Project Management for Nation Building
At the outset …….
• Pune is very good blend of manufacturing and
services hub and Mumbai is the Financial Capital
• Joint conference between Pune and Mumbai
Chapters will be of great value-add to the
participants
• Participants can contribute for evangelizing PMI’s
3PM standards and best practices for nation
building in various forums
• “Make in India”- An initiative focuses on building
India’s both manufacturing and services sector
Challenges in building India ….
 India had fallen to 134th rank out of 189 countries) in
the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business rankings
 Currently, it takes 12 procedures and 27 days to start
business, 35 procedures and 168 days to get
construction permits and 1420 days to enforce
contracts in India.
 Manufacturing value added as a share of GDP in 2013
is 12.89% which is lower than Pakistan (13.89%) and
Bangladesh (17.55%)
 India’s chronic infrastructure and logistics deficit with
inefficient transport networks makes it tough for
manufacturing companies to achieve just-in-time
production

need to be enhanced to 25% by
2022 for creating more job
opportunities
• India rich in natural resources
• Labor is aplenty and skilled labor is
easily available given the high rates
of unemployment
• India is soon becoming the
preferred manufacturing destination
of most investors across the globe
Make in India – Services Sector
• India has the second fastest growing
services sector in the world with at 9 per
cent,
• Access to banking services
 Expanding the penetration of
banking infrastructure into rural
areas to make access easier and
more affordable for account holders
 Potential solutions include creating
low-cost service models that offer
incentives to telecom providers,
banks, and payment providers
• Use of technology-enabled solutions
Make in India - – Right time to get in
 An index of manufacturing costs by the
Boston Consulting Group shows China’s
traditional cost advantage is now under
pressure
 Just-in data from the International
Monetary Fund show that China is no
longer the largest trade surplus economy
in the world
 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes
average labor compensation in India’s
manufacturing sector is $1.50 an hour in
2014 vis-à-vis 3$ an hour in China
 A nearly 500-million-strong labor force
comprising unskilled workers and
English-speaking scientists, researchers,
and engineers
Is Make in India Enough ???

Project Management in Building Nation
• Contribute in reducing rate of project failures with better planning,
execution and control of projects
– 60% projects are plagued by time (around 50%) and cost
overruns (around 23%)
– India could suffer loss of US$ 200 billion in fiscal year 2017 –

• Roads, railways, and power would result in a cost overrun of `Rs.
1.24 lakh crore – MOSPI
