Activating the essence of curriculum on student’s english learning achievement
1. ACTIVATING THE ESSENCE OF CURRICULUM ON STUDENT’S
ENGLISH LEARNING ACHIEVEMENT :
A TEACHER-PARENTS COLLABORATION
Speaker : Prof.Dr.Lince Sihombing, M.Pd
1. INTRODUCTION
It is true our curriculum has been changed at least 5 times. There are two reasons of
curriculum’s change. One, to let the students completely master Bahasa Indonesia-
since it is our means of communication and two, to give students more oppurtunity to
learn English within their golden age.
Out of controversy in taking in and out this English from school curriculum. There is
one thing that our government fails to take account namely, taking students – as the
next generation to achieve as many life achievement from the first hand. English is
the main media to getevery thing right from the first hand since it is the very strong
language used to accomodate every thing – including the needed recent information.
2. Curriculum, The Heart Of Nation Education
There are many definition of curriculum. Three of them are :
a. Curriculum is those subjects that are most useful for living in contemporary
society.
b. Curriculum is all the experience learners have under the guidance of school.
c. Curriculum is totally of learning experience, provided to students so that they can
attain general skills and knowledge at a variety of learning sites.
Whenever education is conducted on the basis of teaching learning process, as the
way of having experiences and the experiences are activated by the taught subject
management. The only objrctive goverment demands is all students graduation will
harmoniously work hand in hand to strongly build Indonesia nation. Therefore the
effort of goverment in changing the curriculum again and again can be understood.
2. 3. English Curriculum Is Not The Victim Of Politics And Curriculum
Decision Making.
This is about a very good example of how a young age learner can manage the
language learning flexibly. It is simply a matter of language politics that the decision
makers of Indonesia education treated as a way of language maintenance. This
language mainttenance particularly Bahasa Indonesia language maintenance is a kind
of control and of course this is strongly supported by Whitty who states that some
people enter into curriculum deliberations openly and cooperatively, while those who
see the process as largely hostile and competitive may participate primarily to
protect their own interest.
4. Teacher’s Role In Keep Teaching Englilsh In Primary School
Many responses given by teachers to the absence of english from primary school
curriculum.
Some of teachers blamed goverment since the absence of this English from subjects to
be taught has taken away also the big amount of their income.
English is a special content. It can be handled down by managing students’ self-
awareness. Awarness about one self as a learner, a learner of English particularly help
students to allocate their personal resources, or the resourcess that are available in
their academic institution such as group study session, tutoring programs, and
learning centres.
5. Parent’s Participation In Motivating Their Children Learning
English
It cannot be denied that nowadays entertainment media such as television, radio, and
the like provide some programs that demand their watchers and listeners master
english well otherwise they cannot involve in these programs. Parents can actively use
this situation to encourage their children to learn english.
3. CONCLUSIONS:
Curriculum actually is a series of effort decided by the curriculum makers, which
consists of education practitioners to be a activated at schools in order to provide
students good oppurtunity to progress step by step, naturally. Therefore, subject
matters which should be learned by students are graded from the simple one to the
most complicated ones.
4. ENGLISH LANGUAGE POWER AND EDUCATION FOR INDUCING
CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION TO PURSUE JOB
OPPURTUNITIES
Speaker : Prof.Amrin Saragih, MA., Ph.D
There are two areas where English language has tremendeous powers, namely The
Metafunction of Language and Nuance of Meaning¸resulted from the interaction of english
language and its social contexts.
A. The Metafuction of Language
The power of language is found in the metafunction of language that is in the function
of language to fulfill needs of human beings. There are three elements of the
metafunction namely the ideational, interpersonal and textual function.
The ideational refers to the function of language to fulfill human needs in describing
or drawing experience. The ideanational function is further subdivided into the
experintal function, where language is used to represent experience and the logical
function, where language is used to relate chunks of experience in words,
groups/phrases, clauses or texts.
The second function of language is the interpersonal function, which refers to the
exchange of experience. By interpersonal function the language users exchange their
experience in terms of speech functions that is whether the speaker is making
statement, raising question, making an offer or stagung a command. Thirdly, the
power of language is in its capacity to indicate the organization of experience or
message.
B. Nuance Of Meaning
The power of language is also tremendeously found in the nuance or subtlety of
meaning. The nuance of meaning is built up and derived from a dynamic interaction
of language and the society as its social contexts. In other words, the richness and
depth of meaning as reflected in the nuance of meaning is created in the interaction of
english language and its social contexs.
5. Languages evolves to fulfill or satisfy the requirements of human needs and
aspirations. This implies that language is structured in response to developments of
human beings as members of the society. In other words as language evolves
simultaneously with social changes, as a consequence values, attitudes, beliefs,
traditions, viewpoints, wisdoms, and other subtleties of meaning are stored up in
language. This iplies that social heritages are conserved in language.1
ENGLISH EDUCATION AS A MEANS OF INDUCING CREATIVITY AND
INNOVATION
The english language education or learning covers three areas :
1. Learning about English
Learning about english is refers to learning the rules of mechanism of english
language grammar.
2. Learning English
Learning english means learning to understand and express meaning in english.
3. Learning Through English
Learning through english involves learning reality presented in english text.
ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE IN INDONESIA
Intrinsically Eglish potentially enhances the cognitive aspects as it induces creativity in
thingking. Extrinsically by competence or proficiency in english one can access occupational
and educational spheres as specified in the following :
1. It is a fact that almost all profesional fields internationally require the use of english.
2. Education is also a commodity. The field of education creates job oppurtunities.
3. Business and trade are effectively done in English.
4. Politics and diplomacy require effective use of english.
CONCLUSION :
Language has power in its function and nuance of meaning. The power of language can be
exploited to develop human resources and human empowerment. Specially the power of
6. language can induce creativity and innovation through english language learning activities
covering usage, use and reality. In the future cintext of Indonesia where the information era
that we are in at the moment will end and be replaced by the Age of Creation or Innovation it
Is expected that english will be used to develop human creativity to cope with highly and
densenly competitive life.
