The Middle Ages saw major changes in Europe including Germanic invasions, the rise of the Carolingian Empire, and the development of feudalism. Society was divided into three strict classes - kings, nobility, and clergy - with regular people forming the lowest class. As cities declined, monastic communities and pilgrimage routes like the Camino de Santiago spread across Europe. In Spain, the main groups were the Visigoths, Muslims who conquered much of the Iberian Peninsula, and Christian peoples who established kingdoms in the north.
