2. Introduction
Fashion is an important part of our lives, from
wearing the latest jeans to watching beautiful
formal wear at the Oscars. So it is no surprise
that fashion is in the movies, particularly movies
about the fashion world. Those of us who are
fans of fashion understand the industry terms
and recognize the brand names in these
memorable movies.
3. They shed light on a high-paced industry that
depends on public opinion, especially buying pieces
featured in Fashion Week. In these movies, it is funny
to see actresses swoon over a pair of Louboutin
heels, much like guys high-fiving each other over an
amazing 3-point shot. There are many movies (and
documentaries) that showcase famous designers
and/or the fashion industry. Below are some great
movies to watch if you love fashion.
4. The Devil Wears Prada
This movie is based on the book of the
same title, which was written about Vogue
editor Anna Wintour. Runway editor
Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) makes her
new assistant Andy’s (Anne Hathaway) life a
nightmare. The audience gets an idea of
how a fashion magazine runs through
Miranda’s job and what assistants go
through to climb the ranks. The movie is
also about a young woman finding her way
in life, who must decide how important her
career is to her.
5. Ready to Wear
(Prêt-à-Porter)
If you want a view of what goes on
during Fashion Week, this is the movie for you.
During Fashion Week shows, we see how the
models, designers and industry executives
mingle, network and seduce one another. The
movie features an all-star cast, including Julia
Roberts, Tim Robbins and Sophia Loren. There
is a great deal of energy in the film, and it’s easy
to get drawn into it.
6. Confessions of a
Shopaholic
Based on Sophie Kinsella’s hit novel, the movie
shows the retail side of fashion along with a view
of working for a financial publication (and the
publishing industry). Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla
Fisher) is a shopaholic who must come to terms
with her addiction. She must find a way to pay
off the debt she has accrued from her high-end
shopping sprees. It is a funny movie that has a
surprising twist.
7. Mahogany
We see the side of the fashion design
student in this movie. Diana Ross (Tracy)
gives a stunning performance as a design
student who suddenly becomes a runway
model. Although Tracy’s modeling brings her
success as a designer, it’s her attitude that
may be her downfall. It’s interesting to note
that the film was directed by Berry Gordy
and produced by Motown Productions.
8. There are a lot more fashion movies to watch
that provide views of the many facets of the
fashion industry. It is fun to see what goes on
behind the scenes, even if they are fictitious.
