Paolo Roversi was born in Ravenna, Italy in 1946. He lived and worked in Paris for over 35 years
and currently still lives in Paris. Roversi's interest in photography started during a trip to Spain in
1964. After the vacation Roversi set up a darkroom in his cellar with another amature, the local
postman battista Minguzzi, and they both began developing and printing their own black and white
work. In 1972 he was invited to Paris, at the invitation of Peter Knapp, a renowned Art Director for
Elle. He started under Peter Knapp as a photojournalist, but soon found his focus would be better
put towards fashion photography. He started working as a reporter for Huppert Agency but through
his connections he began to inch his way into fashion photography. ... Show more content on

Another reason I chose Paolo Roversi was because when I saw his photo's they immediately talked
to me more than any other photographs. The first one's I saw looked like headshots and the models
had so much emotion in their expression which is something that a lot of models and photographers
now seem to forget. I also loved the choice in lighting and when I finally stumbled upon The Great
Illusion photoshoot I fell even more in love. The use of the shadows was amazing and told a story
that wouldn't otherwise be told. One of my favorite things to play with to create effects is light, so
him playing with light to create those amazing photos made my decision to do a report on him

The Theme Of Class In Ship Breaker By Paolo Bacigalupi
In Paolo Bacigalupi's novel Ship Breaker (2010), Bacigalupi suggests that people are faced with
moral or immoral decisions on a daily basis and that what people decide determine their character.
Bacigalupi backs up his claim by telling a story of a young man in a future society having to make a
monumental choice that could set himself up for the future or that could save a complete stranger's
life. By throwing different variables at the main character, Bacigalupi puts Nailer in sticky situations
in order to highlight the everyday decisions we make that has an important effect on our character.
Bacigalupi's target audience is teens and young adults that he speaks to in a calm, relaxed tone and
he builds a friendly relationship with. Throughout the novel, Bacigalupi develops a theme of class
difference in society, creates a magnificent setting, and does a stunning job in enhancing his main
character.
In Ship Breaker, many themes are present, but the theme of differences in class within society
emerged over all others. From the very start of the novel, Nailer was a poor ship breaker who didn't
know if he would have enough food for dinner. To elaborate, Nailer's only chance at food for the
night was if he met his quota for the day, "'I'm not going to meet my quota,' Nailer said. 'Just keep
lookin,'' replied Bapi" (Bacigalupi 23). Despite the differences, Nailer eventually teams up with
Sadna, a privileged girl that came from the upper echelons of society: "'Yes, I've got a private
chopper we can take down to Orleans,' exclaimed Sadna narcissistically" (Bacigalupi 159). The
author included this miniscule detail to show that no matter where you began at, you can eventually
reach the top. This added to the plot because it showed the audience that it doesn't mean anything
where you came from, but you can still be successful. Also, the theme was further supported by the
fact that micro societies emerged in Nailer's hometown of Bright Sands Beach and in Orleans.
To support the development of class difference, Bacigalupi creates a stunning setting that
encapsulates everything the theme has to offer in Ship Breaker. Bacigalupi uses the exposition of the
novel to set the scene of Bright Sands Beach, a poor, scrap metal

Paolo Caliari Research Paper
Paolo was born in the city of Verona in 1528. Paolo's father worked as a stonecutter and his mother
was the daughter of a nobleman called Caliari. Although Paolo's mother was an illegitimate daughter
of the nobleman, Caliari, Paolo still adopted that as his name, becoming Paolo Caliari. Paolo was
nicknamed "Veronese" after his birthplace, Verona. As a young boy, Veronese was trained as a
stonecutter, like his father, but when he was fourteen Antonio Badile, a painter, began training
Veronese as his apprentice. Because of Badile, Veronese gained a passion for paintings that included
people and architecture mixed together, as well as a basic painting technique. Aside from Badile,

His interest in the luxurious quality of fabrics can be seen in the painting, The Finding of Moses.
According to biblical history, the event depicted in the painting happened in Egypt over three
thousand years earlier than the painting was created, but Veronese placed the painting in northern
Italy by placing the Alps and a Tyrolian town in the background. The people in the painting were
modern for his time, a sixteenth–century princess, as well as her court. The basis of the painting is
Moses's mother hiding him when the Pharaoh is putting all of the first–born sons in Israel to death.
The painting's princess finds Moses in a basket in the river. Although baby Moses is the reason for
the painting, the viewer's eyes are lead to the face of the princess by the flowing colors and
spiraling, twisting figures. Veronese leads the viewer's eyes along various paths, but they always
return to the face of the princess. The viewer's eyes are drawn to her because "her light complexion
is set off by the dark foliage behind her". Some critics believe that the use of light is contradictory to
the use of natural light that was admired by Renaissance

Comparing Humans And The Environment In Pump Six By Paolo...
In the world we live in the environment and those who live in it are all influenced by one another.
These influences can often be positive like when a bird helps to pollinate a flower or negative like
when humans dump toxins and other chemicals into oceans or rivers, which then kill the animals
living in it and also the animals that consume those sea animals. Nowadays humans have more of a
negative affect on the environment rather than a positive one, however some people are trying to
turn things around before things get too bad. In Ecotopia by Ernest Callenbach, "Pump Six" by
Paolo Bacigalupi, and the short film Mr. Green we see how the relationship between humans and the
environment has impacted one another.
Ecotopia is set in a futuristic period where Washington, Oregon, and Northern California have
seceded from the rest of the United States and have formed their own country called Ecotopia.
Ecotopia is and ecofriendly country and people there are more connected to their environment. "But
what matters most in the aspiration to live in balance with nature, 'walk lightly on the land,' treat the
earth as a mother" (p.29 Callenbach). This quote goes hand in hand with many of the laws that were
put in place by the Ecotopian government, like what materials ... Show more content on

Giovanni Di Paolo
Giovanni Di Paolo's (and workshop) circa 1420 through 1482 altarpiece Virgin and Child with
Saints is beautifully preserved and miraculously intact. The three main panels depict St. Nicolas of
Bari, Virgin and Child with a kneeling Monk, St. Galganus and the Angel Gabriel. Other smaller
panels show St. Dominic, St. Bartholomew, St. Francis of Assisi and St. John, while the three
pinnacles show Christ flanked by Gabriel and by the Virgin of Annunciation set in golden
backgrounds. This work of art from the Early Renaissance period visually creates a feeling of awe
and reflection, while holding both a distinctive visual style and slight narrative. With heavy gilded
edges surrounding the separate panels and adorning the top of the altarpiece, this painting, created
using tempera and gold leaf, seems to cast a glow on the wall holding it, bringing about a holy
charisma. The warm colors and golden edges bring a welcoming feeling, even though the characters
themselves don't appear to seem very happy (probably to give a foreboding edge of respect). The
detail on the framing evokes a sense of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Paintings of the Christ Child and Mary were very common in this time period, yet the one is
remarkable to view fully intact and restored. The Virgin and Child with Saints was created
sometime between 1420 and 1482, a window that perfectly classifies it as being part of the Italian
Early Renaissance. Many of the decisions made while creating this piece fit right into this time
period, while others do not. Of those decisions, the creating of an altarpiece itself, the content
chosen to depict, and the way the content is presented and illustrated, and how similar this piece is
to others in the era all best prove that this piece is contextually an Early Renaissance work of

De Jaeger And Di Paolo
In Participatory Sense–Making, authors Hanne De Jaeger and Ezequiel Di Paolo discuss the concept
of sense–making, or the interaction between the human mind and the environment around it that
results in "the creation and appreciation of meaning" (De Jaeger and Di Paolo 488). Specifically, it
addresses what occurs when two individuals converse and interact in a way that generates this
meaning together, what De Jaeger and Di Paolo identify as participatory sense making. They argue
that when placed into a social context, this sense making process becomes a separate entity from the
two individuals, one with "a temporary form of autonomy" (De Jaeger and Di Paolo 492). For De
Jaeger and Di Paolo, the fundamental aspect of cognition is the sense–making process. "Organisms
do not passively receive from their environments," they state, but organisms ... Show more content

This process requires action, the intake, distribution, and application of information with speech,
motion, even biological processes. As De Jaeger and Di Paolo state, "movements are at the center of
mental activity: a sense–making agent's movements – which include utterances – are the tools of her
cognition." These tools serve to facilitate "a particular kind of encounter between a 'questioning'
agent with a particular body...and a 'responding' segment of the world" (De Jaeger and Di Paolo
489). De Jaeger and Di Paolo took this phenomenon a step further in their essay, expanding on the
process of sense making and putting it into a conversational context between two or more people.
They state that when sense–making occurs between two

The Wedding At Cana By Paolo Veronese
When looking at the paintings that were created throughout the Renaissance art period, there are
multiple paintings that depict religious stories. The best of these paintings has Jesus depicted within
them. The majority of these paintings were created by those who had a large impact on the art
"world" today. One of the most famous paintings that reveals religion within it is The Last Supper
by Leonardo da Vinci, which is similarly to The Wedding at Cana by Paolo Veronese. When
analyzing these two pieces of artwork, they are often confused for the other due to the fact that they
are both based on biblical stories as well as how they are organized. There have been multiple
discussions about which painting has more impact based on their ... Show more content on

This is when he states, "One of you will betray me," (Matthew 26:21). This quote is depicted in the
painting by how we see Judas reaching for the same plate as Christ in which Judas strays away from
the plate. The way the painting is depicted is showing that Jesus is the reason for everything that he
is the reason we have the stories we live by today. While The Last Supper may be an influential
example of religion, it only tells of a small story within the religion and doesn't measure to
significance that The Wedding at Cana had to it.
Within the painting there are multiple figures who are all centered around Jesus. There are some
people who are sitting at a table who seem to be eating food. There are others who are around the
feast table, some people are playing instruments, some are meeting up with others, others are
helping serve those sitting upon the table, and some people at the top of the buildings seem as if they
are looking at something above them. There are other items depicted within this painting such as
animals. There are animals not only surrounding the people at the table, but there are even some
animals shown on the table and on people's body. There seems to be something above the wedding
in which a lot of people are gazing upon, when looking at it, it seems to be a lady at the top of this
building but it is unsure of who this

Environmental Text: Paolo Bacigalupi's The Windup Girl
Nature writing can be found in numerous genres and each can portray different opinions, thoughts,
examples, solutions, etc. Therefore, setting up a general set of guidelines allows people the
opportunity to define what is meant by nature writing. Defining genre can be highly influential when
readers are trying to capture the essence of what they are reading. Lawrence Buell's four criteria for
what constitutes an "environmental text," provide a basic set of understandable guidelines. However,
as the criteria stand they are too directed at the factual context and overlook the "experience" or
emotional resonance of reading such works. Paolo Bacigalupi's The Windup Girl, is a great example
of an environmental text that addresses both the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Bacigalupi, "Jaidee passes a woman selling bananas. . . . It's a new varietal from the
Ministry's rapid prototyping unit. Fast growing, resistant to makmak mites with their tiny black eggs
that sicken banana flowers before they can hope to grow" (Bacigalupi 121). In this particular excerpt
we are introduced to one of the many problems in a world touched by such environmental
destruction. There is an urgent need to engineer food prototypes to avoid the fast growing diseases
that are responsible for stopping the growth of natural food not humans. In The Windup Girl, food
and plant destruction topics are reoccurring which draws attention away from human interests. For
example, Bacigalupi writes: The Dung Lord offers Hock Seng wide fried U–Tex noodles, a crab and
green papaya salad, along with laab mu, gaeng gai and steamed U–Tex. Along with it all, he offers a
plate of sliced papaya. 'Don't be afraid. The chicken is latest generip and the papaya are just picked,
from my eastern plantation. Not a trace of blister rust in the last two seasons.'(Bacigalupi 137) These
lines provide additional evidence that human interests are not exclusively feeling the consequences
of climate change. We are provided with further knowledge of the engineered food that is sustaining
the world after much of the natural food has been irreversibly destroyed. We can also take from this
statement the undeniable evidence that food

Anthony C. Di Paolo: Ancient Egyptian Religion
According to historian, Anthony C. Di Paolo, Egyptian religion was mostly based off ancient myths.
There most popular myth being the creation of Earth. They believe that at one point only the ocean
existed. Then came the sun God, Ra, from of an egg floating in the ocean. Ra created four children:
the gods Shu and Geb and the goddesses Tefnut and Nut. Shu and Tefnut were the atmosphere. Geb
was the earth and Nut was the sky. Ra was the King of the gods. Geb and Nut eventually created two
sons, Set and Osiris, and two daughters, Isis and Nephthys. Osiris later on takes the throne from Ra,
with the help of Isis, his sister wife. Set killed his brother Osiris out of pure hatred. Isis and Anubis,
the son of Set, preserved Osiris's body. Anubis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Families with enough money would send their young boys to school to learn. There is no official
evidence but it is known that some girls taught to read and write and some even became doctors.
The Nile River was sacred to the Egyptians. Without it, their country would have been pure desert
because of the little rain they receive. Every summer, the Nile would flood because of rain up north.
These floods leave the soil rich for crops to grow. Egypt is divided into two sections: Upper Egypt
in the south and Lower Egypt in the north. The river runs from north to south and empties into the
Mediterranean Sea. Southern Egypt is made up of small mountains and Northern Egypt has wide
valleys. North of Cairo, the capital, is the sprawling, triangular Nile River Delta which is completely
covered with farms because of the rich soil. Egypt contains many different types of animals, such as
cheetahs, hyenas, crocodiles, and cobras. Egypt's wildlife now contains 21 protected regions to save
the wildlife. These places consist of oases, deserts, mountains, coastal areas, river islands, and
wetlands. This is the ideal place to visit to check out the wildlife in

Oedipus the King
The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle once identified the key ingredients of the tragedies that his
culture is so famous for. These ingredients include a character with a fatal flaw, the realization of the
fault for a particular problem and the final sudden reversal of fortune. For many tragedies, the fatal
flaw is demonstrated as excessive pride, which usually serves as the driving force of the play's
action. It is common, even beneficial, to have pride in oneself, but when it becomes expressed as
arrogance or in defiance of one's fate, it is considered excessive and often leads men to engage in
activities that will lead to their downfall. Aristotle (1998) stated "the tragic hero falls into bad
fortune because of some flaw in his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the process of trying to avoid fate, he has committed some of the greatest sins imaginable to him
– defiled his mother's bed, murdered his father and spawned monstrous children born of incest.
Rather than face the truth and unable to take the severe wound to his pride, Oedipus stabbed out his
eyes with broaches and walked away from Thebes forever, thereby sealing his doom through further
prideful actions. The sudden reversal of fortune has Oedipus walking away from Thebes a blind,
homeless beggar rather than the respected king he should have been based upon his more noble
qualities. While this is a surprise, it is nevertheless a logical possible conclusion to the events that
have taken place. This concept is brought out to greater extent in the film through the change in
setting. Pasolini begins and ends the film in a contemporary setting to when the film was made.
While the play suggests that Oedipus went wandering into the desert a self–blinded beggar man, the
film indicates that he has been wandering a tortured individual for much longer than a normal
lifespan.
Thus, the elements of classic tragedy are carried throughout both play and film to slightly different
interpretations. In both, a fatal flaw within the character of Oedipus drives his actions that
eventually seal his own doom. Seen as it is throughout the various elements of the classic tragedian
format of first

Analysis Of Drowned Cities By Paolo Bacigalupi
It seems that all humans have this underlying animalistic instinct to always come out on top of the
other, by all means necessary. It's this very instinct that can prohibit us from obtaining this 'utopian'
society that we strive so hard to obtain. In societies like the one depicted in Drowned cities, where
there is little impact from the people and the only action comes from the military or government,
malicious intent can tend to rise. It's as if it magnifies this urge, to acquire control and seek power in
times of turmoil and insecurity. In Drowned cities Paolo Bacigalupi depicts what this very society
would look like by putting us in the shoes of war torn girl named mahlia, living in a dark malicious
time. This can be a game of perspective, those at the top could very well view the society as their
own utopia, but to those at the bottom it could be their version of hell. ... Show more content on

The War Experience in Italian Film Essay
The War Experience in Italian Film
The experience of war as it is presented throughout the history of Italian cinema is a uniquely
composite display of historical reverence and cultural consecration. An analysis of this experience in
all of its manifestations can be discerned from the evaluation of one or several works from the post–
World
War II period within the corpus of the Italian cultural signification. It follows from this approach
that the essence of the results of this analysis will then represent an appreciative grasp of the
aforementioned corpus. The war experience in Italian film can be succinctly considered through a
detailed analysis of Rome, Open City (Roma, Città Aperta, Roberto Rossellini, 1945),

The film, which contains moments ranging from dark comedy to poignant melodrama, also relies on
stock documentary footage and intimate battle sequences to supplement the enthralling story. The
narrative progression of the film carries through effortlessly, and is accompanied by rhetorically
inventive dialogue and character associations that operate on the allegorical level. For instance, one
scene in which a group of Nazi officials murder a sheep operates metaphorically to link Christianity
to communism while simultaneously equating the fascists with butchers of the innocent. (Forgacs 9–
45)
Concomitant with this method of scrutinizing the film, many of the characters' names are subject to
onomastics. Giorgio Manfredi, who later in the film changes his identity to Giovanni Episcopo, is
switched from association with St. George (typically shown slaying a dragon) to St. John (the
martyred priest of ancient Rome). The priest, Pietro Pellegrini, is translated as
Peter Pilgrim. He is associated, by virtue of his name, with the side of good and in the dominion of
religion represents a modern analog of St. Peter (A martyr who was put to death during the Roman
persecutions). Giussepina
(Pina), is the female form of Joseph, who was the patron of the Universal church. Lastly there is
Romoletto, the neighborhood child that sabotages the
Nazi events and chants the themes of the resistance without knowing their meaning. His name is

Enemy Within, Enemy Without
"Anna Magnani stars as a resourceful working–class Roman mother trying to overcome her
unfortunate past to give a better life to her children, even as outside threats threaten everything she
has worked so hard to build." This vague framework could easily describe both Roberto Rossellini 's
neorealist war drama Rome, Open City and Pier Paolo Pasolini 's irreverent rebuke Mamma Roma.
Rome, Open City concerns itself with the devastation the Italian people faced at the hands of their
German occupiers and their collaborators, the titular city and its inhabitants crumbling away in both
body and spirit over the course of a cruel winter. In their city's darkest hour, average citizens rise up

In the first place, it has the wind–blown look of a film shot from actualities, with the camera
providentially on the scene. The stringent necessity for economy compelled the producers to make a
film that has all the appearance and flavor of a straight documentary.
Crudely shot on discarded US Signal Corps film whenever Rosellini could throw together the
money to pay for further filming, the film's bleak visuals become a character in and of themselves,
bracingly authentic despite their complete absence of polish. Much like the characters themselves,
the film is quite admirable despite being unrefined and without the proper resources to express itself.
By the time Pier Paolo Pasolini wrote the script for Mamma Roma in 1962, Rome had undergone
quite the dramatic makeover. Reaping the benefits from American investment and the creation of the
European Common Market, Italians saw their standard living rise to never before seen heights. As
John F. Kennedy extolled while addressing a dinner held in his honor by then–President of Italy

"Liberal Education" and Paolo Freire
Liberal Education is an approach to learning that empowers individuals and prepares them to deal
with complexity, diversity, and change. It provides students with broad knowledge of the wider
world in fields of science, culture, and society, as well as in–depth study in a specific area of
interest. A liberal education helps students develop a sense of social responsibility, as well as strong
and transferable intellectual and practical skills such as communication, analytical and problem–
solving skills, and a demonstrated ability to apply knowledge and skills in real–world settings.

Liberal Education helps to associates concepts to examples. A concept refers to a general idea or
claim. It is a broader statement. While an example is a particular situation or instance in which
something might occur. An example is often used to support a concept. A proper way to distinct
between the two is to realize that without concepts, examples have nothing tied to them. This means
that without liberal education (concept) you cannot associate the partnership between student
teacher (example) with anything. This can also work on the reverse where individuals may have
trouble remembering concepts without specific examples tied to them.
Paulo Freire, perhaps the most influential thinker about education in the late twentieth century gave
major ideas on education and his thoughts have left a significant impact on educational practice,
informal education and popular education in particular. Based on Paolo Freire, "liberal education" is
the concept that allows people to prepare themselves to deal with complex questions and make
challenges. By learning liberal education, it helps us to Mahmoud Hamouda,3 build knowledge
broadly and deeply. Freire 's term is problem–imposing education. Liberal education and problem–
imposing education both have the same goals, to improve humanity and make us critical thinkers.
Humans should not be isolated by denying the right of debate or dialogue.

Prostitution Is Considered The World’S “Oldest Occupation”
Prostitution is considered the world's "oldest occupation" in history; and yet, there is little to no
work done exploring the lifestyles of prostitutes since it is such a controversial role. However,
Pasolini embraced the controversy and produced movies about the day in the life of pimps and
prostitutes. He explores the dynamics between pimps, prostitutes, and the rest of civilization whom
are not part of this risqué subculture. He also has the ability to shed a new light on this occupation
and the people who run in the same circle with a nostalgia of the way things used to be instead of
the way that things are headed. Pasolini shows the life of the prostitutes and pimps in his movies in

apartment with her son, and attempts to make a living selling produce. However, her dream is never
fully actualized because Carmine, her pimp, quickly reenters her life and forces her back into
prostitution. Her son ended up falling into the wrong crowd and joined a gang (Mamma Roma).
Mamma Roma's main reason for wanted to escape prostitution was her son. She wanted to set a
good example for him and she believed that having a normal, average, middle class life was
something she was capable of achieving for the two of them. She so desperately wanted this kind of
lifestyle, because that was what was expected of her, and it was what seemed stable. The bourgeois
ideals have been embedded into her mind and that was all she could dream of. They gave her false
hope for a lifestyle that she would never be able to attain. She was in search of something better–
something more. However, for a single mother in the 1960's, this was never going to be anything
greater than a dream. Being unmarried and with a child already meant she could not fit into the
middle class lifestyle she wanted. She also already had ties to prostitution, and regardless of any
attempt to leave that kind of life behind, it still came back to haunt her. According to Pasolini, her

Paolo Veronese
Mannerism is a period of European art that bridges concepts from both the idealized style of
Renaissance art and the melodramatic theatrics of the Baroque. One of the most prominent Italian
painters of this period is Paolo Veronese, who studied under Titan and earned the title of a master
colorist. Some of Veronese's works are on campus as part of the Blanton Museum's Suida–Manning

The artist's mastery of hues and values help create a glowing and relaxing atmosphere. Many
complex contemporary and pastel colors are used in their pure saturated form, such as turquoise,
fuchsia, and cerulean. The genius is in the gradations in value because they make the clothing look
very lifelike. The drapery conveys a silky, velvety sheen thanks to the range of these color values
and the silvery white paint used that illustrates light reflecting off of these clothes. There seems to
be a light source out of view to the left of the viewer, and its role is crucial. Since he is renowned for
his colorist skills, light can really bring out Veronese's artistry; from the shimmer of Gabriel's robe

Analysis Of Chaucer 's ' The Canterbury Tales '
Understanding the sources for a particular work is an important task for literary critics, because it
ultimately leads to a better understanding and appreciation of the work itself. Sometimes similarities
are so weak as to strain the credulity of theories propounding influence. At other times, the ties are
so strong that influence is near certain. However, regardless of the strength of such ties, the
alterations made to an original source are very potent cues as to authorial intention. In composing
The Canterbury Tales, there is a broad diversity of tales told by a wide range of narrators. This
indicates that Chaucer likely used a wide variety of sources. The alterations made by Chaucer to the
source material for the Clerk's Tale, including Boccaccio's Decameron X, or "The Story of
Griselda," indicate Chaucer's motive to examine issues such as marriage as was found in
Renaissance Italy, and to explore the state of mind of the Marquis, as well as Griselda. Chaucer not
only layers psychological depth to Boccaccio's tale, but also adds to its traditional veneration of the
obedient and tractable wife a genuine admiration for women in general.
Much critical ink has been spilled contesting the power of influence Boccaccio's work in the
Decameron had over Chaucer in writing The Canterbury Tales. Indeed, though the two works
diverge in both plot and subject, they also possess strong similarities. These convergences have led
readers to presume that Chaucer engaged in heavy

Death Of The Chaucer 's The Canterbury Tales Essay
As a lurking shadow prowling throughout a novel or a moral fate waiting for the outcome of a
situation, death is an element in which there is no limit to what it can described as. Death has been
in literature as a theme to many outcomes, such as fate, morality, fear, lessons, and more. Death can
be the ending to a protagonist or antagonist who has battled through trials, but it can also be a
literally element to describe the battles or actions someone has faced. Though literature describes
death in many certain ways, death has no central theme. A theme can be pulled out of a story, such
as a moral lesson leading towards death or fear of accepting death into life, but overall death can
never be defined as only one central theme. Death itself can be used to show what the meaning is in
life, as it has no limit to what it can be used to label. In Geoffrey Chaucer's, The Canterbury Tales,
the Pardoner describes a tale full of greed, gambling, and drunkenness to explain the morality of fate
leading towards death. In a town full of young, drunken people, three of the men overhear about a
funeral. One of the servants explains to the group that one of their friends was killed last night by a
mysterious figured, referred to as Death. Due to the drunk lives and deadly sins each person shows,
the Pardoner explains that, "these ones are enemies of Christ's cross thus, of whom the end is death."
(Vol. B, 215). The people of the town are not preparing for the afterlife of them, and the

Pima and her crew were looking at Sloths corpse, feeling bad about how she didn't survive the harsh

members of a crew, they have to figure ways to survive. Pima was one of those crew members who
learned how to survive, since she knew that the beach was a hard place to live at. She had to know
how to survive because it wasn't a game. In order to live, you had to do everything, even if it was
impossible to do. But, Nita wouldn't know how to survive because she seems like the kind to depend
on money and she wouldn't know how to do things to keep her alive. In the beginning of the novel,
Nita was found by Pima and Nailer while scavenging through the wrecked ship. "Even bruised and
dead, she was pretty, pinned under the pile of her bed and the weight of all the stuff that had crushed
her" (90). If Nita knew anything about survival, she would have gotten herself out of the mess she
was in, and looked for help. She shouldn't have stayed in the same spot she was in. Eventually,
someone would have found her and could have killed her for the gold that she had. Nita could have
been found by Richard Lopez and his crew, and right at that spot they would have killed her for
everything she had. Luckily Pima and Nita

Mannerist Paintings
Paintings from the High Renaissance and Mannerist Period Mannerism emerged and rejected the
classical Greco–Roman art in the 1520s, which constituted to the Renaissance era. The Mannerist
works challenged the Renaissance style and the interest in human anatomy, perspective, and
proportion (Kleiner 600). In contrast to the Late Renaissance painters where they were inclined to
create naturalistic art, Mannerist painters honed in creating art that was unrealistic by portraying
ambiguous space, unusual presentations of traditional themes, and removing the limitations of
expected conventions (Kleiner 643). The Venetian representative of Mannerism is Jacopo Robusti
(Kleiner 636). He is known as Tintoretto, and one of his most famous paintings is Last Supper.
Another great Venetian master was Paolo Caliari of Verona (Kleiner 637). He is known as Paolo
Veronese, and he painted Christ in the House of Levi. It is beneficial to one's knowledge in
understanding the similarities and differences in size, content, composition and form of these two
paintings. Furthermore, it is fascinating how these two works reflect and how they were influenced
by their time and culture; moreover, one is able to perceive the era in which the two paintings were
created. In regards to size and content, Tintoretto's Last Supper and Veronese's Christ in the House
of Levi share quite a few similarities. Both of these paintings were painted on huge canvases. Last

Analysis Of The Wedding At Cana
The artwork by Paolo Veronese were known for being created on large platforms and were centered
on religious topics. One notable works of his was The Wedding at Cana. This piece is a depiction of
Jesus' first miracle as he turned water into wine for a wedding celebration. Based in Venice,
Veronese's life was heavily influenced by the Christian culture and was esteemed by the community
and church officials for his artistic abilities. As Veronese painted in the Mannerist style, The
Wedding at Cana was an asymmetrical painting with elegant principles. Also, Veronese heavily used
vibrant colors to show the richness of the subjects and to create light. This painting has lived
through several interesting eras and owners. Wars and political overlords dominated the geography
of this painting and even damaged the canvas. Since Veronese's style and talents were sought after,
his work, religious and secular, was mostly commissioned by patrons of the Venetian community.
Veronese was a painter fond of the Mannerist style in the High Renaissance era. As he aged, art and
religion were important aspects of Veronese's life. He fully embraced the traditions and regulations
of his God and was even commissioned because of his talent and devotion to the church. While a
teenager, many church officials in his area asked Veronese to paint important works of art in their
churches. The Giustiniania family esteemed Veronese so highly that they wanted him to paint inside

16th century Venetian Triumvirate: Titian, Veronese, and Tintoretto were master painters and artists

During the Venetian Renaissance period, studies of female nudes were not to be tarnished and
dishonored. Many of the female nude portraits may have created a supernatural female to add
interest, once the background subject(s) were sketched.
These master artists painted from a 'live' nude posed, as well as free hand, facing towards the male
subjects in the composition, but not actively in conversation, or off to the side distanced in some
form of entertainment. Drama was an essential element of Venetian artists universally and each of
the master artists honored Venetian art as an unidentifiable history and independent unity across the

A divine, provocative Venetian artist who is known as a "Prestezza style painter" is Tintoretto with

A genteel courtesan was considered to the 'ideal' embodiment of the Renaissance ideal, of sensuality

intellectual dominance and became notorious and well–known across Europe.

"Here ends the third day of the Decameron and the fourth day begins: under the reign of Philostrato,
the stories are about people whose love has ended in tears" (249). In the second story of the fourth
day, our story teller Pampinea is more inclined to delight rather than dispirit her audience. While
staying within the days brief, she challenges the blind obedience to the kings hand by using her wit
to forge a tragic comic relief tale. Before beginning her story, Pampinea feels it is of urgency to take
the time to set up her feelings about the clergy. She reveals that her story allows her to demonstrate
"the lengths to which the religious orders go in their hypocrisy" (265). Clergyman, with their feeble
facade, are courteous when they are out begging others to show them mercy when they show no
mercy to people who have commited the same sins that they have committed themselves. They
spend their whole lives receiving instead of giving. While others have to strive in order to be
allowed into heaven, clergyman seem to take on the role as rightful landowners of heaven, assigning
each departing soul a better or worse place according to the amount of financial generosity they
allow to them. With that being said, Pampinea is able to begin her story about a young man with the
name of Berto dello Massa. Berto is a rogue (a dishonest, knavish person) whose corrupt life

Thesis Statement For Auroville
Thesis – The Body A. Introduction Research Proposal condensed– Reason for the study. Why is it
important to try and belong to your built environment? Especially today, when we see that lots of
efforts are being taken to try and bridge this gap, especially in the cities in India. Where the
development has been haphazard, now it's too late to go backwards and carefully plan, so the
relevance in looking at a careful approach from the beginning holds a lot of interest for me. There
are different attempts being made in the cities to now bridge the gap but what does it mean to
continuously bridge the gap and not do it as an after thought? This is the attempt that I find most

zones; namely residential, cultural, international and Industrial zones with a meditation space at the
centre. In 1966, Roger Anger, a French Architect from Paris working with the Ashram, also Mother's
Grand son–in law, presented two plans. The first plan was based on a strict orthogonal grid, divided
the city into two major sectors, housing and industries facing each other, with the meditation space
on an artificial lake, which was surrounded by the international sector on three sides. The second
model represented the city in a form of a radial circular plan with the meditation garden at the centre
and sectors divided by concentric and radial streets and avenues. The former plan was rejected by
Mother and was developed on circular lines. She said 'it is the open city' [the 'Nebula']. It also
resembled the sketch she had given Roger. Whilst, retaining the dynamism of the previous plan, its
spiral form radiates from the spiritual centre of the town, with a progressive densification and
increase of height towards it. There were no mega–structures in the final master–plan; only a
succession of buildings of decreasing height towards the periphery, down to a minimum height. . (

Theodora Empress Of Byzantium By Paolo Cesaretti
Throughout most of history men have been credited with almost all of humanities major
accomplishments. The world of ancient Rome was no exception. Great emperors, philosophers, and
religious figures all came from this great empire. But as with everything there was an exception, in
the case of the early Byzantine Empire it was Theodora. This summer I read Theodora Empress of
Byzantium by Paolo Cesaretti, a book chronicling Theodora's life and accomplishments.Theodora
was born into that lowest rank of the empire in about 501, the daughter of the bear keeper of the
blue faction of the Hippodrome. As Theodora grew up she was put to work on the stage, as a help
behind the scenes and eventually as an actress. In time Theodora matured into a beautiful women
and she was using that to her advantage. She was said to use her body as a prop on the stage, often
with little or no clothing on. Eventually she started to take advantage of her looks off stage and was
said to have numerous lovers who paid to see her. But throughout all of her questionable years
Theodora never lost sight of her goals, she never stopped looking for an opportunity to become
something more, and eventually all her hard work payed off, she was summoned to the palace to see
the soon to be emperor; Justinian. When they met he not only feel in love with her body but also the
mind that had managed to get her from the lowest level of the empire to the highest. But this was

The Ship Breaker By Paolo Bacigalupi

life changing disasters (such as melted ice caps and the loss of every costal islands) Nailer, Nita, and
Tool will soon come to see the reality of greed and loyalty. Everything starts once a young teen

But the place where this takes place is very unique. Such a simple story arch, but with a twist of

Bacigalupi creates strong character development with Nailer. He starts out the book with Nailer
being afraid of his father and is sceptical of killing and the subject of death. But once he sees Blue
Eyes get killed he realizes that killing is essential to survive in his world. In the beginning of the
story one of his light crew members, Sloth, doesn't help him out of a oil tanker. Nailer is forced to
do it himself, and is ready to die. But then he realizes that he must man up and get out of the tanker.
This is where Nailers determination, later in the story, comes from.
Whilst reading the story you will feel like it has gone by fast. This has to do with Bacigalupi's
writing. He writes in a very fast paced way, but when he needs to slow down and focus on
something he will. He also writes with a lot of figurative language which creates a picture of what is

Summary Of Paolo De Matteis'sThe Adoration Of The Shepherds
Paolo de Matteis's esteemed work The Adoration of the Shepherds is a large painting, depicting a
classic Christian Nativity scene, that is displayed in the Dallas Museum of Art. In the piece, a dozen
or so individuals surround the newborn Christ and his parents, gazing at him in admiration and
paying him homage while animals look serenely on and angels assemble around the heads of the
Holy Family. The artist employs several classic artistic elements in his painting, such as line, light,
color, and shape, to draw the viewer's focus directly to his intended point of emphasis, the infant
Jesus.
One of the most effective principles Paolo de Matteis uses in this painting is his use of lines and
invisible lines to direct the viewer's attention to the child in his mother's arms. The shepherds and
their animals, the Virgin Mary, and Saint Joseph are all instances of invisible lines in this painting,
as their outstretched hands and lines of vision are all pointing to the baby Jesus. For example, the
three women and the child kneeling to the bottom right side of the manger are all staring or pointing
to the upper left, toward Jesus. Moving to the upper right corner of the painting, the ox and the
donkey are directing their gaze to the bottom left, once again at Jesus. The two men to the right of
the animals also point in that direction. In the top and center, Mary and Joseph watch their child,
creating yet another invisible line pointing toward the point of emphasis, while the angels

Friendship And Family In Ship Breaker By Paolo Bacigalupi
In life, some have friends and family who remain important even when the relationship ends in pain.
Some learn in life that not everyone is honest or loyal and some learn to overcome toxic things and
how to see the people who care, love and have our back. There's a struggle seen in Ship Breaker
written by Paolo Bacigalupi. The novel is set in America's coast region in a post– apocalyptic future
and is written in the third person but the readers also see part of Nailers perspective. Nailer is a
teenage boy that works for the light crew looking for copper wiring but is also struggling with an
abusive relationship at home with his father. In the novel we see how Nailer grows from the abuse at
home and finds a new family with loyalty and no blood bond, blood does not define family. Nailer
finds friends that love and care for him. Bacigalupi's central message about loyalty is highlighted in
the contrast between the abusive, destructive relationship Nailer experiences with his father and the
love and trust he experiences with his friends.
BODY PARAGRAPH 1
Bacigalupi's use of the abusive and destructive relationship Nailer experiences with his father

Fear And Poverty In Ship Breaker By Paolo Bacigalupi
In a world full of issues such as poverty everyone is just trying to survive to keep their families safe.
Life is already hard on its own but when thrown issues such as poverty it just makes it harder. Paolo
Bacigalupi displays the money issues people are facing when two kids from different socioeconomic
rankings clash in the book Ship Breaker. When Nita and Nailer who have two very different lives
meet their perspective on life changes. Nita opens her eyes to what is going on in the world when
she goes from living her swanky life to living in fear and poverty. The book Ship Breaker by Paolo
Bacigalupi demonstrates how people in a higher socioeconomic status have more appreciation for
life when they experience poverty first hand.
At the beginning of the book Ship Breaker, two teenagers with two totally different socioeconomic
rankings realize how different their lives really are when they encounter each other. After the
hurricane on Bright Sands Beach,a boy who is living in poverty named Nailer finds a huge clipper
ship which belongs to a wealthy teenager. The wealthy teenager the ship belonged to is named Nita
and her ship crashed during the hurricane when running away from her enemies. Nita needs help
getting back to her father and if Nailer helps her she will help him with his poverty problems in
return. Nailer then grasped the fact that "some people were born lucky and sailed on clipper ships,
and then there were beach rats like him and Pima [Nailer's friend and co ship breaker]" (Bacigalupi
76). This quote is very significant to the theme because it represents the swankey life Nita has and
the impoverished life Nailer and Pima have. The quote " the prevalence of extreme poverty in the
United States may shock many" from the article "The Rise of Extreme Poverty In the United
States"by H Luke Shaefer and Kathryn Edin is really important. This quote is really important to the
claim and the quote from the book because it supports that a lot of people who are more fortunate
are unaware of the other socioeconomic class and are surprised when they realize how differently
they live. Nita is a perfect example for this claim because she was blinded from poverty and when
she experienced it, she realized how

Comparing The Two Stories From Joyful Strains, By Paolo...
"Compare what the two stories (from Joyful Strains) suggest about gaining a sense of belonging
and/or establishing an identity."
Joyful Strains is a collaboration of short memoirs written by a group of expatriates about their
experiences moving to Australia, and the struggles they faced that shaped them into the people they
are today. Deborah Carlyon moved to Australia from her birth country of Papua New Guinea when
she was 12–years–old, and has written the story 'Hidden by the Dream'. Paolo Totaro moved from
Italy to Australia when she was only a child and has contributed to the book with her short story
'Pointing North'. Joyful Strains follows the authors as they explain how they navigated the process
of finding a sense of belonging in Australia and establishing their own identities.
In the memoir 'Pointing North', Paolo Totaro finds that despite having barely any memories of Italy
and having spent most of her life in Australia, "fitting in" is not easy. Paolo Totaro pointed out that
many of her hardships originated in the schoolyard – "They too figured it was too hard to
pronounce, so Greasy Wog became my moniker." She noticed that throughout her child, many
people overlooked her feelings and simply labelled her as a "hysterical Italian". Paolo stated that she
doesn't "remember any other non–Aussie kids at school" and wondered whether she would have felt
as if she belonged if she were not the only foreigner. She found that as others treated her as an
outsider, she clung

Paolo Hawkei

  • 1. Paolo Hawkei Paolo Roversi was born in Ravenna, Italy in 1946. He lived and worked in Paris for over 35 years and currently still lives in Paris. Roversi's interest in photography started during a trip to Spain in 1964. After the vacation Roversi set up a darkroom in his cellar with another amature, the local postman battista Minguzzi, and they both began developing and printing their own black and white work. In 1972 he was invited to Paris, at the invitation of Peter Knapp, a renowned Art Director for Elle. He started under Peter Knapp as a photojournalist, but soon found his focus would be better put towards fashion photography. He started working as a reporter for Huppert Agency but through his connections he began to inch his way into fashion photography. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another reason I chose Paolo Roversi was because when I saw his photo's they immediately talked to me more than any other photographs. The first one's I saw looked like headshots and the models had so much emotion in their expression which is something that a lot of models and photographers now seem to forget. I also loved the choice in lighting and when I finally stumbled upon The Great Illusion photoshoot I fell even more in love. The use of the shadows was amazing and told a story that wouldn't otherwise be told. One of my favorite things to play with to create effects is light, so him playing with light to create those amazing photos made my decision to do a report on him ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Theme Of Class In Ship Breaker By Paolo Bacigalupi In Paolo Bacigalupi's novel Ship Breaker (2010), Bacigalupi suggests that people are faced with moral or immoral decisions on a daily basis and that what people decide determine their character. Bacigalupi backs up his claim by telling a story of a young man in a future society having to make a monumental choice that could set himself up for the future or that could save a complete stranger's life. By throwing different variables at the main character, Bacigalupi puts Nailer in sticky situations in order to highlight the everyday decisions we make that has an important effect on our character. Bacigalupi's target audience is teens and young adults that he speaks to in a calm, relaxed tone and he builds a friendly relationship with. Throughout the novel, Bacigalupi develops a theme of class difference in society, creates a magnificent setting, and does a stunning job in enhancing his main character. In Ship Breaker, many themes are present, but the theme of differences in class within society emerged over all others. From the very start of the novel, Nailer was a poor ship breaker who didn't know if he would have enough food for dinner. To elaborate, Nailer's only chance at food for the night was if he met his quota for the day, "'I'm not going to meet my quota,' Nailer said. 'Just keep lookin,'' replied Bapi" (Bacigalupi 23). Despite the differences, Nailer eventually teams up with Sadna, a privileged girl that came from the upper echelons of society: "'Yes, I've got a private chopper we can take down to Orleans,' exclaimed Sadna narcissistically" (Bacigalupi 159). The author included this miniscule detail to show that no matter where you began at, you can eventually reach the top. This added to the plot because it showed the audience that it doesn't mean anything where you came from, but you can still be successful. Also, the theme was further supported by the fact that micro societies emerged in Nailer's hometown of Bright Sands Beach and in Orleans. To support the development of class difference, Bacigalupi creates a stunning setting that encapsulates everything the theme has to offer in Ship Breaker. Bacigalupi uses the exposition of the novel to set the scene of Bright Sands Beach, a poor, scrap metal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Paolo Caliari Research Paper Paolo was born in the city of Verona in 1528. Paolo's father worked as a stonecutter and his mother was the daughter of a nobleman called Caliari. Although Paolo's mother was an illegitimate daughter of the nobleman, Caliari, Paolo still adopted that as his name, becoming Paolo Caliari. Paolo was nicknamed "Veronese" after his birthplace, Verona. As a young boy, Veronese was trained as a stonecutter, like his father, but when he was fourteen Antonio Badile, a painter, began training Veronese as his apprentice. Because of Badile, Veronese gained a passion for paintings that included people and architecture mixed together, as well as a basic painting technique. Aside from Badile, several painters including, Giambattista Zelotti, Paolo Farinati, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His interest in the luxurious quality of fabrics can be seen in the painting, The Finding of Moses. According to biblical history, the event depicted in the painting happened in Egypt over three thousand years earlier than the painting was created, but Veronese placed the painting in northern Italy by placing the Alps and a Tyrolian town in the background. The people in the painting were modern for his time, a sixteenth–century princess, as well as her court. The basis of the painting is Moses's mother hiding him when the Pharaoh is putting all of the first–born sons in Israel to death. The painting's princess finds Moses in a basket in the river. Although baby Moses is the reason for the painting, the viewer's eyes are lead to the face of the princess by the flowing colors and spiraling, twisting figures. Veronese leads the viewer's eyes along various paths, but they always return to the face of the princess. The viewer's eyes are drawn to her because "her light complexion is set off by the dark foliage behind her". Some critics believe that the use of light is contradictory to the use of natural light that was admired by Renaissance ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With an impressive resume and years of experience in styling for feature films, TV and commercials, Paolo is making some of the biggest waves of his career in his permanent role as lead costume designer on the TV series "Empire". Having worked on television shows like Ugly Betty, Smash and the Sex and the City 2 movie, taking risks is a common practice for this renowned stylist and even though the stakes keep getting higher and higher due to the popularity of Empire, Paolo seems to be #Unbothered and keeping his eye on the Fashion prize. His favorite to dress out the fellas was a draw between Hakeem, played by Bryshere Gray and Jamal, played by Jussie Smollet. • 9. Comparing Humans And The Environment In Pump Six By Paolo... In the world we live in the environment and those who live in it are all influenced by one another. These influences can often be positive like when a bird helps to pollinate a flower or negative like when humans dump toxins and other chemicals into oceans or rivers, which then kill the animals living in it and also the animals that consume those sea animals. Nowadays humans have more of a negative affect on the environment rather than a positive one, however some people are trying to turn things around before things get too bad. In Ecotopia by Ernest Callenbach, "Pump Six" by Paolo Bacigalupi, and the short film Mr. Green we see how the relationship between humans and the environment has impacted one another. Ecotopia is set in a futuristic period where Washington, Oregon, and Northern California have seceded from the rest of the United States and have formed their own country called Ecotopia. Ecotopia is and ecofriendly country and people there are more connected to their environment. "But what matters most in the aspiration to live in balance with nature, 'walk lightly on the land,' treat the earth as a mother" (p.29 Callenbach). • 11. Giovanni Di Paolo Giovanni Di Paolo's (and workshop) circa 1420 through 1482 altarpiece Virgin and Child with Saints is beautifully preserved and miraculously intact. The three main panels depict St. Nicolas of Bari, Virgin and Child with a kneeling Monk, St. Galganus and the Angel Gabriel. Other smaller panels show St. Dominic, St. Bartholomew, St. Francis of Assisi and St. John, while the three pinnacles show Christ flanked by Gabriel and by the Virgin of Annunciation set in golden backgrounds. This work of art from the Early Renaissance period visually creates a feeling of awe and reflection, while holding both a distinctive visual style and slight narrative. With heavy gilded edges surrounding the separate panels and adorning the top of the altarpiece, this painting, created using tempera and gold leaf, seems to cast a glow on the wall holding it, bringing about a holy charisma. The warm colors and golden edges bring a welcoming feeling, even though the characters themselves don't appear to seem very happy (probably to give a foreboding edge of respect). Paintings of the Christ Child and Mary were very common in this time period, yet the one is remarkable to view fully intact and restored. The Virgin and Child with Saints was created sometime between 1420 and 1482, a window that perfectly classifies it as being part of the Italian Early Renaissance. Many of the decisions made while creating this piece fit right into this time period, while others do not. Of those decisions, the creating of an altarpiece itself, the content chosen to depict, and the way the content is presented and illustrated, and how similar this piece is to others in the era all best prove that this piece is contextually an Early Renaissance work of ... • 13. De Jaeger And Di Paolo In Participatory Sense–Making, authors Hanne De Jaeger and Ezequiel Di Paolo discuss the concept of sense–making, or the interaction between the human mind and the environment around it that results in "the creation and appreciation of meaning" (De Jaeger and Di Paolo 488). Specifically, it addresses what occurs when two individuals converse and interact in a way that generates this meaning together, what De Jaeger and Di Paolo identify as participatory sense making. They argue that when placed into a social context, this sense making process becomes a separate entity from the two individuals, one with "a temporary form of autonomy" (De Jaeger and Di Paolo 492). For De Jaeger and Di Paolo, the fundamental aspect of cognition is the sense–making process. "Organisms do not passively receive from their environments," they state, but organisms ... As De Jaeger and Di Paolo state, "movements are at the center of mental activity: a sense–making agent's movements – which include utterances – are the tools of her cognition." These tools serve to facilitate "a particular kind of encounter between a 'questioning' agent with a particular body...and a 'responding' segment of the world" (De Jaeger and Di Paolo 489). De Jaeger and Di Paolo took this phenomenon a step further in their essay, expanding on the process of sense making and putting it into a conversational context between two or more people. • 15. The Wedding At Cana By Paolo Veronese When looking at the paintings that were created throughout the Renaissance art period, there are multiple paintings that depict religious stories. The best of these paintings has Jesus depicted within them. The majority of these paintings were created by those who had a large impact on the art "world" today. One of the most famous paintings that reveals religion within it is The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, which is similarly to The Wedding at Cana by Paolo Veronese. When analyzing these two pieces of artwork, they are often confused for the other due to the fact that they are both based on biblical stories as well as how they are organized. This is when he states, "One of you will betray me," (Matthew 26:21). This quote is depicted in the painting by how we see Judas reaching for the same plate as Christ in which Judas strays away from the plate. The way the painting is depicted is showing that Jesus is the reason for everything that he is the reason we have the stories we live by today. While The Last Supper may be an influential example of religion, it only tells of a small story within the religion and doesn't measure to significance that The Wedding at Cana had to it. Within the painting there are multiple figures who are all centered around Jesus. There are some people who are sitting at a table who seem to be eating food. There are others who are around the feast table, some people are playing instruments, some are meeting up with others, others are helping serve those sitting upon the table, and some people at the top of the buildings seem as if they are looking at something above them. There are other items depicted within this painting such as animals. There are animals not only surrounding the people at the table, but there are even some animals shown on the table and on people's body. There seems to be something above the wedding in which a lot of people are gazing upon, when looking at it, it seems to be a lady at the top of this building but it is unsure of who this ... • 17. Environmental Text: Paolo Bacigalupi's The Windup Girl Nature writing can be found in numerous genres and each can portray different opinions, thoughts, examples, solutions, etc. Therefore, setting up a general set of guidelines allows people the opportunity to define what is meant by nature writing. Defining genre can be highly influential when readers are trying to capture the essence of what they are reading. Lawrence Buell's four criteria for what constitutes an "environmental text," provide a basic set of understandable guidelines. However, as the criteria stand they are too directed at the factual context and overlook the "experience" or emotional resonance of reading such works. Paolo Bacigalupi's The Windup Girl, is a great example of an environmental text that addresses both the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Bacigalupi, "Jaidee passes a woman selling bananas. . . . It's a new varietal from the Ministry's rapid prototyping unit. Fast growing, resistant to makmak mites with their tiny black eggs that sicken banana flowers before they can hope to grow" (Bacigalupi 121). In this particular excerpt we are introduced to one of the many problems in a world touched by such environmental destruction. There is an urgent need to engineer food prototypes to avoid the fast growing diseases that are responsible for stopping the growth of natural food not humans. In The Windup Girl, food and plant destruction topics are reoccurring which draws attention away from human interests. For example, Bacigalupi writes: The Dung Lord offers Hock Seng wide fried U–Tex noodles, a crab and green papaya salad, along with laab mu, gaeng gai and steamed U–Tex. Along with it all, he offers a plate of sliced papaya. 'Don't be afraid. The chicken is latest generip and the papaya are just picked, from my eastern plantation. Not a trace of blister rust in the last two seasons.'(Bacigalupi 137) These lines provide additional evidence that human interests are not exclusively feeling the consequences of climate change. We are provided with further knowledge of the engineered food that is sustaining the world after much of the natural food has been irreversibly destroyed. We can also take from this statement the undeniable evidence that food ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Oedipus the King The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle once identified the key ingredients of the tragedies that his culture is so famous for. These ingredients include a character with a fatal flaw, the realization of the fault for a particular problem and the final sudden reversal of fortune. For many tragedies, the fatal flaw is demonstrated as excessive pride, which usually serves as the driving force of the play's action. It is common, even beneficial, to have pride in oneself, but when it becomes expressed as arrogance or in defiance of one's fate, it is considered excessive and often leads men to engage in activities that will lead to their downfall. Aristotle (1998) stated "the tragic hero falls into bad fortune because of some flaw in his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the process of trying to avoid fate, he has committed some of the greatest sins imaginable to him – defiled his mother's bed, murdered his father and spawned monstrous children born of incest. Rather than face the truth and unable to take the severe wound to his pride, Oedipus stabbed out his eyes with broaches and walked away from Thebes forever, thereby sealing his doom through further prideful actions. The sudden reversal of fortune has Oedipus walking away from Thebes a blind, homeless beggar rather than the respected king he should have been based upon his more noble qualities. While this is a surprise, it is nevertheless a logical possible conclusion to the events that have taken place. This concept is brought out to greater extent in the film through the change in setting. Pasolini begins and ends the film in a contemporary setting to when the film was made. While the play suggests that Oedipus went wandering into the desert a self–blinded beggar man, the film indicates that he has been wandering a tortured individual for much longer than a normal lifespan. Thus, the elements of classic tragedy are carried throughout both play and film to slightly different interpretations. In both, a fatal flaw within the character of Oedipus drives his actions that eventually seal his own doom. Seen as it is throughout the various elements of the classic tragedian format of first ... • 23. Analysis Of Drowned Cities By Paolo Bacigalupi It seems that all humans have this underlying animalistic instinct to always come out on top of the other, by all means necessary. It's this very instinct that can prohibit us from obtaining this 'utopian' society that we strive so hard to obtain. In societies like the one depicted in Drowned cities, where there is little impact from the people and the only action comes from the military or government, malicious intent can tend to rise. It's as if it magnifies this urge, to acquire control and seek power in times of turmoil and insecurity. In Drowned cities Paolo Bacigalupi depicts what this very society would look like by putting us in the shoes of war torn girl named mahlia, living in a dark malicious time. This can be a game of perspective, those at the top could very well view the society as their own utopia, but to those at the bottom it could be their version of hell. ... The War Experience in Italian Film Essay The War Experience in Italian Film The experience of war as it is presented throughout the history of Italian cinema is a uniquely composite display of historical reverence and cultural consecration. An analysis of this experience in all of its manifestations can be discerned from the evaluation of one or several works from the post– World War II period within the corpus of the Italian cultural signification. It follows from this approach that the essence of the results of this analysis will then represent an appreciative grasp of the aforementioned corpus. The film, which contains moments ranging from dark comedy to poignant melodrama, also relies on stock documentary footage and intimate battle sequences to supplement the enthralling story. The narrative progression of the film carries through effortlessly, and is accompanied by rhetorically inventive dialogue and character associations that operate on the allegorical level. For instance, one scene in which a group of Nazi officials murder a sheep operates metaphorically to link Christianity to communism while simultaneously equating the fascists with butchers of the innocent. (Forgacs 9– 45) Concomitant with this method of scrutinizing the film, many of the characters' names are subject to onomastics. Giorgio Manfredi, who later in the film changes his identity to Giovanni Episcopo, is switched from association with St. George (typically shown slaying a dragon) to St. John (the martyred priest of ancient Rome). The priest, Pietro Pellegrini, is translated as Peter Pilgrim. He is associated, by virtue of his name, with the side of good and in the dominion of religion represents a modern analog of St. Peter (A martyr who was put to death during the Roman persecutions). • 37. Paolo Veronese Mannerism is a period of European art that bridges concepts from both the idealized style of Renaissance art and the melodramatic theatrics of the Baroque. One of the most prominent Italian painters of this period is Paolo Veronese, who studied under Titan and earned the title of a master colorist. Some of Veronese's works are on campus as part of the Blanton Museum's Suida–Manning collection. Annunciation is a mannerist painting by Veronese in this collection, whose title refers to the announcement of the Incarnation by the angel Gabriel to Virgin Mary of her conception of Christ. • 39. Analysis Of Chaucer 's ' The Canterbury Tales ' Understanding the sources for a particular work is an important task for literary critics, because it ultimately leads to a better understanding and appreciation of the work itself. Sometimes similarities are so weak as to strain the credulity of theories propounding influence. At other times, the ties are so strong that influence is near certain. However, regardless of the strength of such ties, the alterations made to an original source are very potent cues as to authorial intention. In composing The Canterbury Tales, there is a broad diversity of tales told by a wide range of narrators. This indicates that Chaucer likely used a wide variety of sources. The alterations made by Chaucer to the source material for the Clerk's Tale, including Boccaccio's Decameron X, or "The Story of Griselda," indicate Chaucer's motive to examine issues such as marriage as was found in Renaissance Italy, and to explore the state of mind of the Marquis, as well as Griselda. Chaucer not only layers psychological depth to Boccaccio's tale, but also adds to its traditional veneration of the obedient and tractable wife a genuine admiration for women in general. Much critical ink has been spilled contesting the power of influence Boccaccio's work in the Decameron had over Chaucer in writing The Canterbury Tales. Indeed, though the two works diverge in both plot and subject, they also possess strong similarities. These convergences have led readers to presume that Chaucer engaged in heavy ... Death Of The Chaucer 's The Canterbury Tales Essay As a lurking shadow prowling throughout a novel or a moral fate waiting for the outcome of a situation, death is an element in which there is no limit to what it can described as. Death has been in literature as a theme to many outcomes, such as fate, morality, fear, lessons, and more. Death can be the ending to a protagonist or antagonist who has battled through trials, but it can also be a literally element to describe the battles or actions someone has faced. Though literature describes death in many certain ways, death has no central theme. A theme can be pulled out of a story, such as a moral lesson leading towards death or fear of accepting death into life, but overall death can never be defined as only one central theme. Death itself can be used to show what the meaning is in life, as it has no limit to what it can be used to label. In Geoffrey Chaucer's, The Canterbury Tales, the Pardoner describes a tale full of greed, gambling, and drunkenness to explain the morality of fate leading towards death. In a town full of young, drunken people, three of the men overhear about a funeral. One of the servants explains to the group that one of their friends was killed last night by a mysterious figured, referred to as Death. Mannerist Paintings Paintings from the High Renaissance and Mannerist Period Mannerism emerged and rejected the classical Greco–Roman art in the 1520s, which constituted to the Renaissance era. The Mannerist works challenged the Renaissance style and the interest in human anatomy, perspective, and proportion (Kleiner 600). In contrast to the Late Renaissance painters where they were inclined to create naturalistic art, Mannerist painters honed in creating art that was unrealistic by portraying ambiguous space, unusual presentations of traditional themes, and removing the limitations of expected conventions (Kleiner 643). Bacigalupi creates strong character development with Nailer. He starts out the book with Nailer being afraid of his father and is sceptical of killing and the subject of death. But once he sees Blue Eyes get killed he realizes that killing is essential to survive in his world. In the beginning of the story one of his light crew members, Sloth, doesn't help him out of a oil tanker. Nailer is forced to do it himself, and is ready to die. But then he realizes that he must man up and get out of the tanker. This is where Nailers determination, later in the story, comes from. Whilst reading the story you will feel like it has gone by fast. This has to do with Bacigalupi's writing. He writes in a very fast paced way, but when he needs to slow down and focus on something he will. • 63. Summary Of Paolo De Matteis'sThe Adoration Of The Shepherds Paolo de Matteis's esteemed work The Adoration of the Shepherds is a large painting, depicting a classic Christian Nativity scene, that is displayed in the Dallas Museum of Art. In the piece, a dozen or so individuals surround the newborn Christ and his parents, gazing at him in admiration and paying him homage while animals look serenely on and angels assemble around the heads of the Holy Family. The artist employs several classic artistic elements in his painting, such as line, light, color, and shape, to draw the viewer's focus directly to his intended point of emphasis, the infant Jesus. One of the most effective principles Paolo de Matteis uses in this painting is his use of lines and invisible lines to direct the viewer's attention to the child in his mother's arms. The shepherds and their animals, the Virgin Mary, and Saint Joseph are all instances of invisible lines in this painting, as their outstretched hands and lines of vision are all pointing to the baby Jesus. For example, the three women and the child kneeling to the bottom right side of the manger are all staring or pointing to the upper left, toward Jesus. Moving to the upper right corner of the painting, the ox and the donkey are directing their gaze to the bottom left, once again at Jesus. The two men to the right of the animals also point in that direction. In the top and center, Mary and Joseph watch their child, creating yet another invisible line pointing toward the point of emphasis, while the angels ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the novel we see how Nailer grows from the abuse at home and finds a new family with loyalty and no blood bond, blood does not define family. Nailer finds friends that love and care for him. The etching depicts the inside space of the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, located in Rome, at an elevated point of view from the narthex of the structure facing the apse located at the end of the nave. The detail effectively illustrates and emphasizes the storytelling components of the decoration, the sculpture, and the ornateness of the interior space, something not possible for a less detail oriented medium. The detail of the architecture shows the superiority of the building compared to other structures in Rome, and the value placed on honoring Saint Paul. The storytelling artwork and portraiture which leads to the grand portrait of Jesus Christ is also a component of the interior space which the medium allowed to shine through, further informing the viewer on the purpose of the structure. The detail in the artwork expresses its importance in the church's service to a society of extremely low literacy rates to teach religious stories and values. • 73. Fear And Poverty In Ship Breaker By Paolo Bacigalupi In a world full of issues such as poverty everyone is just trying to survive to keep their families safe. Life is already hard on its own but when thrown issues such as poverty it just makes it harder. Paolo Bacigalupi displays the money issues people are facing when two kids from different socioeconomic rankings clash in the book Ship Breaker. When Nita and Nailer who have two very different lives meet their perspective on life changes. Nita opens her eyes to what is going on in the world when she goes from living her swanky life to living in fear and poverty. The book Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi demonstrates how people in a higher socioeconomic status have more appreciation for life when they experience poverty first hand. At the beginning of the book Ship Breaker, two teenagers with two totally different socioeconomic rankings realize how different their lives really are when they encounter each other. After the hurricane on Bright Sands Beach,a boy who is living in poverty named Nailer finds a huge clipper ship which belongs to a wealthy teenager. The wealthy teenager the ship belonged to is named Nita and her ship crashed during the hurricane when running away from her enemies. Nita needs help getting back to her father and if Nailer helps her she will help him with his poverty problems in return. Nailer then grasped the fact that "some people were born lucky and sailed on clipper ships, and then there were beach rats like him and Pima [Nailer's friend and co ship breaker]" (Bacigalupi 76). This quote is very significant to the theme because it represents the swankey life Nita has and the impoverished life Nailer and Pima have. The quote " the prevalence of extreme poverty in the United States may shock many" from the article "The Rise of Extreme Poverty In the United States"by H Luke Shaefer and Kathryn Edin is really important. This quote is really important to the claim and the quote from the book because it supports that a lot of people who are more fortunate are unaware of the other socioeconomic class and are surprised when they realize how differently they live. Nita is a perfect example for this claim because she was blinded from poverty and when she experienced it, she realized how ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Comparing The Two Stories From Joyful Strains, By Paolo... "Compare what the two stories (from Joyful Strains) suggest about gaining a sense of belonging and/or establishing an identity." Joyful Strains is a collaboration of short memoirs written by a group of expatriates about their experiences moving to Australia, and the struggles they faced that shaped them into the people they are today. Deborah Carlyon moved to Australia from her birth country of Papua New Guinea when she was 12–years–old, and has written the story 'Hidden by the Dream'. Paolo Totaro moved from Italy to Australia when she was only a child and has contributed to the book with her short story 'Pointing North'. Joyful Strains follows the authors as they explain how they navigated the process of finding a sense of belonging in Australia and establishing their own identities. In the memoir 'Pointing North', Paolo Totaro finds that despite having barely any memories of Italy and having spent most of her life in Australia, "fitting in" is not easy. Paolo Totaro pointed out that many of her hardships originated in the schoolyard – "They too figured it was too hard to pronounce, so Greasy Wog became my moniker." She noticed that throughout her child, many people overlooked her feelings and simply labelled her as a "hysterical Italian". Paolo stated that she doesn't "remember any other non–Aussie kids at school" and wondered whether she would have felt as if she belonged if she were not the only foreigner. She found that as others treated her as an outsider, she clung ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
