The Joneses Film Techniques
Granted a captivating lead by actress Demi Moore, and a neat narrative, The Joneses captures the
life of a more than average family that enacts the fascinating sequels that take place whilst living a
life of a con–artistry, and are they ever so convincing. With intentions to simply be desired by
members of their upscale neighborhood, the fictitious, fabricated family perform intense hoaxes in
order to promote high end products to those surrounding them. The Joneses is an alluring comedy
that offers a laugh for the entire family ;however, I believe there are secondary adjustments that
could improve the final message of the film. By using an array of climatic events, the disquieting
unknown reveals the secluded truth of a former acquaintance,

The Film Techniques Used By Cameron
Being a science fiction fan during his childhood, he worked his way in producing several highly
acclaimed science fiction movies such as Avatar, Aliens, and the Terminator. Born on August 16,
1954, in Ontario Canada and later moved to California to finish his college at California State
University. In order to pursue his dreams in cinematography, he worked as a truck driver and would
work on screenplays. Then his career began from an art director in Battle beyond the Stars (1980) to
directing various films. Now, he is an Oscar–winning director whose films Titanic (1997) and Avatar
(2009) remains the top grossing films of all time. He has won various awards from different sides of
the world, Norway, France, and the United Kingdom. Mise–en–scenes were well incorporated in
each of James Cameron's movies especially for science fiction movies that used elegantly crafted
visuals.
This paper will focus on the film techniques used by Cameron in his three most known movies,
Titanic (1997), Avatar (2009), and Terminator series. Mise–en–scene according to John Gibbs is
used in film studies in the discussion of visual style. Translated literally it means "To put on stage",
but for the purpose of students, it is defined as the contents of the frame and the way they are
organized (p 5). In addition, a director's style can be identified only through the arrangement and
orchestrations of the film's mise–en–scene (Nelmes, 425).The films Titanic, Avatar, and Terminator
series were successful

Techniques In The Film 'Reitman'
In a quirky film about a Tabasco lobbyist and his son, gives an alternative view on what many think
about the industry. As a lobbyist for tobacco, Nick Naylor is excellent at his job; he even convinced
cancer patient that he could still smoke. Even if the film is not the most visible pleasing, Reitman
still uses techniques of the film industry to give the movie more depth. In one scene from earlier in
the film, Reitman is able to use a vast variety of techniques in a fairly short sequence in order to set
the tone for the rest of the movie. By using various technique such as filmography, Mise en Scene,
movement and editing; Reitman is able to not only show the nature of the protagonist, but also his
relationship with his son.

Sunrise Film Techniques
Sunrise is a film directed by director F.W.Murnau that some might argue is more of a classic love
story but I am going to show you why this is more of a horror film instead. Sunrise had a hint of
love in it indeed but it contains plot of murder as well as attempt of murder twice. It also contains a
very controlling character that show hints of being evil or monster like in her personality as well as
her appearance. The director used the camera angle, camera movement, as well as lighting to show
why this is more of a dark and chilling story and I will explain why.
The first obvious clue to the viewers that this might be more of a horror film than a love film is the
very controlling a devil like character that we get introduced to very early ... Show more content on

We get a little bit of everything in this film such as creepy locations and camera angle that shows
darkness to a shot or characters true feeling or intention. F.W.Murnau used a variety of ways to show
the horror prospective in this film. in the beginning we see the husband meeting his lover in a dark
and creepy moon lit swamp. In an edit sequence we get a trailing shot of the husband walking
through the very dark and gloomy swap with a slouch posture and hands in his pockets, we also hear
a very slow and creepy soundtrack playing in the background giving the audiences a chilling feels to
it. Then we see that he walks out of the frame and the camera keeps going and stops on a shot of the
city woman standing near some bushes with a very bright and high moon in the background. This is
where we can draw a clear conclusion that the location is imposed on us to give a feeling of sadness
or evil sin that they are about to commit in this isolated part of the farm. He uses high angles several
time through the film as well to show the shadows of darkness on characters face and give them a
monster like appearance. We see a perfect example of this in the shot of a close up of the husband
face at a high angle and low light in the boat when he is about to stand up to kill his wife. We see the
dark shadow in his face and his slouched Frankenstein posture as he moves his eye on his wife about
to kill her. He used these cinematic techniques to show character emotions and implement the horror
prospective in the film and these are clear reasons why some might say this is more horror than a
classic love story of two

Shine and swimming upstream are two very exciting movies. Muclahy and Hicks have created two
extremely strong characters through using different camera angles, sounding, and lighting when they
are on the screen. These two directors also created two intense action scenes through using those
techniques. Even though both exciting films have different stories within them they still pose similar
themes.
Mulchay and Hicks created two very intense and exciting action themes in the movies swimming
upstream and Shine. When Tony and John were racing in the trials for the empire games, camera
angles, transitions and the type of music being played created the audience to move to the edge of
their seats. The way the camera transitioned from Tony to John ... Show more content on

In the film, Swimming Up Stream Mulcahy directed a scene where Tony and his older brother,
Harold Jnr, had a boxing match with their father watching on. Both sons wanted to impress their
father, but it was obvious that Tony was the weaker son and wasn't his father's favorite at all. In the
scene, it portrayed Tony's characteristics as him not being a fighter, being a pushover but also
wanting to impress his father. Because when his father commented, "com' on you little poofta get up
and fight, stop being a little sissy." During the fight, he got up and started to fight back until his
mother came in and broke them up. The camera angles and music that was used when Tony was the
focal point of the screen generally portrayed him as determined, but also made the audience feel his
feeling of being disowned. David also had the same kind of camera angles and music displayed
when he was the center focus, as when he told his father about leaving Australia to move to London,
to live the dream of becoming one of the best pianists in the world. As he got the invite to (need the
college) he told his father in an extremely weak voice "I wanna go and you can't stop me." After he
said that he got abused by his father, and when he was coming up the camera angles was as if the
audience was looking down to him which made him be portrayed as weak and a pushover. David
was extremely influenced by his father, extremely so that when he became disabled he would
murmur words such as "I'm a very lucky boy" continuously, he would also murmur words and
phrases that his father drilled into him since a young age. Both boys were push overs and did exactly
what their fathers told them to do, but were also strong and independent when they discovered that
they are mentally stronger than their fathers, these characters were a key point in the making of the

The Crucible Film Techniques
Another scene in the film in which Kaye has carefully used the soundtrack to convey the idea of
Derek's actions affecting Danny is the revelation scene later on in the film. During this scene, we see
Derek reflecting on the past through a flashback. A buildup of soft violin, piano and cello sounds are
used in contrast to other parts of the film to amplify the sense of happiness and to show how Derek
cherishes this memory as it is possibly the last moment where his life was good. By using a build up
of volume and pace in the soundtrack Kaye is able to make the audience understand how this is a
past memory that is happy for Derek and that the emotions he is experiencing are due to his change
of character from a violent racist into a normal person. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through his directing Kaye shows the viewer the link between Danny and Derek, highlighting the
issue of racial traits being passed down through modern American families and warning the
audience about the future. His use of camerawork and soundtrack in uncommon ways compared to
how other films of this genre make this film stand out and provide a more visceral and realistic
sense of how racism affects many Americans' in modern times. Kaye's use of close–ups provide the
raw and gut wrenching emotions in every scene, be it the stomach turning sense of teeth touching
the curb or to highlight the emotion on a character's face. His use of soundtrack further enhances
every scene seamlessly building tension and then bringing it all crashing down in a high pitched
threnody. Through studying this film it is clear to see that Tony Kaye's masterful use of camerawork
and soundtrack in these two scenes successfully pushes the message of the film home, which is that
even though we may not be able to see it, racist traits are still passed down through families in
today's world. Although the entire film helps to further push that point it is these two scenes that
show to the viewer that even a simple racist statement from a parent or sibling can be enough to
affect a child for the rest of their life and to further spread racism and intolerance into the

Scarface Film Techniques
The AFI movie I chose for a week 3 assignment is Scarface, this 1983 cinematic masterpiece,
starring Al Pacino, shows the journey of a simple immigrant from Cuba trying to make his way to
America, trying to find the American dream, after the character Tony Montana play by Al Pacino
tries to enter into United States illegally, he was caught and placed into a immigration detention
center, this is where Tony Montana gets his big break by taking on a contract hit for a Colombian
drug cartel that can help him with his immigration status. The theme of this movie Scarface is a fast
rise and fall of a poor immigrant from Cuba, with goals and aspirations to become a drug kingpin.
Each scene becomes progressively understanding and clear that Tony Montana goal is to become a
boss, by setting into motion plans to make his way into South Florida by any means necessary,
Montana at this time has taken on hit man jobs and started paddling narcotics for himself and his
crew, I feel as though the first scenes Tony Montana's cocky attitude broken English and demeanor
and disposition towards the police, introduced us to who Tony Montana was, at one point in this film
Tony Montana talks about Humphrey Bogart and a few other actors that portrayed gangsters and
gangster life style, he seemed to be admiring the gangster life style, in this scene you can almost see
the admiration within his eyes as he was telling the a story about them. This scene was brought to
light by the cinematographer who created a dim but dynamic lighting setting, the focal point was
directly on Al Pacino as he was telling his story, the effective framing and captivating way that Al
Pacino portrays his character. There was another scene in Scarface

Coming Of Film Techniques
Film style refers to the technical practices employed within filmmaking, this includes the use of
cinematography, mise–en–scene, dialogue, editing and narrative. Understanding changes in film
style is crucial to examining film in a historical, political and cultural context. All of which as these
external elements directly affected the production of film and altered the style of filmmaking. In this
essay I will be exploring how the coming of sound homogenised filmmaking and aided the creation
of a widespread distinct film style, 'Classical Hollywood' cinema.
As a result of the coming of film sound, an exclusively visual experience, became an equally audible
one and within a decade, silent films were transformed from being the exclusive mode ... Show

Short pieces of dialogue were inserted into the film through title cards, which framed the film's
narrative through textual communication. These distinctive film style techniques changed as as a
result of the coming of film sound as films were created with a consideration of sound. Scenes
began to have less cuts in order to focus on the importance of the characters dialogue, which strayed
from the previous importance placed on mise–en–scene and set design. This pattern of conventions,
created a new film style that favoured naturalistic acting, static camera shots and an overall
emphasis on dialogue and sound. In 1929, Britain released it's first 'full–talkie' film, Blackmail,
directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Despite the film originally being shot as silent film the studio decided
that the film would alternatively be produced as a talkie alongside the original release. Hitchcock's
Blackmail epitomises the changes film style accommodated with the new medium of sound. The
two versions of the film differ in filmic techniques, despite the only difference being the
introduction of sound. With the inclusion of sound there is less of a need for visual storytelling. In
the film's famous knife sequence the silent version of the scene has a shot of the bell ringing to
indicate that someone has entered the shop, this is a requirement as the audience would not
otherwise be aware of this. However, in the version with sound this shot is cut as the sound can be a
diegetic noise, leading to less of an interruption in the scene's building tension – an important motif
which became a trademark of Hitchcock's filmmaking style. Another aspect which conveys a shift in
film style is when the film's protagonist Alice reaches over to grab the knife on the table. In the
film's silent version a dark shadow is cast under her hand, acting as a connotation to Alice's inner
turmoil after

Rebecca is a gothic horror film directed by Alfred Hitchcock features Joan Fontaine (Mrs. de

older man (Mr. de WInter) who just so happened to just have lost his wife in a boat accident at sea...

This technique is the same as if it were a close up on a particular character's face to show the
emotion that is represented in that particular scene. The props that were used in this film were
outstanding especially with the engravings of RDW. However, a special effect of flashback when the
story of Rebecca's death was being told would've been much better instead of how it actually was in
the film. Other audience members and myself would have loved to actually have seen what Rebecca
had looked like rather than the story being just explained. If the use of flashback was incorporated
into the film it would make the film ten times better than what it already is. Although, Hitchcock
mainly focused on emotion in his films paying closer attention to dialogue would make this film
brilliant. When the characters finally did speak you couldn't get a good understanding of what they
were saying due to their rush in speech. The characters spoke very fast to the point where you had to
listen closely to conversation or you would miss what they were saying, this is where the importance
of reading the emotion on the character's face is vital.
A common theme that is shared throughout the entire film is that your past can and will haunt your
future. As shown in this film and many others by the great Alfred Hitchcock the theme is generally
displayed with every aspect in this film. This theme is displayed when Maxim

Baz Luhrmann, on completing the, "red curtain trilogy" has earned much success, which can be
traced from Luhrmann's evolution of cinematic techniques as well as philosophy of cinema. This
essay will examine Luhrmann's use of postmodern film techniques, by analyzing the, "red curtain
trilogy". From Strictly Ballroom's, "flattening of affect" as Scott's rigid false perception of winning
the San Pacific Ballroom dance completion. To Romeo + Juliet's multi–voiced narratives. Climaxing

metafiction are also found, as Mercutio in Luhrmann's film is a black bisexual male. There is also
techniques of, "flattening of effect" where violence detaches the families' members from emotional

Hairspray Film Techniques
The film 'Hairspray' directed by Adam Shankman, is set in June 1962 in Baltimore, America. During
this time, the Negroes were segregated from the white people. There was extensive discrimination.
Adam Shankman used effective film techniques that helped me to understand a key idea that is that
all people should be treated equally regardless of their race and colour. These techniques include the
use of prop, costume and dialogue.
The first effective film technique that helped me to understand the key idea was props. The props
used were placards and candles. During the protest for integration of Negro Day on the Corny
Collins' show, placards were used with messages written on them. Some of the messages were,
'Integration not Segregation', 'Black and White Unite' and 'Do the checkerboard'. These placards
were held by people supporting integration, stating that integration should happen between the
Negroes and the white people. Another prop used during the protest march were candles to represent
peace. The candles were used by the protesters to show that they wanted to say that even though ...

Collins' show would be officially integrated from then on, showing the supportment of the key idea.
The dress had only colours of black and white. This represented that Negroes and white people
should be united together. The black checkerboard pieces of the dress represented the Negroes,
while the white parts represented the white people. It was mixed to show integration. This portrayed

the audience and also by the editing and composition; shots showing exactly what the characters are
seeing. This allows the audience to truly understand the characters and to provoke a personal
emotional response. Here I will analyse the elements of film, describing techniques and why they
are used.

Because of this Eric grows to trust what he knows (which is his secluded life with Dylan) and
distrust the rest of society which Dylan teaches him is to be feared or attacked.
Throughout each scene the time of day changes from dawn in scene 1 to nighttime in scene 5 and
the final scene being morning again. The time of day symbolises Eric's ability to see clearly and
change the path he's on. In the beginning, when it's morning, he's impressionable, learning brutality
from Dylan. By the fifth scene he is trapped in a chain of violence, he has no choice but to allow
dylan to scar him. By the final scene it's morning and this is when Eric takes the authority to choose
what he wants to do and not follow in Dylan's footsteps.
Cinematography techniques are used throughout film to develops the characters and create a
relationship of understanding between the audience and the characters, this relationship allows the
audience to understand the main theme of isolation and hopefully leaves an impression on

Celie's eventual flourishing delivers a joyful experience, one of the greatest ones I've gotten from a

Spielberg uses the musical element of melody in the opening scene. We hear Celie and Nettie
singing a tune together, clapping their hands, and dancing around in a field of purple flowers.
Another musical element used is rhythm. Rhythm is found in the scene where Albert is kicking
Nettie off his land. The notes are long for a more dramatic sound. Spielberg uses the musical
element of texture in the scene where Celie discovers the letters from Nettie and the audience hears
all the different sounds of Africa going on at once. The sounds of the African people humming,
chopping, and drums all create a pleasant background to Nettie's voice. Another musical element
used is timbre. Timbre is found in the scene when Celie is learning to read after Nettie left. The
quality of the sound here is rich and empowering. Spielberg uses the musical element of dynamics in
the reunion of Celie and Nettie at the end. The music starts out soft but slowly gets louder as the two
finally meet. One aspect of the musical texture used is density. Density is found in the background
music to Harpo bringing Sophia to meet Albert. The music is thick and building up to Albert and
Sophie's unsmooth meeting. Spielberg used the aspect of musical texture called range. At Sophia
and Harpo's wedding, the organ is played making music from a low pitch to a high pitch creating the

Juno Film Techniques
Roger Ebert once said, "Every great film should seem new every time you see it." And when
directors can incorporate cinematic elements to further the plot of the story it enables you to see the
film from different viewpoints. The cinematic language and filmmaking techniques used in a movie
help in enhancing and bringing out the different themes within a movie. The filmmaking techniques
a director chooses to use in their movie helps in better showing the wider themes portrayed within
the movie. This can evidently be seen within the movie Juno (Jason Rietman, 2007). Elements of
mis–en–scene are used heavily in the film to further the films plot and provide understanding of
important elements and themes the characters in the film fail to highlight. Over the course of this ...

What we hear in a film is very important. When you hear creepy classical music in scary movies it
puts you on the edge of your seat. This aids in delivering the full movie experience as it draws you
in. The sound in Juno works in a similar fashion as it helps a viewer get a better understanding on
what is happening in the movie as well as make the theme of the movie more evident. Within the
first 20 seconds of the clip the director can introduce Paulie without even putting the camera on his
face. In the sequence, Juno's father is comforting her in her hospital bed blocking the door from
Juno with the camera facing away from the door. Viewers can identify Paulie by the sound of his

Jeunet Film Techniques Essay
Jeunet's techniques are influential to his film's visual style. For example, Jeunet utilized wide angle
lenses and placed the actors particularly close to the camera. This produced animated–like facial
features which worked well with the actors casted, due to their unique facial features. I did a little bit
of research on the cameras and lenses used to film and I came up on a blog. The stated that for
Tautou, Delbonnel and Jeunet found that a wide angle 14mm or 27mm lens was just right. Anything
longer or shorter did not look quite right. The camera in Amélie barely filmed scenes at eye level.
Bruno Delbonnel set the camera usually a bit above or below eye level. Mixed in with the wide
angle lenses, a small tilt up or down eventually contributes to the dynamic look. Another element I
cherished about the camera work was the way Delbonnel moved the camera towards an object or
focal point. He did not simply zoom in, he gradually moved the camera as he moved it with a turn of
about 180 degrees. The use of the track/crane device is common in most films but Jeunet's

The Technique Of Film And Video Editing
Summarizing
The Technique Of Film & Video Editing.
Film first began in 1895. By the time the first motion picture was made, editing was non–existant.
The very first films made were less than a minute long. Only films like Melies' used at least a little
bit of editing. Melies' films also grew longer in length, however they were all still single shots.
Although the films were edited to have multiple shots and to tell a story, they were not made in a
manner that we are now used to. It was only until the movies of Edwin S. Porter that film editing
started to have a meaning.
EDWIN S. PORTER– FILM CONTNUITY BEGINS
Intrigued by the length and quality of Me´lie`s's work, In 1903 Edwin S. Porter began to use a visual
continuity to make his films more compelling. In one of his films The Life of an American Fireman
(1903)he uses 20 shots in six minutes to show how the mother and child are saved. Porter believes
that a single should stand as the basic principle of editing. The job of the camera was simply to

Charlestown Film Techniques
A Film Analysis of the Town 2010
Student's Name:
Institutional Affiliation:
Question 1: The True Subject and the Theme of the Film
The Town is a 2010 crime film based in Charlestown. Featuring Doug MacRay and James Coughlin,
the film involves three major robberies in three different locations within Charlestown. A team of
highly skilled robbers is involved in high–level crimes including robbing a bank, hitting a money
transfer lorry, and finally attacking a cash house where two are gunned down. The true subject and
the theme of the town is both a crime–based and a thriller film. The most outstanding elements that
contribute to the above subject line include the overall scene, the characters most of who are former

Film Techniques in the Movie "Shawshank Redemption"
'Shawshank Redemption' directed by Frank Darabont is a compelling film about the life of one of its
prisoners, Andy. many film techniques were used through out the film as a clever way of conveying
main themes. This essay is going to examine how Darabont used camera angles and colour
effectively in this film to portray the idea of power. The use of camera angles was a clear way of
defining a characters personality. The warden, Norton, is often seen from a low angles which
highlights his high status in the prison and his authority."Your arse belongs to me". This effective
way of showing Norton's position of power allows the audience to understand the significance of
him. The prisoners, however are frequently shown from a high angle which ... Show more content

When Andy plays music we see the prisoners shown form a bird's eye view, this is another camera
angle used to display the prisoners as small and insignificant. The camera angles used by Darabont
allow the audience to see the status of the characters. As the audience we get an instant look into
who is a in control and who isn't. While Andy is inside Shawshank we do not see many variations of
colour, mainly just shades of grey. these dull, lifeless colours highlight the prisoners lack of power
and for most of the prisoners, their lack of hope. Being contained in those dull prison walls and
obeying Norton completely shows that the prisoners do not maintain any form of control in the
situation they are in. The grey boring tones of the prison represent how the prisoner are expected to
act, dull, lifeless and without and opinion. The colours Darabont has used show how insitutionalised
the prisoners become. When Brooke's is released these dull colours are also shown, emphasizing
how he has become insitutionalised. This contrasts against the colours shown during the reunion of
Andy and Red. The audience no longer sees grey, depressing colours, but instead sees the bright
sand and vibrant colours of the pacific ocean. This shows the audience how Andy is no longer
controlled by the conformity of prison life, has regained power and is now, finally free. both camera
angles and use of colour were effective ways of portraying the idea of power.

The Drive Film Techniques
Before this class I never really had analyzed the variety film techniques director's use, but taking
this class had made me realize that film is an art that creates illusions on the screen. When I watched
Drive that is when I had realized the director's intentions to contrast different colors in order to tell a
story, it's not mainly about the dialogue if not the visual presentation of the movie. Drive is an
exhilarating film that uses various techniques in order to support the theme such as warm vs cool
lighting, actor's position, and tight frames being demonstrated throughout the movie in a way to
create mystery and illusion towards the characters.
The first technique director Nicolas Winding Refn uses the majority of the time throughout the film
is the lighting techniques depicting two different worlds using warm and cool colors, using the cool
colors toward the Driver and the warm colors toward Irene this purpose maybe to illustrate two
characters one with mystery and darkness while the other is golden in the eyes of the Driver. For
example in the scene when the the driver was walking away from his car heading toward the
elevator he is in a dark dull background reflecting sadness and eeriness toward the actor and at the
elevator is Irene who is in a golden red background wearing a red shirt. She ... Show more content

Examples Of Film Techniques In Shutter Island
Shutter Island, a psychological thriller, directed by Martin Scorsese incorporates techniques
throughout the film to reveal the truth in Shutter Island. The film is based on a missing patient
investigation, but the truth shows it is a psychological experiment on Andrew to bring him back to
sanity. By analysing certain scenes, including the opening scene, Teddy and Chuck are addressing
Dr Cawley, and whist Teddy and Chuck are interviewing the patients. These three scenes assist in
displaying Shutter Island through film techniques such as camera angle and mise en scene.
The opening scene uses camera angle techniques and symbolism to expose that Teddy is a prisoner
on Shutter Island. A medium shot of Teddy violently throwing up in the bathroom is followed by a
close up shot to observe Teddy at the window saying, 'that's a lot of water.' The audience can see that
Teddy is scared of the water. Water symbolises the truth and is continuously exposed throughout the
film. When the real facts are shown, the viewer Andrew Laediss is said to not be able to live with his
trauma and guilt hence creating a second personality (Teddy) to escape it. A medium shot is used as
Teddy is seen walking through chains and shackles clanging together. This gives the audience a

Film Techniques in Twelve Angry Men
Summary: Reviews the film Twelve Angry Men, directed by Sidney Lumet. Discusses the director's
use of cinematic techniques, including lighting, music, and set design, to reinforce the themes of the
story.
________________________________________
"Twelve Angry Men", directed by Sidney Lumet, is a film which portrays intentions significantly
employed by the use of film techniques. Although entirely set in a cramped, humid jury room
(except for the few minutes at the beginning and end), Lumet applies many different film techniques
to great effectiveness.
Lumet's usage of different types of camera shots is likeliest to be the most efficacious method of
illustrating intentions in the film. Towards the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, Lumet uses the film technique of different 'camera lenses and angles' to emphasize his
intentions during the film. He employs numerous methods to enhance the ever–building tension
throughout the room, including physically moving the walls in on the actors to enhance the feeling
of claustrophobia. One case of this occurring is performed throughout the whole movie. As the story
continues, Lumet gradually changes the lenses of longer focal lengths, so that the backgrounds
seems to close in on the characters as the movie progresses, this gives viewers the feeling that there
is an increasingly amount of pressure and tension filling the room as the decision becomes more
uneasy on the jurors. Another example employed by Lumet to raise the tension level of the film is
by using various camera angles during the film. Lumet shoots the first third of the movie above eye
level, shoots the second third at eye level and the last third from below eye level. In that way, as the
film begins we look down on the characters, and the angle suggests that they can be comprehended
and mastered. By the end, the ceiling is visible, the characters loom over us, and we feel
overwhelmed by the force of their passion.
In addition, Lumet also implements the techniques of 'lighting' and 'music' to highlight to

Theme and Technique in Films
Films are about some topics or themes and involve different types of characters. Many filmmakers
use a variety of techniques to convey their messages. The choice on the type of the techniques
depends on the theme of the film and how effective the filmmakers want to communicate their ideas.
This essay aims at illuminating theme and technique in films basing its argument on Alfred
Hitchcock's movies; Notorious movie, Rope, and Strangers on the Train. Alfred Hitchcock was a
director of movies and his place in the film studies is unrivalled. He is famously known due to his

However, Guy and Anne manage to stop him and reveal the truth to the police. Apparently, the three
movies feature the theme of murder in the society. In the movie 'Rope', Brandon and Philip reveal
their obsession with murder. They see the act as a way of expressing superiority and autonomy.
Before the act, they had listened to Rupert speech who advocated the murder as a solution to some
social problems such as employment and poverty. They take these words literally and execute the
murder. Rupert was a follower of Neitzsche and Ubermenschen theories of murderer (Denzin 2008).
Alfred Hitchcock seems to direct camera at Brandon, who imagines how murder could be executed
and then goes ahead to do that. Alfred Hitchcock communicates the theme of murder in a different
way in the movie 'Strangers on a train'. Brumo meets with Guy, and he convinces him to murder
Brumo's father and in return Brumo will kill Mariam. Brumo goes ahead and murders Mariam. He
demands the same for Guy. In the Morton Party, Brumo does not only discuss murder but also
demonstrate on Cunningham's neck (Denzin 2008). The theme of murder is also evident in the
movie 'Notorious'. After discovering that Alicia is a spy who is investigating their group, Sabastian
plans to murder her silently. Sabastian is already in love with Alicia. However, after his discovery
that Alicia was a spy, he is ready to poison her so that he does go against the group. At last, he

In 127 Hours the camera angles chosen not only enhanced the intensity of the scene, but enhanced
the desired emotion portrayed. For example, in the opening scene the use of a split screen showing
different stages of the protagonist life imply to the audience his being stages of reflection. This
feature encourages the audience to connect with the main character and relate to his overall
struggles. The use of a camera recorder throughout the trailer is a narrating technique used by the
director to imply a more intimate connection between the audiences. The audience members can
easily connect with the emotions, this is a persuasive technique which in turn, is an effective tool of
communication. Hyper sensory is also used as a form of communication to influence the emotional
response from the audience. The music used throughout the trailer is comfortable and relaxing

plays a significant role in the larger background of the narrative as it acts as a build up to the climax
of the film. The chase sequence is well crafted and located and is effective in advancing the plot of
the movie (Kiplange). Lime's escape into the underground is also symbolic of a rat in a maze as the
police who enter the sewer from different tunnels, outnumber Lime. The sequence is fast paced and

individual shooting indiscriminately at the police foreshadows the probable demise of Lime under

Also, how they add to the overall entertainment value and their impact on the audience. [Hugo 21 in

Another sub element of special effects are Models, mini scenes made and filmed so that they look
big and real in the film. Models are made so that real size sets, that are expensive, don't have to be
created. These scenes build suspense and are exciting as the audience is in awe at how this set could
have been created. In Hugo this can be seen in Hugo's dream where the train crashes through and
out of the train station. The train crash scene isn't actually real size but is well made so that it looks
realistic when on screen. This is because the creators of the train crash model went to great detail,
such as how the glass shatters and explodes on the model, to make this more visually effective. It
also seems more realistic because scenes before show real people at the station and this mix of
reality and the model makes it seem more

The Second Film Technique Wilson Yip
The second film technique Wilson Yip uses to bring out Ip Man's honor is cinematography.
Although cinematography might not seem like an obvious way to bring out honor, it does its part by
emphasizing the honor already evident through the characterization and mis en scene.
Cinematography in the Ip Man movies lets the audience focus on the elements of honor Wilson Yip
is trying to convey. If it were not for very specific cinematic techniques used by Yip, most of the
honor built up through characterization and mis en scene would be useless because the audience
would be unable to focus on it. In the first movie, we can see the benefits of cinematography and
editing in the same scene with the northern fighter.3 In this scene, Yip uses the close up shot and
point of view shot to not only immerse the audience in the action, but also to help the audience
relate Ip Man with honor through an especially expressive viewpoint. Many times after Ip Man hits
the northern fighter, there is a flury of close up shots of the northern fighter's face from Ip Man's
point of view, including one just after he gets hit with a duster. The northern fighter wipes his face
and then grimaces in pain. The reaction on his face indicates the ease of which Ip Man is defeating

because he feels that endings are the most important part of a film. He says, "I sometimes get
frustrated with studio executives and critics, who will watch a film and sort of make notes as they

In the film "The Talented Mr. Ripley" directed by Anthony Minghella. Four techniques that
Minghella used to develop Peters Murder/ The final scene of the film were cinematography, editing,
music and lighting were all used to show the importance that that scene had to the film.
One important technique that was used in the scene of Peter's Death was cinematography, this was
shown when the camera was close up on Tom face as he was telling Peter that Tom Ripley is a
nobody. When the camera suddenly changes from being close up on Tom's face it switches to a mid–

emotion of confusion on both Tom and Peters faces mainly Peters. The camera is also showing Tom
as lost and guilty of what his life has turned out to be. At this point he is in too deep to tell anyone
what he has done. Tom is presented as a confused character throughout the film, yet he becomes
more of a stronger player. This shows the audience that Tom Ripley is different from he was in the

Amy Heckerling's Clueless involves a storyline, which closely follows the text of Jane Austen's

There's more to a good movie than most people think. Judgement comes down to personal taste. A
good movie will have, not just interesting but inspiring characters. Characters that, while watching
the film, will make us empathize and care about what happens to them throughout their cinematic
journey throughout the film. It allows the audience to converse about their views on who were the
good guys and who were the bad. This let's us, as the audience, to continue and embellish on the
film with our own imaginations.
Another component that makes a movie good is the story itself. Is it believable? Are we watching
this movie, feeling like it could happen to us? Or are we, instead, sitting back unpleased waiting for

Sometimes others are easier to point out. American Beauty, about Lester a depressed suburban father
in a mid–life crisis, decides to turn his hectic life around after developing an infatuation for his
daughter's attractive friend, Angela. This recurring theme of the color "red" sparks in the beginning
of the movie when we first see their front house door red, when Lesters wife is planting red roses in
the garden, Lester's red car, in almost every room in the home and in just about every scene of the
movie. Whenever Lester begins to have sexual fantasies about Angela, rose petals appear. Perhaps
the first thing to focus on first, is the use of color and motif. Throughout the entire film, the rose, the
American Beauty, had often been a symbol of Lester's lust and desire for Angela. In his fantasies,
the girl is shrouded in the roses, covering her body, betraying the fact that these are, in fact, his
passionate musings rather than reality. When Lester is killed however, the viewer can spot a bunch
of roses set on the countertop next to his body. The image is striking; because the flower had been so
associated with sexuality and infatuation, it seems somewhat odd for it to reappear in death.
However, let us not forget, the significance red represents in cinema danger. Is it because it's the

Christof uses his power and dictatorship to control the weak, and Truman has nothing but the will to
fight for himself to the end. Let the viewer see the event taking place in both the Lunar room, where
Truman at and the audience in the film. Peter Weir's purpose is to make sure we can follow every
command of Christof that what will happen to Truman and the audience's emotion while watching
it. Both of them simultaneously portray the different personality of two people, but they have one
thing in common is never give up what they want to achieve. This theme which is two technique

say that what you're doing is "illegal," or a "sin," or a violation of the health code. They may cling to
your legs, causing you to drag them along, or jump onto your back, pleading, "In the name of God,
please stop what you're doing!" This relates to Truman in this scene as Christof was the one who
jump onto his back and tell him to stop what he is doing while he is trying to get back his real life,
his freedom. It seem like an unfair battle as Christof has every power he needs but Truman has
nothing. When everybody around him told him not to run away fro Seahaven, Truman still believe
in himself and keep doing what he want, what he think it is good for

Film Techniques In The Birds
The Birds, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, is a thriller movie created in the 1960s. Throughout the
movie the main character, Melanie, goes through a substantial transformation. In the beginning of
the movie Melanie is childish, and is used to having whatever she wants handed to her. As the movie
progresses the viewer sees Melanie become more mature and act as a mother. At the start of the
movie it is evident that Melanie is very immature. She comes from a wealthy family and is
accustomed to having a high standard of living without working for it. She can barely take care of
herself, let alone take care of herself and a family. This is evident through the scene in the movie
when Melanie is in the bird shop. She only wants to purchase a bird that is full–grown, and clarifies
with the shop owner that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is evident through multiple scenes in the movie, one being the scene after Lydia finds Dan, the
chicken feed seller, dead with his eyes poked out by birds. Lying in her bed with her eyes wide in
fear, Lydia is in shock. Melanie enters her room to comfort her: "It's me, Mrs. Brenner. I thought
you might like some tea." Melanie adjusts the pillows behind Lydia and makes sure that she is warm
enough. This scene is very symbolic in that is portrays Melanie's growth. The roles of Lydia and
Melanie reverse: Melanie acts as the mother and Lydia acts as the daughter. Mothers are known for
always trying help to their children, even when the help isn't asked for. Mothers are nurturers, they
are selfless. Melanie is playing the role of the mother by providing comfort. This is a very
substantial turn in Melanie's character. Another scene that illustrates Melanie's transformation is
towards the end of the movie when the birds are attacking the house. Terrified, Cathy cuddles in
Melanie's arms. Melanie again acts as a mother by hugging Cathy and gently rubbing her

The Joneses Film Techniques Granted a captivating lead by actress Demi Moore, and a neat narrative, The Joneses captures the life of a more than average family that enacts the fascinating sequels that take place whilst living a life of a con–artistry, and are they ever so convincing. With intentions to simply be desired by members of their upscale neighborhood, the fictitious, fabricated family perform intense hoaxes in order to promote high end products to those surrounding them. The Joneses is an alluring comedy that offers a laugh for the entire family ;however, I believe there are secondary adjustments that could improve the final message of the film. • 3. The Film Techniques Used By Cameron Being a science fiction fan during his childhood, he worked his way in producing several highly acclaimed science fiction movies such as Avatar, Aliens, and the Terminator. Born on August 16, 1954, in Ontario Canada and later moved to California to finish his college at California State University. In order to pursue his dreams in cinematography, he worked as a truck driver and would work on screenplays. Then his career began from an art director in Battle beyond the Stars (1980) to directing various films. Now, he is an Oscar–winning director whose films Titanic (1997) and Avatar (2009) remains the top grossing films of all time. He has won various awards from different sides of the world, Norway, France, and the United Kingdom. Mise–en–scenes were well incorporated in each of James Cameron's movies especially for science fiction movies that used elegantly crafted visuals. This paper will focus on the film techniques used by Cameron in his three most known movies, Titanic (1997), Avatar (2009), and Terminator series. Mise–en–scene according to John Gibbs is used in film studies in the discussion of visual style. Translated literally it means "To put on stage", but for the purpose of students, it is defined as the contents of the frame and the way they are organized (p 5). In addition, a director's style can be identified only through the arrangement and orchestrations of the film's mise–en–scene (Nelmes, 425).The films Titanic, Avatar, and Terminator series were successful ... Even if the film is not the most visible pleasing, Reitman still uses techniques of the film industry to give the movie more depth. In one scene from earlier in the film, Reitman is able to use a vast variety of techniques in a fairly short sequence in order to set the tone for the rest of the movie. • 7. Sunrise Film Techniques Sunrise is a film directed by director F.W.Murnau that some might argue is more of a classic love story but I am going to show you why this is more of a horror film instead. Sunrise had a hint of love in it indeed but it contains plot of murder as well as attempt of murder twice. It also contains a very controlling character that show hints of being evil or monster like in her personality as well as her appearance. The director used the camera angle, camera movement, as well as lighting to show why this is more of a dark and chilling story and I will explain why. The first obvious clue to the viewers that this might be more of a horror film than a love film is the very controlling a devil like character that we get introduced to very early ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We get a little bit of everything in this film such as creepy locations and camera angle that shows darkness to a shot or characters true feeling or intention. F.W.Murnau used a variety of ways to show the horror prospective in this film. in the beginning we see the husband meeting his lover in a dark and creepy moon lit swamp. In an edit sequence we get a trailing shot of the husband walking through the very dark and gloomy swap with a slouch posture and hands in his pockets, we also hear a very slow and creepy soundtrack playing in the background giving the audiences a chilling feels to it. Then we see that he walks out of the frame and the camera keeps going and stops on a shot of the city woman standing near some bushes with a very bright and high moon in the background. This is where we can draw a clear conclusion that the location is imposed on us to give a feeling of sadness or evil sin that they are about to commit in this isolated part of the farm. He uses high angles several time through the film as well to show the shadows of darkness on characters face and give them a monster like appearance. We see a perfect example of this in the shot of a close up of the husband face at a high angle and low light in the boat when he is about to stand up to kill his wife. We see the dark shadow in his face and his slouched Frankenstein posture as he moves his eye on his wife about to kill her. He used these cinematic techniques to show character emotions and implement the horror prospective in the film and these are clear reasons why some might say this is more horror than a classic love story of two ... • 9. Mulchay Film Techniques Shine and swimming upstream are two very exciting movies. Muclahy and Hicks have created two extremely strong characters through using different camera angles, sounding, and lighting when they are on the screen. These two directors also created two intense action scenes through using those techniques. Even though both exciting films have different stories within them they still pose similar themes. Mulchay and Hicks created two very intense and exciting action themes in the movies swimming upstream and Shine. When Tony and John were racing in the trials for the empire games, camera angles, transitions and the type of music being played created the audience to move to the edge of their seats. The way the camera transitioned from Tony to John ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the film, Swimming Up Stream Mulcahy directed a scene where Tony and his older brother, Harold Jnr, had a boxing match with their father watching on. Both sons wanted to impress their father, but it was obvious that Tony was the weaker son and wasn't his father's favorite at all. In the scene, it portrayed Tony's characteristics as him not being a fighter, being a pushover but also wanting to impress his father. Because when his father commented, "com' on you little poofta get up and fight, stop being a little sissy." During the fight, he got up and started to fight back until his mother came in and broke them up. The camera angles and music that was used when Tony was the focal point of the screen generally portrayed him as determined, but also made the audience feel his feeling of being disowned. David also had the same kind of camera angles and music displayed when he was the center focus, as when he told his father about leaving Australia to move to London, to live the dream of becoming one of the best pianists in the world. As he got the invite to (need the college) he told his father in an extremely weak voice "I wanna go and you can't stop me." After he said that he got abused by his father, and when he was coming up the camera angles was as if the audience was looking down to him which made him be portrayed as weak and a pushover. David was extremely influenced by his father, extremely so that when he became disabled he would murmur words such as "I'm a very lucky boy" continuously, he would also murmur words and phrases that his father drilled into him since a young age. Both boys were push overs and did exactly what their fathers told them to do, but were also strong and independent when they discovered that they are mentally stronger than their fathers, these characters were a key point in the making of the ... • 11. The Crucible Film Techniques Another scene in the film in which Kaye has carefully used the soundtrack to convey the idea of Derek's actions affecting Danny is the revelation scene later on in the film. During this scene, we see Derek reflecting on the past through a flashback. A buildup of soft violin, piano and cello sounds are used in contrast to other parts of the film to amplify the sense of happiness and to show how Derek cherishes this memory as it is possibly the last moment where his life was good. By using a build up of volume and pace in the soundtrack Kaye is able to make the audience understand how this is a past memory that is happy for Derek and that the emotions he is experiencing are due to his change of character from a violent racist into a normal person. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through his directing Kaye shows the viewer the link between Danny and Derek, highlighting the issue of racial traits being passed down through modern American families and warning the audience about the future. His use of camerawork and soundtrack in uncommon ways compared to how other films of this genre make this film stand out and provide a more visceral and realistic sense of how racism affects many Americans' in modern times. Kaye's use of close–ups provide the raw and gut wrenching emotions in every scene, be it the stomach turning sense of teeth touching the curb or to highlight the emotion on a character's face. His use of soundtrack further enhances every scene seamlessly building tension and then bringing it all crashing down in a high pitched threnody. Through studying this film it is clear to see that Tony Kaye's masterful use of camerawork and soundtrack in these two scenes successfully pushes the message of the film home, which is that even though we may not be able to see it, racist traits are still passed down through families in today's world. Although the entire film helps to further push that point it is these two scenes that show to the viewer that even a simple racist statement from a parent or sibling can be enough to affect a child for the rest of their life and to further spread racism and intolerance into the ... Each scene becomes progressively understanding and clear that Tony Montana goal is to become a boss, by setting into motion plans to make his way into South Florida by any means necessary, Montana at this time has taken on hit man jobs and started paddling narcotics for himself and his crew, I feel as though the first scenes Tony Montana's cocky attitude broken English and demeanor and disposition towards the police, introduced us to who Tony Montana was, at one point in this film Tony Montana talks about Humphrey Bogart and a few other actors that portrayed gangsters and gangster life style, he seemed to be admiring the gangster life style, in this scene you can almost see the admiration within his eyes as he was telling the a story about them. This scene was brought to light by the cinematographer who created a dim but dynamic lighting setting, the focal point was directly on Al Pacino as he was telling his story, the effective framing and captivating way that Al Pacino portrays his character. • 15. Coming Of Film Techniques Film style refers to the technical practices employed within filmmaking, this includes the use of cinematography, mise–en–scene, dialogue, editing and narrative. Understanding changes in film style is crucial to examining film in a historical, political and cultural context. All of which as these external elements directly affected the production of film and altered the style of filmmaking. In this essay I will be exploring how the coming of sound homogenised filmmaking and aided the creation of a widespread distinct film style, 'Classical Hollywood' cinema. As a result of the coming of film sound, an exclusively visual experience, became an equally audible one and within a decade, silent films were transformed from being the exclusive mode ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Short pieces of dialogue were inserted into the film through title cards, which framed the film's narrative through textual communication. These distinctive film style techniques changed as as a result of the coming of film sound as films were created with a consideration of sound. Scenes began to have less cuts in order to focus on the importance of the characters dialogue, which strayed from the previous importance placed on mise–en–scene and set design. This pattern of conventions, created a new film style that favoured naturalistic acting, static camera shots and an overall emphasis on dialogue and sound. In 1929, Britain released it's first 'full–talkie' film, Blackmail, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Despite the film originally being shot as silent film the studio decided that the film would alternatively be produced as a talkie alongside the original release. Hitchcock's Blackmail epitomises the changes film style accommodated with the new medium of sound. The two versions of the film differ in filmic techniques, despite the only difference being the introduction of sound. With the inclusion of sound there is less of a need for visual storytelling. In the film's famous knife sequence the silent version of the scene has a shot of the bell ringing to indicate that someone has entered the shop, this is a requirement as the audience would not otherwise be aware of this. However, in the version with sound this shot is cut as the sound can be a diegetic noise, leading to less of an interruption in the scene's building tension – an important motif which became a trademark of Hitchcock's filmmaking style. Another aspect which conveys a shift in film style is when the film's protagonist Alice reaches over to grab the knife on the table. In the film's silent version a dark shadow is cast under her hand, acting as a connotation to Alice's inner turmoil after ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Rebecca is a gothic horror film directed by Alfred Hitchcock features Joan Fontaine (Mrs. de Winter), Laurence Olivier (Maxim de Winter), Judith Anderson (Mrs. Danvers), and Florence Bates (Mrs. Van Hopper). The actors in this film make the movie worth watching. The narrator, a young woman vacationing in Monte Carlo with her employer crosses paths with an older man (Mr. de WInter) who just so happened to just have lost his wife in a boat accident at sea... or at least everyone thinks. The props that were used in this film were outstanding especially with the engravings of RDW. However, a special effect of flashback when the story of Rebecca's death was being told would've been much better instead of how it actually was in the film. Other audience members and myself would have loved to actually have seen what Rebecca had looked like rather than the story being just explained. If the use of flashback was incorporated into the film it would make the film ten times better than what it already is. Although, Hitchcock mainly focused on emotion in his films paying closer attention to dialogue would make this film brilliant. When the characters finally did speak you couldn't get a good understanding of what they were saying due to their rush in speech. The characters spoke very fast to the point where you had to listen closely to conversation or you would miss what they were saying, this is where the importance of reading the emotion on the character's face is vital. A common theme that is shared throughout the entire film is that your past can and will haunt your future. As shown in this film and many others by the great Alfred Hitchcock the theme is generally displayed with every aspect in this film. This theme is displayed when Maxim ... There was extensive discrimination. Adam Shankman used effective film techniques that helped me to understand a key idea that is that all people should be treated equally regardless of their race and colour. These techniques include the use of prop, costume and dialogue. The first effective film technique that helped me to understand the key idea was props. The props used were placards and candles. For example, Jeunet utilized wide angle lenses and placed the actors particularly close to the camera. This produced animated–like facial features which worked well with the actors casted, due to their unique facial features. I did a little bit of research on the cameras and lenses used to film and I came up on a blog. The stated that for Tautou, Delbonnel and Jeunet found that a wide angle 14mm or 27mm lens was just right. Anything longer or shorter did not look quite right. The camera in Amélie barely filmed scenes at eye level. Bruno Delbonnel set the camera usually a bit above or below eye level. Mixed in with the wide angle lenses, a small tilt up or down eventually contributes to the dynamic look. Another element I cherished about the camera work was the way Delbonnel moved the camera towards an object or focal point. He did not simply zoom in, he gradually moved the camera as he moved it with a turn of about 180 degrees. The use of the track/crane device is common in most films but Jeunet's controlled ... As the story continues, Lumet gradually changes the lenses of longer focal lengths, so that the backgrounds seems to close in on the characters as the movie progresses, this gives viewers the feeling that there is an increasingly amount of pressure and tension filling the room as the decision becomes more uneasy on the jurors. Another example employed by Lumet to raise the tension level of the film is by using various camera angles during the film. This essay aims at illuminating theme and technique in films basing its argument on Alfred Hitchcock's movies; Notorious movie, Rope, and Strangers on the Train. Alfred Hitchcock was a director of movies and his place in the film studies is unrivalled. He is famously known due to his brilliant plots, witty dialogue, and his ability to tell stories visually. However, Guy and Anne manage to stop him and reveal the truth to the police. Apparently, the three movies feature the theme of murder in the society. In the movie 'Rope', Brandon and Philip reveal their obsession with murder. They see the act as a way of expressing superiority and autonomy. Before the act, they had listened to Rupert speech who advocated the murder as a solution to some social problems such as employment and poverty. They take these words literally and execute the murder. Rupert was a follower of Neitzsche and Ubermenschen theories of murderer (Denzin 2008). Alfred Hitchcock seems to direct camera at Brandon, who imagines how murder could be executed and then goes ahead to do that. Alfred Hitchcock communicates the theme of murder in a different way in the movie 'Strangers on a train'. Brumo meets with Guy, and he convinces him to murder Brumo's father and in return Brumo will kill Mariam. Brumo goes ahead and murders Mariam. He demands the same for Guy. In the Morton Party, Brumo does not only discuss murder but also demonstrate on Cunningham's neck (Denzin 2008). The theme of murder is also evident in the movie 'Notorious'. Chroma key, models, CGI and stunts all come under Special effects, which are illusions to the eye seen on screen. But today I'll just be discussing the sub elements of Chroma key and models. Also, how they add to the overall entertainment value and their impact on the audience. [Hugo 21 in background fades in] Chroma key is created by green or blue screens where images are inserted into the area where the green or blue screens are. Models are made so that real size sets, that are expensive, don't have to be created. These scenes build suspense and are exciting as the audience is in awe at how this set could have been created. In Hugo this can be seen in Hugo's dream where the train crashes through and out of the train station. The train crash scene isn't actually real size but is well made so that it looks realistic when on screen. Gcse Film Techniques The 2001 Baz Luhrmann Moulin Rouge production is assembled like a bunch frenzied snapshots of what a drug induced erotic encounter would look like, or what we would imagine it would look like. The film does not depend on dialogue but on the way you imagine a fantasy from one angle and then another with all of extreme contrast between dark and light colors and the fast movement of the film. Luhrman uses many different techniques to convey images to his viewers. Examples of these are mise–en–scene, cinematography, and editing. All of these techniques are used to draw you into the film; the uses of these together make a fantastic story about love. Luhrman uses mise–en–scene to a great effect. A perfect example of this is in the first scene where we are introduced into Christian's attic. • 65. The Second Film Technique Wilson Yip The second film technique Wilson Yip uses to bring out Ip Man's honor is cinematography. Although cinematography might not seem like an obvious way to bring out honor, it does its part by emphasizing the honor already evident through the characterization and mis en scene. Cinematography in the Ip Man movies lets the audience focus on the elements of honor Wilson Yip is trying to convey. If it were not for very specific cinematic techniques used by Yip, most of the honor built up through characterization and mis en scene would be useless because the audience would be unable to focus on it. In the first movie, we can see the benefits of cinematography and editing in the same scene with the northern fighter.3 In this scene, Yip uses the close up shot and point of view shot to not only immerse the audience in the action, but also to help the audience relate Ip Man with honor through an especially expressive viewpoint. Many times after Ip Man hits the northern fighter, there is a flury of close up shots of the northern fighter's face from Ip Man's point of view, including one just after he gets hit with a duster. The northern fighter wipes his face and then grimaces in pain. The reaction on his face indicates the ease of which Ip Man is defeating the him. There are a couple of things that are similar throughout his productions. The first is the themes he uses in his films. Nolan often uses twists and surprises his audience because he feels that endings are the most important part of a film. He says, "I sometimes get frustrated with studio executives and critics, who will watch a film and sort of make notes as they go... because that's not how movies work. The audience gets to the end and then you take about five minutes to decided 'ok what was all that' and your brain really looks at everything in a different way, and then you decide. One important technique that was used in the scene of Peter's Death was cinematography, this was shown when the camera was close up on Tom face as he was telling Peter that Tom Ripley is a nobody. When the camera suddenly changes from being close up on Tom's face it switches to a mid– shot of Peter on the bed asking Tom what he's going on about. These camera angles show the emotion of confusion on both Tom and Peters faces mainly Peters. The camera is also showing Tom as lost and guilty of what his life has turned out to be.
