Abstract The topic 1.1. What is cultural heritage? is the first
         and introductive topic to Module 1 “Values and
         Awareness“. This presentation explains what is
         cultural heritage, what are its categories and
         introduces you to the diversity and the components of
         the most ubiquitous part of cultural heritage: built (or
         architectural) heritage.

                            Cultural Heritage:
                                  What is it?
                    “The concept of an historic monument embraces
                   not only the single architectural work but also the
                   urban or rural setting in which is found the
                   evidence of a particular civilization, a significant
                   development or an historic event. This applies not
                   only to great works of art but also to more modest
                   works of the past which have acquired cultural
                   significance with the passing of time.”

                                           HERITAGE
CULTURAL HERITAGE
 Tangible heritage:
    Movable cultural heritage
    (paintings, sculptures, coins, manuscripts, etc.)
    Immovable cultural heritage (monuments, archaeological sites, and
    so on)
    Underwater cultural heritage (shipwrecks, underwater ruins and
    cities and so on)
 Intangible heritage (oral tradition, performing arts, rituals, and so on)

NATURAL HERITAGE (natural sites with cultural aspects such as
cultural landscapes, physical, biological or geological formations, and so
on)

1.1.2.2 Tangible Heritage
                                                          However, often painting
                                                          is an integral part of the
                                                          building. Not only it is
                                                          painted on the plaster of
                                                          its walls or ceilings, but it
                                                          can be part of its
                                                          architecture, extending
                                                          visually and “virtually”
                                                          its interior space, like in
                                                          this example of Trompe-
                                                          l'œil painting in villa
                                                          Foscarini-
                                                          Rossi, Veneto, Italy
                                                          (columns and other
                                                          three-dimentional
                                                          elements are painted on
                                                          the ceiling)
