A step by step guide to report writing
Step 1 Choose your topic
If you are given a list of topics from which to choose, select the one that interests you the most or that may have relevance to your chosen career.
If you are allowed to create your own report topic choose a subject that you want to learn more about and that interests you or is a current problem in your workplace that you wish to address.
Step 2 Read the instructions relating to your assessments as set down in your Course Guide
Always check your course guide to ensure that you are clear about what you are required to do.
• When is the report due?
• How long is it?
• What is the format?
• What is the structure?
• How does this topic relate to the course?
• How does this topic relate to the current area being studied?
Step 3 Analyse the topic
Break the topic into its component parts to understand what the main issue is that must be addressed.
Report topics can usually be divided into three sections:
• Content What is the issue or problem to be addressed?
• Instruction What have you been asked to do in relation to the topic?
• Scope How has the topic been limited – is there a focus on particular organisations/ countries /year(s)?
Underline key words and draw circles around the action/instruction words.
It is really important that you understand what the instruction words are telling you to do.
Step 4 Brain storm – what do you already know about the issue?
A brainstorm is the beginning of a mind map – these random ideas can be organised into a structured mind map that will provide you with a guide for your research and your writing.
• Using your reading, lectures and your own experiences think about what you already know about the problem/issue.
• On a blank piece of paper, write down all the ideas that you think might be related to the subject under review
• Write down where you think you need to go to get information other than from books, journals websites etc. Think about who you know in business who you might be able to interview.
Step 5 Starting your research
Although you are required to read and research widely, it is better to gain an overview of the topic by firstly reading the recommended texts – don’t go straight online unless instructed to do so by your lecturer or tutor.
The texts will give you a broad understanding of .the main ideas, writers and theories associated with the issue.
By familiarising yourself with the key concepts, the next stage of your investigation will be more targeted.
Step 6 Mind mapping
A mind map is a visual way of gathering your ideas about a particular topic.
Mind maps help you to identify the main ideas and what research needs to be conducted to provide the evidence that supports these ideas.
Your mind map is a good time management resource. It will help you focus your search for information more efficiently and to organise your ideas into a coherent and logical structure when you write your .

Editor's Notes
Hi this is Dave Johnson. In this presentation I'm going to explain Activity 8, My Northcentral University success guide.
The purpose of this activity is for you to assemble your own personal Northcentral success guide, which is the signature assignment for this course. The time required for this activity can range between 11 to 15 hours. You are going to prepare a program resources, which is an annotated list of resources. You're going to create a personal success plan, which will contain a chart of skills, indication of the development of those skills, and goals to improve those skills. And finally, you’re going to create a motivation touchstone to remind you of your goals throughout your time here at North Central.
The graded assignment for this activity is a 4-6 page double-spaced paper containing the program resources and personal success plan, which I'll discuss in a moment. You also will create a motivation touchstone, which I'll also discuss in a moment. The deadline for this is midnight Arizona time on Sunday.
The program resources, which is a component of your 4-6 page paper will serve as a personal catalog of success tools you encountered in this course. You will look back over the seven previous activities and create a list of resources that you felt were important for your success. Now, these resources could include articles, websites, links, skill builders, tutorials, or any other material you gathered through your own searches. This list of resources should include the name of the resource, an explanation of how you plan to use it, and a disclosure where you can access it. You don't have to include every resource that you used in the previous seven activities, but you must include at least one or two key resources from each activity.
The other component of the 4-6 page paper that you going to write is a personal success plan. You are going to fill out a chart that you can download from the course room, and I'm displaying it in the slide here. The chart lists each skill that you’ve learned in this class, and next to each skill you will rate your success on a scale 1 to 3, with 1 as beginner, 2 as familiar, and 3 as master. Now for those skills that you rate yourself a beginner or familiar (a 1 or a 2), you need to write immediate and intermediate goals to improve those skills. Then, you need to note any additional resources or assistance that you may require. This chart can be updated throughout your education at the Northcentral.
To give you an idea of what the finished product should look like, I have done this assignment for myself but have taken the perspective as a mentor, not a student. Nevertheless, this should give you an idea of how to organize and address the assignment. I will provide this example in a document entitled “Activity 8 Example Program Resources_Personal Success Plan.doc” that I will attach to the pre-activity email I send on the Monday of Activity 8 week. In this document, I have prepared a Program Resources section and a Personal Success Plan section. You also will combine both of these sections into 1 document.
To help you complete the Program Resources section of the paper, I have compiled a list of resources that we have provided over the eight weeks of this course. I will provide this in a document entitled “Activity 8 List of NCU Supplied Resources.doc” that I will attach to the pre-activity email I send on the Monday of Activity 8 week. You can pick a couple of resources from each activity to write about in your paper. You can also use resources you have personally located to write about too.
Lastly, your assignment will require you to create what we call a motivation touchstone. This is some physical representation of your professional and educational goals that can remain visible to you, will keep you motivated throughout your education at North Central, and will keep your eyes on your ultimate goal of graduating. Now, this physical representation can be a video that you create, or a PowerPoint that you create, an audio file, a collage, a poem, a letter to yourself, or a saying or quote. It's up to you. You create something that will be meaningful to you and that you can post someplace to remind yourself.
To give you an idea of what the finished product should look like for the motivation touchstones, I have prepared one for myself. I will provide this in a document entitled “Activity 8 Example Motivation Touchstone.doc” that I will attach to the pre-activity email I send on the Monday of Activity 8 week. I provided several quotes from the Bible. Of course, you can provide something different as I discussed earlier.
Here are some tips to help you complete this assignment. Number one, make sure you spread out the work and give yourself sufficient time. Then, you're going to need to submit two files for grading. One file is your 4 to 6 page paper that will contain the program resources and personal success plan sections. The second file is the motivation touchstone that you create.
Now for the program resources, make sure that you include at least one or two key resources from each activity. For the personal success plan where you have rated yourself a 1 or 2, make sure that you write immediate and intermediate goals to improve those skills. Remember that a goal should include what, how to measure, and by when. Also remember to include any additional resources or assistance that you may need for each skill rated a one or two.
To get an idea of what the finished product should look like for this assignment, read the following examples that I attach in the preactivity email to get an idea of the finished product: Activity 8 Example Program Resources_Personal Success Plan.doc Activity 8 List of NCU Supplied Resources.doc Activity 8 Example Motivation Touchstone.doc
