2. Uptown girls The main colour used in the poster is pink. I think this colour was used to emphasise the ‘Barbie girl’ stereotype the older women (Brittney Murphy) is meant to be. Pink and blonde in America is generally associated with the concept of spoilt young women. Pink is also the colour associated with little girls and the fact that the older women has wrapped up the child in a pink dog collar suggests that she’s trying to enforce her values on the little girl. The fact that the young girl (Dakota Fanning) is crossing her arms and rolling her eyes shows us that she’s not going to be brought in by the older women's beliefs. The fact that the young girl is dresses in a smart uniform and clutching books shows us that she’s not your average child seeming as children are generally presented as having fun. Perhaps she’s smart, loves books or doesn’t socialise well. The two appear to be motor or daughter or have that type of close relationship, maybe the pink collar is a symbol for the bond they share or are going to share.
3. Uptown girls The picture in the background is a photographic representation of a famous view of New York. This helps the audience understand why the film is called Uptown girl; because it’s a famous phrase and the characters are living uptown in New-York. The message in the poster is both verbal and visual. This is due to the fact that the poster states “They’re about to teach each other how to act there age”. This idea is shown visually due to the fact that the young girl’s facial expressions and body language is more grown up than the older women's. The older women has her arms around the girl and is hugging her in a girly and childish like manner, which is something young children are meant to be doing to parents. This tells us that the older women doesn’t act her age. I think females from the age of twelve up to women in there late 30’s would be interested in this film.
4. Uptown girls I think the pig in the poster is the object that’s meant to make us want to watch the movie. This idea is supported by the fact that the big is looking up to the young girl who is taller than it, the girl is next to the older women who is taller than her. This makes the audience look from the older women to the girl to the pig or the other way around. It’s also something that’s completely different seeming as people don’t usually have pigs as pets. The title “Uptown girls” is also the name of a famous song that was song by a famous boy band, so everyone will know it. They also used the popular New York landscape for the background, which allows audiences to familiarise with the poster. During the time that the film was being released Dakota Fanning was being focussed on and praised by the media due to her “breakthrough performance” in the 2001 film ‘I am Sam. Brittney Murphy was also a famous actress at the time. The poster humours us by saying “looking good in cinemas march 5” instead of saying the average ‘out now’ that other people say. The pig being in the poster surprises us.
