Lean: From Theory to Practice — One City’s (and Library’s) Lean Story… Abridged
Influences 2
1. INFLUENCES
kill Bill is one of our influences as it takes the postmodern element of not sticking tothe
stereotypical characterisation and having a female protagonist. In Synthacaine, we have a
female mobster gang that takes the main lead showing strong female characters that win
the battle of supplying the drugs in Brighton. This makes the typical male gangster
characters seem weak and in ore of the female character. Were still going to use feminine
characteristics which we will present through the mise-en-scene and costumes of the
character; for example red lipstick and big gold earrings. Also one of the key scenes is
when the females swap the suit case of drugs for a suit case of their designer make-up.
Giving the edge that they are still classy girly girls, but also have the power. Kill Bill will
also influence our poster and magazine cover, as you can see they have the main female
character at the iconic imagine to promote theirfilm. We are keen to do this as it gives
and edge and hopefully attract a wider audience. – women who want to see a girl rule and
of course the typical man wanted to see a powerful women who is still sexualised.

We took influence fromthe actual trailers of these films. We like how Guy
Ritchie uses fast editing to promotethe film, showing that it is a fastpaced up
beat film adding something new to the genre. We wantto take the same
approach of having lots of hyper reality throughoutthe trailer, showing freeze
frames to introduce characters. Itfits the almost serialscene of crime, which
most people aren’t exposed to. Another influence that we took fromGuy
Ritchie is to have a voice over for the trailer. It creates more of a trailer feel as
you feel like you’rebeing spoken too directly, engaging you more. Almost like
breaking the forth wall ( another postmodern technique.)
