Allusion In I Am Legend
Plot Summary
In the novella I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, Robert is the last human on Earth that has been plagued by a disease that turns humans into
vampires. This infection has ended with Neville alone in a house to fend and survive, in an undisclosed area of Los Angeles. It is mentioned several
times through the novella that bombs could have caused the mutation of a disease and constant sandstorms attribute to the spreading of the infection
throughout the areas of Los Angeles. In order to fend off the blood sucking vampires, Neville sets up perimeters of garlic, and mirrors to repel the
vampires getting closer to his house. Additionally, Neville installs lights and boards his windows so the vamps can't get in without a fight. All of his...

This creates an image of a trapped Robin on an island being given answers by Santa by sleigh. What it really means, is that Neville, once on a
hopeless island of despair, now has answers to his problems that he is facing. The author refers to Santa Claus because he is known to come to town
and bring gifts, but instead, he brings answers to Neville. In addition, it refers to Robin Crusoe a character that was once trapped on a deserted
island for a long period of time before being saved and getting trapped again. As is Neville, alone and trapped in a world where vampires surround
him every day, waiting for the chance to jump him for his

As he was leaning closer to kiss me, we heard a knock on my front door. "Liz," I said to him.
Leaving his side, I went to open the door. "Hi!" She kissed me on both cheeks and hand me a basket full of wines, crackers and cheeses she was
holding. "Welcome home." She said, in way of greeting. "Darling, I had not seen you forever. I found you a hunk of a man. He is a gorgeous
stockbroker with a great personality. He is..." Liz stopped mid sentence when she notice Brian behind me, looking furious. She gazed my way stunned.
"She doesn't need a man, she has a man." He yelled.
Startled, Liz turned around to face Brian. Looking at the ceiling, I closed my eyes for a second. Brian walked toward us and extends his hand to Liz.
"I am not sure if you remember me, but I am Brian Ross. Isabel's other half and Mary's brother." She smiled and said, "I know who you are. I had been
friends with your sister Mary for many years. We never got the chance to meet officially, but I had seen you and talked to you over the phone on
several occasions, if I remember correctly. If you do not know this already, I am Isabel's closest and dearest friend. It is nice to meet you finally. I am
so sorry for what I said earlier. I had no idea Isabel was seen anybody. Isabel and I had not seen each other for almost a month."
Turning to me, he responded through gritted teeth, "I guess Isabel failed to mention me to her dearest friends."
Walking into the kitchen with Liz basket, I placed it

"She landed 500 years ago. How is it possible?" questioned Aella.

A Peaceful Day Of A Crummy Condo
It was a peaceful day in a crummy condo. Kade and I were sitting in his room. An hour of AP Social Studies homework and 7th grade English
homework in when a gust of wind came through the closed window. How do I put this, there was a noise. A very dim, subtle noise. A ZING,ssive,
easygoing way, and the women said to us in a soft, calm voice, "We are your parents, we want to take you home". My brother and I were
abandoned when he was 6 months old. One morning my father was making me chocolate chip pancakes and the next, I was alone. Imagine a five
year old calling 911 saying your parents were abducted by aliens. That's what I wanted to believe. After I turned 10, I realized that every prayer
wasn't worth it. My parents were never coming back. My brother and I were taken to Child Services the next day and we sent to Billy and Jen's
house, me scared little 5 year old about to take on a world of responsibilities. We got home and Billy gave me a puppy and told me that she was
there for me when they weren't and to take care of my brother. They left me there for a week, so I called Miss Tammy, the child services lady and
she took me to a new home. We stayed there until I turned 13. It was a group home and they gave us food, shelter, and, educational opportunities. But
no true compassion or a parent like figure. When I realized that we were never going to get the love we deserve, I took Kade in the middle of the
night and found an abandoned condo. It had all the amenities that a

I Am Original From A New Canadian Community
Living in our complex society with some many beliefs, opinions, religions, biases, norms, cultures, limitations, doubts, and fears, etc. it is
extremely easy for individuals to have a clash of conflicts among these attributes as they often contradict each other because two or more of these
attributes are required for the daily routines. In this essay, I will be discussing my life and how it relates to my capitalist believes and how I can
only achieve them by being a socialized member integrated into my new Canadian community. I'm original from Nigeria, a highly capitalist
country, and I was also born into a family of capitalist, I was thought that the only way to true financial success it to be a capitalist. I like the idea
and concept but there was a problem, I was not a socializing type of guy and I was shy and to be a success capitalist, socializing with people is
extremely important. Knowing this fact motivated me to strive to improve my communication and people's skills but I still had problems being
confident, I had problems expressing myself because I felt that showed a sign of weakness and I did not want to be known as the weak one.
Approximately five years ago I decided to come to Canada to further my education, this decision will probably be one of the best decisions I have ever
made, my knowledge, self–confidence, thinking, behavior and overall look on life improved exponentially. I have even been able to discover more
interesting things about myself and want

I Am Legend: Doctor Allice Krippin
The movie I am Legend begins with Doctor Allice Krippin discussing how she has taken the measles virus and altered its structure to make it beneficial
to the body rather than it being harmful to the human body. Doctor Krippin claims that the genetically engineered virus can possibly cure cancer.
Initially it does appear that the genetically engineered measles virus was in fact going to cure cancer. During the human clinical trials part of the
research, researchers took ten thousand and nine cancer patients and infected them all with the new strain of the measles virus. At the end of the human
testing phase all ten thousand and nine subjects were cancer free. The newly designed measles virus was in fact on its way to cure cancer; until it
ultimately mutated. Fast–forward three years after the human clinical trails and the human population Of New York City appears to be extinct. The
only sign of human civilization is one man, Robert Nevile and his dog Sam. Robert was a Lieutenant Colonel in the US army before the virus
mutated. Colonel Nevile studied the out break and spread of viruses while assigned to the army.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

pigmentation in the skin and eyes, hair loss, enlarged pupils, elevated heart rates and sensitivity to sun or ultra violet lights. During his research Robert

Essay On I Am Legend By Richard Matheson
In I am Legend, Richard Matheson depicted Robert Neville as another man in another life before the plague broke out. He was a father and a
husband. Your average joe working a blue collar job in the 1950 's, facts of life that change for him once the plague took hold of humanity. He created
a safe–guarded sanctuary for himself within his own home fortified by garlic and crosses from the vampires who dominated the fallen world outside.
Solitude was his only companion. Society provided Neville with support, structure, morals, and a community. With the fall of society, Neville priorities
had changed. He had changed. Whilst the novel appears to focus heavily on alienation, Matheson perhaps also meant to depict another underlying plot
theme. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Ruth questions him as to why he kill, he responds with: "Only to–to survive." (Matheson 166). An iconic lone ranger, refusing to surrender to a
greater power comes into mind, an image created by culture, of a hero. Due to Neville 's perspective, people want to identify with heroes like Neville
and oppose villains like the vampires or the Soviet Union. Cohen argued, monsters have the ability to illuminate the secrets of the era. Monsters may
have the ability to shed light on secrets of the era. Throughout many instances in history, both sides of war believe they are right. Both sides ultimately
demonize one another. However, history is ultimately written by its victor, as one side will eventually win. Only one will go on to tell the 'story ' to
the world. The plague had devastated the human population and the vampires overrun the world now. Robert Neville, being on the other side of this
war, had lost. As the by–product of this new world, he challenged the vampires ' views. In Cohen's first thesis, the monsters are said to be born out of
a particular "time, a feeling, and a place" and exist as "pure culture". The monsters, being a product of its time, represent the views of the people of
that era, but they can also challenge the public 's view. Robert was their monster. He served to reinterpret parts of this new society. The monsters and
the views they represent linger in the mind of their creators and

Parenting Styles In I Am Sam
While watching "I Am Sam", Baumrind's parenting styles are displayed in the main characters. The parenting style Sam best represents is
authoritative. Sam encourages Lucy to be the best she can be while still enforcing rules. Lucy pretends she cannot read the word "different" because
she does not want to progress without Sam, and he forces her to read the word. Sam also knows what is right and wrong and enforces this on Lucy.
When Lucy climbed out of the window and walked to Sam's new apartment, he took her right back to her foster family's house. Sam may have the
mental capacity of a seven year–old, but he is a good parent in my eyes. Another parenting style shown in "I Am Sam" is neglectful parenting. Sam's
lawyer, Rita is always busy with her practice and does not spend enough time with her son, resulting in him being uninterested in her. Rita's husband is
never around and is unfaithful to Rita. Rita not having enough time for her son and her husband leaving creates an unstable environment for her son. ...

The movie ended with Sam telling Randy that Lucy needs a mother figure in her life, and I assumed that the next scene would be the court's decision.
Instead, the ending scene of "I Am Sam" was Lucy playing in a soccer game with her father, Sam as a referee and Randy with her husband in the
stands. The film ends with unanswered questions, and makes you wonder what had happened with Sam and Lucy. Many questions are unanswered in
the final scene. Did Sam get custody? Did Randy and her husband adopt Lucy and Sam has visitations? Based on the ending of the film I can only
assume that the court made the decision for Sam, Randy and her husband to receive joint custody of Lucy. I am satisfied with this ending because Sam
gets to be with his daughter who he loves and Lucy has a mother figure in her

Themes Of I Am Legend
Dystopia is a society or place that is unpleasant and bad. Dystopian movies are often based on themes that play out in the real world. The dystopian
movie "I am Legend" by Frances Lawrence has a theme of Loss of Humanity. I am Legend is about a woman who spread a virus saying it was the cure
to cancer. The cure that was said to be the cure to cancer, killed everyone in the city and Dr. Robert Neville is trying to find a cure to the virus that
affected the the entire city. Throughout the movie, the theme that represented "I am Legend" used literary devices and universal storytelling element. The
theme is built through the use of symbols, narrative transport, heroic scenarios, and an interesting way in which the movie is told.
The butterfly is one symbol from the movie that relates to the theme Loss of Humanity. The butterfly was constantly used throughout the entire movie
as a way for change in the life of humanity. Near the end of the movie Robert Neville remembered what his daughter told him, "Look Daddy, it's a
butterfly," (Lawrence). This relates back to theme Loss of Humanity because it shows Robert Neville about his own personal destiny. Also, the
butterfly goes back to symbolize that him losing his life with help save others. The butterfly symbolizes change, lightness, and transformation of how
the world is going to end up. Robert Neville losing his family relates back to the theme Loss of Humanity. In the beginning of the movie, Robert lost

Personal Eflection With The Reflective Best Self
Introduction "Do you want to know who you are? Don't ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you." This quote was spoken by the second
president of the united states and revered Patriot leader, Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson is trying to express how a person's true character and personality
is expressed through their actions and how they live their lives, so if someone wants to truly know who they are inside, the best indications comes
from their actions and how they impacted others. One excellent way to reflect upon one's inner self is with the Reflected Best Self Exerciseв„ў
(RBSEв„ў) developed by the University of Michigan. This exercise utilizes stories collected from people in one's life to help them understand who
they are and what they are like when they are at their very best. This exercise helps to highlight a person's strength and to distill confidence into their
character. It helps a person to explore who they genuinely are and to be able to know their own personality a little bit better. This is especially crucial in
the business world where knowing oneself, your strengths and limitations, is crucial in becoming an effective leader. With the help of this exercise, a
person can become more confident in their leadership style, more certain in their decisions, and better able to fall back on their strengths when life
become difficult. It is with these basic assumptions and goals that I will immerse myself in this exercise with. I will search to gain valuable insight
of who I truly am. I will define my strength, my enabler, and my blockers. I will use all the data available to create a best self–portrait and to identify
key trends in my personality and characteristics. My importantly, I will delve into the roots of my behaviors and actions to learn who I am as a
leader, as a worker, as a sibling, as a son, as a friend, and as a person in general. With all this insight combined I will be able to effectively orient
myself towards the future and be the type of leader and man that I dream of being, with the help of my strengths.
Initial Perspective on My Strengths In the past few years, I have often thought that I have learned a great deal about who I am. I have grown much

Examples Of Pride In King Lear
Lear's pride blinds him to the truth, but once he is able to see he achieves redemption. Lear's pride is evident when he asks his daughters to praise and
tell him how much they love him. Lear intends to divide his kingdom among his three daughters, demands public declaration of their love and asks
them, "Tell me, my daughters/ Which of you shall we say doth love us most,/ That we our largest bounty may extend/ Where nature doth with merit

kingdom to the daughter who loves him most. Clearly, Lear wants to hear them say that so he can be reminded of how powerful he is. Lear's

Believe it or not, I am Canadian. I do not follow ordinary Canadian stereotypes like eating maples syrup for every meal or watching hockey every

being Canadian. Canada has so many wonderful things to offer and I am grateful for living in this country. Being Canadian means having freedom,
obtaining a sense of safety and treating all citizens equally. Whenever I hear the term Canadian, the word freedom comes to mind immediately. We as
a country have freedom of speech and with this privilege, we are able to state what we want to say and be further involved in government decisions and

Nature In King Lear
English poet and playwright, William Shakespeare is universally considered the greatest dramatist of all time. One of these is his play titled "King
Lear" which is centred on the Renaissance period where the human being was the focus of central importance rather than divine beings. Unlike his
other plays, Shakespeare chooses to abstain from leaving the play with Lear realising that his personal tragedy is his own doing but continues by
making him see things in a different perspective. Furthermore, King Lear represents the merging of self and other– what it means to be human. For
instance, this merge of self and other has been brought to life in the play; however it cannot survive at the time and has to be buried. My essays intent

He is moving from the confines of his own selfish mind. "I have ta'en too little care of this!" The "I" in this line refers to "I" as the king and also "I"
as the individual. He is frustrated that he cannot change the situation of the poor people and he sees a mirror image of himself when he looks at
poor Tom, he sees another human being. Lear feels guilty for not doing his best to help the poor when he was still king but he wouldn't have been
able to do anything about it especially wanting to eradicate poverty because no one would have allowed change in the social system. He urges
powerful men to learn about hardship and what it feels like to suffer and not have anyone to share your troubles with. He also longs for the
powerful men to give themselves a chance to be in the shoes of the poor and maybe give back to them and support them and share the excess of
wealth with them so that the world can be a better place with equality. Lear finally realises that he is no different to the people whom he saw as
invisible, he sees that his personal tragedy is his own doing but tries to rectify this by looking at things in a different perspective and also see that
people are just the same as he is– they are all

The Interpretation Of A Human
Edmund Carnevale

The Interpretation of a Human
How do a creature 's actions portray them as human or monstrous? In what way do those who are not human act or look and if not human, then what
are they? In Mary Shelley 's Frankenstein, it is observed that humans are characterized by showing compassion towards others and having character
flaws, but Victor's creature's grotesque physical appearance causes society to abandon him. Humans will always have flaws and make mistakes, and
this makes them human, but also shows one of the weaknesses that humans have. When Victor has destroyed the second creature in spite of his first
creation, the malevolent creature shows up and foreshadows that something bad will happen on Victor's wedding night. This leads Victor to narrate,
"The prospect did not move me to fear; yet when I thought of my beloved Elizabeth,–of her tears and endless sorrow, when she should find her lover so
barbarously snatched from her" (Shelly 156). Victor thinks about himself and is blind to the notion that his wife might possibly die. This proves that
Victor's display of self centeredness is a trait that makes him human. After Victor had discovered that his creation had been the real murderer of his
relative, William, he is shocked to find out that his cousin Justine Moritz had been accused and he says, "My tale was not one to announce publicly; its
astounding horror would be looked upon as madness

I Am Legend, Minority Report
In today's society, we continually live in fear that something catastrophic is waiting right around the corner. The genre of science fiction has made
that fear even more prominent in today's society with a plethora of movies showing a dystopian world. Popular movies like The Hunger Games bring
viewers into a world where two people every year must fight to death to show their superiority and to earn their freedom much like roman times in the
coliseum. Hunger Games isn't the first movie to play on this fear though. I Am Legend, Minority Report, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers are movies
specifically created to bring fear and discontentment to the human mind by feeding the fear of the unknown. The 2007 movie I Am Legend is the story

The idea that big brother is watching everything and has control is brought to life in this movie. Precrime is program administered by the

plagued our nation since it's creation. People want freedom and the ability to make their own choices regardless of the consequences but when tragic
events happen the mindset of the citizen can shift. After 9/11 citizens were willing to blindly follow the government's decree for retribution as

Case Study: The Canadian Magazine Dispute
The Canadian Magazine Dispute 1 It is highly probable that the desire to protect the culture of Canada by the Canadian Government was not genuine.
This is because the magazine industry is only a small portion of the entire Canadian mass media. Hence, the situation leads us to question, what is the
hidden intention and the actual motive behind Canadian Government backing its magazine industry? If the Canadian Government was genuine about
protecting its culture from US, I believe that there are more effective and logical ways to protect the culture, instead of focusing to protect only the
magazine industry. 2 It is highly likely that the Canadian Government and its ministers of trade and culture were lobbied by the Canadian magazine
industry. The magazine industry probably put a lot of pressure on the government for financial benefit. It is also probable that the two parties engaged
in a closed–door meeting, involving a large sum of money. In having said this, the American magazine industry probably also lobbied the Canadian
government to a certain extent for their benefit. 3 Given that the Canadian magazine sales only constitute up to 11% of the total sales, it is highly

If the magazine was published in a country outside of Canada, extra tax should be charged. However, the most important issue is, in the end, which
party is receiving financial gain? Is it Canada or is it US? Even if the magazine was published in US, if the publishing company is Canadian–owned,
and the profit made is flowing into Canada to boost its economy, the magazine should be regarded as a Canadian magazine. Even if the writers are
non–Canadians and the contents of the magazine aren't about Canada, if the financial gain is returned to Canada, such magazine shouldn't be penalised.
At the end of the day, the deciding factor is, where is the money

Losing a Best Friend I pull up and rush inside. Would this be the last time I see my best friend of 10 years? The room is cold, plain, and white from
the floor to the ceilings. A tall and slender man in scrubs walks in and says that he would be brought into the room to see us in just a few minutes.
The man also explains how he would be dazed, due to the anesthesia from the surgery he had just undergone. The surgery revealed that my best
friend named Jack had cancer, and that he was too old to undergo chemo. They bring him in, his glassy eyes look at me and his furry tail wags. He
is extremely underweight and his ribs show from under his thick black and white coat. He seems happy for the first time in months. I later realize
this is because it is the first time he had not been in pain in so long. I say my goodbyes and rush out of the vet, tears streaming down my face. We
were not just losing a pet, but a family member. When we first started to notice a change in his energy level and eating habits my entire family

Themes In I Am Legend
Dystopian movies are based on an unpleasant society and often themes that play out in reality. Stories are built on universal storytelling elements and
literary devices as they intertwine with the central theme of the story. In the dystopian movie, 'I Am Legend' by Francis Lawrence the primary theme
of loss of humanity is delivered in a manner that reflects these elements. This movie is ultimately based on a disease that affected the population of
New York and the finding of the cure. Reaching the reader's emotions, symbolism, heroic scenarios and interesting ways in which a story is told
structure this movie and play off of the theme of loss in humanity. Sam, Robert Neville's dog symbolizes the reflection of loss in humanity with the
use of reaching the reader's emotions as Sam serves as Roberts primary companion in the movie "I Am Legend." This plays an important role within
the story because Sam belonged to Roberts daughter Marley. In a flashback Marley had given her father Sam in hopes of her caring for her Father
just before Marley and her Mother had passed away, in that moment Marley had exchanged her last words with the puppy. "Sam you take care of
Daddy," (Francis Lawrence) This was a form of her security blanket in hopes that Sam could secure her Father. This quote relates to the theme of loss

Themes in Austin Clarke's short story Canadian Experience...
"Oh, Canada, glorious and free!" these words from Canada's national anthem draw many immigrants to "the true North strong and free." Austin Clarke's
short story "Canadian Experience," portrays the struggles of a Barbadian man who has moved to Toronto, Ontario Canada – against the wishes of his
father – to find his fortune. Clarke does not name the principal character until closer to the end of the story. He has had to change who he is to make a
meaningful life in Canada. George struggles with the fact that "he is ready for bigger things" but is finding it difficult to reach his goal. When ones
race and morals are different, moving to a new country can be the most difficult transition of life.

And now his house does not have a name and he barely has one himself.
Since George has moved to Toronto, he has gone through so many changes against his own will, and it has made him depressed and bitter. He is
applying for a position at a bank and "he was always uncomfortable and impatient whenever he had to go into one." George has been forced to
change his morals and even his personal taste just to get ahead in Canada. He doesn't believe that men and women should cohabit if they are not
married and is "not a believer in the North American practice of having boys going to school with girls." He listens to a rock and roll station even
though he hates it just so he can find out what time it is. He plans to lie about his educational background at his job interview to impress them; where
as his education in Barbados is above average. His entire lifestyle has changed and his fear of failure drove him over the edge.
George does feel at times he is better and can accomplish more. While thinking about his job interview and the fact that it is only a "junior position,"
he feels "his necessity would make him bitter, but thankful." When he decides he needs to lie about his education at the interview he "laughs at own
cleverness of nuance and logic," and thinks that "no one is Toronto would know the difference." George used big words like decrepitude and often
corrected his actress roommate on

My Family Practices : Bonnie Liang And I Am Chinese Born...
I am Bonnie Liang and I am Chinese born Canadian. My family practices Buddhism, however, asides from the main festivities that are celebrated, I
have to admit that I do not know much about my own culture. My parents know more than me about the traditions that should be followed. Even so,
because we live in Canada now, there are also many Canadian customaries that have been included into our lives. Holidays, such as Christmas, are not
normally celebrated in the Chinese culture, but my Family has merged this holiday into it. New years is also supposedly celebrated according to the
traditional Chinese calendar, which varies on any day between January and February. My family used to only celebrate the new year according to the
Chinese calendar, but we now celebrate new years twice a year. The combination of my Chinese and Canadian background has developed a very
unique macrosystem (Bronfenbrenner) for me.
I have a large family which makes me very family oriented. On the contrary, because my family is so large, there are many times where it is
difficult for my whole family to be in the same place at once. The period of my toddlerhood, was right before my dad opened his own business. My
family size was smaller then, and it was easier to spend time together. However, once my dad started his own business, he was always working.
Overload of work caused him to have social withdrawal, a decline in social and emotional responsiveness, towards my sisters and I (Evans & Wachs,

Isolation In Richard Matheson's I Am Legend
The French novelist, Jules Verne stated; "solitude, isolation, are painful things and beyond human endurance." Here, Verne notes that being confined to
isolation is an experience that humans are incapable of performing. Humans are social creatures, who need company and interactions with others. In
Richard Matheson's dystopian fiction, I Am Legend, Robert Neville's isolation is the result of a pandemic. In I Am Legend, Robert Neville, the sole
survivor of a vampiric plague, is left alone. Neville is forced to pursue his life and live among the infected. He longs to find a cure or a companion
to fill the emptiness. But, the vampires pose a constant obstacle alongside his depression and alcoholism. He obtains book carries out research set with

A symbols is something used for or regarded as representing something else. The murals on the walls inside of Neville's house, for instance, are a
symbolic escape. Neither of the murals depicted any human beings, so they reinforced his feelings of isolation. The murals act as a "life force...[and
have]... a tangible, mind controlling potency..." Roberts house is another symbol. The house symbolizes protection and acts as a barricade. While the
vampires wait on the lawn Robert is protected within his safe haven. His home is the only connection he has to his deceased family members. Inside
his home he can research and continue to find the cause of the mutation that has turned the population into monsters. A last symbolic element is when
Robert finds the dog. The dog symbolizes hope that Neville is not alone and that there may be more beings that have survived like him. Shortly after
Neville befriends the dog it dies. Furthermore adding to the symbol; now creating the loss of hope. Although these symbols are different together they
convey the theme of alienation and the hope that Neville has of surviving by finding a

The Importance Of Immigrants In Canada
Just as many immigrants are forced to quit their language training early due to economic circumstances, many are also forced to abandon their country
of origin careers due to the economic hardship caused by the credential evaluation process. As Guo (2013) noted, "having had their education, work
experience, knowledge of English and/or French, and other abilities assessed in the application process, skilled immigrants presumably arrive in Canada
well–prepared to successfully establish themselves as permanent residents of Canada" (p. 34). Therefore, new immigrants expect to have their skills
put to use in Canada. However, "a large number of newly arrived doctors, engineers, lawyers, managers, and teachers end up unemployed or
underemployed, driving taxis or delivering pizzas in Canadian cities" (Subedi and Rosengberg, 2016, p. 58). One of the first things immigrants learn
through the British Columbia Newcomers' Guide (2017) is that, in addition to being required to upgrade their English skills to find employment, they
have to have their credentials assessed; for those who have non–regulated credentials, it could take anywhere from a few weeks to several months to
assess their credentials; if they have credentials in a regulated field, the assessment may cost several thousand dollars and the process could be even
longer (p. 78–79).
Not only is their credential recognition being challenged, but there is evidence suggesting that Immigrants experience discrimination when it

Blindness In King Lear
Now let's talk about the major theme that both stories possess would be blindness to the truth both in a physical and metaphorical aspect. King
Lear is a prime example of this trait as he was easily deceived by his two eldest daughters' lies, and because of this he was unable to see that
Cordelia truly loved him. As a result, the king banished his only loving daughter while he rewarded his two deceitful daughters as his successors.
Cordelia lacked to flatter her father, but that is just because she just loved the King so much that words could not express it. Failure to realize that
love is expressed through actions and not words would lead to both Cordelia and the King's demise. Gloucester is another example of a bad case of
blindness. Gloucester's

Aretha Franklin Analysis
Aretha Franklin – Respect
This song written and originally released artist Otis Redding in 1965. It wasn't until 1967 that this song became a hit when R&B Aretha Franklin
sang it. The song itself has the perfect features of a pop song and more importantly is was a song that was perfect for a political movement theme. One
of the most important messages that is being delivered is that a black and strong woman was seeking respect: "All I'm askin' Is for a little respect when
you get home (just a little bit)". Additionally, Aretha Franklin was showing her power towards men: "What you want, Baby, I got it".
The initial intent of the lyrics showed a bad dynamic between a relationship, but Aretha Franklin tweak and the emphasis on the word RESPECT sang
by the chorus led for the initiation and was an inspiration for the feminist movement.
Christina Aguilera – Can't Hold Us Down
Christina Aguilera released the song "Can't Hold Us Down" in 2003. The main idea of the song is to criticize thegender–related double standards.
While going through lyrics, Aguilera talks about the double standard of women being expected to be home and not talk while men could say
anything they want: "So what am I not supposed to have an opinion / Should I be quiet just because I'm a woman / Call me a b***h cos I speak
what's on my mind / I guess it's easier for you to swallow if I sat and smiled.". Additionally, she talks about the respect women should receive. On her

Descriptive Essay About My Family
My wife and I moved from chicago about two years ago after we got married and moves to Austin, Texas. We were in the country part of texas. We've
been married for about two years now. I really love her she means everything to me, we are very close we do everything together. My wife and I rode
our bikes every morning to get exercise or at least be active most of the time. One morning my wife couldn't ride with me because she had an
appointment, so I decided to ride by myself.
We would often ride past the large house on the corner of the long, windy country road. Every time I rode past it, I would glance up at the balcony at

"How far do you live?"
"I live about five miles."
"You can't walk that far, it is starting to get dark. Why don't you sleep here for tonight and then go back tomorrow when it is light?"
I peered outside the window, it was getting dark, and I was in the middle of nowhere without any street lamps. It would be quite dangerous to walk back.
"Ok that would be very kind of you, I hope I am no trouble?"
"No trouble at all, I will show you to your room, you can shower, and I'll get you some fresh clothes, then we will eat."
The woman showed me to my room, which was very large with a king size bed. I took off my sweaty clothes and took a shower.
When I came out of the shower there were some freshly pressed clothes laying on the bed. I lifted the clothes up with their coat hangers. There was a

A Hero Or A Monster?
Dayue Bai
Professor Greg McClure
Writing 39B
23 October 2016
A Hero or A Monster? As Noel Carroll states in his essay, The Nature of Horror, horror is one of the genres "in which ideally the emotive responses
of the audience run parallel to the emotion of characters" (Carroll 52). It is also true in Matheson's novel I Am Legend. By showing the protagonist's
tragic experience, the author deftly engenders the audience's sympathetic emotion to the main character, which initially makes the audience believe the
main character will be a hero to heal the world. However, the emergence of Ruth is the turning point of the novel. The relation and difference between
Ruth and the main character add doubts on the main character's humanity, because the main character is living in a world where creatures like Ruth is
the predominant type, rather than someone like him who is immune to the plague. The main character initially sees himself as a hero who tries to do
biological experiments to save the world. However, after Ruth's emergence, he knows that he is as supernatural monster immune to the bacteria in the
other creatures' eyes. The author manipulates the expectation of the audience by initially shaping the character as a hero and finally subverting the
expectation of the horror genre – suggesting the main character is the monster. As Tony Magistrale and Michael A. Morrison states in their essay,
Introduction to Dark Night's Dreaming, "The horror monster sometimes embodies the worst

The second book I chose to read this summer was I Am Legend by Richard Matheson. I Am Legend is a horror and science–fiction mashup which
follows the life of Robert Neville as the last man on Earth in a world now entirely populated of vampires due plague that struck in August 1976. Now,
for over five months, Robert has carried out his daily routine in the suburbs of Los Angeles of fixing what the human–turned–vampires had broken the
night before during their attacks. He collects garlic from the hothouse and hangs it around his home, replaces the broken planks that cover his
windows and doors, makes stakes, and even fixes the wiring of the generator every once in a while. Robert has to work diligently throughout the day

of her at first and tests her to be sure she isn't a bloodsucking monster, but when Robert is about to test her blood for the virus, she knocks him out and
leaves a note explaining who she is, how a new race of humans–hybrids are emerging, and that if he doesn't leave and go into hiding, these new humans
will find him and kill him. Robert thinks about leaving but doesn't because he's become too attached to the home he built and all he's been doing these
last two years. Soon, the men Ruth warned him about take him away. Before these men can execute Robert, Ruth slips him pills he can use to kill
himself with. Robert observes this new society though his cell window and realizes that he is the abnormality now. Robert takes the pills with his final

For me, it also creates a calming effect with the over–all atmosphere of the poem; although the narrator is tormented and suffering, they still appear
calm, as though reaching this decision of not wanting to live any more is almost freeing them; like making the final move towards 'Heaven' will be
good for them. It is in line 12 that I found another interesting use of written pause, with–
"Are strange – nay, rather, stranger than the rest."
–This creates a very conversational tone, and gives us the impression that they are confiding with us, or maybe talking to themselves and that we are
listening in on something personal, the way they correct themselves half way through a sentence/ line. It also draws us back to the feeling of total
honesty, as they are not perfecting their speech, just saying how they feel at that moment. I found I Am to be fairly modern in comparison to other
Romantic works of that era, and I believe the reason behind this is that Clare doesn't limit himself and his work here by keeping strictly to certain
methods of rhyme or line endings; for example the first stanza is 6 lines worth of alternating couplets, one couplet of which doesn't even completely
rhyme in terms of sound; 'lost' (end of line 2) and 'host' (end of line 4). This is more consonance than rhyme. The other two stanzas then go on in a
'Venus and Adonis' style with line endings

land Canada has, and our country hasn't been completely urbanized so we are a very clean country, with many freshwater lakes and Oceans on both

I Am Legend: Cultural Anxieties
I Am Legend addresses cultural anxieties that were occurring during the 1950s when Matheson wrote the novel. Neville is the last man on Earth and
sees everybody around him as Others, causing him to become misogynistic and indirectly racist. He descends into a mental state in which everybody
around him is better off dead because they are different.
The publication of I Am Legend coincided with the ruling of the Brown vs. Board Education case in 1954 when blacks became citizens with equal
rights (Patterson). One of the most prominent cultural anxieties the novel explores is racism. Neville sees the vampires as Others in a particularly
negative light. Although there are no references to their race in the text, Neville considers them as "black ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He kills the vampires that surround his house because they are dangerous, even though his house protects him. He kills off the sub–vampires in their

grave. He murders her by stabbing a cross into her heart as an act of mercy, out of necessity. Interestingly, when he finds the infected dog, he does
everything in his power to keep him alive. At this point, he is so desperate for companionship that he becomes obsessed with the dog. He also
keeps Ben Cortman alive, even though Cortman constantly yells at him and aggravates him. This is likely because he is the only person he has left
from the past world. Neville commits assisted suicide when he realizes there are no normal humans left on Earth, as he has become the Other. He
looks at "the new people of the earth... [and] he knew he did not belong to them." They are afraid of him; he has become a "terrible scourge even
worse than the disease they had come to live with" (95) and "an anathema and black terror to be destroyed"

The Role of Cordelia in King Lear
Although Cordelia appears in Act I, Scene I and disappears until Act IV, she has an enormous impact on the play as a whole. It is generally
acknowledged that the role played by Cordelia in King Lear is a symbolic one. She is a symbol of good amidst the evil characters within the play.
Since the play is about values which have been corrupted and must be restored, it is not surprising that the figure who directs the action must be
embodiment of those values which are in jeopardy – love, truth, pity, honour, courage and forgiveness. Cordelia's reply does not initiate the tragedy;
Lear's misguided question does that. Her "nothing" sets her father's tragic journey in motion. There is nothing wrong with her remarks.
Cordelia is a catalyst ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She is disgusted at her mercenary and calculating sisters, who deceive their father. She prefers to "love and be silent."
"Unhappy that I am, I cannot heave
My heart into my mouth: I love your majesty
According to my bond; now more now less." Cordelia personifies integrity, honesty and love throughout the play. By her very nature she is unable to
flatter or curry favour since dishonesty is not part of that nature. She represents the truth and it is against the backdrop of her loyalty and undying love
for her father that we measure Lear's arrogant behaviour. Cordelia's disinheritance and banishment are frighteningly disproportionate to the "sin" she
has committed in not flattering Lear. So too, is Kent's treatment at his hands. This concept of disproportionate consequences for actions done,
underlines how monstrous Lear's arrogance is, as well as his petty tyranny and his lack of self–knowledge. However, the horrors Lear himself will have
to suffer later in the play, as a result of his own folly, will also be out of all proportion to his initial blunder. Without Cordelia in the play, these
actions would not have been sparked in Lear. The rivals for Cordelia's hand are interestingly contrasted in Act I Scene I. Burgundy is mercenary,
refusing Cordelia's hand when she is offered "new–adopted to our hate" and without a dowry. France on the other hand is a sensitive,

For example, Oliver Hardy is compared to Ben Cortman to express his physical appearance and personality. Oliver Hardy is a large man who is
famous for his comedy. "Those old two–reelers he'd looked at with his projector. Cortman was almost a dead ringer for the roly–poly comedian. A little
less plump, that was all. Even the mustache was there now."(p.35) Cortman is being compared to Oliver because the author gives Ben a sense of humor
in the novel along with similar appearances like Cortman's mustache. Another allusion Richard Matheson uses is referring a woman named Ruth from
the bible to the character Ruth in the novel. Ruth is displayed in the bible as a woman who demonstrates loyalty to her husband, works in the field, and
is from a different society than the people around her. In comparison, Ruth from I Am Legend does her work in the field when she spies on Neville,
demonstrates loyalty to Neville by warning him that his life is being threatened, and is vampire instead of a

I woke up like every other day, it was a Monday. I don't like Mondays. I got dressed, as much as a fish can get dressed, and went down stairs to eat

"What are you going to do today in school son?" Father asked.
"Nothing much, what are you doing for work?" I replied.
"You know I can't talk about work so stop asking," Father said agitated. I got up and got in my limousine so Frank, my driver, could take me to school.
We went to pick up my best friend Gerald to give him a ride to school.

after all the only thing I know about his job is that he is the CEO of Reef Corporation.

"You know Mr. Rust is sensitive about his spines," I said,"he might puff up again." We both laughed. Suddenly there was a loud break sound. I looked

"Frank, what the crap is going on?" I asked.

  • 1. Allusion In I Am Legend Plot Summary In the novella I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, Robert is the last human on Earth that has been plagued by a disease that turns humans into vampires. This infection has ended with Neville alone in a house to fend and survive, in an undisclosed area of Los Angeles. It is mentioned several times through the novella that bombs could have caused the mutation of a disease and constant sandstorms attribute to the spreading of the infection throughout the areas of Los Angeles. In order to fend off the blood sucking vampires, Neville sets up perimeters of garlic, and mirrors to repel the vampires getting closer to his house. Additionally, Neville installs lights and boards his windows so the vamps can't get in without a fight. All of his... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What it really means, is that Neville, once on a hopeless island of despair, now has answers to his problems that he is facing. The author refers to Santa Claus because he is known to come to town and bring gifts, but instead, he brings answers to Neville. In addition, it refers to Robin Crusoe a character that was once trapped on a deserted island for a long period of time before being saved and getting trapped again. • 2. Summary Of ' The Night ' By F. Scott Fitzgerald As he was leaning closer to kiss me, we heard a knock on my front door. "Liz," I said to him. Leaving his side, I went to open the door. "Hi!" She kissed me on both cheeks and hand me a basket full of wines, crackers and cheeses she was holding. "Welcome home." She said, in way of greeting. "Darling, I had not seen you forever. I found you a hunk of a man. He is a gorgeous stockbroker with a great personality. I had been friends with your sister Mary for many years. We never got the chance to meet officially, but I had seen you and talked to you over the phone on several occasions, if I remember correctly. If you do not know this already, I am Isabel's closest and dearest friend. It is nice to meet you finally. I am so sorry for what I said earlier. I had no idea Isabel was seen anybody. Isabel and I had not seen each other for almost a month." Turning to me, he responded through gritted teeth, "I guess Isabel failed to mention me to her dearest friends." Walking into the kitchen with Liz basket, I placed it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

"She was a part of the Beaker Project...how did she get into our system in the first place?" gasped Aella. "Yippies," snorted Ad. Charles. "What is to become of the disloyal who took her payment?" frowned Aella. "Many will be detained for questioning and then sent to Hamartano. It will take time to track all those involved down; there are many spies among us," said Ad. Simpson. "What species is it she has taken?" asked Aella. "A Polatian, from the very planet she landed on over 500 years ago–a planet we nearly destroyed 20 years ago," sighed Ad. Simpson. "She landed 500 years ago. How is it possible?" questioned Aella. "I have found very little on the subject; their distress call said very little. It appeared that they were uncertain of the occurrence as well. It was as if they had taken a short cut through time. • 4. A Peaceful Day Of A Crummy Condo It was a peaceful day in a crummy condo. Kade and I were sitting in his room. An hour of AP Social Studies homework and 7th grade English homework in when a gust of wind came through the closed window. How do I put this, there was a noise. A very dim, subtle noise. A ZING,ssive, easygoing way, and the women said to us in a soft, calm voice, "We are your parents, we want to take you home". My brother and I were abandoned when he was 6 months old. One morning my father was making me chocolate chip pancakes and the next, I was alone. Imagine a five year old calling 911 saying your parents were abducted by aliens. That's what I wanted to believe. After I turned 10, I realized that every prayer wasn't worth it. My parents were never coming back. My brother and I were taken to Child Services the next day and we sent to Billy and Jen's house, me scared little 5 year old about to take on a world of responsibilities. We got home and Billy gave me a puppy and told me that she was there for me when they weren't and to take care of my brother. They left me there for a week, so I called Miss Tammy, the child services lady and she took me to a new home. We stayed there until I turned 13. It was a group home and they gave us food, shelter, and, educational opportunities. But no true compassion or a parent like figure. When I realized that we were never going to get the love we deserve, I took Kade in the middle of the night and found an abandoned condo. It had all the amenities that a ... • 5. I Am Original From A New Canadian Community Living in our complex society with some many beliefs, opinions, religions, biases, norms, cultures, limitations, doubts, and fears, etc. it is extremely easy for individuals to have a clash of conflicts among these attributes as they often contradict each other because two or more of these attributes are required for the daily routines. In this essay, I will be discussing my life and how it relates to my capitalist believes and how I can only achieve them by being a socialized member integrated into my new Canadian community. I'm original from Nigeria, a highly capitalist country, and I was also born into a family of capitalist, I was thought that the only way to true financial success it to be a capitalist. I like the idea and concept but there was a problem, I was not a socializing type of guy and I was shy and to be a success capitalist, socializing with people is extremely important. Knowing this fact motivated me to strive to improve my communication and people's skills but I still had problems being confident, I had problems expressing myself because I felt that showed a sign of weakness and I did not want to be known as the weak one. Approximately five years ago I decided to come to Canada to further my education, this decision will probably be one of the best decisions I have ever made, my knowledge, self–confidence, thinking, behavior and overall look on life improved exponentially. I have even been able to discover more interesting things about myself and want ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

During the human clinical trials part of the research, researchers took ten thousand and nine cancer patients and infected them all with the new strain of the measles virus. • 7. Essay On I Am Legend By Richard Matheson In I am Legend, Richard Matheson depicted Robert Neville as another man in another life before the plague broke out. He was a father and a husband. Your average joe working a blue collar job in the 1950 's, facts of life that change for him once the plague took hold of humanity. He created a safe–guarded sanctuary for himself within his own home fortified by garlic and crosses from the vampires who dominated the fallen world outside. Solitude was his only companion. Society provided Neville with support, structure, morals, and a community. With the fall of society, Neville priorities had changed. He had changed. Whilst the novel appears to focus heavily on alienation, Matheson perhaps also meant to depict another underlying plot theme. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Ruth questions him as to why he kill, he responds with: "Only to–to survive." (Matheson 166). An iconic lone ranger, refusing to surrender to a greater power comes into mind, an image created by culture, of a hero. Due to Neville 's perspective, people want to identify with heroes like Neville and oppose villains like the vampires or the Soviet Union. Cohen argued, monsters have the ability to illuminate the secrets of the era. Monsters may have the ability to shed light on secrets of the era. Throughout many instances in history, both sides of war believe they are right. Both sides ultimately demonize one another. However, history is ultimately written by its victor, as one side will eventually win. Only one will go on to tell the 'story ' to the world. The plague had devastated the human population and the vampires overrun the world now. Robert Neville, being on the other side of this war, had lost. As the by–product of this new world, he challenged the vampires ' views. In Cohen's first thesis, the monsters are said to be born out of a particular "time, a feeling, and a place" and exist as "pure culture". The monsters, being a product of its time, represent the views of the people of that era, but they can also challenge the public 's view. Robert was their monster. • 8. Parenting Styles In I Am Sam While watching "I Am Sam", Baumrind's parenting styles are displayed in the main characters. The parenting style Sam best represents is authoritative. Sam encourages Lucy to be the best she can be while still enforcing rules. Lucy pretends she cannot read the word "different" because she does not want to progress without Sam, and he forces her to read the word. Sam also knows what is right and wrong and enforces this on Lucy. When Lucy climbed out of the window and walked to Sam's new apartment, he took her right back to her foster family's house. Sam may have the mental capacity of a seven year–old, but he is a good parent in my eyes. Another parenting style shown in "I Am Sam" is neglectful parenting. Sam's lawyer, Rita is always busy with her practice and does not spend enough time with her son, resulting in him being uninterested in her. Rita's husband is never around and is unfaithful to Rita. Rita not having enough time for her son and her husband leaving creates an unstable environment for her son. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead, the ending scene of "I Am Sam" was Lucy playing in a soccer game with her father, Sam as a referee and Randy with her husband in the stands. The film ends with unanswered questions, and makes you wonder what had happened with Sam and Lucy. Many questions are unanswered in the final scene. Did Sam get custody? Did Randy and her husband adopt Lucy and Sam has visitations? Based on the ending of the film I can only assume that the court made the decision for Sam, Randy and her husband to receive joint custody of Lucy. I am satisfied with this ending because Sam gets to be with his daughter who he loves and Lucy has a mother figure in her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This quote was spoken by the second president of the united states and revered Patriot leader, Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson is trying to express how a person's true character and personality is expressed through their actions and how they live their lives, so if someone wants to truly know who they are inside, the best indications comes from their actions and how they impacted others. One excellent way to reflect upon one's inner self is with the Reflected Best Self Exerciseв„ў (RBSEв„ў) developed by the University of Michigan. This exercise utilizes stories collected from people in one's life to help them understand who they are and what they are like when they are at their very best. This exercise helps to highlight a person's strength and to distill confidence into their character. It helps a person to explore who they genuinely are and to be able to know their own personality a little bit better. Lear intends to divide his kingdom among his three daughters, demands public declaration of their love and asks them, "Tell me, my daughters/ Which of you shall we say doth love us most,/ That we our largest bounty may extend/ Where nature doth with merit challenge"(1.1.52–58). Lear wants his daughters to express their admiration for him. His pride demands it. He will award the greatest portion of his kingdom to the daughter who loves him most. • 14. Nature In King Lear English poet and playwright, William Shakespeare is universally considered the greatest dramatist of all time. One of these is his play titled "King Lear" which is centred on the Renaissance period where the human being was the focus of central importance rather than divine beings. Unlike his other plays, Shakespeare chooses to abstain from leaving the play with Lear realising that his personal tragedy is his own doing but continues by making him see things in a different perspective. Furthermore, King Lear represents the merging of self and other– what it means to be human. For instance, this merge of self and other has been brought to life in the play; however it cannot survive at the time and has to be buried. My essays intent will be to ... He urges powerful men to learn about hardship and what it feels like to suffer and not have anyone to share your troubles with. He also longs for the powerful men to give themselves a chance to be in the shoes of the poor and maybe give back to them and support them and share the excess of wealth with them so that the world can be a better place with equality. The Interpretation Of A Human Edmund Carnevale Mister Lister English Survey of British Literature 30 October 2016 The Interpretation of a Human How do a creature 's actions portray them as human or monstrous? In what way do those who are not human act or look and if not human, then what are they? In Mary Shelley 's Frankenstein, it is observed that humans are characterized by showing compassion towards others and having character flaws, but Victor's creature's grotesque physical appearance causes society to abandon him. Humans will always have flaws and make mistakes, and this makes them human, but also shows one of the weaknesses that humans have. When Victor has destroyed the second creature in spite of his first creation, the malevolent creature shows up and foreshadows that something bad will happen on Victor's wedding night. This leads Victor to narrate, "The prospect did not move me to fear; yet when I thought of my beloved Elizabeth,–of her tears and endless sorrow, when she should find her lover so barbarously snatched from her" (Shelly 156). Victor thinks about himself and is blind to the notion that his wife might possibly die. This proves that Victor's display of self centeredness is a trait that makes him human. After Victor had discovered that his creation had been the real murderer of his relative, William, he is shocked to find out that his cousin Justine Moritz had been accused and he says, "My tale was not one to announce publicly; its astounding horror would be looked upon as madness ... • 18. Case Study: The Canadian Magazine Dispute The Canadian Magazine Dispute 1 It is highly probable that the desire to protect the culture of Canada by the Canadian Government was not genuine. This is because the magazine industry is only a small portion of the entire Canadian mass media. Hence, the situation leads us to question, what is the hidden intention and the actual motive behind Canadian Government backing its magazine industry? If the Canadian Government was genuine about protecting its culture from US, I believe that there are more effective and logical ways to protect the culture, instead of focusing to protect only the magazine industry. 2 It is highly likely that the Canadian Government and its ministers of trade and culture were lobbied by the Canadian magazine industry. The magazine industry probably put a lot of pressure on the government for financial benefit. It is also probable that the two parties engaged in a closed–door meeting, involving a large sum of money. Stories are built on universal storytelling elements and literary devices as they intertwine with the central theme of the story. In the dystopian movie, 'I Am Legend' by Francis Lawrence the primary theme of loss of humanity is delivered in a manner that reflects these elements. This movie is ultimately based on a disease that affected the population of New York and the finding of the cure. Reaching the reader's emotions, symbolism, heroic scenarios and interesting ways in which a story is told structure this movie and play off of the theme of loss in humanity. Sam, Robert Neville's dog symbolizes the reflection of loss in humanity with the use of reaching the reader's emotions as Sam serves as Roberts primary companion in the movie "I Am Legend." This plays an important role within the story because Sam belonged to Roberts daughter Marley. In a flashback Marley had given her father Sam in hopes of her caring for her Father just before Marley and her Mother had passed away, in that moment Marley had exchanged her last words with the puppy. "Sam you take care of Daddy," (Francis Lawrence) This was a form of her security blanket in hopes that Sam could secure her Father. The Importance Of Immigrants In Canada Just as many immigrants are forced to quit their language training early due to economic circumstances, many are also forced to abandon their country of origin careers due to the economic hardship caused by the credential evaluation process. As Guo (2013) noted, "having had their education, work experience, knowledge of English and/or French, and other abilities assessed in the application process, skilled immigrants presumably arrive in Canada well–prepared to successfully establish themselves as permanent residents of Canada" (p. 34). Therefore, new immigrants expect to have their skills put to use in Canada. However, "a large number of newly arrived doctors, engineers, lawyers, managers, and teachers end up unemployed or underemployed, driving taxis or delivering pizzas in Canadian cities" (Subedi and Rosengberg, 2016, p. 58). One of the first things immigrants learn through the British Columbia Newcomers' Guide (2017) is that, in addition to being required to upgrade their English skills to find employment, they have to have their credentials assessed; for those who have non–regulated credentials, it could take anywhere from a few weeks to several months to assess their credentials; if they have credentials in a regulated field, the assessment may cost several thousand dollars and the process could be even longer (p. 78–79). King Lear is a prime example of this trait as he was easily deceived by his two eldest daughters' lies, and because of this he was unable to see that Cordelia truly loved him. As a result, the king banished his only loving daughter while he rewarded his two deceitful daughters as his successors. Cordelia lacked to flatter her father, but that is just because she just loved the King so much that words could not express it. It wasn't until 1967 that this song became a hit when R&B Aretha Franklin sang it. The song itself has the perfect features of a pop song and more importantly is was a song that was perfect for a political movement theme. One of the most important messages that is being delivered is that a black and strong woman was seeking respect: "All I'm askin' Is for a little respect when you get home (just a little bit)". Additionally, Aretha Franklin was showing her power towards men: "What you want, Baby, I got it". • 29. A Hero Or A Monster? Dayue Bai Professor Greg McClure Writing 39B 23 October 2016 A Hero or A Monster? As Noel Carroll states in his essay, The Nature of Horror, horror is one of the genres "in which ideally the emotive responses of the audience run parallel to the emotion of characters" (Carroll 52). It is also true in Matheson's novel I Am Legend. By showing the protagonist's tragic experience, the author deftly engenders the audience's sympathetic emotion to the main character, which initially makes the audience believe the main character will be a hero to heal the world. However, the emergence of Ruth is the turning point of the novel. The relation and difference between Ruth and the main character add doubts on the main character's humanity, because the main character is living in a world where creatures like Ruth is the predominant type, rather than someone like him who is immune to the plague. The main character initially sees himself as a hero who tries to do biological experiments to save the world. However, after Ruth's emergence, he knows that he is as supernatural monster immune to the bacteria in the other creatures' eyes. The author manipulates the expectation of the audience by initially shaping the character as a hero and finally subverting the expectation of the horror genre – suggesting the main character is the monster. As Tony Magistrale and Michael A. Morrison states in their essay, Introduction to Dark Night's Dreaming, "The horror monster sometimes embodies the worst ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is in line 12 that I found another interesting use of written pause, with– "Are strange – nay, rather, stranger than the rest." –This creates a very conversational tone, and gives us the impression that they are confiding with us, or maybe talking to themselves and that we are listening in on something personal, the way they correct themselves half way through a sentence/ line. It also draws us back to the feeling of total honesty, as they are not perfecting their speech, just saying how they feel at that moment. I found I Am to be fairly modern in comparison to other Romantic works of that era, and I believe the reason behind this is that Clare doesn't limit himself and his work here by keeping strictly to certain methods of rhyme or line endings; for example the first stanza is 6 lines worth of alternating couplets, one couplet of which doesn't even completely rhyme in terms of sound; 'lost' (end of line 2) and 'host' (end of line 4). This is more consonance than rhyme. The other two stanzas then go on in a 'Venus and Adonis' style with line endings

Isabel and I had not seen each other for almost a month." Turning to me, he responded through gritted teeth, "I guess Isabel failed to mention me to her dearest friends." Walking into the kitchen with Liz basket in hand, I placed it on the kitchen counter and began to review its content. While looking at the basket, I uttered, "Liz, Brian was just leaving." Walking toward me, he placed his arm around my waist and kissed me on my temple as he turned to Liz. "I had no idea Isabel's confidant was coming over for dinner. I hope you do not mind me joining you. I want to get to know my girl's best friend. After all, we are going to be seen a lot of each other. Aren't we, Isabel?" Putting some space between us, I muttered through gritting teeth. "We were hoping to have a girls–night–in." Mockingly, he replied, "This meeting must have been scheduled last minutes. We were just in DC, and if I remember correctly, we were having dinner with friends tonight." Irritated, I gazed at Liz who was staring at Brian with a captivated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There is a sense of unity, a sense of security, and most of us have a distinct sense of national identity. We have fresh air and clean land, and we are a free country, where we can speak our minds without fear. Many Provincial and National parks have been put in place to help preserve all of the natural land Canada has, and our country hasn't been completely urbanized so we are a very clean country, with many freshwater lakes and Oceans on both borders. When immigrants come to become Canadian citizens, they are still encouraged to maintain ties with their birthplace. They're encouraged to keep relationships with their family, keep their traditions and culture, and relish the freedom in Canada. We have defects like any other country, but as you start spending more time around the country, it becomes easy to sight that Canada is definitely a peaceful country. One that I'm proud to live in. This country, according to the 2016 Global Peace Index, is the 8th most peaceful country in the world, just behind Switzerland (7) and Czech Republic (6). The index looks at a variety of different measures, including military spending, rate of violent crime, possibility of violent demonstrations, deaths from conflicts with bordering countries, along with the political terror scale. But to Canadians, you don't need a some number to know we're a peaceful crowd. We've never had a colossal on home soil, and are known for being a peacekeeping country. This is why many seek refuge in Canada, and we have many immigrants coming in every year. Canada's not perfect, but it's making ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The girls were taking Lynx out for a walk, and the hyper lynx was enjoying every moment of it. Ever since Lynx's adoption, Sam has been in a happier mood, smiling a bit more than she usually does. Sam's mood improved further when it started snowing in Station Square just yesterday. A lot of schools and work had to cancel, so children are outside making snowmen and throwing snowballs. Laughter echoed throughout the streets and sidewalks as Sam, Flower and Lynx strolled right by them. Everyone seemed to match the children's mood. Sam and Flower grinned from ear to ear. "I remember you guys– er, gals." Flower giggled. "I, uh,– well it's been awhile, eh?" Sam however was more interested in what he was doing in the alley in the beginning of Winter's visit rather than recalling memories of their meeting. "What happened to you? How long have you been in the alley?" Storm thought of a moment. "I dunno how long I was here. Feels like a whole month. As f'r what happened to me, well, uh, not much. I just got kicked out of the Babylon Rogues." "You what!" Sam unintentionally yelled. Flower and Storm stared at her, and Sam flashed an apologetic look. She waved for Storm to go on and after a few moments of planning what he's going to say he sighed. "I didn't do anything wrong to get kicked out– nothing I can think of. I uh just you know, quit." "Why?" Flower asked. "'Cause I didn't like bein' here." Storm lowered his head. "I didn't have any problem with how things were runnin' before– stealin' things and us breakin' the law– but, uh I was doin' some thinkin' and I knew– I decided– that this life ain't for me." • 36. I Am Legend: Cultural Anxieties I Am Legend addresses cultural anxieties that were occurring during the 1950s when Matheson wrote the novel. Neville is the last man on Earth and sees everybody around him as Others, causing him to become misogynistic and indirectly racist. He descends into a mental state in which everybody around him is better off dead because they are different. The publication of I Am Legend coincided with the ruling of the Brown vs. Board Education case in 1954 when blacks became citizens with equal rights (Patterson). One of the most prominent cultural anxieties the novel explores is racism. Neville sees the vampires as Others in a particularly negative light. Although there are no references to their race in the text, Neville considers them as "black ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He kills the vampires that surround his house because they are dangerous, even though his house protects him. He kills off the sub–vampires in their homes because they are better off dead and he is sparing them of their fate. Neville even kills his wife when she comes back as a vampire from her grave. He murders her by stabbing a cross into her heart as an act of mercy, out of necessity. Interestingly, when he finds the infected dog, he does everything in his power to keep him alive. At this point, he is so desperate for companionship that he becomes obsessed with the dog. He also keeps Ben Cortman alive, even though Cortman constantly yells at him and aggravates him. This is likely because he is the only person he has left from the past world. Neville commits assisted suicide when he realizes there are no normal humans left on Earth, as he has become the Other. He looks at "the new people of the earth... [and] he knew he did not belong to them." They are afraid of him; he has become a "terrible scourge even worse than the disease they had come to live with" (95) and "an anathema and black terror to be destroyed" ... • 37. The Role of Cordelia in King Lear Although Cordelia appears in Act I, Scene I and disappears until Act IV, she has an enormous impact on the play as a whole. It is generally acknowledged that the role played by Cordelia in King Lear is a symbolic one. She is a symbol of good amidst the evil characters within the play. Since the play is about values which have been corrupted and must be restored, it is not surprising that the figure who directs the action must be embodiment of those values which are in jeopardy – love, truth, pity, honour, courage and forgiveness. Cordelia's reply does not initiate the tragedy; Lear's misguided question does that. Her "nothing" sets her father's tragic journey in motion. There is nothing wrong with her remarks. Cordelia is a catalyst ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She is disgusted at her mercenary and calculating sisters, who deceive their father. She prefers to "love and be silent." "Unhappy that I am, I cannot heave My heart into my mouth: I love your majesty According to my bond; now more now less." Cordelia personifies integrity, honesty and love throughout the play. By her very nature she is unable to flatter or curry favour since dishonesty is not part of that nature. She represents the truth and it is against the backdrop of her loyalty and undying love for her father that we measure Lear's arrogant behaviour. Cordelia's disinheritance and banishment are frighteningly disproportionate to the "sin" she has committed in not flattering Lear. So too, is Kent's treatment at his hands. This concept of disproportionate consequences for actions done, underlines how monstrous Lear's arrogance is, as well as his petty tyranny and his lack of self–knowledge. However, the horrors Lear himself will have to suffer later in the play, as a result of his own folly, will also be out of all proportion to his initial blunder. Without Cordelia in the play, these actions would not have been sparked in Lear. The rivals for Cordelia's hand are interestingly contrasted in Act I Scene I. Burgundy is mercenary, refusing Cordelia's hand when she is offered "new–adopted to our hate" and without a dowry. France on the other hand is a sensitive, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Literary Symbolism In 'I Am Legend' I Am Legend Essay What would a person do if their children, spouse, friends, and everything they love or ever wanted were taken away? I Am Legend by Richard Matheson features the main character Robert Neville, the last survivor of the human race, who wants to have companionship, but the growing population of vampires makes his dream impossible. Meanwhile, Neville defends himself from the growing vampire plague by killing the infected vampires. He receives his wish of companionship when a woman named Ruth came into his life, but he soon will find out that she is vampire. The literary elements symbolism, irony, similes, allusions, and conflict all portray the themes of the novel. The main topics of the novel are normalcy,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, Oliver Hardy is compared to Ben Cortman to express his physical appearance and personality. Oliver Hardy is a large man who is famous for his comedy. "Those old two–reelers he'd looked at with his projector. Cortman was almost a dead ringer for the roly–poly comedian. A little less plump, that was all. Even the mustache was there now."(p.35) Cortman is being compared to Oliver because the author gives Ben a sense of humor in the novel along with similar appearances like Cortman's mustache. Another allusion Richard Matheson uses is referring a woman named Ruth from the bible to the character Ruth in the novel. Ruth is displayed in the bible as a woman who demonstrates loyalty to her husband, works in the field, and is from a different society than the people around her. In comparison, Ruth from I Am Legend does her work in the field when she spies on Neville, demonstrates loyalty to Neville by warning him that his life is being threatened, and is vampire instead of a ... • 39. A Short Story : A Story? I woke up like every other day, it was a Monday. I don't like Mondays. I got dressed, as much as a fish can get dressed, and went down stairs to eat breakfast. It was just me, my father, and many maids. My mother had died in child birth. I don't see my father much except the occasional breakfast. "I still can't get over how rich you are Gary. Can your dad buy me a limo?" Gerald joked. It made me uncomfortable talking about my father's wealth, after all the only thing I know about his job is that he is the CEO of Reef Corporation. "Reef Corporation sales must be higher than Mr. Rust's spines,"Gerald said. Mr. Rust is a longspined porcupine fish. "You know Mr. Rust is sensitive about his spines," I said,"he might puff up again." We both laughed. Suddenly there was a loud break sound. I looked out the window and the car had stopped. "Frank, what the crap is going on?" I asked. "Would you kiss your mother with that mouth?" Gerald said. "This isn't a time for joking," I replied. "Calm down,"Frank said," I just slammed the brakes so I wouldn't hit the deer." I looked outside the window and there were no deer. Frank got out of the car ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
