Soil Conservation In South Texas
1. Soil Conservation In South Texas
What is soil? Soil is a mixture of broken rocks, minerals, living organisms, and decaying matter.
Look around you; do you think that we need soil in our everyday lives? Sure we do. Natural flowing
water is filtered through the soil thus making it drinkable. We breathe the air that is produced by
plants that grow in soil. Our clothes wouldn't be made if the cotton plant had no soil to grow in. Did
you know that soil makes up the outermost layer of our planet? Texas is home to more than 1,000
different kinds of soil which are classified into 9 soil orders. Out of the 1,000 types of soil only 6%
are able to sustain crop life. In South Texas the most common type of soil is sandy loom soil which
is classified as a molliols. Sandy loom soil ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
No till farming uses double–disc openers to cut out the last crop planted and dropping the new seed
in its place. This farming technique does not disturb the soil as much as normal tilling. Many soil
conservationists argue that soil tillage destroys the aggregation and microorganism of the soil. This
in later terms reduces the sustainability of our food production and reduces the intake of water by
the crop. No till farming benefits all farmers when used with cover crop, crop rotation or
windbreaks.
It may seem like we will never run out of soil, but soil conservation is a critical issue in Texas today.
So if the entire farming community implemented at least one type of soil conservation effort we
would widely improve our agriculture benefits. These benefits would include saving energy, by
using less diesel fuel for tractors. Implementation of these farming practices could save water and
reduce several types of diseases and pests that farmers encounter when planting their crops. This is
no time to be cutting corners on expenses because the United States spends about $37.6 billion each
year on soil

3. Essay On Racism In South Texas
Racism in South Texas Creates Edcouch Elsa Walkouts and Pharr Riots
Believe it or not, living so close to the Mexican–American border one wouldn't think that there was
racism in South Texas. Due to the racism in South Texas, some unfortunate events were the result of
it. Examples of this were the Edcouch Elsa Walkouts and Pharr Riots. Segregation to Mexican–
American students in school was one of the issues that created a rebellion in the Edcouch–Elsa
School District. Another stressful event that arises due to racism was the Pharr riots of 1971.
However, due to these unfortunate events there were some accomplishments and equality was
achieved over the years.
The failure of the school's principal to call a board meeting to hear student's list of concerns, was the
result of the walkout of students at Edcouch–Elsa School. Furthermore, some concerns were drawn
up by students in regards to the policy and conditions in the school. The Mexican–American
students threw the doors open of classrooms and left the school to protest their anger. All of this was
due to the increased school policy segregation of race. Examples of this, the High school classes
were organized according to race and students were not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

students and for the rest of their culture. Now, schools offer Bilingual Services to students which

were also a historical event and life changing for Hispanics. Unfortunately, it involved a death when
fight for their equality. The city of Pharr improved, their mayor resigned and it was when the first
Mexican–American city mayor was elected. The elected offices were dominated by Mexican–

5. Movement And Push Pull Factors Of The Human Environment
Human Environment Interaction:
In all of the places that both sides of my family have lived they've mostly had jobs in agriculture.
They interact with the environment by using the land to grow crops and to graze their animals. This
has most likely led to some desertification in Mexico and south Texas.
Movement & Push Pull Factors:
Alice– Alice attracted parts of my family for its factories, and the agriculture business there.
Pharr–Pharr attracted my parents for the myriad of banks and small business at the time.
Edinburg–Edinburg provided good jobs, and a decent public education system for my sisters and I.
McAllen–Attracted my family for its proximity to my grandparent's ranch, and still gave them all
the opportunities as new American citizens.
San Antonio–My grandparents moved there because there was more machine work available.
Tamaulipas–Tamaulipas did not necessarily draw my family to it, it more so nudged them away.
They felt as though there were not enough jobs in the state to support them.
Oaxaca–Like Tamaulipas, it did not keep my family there, they moved away to find better jobs.
History:
Alice–After the Mexican American war, beef became scarce in the north (Salinas). This established
Alice as "the cradle of the cattle industry" (South Texas Traveler).
Pharr– Pharr drew national attention in February 1971, when Mexican American civil rights
demonstrators were fired on by local police officers (the so–called "Pharr Police Riot"). ("Pharr")

7. Civil War: Politics In Texas In 1860
POLITICS IN TEXAS BEFORE SECESSION
Texas seceded from the Union in early 1861, like many other slaveholding states, and joined the
Confederate States of America. It was the last to secede before the firing Battle of Fort Sumter
signaled the beginning of the Civil War and made citizens of the upper South to choose between
fighting against or with their Southern peers. The election of Abraham Lincoln, as well as the
threatening of slavery and traditional liberties due to Republican control of the executive branch
furthered the secession crisis in Texas. Texas secessionists were further encouraged by South
Carolina's decision to secede from the Unions. Some Texans took a while to accept secession, and
some never accepted it. The timing of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whether it was because the danger to slavery that was associated with the Republican party
threatened the economy, or because white Texans couldn't tolerate racial equality with black Texans,
secession became a very charged issue. The emotion came to a peak in January and February 1861,
when a convention met in Austin and voted to secede. Opponents of secession spoke out on the day
before the secession referendum. Most of them probably didn't vote. On February 23, 1861, citizens
went to the polls and voted for or against secession. The results a whole were 46,153 for secession

9. Texas Instruments in South Korea
Texas Instruments in South Korea Understanding a target market's needs and desires can assist
companies with tailoring their offerings in the name of profit. Texas Instruments (TI) had been
business since 1930. During this time they have reinvented their offerings to remain a viable
business entity throughout the decades. Their ability to stay ahead of the change curve has translated
into a current market cap value of approximately $47 billion ("Yahoo finance," 2014). Whether it is
calculators, semiconductors, software or education materials TI has been able to continually
transformed itself using a strategy predicated on "risk taking and innovation" ("Texas instruments,"
2014). It is this culture of risk taking that has TI ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This could lead to missed opportunities. The formal institutions are represented by regulations, rules
or bylaws that can be readily researched. Within a new country TI must account for the South
Korean government and the educational branch. Government rules and requirements for operating
within the country need to be understood prior to dealing with local businesses. Failure to
understand these barriers to entry can limit a firm's ability to conduct business within the desired
country of operations.
The informal institutions can be more difficult to research. To account for this TI can identify and
hire experts to assist with acquiring the informal knowledge. Informal institutions represent the
norms, cultures and ethics when dealing with societies. Without a solid understanding of cultural
norms or expectations, TI's business proposition can offend. A main informal challenge for TI is the
regionalism that exists. South Korea can be dissected into two distinct regions the Kyongsang
Province (southeast) and Cholla Province (southwest). Both regions have distinct differences
("Culture of south," 2014). Another informal consideration surrounds gender status. Although South
Korea's constitution stipulates men and women as equals the ideology practiced is one of male
superiority ("Culture of south," 2014). This

11. The Pros And Cons Of The Annexation Of Texas
The annexation of Texas in the 1840s had many advantages and disadvantages to our country. The
divisions between those who supported and opposed this annexation were divided, mainly between
the North and South and those representatives supporting each area of the nation. Southerners saw
the acquisition of Texas as a way to expand our nation, spread slavery in the South to help empower
them, and provide a place for the immigrants pressing the borders of our country. The North did not
want Texas to cause the South to overpower them, they feared a war with Mexico, and believed that
the growing slave population would cause the lower class of Northerners to be without work.
The 1841 death of President William Harrison led to the succession of Vice President John Tyler to
the presidency. As the new President, John Tyler, instigated the process of manifest destiny. The idea
of manifest destiny was to expand until all of North America was conquered for the United States.
The issue of the annexation of Texas became prominent because of John Tyler's need to find an issue

Many southerners, backed by John Calhoun, believed that gaining Texas would unite the South.
After Clay lost his nomination, Polk ran backing the annexation of Texas. Some believed that the
annexation of Texas would draw off unwanted slaves from those areas where the institution was
declining, which would be both beneficial to slaveholders and a relief to free–soilers who feared the
northern migration of millions of free blacks. Supporters thought that even if slavery did not succeed
in Texas, the slaves of Texas would move into Mexico and restore the Anglo–Saxon purity of the
United States. The south saw Texas as an area for free development of the multiplying population of
the nation. It would be a place to assist in the rise of immigration and would keep Britain from

13. Personal Narrative: A Day At The South Texas Food Bank
Two years ago, I was sitting in a dimly lit packing room, wedged between a stalled out pale yellow
refrigerator and a stack of boxes, packed to the brim with all sorts of canned fruits and vegetables.
People worked quickly here, moving boxes from one corner of the room to another, creating a
rhythm of sorts. Thump. Swoosh. Thump. Swoosh. The boxes left in droves as lines of people
congregated around the open warehouse door with open hands ready to accept what was offered
while statements of gratitude leapt from their tongues. The amount of people waiting outside far
outnumbered the volunteers, but the volunteers worked hard, they knew they had to today. It was
104 degrees outside and some of these people standing in line, with children in tow, had been
waiting for hours. It was distribution day at the South Texas Food Bank and I was there to help. The
South Texas Food Bank was one of the many agencies that we were working with through
Rebranding the Border, a non–profit social venture that I co–founded. Rebranding the Border, at the

17. Texas Biomes
Our ecosystem is described depending on the location we are located in. There is different plants,
animals, and environments in different environmental regions. For this paper we are focusing on the
six different biomes structures we have in the state of Texas. The first biome I am going to discuss is
the Central Prairies and Woodlands biome. This biome is located in the middle of biome 2 and 3
covering all of the coastal area from the Gulf of Mexico. The precipitation gradient in this area is the
highest in the state of Texas. Averaging from 75–115 cm/yr. this concludes that it's a high
precipitation area which means that the land in that area is green and hydrated. Since this biome
extends from the south were the coast is all the way to the top of eastern Texas the temperature
varies depending on the location you are looking at the further north its colder and the more south
you go the hotter, humid it gets. The kinds of plants that are in this regions are mostly tall green ...

animals located in this region are the eastern collared lizard, rat snake, Mexican long–tongued bat,
Texas antelope squirrel and the bighorn sheep. Now the last biome is the Western Plains located in
the North Western part of the state. This area has a moderate amount of rainfall with 40–55 cm/yr.

19. The Failure Of Reconstruction Of Texas
The Failure of Reconstruction in Texas There are many Texas myths that endured about
carpetbaggers during the failed Reconstruction era. "Carpetbaggers was generally used to describe
Northerners who moved to the south after the Civil War especially who joined state Republicans
formed in 1867" pg. 212. They were rumored to be allegedly "corrupt and dishonest adventurous
who's property could fit in a carpet bag (a soft suitcase made of carpet) who seized political power".
In this essay, I will analyze how the myth/legend came about, why the myth/legend is important to
Texas history and what implications is has for the history and memory of Texas. First, how did the
myth/legend of failures of reconstruction came about? I would suppose the myth came about from
Native Texans during the failed Reconstruction who felt that the Northerners or as they were
referred to as carpet baggers where ruining the state. This myth was unfounded because only a small
amount of judges were Northerners and in the Twelfth Legislature 12 out of 142 came from
Northern states and a very few participated in politics at the local level. Those carpetbaggers that
were in politics often didn't fit the stereotype that was given to most northerners. Most
carpetbaggers came before Republicans took power so they couldn't

21. Texas Cattle Trail Research Paper
In the years after the Civil War, Texas seemed to be the land of opportunity. Northern pioneers,
newly freed slaves, some Mexican citizens, and cattle poured into Texas. Business savvy cattlemen
acted on the high demand of beef in the United States. They assembled herds of free–ranging wild
cattle together in South Texas for drives up the trail to railhead markets in Kansas. The men who
worked on the cattle trails imagined themselves as cowboys, but never imagined the hard labor that
would follow. They left home as young, naïve, but brave men only to return after one season on the
trail toughened and wise.

23. The Path To Modern South Summary
In The Path to a Modern South, Walter L. Buenger has composed an imperative piece of work that
difficulties students of history to reexamine both the foundations of progress and modernization in
Texas and the bigger significance of these progressions. Undoubtedly, Buenger has made or co–
made four books, co–adjusted two more, and made different articles and book areas. His guideline
zones of interest have been the relationship between Texas and the south, Texas identity,
historiography, the piece of memory, the effect of edges, and the improvement and headway of
culture in the Southwest region. Considered in Texas the two sides of his family described stories
that reached out back to the War, yet his father's German Texan relatives had an unequivocally more
disillusioned point of view of that dispute than his mother's Early English family. Those stories with

In 1887, that territory nearly looked like other cotton–developing areas in the south, and in this way,
the author clarifies, fills in as a brilliant place to consider change and contrast its course and the

after numerous complex and regularly unobtrusive changes that happened in the bigger political,
monetary, and social fields. Multi–Factional legislative issues, a developing economy, and a move
from a chronicled memory committed to the Alliance to one that observed Texas' own brilliant
history, all joined (with different elements) to separate Upper East Texas. Thoughts regarding race,

was a semester that tested me as a person. Before starting the winter semester, I felt confident that I

37. The Tax Structures Of South Carolina And Texas
Abstract
In this paper I explore the relationship between the tax structures of South Carolina and Texas.
Through research into tax rates, tax brackets, and the different types of taxes used to create
government revenue in the state, I seek to explore the benefits and detriments that the differing tax
structures bring to taxpaying citizens in the state and to the business environment in each of the
states. I researched taxes placed on individuals, in state businesses, and multistate businesses. Based
on the research I concluded that Texas is the better state for business activity with a higher economic
growth projections and a top ten rating of Forbes list of top states for business. South Carolina,
however, does have benefits for multistate corporations due to a recent change in apportionment
formulas and clear Supreme Court Rulings.

money. That fact leads to a question that affects every taxpayer, what is the best method for
collecting taxes. Is it better to collect the money based on an individual or business' income? Is it
better to base the tax on how much a person spends through a sales tax? How do the different

line agreed upon in the treaty (1803) with France that includes Texas in the Louisiana Purchase.
Furthermore, John Quincy Adams confirmed this information in his negotiations with Spain in 1819.
During Slidell's trip, the United States completes the annexation of Texas into the Union in
December 1845. To further complicate things, President Polk is informed that Congressman Slidell
is unsuccessful in the negotiations. Consequently, Polk, determined for the United States to
complete the mission of owning all the land from coast to coast, America's Manifest Destiny. He
orders General Zachary Taylor to the Rio Grande. By the time Taylors arrives (March 1846) the
Mexican military is already across the border. After two engagements, one in Palo Alto and Resaca
de la Palma (now known as Brownsville), the Mexican military is unprepared and retreats (Dobbs).
Following the unit's victories, General Taylor moves into northern Mexico, the first target is the city
of Monterrey. The battle proves to be a bloody struggle with house–to–house fighting. Next in the
Battle of Buena Vista, a narrow pass between mountain ranges south of Saltillo. Taylor is up against
General Santa Anna, with majority volunteers, except for approximately 200 dragoons and artillery.

41. Epilepsy : A Growing Disorder
Introduction
Epilepsy is a growing disorder in the world. Many people tend to be unaware they have epilepsy due
to no diagnosis or believing their seizures are something simple. The epilepsy community of Texas
is in great need due to the increasing costs of medication and medical service, lack of programs for
diagnosed children and insignificant increase in education concerning epilepsy. The Epilepsy
Foundation of Texas (EFTX) and Epilepsy Foundation of Central and South Texas (EFCST) were
established in order to help patients with these types of problems. These two affiliates of the national
Epilepsy Foundation serve the entire state of Texas. Both organizations have the same mission: the
Epilepsy Foundation leads the fight to stop seizures, find a cure and overcome the challenges
created by epilepsy.
There are five hospitals and organizations that provide seizure related medical clinics within the
state of Texas (www.dshs.state.tx.us). Each serves different counties but patients have to be eligible
to take part. The criteria tend to be based on location, income, and type or lack of insurance. If the
patient doesn't meet the requirements or is unable to travel to the clinic, the lack of treatment
increases the number of people having seizures. The Epilepsy Foundation believes there are 150,000
new cases of epilepsy every year (www.epilepsy.com). Considering that Texas is the second largest
state in the United States, travel is a major issue for epilepsy patients. Many

43. William Carrigan 's Violence During The Nineteenth Century
William Carrigan describes violence in central Texas in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in
The Making of a Lynching Culture as a societally–driven solution to fear. In the 1850s and 1860s,
he says that extralegal violence is used more often because of the panic caused by increasing slave
resistance. He gives several reasons that Anglo Texans create for slave resistance, but their main
claim is that outsiders are to blame for convincing slaves to fight against slavery. In the Portal to
Texas History, there are archives of newspapers from the time, and these papers use colorful
language that displays just how desperate Anglo Texans and the South are to keep that slavery intact.
Texan slaveholders looked to others for supposed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those words are volatile when it comes to the Texas audience, and these articles that point at
Mexicans instead of slaveholders for slave resistance are useful in the defense of extralegal
violence. Because of these articles, Texas slaveholders feel like they can conceal how unhappy their
slaves are and claim that Anglo Texans are victims. Later in the aforementioned passage from
Carrigan, he explains that Anglo Texans suggested that outside forces convinced slaves to have an
uprising, which gave slaveholders the justification they needed to use extralegal violence to limit
slave resistance.
An example of Anglo Texans blaming outsiders, specifically Mexicans, can be seen in 1851. That
year, the Texas State Gazette explained that Mexico actively supported the runaway slaves, and that
Mexico fought those who visited town to claim their property. "This has so exasperated many of the
settlers at the west," the article said, "that they are determined to raise a force sufficient to
overpower all opposition, and re–capture their slaves at all hazards." This exasperation only fuels
the grudge that Anglo Texans hold toward Mexico, and will add to slaveholders' fears that their main
source of labor–and, by extension, income–could escape their grasp so easily. This fear stems back
to when Santa Anna's army marched northward in Texas after the battle at the Alamo, when Anglo

45. The Struggle Of The Civil War
Many Texans contend that the Civil War was not fought over slavery, citing the limited number of
slave–owning households in the state. While the majority of Texans did not own slaves, it would be
inaccurate to argue that they were therefore against slavery. Texas, representative of other southern
states that supported slavery, had a vested interest in preserving the institution at all costs, which is
why they risked their lives over it. Moreover, Texans may argue that the civil war was about states'
rights or defense of the southern "way of life." States' rights, though part of the equation, played a
diminished role as a whole in prompting the Civil War. Furthermore, because it revolved mostly
around slavery, the southern "way of life" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Slaves were especially needed for cotton, which was proven to be a major crop of Texas. Although
only 1/3 of Antebellum Texas had slaves, they produced over 90% of the cotton grown in Texas,
which allowed for most slave–owners to actually receive a profit, as opposed to putting their money
towards a loan in the northeast to produce the crop (Campbell 207). As a result it is clear that slavery
became a necessity for the Texas economy.
Slavery was also the main cause of the Civil War because of the political ramifications associated
with it.
The argument Texans had about the Civil War and states' rights can be defended in that the U.S.
Constitution failed to specifically address slavery. Although many of our Founding Fathers hated
slavery and spoke negatively about it, several owned slaves and relied on them. The states' rights
argument was essentially used to control votes in congress. The states' rights argument was used to
create the fear of setting an unfavorable precedent by allowing more states to enter the union
without slaves, which could mean loss of votes for the South in the U.S. Congress. If the north
expanded into the west and they were able to get more states to enter the Union, then the
Confederacy would lose the votes in the US congress. Congress could then vote to abolish slavery
throughout the Union. The concept of states' rights is a political and economical issue for the South.
If the South loses their rights to slavery then the

47. Manifest Destiny Essay
The phrase Manifest Destiny was first used by John O'Sullivan in 1845 in an edition of the United
States Magazine and Democratic Review. Manifest Destiny is the belief that the United States has
the right to have all the land from "sea to shining sea." However, Manifest Destiny changed the
United States greatly by the 1860s. Issues about slave States and people against Manifest Destiny
were brought up. The idea of Manifest Destiny created a separation in the country between people of
different ideas and it changed the landscape that belongs to the United States.
The country became divided when different people did not agree with each other when talking about
the topic of gaining more land. John O' Sullivan believed that the United States had Manifest
Destiny because they aren't connected to the past of other countries, according to document 1. The
United States can take all of that land because they aren't associated with all of the bad things that
other countries have done, so they deserve that land to use for the future, as O'Sullivan has said, "the
beginning of a new history." Some people didn't agree with taking more land, like Sumner, who was
a States legislator from MA and later served 24 years in the Senate. He didn't agree with the United
States and the citizens of the United States that they should move into Texas and later, claim it as
their own, Sumner described it a a "disgraceful robbery" in document 8. The country also became

receive food and also educate the community about the realities of hunger. It has helped more than

Foreign direct investment (FDI) represents an investment from a company into another country
either through acquisition or expansion of operations (Peng, 2014). Some countries require this as a
term for conducting business within said country. The primary advantage of such a strategy is it can
reduce cost of distributing products within a country, provide risk mitigation opportunities in the
form of dual sources and/or familiarize a company with cultural customs necessary to penetrate a
target market. Understanding a target market's culture is critical to tailoring offerings to meet
expectations. A one size fits all approach to global strategy can result in a lack of acceptance in
certain markets. An example of tailoring an offering to account for different markets is Coca Cola's
classic coke. Although the Coke brand is constant the product itself has an altered sugar content and
differing water purity depending where you are in the world ("Is the formula," 2014). This allows
them to cater the flavor to local markets.

Manifest Destiny The expansion of the United States from its thirteen original colonies to the nation
it is today was a very extensive process, involving numerous wars and treaties. The greatest one of
these expansion periods occurred from the 1830s to the 1860s, largely due to the idea of Manifest
Destiny, the belief that American settlers were destined to expand across the continent to the Pacific
coast. This development played a major role in dividing the North and the South by contributing to
contrasting ideologies of the two regions towards social and economic foundations of the new
territory, and would eventually lead up to the Civil War, literally dividing the nation into two.

British trappers, farmers, and missionaries started settling in the Oregon Country starting in the
1830s. As there was no central government in the region, the residents of the region started meeting
to discuss organizing a government for the area. This led to the American government being
concerned and encouraging American citizens to migrate to the Oregon Country in order to prevent
the British immigrants from taking over. As Thomas Hart Benton said in his speech in the U.S.
Senate: "... the Government... will give protection and land... Let the emigrants go on... they will
make all quite there... drive [the British] off our continent, quiet their Indians, and protect the
American interests..." (Document A). One of the first migrations of U.S. citizens into the area was in
1839 when a group of 18 men set out to settle the area on behalf of the American government; this
was followed by The Great Migration of 1843 when almost a thousand emigrants left for Oregon.
Following the inauguration of James K. Polk as president after the election of 1844, the border of
the Oregon Country was finally settled at 49o latitude, despite the original demand of 54o40'
latitude, in an agreement known as the Treaty Line of 1846. Emigrants flooded into the area in
thousands, partly due to the California Gold Rush which started in 1849 but brought wealth to only a
few. As more and more people migrated into the area, southerners started bringing slaves along with

55. How Did Texas Participate In The Civil War Dbq
The Civil War, a sad memorable time for Texas and America. The Civil War tore the country apart
over slavery and states' rights and led to the death of over 600,000 men. Between 1861 and 1865
about 70,000 Texans men to war. Texas fought in the war to defend states' rights, preserve slavery,
and for the love of Texas. One reason why the Texans participated in the Civil War was to defend
states` rights. They believed they had the right to make decisions on items not covered by the
constitution. Therefore, Texas secession was a states rights and was worth fighting for. Texas had
previously fought for its right to self–government. Stated in document C "Texas secession

The south wanted slavery mainly because they wanted to be able to have workers but not have to
pay them. This way the South could make more money to either buy more slaves, more land and be
able to pay their taxes. The North didn't like how the South didn't have to pay workers and the North
did. Therefore the south felt as if their economy would not survive without it. Stated in Document A
"Nearly one out of every three Texans was a slave." As well as "Twenty–nine percent of white Texas
families owned slaves." Slavery laid behind states` rights and protected Texas way of life. The main
reason Texans were willing to go to war was their love for Texas. In John Rabb's letter explains it
all, the brother should only enlist "for Texas service." Rabb announces he will only marry in Texas,
"for if I ever marry it will be in Texas." Last but not least Rabb worries about the Yankees getting

59. Analysis Of Angelina County Shared Cultural Ties With...
The stats mentioned above demonstrate that a significant number of non–slaveowners resides in
Angelina. Due to the lack of financial resources to purchase slaves, they relied on their own labors
to sustain a livelihood for their homestead creating a different economy not associated with the
plantation system. The large population of non–slaveholders, "small" farms, translates to economic
and political power within this county. McCaslin argues that since the slave population had declined
to less than half of the regional average the propaganda tactics utilized in the other counties had
little effect on this county. Voters instead listened to attorney James W. Guinn chooses "to follow the
'voice of reason,' rather than that of anarchy." Although Angelina County shared cultural ties with
other Gulf southerners they "acted within the parameters set by their environment and by their
economic system." Finally, McCaslin challenges scholars seeking understanding of Unionism they
need to study the "environment and economics, that shape political allegiances." The recent study of
these Northern counties, John R. Lundberg's article, disputes the prominent narrative for why the
North Texas counties voted against secession during the secession referendum. Most historians, for
example, Buenger, cite the reasons for voting for or against secession stems from the growing Indian
raids on the exposed frontier. Also, Houston's failure to protect the settlers from those

61. The Two Main Causes Of The Mexican-American War
While often thought of as a small and insignificant war fought by the Americans, the Mexican–
American War serves a lot of importance to the foundation and history of our country. This war
determined whether or not the United States would become a dominant power on the continent and
it, more importantly, established the size of the nation. The Mexican–American War lasted from
1846–1848, but by the time President James Polk took office in 1845, United States–Mexico
relations were already off to a bad start. The Mexican–American War was mainly caused by the idea
of 'Manifest Destiny' and the Texas War for Independence/Annexation; it was also a major turning
point in the debate over slavery in the US because of the Missouri Compromise, Compromise of
1850, and the Wilmot Proviso. The two main causes for the war were the American's obsession with
the concept and maintenance of 'Manifest Destiny' and, the second cause was, the Texas War for
Independence/Annexation. Manifest Destiny is, basically, the belief that the US had a God–given
right to occupy and civilize the whole continent. With more Americans looking for land to occupy
westward due to the fact that there wasn't enough space on the east coast, the fact that most of those
areas were occupied didn't matter. Instead, an attitude that English speaking American would do a
better job of taking care of the lands than Native Americans of Spanish Speaking Mexicans ruled the
minds of Americans. Also, the American leaders felt

In the Chapter 1 of From South Texas to the Nation by John Weber, he discusses the significance of
South Texas and its origins. The Wages of Development in South Texas and Northern Mexico is a
crucial part of the makeup of how trends in Mexico during Porfirio Diaz's regime and how the
Mexican Revolution affected migration and economic development in South Texas. This allowed for
Texas to become the foundation for the creation of one of the most productive and plentiful
agriculture. Massive demographic changes and isolated regions forced many people began to
heavily rely on wage labor and land growing. These changes were the result of the outbreak of the
Mexican Revolution because of many citizens finding themselves displaced due the war. Ultimately,
this lead to year of chaotic change and war violence that altered the economic and social future of
South Texas. The increased capitalization in South Texas spread rapidly in ranching lands into
desired farm properties. This resulted in a booming economy and social tensions within Mexican–
American farmworkers in South Texas. Overall, these changes affected South Texas residents which

Giving back to the community is a passion of mine. The most rewarding experiences in my life have
been doing what I can, to help others. As an Education major, helping children in the community is

the past two years in partnership with Junior Achievement. Volunteering with Junior Achievement
