What are the requirements for making a digital
media product?
Logistics and cost
Within logistics there are many considerations that need to be accounted for in
order to makea good digital media product. For example: A site survey would
need to be completed to ensurethe safety of the cast and crew for when they
are filming. This is importantbecause if any of the cast or crew get injured
whilst shooting the company may get sued if they don’t do a health and safety
check. Another logistic that needs to be accounted for is, the location survey.
This is an importanttask that needs to be completed because the location
must meet certain criteria depending on wherethe film is set and whatis
needed within the scene, all aspects of the filming may depend on location. For
example dessertlocation/seaside scene. The set needs to be related to the
media product becauseif the set doesn’tmatch the media product it will not
make senseto the audience. Additionally, light plot plan is another logistic that
needs to be completed in order to make surethat all the lighting requirements
and criteria for the lighting when filming are met. Finally, the last logistic that
will help to make a good media productis camera plot plan. This is when the
camera crew decides what the best camera angles are and where bestto place
the equipment and cameras in order to get the best coverageand camera
angles for the film or media product.
Adherence to codes of practice and regulation
Within adherence to codes of practice and regulation there are certain criteria
that needs to be completed in order to produce a good media product. The
firstthing is to check the safety of the studio and location sets to make sure
that there are no dangers or hazards thatcould harm someone. If this is not
checked then the media company may be liable to someone suing them if they
are injured on the site wherethe media productwill be filmed. They will be
covered if the media company has a health and safety regulation in place,
which includes defining responsibilities and duties, having a system for
managing health and safety, assess and managerisks and regularly reviewing
the processes and procedures for managing risk. Having thesein place will
ensurethe safety of the cast and crew. Additionally, another important part to
the codes of practice is copyrightclearance. This is very important becauseif a
media company uses a sound track which was written by someone else and
didn’t have their permission they are copywriting their work and they could be
sued. One of the main processes that needs to be completed within adherence
to codes of practice and regulation is Ofcomregulations. This is important
because the media productneeds to be suitable for the public to watch and
has to meet the Ofcomregulation requirements, in order to be approved and
suitable for the public to watch.
Finance
Cost is another important variable when trying to make a good media product
because if a company doesn’thave enough money they will not be able to
complete filming. A good way to manage money is to have a budget. This will
help the company to savemoney because the company will not haveto
purchaseanything that is not needed for the media product. The media
productwill haveto be funded by a company and will need money in order to
achieve a creative and well produced media product. There are many ways to
get funded when shooting a media product which will depend on the sizeof
the media productand how much it will make. The firstway is to get a loan
fromthe bank, this will mean that the company will havepresented a budget
to the bank in order to require a loan. The budget will show the bank that the
media product will not go over the loan because of having an organized budget
in place to stop any unneeded purchases. Another way is to get grant money
which will help the media productstart the process of making the film. In
addition to this a company can get kick start funding which will allow the
company to get started quickly, furthermoreyou may get the backing of a
private investor for your media product. If a media product runs outof funding
whilst they are shooting the productor preparing to shoot, it will be left
uncompleted due to lack of funds and will wait until the company can afford to
continue with producing the media product. Clever budgeting can mean that
some media companies have used the same set in different films. An example
of this: Tomb Raider and Sherlock Holmes were both filmed on location at
Hatfield manor. When budgeting cost of location needs to be considered for
example if an area of land is owned the media company will have to pay to film
in a certain place or area. Additionally the cost for the cast, crew and
equipment to be shipped to that location, will need to be considered. In
addition to the media company paying to use an area or place they may have
to build a set to meet the scene requirements, this will take time, materials
and money to build. Another variable which is related to finance is the cost of
the cast, equipment and crew. This is an important consideration to take into
account for because high profile actors will come at a cost, so some companies
may consider using less well known actors. Depending on whether your budget
is for a low quality or high quality media productwill depend on how much you
will budget for your equipment and technology costs.
Technical and creative roles
Itis the directors job to make surethat everyoneknows their job title and
what is expected of them in order to produce the media product. The director
will need to consider the many roles within the pre-production work, such as a
scriptwriter, storyboard planner, costumedesigner, make up artistand many
more. Another technical and creative role is the responsibility for the position
within the scene. This is when the director decides where the actors will stand
whilst they are shooting the scene, the director will also talk to the camera and
lighting crew to see what the best outcome will be if the set is laid out in a
certain way and they will make a decision based upon the best position within
the set. Specialist equipment will need to be used in order to get the best
outcome for the media product. Some examples of specialist equipment are
camera lenses, field monitors, recorders and panel lighting, these are justa
shortlist of equipment which is needed to achieve a good media product.
Within creative and technical roles props, costumeand make up haveto be
designed and presented to the director so that the media product can relate to
the storyboard in order to show the audience the characters that are
portrayed in the product. An example of this can be clearly identified in the
action film Avengers wherethey usecertain props, costumeand
makeup in order to build up the characters persona.
What is the format and purpose for a pre –
production documentation?
Time the filming
starts.
Contactsof the
directorand
producer.
Locationof where
the filmingistaking
place.
Thisis the schedule for
the day, itshowswhat
time certainthingsare
happening.
Numberof days
filmingthe media
product.
Weatherforthe day.
Timingsforthe day and
whenthe cast and crew
can arrive and leave.
The function of a media call sheet is to inform the cast and crew about whatis
happening on that day of filming. Itincludes the scheduleof the day, when the
filming will start, the location of the set, and the contacts of the producer and
director. The firstexample of a media call sheet is a well produced document
because it is laid out neatly and shows information aboutthe day and whatis
happening and where it will happen. The layout of a media call sheet is
important becauseit needs to be very clear to read and understand in case
there is a problem on the set. A media call sheet should be universal to all
media companies and allow them to understand what type of document it is
because of there being a certain way that it needs to look.
This is an example of a bad media call
sheet because it is a basic design and it
doesn’tgive any additional information
about whatwill happen during the day of
filming.
This is a good example of a media risk assessmentbecauseit identifies the
hazards and explains whatmeasures need to be taken in order to prevent
certain risks when filming. This is required when making a media product
because it prevents people from getting hurt and from the company getting
sued. This document is time consuming becausethere are so many health and
safety considerations that have to be taken into account and there can be no
mistakes. The function of a media risk assessmentis to identify the risks and
hazards on the site wherethe media company will be filming and to lower the
risk by making the area more safe for the cast and crew to film. This is done by
checking the filming site in the mornings and evenings to makesure that there
are no hazards thatcould injure someonewhilst the media company is filming
the product. A media risk assessmentis an importantdocument because
people are at risk of getting injured and the company can be liable for getting
sued if someoneis hurt on the filming site.
This is a good example of a media storyboard becauseitshows a two page
caption of a scene which gives information about the costumes needed and
the props that the actors will have. Italso shows you whereand when there
will be a cut to another scene as well as how long each scene will be. There is
also a description of whatis happening in the scene. A full media storyboard
will be a larger document which will show all of the media productscene by
scene. This is justa small caption of what a storyboard looks like. A media
storyboard is universalso it will look the same no matter what company is
making the media product. The function of a media storyboard is very
important becauseit shows all the scenes of the film and how it will be laid out
when it comes to filming the scene. This is done so that the director can follow
the storyboard sceneby scene. Additionally, a storyboard’sfunction is to also
informthe director aboutall the information about that specific scene such as
how long the scene will be, who is in the scene and when the scenewill cut as
well as more.
This is a good example of one page of a scriptbecause it is in size12 and uses
the courier new fontwhich looks like an old typewriter as well as having a slug
line, which should have no morethan three pieces of information. There are
universalrules which are very importantwhen it comes to writing a script,
some basic rules are: keeping title pages simple, only usefade in and out at the
beginning and end of your script, little to no camera directions and dialogue
never follows the slug line. Scripts are used by all the cast and crew members
during the pre-production and production stages of making a media product
because they can be revised and reworked in order to get the perfect scene.
The function of a media script is to inform the castand crew about what lines
the actors say when filming a scene. This is shown in the scriptby having the
actor’s name next to the line that they say. Furthermore, thedirector will
discuss with the cast and crew about what is happening in that scene when an
actor says a specific line. For example when a specific line is said the camera
may cut to another actor.
What makes a good media product?
To conclude, a well produced media productneeds to ensurethat there are
technical and creative roles which will allow the media productto get the best
camera angles for the shots, having the bestequipment to film the media
productas well as creative costumes and props that relate to the product.
Additionally, finance is importantwhen producing a media product because
the company needs to be well organized with a budget so that they don’t
wasteall their money on items that are not needed for the media product.
Codes of practice and regulations are also very important becausethe media
company needs to have the correct paper work which will insurethat the cast
and crew are protected when they are on the set. The company will also need
to have the correctclearance for copywritewhich will stop the company from
getting sued. Furthermore, logistics is also important when making a media
productbecause site surveys and location research will allow the media
productto have the best location. Camera and light plot plans will help the
director to get the best shotwhen filming the productbecause of having a plan
of the best positions to shootfrom within the set. The pre-production
documentation is also a key aspect when producing a media productbecause
the director can follow the documentation step by step when filming the
product. For example on a storyboard thedirector knows what is happening in
each scene and how long each scene will be thereforethe director can follow it
exactly from the document. The pre-production documentation will inform the
cast and crew about the time schedule on set becausehaving a well produced
call sheet will give information about the scenes being filmed, timings of the
day as well as weather and more information aboutthe day. To make a
creative and well produced media productthe pre-production requirements
and documentation listed above need to be completed to a high standard in
order for the productto be successful.

The layout of a media call sheet is important becauseit needs to be very clear to read and understand in case there is a problem on the set. A media call sheet should be universal to all media companies and allow them to understand what type of document it is because of there being a certain way that it needs to look. This is an example of a bad media call sheet because it is a basic design and it doesn’tgive any additional information about whatwill happen during the day of filming.
  • 6. This is a good example of a media risk assessmentbecauseit identifies the hazards and explains whatmeasures need to be taken in order to prevent certain risks when filming. This is required when making a media product because it prevents people from getting hurt and from the company getting sued. This document is time consuming becausethere are so many health and safety considerations that have to be taken into account and there can be no mistakes. The function of a media risk assessmentis to identify the risks and hazards on the site wherethe media company will be filming and to lower the risk by making the area more safe for the cast and crew to film. Italso shows you whereand when there will be a cut to another scene as well as how long each scene will be. There is also a description of whatis happening in the scene. A full media storyboard will be a larger document which will show all of the media productscene by scene. This is justa small caption of what a storyboard looks like. • 8. This is a good example of one page of a scriptbecause it is in size12 and uses the courier new fontwhich looks like an old typewriter as well as having a slug line, which should have no morethan three pieces of information. There are universalrules which are very importantwhen it comes to writing a script, some basic rules are: keeping title pages simple, only usefade in and out at the beginning and end of your script, little to no camera directions and dialogue never follows the slug line. Scripts are used by all the cast and crew members during the pre-production and production stages of making a media product because they can be revised and reworked in order to get the perfect scene. The function of a media script is to inform the castand crew about what lines the actors say when filming a scene. This is shown in the scriptby having the actor’s name next to the line that they say. Furthermore, thedirector will discuss with the cast and crew about what is happening in that scene when an actor says a specific line. For example when a specific line is said the camera may cut to another actor.
