Psychopath And Sociopath
Sociopath and Psychopath: Their Origins and Different Types
The terms Sociopath and Psychopath has been used over and over again by numerous individuals
without knowing their correct usage. These terms are so commonly used that differentiating it from
each other and also to Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) is difficult and complicated. One way
of knowing how to use these terms accurately is to look at and examine its history and origins.
Psychopaths, as deemed by most psychology researchers, are born with underdeveloped brain parts
that are usually believed to be responsible for impulse control and emotion regulation. The
amygdala, – a roughly almond–shaped mass of gray matter inside each cerebral hemisphere,
involved with the experiencing of emotions – when impaired, give rise to the functional
impairments shown by individuals with psychopathy. It is therefore suggested that amygdala
dysfunction is one of the core neural systems implicated in the pathology of psychopathy. (Blair et
al, 1999) Philippe Pinel (1801), the founding father of modern ... Show more content on

children grown up, taking pleasures and gratifying impulses at every opportunity or temptation.
They especially enjoy and take pride in bending or breaking the rules. As teenagers, they are often
runaways. As adults, they are often geographically mobile, living in shelters, or taking advantage of
welfare systems. They are experienced shoplifters and have quite an active sex lives. They are

Sanity And Insanity
Mental illness according to Webster dictionary is "any of a broad range of medical conditions that
are marked primarily by sufficient disorganization of personality, mind, or emotions to impair
normal psychological functioning". How do you diagnose mental illness? Well therein lies the
problem. The line between mental illness and insanity and sanity is very thin. In One Flew Over the
Cuckoo's Nest, Ken Kesey depicts the complex line between insanity in a world that oppresses the
mentally ill through the use of characterization, literary devices, themes and motifs.
When R.P. McMurphy arrived at the ward, the whole floor has an immediate reaction especially the
staff in charge. Kesey utilizes characterization to allow the ward to be perceived as weak in the eyes
of the reader. When the current patients and atmosphere of the ward are compared to McMurphy's
appearance and persona, the ward looks very vulnerable and defenseless. McMurphy, described as
"talking loudr'n you'd think he needed" (Kesey 11) and [sounding big] (Kesey 11), establishes the
large presence and effect that McMurphy has and will have on the ward. In contrast to McMurphy,
the ward is described as "pee–stinkin mattresses" (Kesey 9) and mornings with "cold mush" (Kesey
9). The two opposing descriptions allows establishment of authority of McMurphy over the other
patients before he even actually meets them. Also in contrast with McMurphy, the Nurse's
description, while still powerful and strong, is more power

Sanity Of Hamlet
It is obvious to come across the reality of Hamlet being the most trouble character. He undergoes a
lot of pain from others but more like, himself. Dealing with the troubles of being completely insane
blows situations out of proportion. It comes to his own senses of questioning if he really is happier
dead or alive. In the article "The Sanity of Hamlet", it describes how doctors further investigate the
actions of Hamlet. Furthermore, they seem to realize that Hamlet feels very trapped in his own body.
The struggles he had to go through completely changed him. Although, Hamlet is still very
courageous and independent. He begins to think about death in a near positive way. He feels that it
is a way to escape from the cruel world and harsh reality. While still mourning about the death of his
father, his eyes open to see the real answer; not to commit suicide. Hamlet comes to the conclusions

At times he would just get out of control. He would not be aware of what he is doing sometimes,
which would make him feel like he's become insane. People would try to help Hamlet out
sometimes, and advise him to seek help but he always denied the fact that he'd become mad. He
didn't want to trust anyone except himself. Hamlet just wanted answers that, sadly could not be
answered. He was trapped in his own mind, trying to further fix all the mistakes. Following that,
Hamlet had major trust issues, when he had discovered the death of his father. No one would seem
to give him the answers or yet along any clues to help him figure out who killed father. People did
not want to associate with Hamlet because of his actions, but that didn't affect him in anyway.
Hamlet knew that he had to go through this on his own to solve the problem. No one else gave him
the answers that needed to be revealed. No matter what, Hamlet knew one thing for sure; his father

Antisocial Personality Disorder
Antisocial Personality Disorder (APD) is a disorder characterized by behaviour that is socially
undesirable such as breaking the law, lying, and not feeling any guilt. People who suffer from APD
often have certain personality traits such as being charming, manipulative, insincere and incapable
of love. Psychopathy is an extreme version of APD. In this essay, I am going to explore the question
what is "Antisocial Personality Disorder?" I also wish to understand the difference between people
who suffer from APD and people who suffer from psychopathy.
Antisocial Personality Disorder affects 1 to 4 percentage of the population. Gazzaniga et al. (2016)
outlines how APD is much more common in men than women. Also, nearly 50 percentage of
prisoners meet the requirements to be diagnosed with APD. According to the DSM–5, the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, APD cannot be diagnosed before the age of
18, but some form of antisocial behaviour must have been carried out before the age of 15. It states
that true psychopaths have more extreme behaviour than those with APD and are "pathological in
their degree of callousness" (Gazzaniga et al. 2016 p. 639). So what are the causes of APD? Slower

Myth Of Sanity
All throughout history Buddhist monks and the eastern religion have been performing meditation,
but recently others have been trying it. Meditation is a practice in which someone may train their
mind to be in a state of consciousness that benefits their mind and body. Meditation is about paying
attention, focusing and being very calm. It sharpens creativity and performance while enhancing
relationships. Meditators find when they stop taking things in life so seriously, the self–drops away.
They are more direct and absorb life easier.(Ellison 3&6). Meditation has been around for thousands
of years. In every religion, the instructions for meditating are the same, only the words differ. There
are two major types of meditation that may benefit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In that way, meditation can be good to do because meditation enhances attention, combats anxiety
and depression, and increases compassion. Because Julia already faced many traumas and wanted to
recover from them. Thurman's observation can be helpful for her. "A growing body of research
indicates that in these ways the brain lays down traumatic memories differently from the way it
records regular memories" (421). No human being thinks the same way or acts, everyone is
different, and Stout believes that people set ways to keep themselves safe. Moreover, Julia has gone
days with no memory of what she has done, and this is a trigger her brain to keep her safe from
traumatic situations in the past (430). In short, Stout believes that sometimes your brain protects you
during a trauma situation, but when the situation is no longer continuous in your life. Then you react
to the similar situation in the worst way and affects the way you live your life. When Julia thinks
about her past, she feels depressed and insecure, by which she can't focus on her present. When she
thinks about her future, then she again falls into deep thinking about those experiences or traumas
that she didn't remember. When someone asked her questions related to her past, she got confused
and gave incomplete answers because she didn't remember, and when she tried

Tralfamadore: An Escape To Sanity
Kurt Vonnegut is considered by many to be the greatest American author of the twentieth century.
He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 11, 1922 to Kurt Vonnegut, Sr. and Edith
Vonnegut. His father was a prominent architect in Indianapolis, and provided well for his three
children until the Great Depression hit in 1929. The Depression put Kurt, Sr. out of work, and
harmed his spirits in such a way that he essentially gave up on life. His wife, Edith, ultimately
resorted to alcoholism and prescription drug abuse as an escape from the troubling times the
Depression brought upon the Vonnegut household. These habits eventually resulted in her death in
1944. At age 20, Kurt, Jr. was deployed in Germany to serve during the Second World ... Show more

Time travel is Billy's way of dealing with the stress brought upon him by his traumatic wartime
experience. Billy does not have an adequate amount of time to accept his experience for what is was
before he is thrown back into the real world. Billy quickly transitions from wartime life back to
working a desk job, having a love life, a family and also learning to interact with people on a
personal level. This is psychologically exhausting to Billy, as he has "never fully left World War II"
(Vees–Gulani 177). Vonnegut makes this apparent as he cites Billy as being "simultaneously on foot
in Germany in 1944 and riding his Cadillac in 1967" (Vonnegut 58). Though Billy Pilgrim shows
many symptoms of PTSD, his diagnosis probably goes deeper than that. This diagnosis goes not
only for Billy but also, in many ways, for Vonnegut himself. Vonnegut created Pilgrim as a fictional
representation of himself. Both Pilgrim and Vonnegut were born in 1922, had fathers who hunted,
are tall; both were captured in Luxembourg during the Battle of the Bulge, were sent to Dresden,
where they stayed in Schlachthoffunf, worked in a plant that manufactured malt–syrup for pregnant
women; both survived the Dresden holocaust and helped dig up the corpses afterwards; both were
discharged in 1945, returned to college, and were married soon afterwards. (Harris NP) While

Serial Killers And The Psychopathic Personality Essay
The concept of the psychopathic personality originated in the early nineteenth century with the
research of J. C. Prichard, who formulated the notion of "moral insanity" to refer to a number of
mental deficiencies that led to violent or undesired behaviors. Prichard's findings "certain
individuals lacked the "natural feelings" of respect and responsibility and therefore lacked the ability
to restrain themselves from socially unacceptable behavior" The distinction of the psychopath from
the ordinary criminal was due to the lack of guilt and failure to have a definable reason for
committing crimes. Law Enforcement Characterization: Most serial killers can be defined as a
Caucasian male, between the ages of 18 and 32 and are usually heterosexual. A significant
characteristic among serial killers is their fascination with police and law enforcement. Serial killers
are categorized by law enforcement as 'organized' or 'disorganized.' Organized killers often appear
outwardly as socially normal and typically plan their kills in advance. They have a means of
transportation and take a murder kit with them containing tools that they need in order to commit the
crime. They go to public places to find their victims who include prostitutes, the homeless, and
teenagers, students on campuses or people in bars at night spots. Usually, their victims fit a specific
profile that has a meaning only to them and they tend to be of the same race or ethnicity as they are.

Essay Hamlet's Flaws and Sanity
William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" is a classic revenge tale. "Hamlet" is well known for the famous
soliloquy "To be, or not to be" which I find best to describe Hamlet's character. Hamlet was given
the task to avenge his father's death. As the story progress Hamlet begins to question his worthiness,
questioning his very existence. Hamlet's emotions influence his every action throughout the story.
Hamlet is not the typical hero that readers label; he has many imperfections and displays his own
manner of heroism. I will talk about Hamlet's flaws and his sanity in this essay, and with them
opinions of others as well as my own. I will also include my thoughts about the central theme and
symbols in the story.

The source of Hamlet's uncertainty is that he can't decide whether or not to kill Claudius. What
makes this hard for many people to accept as a flaw is that Hamlet comes up with acceptable
reasons to justify his delays.
Hamlet questions himself, his goal, his reason for being alive, but for every question an opportunity
to kill Claudius was exposed and he didn't take it. Hamlet, was without a doubt confused, and
probably scared, but the key question here is, was Hamlet in his right mind? Was he stable enough
to attempt such a deed as to kill his king without questioning his every thought, reason, and his
judgment of himself? Hamlet was not a person of sound mind; in fact, probably insane to the point
of a breakdown, simply because of all the events that occurred to him was right after each other.
Hamlet was not able to recover each event that he faced took an immense toll on him. His
procrastination kills not only himself, but also his mother, his girlfriend, and others, but it also
leaves the reader full of doubt. Of course it was obvious that Hamlet will kill the new king, but was
it necessary to have so many deaths due to one mans uncertainty? Hamlet was not only fighting a
battle against his father murderer, but a war within his self, blinded by insanity from reality. Hamlet
was obsessed with death and killing Claudius and this

Mass Killings And Planned Killing Sprees
Mass murders and planned killing sprees; the average person cannot grasp how any normal–thinking
human can commit such heinous acts. This illustrates the contrasting mindsets of an average person
and a psychopath, who are often guilty of these acts. Psychopathy is traditionally viewed as a
personality disorder defined by antisocial behavior, diminished empathy and remorse, and
disinhibited and impulsive behavior. Psychopathy is therefore associated with an increased risk of
crime and violence, creating a formidable challenge for the justice systems. Although psychopaths'
crimes are inexcusable and they should be punished, if society intervenes before a psychopath
reaches criminal status, we could prevent many tragedies. Psychopathy is a mental disorder that can
be diagnosed early in a person's life and, if reared in a healthy environment and taught how to
channel anger and behavior, a psychopath is capable of living a normal and peaceful life. In the
early 19th century, Philippe Pinel, a French psychiatrist, pioneered the study of today's psychopathy.
He described psychopathy as manie sans délire, insanity without symptoms of delirium or delusions.
In Fini Schulsinger's article Psychopathy: Heredity and Environment, Schulsinger discusses that
Pinel was "much astonished to observe several insane persons who never presented any lesion of
their intellect and who were dominated by a sort of instinctual rage, as if the affective abilities alone
were damaged" (Schulsinger, 190).

Antic Sanity In Hamlet
Simonsen 1
Hamlet, one of Shakespeare's most discussed and analyzed plays, presents a multitude of questions.
Hamlet's madness, once a feigned facade, becomes increasingly real throughout the trials and
tribulations Hamlet endures. In Hamlet, each one of the characters explain Hamlet's deteriorating
sanity in their own unique way. The characters attempt to explain Hamlet's "antic disposition" by
means of association, thwarted ambition, heartbreak, or denied love. In the character's clouded
thoughts about the protagonist, they inadvertently reveal their own motives and desires. Hamlet, a
young intellectual, sorrowing for the death of his father naturally develops a sort of psychosis under
the influence of his mother's unseemly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The very consideration of dreams, which may come in the sleep of death, may give humanity pause.
In many instances Hamlet's curtain of mental instability appears to drop, thus exposing the true
madman shrouded in a whirlwind of lies and deceit. For example, after Hamlet passes through the
arras and slaughters Polonius he says, "How now! a rat? Dead for a ducat, dead!"
(3.4, 25). Hamlet's insanity appears real when he mistakenly kills Polonius instead of Claudius, and
shows no signs of remorse, but rather, calls him a rat. Early on in Hamlet, when the ghost is seen by
Hamlet, Horatio and Marcellus try to hold Hamlet back from advancing towards the ghost. Hamlet
states, "Still am I called. Unhand me, gentlemen––/ Heaven, I'll make a ghost of him that lets me!/ I
say, away"(1.4, 84–86). Hamlet does not even consider the possibility of any Simonsen 2
repercussions that could come of walking towards the ghost. Hamlet's rash and thoughtless behavior
in this scene can be identified as a characteristic of madness. Hamlet's madness is further evident
when he succumbs to desire over reason. One of Hamlet's greatest desires is to be with Ophelia.
When Ophelia dies, that is not

Sanity And Insanity In Hamlet
The line between sanity and insanity is a very thin line. Emotions which can range from happiness
to pain can push anyone back and forth in the line. Shakespeare shows us in the play Hamlet how
the events in Ophelia's life drive her to total insanity.
Ophelia before her father's death was a very sane girl. Even after Hamlets brutal treatment of her:
"Hamlet: You should have not believed me, for virtue cannot so inoculate our old stock but we shall
relish it. I loved you not Ophelia: I was the more deceived" (hamlet 3.1.131). Hamlet told her to
forget about him. That must have been an unbearable pain, the love of your life to tell you to forget
about him god knows how painful that must have truly felt for her. She did not burst into tears or ...

"You must sing...his masters daughter" (Hamlet 4.5.152). This response was because of her father's
death and the relationship termination with hamlet truly pushed her to the other side of the line. She
was just singing throughout the act. Her speeches where not connected what so ever, "There's
rosemary, that's for thoughts". We could make the argument that anyone can sing but she did kill
herself in the end of the play.
According to physiology today the six reason people try to commit suicide are: "depression,
psychotic, impulsiveness, crying out for help, they have a philosophical desire to die, they've made a
mistake". Ophelia was going through a depression because she had just lost the love of her life and
her father. She did eventually kill herself because she did not want to continue living.
These circumstances are painful for anyone. "So she not only loses one loved one, in the emotional
and physical detachment from Hamlet, but two loved ones, through the death of her own flesh. "
(Aaron Greene). What made the situation even worst was that no one was truly giving her the help
she needed, the people who were close to her just did not know what to do about it. Aaron is right in
the sense that she did not lose just one loved one but two because hamlet was nowhere to be seen. If
Hamlet had been in Denmark she would have had the emotional support she needed at the

Sanity And Madness In Hamlet
One's sanity is not something you can control. Without sanity comes madness, but it is within our
minds and grows over time if not released or helped. For Hamlet he chooses to give the appearance
as if he is mad I order to find the truth about his father's death. In the beginning of his plan
everything is going good but as time goes by Hamlet is slowly losing control of his madness and his
mind begins to spin out of control. Something that started as an act of insanity or antic disposition
became more of a reality, before it ends as Hamlet's real life and tragedy for many people.
The events in the beginning of the play have the possibility to drive someone mad. Hamlet finds out

The Marvels of Madness and Sanity in Hamlet
The spectacular plays of William Shakespeare are argumentatively the most intense and mystified
plays to have ever been written. In Hamlet, William Shakespeare continually bewilders his readers
throughout the play using dishonesty within characters, confusion of Prince Hamlet's sanity, and
controversy of knowing whether the ghost in the play is either real or a product of Prince Hamlet's
conscience. Shakespeare leaves many questions unanswered including ones regarding Hamlet's
health, leaving room for readers to speculate and misinterpret his actions for those of an insane
character. However, Hamlet's soliloquies give readers insight to his inner thoughts, thus proving that
his actions are not out ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, his monologues are the only strong supporting supplements that give readers additional
updated insight on his sanity. In Samuel Johnson's article "Hamlet's Variety", he argues that Hamlet's
pretended madness was useless in the fact that he never went through with his initial plan to execute
the king. He states "Of the feigned madness of Hamlet there appears no adequate cause, for he does
nothing which he not have done with the reputation of sanity. He plays the madman most, when he
treats Ophelia with so much rudeness, which seems to be useless and wanton cruelty." For the most
part, Hamlet's act of madness was useless, nevertheless, but it was just that: an act. His constant
introspection caused him to delay his objective. In a world where everyone acts on impulse, Hamlet
proved to be the only one to stop and think things through. In the article "Hamlet and the Art of
Grafting", Graham Bradshaw states "In the second movement tension mounts with the
postponement of a direct clash between the mighty opposites; we see Hamlet and Claudius circling
each other, intriguing, maneuvering for advantage." With both Claudius and Hamlet seeking the
death of each other, Hamlet does so at a leisurely pace. While Hamlet continually ponders the
thought of eliminating the king, Claudius immediately attempts to put his plan into action.
Shakespeare uses the characteristics of both Claudius

and what should be understood as sane or insane. In "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins

throughout the text. But which characters are really insane and what evidence is there to prove this?

This was known to be a very effective means of treatment at the time. The narrator's condition is a
type of nervous depression that can lead to obsessive "fancies" and imaginations. From the
perspective of understanding oneself and accepting the present situation's circumstances, the main
character is indeed the sanest person in the story. At first, the protagonist talks about the house that
she and her husband were to stay at for a short while. She does not hesitate to describe what her first
impressions were on the house because she states that it was rather strange building that had a
haunted effect from looking at it. Not only this, but she also introduces her husband and physician,
John. John is described as a person with "no patience with faith, an intense horror of superstition,
and he scoffs openly at any talk of things not to be felt and seen and put down in figures" (Gilman
364). Not only is the narrator consciously observant of her circumstances, but she is able to think for
herself and formulate logical claims. For example, Gilman writes about how the narrator is
frequently seen as a schizophrenic, possessed, and absolutely insane individual whose mind only
continues to deteriorate rather than an individual who understands the situation and can
conscientiously create questions and thoughts about what she is experiencing. Greg Johnson writes,

Sanity And Insanity In Hamlet
Insanity is defined as a disordered state of the mind. Written in the Elizabethan era, the play Hamlet
by William Shakespeare takes place in Denmark and focuses on the prince of Denmark, Hamlet.
Hamlet portrays himself as insane, thereby disguising his sanity, in order to seek revenge which
results in his downfall. This is illustrated when Hamlet uses double/speak to confuse the other
characters, as well as when Shakespeare provided a contrast between sanity and insanity with
Hamlet and Ophelia, and lastly the concept of thought versus action.
Firstly, Hamlet's sanity is disguised throughout the play as Hamlet used double/speak to confuse and
trick other characters into believing that he is insane. One example of this is when Hamlet made
Horatio and Marcellus swear secrecy about the ghost. This occurred after Hamlet had spoken with
the ghost and before he goes to speak with Ophelia. "As I perchance hereafter shall think meet/To
put an antic disposition on" (I.iv.172–173) Hamlet says, as he is warning both Horatio and
Marcellus that if he acts odd or strange to not say anything. He is using language to tell them that he
will be acting strangely and not worry. Hamlet has just spoken with the ghost was frightened and
filled with anger. He was warning Horatio because he is planning on seeking revenge on Claudius
for Old King Hamlet's murder and was planning on fulfilling his desire for revenge in a wicked way.
Hamlet also demonstrates his sanity while talking to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern as they were
attempting to interrogate Hamlet about his strange behaviour saying, "I am but mad north–north–
west: when the wind is southerly I know a hawk from handsaw" (II.ii.376–377). The imagery
throughout this quote shows the hunting of birds. A hawk is a bird as well as a handsaw which is a
pun on "hernshaw" or a heron which is a type of bird. One is a bird of prey while the other is not
making one more dangerous and more valuable than the other. Hamlet is saying this as a warning to
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern that he is not easily deceived and can see through lies. This quote is
also showing that at some points he will act insane and at others completely sane. Hamlet's

Studies show that traits of a serial killer can be seen in a person at a very young age. Most warning
signs go unnoticed which is why the growth of the killer continues. A thing such as animal cruelty is
one of many clues inside the growth of a serial killers mind "They often start out their careers by
maiming, harming, and torturing small animals." "In extreme cases, they have been known to spend
hours inflicting a slow death on animals...this is a form of control that allows them the power to

Antisocial personality disorder is a disorder of the brain that cause one to disregard other people's
rights by violating them, they lack empathy and are very malicious towards others, they enjoy the
suffering of individuals whether it be an animal or human being and it usually occurs during
child/teen hood and worsens as the child ages. With this disorder comes a hatred toward society due
to lack of knowledge of the real world "Many of the children grow up shy, lonely, highly sensitive,
with feelings of being rejected, unloved and neglected by family and/or society"(Miller, 2014, p.13).
Isolation at young ages causes children to not know how to interact with others in the real world
they think that it is okay to violate personal space because they were never taught what that was.
With the isolation and feelings of oddity in the child, they begin to manifest fantasies within their
own mind (Miller, 2014, p.14). Many times the child starts out with violent sexual fantasies that
they would like to act out but do not have an execution plan so they experiment on inanimate objects
or even themselves or family members who will not tell such as younger siblings. This quickly
escalates to the things they do to strangers in society starting with smaller steps such as stalking,
peeping tom, or abduction. With such successes, they begin their reign of terror

Comparison Of Sanity In Hamlet
Beginning from the creation of Hamlet there has been debates between what exactly fiction is and
what is non–fiction. The line between the two can so easily be blurred that is sometimes hard to
decipher which side of the line the character or individual may stand on. Throughout the play
Hamlet many question whether or not Hamlet is indeed sane or insane. Sanity plays a significant
role throughout the entire piece, demonstrated through the snappy retorts that characters make–
especially Hamlet– and the development of the piece overall. Nearly every character in the tragedy
can be seen as insane but yet sane because majority of the time the reader can decipher a logical
reason for the statements being made. This idea causes individuals to believe that there might be a
method to the madness portrayed by individuals. Which leads us to question, if the statements made
by the individual are logical and obtain reasoning are they truly insane? Hamlets response to
Polonius "For in the sun breed maggots in a dead dog, being a good kissing carrion–Have you a
daughter" (II, ii, 153). Polonius automatically assumes that Hamlet is crazy, the first reason being
that he doesn't comprehend Hamlets statement and two being that hamlet asks if he has a daughter
of whom Hamlet already knows. It can be seen through investigation that Hamlets comment in fact
does hold truth. The sun will bread maggots in anything that is touches plays on the idea that a man

Sanity And Insanity In Hamlet
People usually hide behind a mask to conceal their true motives in life. In William Shakespeare's,
The Tragic Play of Hamlet, The Prince of Denmark, the perception of the protagonist, Hamlet, is to
be mad throughout the play but he merely putting a mask to deceive those around him. After Hamlet
meets the ghost of his father, which tells him to get revenge on Claudius, he decides to put on an act
of insanity to deceive everyone around him. However, his insanity is merely an act to hide his true
motives to kill Claudius without any suspicion, which is established when he reveals to his close
friends and family about acting mad, his bizarre behaviour around the King and his henchmen and
the fact that he has motive behind his actions.
Hamlet proves his sanity when he decides to tell some close friends and family about his plan on
feigning madness to avenge his father's death. Right after Hamlet encounters his father's ghost and is
told of murder done by Claudius, he mentions to his friend, Horatio, "How strange or odd some'er I
bear myself/ (As I perchance hereafter shall think meet/ To put an antic disposition on)," (I.v.170–
173). Hamlet tells Horatio and Marcellus not to worry if he is acting crazy, as it is part of his plan.
He devises a plan to act "mad" so one suspects or doubts him of committing acts of treason. He
trusts these two men to keep this a secret and essentially help him plot to kill Claudius. Clearly, this
shows that Hamlet is faking his madness to hide his

is fueled with vengeance to murder the killer of his father King Hamlet. Although Hamlet may be a
character whose thoughts and actions resemble a madman or someone who has lost their sanity, it's
clear he is fully sane due to him deciding to fake madness to carry out his revenge plot on killing his
Uncle Claudius, who is the current throne holder and his mother's newlywed husband. It is very
facile to see how one can be mad after losing a father and having their mother married to their uncle
shortly after, but Hamlet uses people questioning his sanity to an advantage, which demonstrates
how he still has his instinct. The most controversial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Now might I do it pat. Now he is a–praying. And now I'll do 't. And so he goes to heaven.
And so am I revenged.–That would be scanned. A villain kills my father, and, for that,
I, his sole son, do this same villain send To heaven." ( III.II.75–80)
As stated in the quote, it is clear that Hamlet still has his intuition and intellect by not killing
Claudius. It is clear to the audience that the Dane has his intellect as well as his intuition,
attributable to him carrying out his revenge plot on his father's killer. Many who have been thru
what Hamlet has been through would cope with their emotions dissimilar, but his intuition guides
him to carry out his revenge plot so he can be unequivocal that his father's killer was indeed thy
uncle.
"The spirit that I have seen May be the devil: and the devil hath powerTo assume a pleasing shape;
yea, and perhaps, Out of my weakness and my melancholy, As he is very potent with such spirits,
Abuses me to damn me. I 'll have grounds More relative than this. The play 's the thing
Wherein I 'll catch the conscience of the King." (II.II.627–634)
It is clear that the prince is very sane and well aware of what is happening due to him having the
intuition and intellect to carry out his destiny and fulfill it. As much as the King and others around
him would like him to believe Hamlet is anything but naïve, the prince is very able to adapt and
understand certain situations. When the King wanted Hamlet to go to

Sanity And The Legal Definition Of Insanity
The narrator can be seen as a religious man as he believes in heaven and hell. By this assumption, it
can be reasonably said that he believes in good and evil, and for many this is just as much part of
reality as water. Sanity and reality are equally fluid as they are defined by the accepted beliefs of the
population and can differ for many religions. To defined insanity, first the meaning of sanity must be
defined and in turn one's reality. A man's reality tells him right from wrong: this is his conscious and
when he does something he knows is bad one get a guilty conscious.Because of his guilty conscious,
which sounds like the old man's heartbeat, the narrator is not insane. In fact, the legal definition of

Without Conscience Book Report
Imagine being free of the mental chains called a conscience. One would be able to do whatever they
felt like and not feel any guilt afterwards––an unpleasant feeling I am predicting a lot of us have
experienced at some point in our lives. Theoretically, this would sound quite neat, but a conscience
is what makes people humans and without it we would not have any compassion for others, which is
what keeps the world functioning without constant anarchy. This is why people who do not have a
conscience, psychopaths, are such a threat to society; they care only for themselves and will
disregard the feelings and welfare of fellow citizens to achieve what they set out to achieve. It is a
proven fact that, much like how all squares are rectangles but ... Show more content on

According to Dr. Hare, as well as countless others who are familiar with psychopaths, "lying,
deceiving, and manipulation are natural talents for psychopaths" (46). They can fool their neighbors,
coworkers, or acquaintances into believing that they are perfectly normal citizens who function well
in society, when this is so distant from the truth. For serial killers, these traits are a key part in being
able to implement their serial killings. I do not think that Ted Bundy would have been able to
commit his murders had it not been for his acute ability to deceive women into trusting him enough
to get into a car with him. Lying is a huge part of getting their victims, or even people in general, to
trust them and serial killers and other psychopaths appear amazingly unfazed by the possibility of
being found out. When "caught in a lie or challenge with the truth, they are seldom perplexed or
embarrassed––they simply change their stories or attempt to rework the facts so they appear to be
consistent with the lie" (75). Ordinarily, by the time a future victim of a serial killer's finds a
discrepancy in what they had previously stated, it is already too late for them, but, surprisingly, this
actually works most of the time with non–homicidal psychopaths. Dr. Hare's book described many
stories of people who were victimized by psychopaths and did not

The Traits of a Serial Killer Present in James Clayton...
In the life of James Clayton Vaughn Jr. he portrayed a plethora of psychological characteristics that
correlated to the serial killer he was. One may ponder what creates a serial killer and what exactly a
serial killer is. There are many things that define a serial killer's psyche antisocialism being one of
the many. Moreover, Vaughn claimed to have certain compulsions that made him complete tasks that
he ordinarily would not do which demonstrated him to have obsessive compulsive disorder. Another
characteristic Vaughn displayed that he and his fellow serial killers shared were their psychopathic
personalities. The abundance of psychological traits present in James Clayton Vaughn Jr. has
progressively influenced the many negative deeds he has participated in throughout his lifetime.
The concept of mass murder and serial murder has been severely intertwined and the two different
concepts have become codependent. To be defined as an actual serial killer, one must: kill more than
one person at two different times, kill in geographically different areas, and the motive must not be
for monetary gain. For example, according to Wikipedia.org, "A serial killer is traditionally defined
as a person who has murdered three or more people over a period of more than a month, with down
time (a "cooling off period") between the murders. The motivation for killing is usually based on
psychological gratification." However, mass murder is an one time occurrence in which the criminal

Sanity And Insanity In Hamlet
Hamlet endures many struggles throughout the play, from the realization that his uncle murdered his
father, witnessing his mother marry his uncle and the discussions with the ghost of his father. These
claims give reason to believe that what Hamlet witnesses pushed him into insanity, but there is
stronger evidence that points to Hamlet's display of intelligence and rational thinking as the deciding
line that tips Hamlet's actions into the glass of sanity. In Shakespeare's tragedy, Hamlet, the
protagonist feigns an act of insanity in order to avenge his late father by murdering his uncle.
Hamlet displays an impressive amount of self restrain and control which makes it evident that he
still has a conscience. He is clever in that he covertly chooses how he acts around different people
and gives himself time to analyze situations and then act appropriately given the different
circumstances. John Dover Wilson notes that: "He is the epical hero fighting overwhelming odds
with his back against against the wall" (John Dover Wilson 1935). Although I agree with the idea
that Hamlet is a lone warrior fighting with his back against the wall it is important to emphasize the
concept that Hamlet's sanity makes him even more of a tragic hero. Hamlet is tasked with avenging
his father by murdering King Claudius and although he is ultimately successful it finally happens at
the very end of the tragedy. Hamlet's conscience kept him from acting impulsively and more so kept
him sane and

Hamlet's Sanity Essay
Hamlet's Sanity
Throughout Shakespeare?s play, Hamlet, the main character, young Hamlet, is faced with the
responsibility of attaining vengeance for his father?s murder. He decides to feign madness as part of
his plan to gain the opportunity to kill Claudius. As the play progresses, his depiction of a madman
becomes increasingly believable, and the characters around him react accordingly. However,
through his inner thoughts and the apparent reasons for his actions, it is clear that he is not really
mad and is simply an actor simulating insanity in order to fulfill his duty to his father.
Hamlet only claims madness because it allows him to say and perform actions he otherwise would

On the other hand, Hamlet acts perfectly sane when acting insane is unnecessary. When he talks to
Horatio about watching Claudius for signs of guilt during the play, he says ?Give him heedful note,
for I mine eyes will rivet his face, and, after, we will both our judgments join in censure of his
seeming (3.2.87).? His words to Horatio are those of a sane man. Horatio is one of the few people to
whom he does not need to prove he is ?insane,? and as such, he does not try. Also, when he is
explaining to the players how to act, he is surprisingly organized and natural sounding. For example,
he asks ?You could, for a need, study a speech of some dozen or sixteen lines, which I would set
down and insert in ?t, could you not (2.2.565)?? His question is direct and simple as all his
instructions are, and it seems that the player not only understands completely, but also is
comfortable with Hamlet and what he asks. It is much more plausible that a sane man could play an
insane one, than an insane man could play a sane one, and so reason would deem Hamlet sensible.
Additional proof that Hamlet must be sane is that even in his ?madness? he is clever in his retorts
and speech, and has a full understanding of the situations around him. He plays his madman
character almost too well, and each phrase he utters appears to be an attempt towards conveying his

Sanity: The Root Insanity What is truly considered to be sane or insane can never be absolutely
determined by any means, but Charlotte Perkins Gilman investigates, to the best of her abilities, who
and what should be understood as sane or insane. In "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins
Gilman, any reader with any ability to interpret can see that this subject matter is discussed
throughout the text. But which characters are really insane and what evidence is there to prove this?
By using the author's text and other credible outside sources, this paper will research the deep

type of nervous depression that can lead to obsessive "fancies" and imaginations. From the
perspective of understanding oneself and accepting the present situation's circumstances, the main
character is indeed the sanest person in the story. At first, the protagonist talks about the house that
she and her husband were to stay at for a short while. She does not hesitate to describe what her first
impressions were on the house because she states that it was rather strange building that had a
haunted effect from looking at it. Not only this, but she also introduces her husband and physician,
John. John is described as a person with "no patience with faith, an intense horror of superstition,
and he scoffs openly at any talk of things not to be felt and seen and put down in figures" (Gilman

herself and formulate logical claims.

Psychological Factors Of A Serial Killer Essay
Psychological Factors of a Serial Killer
Alyssa Phillips
Caledonia–Mumford High School
Abstract
Neurologically, serial killers have common brain structure abnormalities that cause them to lack
emotions as well as to think irrationally. Their family history includes unhappy relationships with
their parents who usually have beaten them or mentally/sexually abused them. This may cause them
to be unable to form healthy relationships and lack empathy and remorse. Serial killers can be
distinguished by their deceitfulness and their need to control people. Depending on if they are
organized or disorganized killer, they have certain personality characteristics. Personality disorders
such as Antisocial and Borderline Personality Disorder, as well as schizophrenia, are common
among serial killers. Since serial killers are exposed to traumatic environments, their brains change
their structure in order to respond to their experiences.

distinguish them from a next door neighbor, a family member, or a friend? By their brain structure,
personality and family history. There is a commonality among serial killers; not just physically but
mentally and neurologically! How they think, how they act, their family history. Several studies into

The Sanity Of Shakespeare 's Hamlet
Mental health is considered, by many scholars and researchers, as one of the most difficult subjects
to study. This is mainly because there's only one infallible method of evaluate someone's mental
health – observing their actions. Since there are multiple ways to interpret a person's actions, it's
only natural that there's abundance of arguments based on whether or not certain significant
characters in history were sane. For instance, scholars have evaluated and debated the sanity of
characters in Shakespeare's plays, specifically the play Hamlet, for years without end. It is apparent
that the character Hamlet, in Shakespeare's Hamlet, maintains his sanity. Few experts believe that

Hamlet constantly flaunts his superior intelligence while conversing with certain characters. Hamlet
constantly mocks and criticizes Polonius– like when he calls him a fishmonger – which is slang for
someone like a pimp – in ways that signify that Hamlet is aware of the poorly set traps that Polonius
has laid out for him. Not only does that insult serve as proof that he's cognizant of traps set for it, but
it's also Hamlet's way of shaming Polonius for using his own daughter as some type of pawn in his
plan. Mott also praises the complexity of Hamlet's intellect and his "To Be of Not to Be" soliloquy,
which is when Hamlet contemplates suicide, and claims that Hamlet must be sane if he's able to
show such a great sense of discernment and articulateness while philosophizing mortality. Hamlet,
undoubtedly, experiences some traumatic event, such as his father being murdered and the death of
his love Ophelia, that would drive the average person to insanity and, in extreme cases, suicide.
Hamlet's cautious evaluation of his circumstances also indicate his sanity. John D. Rea asserts, in
"Hamlet and the Ghost Again" from The English Journal, that Hamlet displays his sound judgement
when he evaluates his situation and devises a plan

General Zaroff In Richard Connell's The Most Dangerous Game
The term civilized, in this definition, is used to describe someone who is humane and ethical;
however, General Zaroff from Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game" is anything but
civilized. Despite his charismatic demeanor, Zaroff is an unconscientious sociopath. The main traits
of a sociopath are: high amounts of charm, manipulative behavior, very self–centered in their
actions and don't care who gets hurt to reach their goals, and lack of empathy, guilt, and remorse.
Zaroff demonstrates his charm in paragraphs 64–72 by giving Rainsford an impeccable dinner and
conversation about hunting. Rainsford even described him as "a most thoughtful and affable host, a
true cosmopolite." Zaroff's manipulative behavior also manifests itself in the conversation posterior

young man you are harbors romantic ideas about the value of human life." He also states later on "I
hunt the scum of the Earth[...] a thoroughbred horse or hound is worth more than a score of them."
This shows how little, if at all, he cares for anyone he considers inferior. The only thing Zaroff truly
cares for is his interests, no matter the hurt or damage it can cause others. When Rainford objects to
Zaroff's opinion on the "scum", Zaroff says "Precisely, that is why I use

Leper's first plan of action is to get back in touch with peers from Devon. He is desperate to

effort. He sends Gene a pleading note reading, "I HAVE ESCAPED AND NEED HELP. I AM AT

about Gene but never revealed them before, Leper is proving that the war experience made him lose
the inner peace that would have previously stopped him from saying this. Being alone for those
weeks caused Leper to change inside, and it slowly ate away at his sanity. When Leper says he
"admitted" a great deal to himself in that time, he may be referring to his weakness in keeping a
sound mind during times of change. As he was alone in a setting of greater intensity than he was
used to, Leper could not keep true to his former self, and was not able to recover even after he was
discharged. Before enlisting, Leper would never have spoken his mind as he did to Gene in his home
in Vermont, nor would he have ever yearned to such a great extent to not be alone, and be with
friends who could help him. Being put in such a burdensome position in war training, Leper's
morals were taken away from him, and he was no longer able to stand by his mental model that
peace was best, but instead he would have been prepared to commit violent acts, and engage in gory

Hamlet Sanity In Hamlet
The most famous mental patient, Hamlet's sanity has been debated for hundreds of years. As a
student, I doubt I can add to the debate, but I can look at the facts and come to my own conclusion.
Hamlet is suffering grief and despair from the beginning; his uncle's usurpation of the throne and
fathers death, and rapid wedding of his mother. You can watch his intense grief tip toeing on the line
with suicidal behavior as of Act II Sc I, where he gives his first soliloquy:
"O that this too too solid flesh would melt, Thaw, and resolve itself into a dew! Or that the
Everlasting had not fixed. His canon 'gainst self–slaughter!" Exclaimed Hamlet
Although we are supposed to suspect that "something is rotten in the state of
Denmark", as Horatio puts it, from the start of the play, it is only when Hamlet talks with the ghost
of his father in Act I Sc V that we realise the full extent of his uncle's treachery. Horatio and
Marcellus try to restrain him, Horatio saying:
"What if it tempt you toward the flood, my lord,
Or to the dreadful summit of the cliff
That beetles o'er his base into the sea,
And there assume some other horrible form,
Which might deprive your sovereignty of reason,
And draw you into madness?"
Horatio is afraid that the ghost will get Hamlet to follow him to a cliff hanging over the sea. These
words are very ironic, for as a result of seeing the ghost and hearing the dreadful truth about his
father's murder and mother's adultery Hamlet says he will put on an "antic

Sanity and Substance
America is said to be one of the most advanced countries in the world. But the people living in it are
far from advanced. Millions of Americans are not happy, they either become depressed because of
material things, become addicted to substances you receive for being crazy, or are forced to be
classified as insane or 'special'. Over the course of 12 months, Americans have a 27% chance of
having some sort of 'mental disorder' whether it is a personality disorder, eating disorder, anxiety
disorder, and/or mood disorder. That is approximately 85 million Americans suffering in one year.

Just like ADHD, all of the definitions and diagnostics of these diseases are based on a set of
behaviors. If someone wanted to be put on medication, all they would have to do is read the
behaviors in the manual and display them while at a therapist. One of the most revolting definitions
is the diagnostic explanation of Autism. Although autism is a very real disorder with very physical
problems the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders simply lists behaviors that are
actually quite common among children instead of the actual medical problem. Why is that? And
why are psychiatrists listed as medical personnel when they simply observe behaviors instead of
doing actual diagnostics. The whole system of mental disorders is rigged to accommodate what the
government thinks is best. Ritalin makes obedient children that walk around lifeless like zombies.
Antidepressants make the user feel as if they have no feelings, not even rage. If everyone in the
United States was on drugs such as these there would be hardly no crime, just a life less, feeling–
less, numb population of people that listen and behave as the government thinks that they should.
That is the reason why there are ABSOLOUTELY no scientific testing done for almost any kind of
mental disorder because the effects when used orally are pleasing to the government. What the
government hasn't quit

The Lines Between Sanity And Insanity
The lines between sanity and insanity are commonly tested in young adult literature. Shown to be
entirely based on individual perception, sanity or insanity attempt to form a reflection of the
characters' personalities. In society, as shown in the novels, people are often too quick to write off
nonconformist as crazy or insane. Girl, Interrupted and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest both
illustrate how society's stern view cause them to treat mental illness unethically and take away from
individualism. Minds may be altered through prescribed medication until they are faded husks of
what they once were, As seen in both Susanna Kaysen's Girl, Interrupted and Ken Kesey's One Flew
Over The Cuckoo's Nest, those who do not conform to society are shunned and their personalities,
the very things that make them individuals, are broken. The patients in both of these novels either
become more paranoid or drugged into a nearly unconscious state. Personalities and individualism is
lost at the hands of unethical and ineffective medications and procedures to fix the diagnoses of
itchy–handed doctors. Minds may be altered through prescribed medication until they are faded
husks of what they once were. Those who don't fall into social norms are out casted and quickly
written off as crazy or insane. They are placed into institutions in an attempt to fix them or in other
words remove them from society until they are acceptable. At the start of the novels the reader has a
fairly set opinion

The Sanity Of Hamlet
Weight, height, awkwardness or other, societal pressures and standards have people struggling with
insecurities and suppressed actions. Humans always have a flaw in themselves that they will repress.
With this, they believe it is gone forever until something traumatizing will bring it out. Stress and
shock from the event will be so intense that there is no time to consider the societal expectations.
The one common thing all humans can agree on is the need for love and recognition. In William
Shakespeare's Hamlet, the main character, Hamlet, had his father killed and his mother married to
his uncle. Hamlet's pressures from society and family and his lacking masculine figure and
appreciation lead him to insanity. Hamlet's jealousy over Claudius ... Show more content on

the change because he didn't think he was insane. In the beginning when "his hair–splitting is

thoughts and motives" (Davis 631). Davis explains that Hamlet is acting differently depending on
who he is with depending on the social structure. With friends during the beginning scene of the
Ghost, since they are not at his level he feels a barrier full of pressure with them as he needs to

statuses of people and relationship to themselves. Compared to his attitude with Ophelia, alone
Hamlet depressively says "to be or not to be: that is the question" (Act III.I 67) wondering if being

Hamlet is hiding something from the audience. Hamlet not only changes around people, but

Psychopathy
"Psychopathy is a personality disorder characterized by an inability to form human attachment,

characteristics include irresponsibility, grandiosity, cunning, deceitfulness, selective impulsivity,
sexual promiscuity, lack of empathy, etc. People who are psychopathic display not only antisocial

Due to its primary role in processing memory and emotional reactions, over the last decade and a
half psychologists have been linking the amygdala to psychopathy. It is involved in aversive
conditioning and instrumental learning and is thus involved in all the processes that, when impaired,
produce the same functional impairments displayed by psychopaths. Two famous studies conducted
by Tiihonen and Kiehl respectively have confirmed this. Tiihonen used a volumetric MRI to test and
confirm the positive correlation between low amygdaloid volume and a high degree of psychopathy
in violent criminals (measured by the Hare checklist–revised) while Kiehl used a functional MRI to
prove reduced amygdala response during an emotional memory task in individuals who scored high
on the Hare checklist–revised. However, both these studies along with numerous others were
conducted using violent offenders as subjects rather than individuals with psychopathy. Although
many psychopaths do exhibit violent tendencies, not all violent offenders are necessarily
psychopaths. A study conducted by Raine is one of the few that did focus only on individuals
exhibiting psychopathy. In his study Raine was able to show reduced prefrontal grey matter in his
test subjects. Unfortunately though, he was unable to differentiate between grey matter in different
regions of the prefrontal cortex. It is however clear that there is one region of the frontal cortex that

Sanity Vs Insanity
What is sanity? Vaguely, sanity is simply the ability to think and behave in a normal and rational
manner. Although this may be true, is there really a definition sanity that is not subjective? Luis
Marques once said, " The dim veil between sanity and insanity is perception." Time and time again
we let society determine what is logical and what is illogical, but whoever determines these things
remain nameless and faceless. In my opinion, sanity is the real insanity that most people contribute
to normality.
First, sanity is a cozy lie. Not saying everyone is completely out of their minds, and people who say
they are sane are in an abstract state of mind. I just personally believe everyone has that unique or
weird side they do not always share. The real problem is that people deem themselves "sane" to hide
their flaws. To elaborate, people tend to hide their conditions such as O.C.D, anxiety, and
depression. They do this thinking it will help them fit into a society that they are unsure will accept
them without judgment. Instead of bringing it up to receive the assistance they decide to bottle it up
until it is usually too late, and they lose their sense of soundness. This is a result of them seeking a
sense of sanity that is an inevitable failure. Not only do disorders interfere with your sanity, but by
the same token, your career could. For example, if you're in the military and you experience certain
traumatizing events, you could develop PTSD. To a lesser degree, jobs

meaningful relationships. They continuously engage in antisocial behavior, punishment does not
have an affect on their behavior, and they are emotionally immature (Hare, Psychopathy 9). They
find it hard to control their impulses and commonly hold many short–term relationships, often
engaging in promiscuous sexual behavior. ("Psychopathic"). Frequently, they fail to plan ahead,
have a low frustration acceptance, and have no problem lying blatantly to someone's face.
Psychopaths don't feel remorseful if they mistreat or hurt someone, in fact, the person's safety, as
well as their own, is disregarded in order for the psychopath to get what they want (Hare,
"Psychopath vs. Antisocial"). An easy way to describe a psychopath is a human who lives a
predatory lifestyle ("Psychopathic"). People often associate psychopaths with snakes or retiles.
Clinical observations support the idea; psychopaths have a reptilian stare they use in visual
predation (Helfgott 127). Psychopaths tend

What Is Hamlet's Sanity
The debate of whether Hamlet, from the play, Hamlet, by William Shakespeare is mad or not has
waged for centuries with great scholars such as Nietzsche and Goethe writing in–depth papers about
their analysis of Hamlet's sanity. Hamlet, like many, desire innocence and a world without
knowledge. The unnatural death of his father, the King, causes an imbalance in nature and
experience to spread. Hamlet must be the one to set things right and assume responsibly of the
kingdom and experience. This knowledge of true experience of the world causes Hamlet to descend
into madness.
The inability for Hamlet to cope with the fact that his father is dead leads Hamlet to debate suicide.
In the quote, " Oh, that this too, too sullied flesh would melt,/Thaw, ... Show more content on

The betrayal of his mother was the one that hurt him the most. "O most wicked speed, to post./With
such dexterity to incestuous sheets!" (1.2 156–157) Hamlet believed that his mother's and father's
relationship was perfect, but he sees that that was not the case because his mother remarried after
only two months. This disturbs him and he loses his trust in women. He takes out his anger of his
mother on the other woman in his life, Ophelia, his female friend. "I have heard of your paintings
too, well enough. God has given you one face and you make yourselves another. You jig and amble,
and you lisp, you nickname God's creatures and make your wantonness your ignorance." (3.1 144–
148) His words speak that all women are deceitful and contaminated with experience. Ophelia feels
the full brunt of the attack when the anger is more meant for his mother. Hamlet trusted few with his
secrets and most who know these secrets betray his confidence. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were
Hamlet's former schoolmates, and Hamlet entrusted them with the secret that he indeed was not
mad. Although they do not betray him at first, they end up agreeing to bring him to death in
England. The trust in humanity is lost by the betrayals of close friends and

Hamlet's Sanity Essay
Hamlet
In the story of Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, Hamlet's sanity is questioned because of the
relationships he had with other characters in the story. Hamlet's relationship with the other
characters did not all start off bad. Gertrude was his mother, Ophelia is the woman that he loved,
and Claudius was his stepfather. Eventually over time all of them started a conflict. Hamlet didn't
just have problems with them, he had problems with himself. The problems were internally and
externally with him and his Mother, Lover, and Stepfather.
Hamlet's sanity has made many people question him. "Hamlet certainly displays a high degree of
mania and instability throughout much of the play, but his "madness" is perhaps too purposeful and

Hamlet is understandably distraught. He may not be mad, but he likely is close to the edge of sanity
during many of the most intense moments in the play" (Sparknotes).
Gertrude appears oblivious to the fact that Claudius killed King Hamlet to take over the crown and
to have her. Her decision to marry her deceased husband's brother had a lot of people questioning
her sanity also. "The funeral baked meats Did coldly furnish forth the marriage tables" (Shakespeare
17). Gertrude had gotten married so quick after the funeral of King Hamlet that the food from the
funeral catered for the wedding. During the play that Hamlet produced to show people what
Claudius had done, she was blind to the fact that it was actually Claudius that he was talking about.
Due to Hamlet knowing the truth, Claudius has been trying to kill him.
Ophelia started acted insane when Hamlet frantically ran up to her, grabbed her arms and shook her
because he had seen the ghost of King Hamlet. "He took me by the wrist and held me hard. Then
goes he to the length of all his arm, And, with his other hand thus o'er his brow, He falls to such
perusal of my face As he would draw it. Long stayed he so. At last, a little shaking of mine arm, And
thrice his head thus waving up and down, He raised a sigh so piteous and profound As it did seem to

Psychopath And Sociopath

  • 1. Psychopath And Sociopath Sociopath and Psychopath: Their Origins and Different Types The terms Sociopath and Psychopath has been used over and over again by numerous individuals without knowing their correct usage. These terms are so commonly used that differentiating it from each other and also to Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) is difficult and complicated. One way of knowing how to use these terms accurately is to look at and examine its history and origins. Psychopaths, as deemed by most psychology researchers, are born with underdeveloped brain parts that are usually believed to be responsible for impulse control and emotion regulation. The amygdala, – a roughly almond–shaped mass of gray matter inside each cerebral hemisphere, involved with the experiencing of emotions – when impaired, give rise to the functional impairments shown by individuals with psychopathy. It is therefore suggested that amygdala dysfunction is one of the core neural systems implicated in the pathology of psychopathy. As teenagers, they are often runaways. As adults, they are often geographically mobile, living in shelters, or taking advantage of welfare systems. They are experienced shoplifters and have quite an active sex lives. They are usually of average intelligence, but don't do well in school and never seem to break out of low– paying dead–end jobs. • 5. Sanity And Insanity Mental illness according to Webster dictionary is "any of a broad range of medical conditions that are marked primarily by sufficient disorganization of personality, mind, or emotions to impair normal psychological functioning". How do you diagnose mental illness? Well therein lies the problem. The line between mental illness and insanity and sanity is very thin. In One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Ken Kesey depicts the complex line between insanity in a world that oppresses the mentally ill through the use of characterization, literary devices, themes and motifs. When R.P. McMurphy arrived at the ward, the whole floor has an immediate reaction especially the staff in charge. Kesey utilizes characterization to allow the ward to be perceived as weak in the eyes of the reader. When the current patients and atmosphere of the ward are compared to McMurphy's appearance and persona, the ward looks very vulnerable and defenseless. McMurphy, described as "talking loudr'n you'd think he needed" (Kesey 11) and [sounding big] (Kesey 11), establishes the large presence and effect that McMurphy has and will have on the ward. In contrast to McMurphy, the ward is described as "pee–stinkin mattresses" (Kesey 9) and mornings with "cold mush" (Kesey 9). The two opposing descriptions allows establishment of authority of McMurphy over the other patients before he even actually meets them. Also in contrast with McMurphy, the Nurse's description, while still powerful and strong, is more power ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dealing with the troubles of being completely insane blows situations out of proportion. It comes to his own senses of questioning if he really is happier dead or alive. In the article "The Sanity of Hamlet", it describes how doctors further investigate the actions of Hamlet. Furthermore, they seem to realize that Hamlet feels very trapped in his own body. The struggles he had to go through completely changed him. Although, Hamlet is still very courageous and independent. He begins to think about death in a near positive way. He feels that it is a way to escape from the cruel world and harsh reality. While still mourning about the death of his father, his eyes open to see the real answer; not to commit suicide. Following that, Hamlet had major trust issues, when he had discovered the death of his father. No one would seem to give him the answers or yet along any clues to help him figure out who killed father. People did not want to associate with Hamlet because of his actions, but that didn't affect him in anyway. Hamlet knew that he had to go through this on his own to solve the problem. Antisocial Personality Disorder ( Ocd ) Essay Antisocial Personality Disorder Katie McGuire University of Groningen Student number: s3229211 Mentor group number: 1636 Mentors: Joke van Dijken and Johanna Hecht Date: 25/10/2016 Antisocial Personality Disorder Antisocial Personality Disorder (APD) is a disorder characterized by behaviour that is socially undesirable such as breaking the law, lying, and not feeling any guilt. People who suffer from APD often have certain personality traits such as being charming, manipulative, insincere and incapable of love. Psychopathy is an extreme version of APD. In this essay, I am going to explore the question what is "Antisocial Personality Disorder?" I also wish to understand the difference between people who suffer from APD and people who suffer from psychopathy. Antisocial Personality Disorder affects 1 to 4 percentage of the population. Gazzaniga et al. (2016) outlines how APD is much more common in men than women. Also, nearly 50 percentage of prisoners meet the requirements to be diagnosed with APD. According to the DSM–5, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, APD cannot be diagnosed before the age of 18, but some form of antisocial behaviour must have been carried out before the age of 15. It states that true psychopaths have more extreme behaviour than those with APD and are "pathological in their degree of callousness" (Gazzaniga et al. 2016 p. 639). So what are the causes of APD? Meditation is a practice in which someone may train their mind to be in a state of consciousness that benefits their mind and body. Meditation is about paying attention, focusing and being very calm. It sharpens creativity and performance while enhancing relationships. Meditators find when they stop taking things in life so seriously, the self–drops away. They are more direct and absorb life easier.(Ellison 3&6). Meditation has been around for thousands of years. In every religion, the instructions for meditating are the same, only the words differ. In that way, meditation can be good to do because meditation enhances attention, combats anxiety and depression, and increases compassion. Because Julia already faced many traumas and wanted to recover from them. Thurman's observation can be helpful for her. "A growing body of research indicates that in these ways the brain lays down traumatic memories differently from the way it records regular memories" (421). No human being thinks the same way or acts, everyone is different, and Stout believes that people set ways to keep themselves safe. Moreover, Julia has gone days with no memory of what she has done, and this is a trigger her brain to keep her safe from traumatic situations in the past (430). In short, Stout believes that sometimes your brain protects you during a trauma situation, but when the situation is no longer continuous in your life. Then you react to the similar situation in the worst way and affects the way you live your life. When Julia thinks about her past, she feels depressed and insecure, by which she can't focus on her present. When she thinks about her future, then she again falls into deep thinking about those experiences or traumas that she didn't remember. • 21. Tralfamadore: An Escape To Sanity Kurt Vonnegut is considered by many to be the greatest American author of the twentieth century. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 11, 1922 to Kurt Vonnegut, Sr. and Edith Vonnegut. His father was a prominent architect in Indianapolis, and provided well for his three children until the Great Depression hit in 1929. The Depression put Kurt, Sr. out of work, and harmed his spirits in such a way that he essentially gave up on life. His wife, Edith, ultimately resorted to alcoholism and prescription drug abuse as an escape from the troubling times the Depression brought upon the Vonnegut household. These habits eventually resulted in her death in 1944. At age 20, Kurt, Jr. was deployed in Germany to serve during the Second World ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Time travel is Billy's way of dealing with the stress brought upon him by his traumatic wartime experience. Billy does not have an adequate amount of time to accept his experience for what is was before he is thrown back into the real world. Billy quickly transitions from wartime life back to working a desk job, having a love life, a family and also learning to interact with people on a personal level. This is psychologically exhausting to Billy, as he has "never fully left World War II" (Vees–Gulani 177). Vonnegut makes this apparent as he cites Billy as being "simultaneously on foot in Germany in 1944 and riding his Cadillac in 1967" (Vonnegut 58). Though Billy Pilgrim shows many symptoms of PTSD, his diagnosis probably goes deeper than that. This diagnosis goes not only for Billy but also, in many ways, for Vonnegut himself. Vonnegut created Pilgrim as a fictional representation of himself. Both Pilgrim and Vonnegut were born in 1922, had fathers who hunted, are tall; both were captured in Luxembourg during the Battle of the Bulge, were sent to Dresden, where they stayed in Schlachthoffunf, worked in a plant that manufactured malt–syrup for pregnant women; both survived the Dresden holocaust and helped dig up the corpses afterwards; both were discharged in 1945, returned to college, and were married soon afterwards. • 25. Serial Killers And The Psychopathic Personality Essay The concept of the psychopathic personality originated in the early nineteenth century with the research of J. C. Prichard, who formulated the notion of "moral insanity" to refer to a number of mental deficiencies that led to violent or undesired behaviors. Prichard's findings "certain individuals lacked the "natural feelings" of respect and responsibility and therefore lacked the ability to restrain themselves from socially unacceptable behavior" The distinction of the psychopath from the ordinary criminal was due to the lack of guilt and failure to have a definable reason for committing crimes. Law Enforcement Characterization: Most serial killers can be defined as a Caucasian male, between the ages of 18 and 32 and are usually heterosexual. A significant characteristic among serial killers is their fascination with police and law enforcement. Serial killers are categorized by law enforcement as 'organized' or 'disorganized.' Organized killers often appear outwardly as socially normal and typically plan their kills in advance. They have a means of transportation and take a murder kit with them containing tools that they need in order to commit the crime. They go to public places to find their victims who include prostitutes, the homeless, and teenagers, students on campuses or people in bars at night spots. Usually, their victims fit a specific profile that has a meaning only to them and they tend to be of the same race or ethnicity as they are. Disorganized serial ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Essay Hamlet's Flaws and Sanity William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" is a classic revenge tale. "Hamlet" is well known for the famous soliloquy "To be, or not to be" which I find best to describe Hamlet's character. Hamlet was given the task to avenge his father's death. As the story progress Hamlet begins to question his worthiness, questioning his very existence. Hamlet's emotions influence his every action throughout the story. Hamlet is not the typical hero that readers label; he has many imperfections and displays his own manner of heroism. I will talk about Hamlet's flaws and his sanity in this essay, and with them opinions of others as well as my own. I will also include my thoughts about the central theme and symbols in the story. Hamlet actions don't ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The source of Hamlet's uncertainty is that he can't decide whether or not to kill Claudius. What makes this hard for many people to accept as a flaw is that Hamlet comes up with acceptable reasons to justify his delays. Hamlet questions himself, his goal, his reason for being alive, but for every question an opportunity to kill Claudius was exposed and he didn't take it. Hamlet, was without a doubt confused, and probably scared, but the key question here is, was Hamlet in his right mind? Was he stable enough to attempt such a deed as to kill his king without questioning his every thought, reason, and his judgment of himself? Hamlet was not a person of sound mind; in fact, probably insane to the point of a breakdown, simply because of all the events that occurred to him was right after each other. Hamlet was not able to recover each event that he faced took an immense toll on him. His procrastination kills not only himself, but also his mother, his girlfriend, and others, but it also leaves the reader full of doubt. Of course it was obvious that Hamlet will kill the new king, but was it necessary to have so many deaths due to one mans uncertainty? Hamlet was not only fighting a battle against his father murderer, but a war within his self, blinded by insanity from reality. Hamlet was obsessed with death and killing Claudius and this ... • 33. Mass Killings And Planned Killing Sprees Mass murders and planned killing sprees; the average person cannot grasp how any normal–thinking human can commit such heinous acts. This illustrates the contrasting mindsets of an average person and a psychopath, who are often guilty of these acts. Psychopathy is traditionally viewed as a personality disorder defined by antisocial behavior, diminished empathy and remorse, and disinhibited and impulsive behavior. Psychopathy is therefore associated with an increased risk of crime and violence, creating a formidable challenge for the justice systems. Although psychopaths' crimes are inexcusable and they should be punished, if society intervenes before a psychopath reaches criminal status, we could prevent many tragedies. Psychopathy is a mental disorder that can be diagnosed early in a person's life and, if reared in a healthy environment and taught how to channel anger and behavior, a psychopath is capable of living a normal and peaceful life. In the early 19th century, Philippe Pinel, a French psychiatrist, pioneered the study of today's psychopathy. He described psychopathy as manie sans délire, insanity without symptoms of delirium or delusions. In Fini Schulsinger's article Psychopathy: Heredity and Environment, Schulsinger discusses that Pinel was "much astonished to observe several insane persons who never presented any lesion of their intellect and who were dominated by a sort of instinctual rage, as if the affective abilities alone were damaged" (Schulsinger, 190). ... • 37. Antic Sanity In Hamlet Simonsen 1 Hamlet, one of Shakespeare's most discussed and analyzed plays, presents a multitude of questions. Hamlet's madness, once a feigned facade, becomes increasingly real throughout the trials and tribulations Hamlet endures. In Hamlet, each one of the characters explain Hamlet's deteriorating sanity in their own unique way. The characters attempt to explain Hamlet's "antic disposition" by means of association, thwarted ambition, heartbreak, or denied love. In the character's clouded thoughts about the protagonist, they inadvertently reveal their own motives and desires. The very consideration of dreams, which may come in the sleep of death, may give humanity pause. In many instances Hamlet's curtain of mental instability appears to drop, thus exposing the true madman shrouded in a whirlwind of lies and deceit. For example, after Hamlet passes through the arras and slaughters Polonius he says, "How now! a rat? Dead for a ducat, dead!" (3.4, 25). Hamlet's insanity appears real when he mistakenly kills Polonius instead of Claudius, and shows no signs of remorse, but rather, calls him a rat. Early on in Hamlet, when the ghost is seen by Hamlet, Horatio and Marcellus try to hold Hamlet back from advancing towards the ghost. Hamlet states, "Still am I called. Unhand me, gentlemen––/ Heaven, I'll make a ghost of him that lets me!/ I say, away"(1.4, 84–86). Hamlet does not even consider the possibility of any Simonsen 2 repercussions that could come of walking towards the ghost. Hamlet's rash and thoughtless behavior in this scene can be identified as a characteristic of madness. Hamlet's madness is further evident when he succumbs to desire over reason. Shakespeare shows us in the play Hamlet how the events in Ophelia's life drive her to total insanity. Ophelia before her father's death was a very sane girl. Even after Hamlets brutal treatment of her: "Hamlet: You should have not believed me, for virtue cannot so inoculate our old stock but we shall relish it. I loved you not Ophelia: I was the more deceived" (hamlet 3.1.131). Hamlet told her to forget about him. This response was because of her father's death and the relationship termination with hamlet truly pushed her to the other side of the line. She was just singing throughout the act. Her speeches where not connected what so ever, "There's rosemary, that's for thoughts". We could make the argument that anyone can sing but she did kill herself in the end of the play. According to physiology today the six reason people try to commit suicide are: "depression, psychotic, impulsiveness, crying out for help, they have a philosophical desire to die, they've made a mistake". Ophelia was going through a depression because she had just lost the love of her life and her father. She did eventually kill herself because she did not want to continue living. These circumstances are painful for anyone. "So she not only loses one loved one, in the emotional and physical detachment from Hamlet, but two loved ones, through the death of her own flesh. " (Aaron Greene). What made the situation even worst was that no one was truly giving her the help she needed, the people who were close to her just did not know what to do about it. In Hamlet, William Shakespeare continually bewilders his readers throughout the play using dishonesty within characters, confusion of Prince Hamlet's sanity, and controversy of knowing whether the ghost in the play is either real or a product of Prince Hamlet's conscience. In fact, his monologues are the only strong supporting supplements that give readers additional updated insight on his sanity. In Samuel Johnson's article "Hamlet's Variety", he argues that Hamlet's pretended madness was useless in the fact that he never went through with his initial plan to execute the king. He states "Of the feigned madness of Hamlet there appears no adequate cause, for he does nothing which he not have done with the reputation of sanity. He plays the madman most, when he treats Ophelia with so much rudeness, which seems to be useless and wanton cruelty." For the most part, Hamlet's act of madness was useless, nevertheless, but it was just that: an act. His constant introspection caused him to delay his objective. In a world where everyone acts on impulse, Hamlet proved to be the only one to stop and think things through. In the article "Hamlet and the Art of Grafting", Graham Bradshaw states "In the second movement tension mounts with the postponement of a direct clash between the mighty opposites; we see Hamlet and Claudius circling each other, intriguing, maneuvering for advantage." With both Claudius and Hamlet seeking the death of each other, Hamlet does so at a leisurely pace. The narrator's condition is a type of nervous depression that can lead to obsessive "fancies" and imaginations. From the perspective of understanding oneself and accepting the present situation's circumstances, the main character is indeed the sanest person in the story. At first, the protagonist talks about the house that she and her husband were to stay at for a short while. She does not hesitate to describe what her first impressions were on the house because she states that it was rather strange building that had a haunted effect from looking at it. Not only this, but she also introduces her husband and physician, John. John is described as a person with "no patience with faith, an intense horror of superstition, and he scoffs openly at any talk of things not to be felt and seen and put down in figures" (Gilman 364). Not only is the narrator consciously observant of her circumstances, but she is able to think for herself and formulate logical claims. For example, Gilman writes about how the narrator is frequently seen as a schizophrenic, possessed, and absolutely insane individual whose mind only continues to deteriorate rather than an individual who understands the situation and can conscientiously create questions and thoughts about what she is experiencing. • 57. Sanity And Insanity In Hamlet Insanity is defined as a disordered state of the mind. Written in the Elizabethan era, the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare takes place in Denmark and focuses on the prince of Denmark, Hamlet. Hamlet portrays himself as insane, thereby disguising his sanity, in order to seek revenge which results in his downfall. This is illustrated when Hamlet uses double/speak to confuse the other characters, as well as when Shakespeare provided a contrast between sanity and insanity with Hamlet and Ophelia, and lastly the concept of thought versus action. Firstly, Hamlet's sanity is disguised throughout the play as Hamlet used double/speak to confuse and trick other characters into believing that he is insane. One example of this is when Hamlet made Horatio and Marcellus swear secrecy about the ghost. This occurred after Hamlet had spoken with the ghost and before he goes to speak with Ophelia. "As I perchance hereafter shall think meet/To put an antic disposition on" (I.iv.172–173) Hamlet says, as he is warning both Horatio and Marcellus that if he acts odd or strange to not say anything. He is using language to tell them that he will be acting strangely and not worry. Hamlet has just spoken with the ghost was frightened and filled with anger. He was warning Horatio because he is planning on seeking revenge on Claudius for Old King Hamlet's murder and was planning on fulfilling his desire for revenge in a wicked way. Hamlet also demonstrates his sanity while talking to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern as they were attempting to interrogate Hamlet about his strange behaviour saying, "I am but mad north–north– west: when the wind is southerly I know a hawk from handsaw" (II.ii.376–377). The imagery throughout this quote shows the hunting of birds. A hawk is a bird as well as a handsaw which is a pun on "hernshaw" or a heron which is a type of bird. One is a bird of prey while the other is not making one more dangerous and more valuable than the other. Hamlet is saying this as a warning to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern that he is not easily deceived and can see through lies. This quote is also showing that at some points he will act insane and at others completely sane. Hamlet's figurative language throughout the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Antisocial personality disorder is a disorder of the brain that cause one to disregard other people's rights by violating them, they lack empathy and are very malicious towards others, they enjoy the suffering of individuals whether it be an animal or human being and it usually occurs during child/teen hood and worsens as the child ages. With this disorder comes a hatred toward society due to lack of knowledge of the real world "Many of the children grow up shy, lonely, highly sensitive, with feelings of being rejected, unloved and neglected by family and/or society"(Miller, 2014, p.13). Isolation at young ages causes children to not know how to interact with others in the real world they think that it is okay to violate personal space because they were never taught what that was. With the isolation and feelings of oddity in the child, they begin to manifest fantasies within their own mind (Miller, 2014, p.14). Many times the child starts out with violent sexual fantasies that they would like to act out but do not have an execution plan so they experiment on inanimate objects or even themselves or family members who will not tell such as younger siblings. • 65. Comparison Of Sanity In Hamlet Beginning from the creation of Hamlet there has been debates between what exactly fiction is and what is non–fiction. The line between the two can so easily be blurred that is sometimes hard to decipher which side of the line the character or individual may stand on. Throughout the play Hamlet many question whether or not Hamlet is indeed sane or insane. Sanity plays a significant role throughout the entire piece, demonstrated through the snappy retorts that characters make– especially Hamlet– and the development of the piece overall. Nearly every character in the tragedy can be seen as insane but yet sane because majority of the time the reader can decipher a logical reason for the statements being made. This idea causes individuals to believe that there might be a method to the madness portrayed by individuals. Which leads us to question, if the statements made by the individual are logical and obtain reasoning are they truly insane? Hamlets response to Polonius "For in the sun breed maggots in a dead dog, being a good kissing carrion–Have you a daughter" (II, ii, 153). Polonius automatically assumes that Hamlet is crazy, the first reason being that he doesn't comprehend Hamlets statement and two being that hamlet asks if he has a daughter of whom Hamlet already knows. In William Shakespeare's, The Tragic Play of Hamlet, The Prince of Denmark, the perception of the protagonist, Hamlet, is to be mad throughout the play but he merely putting a mask to deceive those around him. After Hamlet meets the ghost of his father, which tells him to get revenge on Claudius, he decides to put on an act of insanity to deceive everyone around him. However, his insanity is merely an act to hide his true motives to kill Claudius without any suspicion, which is established when he reveals to his close friends and family about acting mad, his bizarre behaviour around the King and his henchmen and the fact that he has motive behind his actions. Hamlet proves his sanity when he decides to tell some close friends and family about his plan on feigning madness to avenge his father's death. Right after Hamlet encounters his father's ghost and is told of murder done by Claudius, he mentions to his friend, Horatio, "How strange or odd some'er I bear myself/ (As I perchance hereafter shall think meet/ To put an antic disposition on)," (I.v.170– 173). Although Hamlet may be a character whose thoughts and actions resemble a madman or someone who has lost their sanity, it's clear he is fully sane due to him deciding to fake madness to carry out his revenge plot on killing his Uncle Claudius, who is the current throne holder and his mother's newlywed husband. ( III.II.75–80) As stated in the quote, it is clear that Hamlet still has his intuition and intellect by not killing Claudius. It is clear to the audience that the Dane has his intellect as well as his intuition, attributable to him carrying out his revenge plot on his father's killer. Many who have been thru what Hamlet has been through would cope with their emotions dissimilar, but his intuition guides him to carry out his revenge plot so he can be unequivocal that his father's killer was indeed thy uncle. Theoretically, this would sound quite neat, but a conscience is what makes people humans and without it we would not have any compassion for others, which is what keeps the world functioning without constant anarchy. This is why people who do not have a conscience, psychopaths, are such a threat to society; they care only for themselves and will disregard the feelings and welfare of fellow citizens to achieve what they set out to achieve. According to Dr. Hare, as well as countless others who are familiar with psychopaths, "lying, deceiving, and manipulation are natural talents for psychopaths" (46). They can fool their neighbors, coworkers, or acquaintances into believing that they are perfectly normal citizens who function well in society, when this is so distant from the truth. For serial killers, these traits are a key part in being able to implement their serial killings. I do not think that Ted Bundy would have been able to commit his murders had it not been for his acute ability to deceive women into trusting him enough to get into a car with him. Lying is a huge part of getting their victims, or even people in general, to trust them and serial killers and other psychopaths appear amazingly unfazed by the possibility of being found out. When "caught in a lie or challenge with the truth, they are seldom perplexed or embarrassed––they simply change their stories or attempt to rework the facts so they appear to be consistent with the lie" (75). Ordinarily, by the time a future victim of a serial killer's finds a discrepancy in what they had previously stated, it is already too late for them, but, surprisingly, this actually works most of the time with non–homicidal psychopaths. • 85. The Traits of a Serial Killer Present in James Clayton... In the life of James Clayton Vaughn Jr. he portrayed a plethora of psychological characteristics that correlated to the serial killer he was. One may ponder what creates a serial killer and what exactly a serial killer is. There are many things that define a serial killer's psyche antisocialism being one of the many. Moreover, Vaughn claimed to have certain compulsions that made him complete tasks that he ordinarily would not do which demonstrated him to have obsessive compulsive disorder. Another characteristic Vaughn displayed that he and his fellow serial killers shared were their psychopathic personalities. The abundance of psychological traits present in James Clayton Vaughn Jr. has progressively influenced the many negative deeds he has participated in throughout his lifetime. The concept of mass murder and serial murder has been severely intertwined and the two different concepts have become codependent. To be defined as an actual serial killer, one must: kill more than one person at two different times, kill in geographically different areas, and the motive must not be for monetary gain. For example, according to Wikipedia.org, "A serial killer is traditionally defined as a person who has murdered three or more people over a period of more than a month, with down time (a "cooling off period") between the murders. • 89. Sanity And Insanity In Hamlet Hamlet endures many struggles throughout the play, from the realization that his uncle murdered his father, witnessing his mother marry his uncle and the discussions with the ghost of his father. These claims give reason to believe that what Hamlet witnesses pushed him into insanity, but there is stronger evidence that points to Hamlet's display of intelligence and rational thinking as the deciding line that tips Hamlet's actions into the glass of sanity. In Shakespeare's tragedy, Hamlet, the protagonist feigns an act of insanity in order to avenge his late father by murdering his uncle. Hamlet displays an impressive amount of self restrain and control which makes it evident that he still has a conscience. He is clever in that he covertly chooses how he acts around different people and gives himself time to analyze situations and then act appropriately given the different circumstances. John Dover Wilson notes that: "He is the epical hero fighting overwhelming odds with his back against against the wall" (John Dover Wilson 1935). Although I agree with the idea that Hamlet is a lone warrior fighting with his back against the wall it is important to emphasize the concept that Hamlet's sanity makes him even more of a tragic hero. As the play progresses, his depiction of a madman becomes increasingly believable, and the characters around him react accordingly. However, through his inner thoughts and the apparent reasons for his actions, it is clear that he is not really mad and is simply an actor simulating insanity in order to fulfill his duty to his father. Hamlet only claims madness because it allows him to say and perform actions he otherwise would be prohibited from, while keeping people from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the other hand, Hamlet acts perfectly sane when acting insane is unnecessary. When he talks to Horatio about watching Claudius for signs of guilt during the play, he says ?Give him heedful note, for I mine eyes will rivet his face, and, after, we will both our judgments join in censure of his seeming (3.2.87).? His words to Horatio are those of a sane man. Horatio is one of the few people to whom he does not need to prove he is ?insane,? and as such, he does not try. Also, when he is explaining to the players how to act, he is surprisingly organized and natural sounding. For example, he asks ?You could, for a need, study a speech of some dozen or sixteen lines, which I would set down and insert in ?t, could you not (2.2.565)?? His question is direct and simple as all his instructions are, and it seems that the player not only understands completely, but also is comfortable with Hamlet and what he asks. It is much more plausible that a sane man could play an insane one, than an insane man could play a sane one, and so reason would deem Hamlet sensible. Additional proof that Hamlet must be sane is that even in his ?madness? he is clever in his retorts and speech, and has a full understanding of the situations around him. He plays his madman character almost too well, and each phrase he utters appears to be an attempt towards conveying his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sanity : The Root Insanity Dennis Svistun Professor Minor ENG 113 2W6 2 October 2013 Sanity: The Root Insanity What is truly considered to be sane or insane can never be absolutely determined by any means, but Charlotte Perkins Gilman investigates, to the best of her abilities, who and what should be understood as sane or insane. In "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, any reader with any ability to interpret can see that this subject matter is discussed throughout the text. But which characters are really insane and what evidence is there to prove this? By using the author's text and other credible outside sources, this paper will research the deep realms of the minds of the characters introduced in the short story, "The Yellow Wallpaper." The narrator's condition is a type of nervous depression that can lead to obsessive "fancies" and imaginations. • 101. Psychological Factors Of A Serial Killer Essay Psychological Factors of a Serial Killer Alyssa Phillips Caledonia–Mumford High School Abstract Neurologically, serial killers have common brain structure abnormalities that cause them to lack emotions as well as to think irrationally. Their family history includes unhappy relationships with their parents who usually have beaten them or mentally/sexually abused them. This may cause them to be unable to form healthy relationships and lack empathy and remorse. Serial killers can be distinguished by their deceitfulness and their need to control people. Depending on if they are organized or disorganized killer, they have certain personality characteristics. Personality disorders such as Antisocial and Borderline Personality Disorder, as well as schizophrenia, are common among serial killers. Since serial killers are exposed to traumatic environments, their brains change their structure in order to respond to their experiences. This is mainly because there's only one infallible method of evaluate someone's mental health – observing their actions. Since there are multiple ways to interpret a person's actions, it's only natural that there's abundance of arguments based on whether or not certain significant characters in history were sane. For instance, scholars have evaluated and debated the sanity of characters in Shakespeare's plays, specifically the play Hamlet, for years without end. It is apparent that the character Hamlet, in Shakespeare's Hamlet, maintains his sanity. Few experts believe that Hamlet's insanity is clearly demonstrated by his ... Hamlet constantly mocks and criticizes Polonius– like when he calls him a fishmonger – which is slang for someone like a pimp – in ways that signify that Hamlet is aware of the poorly set traps that Polonius has laid out for him. Not only does that insult serve as proof that he's cognizant of traps set for it, but it's also Hamlet's way of shaming Polonius for using his own daughter as some type of pawn in his plan. Mott also praises the complexity of Hamlet's intellect and his "To Be of Not to Be" soliloquy, which is when Hamlet contemplates suicide, and claims that Hamlet must be sane if he's able to show such a great sense of discernment and articulateness while philosophizing mortality. Hamlet, undoubtedly, experiences some traumatic event, such as his father being murdered and the death of his love Ophelia, that would drive the average person to insanity and, in extreme cases, suicide. General Zaroff In Richard Connell's The Most Dangerous Game The term civilized, in this definition, is used to describe someone who is humane and ethical; however, General Zaroff from Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game" is anything but civilized. Despite his charismatic demeanor, Zaroff is an unconscientious sociopath. The main traits of a sociopath are: high amounts of charm, manipulative behavior, very self–centered in their actions and don't care who gets hurt to reach their goals, and lack of empathy, guilt, and remorse. Zaroff demonstrates his charm in paragraphs 64–72 by giving Rainsford an impeccable dinner and conversation about hunting. After he is discharged from basic training and returns to his home in Vermont, Leper's first plan of action is to get back in touch with peers from Devon. He is desperate to communicate with them immediately to remind himself how at–ease he was before joining the war effort. He sends Gene a pleading note reading, "I HAVE ESCAPED AND NEED HELP. Being alone for those weeks caused Leper to change inside, and it slowly ate away at his sanity. When Leper says he "admitted" a great deal to himself in that time, he may be referring to his weakness in keeping a sound mind during times of change. Before enlisting, Leper would never have spoken his mind as he did to Gene in his home in Vermont, nor would he have ever yearned to such a great extent to not be alone, and be with friends who could help him. • 117. Hamlet Sanity In Hamlet The most famous mental patient, Hamlet's sanity has been debated for hundreds of years. As a student, I doubt I can add to the debate, but I can look at the facts and come to my own conclusion. Hamlet is suffering grief and despair from the beginning; his uncle's usurpation of the throne and fathers death, and rapid wedding of his mother. You can watch his intense grief tip toeing on the line with suicidal behavior as of Act II Sc I, where he gives his first soliloquy: "O that this too too solid flesh would melt, Thaw, and resolve itself into a dew! Or that the Everlasting had not fixed. His canon 'gainst self–slaughter!" Exclaimed Hamlet Although we are supposed to suspect that "something is rotten in the state of Denmark", as Horatio puts it, from the start of the play, it is only when Hamlet talks with the ghost of his father in Act I Sc V that we realise the full extent of his uncle's treachery. Horatio and Marcellus try to restrain him, Horatio saying: "What if it tempt you toward the flood, my lord, Or to the dreadful summit of the cliff That beetles o'er his base into the sea, And there assume some other horrible form, Which might deprive your sovereignty of reason, And draw you into madness?" Horatio is afraid that the ghost will get Hamlet to follow him to a cliff hanging over the sea. These words are very ironic, for as a result of seeing the ghost and hearing the dreadful truth about his father's murder and mother's adultery Hamlet says he will put on an "antic ... Just like ADHD, all of the definitions and diagnostics of these diseases are based on a set of behaviors. If someone wanted to be put on medication, all they would have to do is read the behaviors in the manual and display them while at a therapist. One of the most revolting definitions is the diagnostic explanation of Autism. Although autism is a very real disorder with very physical problems the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders simply lists behaviors that are actually quite common among children instead of the actual medical problem. Why is that? And why are psychiatrists listed as medical personnel when they simply observe behaviors instead of doing actual diagnostics. The whole system of mental disorders is rigged to accommodate what the government thinks is best. Ritalin makes obedient children that walk around lifeless like zombies. Antidepressants make the user feel as if they have no feelings, not even rage. Shown to be entirely based on individual perception, sanity or insanity attempt to form a reflection of the characters' personalities. In society, as shown in the novels, people are often too quick to write off nonconformist as crazy or insane. Girl, Interrupted and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest both illustrate how society's stern view cause them to treat mental illness unethically and take away from individualism. Minds may be altered through prescribed medication until they are faded husks of what they once were, As seen in both Susanna Kaysen's Girl, Interrupted and Ken Kesey's One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, those who do not conform to society are shunned and their personalities, the very things that make them individuals, are broken. The patients in both of these novels either become more paranoid or drugged into a nearly unconscious state. Personalities and individualism is lost at the hands of unethical and ineffective medications and procedures to fix the diagnoses of itchy–handed doctors. Minds may be altered through prescribed medication until they are faded husks of what they once were. Those who don't fall into social norms are out casted and quickly written off as crazy or insane. Due to its primary role in processing memory and emotional reactions, over the last decade and a half psychologists have been linking the amygdala to psychopathy. It is involved in aversive conditioning and instrumental learning and is thus involved in all the processes that, when impaired, produce the same functional impairments displayed by psychopaths. Two famous studies conducted by Tiihonen and Kiehl respectively have confirmed this. Tiihonen used a volumetric MRI to test and confirm the positive correlation between low amygdaloid volume and a high degree of psychopathy in violent criminals (measured by the Hare checklist–revised) while Kiehl used a functional MRI to prove reduced amygdala response during an emotional memory task in individuals who scored high on the Hare checklist–revised. However, both these studies along with numerous others were conducted using violent offenders as subjects rather than individuals with psychopathy. Although many psychopaths do exhibit violent tendencies, not all violent offenders are necessarily psychopaths. A study conducted by Raine is one of the few that did focus only on individuals exhibiting psychopathy. In his study Raine was able to show reduced prefrontal grey matter in his test subjects. • 141. Sanity Vs Insanity What is sanity? Vaguely, sanity is simply the ability to think and behave in a normal and rational manner. Although this may be true, is there really a definition sanity that is not subjective? Luis Marques once said, " The dim veil between sanity and insanity is perception." Time and time again we let society determine what is logical and what is illogical, but whoever determines these things remain nameless and faceless. In my opinion, sanity is the real insanity that most people contribute to normality. First, sanity is a cozy lie. Not saying everyone is completely out of their minds, and people who say they are sane are in an abstract state of mind. I just personally believe everyone has that unique or weird side they do not always share. The real problem is that people deem themselves "sane" to hide their flaws. To elaborate, people tend to hide their conditions such as O.C.D, anxiety, and depression. They do this thinking it will help them fit into a society that they are unsure will accept them without judgment. Instead of bringing it up to receive the assistance they decide to bottle it up until it is usually too late, and they lose their sense of soundness. This is a result of them seeking a sense of sanity that is an inevitable failure. Not only do disorders interfere with your sanity, but by the same token, your career could. For example, if you're in the military and you experience certain traumatizing events, you could develop PTSD. To a lesser degree, jobs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They do not learn from their experiences and cannot form meaningful relationships. They continuously engage in antisocial behavior, punishment does not have an affect on their behavior, and they are emotionally immature (Hare, Psychopathy 9). They find it hard to control their impulses and commonly hold many short–term relationships, often engaging in promiscuous sexual behavior. ("Psychopathic").
