2. WHAT IS BBFC?
BBFC stands for British Board of film classification. The organisation aim to provide age ratings
and censorship for films in the UK. There are five main age rating certificates which are, U
(unrated), PG (Parental Guidance), 12/12A, 15+ and finally 18+. The purpose of the certification is
to protect underage children from inappropriate and potential harmful content in films and takes
into account what the general public find acceptable for viewing in each age category.
3. AGE CERTIFICATION FOR MY PRODUCTION
My production is aimed at those aged 12+, in particular people between the age of 12 – 25 both male and
female. This is due to the fact that the story may be somewhat violent for younger viewers but is very
unlikely to be as all scenes are fiction and the only main form of violence is a slap . Young people are
somewhat susceptible to learning how to deal with their problems through the media and through
violence and anger therefore it is preferred to be kept to a minimum. Furthermore, I think, this target
audience may be more able to understand the concept behind the film and may generally be more
interested in what is going on.
The documentary itself doesn’t contain any inappropriate scenes or acts of drugs or violence, however, it is
purely on the basis of the emotion and realism of the story that may just be too much for younger viewers
to understand. As it is realistic it may give them a bad image about relationships and their futures.
4. Furthermore, when choosing my age certification, I have taken into account the results from my pre –
questionnaire and realised what kinds of audiences would be interested in the product and would also be
suited best for it. It is for that reason that ‘Unfaithful’ will be classified as 12/12A.
