Hi this is Dave Johnson. In this presentation I'm going to explain Activity 7, Creating actionable goals related to obtaining your degree.
The purpose of this activity is for you to learn how to write goals and then to practice writing long-term, intermediate, and immediate goals. Writing goals is indispensable. To obtain a degree, especially a PhD degree, requires many years of work, and to keep your focus you need to write goals. Your long-term goal of obtaining a degree is achieved by meeting short-term goals, and short term goals can be broken down into immediate and daily goals. By meeting your daily goals, you can't help but achieve your long-term goal. This is how you can guarantee that you'll finish the course and obtain your degree. The time required to complete this activity could range from 7 to 10 hours. There are a number of videos that require you to stop, contemplate, and complete an exercise within a workbook that you're going to download. You will submit that workbook to be graded.
First you're need to go to the attackyourday.net website. The same website you used in Activity 2. Then, you need to download the Goals Writing Workbook. This is a PDF file that will allow you to type in your responses. You need to type in your responses because you're going to submit this workbook as your assignment. Then, there are a number of short videos that you're going to watch at the attackyourday website that you can see on the screen. The Introduction video will show you a formula so you can create your own roadmap and achieve the life you want. The Foundation video explains that the foundation of effective goal setting is with Unifying Principles. The Unifying Principles video explains that Step one is to prepare a list of what you value most. These are your highest priorities in life. These become your Unifying Principles and are the basis for your goals. The Writing Goals video explains who to write long-range, intermediate, and immediate goals. The Conclusion video provides a summary of writing unifying principles, long-range, intermediate, and immediate goals.
The assignments requires that you complete a workbook so first you need to download the Goals Writing Workbook. This is a PDF file that allows you to type in your responses, and you need to type in your responses because you're going to submit the workbook as your assignment. Then, you need to watch the videos, pause, and complete associated exercises in the workbook for each video. You need to fully complete and submit your Goals Writing Workbook PDF file by midnight Arizona time on Sunday.
The workbook assignment is more of a business casual exercise. However, you still must use a professional tone and use proper grammar and sentence structure. Also whenever you are referring to outside resources, you need to use APA style.
Now, here are some tips for you to complete this assignment. Make sure that you spread the work out and give yourself sufficient time. Make sure you take the time to stop the video when it says to, and do the workbook exercise. The more thought that you put into this, the more benefit you're going to receive. So, make sure that you take the time to contemplate and express your core values, which the workbook is calling your unifying principles. It's important that you link your educational goals with your unifying principles. This will help ensure that you carry through and meet your educational goals.
Make sure that you complete all of the work book exercises thoroughly. And when you write goals, make sure they contain three elements: What. For example, I want to increase my knowledge of reading scientific papers. How to measure. You need to quantify whatever it is that you want to do. For example, I want to read 4 articles. By when. You need to assign some sort of date or measure of time. For example, each week for the next eight weeks.
The instructor has four days--until Thursday--to grade and give you feedback on your Foundations assignment. Well, I look forward to receiving your assignment and hope that you put some time into this. Writing actionable goals is key to achieving worthwhile things in life. This is especially important when you try to accomplish something that spans multiple years. Be forewarned that many things are going to sidetrack you over these years. Therefore, it is important for you to formulate long-term, intermediate, and immediate goals to get you to the finish line. That way, all you have to do is make sure you accomplish your immediate goals, and you can't help but achieve your long-term goal.
