2. WHAT IS BBFC?
BBFC stands for British Board of film classification. The organisation aim to provide age ratings
and censorship for films in the UK. There are five main age rating certificates which are, U
(unrated), PG (Parental Guidance), 12/12A, 15+ and finally 18+. The purpose of the certification is
to protect underage children from inappropriate and potential harmful content in films and takes
into account what the general public find acceptable for viewing in each age category.
3. AGE CERTIFICATION FOR MY PRODUCTION
My production is aimed at those aged 15+, in particular people between the age of 16 – 60 both male and
female. This is due to the fact that the story behind the documentary may be somewhat distressing to
younger viewers. The idea of the plane crash and her survival story can be rather emotional along with her
time after everything had happened. Furthermore, I think, this target audience may be more able to
understand the concept behind the documentary and may generally be more interested in what is going
on.
The documentary itself doesn’t contain any inappropriate scenes or acts of drugs or violence, however, it is
purely on the basis of the emotion and realism of the story that may just be too much for younger viewers
to understand. As it is a true story it may also scare them or give them a bad image about planes or
accidents which due to their age may influence their lives in the future.
4. Furthermore, when choosing my age certification, I have taken into account the results from my pre –
questionnaire and realised what kinds of audiences would be interested in the product and would also be
suited best for it. It is for that reason that Survivors will be classified as 15.
