Theproductionreachedalevelof29MTby1942and30MTby1946.Atthebeginningofthe1stPlan,annualproductionwentupto33MT.
Duringthefirst25yearsofindependence,growthinthecoalproductionwasveryslow.Fromalevelofaround30milliontonnes(MT)atthetimeofindependence,coalproductionincreasedtoonly73MTin1970-71.

Theproductionofcoalincreasedfromalevelofabout70milliontonnesatthetimeofnationalizationofcoalminesinearly1970'sto565.64milliontonnesin2013-14.

SingareniCollieriesCompanyLimited(SCCL):SCCListhemainsourceforsupplyofcoaltothesouthernregion.Thecompanyproducesabout9%ofIndia’stotalcoalproduction.

9. Captive Blocks
Thepolicyforcaptivemining,introducedin1993,openedthecoalsectortoprivateinvestment,howeverlimitedprogresshasbeenmadeinthecaptivecoalblocksallottedbythegovernment.
Productionofcoalfromcaptiveblocksstartedin1997withTaraEastandWestCoalBlockallottedtoWestBengalStateElectricityBoard.
Outofcoalblocksallotted,only40blockshavestartedproductionandanother6coalblocksarenearingproduction.Thecombinedproductionofcoalfromtheseblockswasonly36.167MTin2012-13.
