The Early Modern Age began in 1492 with the discovery of America and ended with the French Revolution in 1789. Society was divided into clergy, nobles, and commoners. 2. What was the Early Modern Age?
The Early Modern Age began with the discovery of America in 1492, and
ended with the French Revolution in 1789.
Society was still divided into three groups: the clergy, nobles and
commoners. The nobles and the clergy had special privileges and the
commoners didn’t have any privileges.

3. Who were the Catholic Monarchs?
In 1469 Fernando of Aragón and Isabel of Castilla married. Later on they
became known as the Catholic Monarchs.
They united the Kingdoms of Castilla and Aragón to form one big
kingdom. They created a modern state and expanded their kingdom to
include the Canary Islands, Melilla and Navarra. They also conquered
Granada and gave money to Columbus for a voyage of discovery.

4. What was the Spanish Inquisition?
Fernando and Isabel established the Inquisition in 1478. This was an
organisation with special powers to find people who didn’t follow the official
Catholic religion.The Inquisition arrested and interrogated people. Sometimes
people were tortured and killed.

5. What happened in the Age of Discovery?
Many explorers made voyages to distant places. They discovered and
conquered new lands and peoples. These explorers were called
conquistadors.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, Spain was ruled by the Hapsburg dynasty.
Under the Hapsburgs, Spain became an enormous international empire.
The empire included lands in Europe, Asia, Africa and America. At the
beginning of the 18th century the Hapsburg dynasty ended.

Some of the Spanish artists who became famous in this period are: El Greco,
Murillo and Velázquez.
Some of the Spanish writers who became famous are:Tirso de Molina, Cervantes
and Lope de Vega.
During the period of the Hapsburg dynasty, many great Spanish artists and
writers became famous.

8. After Carlos II died in 1700, there was a war between Spain and other
European countries. As a result, a new dynasty now ruled Spain. These
kings were called the Bourbons.
The first Bourbon king was Felipe V. He centralised the government and
divided the country into provinces. In the second half of the 18th century,
Carlos III was king. He created new institutions in Spain and modernised
the cities.
