Before releasingthe movie tothe cinema
theyare normallyclassifiedbyatleasttwo
Examinersusingthe publishedGuidelines.
Thisis to protectspecificscenesthatshould
not be seenbyyoungeraudience.
Examinerslookatissuessuchas
discrimination, drugs,horror, language,
imitable behaviour,sex,sexual violence,
theme andviolence whenmakingdecisions.
Theyalsoconsidercontext,the tone and
impactof a work(e.g.howit makesthe
audience feel) andeventhe release format
(forexample,asDVDs are watchedinthe
home,there isa higherriskof underage
viewing).
Therefore,every4-5years,the BBFC carries
out a majorpublicconsultationexerciseto
findoutwhat the publicthinksaboutthe
age ratingof films.Thisisto see if the BBFC
classificationmeetsthe public’sview.
For our maintask we have to considerthe BBFCratingsbecause ourgenre ishorror, so the ages
from15 andunderwouldnotbe able towatch it.The likelyratingwouldbe 15-18 year olds. Thisis
because a large proportionof horrorfilmseitherfeatureamajorityof eithergore orpsychological
horror. Inthe openingsequence we will have ascene where the protagonistwill be sittingbyherself
ina dark roomand talkingtoher self-pretendingtobe a mental girl.
