Many considerations need to be addressed when teaching English language learners. To help
English language learners, teachers must have a basic understanding of the interferences these
students face and how they affect the ELL. Teachers have to be knowledgeable about phonological
and morphological differences with their ELL student's native language. Teachers must be aware of
their students' phonemic awareness and be able to assess their students' level of knowledge
appropriately. To be receptive to all students' needs, teachers must acknowledge them so they can
teach the student the interferences and how they work in their new language. One of the
interferences that teachers must take into consideration is the student's phonological awareness. In
the book Phonics They Use it states that phonological awareness is "the ability to separate sentences
into words and words into syllables." Whereas, phonemic awareness is "the ability to recognize that
words are made up of a discrete set of sounds and to manipulate sounds." Through the
developmental stages of a student's phonological awareness their knowledge of how words are made
up of "individual words, words are made up of syllables, and syllables are made up of phonemes (p.
5)." Some activities that build phonological awareness are segmenting, rhyme, and syllables. An

Actually, I haven't felt so happy about my English skill (Ok, my weakness is more when speaking
but is not usually when writing). I did not have to afford difficulties when responding to the quizzes.
The strong bases I learnt, as a ELL and a MODL teacher provided well results and the Folse chapter,
give me the opportunity to go further in terms of different kinds of ELL issues.
In the lottery of languages, The Spanish was given during my growth in Colombia. I recognize that I
learn Spanish grammar as a University student rather than a Basic/middle or High school students,
since the focus was different. As natives, we were educated to communicate, no much rules. But at
undergrad, during my linguistics emphasis it was a requirement to know basic grammar to start, then
to learn complex linguistics and didactics of the language (for teaching the native Speakers and the
non–native of Spanish)
I could say, firstly we, as a language teachers, should manage every single topic related to our Target
language. However, it is also necessary to know about ours. Secondly, without omitting US or
another Ed. System values, Colombian Educational system at university let us to choose our life

Once there was a time in teaching English, when teachers had mainly followed the traditional
approach of teaching in various universities, where the learner used to be dependent only on the
lecture delivered by the teacher. The learners were not exposed sufficient practice on their own and

1.1. Background of the study
English language is essential both in education field and real life situation. But in Bangladesh
"English" is treated as the second language and learners are not that much interested in
communicating in English because learners need English to get a better job. Here teachers can
motivate them by saying that fluency in English speaking can get them better jobs. But this trust will
not work every time and there is a better solution to involve learners into speaking skills indirectly
through classroom interaction. The concept of classroom interaction plays a significant role in the

The Importance Of Teaching English As A Foreign Language
Introduction
In order to effectively teach English as a foreign language it is essential to understand not only the
learners current ability level but also their desires and goals in learning a language. By combing
these two aspects, an efficient and practical lesson plan can be designed. In this case the student is
already highly proficient even fluent at times in English, and was determined to be around MM2D
level (ITTO 388). Because he studies international business, he is learning English primarily as a
potential occupational skill. Furthermore, because he is already proficient at casual speech and
understanding, it makes most sense to focus on areas he has less experience with, in this case formal
writing and occupational vocabulary as these skills will likely be essential for his future
employment.
Classroom Approach:
Given that the learner in this case is already a high level English speaker, the class will
automatically be at least party derived from the Direct Method. The Communicative Approach will
also be helpful as it stresses the importance of "authentic language usage" which in most cases is
likely the form on English that will be spoken in office settings. However the most effective strategy

Abstract
The purpose of this report is to recommend to the Winn Parish School Board the teaching method
that would be the most effective for teaching English Language Learners (ELLs). I analyzed two
available solutions: the scaffolding teaching method and the differentiated instruction teaching
method. I evaluated both teaching methods based on the flexibility in regards to allowing students'
needs to be met, ease of implementation of each teaching strategy into the classroom, and
effectiveness of how of each method helps the students learn and complete what is required of them.
My research methodology began with researching who English Language Learners are in general
and how they have begun to impact American classrooms and teachers. I also conducted general
research on the scaffolding and differentiated instruction teaching methods. After conducting my
general research, I decided which three criteria I would focus on as I performed more specific
research on my topic. I also interviewed Mrs. Jamie McLarty, a veteran Spanish teacher at Calvin
High School in Calvin, Louisiana, who has taught English Language Learners for sixteen years.
Once I gathered all of my information, I examined and analyzed it so that I could choose the
teaching method that would be the most effective for teaching English Language Learners.

Teaching English as a second language can be a difficult task and the challenges that teachers face
vary greatly from student to student and classroom to classroom. The internship working Professor
Jesse Stewart and his students from his ESL 116 class was eye opening and great opportunity to
work with students who had a range of English levels. Each student was unique in that they learned
differently, had different language backgrounds and had different language abilities but one thing
that seemed similar was the type of mistakes they were making in their papers for the class. The
errors that the students made in fact reflected the common errors that many ESL students make
everyday and though the reason for these errors is still debated in the field of linguistics the errors
themselves still tend to be similar across language backgrounds and teaching environments. The
theoretical side of this paper deals with the common errors that ESL learners make as well as the
development of literacy and writing in ESL learners, language assessment, and the importance of
ESL in Canada. Later in this paper, I will include a more practical comparison of my own

Introduction: Traveling to another country to take a course which would certify me to teach English
as a second language is something I did not picture myself doing. I always knew I wanted to work
with students, but I was never certain as to what career path I would take. Working with
international students who were eager to learn English helped me make my decision to teach
English. Taking this course has shown me that I have the ability to teach English. Throughout the
course I saw that it is not an easy task. There are many challenges that come with teaching English,

requires lots of work, they are still willing to teach. Being an English teacher or a teacher in general
is not something that you learn from one day to another. Teaching takes time, and even being a
teacher you learn something new every day whether it is from your colleagues or your students. A
good teacher knowing their position still is open to learning new things even if they are already
trained. As time goes by there are new things implemented in the school system, so that means

To help English language learners, teachers must have a basic understanding of the interferences these students face and how they affect the ELL. Teachers have to be knowledgeable about phonological and morphological differences with their ELL student's native language. Teachers must be aware of their students' phonemic awareness and be able to assess their students' level of knowledge appropriately. To be receptive to all students' needs, teachers must acknowledge them so they can teach the student the interferences and how they work in their new language.
