This document discusses different types of symbiotic relationships between organisms: mutualism, in which both species benefit; commensalism, where one benefits and the other is not affected; and parasitism, predation, and competition, where one is harmed. Examples of each type of symbiosis are provided, such as lichens demonstrating mutualism and rickettsia causing disease in an example of parasitism. Symbiosis refers to living together, with organisms interacting in ecosystems to acquire necessities like food, shelter, and transportation.
3. z
Why do interdependence of living organism ?
Organisms living together in an ecosystem depend
upon one another in order to survive.
They interact in a number of ways to enable them to
acquire food,shelter, protection, support and
transportation.
4. z
The microorganism can associate physically with other
organisms in a variety of ways
Ectosymbiont
Endosymbiont
5. z Types of symbiosis
Mutualism
Commensalism
Parasitism
Predation
Competition
6. z MUTUALISM (+,+)
Benefit on both partners,
they become mutually
dependent upon each other.
Example:-
Lichen – association with
Algae and Fungi.
7. z COMMENSALISM (+,0)
In Latin com; together and Mensa;
table means eat at the same table.
In this relationship one organism is
benefited but the other one is
niether benefited nor harmed.
Example:- Nitrification (Nitrobacter
benefits from its association with
Nitrosomonas).
8. z
PREDATION (+,-)
Microbes involves a predator
species that attacks and
usually kill it's prey.
Example:- Bdellovibrio and
Daptobacter
Daptobacter penetrates the
prey cell and consumes the
cytoplasmic contents directly.
9. z
PARASITISM
This is a relationship
between two organisms
in which one benefits
from the other, and the
host is usually harmed.
Example:- The disease
typhus ( Rickettsia typhi
caused Rickettsia)
10. z
COMPETITION (-,-)
It occurs when both organisms
having the same needs live in
the same area.
Both may be harmed
Example :- Cheetahs and lions
11. z
• “+” :- This sign denotes profit.
“-” :- This sign denotes loss.
“0” :-This sign denotes no loss & no profit.
