Cereals are any type of cultivated grass where the edible parts are the grains, which are composed of the endosperm, germ, and bran. Cereal grains provide more global food energy than any other crop and are therefore staple crops. In their natural, whole form cereals provide vitamins, minerals, proteins, and carbohydrates. However, when processed by removing the bran and germ, they are mostly carbohydrates. Legumes are plants in the bean family that are grown for human consumption, livestock feed, and as green manure. Common legumes include beans, soybeans, peas, lentils, and peanuts.
