This document discusses common sports injuries and first aid treatments. It defines first aid as immediate temporary care for an injured or ill person when medical assistance is not available. Some common sports injuries discussed are sprains, which are ligament tears or stretches; heat exhaustion from fluid loss during sweating; knee injuries; fractures which are bone breaks; and dislocations where bones at a joint are separated. First aid treatments for sprains include RICE - rest, ice, compression and elevation. For heat exhaustion, lying the victim down with feet elevated and giving electrolyte fluids is recommended.
2. PRE-TEST
Rearrange the jumbled letters to form the word that is described in each
item. Write your answer in the space provide before the each number.
SRISAPN 1. This is the result of overstretching or tearing of the
legaments.
SASRTIN 2. This is the result of overstretching of the muscles or
tendons.
NEKE INJURIES 3. any injury that interferes with how the knee joint
moves.

3. LESSON
•There are common injuries that may happen during
sports and physical activities. In this phase, we will
learn to provide possible ways to alleviate the
suffering and apply appropriate first and
techniques. From here, follow up activities will be
given to elicit your tentative understanding.
4. FIRST AID

medical assistance is not available or delayed.
6. SPRAIN
•Is a stretch or a tear of a ligament,
the band connective tissue that
joints the end of the bone with
another.
7. FIRST AID FOR SPRAIN
1. Remove any clothing or jewelry around the joint.
2. Apply cold compress at once.
3. Elevate the affected joint.
4. The victim physician may recommended an over-
the-counter anti-inflammatory medication (aspirin,
ibuprofen) appropriate for the victim’s general
health.
8. HEAT EXHAUSTION
• Is a response to heat characterized by fatigue, weakness
and collapse due to inadequate intake of water to
compensate for loss of fluid during sweating.
TWO TYPES OF EXHAUSTION
1. Water depletion
2. Salt depletion
9. FIRST AID FOR HEAT
EXHAUSTION
1. Have the victim lie down with his/her feet elevated.
2. Keep the victim cool.
3. Give him/her electrolyte beverages to sip or make a salted drink.
4. Monitor the victim for sign of shock.
5. If the victim start seizures, protect him/her from injury and give
first aid for convulsions.
6. If the victim lose consciousness, give first aid for
unconsciousness.
10. KNEE INJURIES
• Because of its complex structure weight-bearing capacity,
the knee is the most commonly injured join. Each year,
more than 5.5 million people visit orthopedic surgeons
for knee problems.
• Knee injuries can result from a blow or twist to the knee,
from improper landing after a jump or from running to
hard, too much or without proper warm-up.
11. FRACTURES
• A fracture is a break in the bone that can occur from
either a quick, one-time injury to the bone (acute
fracture) or from repeated stress to the bone over time
(stress fracture).
• The most common symptom of a stress fracture is pain at
the site that worsen with weight bearing activities.
Tenderness and swelling often accompany the pain. This
is very important for the coaches to recognize and refer
the athlete to the trainers or the team physicians.
12. DISLOCATION
• When the two bones that come together to forma joint
become separated, the joints is described as being
dislocated. Contact sports such as football, basketball and
lacrosse, as well as high impact sports that can result in
excessive stretching or falling, cause the majority of
dislocations. A dislocated joint is an emergency situation
that requires medical treatments.
