2. Mise en Scene Analysis
Use the photo to complete an analysis of the following elements of mise
en scene. All answers should be completed sentences. I am looking for
detailed, critical responses not one word answers.
The purpose of this exercise is to analyze a composition for all 15
elements of mise en scene. After this analysis students will have a deeper
understanding of how mise en scene shapes a film’s narrative.

This exercise is worth up to 5 points. Points will be deducted for answers
not clearly supported with evidence. Make sure to answer in complete
sentences.

4. 1. What is the dominant? Where is the eye drawn first in the composition,
and why? (consider, lighting, depth of field, character placement, etc.)
2. Subsidiary contrasts-where does the eye go after it takes in the dominant,
and why?
3. Shot selection: How far away is the camera for the action? (LS, MS, CU)
4. Camera angle: What is the angle of the camera? (high, low, eye level). How
does the angle of the camera impact the relationship between the
viewer and the subjects?
5. Lighting Key: Is the lighting high-key, low-key, available or a mixture?

6. 6. Lens/Stock-determine the type of lens (normal, wide angle or telephoto)
and the film stock (fast or slow)?
7. Color Values: What is the dominant color? Is there are contrasting color? Is
color used symbolically and if so, to what effect?
8. Density: is the composition spare, moderate and highly detailed? How
much information is in focus?
• 9. Composition Design-are the lines of the composition vertical, horizontal
or diagonal? Consider the lines created by the dominant and the
subsidiary.
10. Form-is the composition open (things or people cut off or left out) or
closed (everything included within the frame)?

8. 11. Framing- is the framing loose or tight? Can the characters move freely or
are they confined?
12. Depth of Field- on how many planes is image composed? Is the depth of
field deep or shallow?
13. Character Placement-what part of the framed spaced do they characters
occupy? (Consider, center of the frame, top of the frame and edge of the
frame)
14. Territorial Space-how is each character positioned full-front, quarter turn,
profile, three-quarters turn or back to the camera?
15. Character proxemics-how much space is there between the two
characters, intimate, personal, social or public? What does the distance
between the characters suggest?
