A sense of belonging is a basic human need
• Neuroscience: Physical pain and Social pain use the same
neurological pathways
• The language we use to describe social pain is the same as the
language we use to describe physical pain
PROBLEM STATEMENT
• Distance education students traditionally work on their
own and in isolation (Williams, 2006, Badu-Nyarko, 2010,
Boulos et al, 2005)
• Interaction treatments into DE courses impacts
positively on student learning (Abrami et al 2011)
• Research indicates that cooperative learning
strategies enhance student performance (Johnson &
Johnson, 2009)
Learning as a social process
(McConnell, 2006)
Knowledge is developed and negotiated between members
Intertwined with personal and group identity
Palloff and Pratt (2005) suggest that the formation of online learning
communities is what distinguishes online learning from simple
correspondence courses, and leads to enhanced student outcomes
and satisfaction.

  • 3. A sense of belonging is a basic human need • Neuroscience: Physical pain and Social pain use the same neurological pathways • The language we use to describe social pain is the same as the language we use to describe physical pain
  • 4. PROBLEM STATEMENT • Distance education students traditionally work on their own and in isolation (Williams, 2006, Badu-Nyarko, 2010, Boulos et al, 2005) • Interaction treatments into DE courses impacts positively on student learning (Abrami et al 2011) • Research indicates that cooperative learning strategies enhance student performance (Johnson & Johnson, 2009)

Learning as a social process (McConnell, 2006) Knowledge is developed and negotiated between members Intertwined with personal and group identity Palloff and Pratt (2005) suggest that the formation of online learning communities is what distinguishes online learning from simple correspondence courses, and leads to enhanced student outcomes and satisfaction. The challenge is for educators to create a learning environment that supports the diverse identities and experiences of students and foster constructive and respectful dialogue and exchange

Exposing students to differing points of view by means of co-operative learning • DE students are dispersed in terms of geography, age cohorts, gender, and therefore differing points of view in terms of politics, world views and many more • Exposing them to these differences in a structured, positive and constructive way is crucial
