Editor's Notes
Hi this is David Johnson. In this presentation I'm going to explain activity 3, giving credit where credit is due, for the Foundations in business class.
The purpose of this activity is to learn Northcentral University's academic integrity policy, to learn how Northcentral deals with academic integrity violations, and to learn how to avoid all forms of plagiarism whether intentional or unintentional. Now, this is a challenging activity, and you're going to really need to make sure that you block out a sufficient amount of time to complete it, ranging from 10 to 13 hours. The reason why this is challenging is 1), you have to learn how to paraphrase and quote using APA, and this may be new to some of you. 2) You need to read two book chapters and then compare and contrast them. And 3), you need to write a 2 to 3 page paper in which you compare and contrast the two chapters and paraphrase and quote properly using APA. All of this can be time-consuming but absolutely foundational for your continued learning at Northcentral. You have to learn how to write academically and how to insert and cite material from outside sources. It takes a lot of practice to learn this, and it will be something you will practice and continue to learn your whole time in academia.
Now there are a number of readings that you're going to have to do. There's the Northccentral academic integrity policy, the academic integrity tutorial, and the academic integrity questionnaire. It’s important that you fully understand Northcentral's academic integrity policy. In the Writing Center there's a number of readings for you to look at. There is successful versus unsuccessful paraphrases. There is the basics of APA style and frequently asked questions about APA style. And finally there are two book chapters from a book by Jeffrey Krames. One chapter is about Michael Dell, and another chapter is about Andy Grove. Michael Dell founded Dell computers, and Andy Grove cofounded Intel.
The graded assignment for this activity is for you to write a 2 to 3 page paper, doublespaced. You need to keep it within the confines of 2 to 3 pages. Do not exceed this number. You're going to need to cite correctly using APA. And then I will be comparing your paper with it text comparison program called Turnitin to make sure that there aren't any plagiarism issues. The deadline for this assignment is midnight, Arizona time, on Sunday.
Now here is what your paper must include, and I would suggest you use these as headings in your paper. First, you need to identify the two men and briefly describe their contributions to the field. Then, you're going to need to discuss any resistance that they encountered presenting their research ideas or programs. Then, you're going to discuss any similarities you see in their professional stories. Then, you're going to discuss how each of them differed. And finally, you’re going to discuss what factors you think may have impacted their success. These factors could be environmental, professional, or personal.
I will provide an example paper using two other chapters in the book about Jack Welch of GE and Bill Gates of Microsoft. You can use this as a model and use the overall organization and headings provided. You’ll notice that I provide an introduction, five headings (Introduction of Professionals and Their Contributions, Resistance Encountered, Similarities among Professionals, Differences between Professionals, Factors Impacting Their Success) and a conclusion. I also cite using APA and provide a reference list. Look for the attachment in the Pre-Activity 3 Letter I send on Mondays. I will also provide a TurnItIn report for the example paper. Look for that attachment as well accompanying the example paper.
Here are some tips to help you complete this assignment. First, make sure you spread out the work and give yourself sufficient time. Don't put off writing this paper until Sunday; that's not a very good approach. I would suggest you do the following (and of course you can do whatever you like but this is just one way I would consider). First, just read the two book chapters. Then, go back to what the requirements are for the paper and review what content is supposed to be contained in the paper. Then, go back and reread the chapters, highlighting information that satisfies the content requirements. Then, draft the paper by first adding the five headings, then adding content and maybe note where that content came from for citation purposes. And finally, edit the paper and maybe reread the chapters to make sure you picked up everything. Then add and edit your citations. Ideally this would be spread out over multiple days. Sometimes it's good to write a draft one day, and then the next day go back and edit it.
Now before you even go about writing your paper you should consult the Writing Center Writing Handbook. Here are some topics in the handbook that could be helpful to you. I’ve found that students often make the following errors when writing. In the writing center there's a section on crafting a sentence topic for each paragraph. I find that this is often left out by students. The Writing Handbook also provide a section on crafting paragraphs using the MEAL plan. This addresses a topic that I learned from my PhD advisor, which is some of the best advice that I have received. When writing a paragraph, it's much like giving a speech. In the paragraph you should introduce what you're going to talk about, which is your topic sentence, then you should talk about it with the next 2 to 3 sentences, and finally you should conclude your paragraph by summarizing the main points that you just talked about and provide a transition to the next paragraph. That is what Northcentral calls the MEAL program. Also in the Writing Handbook there is a section on choosing to summarize, paraphrase or quote and integrating summaries, paraphrases, and quotes using APA. You may want to read over those sections as well.
Also at the writing center under resources for writers, is an APA frequently asked questions and guides and an APA style section. Finally, at the writing center is a Smartthinking tutor that can help you with your writing if you feel that writing is a weakness for you. Use my example paper as a model. I would suggest using the headings as a model for the organization of your paper
Remember the instructor has four days to grade and give you feedback on your Foundations work. Plus, your paper will be submitted to Turnitin to assess how well you have discussed your ideas using your own words and used appropriate citations. I will share the report with you so you can see how you did. I look forward to receiving your paper and believe that this is going be a very useful activity for you. It could be a bit challenging so make sure you block out enough time
