Recce: Location Scouting for Film and Video Productions
1.
2. Recce is a word that is used in the media for pre-
production to think of good locations that would be
suitable for filming. Information recorded would be
such things like potential lighting and audio issues.
The word it self is derived from the word
reconnaissance which is a term that is used in the
military for scouting an area.
3.
4. After the producers and other members of a
production team have decided on the type of
scenery that their film/video will have they
then take that information into the field to
find a area that matches the recce’s specific
details. The “scouting team” will also look for
spectacular areas that could also be good in
the film/video as well. They will also take
pictures or notes of areas they find for
reference.
5.
6. Most producers use experts in a chosen field
while planning their production to help with
the details, an example of this would be if the
BBC were making a documentary on a pack
of dire wolves, they would get in touch with
experts on dire wolves so they can get closer
footage on dire wolves in their habitat
without the hassle of tracking them down or
the danger of being attacked due to
mistakes.
7.
8. The producer must find people to work on
specific projects and he/she will most likely
find some of these individuals using media
employment agencies, examples of a media
employment agency is the company “the
candidate” works with media companies by
providing people to work on their
productions. This is useful to producers when
they are trying to find someone with a
specific trait/ tallent.
9.
10. The treatment is a highly detailed large amount of
information of how the production will be made
and what will be needed, things included in the
treatment are equipment needed, budget needed,
actors, possible hazards , locations for filming, list of
people in production team, script, time scales , a
detailed version of what the production is about and
what happens.
11. Here is an example of a detailed version of what my short film from last year was about, this is something usually
found in the treatment of any film/production.
12. This is where the production team must
consider possible legal issues from copy right
issues to filming on foreign counties without
consent of that countries government.The
production team must go through all legal
procedures to avoid being taken to court.
Other things that must be looked out for in
this process is things like brands used in the
production, music used having loyalty rights.
13.
14. Market research in the media is when you
search for info in a certain area of the media,
e.g. imagine a person is making a new app
and wants to make their app more appealing
towards specific people, they would look for
similar apps that have been successful and
gain an idea of what they could do to improve
their app, another reason for market research
is to see what competition is currently out
there.
