ASSURE
September 9, 2014
A- My class consists of 20 fourth graders. There are 11 girls and 9 boys. There are a few
different racial groups in my class. Aside from the 17 other children, there are 2 Muslims, 3
Jews, and 2 African Americans.
S- In my class, the students will study the religious winter holiday practices of Christmas,
Hanukah, Ramadan, and Kwanza. They will participate in daily activities such as watching
documentaries, doing research, and looking at the different aspects of each religion. At the end of
the week I will split them into groups where the group will be assigned a holiday and must give a
short presentation to the class. I plan for my students to know about the different religious
holidays with 80% accuracy.
S- To help the students better understand the different winter holidays they will have access to
many helpful materials. I will present short clips that describe the four different holidays. Aside
from that they will also have reading materials, worksheets, power points, and podcasts that
explain the different holidays. Using these materials will not only help them to have a better
understanding of the holidays, but they will also teach them how to use different types of media
and materials.
U- Before class begins I will prepare the materials so if anything goes wrong with my video clips
or power points, I will still be able to use the worksheets with information from the reading
materials. I will use the videos to help them visually see the traditions of each holiday. With the
power point I will present important dates, times, and activities of each holiday. At the beginning
of the week there will be four groups of five who will work together on one of the four holidays.
They will work together to prepare information to present to the class on Friday so that I can
assess each student’s progress of the different religious holidays.
R- After the week is over I will continually give assignments that deal with the four different
holidays so that the student’s knowledge of them stays fresh. I will also do this assignment far
ahead of the winter months; so that we can review them once the winter holiday season arrives.
E- I will give a short question/answer worksheet at the end of each day to track each student’s
progress. The group presentation will also allow me to see what each student has learned without
giving a test. This makes the students feel like the learning is fun and helps them to memorize
things easier than if they were preparing for a test.
