older. Older patients should be addressed as senor or senora rather by first names. Elders have a prestigious status in the Hispanic family because of their experience. Family members look to them for support, comfort and advice. They may recommend safe, simple home remedies. In the traditional home, the man is the head of the family and makes all major decisions. • 4. Latino Childhood Obesity South Carolina has one of the highest rates of obesity in the nation and, proportionately, more Latino children aged 2–5 years are obese compared to black and white children in the state (Torres, Meetze, & Smithwick–Leone, 2013). In fact, the proportion of obesity among South Carolina Latino children between the ages of 2 and 5 years in 2009 was 37.3% compared to 27.3% and 26.4% for black and white children, respectively (Torres, Meetze, & Smithwick–Leone, 2013). Moreover, in 2011, about half of all middle–school children were not active, and approximately 30% of high school students were considered overweight or obese (Torres, Meetze, & Smithwick–Leone, 2013). These high numbers of overweight and obese children are startling because overweight... The CDC Youth Media Campaign Longitudinal Survey (YMCLS) reported that 61.5% of Latino children aged 9 –13 years did not participate in organized physical activity during non–school hours (Torres, Meetze, & Smithwick–Leone, 2013). Latino and black parents were more likely than white parents to perceive transportation, opportunities in their area, and cost as major barriers to physical activity participation by their children (Torres, Meetze, & Smithwick–Leone, 2013). In addition, Latino parents were more apt to be concerned about neighborhood safety (41.2%) as opposed to white (8.5%) and black (13.3%) parents (Torres, Meetze, & Smithwick–Leone, 2013). They reported more concern for their daughters (17.6%) than for their sons (14.6%) (Torres, Meetze, & Smithwick–Leone, 2013). • 5. Latino Culture, Culture And Culture In The Latino Community The Latino community is not just a group of people with the same heritage, but a family who works together to give others a better life and success. Being a Latina in such a world where minorities do not have as many opportunities as the privileged majority is very difficult. Especially in these times where minorities aren't able to have a say in their government and are attacked for their heritage. However, standing together as a community against oppression can be just as powerful as a united whole. It is our responsibility to bring a voice to the people of our community and join together. Making friends in the Latino(a) community is the best part. Helping each other with problems within our understanding about the minority issues we all face as a whole and individually is emotionally and physically draining. It is great to know others feel the same way you do and want to make just as much as a difference, in representing ourselves with pride as the latino(a) community. Many of us gathered to form a class in our school designed to educate about the culture, history, and origins of the Mexican–American, Latino(a), hispanic, Mexican, chicano(a), and however other minorities identify themselves as. Many have joined hoping to learn about the civilizations, societies, traditions, cultures, and heritage this course has to offer to enlighten their minds of the Latino(a) community. "Hispanic people are poor" When in fact most Hispanics are well off. Yet repeatedly I have heard that stereotype in movies, songs, shows, and school. I have been through this many times as I have lived up through 19 years of existence. Its something that I have gotten accustomed too. I enter a gated community, and I can feel dozens of eyes absorbing my skin. It does not phase me. • 7. Hispanics And Latinos And Hispanics There is a significant difference between Latinos and Hispanics, but they are also exceedingly closely related. It is important to remember that these terms refer to ethnicity, not race. Latinos and Hispanics are two different words that may or may not mean the same thing. Some people say Hispanics are those descending from Spain and speak Spanish. Others say it is not the same because Latinos include people from Latin American countries. Since this would include non–Spanish speaking countries it is not the same as Hispanic. So technically speaking you can be one without the other but a person can also be both. Latinos and Hispanics have a long history here in the United States of America. The term "Hispanic" is most often used by the government, which is what will be used through the rest of this document. Hispanics are the fastest growing group in the United States and their numbers will continue to increase as years go by. Mexicans are the largest subgroup of Hispanics making up 66% of the population while the other 34% includes Central and South Americans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, and other Hispanic origins. California, Texas, and Florida have the highest populations of Hispanics. In regards to health insurance, Hispanics have the highest rates of uninsured in the United States. Hispanics tend to have very close family ties. In times of trouble they turn to family members for support. They more often than not make decisions as a family and not as an individual. Family ... • 8. Reflection On Latinos Imagine all your life you been surrounded with people that have the same characteristic as you. You didn't even know that you been separated into a group in which you classify in depending where you live, the color of your skin and income level. All my life I have been surrounded with latinos, the group I belong to at school, where I live, and daily activities i do. I didn't even know my race impacted my life until I went to college and explored places out of my comfort zone. Throughout history people have been separated into a specific group based on the color of their skin and how they physically look. These groups were separated into a dominant and nondominant group, which were whites the dominant group and minorities (african americans, asians, mexicans etc...) the non dominant group, but as times passes by minorities start to rebel to have equal dominance as whites. Now we have more freedom and power in this world. I am going to share experience I had when I was growing up that impacted my life being the race I am. I grew up in a poor area in the san fernando valley next to the projects. The projects is known to be a horrible scary place because of the people who live in it mostly poor latinos. If you go in that area you would see latinos with tattoos on their body and some of them were bald. People who were not from these areas would describe them as scary people that look violent because of the way they look and stare at people. I am of afraid of the people of my kind to because I was walking outside and I witnessed someone getting stabbed by the people that represent my race. I literally ran as fast I can home because I was scared and keep in mind that I just entered high school. After what i have seen I didn't want to be like my people. The high school I went wasn't diverse at all and It was basically latinos. Most of my classmates/school friends were a bad influence on me so I try not to interact with them as much as possible because they would get into trouble and do drugs. I have seen them smoking weed outside of class and disrespect teachers by talking crap to them in spanish. This is devastating because we are representing our race in a bad way that creates stereotypes, but it all depends ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The word Latino is a geographical sense. Latinos can be from the Caribbean such as Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic or from South America. The word Hispanic may offend Latinos because it was created by the US Government to define all people who speak Spanish. The term Hispanic was originally meant to classify the people of the Iberian Peninsula or Hispania and Spanish refers to anything related to the country of Spain. Over the course of high school, I have engaged in my community in various ways. For one, I have donated my time volunteering for health–related organizations that promote good causes, such as the "Heart Walk" for the American Heart Association and the Alzheimer's Walk. • 11. Latino Music Essay I have grown up listening to Hip–Hop just as I did listening to my mother's blaring Bachata and Merengue every Sunday morning and from what I can recall, the artists I primarily listened to were black, or Eminem. The only Spanish rappers I did listen to were Reggaeton artists, meaning I did not listen to many predominately English speaking Latino rappers. This revelation of my early musical tastes begs the question as to why I was not exposed to more Latino rappers during the late nineties and early millennium. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... African–American acceptance of Latino culture stems largely from similar experiences of prejudice and shared African roots. In addition, black hip–hop has included various Latino elements, illustrating growing acceptance and integrations between both parties. Various elements present in black hip–hop include Spanglish lyrics, rumba rhythms (Morales 300–301), and the celebration and desire for a Latina woman, who shares similar physique to African–American women (Rivera 131–132). In examining Latino Hip–Hop history, an overall theme of inclusion and exclusion emerges, where Latinos are included if they provide something desirable and marketable and excluded due to their ethnicity. Because of this, the need to affirm Latin identity becomes a necessity in order to solidify the Latino presence within the genre. Latino rap takes on the Latin American experience and builds upon to tell poetic stories of pride, unity, and discrimination throughout Latino history. This theme of being proud of one's roots plays a central role in how Spanish speaking rappers may or may not conduct themselves. • 12. Latino Population In America Summary: An analysis was done on the large population of Latinos in America by The Pew Research Center of U.S. Census Bureau. Results following the test showed that the Dispersion and growth of the population has slowed since the Great Recession happened in December of 2007. The Latino population had been on a steady growth from 2000 to 2007 which was at an all time high of 4.4%, but has slowly fallen to a mere 2.4% in the following years. A major factor as to why this is happening isImmigration and birth rates in America shifting drastically. This is most likely due to Border enforcement that has been put in effect in the past years. The large Growth in population that started around 1990s was due to the fact that the people immigrating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Immigration is referred to people moving from one country to another.. While migration is people moving from one area to a different area. The whole article is discussing how the population of Latinos in America is slowly decreasing. But in recent years Border enforcement has been put into effect very largely. This caused fertility rates to drop in Hispanic Women, with the addition to the great recession happening, much of the population started to fall. Lastly, many job opportunities were not present, which further turns away immigration to America. I believe that the Latino population is absolutely vital in our society. Whether it be that its providing an enriched culture, new job opportunities, and the hard workers that are hispanics. They are a large part of what makes up our society, and especially our economy. In sum, if I had to pick a feeling towards the decline, it would definitely be a negative one. Because as I stated in this paragraph latinos are much more complex than just a ... Hispanic parenting styles are viewed as authoritative, which has been passed down from generations. Many of the beliefs from Latinos traditions come from roman catholic church. • 14. Barriers Against Latinos The question I was assigned is, "What barriers are preventing Latinos from seeking help?" In class we discussed homelessness and everyone came up with different questions. I have to compare my question with the barriers that homeless Latinos face in seeking help. The articles that I found to compare are about domestic violence, machismo, immigrants, and health issues. My first key finding is about residency. One factor that deters victims from seeking help is having an unstable residency (Reina & Lohman, 2015). Latinos have also thought that if they seek help from the justice system can lead to their deportation (Reina & Lohman, 2015). That can compare to the homelessness because they may not be here legally and they don't want to expose themselves. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although not all drugs cause violence some drugs like alcohol, methamphetamine, and crack cocaine do and can have horrible results. Some of the behavior that these drugs can cause are: domestic violence, sexual assault, homicides, and property crimes. Although horrible things do happen people still use them and crimes like these happen too much. This is a social issue because people see this as a norm. This shouldn't be a norm and people need to start realizing that. Accordingly, it all comes down to culture. It's what people create and it affects absolutely everyone but in their own way. • 16. Latino Immigrants Stereotypes Latinos are all illegal immigrants/dangerous thugs who sleep around, do drugs, and break the law, universal generalizations seen in the twenty–first century. Stereotypes have become a method of systematic suppression in America, a way to judge Latino immigrants and their children, to trap them in an endless cycle of misery and discrimination. Michael Dorris perfectly explains negative stereotypes influencing a minority in "Crazy Horse Malt Liquor". Dorris describes the stereotypical views of Native Americans, and how they have a pattern of being negative, similar to how stereotypes about Latinos tend to be negative. The people of America form opinions based on stereotypes, stereotypes about Latinos that aren't necessarily true. Stereotypes have become part of a system;Hollywood exploits them and then used as a form of judgment, which harms both the physical and mental health of both Latino immigrants and Latino citizens. I first wanted to look at how stereotypes about Latino immigrants influenced children, particularly in school systems. The article "Double Disadvantage or Signs of Resilience? The Elementary School Contexts of Children From Mexican Immigrant Families", by Robert Crosnoe, examines the effect negative stereotyping has had on children of Latino immigrants, specifically in the education system. Children of Latino immigrants represent one of the fastest growing populations in the American education system (Crosnoe). Crosnoe claims that Latino children are also ... Spanish is not only the second most widely spoken language in the United States, but is also the first European language spoken in what was to become the United States. The history of Latinos in the Americas dates back to the 16th century, when many Spanish conquistadors and priests crossed the Rio Grande in search for gold and to spread Catholicism. They have a distinctive origin myth, "which defines and describes the origin and collective cultural historical experiences to give it a distinct social identity" (Peoples 367). In the 18th century, many Spanish missionaries went to America, in particular Texas and California, to establish towns, settlements, and missionaries, which are religious communities that are centerpiece in Spanish colonial life. Is the male Latino represented fairly in American media? And if he is often presented as a stereotype, why is he portrayed in stereotypical situations? The answers to those questions come from a number of sources that will be presented in this paper. The Literature Author Scott L. Baugh has examined the role of Latino Americans in the movies, and he explains that there "...remains the uneven balance of power among characters," in particular with reference to Latino "subordinate characters" that tend to be portrayed as "stereotypes" (Baugh, 2012, p. 259). Early films (in the late 19th century and early 20th century) depicted a very "simple hierarchy," in which the heroes and main characters were white and held positions of "leadership and agency" (Baugh, 259). Latino characters were "secondary" to those main white characters, and Latino characters tended to be the villains, Baugh explained. In those early portrayals, the "privileged non–Latina woman" was often "lured into the sensual exoticism of a caddish Latino philanderer," Baugh continues (259). More recently, the author suggests, filmmakers have attempted to present Latino identities as less stereotypical characters.
