The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services rehabilitated 13 county roadways in 2017. The projects involved milling and paving surfaces, base improvements, sidewalk and curb repairs, and ADA upgrades. The roads are in the Lee, Mason, Mount Vernon, Providence, and Springfield districts. Project locations included service drives along major roads and residential streets. Before and after photos show the improved conditions of paved surfaces and infrastructure after rehabilitation.

Description:
During calendar year 2017 Maintenance and Stormwater Management Division (MSMD) staff rehabilitated
thirteen (13) County roadways. These roadways are either service drives or part of the Fairfax County Road
Maintenance and Improvement Program (FCRMIP) inventory; thus, are not part of VDOTโs maintenance
system. The service drives are along primary roads and typically in commercial districts whereas FCRMIP
roadways are typically in residential areas. The road rehabilitation projects were in the following districts:
Lee, Mason, Mount Vernon, Providence, and Springfield Districts. These projects generally included milling
and paving the road pavement and had combined length of approximately 6130 linear feet. However, some
projects required subbase improvements, concrete repairs and ADA improvements, as well as other safety
improvements that may include replacement of stop signs and pavement markings. Note, some of these
traffic safety improvements are still ongoing.

introduction to the road rehab projects at the following locations:
๏ 7614 Richmond HY (Lee): Milled and overlaid of 350-LF of pavement. This service drive serves several
businesses.
๏ 7501 Little River Turnpike (Mason): Milled and paved the surface and base courses due to the
deterioration of the pavement profile, which will assist in preventing water migration. Approximate
length of 150-LF of pavement. Replaced curb, gutter, and sidewalk segments. This service drive serves
numerous multi-family units.

๏ 7016-7042 Little River Turnpike (Mason): Milled and paved the surface and base courses due to the
deterioration of the pavement, which will assist in preventing water migration. Approximate length of 900-LF
of pavement was rehabbed. Replaced curb, gutter, and sidewalk segments as well as provided ADA
improvements. This service drive serves a shopping center.
๏ Kentia Trail (Mount Vernon): Milled and overlaid 200-LF of pavement. This FCRMIP roadway serves two homes.
๏ 8700 Richmond HY (Mount Vernon): Milled and paved the surface and base courses due to deterioration of the
roadway pavement, which will assist in preventing water migration. Approximate length of 450-LF of
pavement. Replaced curb, gutter, and sidewalk segments as well as provided ADA, safety, and curb inlet
improvements. This service drive serves a shopping center.
๏ โIโ Street (Mount Vernon): Upgraded an existing gravel roadway to a paved roadway that will allow for easier
sustainability and operations. The improved pavement length is 340-LF. Installed a short lead walkway to the
adjoining access to the local shopping center. This FCRMIP road serves as an access for a neighborhood.
๏ 8847 Richmond HY (Mount Vernon): Milled and paved the surface and base courses due to the complete
deterioration of the roadway pavement, which will assist in preventing water migration. Approximate length of
260-LF of pavement. Replaced curb, gutter, and sidewalk segments as well as provided ADA and curb inlet
repairs. This service drive serves several commercial properties.
๏ Chandler Street (Providence): Milled and overlaid 50-LF of pavement. FCRMIP roadway serves two homes.

๏ 8301 Arlington Blvd (Providence): Milled and paved the surface and base courses due to deterioration of the
roadway pavement, which will also assist in preventing water migration. Approximate length of 550-LF of
pavement. Replaced curb, gutter, and sidewalk segments as well as provided ADA improvements and storm
structure repairs. This service drive serves several commercial properties.
๏ 9300 Arlington Blvd (Providence): Milled and paved the surface and base courses due to the complete
deterioration of the roadway pavement, which will assist in preventing water migration. Approximate length of
530-LF of pavement. Replacement of curb, gutter, and sidewalk segments as well as provide ADA
improvements. This service drive serves numerous residential properties.
๏ 8800 Arlington Blvd (Providence): Milled and paved 420-LF of service drive, ADA compliance, and concrete
repairs in front of 8800 Arlington Boulevard which is the frontage of a church.
๏ 7233 Arlington Blvd (Providence): Milled and paved the surface and base courses due to deterioration of the
roadway pavement, which will assist in preventing water migration. Approximate length of 1300-LF of
pavement. Replaced curb, gutter, and sidewalk segments as well as provided ADA improvements. This service
drive serves the Graham Park Plaza.
๏ 12941 Lee Jackson Memorial HY (Springfield): Milled and paved the surface and base courses due to
deterioration of the roadway pavement, which will also assist in preventing water migration. Approximate
length of 630-LF of pavement. Replaced curb, gutter, and sidewalk segments as well as provided ADA
improvements. This service drive serves numerous residential properties.
