Presentation by Enos Shumba, WWF, Zimbabwe at the Online Forum on Building climate resilient food systems based on the 10 Ag (27 October 2020). Organized jointly by the Secretariat of the Thematic Working Group (TWG) on Agriculture, Food Security and Land Use at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Biovision Foundation and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), this online forum was the second of a series that addressesed the adaptation and mitigation potential of agroecology in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

2. Agro-ecology (AE) Project
a) Reintroduction of AE in Zimbabwe’s smallholder
farming sector to:
– Sustainably increase agricultural productivity;
– Achieve food & nutrition security, & enhance
livelihoods; and
– Reduce the agricultural footprint;
b) Advocate for and promote AE using Multi-
Stakeholder Platforms
c) Build food systems into NDCs

3. Food Systems aspects & status
• Household food & nutrition insecurity
and high poverty levels.
• Low agricultural productivity and
agricultural expansion.
• Unsustainable agricultural value chains.
• Inadequate institutional and policy
support.

4. Resilience Aspects
• Focus is on AE technologies, extension,
training & policy.
• Appropriateness of technology,
extension, training and policy.
• Advocate and catalyze for AE transition -
MSP
• Facilitate transition through inter-
sectoral & inter-disciplinary approaches.

5. Food Systems & NDCs
• Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land
Uses (AFOLU) contribute 42% of GHG
emissions in Zimbabwe.
• Mitigation components of the food
system are not embraced in NDCs.
• An inventory of GHG from AFOLU
sector is under way.

6. Next Step
• Elaborate on mitigation potential, activities
and investment plans; and
• Mobilize resources for transitioning to resilient
food systems.
*The country will require considerable support
to transition to resilient food systems.
