What – Sin City
Who – Frank Miller & Robert Rodriguez (Dimension Films)
When - 2005
Where - USA
Why – To remake Frank Miller’s graphic novels
How (How much revenue) – Domestically grossed 74,000,000 46% of which is revenue. World wide 159,000,000
Sin city is an American crime thriller film written, produced and directed by Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez and released in 2005. It is a neo-noir based on Miller's graphic novel series of the same name.
The plot of the film focuses on the Salesman (Josh Hartnett) walks onto a penthouse balcony where The Customer (Marley Shelton) looks out over Basin City. He offers her a cigarette and says that she looks like someone who is tired of running and that he will save her. The two share a kiss and he shoots her; she dies in his arms. He says he’ll never know what she was running from but that he’ll cash her check in the morning.
Noted Useful information for use on my production
Sin City was the first film of its genre in 4 years; this demonstrates a huge market gap. A large market gap in the market leads to higher demand than there is supply. Which is why it tends to be more successful statistically than more mainstream genres that gross less money per film.
Other factors that had a great positive effect on Sin city were the Visual effects. Green screen has become standard for Hollywood special effects filming; this production also incorporated High def Sony digital cameras for the live action sequences.
Sin City’s incredible gross can also be linked to its famous cast and creators. As well as Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller they were joined by one of the most successful directors in the film industry. Quentin Tarrantino. Though Miller had no real directional background he was heavily involved with showing the actors what their motivations should be and what they should bring to each scene.
Advertising was almost unnecessary when the news of the production surfaced as the Novel of 1991 had already been majorly successful bestseller. The film was to have an all star not to mention excellent cast.
Josh Hartnett as the Salesman who currently has a filmography of over 30 titles, Marley Shelton as the customer (58 titles), Alexis Bledel known for her starring role in Gilmore girls as Becky.
What – L.A Confidential
Who – James Ellroy, Curtis Hanson, Warner Bros.
When – September 19, 1997
Where – America
Why – Movie Remake of L.A Confidential Novel
How (How much revenue) 64,000,000, 126,216,940 worldwide.
L.A. Confidential is a 1997 American film based on the 1990 crime fiction novel of the same title by James Ellroy, the third in his L.A. Quartet novel cycle. Both the book and the film tell the story about a group of Los Angeles police in the 1950s, and police corruption bumping up against Hollywood celebrity. The film adaptation was produced and directed by Curtis Hanson and co-written by Hanson and Brian Helgeland.
Sergeant Edmund Exley (Pearce), the son of a legendary LAPD Inspector, is a brilliant officer in his own right, determined to outdo his father. Ed's intelligence, his education, his glasses, his insistence on following regulations, and his cold demeanour all contribute to his social isolation from other officers. He increases this resentment after volunteering to testify against other cops in an infamous police brutality case (the Bloody Christmas incident) early on, insisting on a promotion to Detective Lieutenant (which he receives) against the advice of Captain Dudley Smith (James Cromwell). The captain believed that Exley's honesty and actions, as a quot;
snitchquot;
would interfere with his ability to supervise detectives. Exley was motivated by the murder of his father by quot;
Rollo Tamasiquot;
, a sense of justice, and his personal ambition.
Critically acclaimed, the film holds a 99% rating at Rotten Tomatoes with 78 out of 79 reviews positive, as well as an aggregated rating of 90% based on 28 reviews on Metacritic. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won two, Basinger for Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Hanson and Helgeland for Best Screenplay - Adapted.
