Muslims In Media
Portrayal of Muslims in the Media
Ambarta Noor
San Diego State University
Portrayal of Muslims in the Media Negative portrayals of Muslims in the mainstream media have
led to widespread islamophobia in society. The way the media have illustrated Islam and Muslims in
the media has influenced citizens to be misinformed about the true nature of both Muslims and
Islam. As a result of the negative representations of Muslims in the media, societies views of
Muslims have been adversely rendered and caused an unnecessary fear of Muslims in society.
Exacerbation of islamophobia in the media has also led to a number of hate crimes towards Muslims
(McQueeney, 2014). Instead of focusing on real news, medias often narrate stories

Pluralism In The Muslim Community
Pluralism by definition is a state of society that promotes inclusion and tolerance that allows a group
to maintain and develop their traditional culture. For the Muslim community, this is tied to their
cultural identity and sense of belonging here in the United States. The journal article states that "It
encourages skepticism and innovation and is thus subversive of the status quo" (Moore 118). In
other words, pluralism works to fight against a secular world and opens the door to change.
However, it is difficult to proclaim that such an ideology exists on American soil given the events
that occurred to the Muslim community post 9–11.
Government Policies and the war on terror inadvertently isolated the entire community of Muslims

It's easy to politically marginalize a group of people who make up a small fraction of the total U.S
population. Being underrepresented and feeling like they do not have a voice in the government puts
a halt on any form of change and make it even more difficult to establish a sense of belonging. The
U.S in term of an industrialized powerhouse is a the top which contributes to its political power,
however, the inclusion of Muslim Americans is almost nonexistent. For many Muslim Americans, it
is difficult to continue publicly supporting and celebrating their culture, religion, and heritage out of
fear of the backlash.
People fear that in which is different from the norm but, America is founding upon the idea of
freedom and diversity. Inclusion and tolerance should not be something that has to be required rather
a principle ingrained in each individual from the very beginning. This journal article aimed to
discuss the meaning of pluralism in the U.S and in doing so highlights the fact that given the current
trajectory and the Muslim experience in the United States, it now more vital than ever to take a step
back and examine the impact of how minorities are treated and the steps necessary for social and

9/11 On Muslims
America's viewpoint on the Muslim group of people was significantly prejudiced by post 9/11. The
entire Muslim community was vision negatively as of the events that was taken by Al Qaeda an
international terrorist group formed by Osama Bin Laden. Soon, subsequent to the bombing of the
twin towers, primary awareness of Muslims habitually originated from labels relating to the Middle
East as a whole. According to "Affective Politics after 9/11" Todd Hall proposed that 9/11 was a
sensitively prominent event that created an emotional shock wave. He believed the original place of
influence were the countless effective reaction of people in the United States who has watched the
series of terrorist attacks unfold and causes Americans to view Muslims

African American Muslim
For the American Muslim
Several years back, W.E.B. Du Bois coined a term "double consciousness." He used to term to
describe the phenomenon of how African–Americans lived their lives with two different "scripts" or
how to behave. The first script, was the one that applied to anyone regardless of race or identity. The
second was unique to blacks, who often felt obliged to view themselves through the lens of the
dominant white group. Du Bois's ideology was absolutely correct. Not just for the African American
but also for most other minority groups as well. Nowadays, I feel like I go through the same
phenomenon myself as an American Muslim.
Although today's American Muslim, unless he or she is racially black, doesn't face double–
consciousness through the lens of Du Bois for the African American, we do face the same form of
confusion and struggle to be less of ourselves and more of what needs to be seen. Even when what
most of us are in reality isn't harmful. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There has been an overall increase in the tendency of fellow Americans to look at muslims through
the distorted glasses of Islamophobia––a term used to define the dislike of or prejudice against Islam
or Muslims.
Moreover, the status quo for Muslims in America, literally questions American Muslim's loyalty to
the country. It is utterly upsetting to see how so many American Muslims are viewed as simply
Muslims. In an interview a few days earlier Noor Tagouri, a Muslim T.V. Anchor and Journalist was
basically asked about her own loyalty to the country because of her identity as a Muslim. In fact, a
member of the interview was so ready to go against the base of America and fought against giving

People became fearful and they still are. They walk in fears, people can't get in the same plane with

teenagers began to hid themselves from the real world to avoid discrimination and violence.
American see Muslims as allies in a fight for freedom and peace than American citizens. According
to research, 50% Muslim American mom let the children break their religious beliefs to keep them

Prejudice And Discrimination Against Muslims
Have you ever thought about how many Muslims are discriminated on a day to day basis? On
account of discrimination, it's a prejudiced or prejudicial outlook, action or treatment and this is
based on the Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. Discrimination against Muslims majorly
happens in the MDC's and core countries in the Northern hemisphere. Those Countries are
predominantly a Christian based nations and so they consider Muslims violent based on past
experience and start discriminating all Muslims even though only few are violent.

According to a website "gallup.com" Islamophobia is described to be an exaggerated fear, hatred
and hostility towards Islam and Muslims that is perpetuated by negative stereotypes resulting in
bias, discrimination and the marginalization and exclusion of Muslims from social, political and
civic life. According to "Progressive.org", a new study shows that bias against Muslim Americans is
having an impact on their job prospects, especially in red states. In those red states, only 2 percent of
applications by the Muslim candidate received interviewed invitations compared to 17 percent for
the Christian candidate, the study finds. A friend of mine who is a Muslim told me that after 9/11,
her father lost his job, and was arrested for questioning because he was Muslim and an Arab. This
directly goes against the standards America was built upon. A result from progressive.org also found

Muslims In The Military Essay
After reading the many articles provided on Muslims serving in the military it is disheartening to
know how this population has been treated for serving for our country. Like many other individuals
Muslims are drawn to the military for the same reasons as other recruits, such as a strong sense of
patriotism, a search for discipline and dreams of attending college (Preston, 2014). According to the
U.S Department of Defense more than 3,500 Muslims fought in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is also
noted that Muslims have played an important role in the American armed forces because of their
linguistic skills and cultural understanding of Muslims living around the world (Consindine, 2015).
One of the major challenges that are cited in both the articles ... Show more content on

Due to the 911 Terrorist attacks the Islamic faith has been under tremendous scrutiny and has
created a negative connotation with terrorism against the U.S. Another challenge many Muslim
soldiers face stems from the challenges of dual identities as believers of the Islamic faith and as
members of the U.S. military. Some soldiers use fake last names to avoid being singled out by
insurgents as traitors and to prevent retaliations against their families (Dreazen, 2009). Some other
challenges Muslims serving in the military face are discrimination among their peers. Multiple of
the articles discussed how many soldiers are subjects of taunts, making them feel singled out by
fellow soldiers. After reviewing the article and reading I feel like there needs to be a delicate balance
of making Muslim military members feel less marginalized without their being a risk for
radicalization. I think currently the military is doing a great job balancing this by allowing
"religious–minority service members to display their beliefs outwardly – such as wearing a turban,
scarf or beard – as long as the practices do not interfere with military discipline, order or readiness"

Muslims Social Justice
Social justice is the right and freedom that everyone has about their chosen religion. Mahatma
Gandhi says "I have no right to more than I need when my brother has less than he needs."
Therefore, this quote suggests that social justice is enjoyable if all of us have it. It's hurting for me to
have freedom towards everything while my brother next door is deprived his freedom especially that
of religion. The US Congress even passed the establishment clause which prohibited the law from
interfering with the establishment and practices of any religion. The establishment clause promotes
social justice, but many people and the legislature have broken this law. Why are the Muslims linked
to many terrorist activities? Why is terrorism involving Muslims more aired in the media than those
attacks involving non–Muslims? These are the questions that need answers because stereotyping a
religion is social justice.
Recently, the US president banned immigration from seven major Muslim countries including Iraq,

After the signing of the executive order, Muslims from Malaysia were demonstrating requesting for
justice for their fellow men. The business sector will be disadvantaged since they will have to seek

rift between Muslims and non–Muslims may increase because the executive order portrays Muslims
as terrorist making them feel rejected by the US. The rift between the Muslims and the non–
Muslims will even trigger more terrorist attacks (Mckissen, 2017).. Who said terrorism is the
leading cause of deaths in the US? Most of the residents of the US die as a result of accidents and
diseases and not terrorism hence banning innocent people from the US is a social injustice.

Discriminating against the people that believe in the Muslim religion is a rising issue that has broke
out to many across the nation. President Trump has even signed a executive order to ban the number
of Muslims that enter the country each year as Trump cut the amount of refugees that enter the
country in half (Zapotosky, Nakamura, and Hauslohner). In addition, this will help with acts of
terror within the country, but looking from the outside it appears as racist. Although, not all Muslims
are terrorist, to reduce the amount of attacks is through the ban of Muslims. Also, by doing this it
will create about 50,000 more jobs for the Americans. This could help more than just the belief of

Muslims Cope With Islamophobia
In recent years, islamophobia has become a serious problem plaguing our society due to the stigma
placed onto the muslim religion and Middle–Eastern people by outlets such as social media,
politicians, and personal opinions. With the increase of negative attitudes towards these people due
to currents events, more awareness needs to be raised to make them feel safer and to remove this
unjustifiably placed stigma from their shoulders.
In Slate's video, "How American Muslims Cope with Islamophobia", Ismail created a video
presentation to present this topic to their desired audience with the use of muslim people discussing
their experiences of being a muslim in the U.S by answering certain questions aimed towards them.

Hate Crimes: Discrimination On Muslims
Being a Muslim in an American country is a struggle and ever since, 9/11 effects took a turn for
Muslims. Ever since Trump was elected president, the discrimination against Muslims has grown
stronger. People need to be educated about Muslim culture and eliminate the perception that every
Muslim is a "terrorist". The community I am looking towards on the University of Kentucky campus
is the MSA. The MSA is the Muslim student association and their goal is to promote Islam and
teach us all about how peaceful is their religion. After looking in depth the bigger question I will be
looking at is what is life like for Muslims post 9/11 (Macroaggression)?
Throughout my life I have been witnessing hate crimes, but it may not have been in person but
utmost certainly in the news. The news channel portrays us Muslims way wrong. In the news when
Muslims do something wrong they are automatically named terrorist while when someone American
does something they are called mentally ill. While investigating this broader topic, this made me
think even deeper. What was the cause of this? Why are do certain people act like this? Why do
people show us hatred? Many of these questions are being popped into my head, ever since I have
been researching my topic. What surprises me the most that most people think all Muslims are ...

Muslim Discrimination In America
I think that Muslim discrimination in America got worse, but some things have to get worse to get
better. Historically and presently, when Muslims travel to the United States or live in the US they
face discrimination because of a small number of Islamic extremists take their religion too far.
Historically there have been attacks on America that caused the discrimination. Currently in the US
there have been some attacks by extremists and radical terrorists. The "islamic terrorists" are trying
to "protect their religion" from the United States of America. In the future, I think there will still be
discrimination against Muslim people. Further in the future there could be a time when there is very
minimal discrimination against Muslims.

Muslim American Stereotypes
Stereotypes of Muslims in America
In the recent years there has been an increase in the number of terrorist attacks and groups such as
9–11, Paris, and Isis . As these attacks get more and more frequent and so does the amount of media
that covers them. When the media reports about these events they can spread untrue, misleading or
misunderstood information. This kind of spread can get cause stereotypes among the American
people.
Even before 9/11, the effects of stereotyping against Muslims has been present. For example in a
Harvard University article about Muslim Americans struggling with stereotypes it states,"in the
immediate wake of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, early news accounts included reports of
people of "Middle Eastern heritage" fleeing the scene; many journalists, "experts," and even former
Representative Dave McCurdy linked the bombing to "fundamentalist Islamic terrorist groups." In
media such as newspapers they have printed in a way that could be misleading to the reader,
"newspaper headlines regularly print the words "Islam" and "Muslim" next to words like "fanatic,"

Stereotypes Against Muslims
These are some examples where some leaders have made discriminatory statements against Muslims
and it doesn't aim at Muslims only of certain region but, it points to Muslims all over the world.
Leaders are chosen by the people to represent the people, but not to create hatred and fear amongst
the people for political or any other reasons. Such statements made by great leaders have a great
impact on the beliefs of people, as we believe in our leaders and therefore even theirs words are
taken into consideration sometimes without a rational thinking. This doesn't affect just the mindset
of people but it terribly shapes the attitudes, behaviours, philosophy and even their idea of a

Muslim Women Essay
In today's society women are given ample opportunity just as much as men. In some countries, such
as middle–eastern nations that is not the case. Muslim women are often perceived to be submissive
to Muslim men and unequal. Mohammed never taught for women to be treated as lower class
citizens. Nonetheless, the blame is pointed towards the religion of Islam. The Islamic religion began
as all monotheist religions representing a belief in one God and moral standards. In the following
essay I will discuss and elaborate what Mohammed taught, how women lived in early Islamic
society, and what it has become. Mohammed (ca. 570–632) was the founder of Islam which means

Either way you interpret Mohammad's theory made it was clear he believed women played an
important role in mothering the believers and advertising Islam. In early Islamic society the laws
were followed and obeyed when it came to respecting women. In many cases it was found that
women earned property and had an influence on the husband's decision. Veils or hijab as the
Muslim's call it, would be worn proudly by women before and today as a way of reducing lust and
preventing temptation. Women were permitted to be warriors, politics, and lead religious sanctions.
They also traveled freely and played active roles in trade and economic roles. Unfortunately, the era
of men and women being equal was hasty. Briefly after Mohammed's death Islamic society changed,
so did the interpretations of the Quran to meet different circumstances. Almost simultaneously
women became inferior almost being viewed as possessions and property. Having choices was no
longer an option for women, whatever the man said became the law. Girls at birth could be killed by
their father's because boys carried the name of the family while girls usually were concubines,
workers, or sold. Most significantly women's roles depended largely on what the husband's
economic status was. If the husband was a farmer the wife had to help in the fields or if the husband
worked in the city she had to help run the business. In conclusion, this

Muslims. They are often described as anti–gay, anti–female, anti–human rights, barbaric,
uncivilized, etc. By describing the Muslim community in such harsh terms the media is allowing
Muslims to become "Others" and monsters. While terrorism is a huge and scary issue facing this
world, we can't fully blame all Muslims for this. However, with the way the media is describing

researching about the Muslim culture would could give you some background knowledge about a
client's culture and possibly information about where a client is coming from (Rheam & Dr. Garzon,

nature where the small communities function as a family to some extent. Therefore, a counselor

Essay On Muslims In America
Most would argue that American's negative conceptions of Muslims and the cultures which originate
from the Middle East have dramatically risen since 9/11. Research shows that, although this may be
true, negative attitudes towards Muslim–Americans have existed throughout the decades, and have
only just become more prevalent since the September 11th attacks. In October of 2001, ABC did a
poll to come up with the results of what percentage of America has favorable views of Muslim
Americans. This poll found that in 2001 there was a 47 percent favorable view of Muslims. In 2010
the percentage dropped to 37 percent. Today that percent is even lower, at just 27 percent.

Muslim Stereotypes Essay
Stereotypes often determine how we see people who are different from us. Stereotypes play such an
important role in our perceptions of others, but what exactly are they? A stereotype is a widely held
but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing (Williams, 2013).
In essence, stereotypes are not limited to different races and ethnicities, but also include: genders,
social classes, cultures and even certain hobbies. In light of the increase of negative attention that
Muslims have been receiving in the media, the stereotypes discussed in this paper will be centered
on Muslims. Specifically, the stereotype that all Muslims are terrorists will be analyzed. Since Islam
is a religion that promotes peace and kindness, one could ask where the stereotype that all Muslims
are terrorists originated. Following the tragedies of September 11, 2001, Arabs and Muslims have
been presented as potential terrorists. This idea stemmed from the theory that, "media bias increases
when a specific ethnic, religious, or racial group is seen as a threat to national security." (Stiffler,
2013). Since the attacks on September 11, 2001 Muslims and Arabs have been "hyper–visible" in
the media as potential terrorists. Due to the negative media attention and failure of most media

I do think that it is human nature for us to be discriminating them the way we do. I feel as humans
we are judgmental. We don't wait until we meet someone to judge them. The first thing we see is
appearance and that it is where our initial judgement is made. Muslims dress much like the people in
terrorist groups, like ISIS, dress. I also feel like ignorance is another contribution to the
discrimination of Muslims. We as Americans are not well educated on the Muslim religion. We hear

intelligence on Muslim faith and the human nature of judging by appearance, Muslims are very
prone to be discriminated as terrorist. It is the same thing as all black people are athletic. I do not
think it is fair to people of Muslim faith to be discriminated as terrorist. They are just as nice and

faiths. In result, he proposes the U.S should ban all Muslims from entering the country. Over two
million Muslim families live in the United States currently. Many have been here for years, and
came to seek a better life. Unfortunately, Muslims are getting a bad reputation because of ongoing
terrorism. Furthermore, the U. S. should not take these steps towards disallowing Muslims to enter
the states. Not only would it create a hostile relationship with other Islamic countries, but it would
be considered discrimination against the faith and go against basic human principles.
If we isolate the Muslim population, the U. S will most likely cease intercontinental relations with
foreign Islamic nations. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When muslims enter the country they deserve the same right that is given to other immigrants ;
freedom of religion. Banning muslims from entering the country because of their religious beliefs is
as preposterous as not allowing a new person into a church. The United States is a boiling pot of
ethnicities, nationalities and religions. The U.S should not ban muslims from migrating into the
country, because it will create tension among Islamic countries, separate families and be a threat
against religious freedom. People often fear things they do not understand, it seems that many
Americans are associating muslims with the ideals of terrorist groups simply because they are
unfamiliar to their religion. If the government does not look past their fear of allowing muslims into
the country, it will be alone in their struggle against real

Racial Stereotypes Of Muslims
Stereotypes is a fixed, over generalized belief about a particular group or class of people (Cardwell,
1966). Stereotypes are used to making interactions with new people easier. However, it also means
people forget differences of individuals and assumes based on generalization. Stereotypes eventually
leads to social categorization which creates prejudice towards groups. Racial stereotypes such as
described in "Look, Mohammed the Terrorist is Coming!" by Nadine Naber, they describe the
stereotypical "Mohammed", an Arab or Middle Eastern Muslim man with a beard and brown or dark
complexion that usually fits the profile of a terrorist. It's not only Muslims who becomes victims of
this stereotype, majority of Middle Easterners, including Christians, Muslims, and even atheists, and
majority South Asians, including Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs. Another stereotype of Muslims that
media has constructed is around hijabis. Often if a Muslim woman is wearing a hijab, oppression,
conservative, traditionalism is associated with them. Rarely is it asked, "was it your choice". Every
woman wearing a hijab may not have to option to chose to wear it or not, but often, it is the women's
individual decisions to decide to wear a hijab or not. Some will wear it when they feel they are
ready, some will wear it to be closer to God, and some will wear it as a step towards being religious.
No matter what the reason, it doesn't mean oppression, or being narrow–minded. In every major
religion, there is a

Religion has become one of the biggest diverse topics in today's society. Throughout the last weeks
we have taken the journey to learn about different religions and in this paper I will attempt to take
you on that journey with me learning about the Muslim religion. The Muslim religion dates all the
way back to 570 BC when the prophet Muhammad was said to be born. Muhammad is considered
by Muslims to be the last continuing chain of prophets who has come to restore what they consider
real religion. (Fisher, 2005, Para. 1). The Muslims scared book is called the Qur'an, which according

Upon arrival to the Mosques it looks like it was covered in snow because it was all white with just a
little of silver trimming on the edges. It is nothing spectacular there are no bright windows or a big
cross to signify what it is like most churches I have seen. The inside was just as simple, out of
respect there are no shoes worn in the Mosque praying areas and there were also separate room for
prayer based on gender. There was also a common area with books for learning. Although it was
simple the Mosques was very pretty and it was very refreshing to see a place where all that seems to
matter was praise and worship and not who has the best what. After having a tour of the Mosque I
sat down with a young Muslim by the name of Asja Jackson, she is twenty–four year old and had
converted from being a Baptist and here is a summary of the interview.
Me: Good Afternoon, How are you?
Asja: Good how are you?
Me: I am doing just fine, first before we begin let me first thank you for taking the time out of your
day to talk to me and answer my questions.
Asja: You are welcome.
Me: Ok, the first question I'd like to ask is; how long have you been a practicing Muslim?
Asja: I have been an active practicing Muslim for 9 years.
Me: That is a long time, what made choose to practice Islam over other religions? You were a
Baptist at one point correct?
Asja: Yes I was. However when I was practicing Christianity while growing up I wasn't able

Veiling For Muslim Women
Vast numbers of Muslim women around the world, range by wearing a simple head scarf to full–
body burqa. The book aims to explain this very visible, yet controversial and least understood Islam
emblem. Sahar Amer highlights the multiple meanings of veiling, showing that the practice cannot
be homogenized or oversimplified and it extends well beyond the religious and political accounts
that are overwhelming proclaimed both inside and outside Muslim majority societies. Despite
popular belief, Islam did not invent veiling nor is the practice specific to Muslims (Amer, 1). Veiling
has been practiced by Christian, Jewish and Muslim women for the past two millennia, but
somehow it is associated primarily with Muslims (Amer, 1). It is interesting ... Show more content

In Merriam–Webster English dictionary, it states nearly the same definition, but goes on to mention
the nun's headdress and the bride's ornamental head cover as examples of veiling (Amer, 10). So
why do we, as Euro–Americans typically associate veiling with Islamic practice? In reference to
Islam, the veil takes on a specific connotation in our popular imagery. Typically, we do not associate
the sheer bridal veil with Islam, rather it is fused with images of a black cloak, a chador, covering a
Muslim woman from head to toe in Iran (Amer, 10). Unfortunately, the media plays another role in
this as this is how many movies, television programs, and newspapers have portrayed these women.
Growing up in a country that has only shown images of women in dark, dense coverings, I did not
realize that women did not necessarily dress this way. The book explains the many different types of
Muslim dress and veils, ranging from covering everything except for the eyes to only cover the hair
and neck. The differences in dress made it clear that not all Muslim women dress the same way,
despite what media had taught

Muslims are not Terrorists
"There should be a total and complete shutdown of muslims entering the United States."~Donald
Trump.
All Muslims are terrorists, all muslims are responsible for 9/11, all muslims are vicious. False, false,
and false. Muslims are being attacked and accused with allegations that they are responsible for all
extremist attacks throughout the world. The real truth being that this is not the actions of what Islam
leads Muslims to act upon. How many people in American society really know the truth about
Islam? The holy book of Islam, the Quran chapter 5 verse 32 says, " If anyone killed a person, it

Almost in every religion worldwide there are those who choose to disobey the true meaning of a
religion and mis–use it for their own interpretation. People begin to confuse what the religion is
really teaching and certain people or groups manipulate it for their own ideas. These extremists, that
carry out these mass murders of innocent people are not Muslims whatsoever but conduct these
attacks in the name of their own interpretation of "Islam." One way to understand this, is that the
majority of the people who are killed are Muslims, and so those true Muslims are suffering just as
much as anyone else in this world who wants to end terrorism. This is what needs to be understood,
the line between the true definition of a religion and the fabricated one made by individuals and
groups, as well as the role our media is playing in regards to this important distinction.
Like most of us know, there are a lot of ignorant people out there who build their beliefs based on
anger, fear, and what others tell them. People commonly collect and build their image of Muslim
people from corrupted sources, one being what media outlets portray as Muslims. Another being
what people tell each other on social media. The most powerful tool is the internet and how often do
we check if the sources on the internet are even true? This is exactly what causes people to continue

a group of people who affiliate with them does not represent who they are as a whole.
However, not all Americans are willing to see beyond the Muslim terrorist frame. In the distance
behind the Muslim–Americans are two people expressing their indifference to the situation around

The Issue Of Muslim Women
One of the biggest anomalies among current events today is the topic of Muslim women. Islamic
women have been in the shadows for years, hidden by their spouses, therefore resulting in the reason
why so many of them have been the subject of abuse. The devastating incident that led to many
deaths on September 11th of 2001, could possibly be the most recent event that has sparked interest
with the Muslim population (Daba–Buzoianu et.al 148). Even then, however, Americans were more
concerned for their own safety rather than the safety of Muslim women. In the past, these women
have had a history of abuse as a result of their disobedience and unfaithfulness to their religion. For
example, in Pakistan, "...men, soldiers, and civilians have used rape as a strategy of terrorism
against Pakistan's women, particularly those who dare to transgress existing social hierarchies or
who belong to stigmatized social groups (Sharlach 95)." Two of the most recent victims of
authoritative Muslims that have managed to get their stories heard have been Mukhtaran Mai and
Malala Yousafzai. Mai was raped as a result of her brother's crimes and Yousafzai was shot by the
Taliban as a result of merely wanting an education (Afzal–Khan 153). Although it seems that free
will is an option for these women, few are brave enough to let their own opinions on issues
concerning their lives surpass the demands of their religious leaders, who can possibly even be
considered their masters. Women of this culture are

Anti-Muslim Stereotypes
Currently, the anti–Muslim and anti–immigration political party is gaining more and more support
all over the world, making it the third largest political group worldwide under the pre–text that "It
isn't Islamophobia when they ARE trying to kill you (barenakedislam)." While activists spread
misleading information about Muslims to help protect their nation and culture, the public needs to
stop accepting most media about Muslims as truth because it causes prejudice towards immigrants
of middle–Eastern origin, it creates a fear of terror in our society, and it contributes to violence
based on misinformation.

"Most anti–immigration movements and hate crimes are motivated based on misleading information
(Hitti)". As the media produce more and more reports about violence pertaining to Islam; out of fear,
anti–Islamic movements begin to form. These groups, then produce even more reports about
Muslims and Islamic culture, thus creating fear based prejudice solely based on misinformation.
This motivated hate crimes such as the destruction of mosques, and harassment of Muslims on the
street. One example of this is the verbal attack in Rochester. Brittan First's deputy leader Jayda
Fransen, also a candidate in the by–election, videotaped herself yelling at Muslims leaving a
mosque. "Fransen was recorded saying, Rochester is an English town.... Get out of my town....

Muslim Immigrants And Secularism In France
Since its inception, the followers of Islam have grown exponentially, spreading the religion's ideals
across the world. Today, Islam is one of the most significant religions in the world by attracting
millions of followers who continue to adhere to the ancient practices outlined in the Qur'an.
Unfortunately, these practices are often looked down upon by non–Muslim people and considered to
be symbolic of terrorism or of the fundamentalist side of the religion. This instance can be observed
largely in France as a result of secularism that has been deeply rooted in the country for generations.
The most controversial practice of Islam today is Islamic dress. Women who wear head coverings
like hijabs, burqas, and niqabs as a way to bring them closer to god are viewed as unwilling to
integrate into Western society even though the women may be French citizens. ... Show more

Western feminists have taken the issue into their own hands by attempting to outlaw Muslim
headscarves, even though a majority of Muslim women have chosen to wear a veil themselves.
Since secularism has been such a significant influence on French policies and government for
hundreds of years, many French citizens have a negative opinion of Muslim immigrants, believing
that Muslim immigrants are a danger to French secularism. Although the Muslim population has
expanded and rooted itself into French society, many native French citizens believe that Muslim
immigrants cannot truly be considered French. This opinion is false, however, seeing as thousands
of Muslim immigrants still identify as French citizens while observing Islamic traditions. Despite
the numerous attempts to eliminate the tradition of wearing hijabs, burqas, and niqabs, Muslim
women can still identify as culturally French without risking the secularity of

The Muslim Veil
The Muslim Veil The veil worn by many Muslim women tends to be a stereotyped piece of clothing.
Many of us in the United States see it and automatically assume that the person is a terrorist, but
what do we really know about the Muslim veil? Caryle Murphy, a writer for The Christian Science
Monitor, thinks that we do not fully understand the complexity of the Muslim veil. In "Behind the
Veil: Why Islam's Most Visible Symbol Is Spreading," Murphy writes that "Rarely in human history
has a piece of cloth been assigned so many roles. Been embroiled in so much controversy. Been so
misjudged, misunderstood, and manipulated" (1). We in the United States need to understand that
the veil is a piece of cloth that has different meanings to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the real concern Murphy points out is cultural. She writes that "in Western culture [...]
masks usually denote deceit or something to hide" and that the veil can prevent Muslim women
from assimilating into a Western community where "high stock is placed on face–to–face
communication" (4). British Minister Jack Straw brought up this concern when he called the veil a
"'visible statement of separation and difference'" (4). France banned the wearing of the head scarf by
state school children in 2004, though it decided against banning the burqa throughout the country.
Some Middle Eastern countries like Turkey, and even Iran at one time, banned veils in public to try
to become more like the West. However, despite Western influence and patriarchal pressure, more
and more Muslim women are wearing veils not to accommodate others but out of their strong
religious belief that it gets them closer to Allah (4). Murphy concludes by noting that women have
fun with the veil when they choose to wear it, making it into a fashionable item. Far from being
repressed, these women can "'cover and be beautiful'" (5).
After reading the article I better understand the complexities of the Muslim veil. I had no idea, for
example, that fashion magazines were devoted to the veil. I can see how it would be difficult for
someone in working class America to understand what Muslim women go through. I hear the
stereotype regularly at work: "Why

now. In our country, today it's pretty apparent there is a type of fear of Muslims, so much so that 7

in a lifetime, Jack has not made his pilgrimage yet but looks forward to it. I delved into further detail
about the daily prayers with Jack, asking him the length of each prayer. Jack says on average each
daily prayer last between 5–10 minutes, depending on the prescribed length of the prayer and
number of verses. Each of the five prayers has a window of time to be completed in, ranging from
one hour to four hour long windows according to Jack. I asked Jack as well about holidays we

Muslim Female Stereotypes

zone because of zoning laws and how the city won't allow the buildings to be built or where they are

that they are all immigrants so the majority of this community is made up of immigrants. They are

Muslim Culture
Exactly what is considered as a Muslim? A Muslim is defined as a believer in Islam, however a
Black Muslim is considered as a member of the nation of Islam. A follower of the religion of Islam,
as Muslims, means one who submits to god. Muslims came in the seventeenth century with slaves
from Africa. The history of Muslim Americans goes back more than 400 years. America is called
home for the Muslims, they present as taxi drivers, homemakers, and also entertainers. Muslim
Americans make up at least one percent of the U.S. population ("Teaching Tolerance").
Muslims are considered to have unique beliefs and traditions of their culture. For instance, one of
their beliefs is that hard work pays off. Seventy–one percent agree that most people who want to get
ahead in the U.S. can make it if they're willing to work. ("Muslim Americans: Middle Class and
Mostly Mainstream"). Muslims were the first to establish awareness of astronomy. Their outlook
and values are extremely religious and very educated. They are worried about their life and how
they're living. Muslims are obligated to pray five times a day such as pre–dawn, midday, afternoon,
sunset, and night. They believe that there is only one god, the religion of Abraham. I learned that
Muslims who don't pray five times a day are considered as living an ungodly life. However, I
believe the opposite which is that a person does not have to pray at a specific time every day, but
rather when a person feels the need to pray. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From my research, I discovered that this organization is known for saying that they are not

resilience to disasters. Lipton states an article written by Ryan Mauro states that the Department of
Homeland Security says MOA is linked to Jamaat Ul–Fuqra, a Pakistan militant group led by Gilani.
In 1998, the State Department said Ul–Fuqra is an "Islamic sect that seeks to purify Islam through
violence." (Muslims of the America MOA.) I find this information to be disturbing because in my
readings I found out that MOA says Osama Bin Ladin is a Saudi activist. An activist is someone that

Portrayal of Muslims in Media: Negative Coverage

  • 1. Muslims In Media Portrayal of Muslims in the Media Ambarta Noor San Diego State University Portrayal of Muslims in the Media Negative portrayals of Muslims in the mainstream media have led to widespread islamophobia in society. The way the media have illustrated Islam and Muslims in the media has influenced citizens to be misinformed about the true nature of both Muslims and Islam. As a result of the negative representations of Muslims in the media, societies views of Muslims have been adversely rendered and caused an unnecessary fear of Muslims in society. Exacerbation of islamophobia in the media has also led to a number of hate crimes towards Muslims (McQueeney, 2014). Instead of focusing on real news, medias often narrate stories ... • 5. Pluralism In The Muslim Community Pluralism by definition is a state of society that promotes inclusion and tolerance that allows a group to maintain and develop their traditional culture. For the Muslim community, this is tied to their cultural identity and sense of belonging here in the United States. The journal article states that "It encourages skepticism and innovation and is thus subversive of the status quo" (Moore 118). In other words, pluralism works to fight against a secular world and opens the door to change. However, it is difficult to proclaim that such an ideology exists on American soil given the events that occurred to the Muslim community post 9–11. Government Policies and the war on terror inadvertently isolated the entire community of Muslims here in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It's easy to politically marginalize a group of people who make up a small fraction of the total U.S population. Being underrepresented and feeling like they do not have a voice in the government puts a halt on any form of change and make it even more difficult to establish a sense of belonging. The U.S in term of an industrialized powerhouse is a the top which contributes to its political power, however, the inclusion of Muslim Americans is almost nonexistent. For many Muslim Americans, it is difficult to continue publicly supporting and celebrating their culture, religion, and heritage out of fear of the backlash. People fear that in which is different from the norm but, America is founding upon the idea of freedom and diversity. Inclusion and tolerance should not be something that has to be required rather a principle ingrained in each individual from the very beginning. This journal article aimed to discuss the meaning of pluralism in the U.S and in doing so highlights the fact that given the current trajectory and the Muslim experience in the United States, it now more vital than ever to take a step back and examine the impact of how minorities are treated and the steps necessary for social and political ... The entire Muslim community was vision negatively as of the events that was taken by Al Qaeda an international terrorist group formed by Osama Bin Laden. Soon, subsequent to the bombing of the twin towers, primary awareness of Muslims habitually originated from labels relating to the Middle East as a whole. According to "Affective Politics after 9/11" Todd Hall proposed that 9/11 was a sensitively prominent event that created an emotional shock wave. • 13. African American Muslim For the American Muslim Several years back, W.E.B. Du Bois coined a term "double consciousness." He used to term to describe the phenomenon of how African–Americans lived their lives with two different "scripts" or how to behave. The first script, was the one that applied to anyone regardless of race or identity. The second was unique to blacks, who often felt obliged to view themselves through the lens of the dominant white group. Du Bois's ideology was absolutely correct. Not just for the African American but also for most other minority groups as well. Nowadays, I feel like I go through the same phenomenon myself as an American Muslim. Although today's American Muslim, unless he or she is racially black, doesn't face double– consciousness through the lens of Du Bois for the African American, we do face the same form of confusion and struggle to be less of ourselves and more of what needs to be seen. Even when what most of us are in reality isn't harmful. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There has been an overall increase in the tendency of fellow Americans to look at muslims through the distorted glasses of Islamophobia––a term used to define the dislike of or prejudice against Islam or Muslims. Moreover, the status quo for Muslims in America, literally questions American Muslim's loyalty to the country. It is utterly upsetting to see how so many American Muslims are viewed as simply Muslims. In an interview a few days earlier Noor Tagouri, a Muslim T.V. Anchor and Journalist was basically asked about her own loyalty to the country because of her identity as a Muslim. On account of discrimination, it's a prejudiced or prejudicial outlook, action or treatment and this is based on the Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. Discrimination against Muslims majorly happens in the MDC's and core countries in the Northern hemisphere. Those Countries are predominantly a Christian based nations and so they consider Muslims violent based on past experience and start discriminating all Muslims even though only few are violent. According to a website "gallup.com" Islamophobia is described to be an exaggerated fear, hatred and hostility towards Islam and Muslims that is perpetuated by negative stereotypes resulting in bias, discrimination and the marginalization and exclusion of Muslims from social, political and civic life. According to "Progressive.org", a new study shows that bias against Muslim Americans is having an impact on their job prospects, especially in red states. In those red states, only 2 percent of applications by the Muslim candidate received interviewed invitations compared to 17 percent for the Christian candidate, the study finds. A friend of mine who is a Muslim told me that after 9/11, her father lost his job, and was arrested for questioning because he was Muslim and an Arab. This directly goes against the standards America was built upon. • 25. Muslims In The Military Essay After reading the many articles provided on Muslims serving in the military it is disheartening to know how this population has been treated for serving for our country. Like many other individuals Muslims are drawn to the military for the same reasons as other recruits, such as a strong sense of patriotism, a search for discipline and dreams of attending college (Preston, 2014). According to the U.S Department of Defense more than 3,500 Muslims fought in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is also noted that Muslims have played an important role in the American armed forces because of their linguistic skills and cultural understanding of Muslims living around the world (Consindine, 2015). One of the major challenges that are cited in both the articles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to the 911 Terrorist attacks the Islamic faith has been under tremendous scrutiny and has created a negative connotation with terrorism against the U.S. Another challenge many Muslim soldiers face stems from the challenges of dual identities as believers of the Islamic faith and as members of the U.S. military. Some soldiers use fake last names to avoid being singled out by insurgents as traitors and to prevent retaliations against their families (Dreazen, 2009). Some other challenges Muslims serving in the military face are discrimination among their peers. Multiple of the articles discussed how many soldiers are subjects of taunts, making them feel singled out by fellow soldiers. After reviewing the article and reading I feel like there needs to be a delicate balance of making Muslim military members feel less marginalized without their being a risk for radicalization. I think currently the military is doing a great job balancing this by allowing "religious–minority service members to display their beliefs outwardly – such as wearing a turban, scarf or beard – as long as the practices do not interfere with military discipline, order or readiness" (Constable, ... • 29. Muslims Social Justice Social justice is the right and freedom that everyone has about their chosen religion. Mahatma Gandhi says "I have no right to more than I need when my brother has less than he needs." Therefore, this quote suggests that social justice is enjoyable if all of us have it. It's hurting for me to have freedom towards everything while my brother next door is deprived his freedom especially that of religion. The US Congress even passed the establishment clause which prohibited the law from interfering with the establishment and practices of any religion. The establishment clause promotes social justice, but many people and the legislature have broken this law. Why are the Muslims linked to many terrorist activities? Why is terrorism involving Muslims more aired in the media than those attacks involving non–Muslims? These are the questions that need answers because stereotyping a religion is social justice. After the signing of the executive order, Muslims from Malaysia were demonstrating requesting for justice for their fellow men. The business sector will be disadvantaged since they will have to seek investors from the Middle East and not from Malaysia as they did previously (Shelby, 2016). The rift between Muslims and non–Muslims may increase because the executive order portrays Muslims as terrorist making them feel rejected by the US. The rift between the Muslims and the non– Muslims will even trigger more terrorist attacks (Mckissen, 2017).. Who said terrorism is the leading cause of deaths in the US? President Trump has even signed a executive order to ban the number of Muslims that enter the country each year as Trump cut the amount of refugees that enter the country in half (Zapotosky, Nakamura, and Hauslohner). In addition, this will help with acts of terror within the country, but looking from the outside it appears as racist. Muslims Cope With Islamophobia In recent years, islamophobia has become a serious problem plaguing our society due to the stigma placed onto the muslim religion and Middle–Eastern people by outlets such as social media, politicians, and personal opinions. With the increase of negative attitudes towards these people due to currents events, more awareness needs to be raised to make them feel safer and to remove this unjustifiably placed stigma from their shoulders. In Slate's video, "How American Muslims Cope with Islamophobia", Ismail created a video presentation to present this topic to their desired audience with the use of muslim people discussing their experiences of being a muslim in the U.S by answering certain questions aimed towards them. • 41. Hate Crimes: Discrimination On Muslims Being a Muslim in an American country is a struggle and ever since, 9/11 effects took a turn for Muslims. Ever since Trump was elected president, the discrimination against Muslims has grown stronger. People need to be educated about Muslim culture and eliminate the perception that every Muslim is a "terrorist". The community I am looking towards on the University of Kentucky campus is the MSA. The MSA is the Muslim student association and their goal is to promote Islam and teach us all about how peaceful is their religion. After looking in depth the bigger question I will be looking at is what is life like for Muslims post 9/11 (Macroaggression)? Throughout my life I have been witnessing hate crimes, but it may not have been in person but utmost certainly in the news. The news channel portrays us Muslims way wrong. In the news when Muslims do something wrong they are automatically named terrorist while when someone American does something they are called mentally ill. While investigating this broader topic, this made me think even deeper. What was the cause of this? Why are do certain people act like this? Why do people show us hatred? Many of these questions are being popped into my head, ever since I have been researching my topic. What surprises me the most that most people think all Muslims are ... Historically and presently, when Muslims travel to the United States or live in the US they face discrimination because of a small number of Islamic extremists take their religion too far. Historically there have been attacks on America that caused the discrimination. Currently in the US there have been some attacks by extremists and radical terrorists. The "islamic terrorists" are trying to "protect their religion" from the United States of America. In the future, I think there will still be discrimination against Muslim people. As these attacks get more and more frequent and so does the amount of media that covers them. When the media reports about these events they can spread untrue, misleading or misunderstood information. This kind of spread can get cause stereotypes among the American people. Even before 9/11, the effects of stereotyping against Muslims has been present. For example in a Harvard University article about Muslim Americans struggling with stereotypes it states,"in the immediate wake of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, early news accounts included reports of people of "Middle Eastern heritage" fleeing the scene; many journalists, "experts," and even former Representative Dave McCurdy linked the bombing to "fundamentalist Islamic terrorist groups." Stereotypes Against Muslims These are some examples where some leaders have made discriminatory statements against Muslims and it doesn't aim at Muslims only of certain region but, it points to Muslims all over the world. Leaders are chosen by the people to represent the people, but not to create hatred and fear amongst the people for political or any other reasons. Such statements made by great leaders have a great impact on the beliefs of people, as we believe in our leaders and therefore even theirs words are taken into consideration sometimes without a rational thinking. This doesn't affect just the mindset of people but it terribly shapes the attitudes, behaviours, philosophy and even their idea of a religion. • 61. Muslim Women Essay In today's society women are given ample opportunity just as much as men. In some countries, such as middle–eastern nations that is not the case. Muslim women are often perceived to be submissive to Muslim men and unequal. Mohammed never taught for women to be treated as lower class citizens. Nonetheless, the blame is pointed towards the religion of Islam. The Islamic religion began as all monotheist religions representing a belief in one God and moral standards. In the following essay I will discuss and elaborate what Mohammed taught, how women lived in early Islamic society, and what it has become. Mohammed (ca. 570–632) was the founder of Islam which means "submission to God". Prophet Mohammed gave his thoughts of women's roles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Either way you interpret Mohammad's theory made it was clear he believed women played an important role in mothering the believers and advertising Islam. In early Islamic society the laws were followed and obeyed when it came to respecting women. In many cases it was found that women earned property and had an influence on the husband's decision. Veils or hijab as the Muslim's call it, would be worn proudly by women before and today as a way of reducing lust and preventing temptation. Women were permitted to be warriors, politics, and lead religious sanctions. They also traveled freely and played active roles in trade and economic roles. Unfortunately, the era of men and women being equal was hasty. Briefly after Mohammed's death Islamic society changed, so did the interpretations of the Quran to meet different circumstances. Almost simultaneously women became inferior almost being viewed as possessions and property. Having choices was no longer an option for women, whatever the man said became the law. Girls at birth could be killed by their father's because boys carried the name of the family while girls usually were concubines, workers, or sold. Most significantly women's roles depended largely on what the husband's economic status was. If the husband was a farmer the wife had to help in the fields or if the husband worked in the city she had to help run the business. In conclusion, this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Media Influence On Muslims In today's society, news and media have a great influence in how we see individuals and groups within the United States and even globally. One example is how many news outlets are portraying Muslims. They are often described as anti–gay, anti–female, anti–human rights, barbaric, uncivilized, etc. By describing the Muslim community in such harsh terms the media is allowing Muslims to become "Others" and monsters. While terrorism is a huge and scary issue facing this world, we can't fully blame all Muslims for this. However, with the way the media is describing Muslim communities it can almost be easier to view them as monsters and the sole proprietors of terror. Another example may be the 2016 election. Three Muslim Themes This week's reading were very eye opening for me because it brought up subjects that I do not think about often, but there was three themes in particular that stand out in helping me understand Arab Muslims better. One theme is doing research about the Muslim religion. As Rheam suggested, researching about the Muslim culture would could give you some background knowledge about a client's culture and possibly information about where a client is coming from (Rheam & Dr. Garzon, personal communication, n.d.). For instance, some Arab and Muslim communities are tribal in nature where the small communities function as a family to some extent. • 73. Essay On Muslims In America Most would argue that American's negative conceptions of Muslims and the cultures which originate from the Middle East have dramatically risen since 9/11. Research shows that, although this may be true, negative attitudes towards Muslim–Americans have existed throughout the decades, and have only just become more prevalent since the September 11th attacks. In October of 2001, ABC did a poll to come up with the results of what percentage of America has favorable views of Muslim Americans. This poll found that in 2001 there was a 47 percent favorable view of Muslims. In 2010 the percentage dropped to 37 percent. Today that percent is even lower, at just 27 percent. There is much that is misunderstood about Arabs and Muslims in America. This confusion has been promoted by the terrorists' attempt to use religion to justify their acts and has led to episodes of discrimination against both Arabs and Muslims. Due to this mentality Muslims from everywhere and of every group are being discriminated against. Both contents and forms of representation demonstrate the Muslim flexibility in representing visual imagery. • 85. Muslim Stereotypes Essay Stereotypes often determine how we see people who are different from us. Stereotypes play such an important role in our perceptions of others, but what exactly are they? A stereotype is a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing (Williams, 2013). In essence, stereotypes are not limited to different races and ethnicities, but also include: genders, social classes, cultures and even certain hobbies. In light of the increase of negative attention that Muslims have been receiving in the media, the stereotypes discussed in this paper will be centered on Muslims. Specifically, the stereotype that all Muslims are terrorists will be analyzed. Since Islam is a religion that promotes peace and kindness, one could ask where the stereotype that all Muslims are terrorists originated. Following the tragedies of September 11, 2001, Arabs and Muslims have been presented as potential terrorists. This idea stemmed from the theory that, "media bias increases when a specific ethnic, religious, or racial group is seen as a threat to national security." (Stiffler, 2013). Since the attacks on September 11, 2001 Muslims and Arabs have been "hyper–visible" in the media as potential terrorists. U.S citizens who are muslim face great discrimination. These citizens are often called terrorist based on their appearance and heritage. Muslims in the U.S are often mistreated, mistaken, and are threatened by many. Just because they are muslim they are immediately accused of being terrorist. In extreme cases they are removed from airports because they are simply Muslim. The discrimination against Muslims is not right because they are judged based on appearance. We don't wait until we meet someone to judge them. The first thing we see is appearance and that it is where our initial judgement is made. Muslims dress much like the people in terrorist groups, like ISIS, dress. I also feel like ignorance is another contribution to the discrimination of Muslims. We as Americans are not well educated on the Muslim religion. We hear Muslim and immediately think of terrorist because of social media and the news. With the lack of intelligence on Muslim faith and the human nature of judging by appearance, Muslims are very prone to be discriminated as terrorist. It is the same thing as all black people are athletic. I do not think it is fair to people of Muslim faith to be discriminated as terrorist. They are just as nice and hard working as any other U.S citizens. White Americans go and kill a group of people for no reason but we don't discriminate all white Americans for murderers. Stereotypes are used to making interactions with new people easier. However, it also means people forget differences of individuals and assumes based on generalization. Stereotypes eventually leads to social categorization which creates prejudice towards groups. Racial stereotypes such as described in "Look, Mohammed the Terrorist is Coming!" by Nadine Naber, they describe the stereotypical "Mohammed", an Arab or Middle Eastern Muslim man with a beard and brown or dark complexion that usually fits the profile of a terrorist. It's not only Muslims who becomes victims of this stereotype, majority of Middle Easterners, including Christians, Muslims, and even atheists, and majority South Asians, including Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs. Typically, we do not associate the sheer bridal veil with Islam, rather it is fused with images of a black cloak, a chador, covering a Muslim woman from head to toe in Iran (Amer, 10). Unfortunately, the media plays another role in this as this is how many movies, television programs, and newspapers have portrayed these women. Growing up in a country that has only shown images of women in dark, dense coverings, I did not realize that women did not necessarily dress this way. Islamic women have been in the shadows for years, hidden by their spouses, therefore resulting in the reason why so many of them have been the subject of abuse. The devastating incident that led to many deaths on September 11th of 2001, could possibly be the most recent event that has sparked interest with the Muslim population (Daba–Buzoianu et.al 148). Even then, however, Americans were more concerned for their own safety rather than the safety of Muslim women. In the past, these women have had a history of abuse as a result of their disobedience and unfaithfulness to their religion. For example, in Pakistan, "...men, soldiers, and civilians have used rape as a strategy of terrorism against Pakistan's women, particularly those who dare to transgress existing social hierarchies or who belong to stigmatized social groups (Sharlach 95)." Two of the most recent victims of authoritative Muslims that have managed to get their stories heard have been Mukhtaran Mai and Malala Yousafzai. Mai was raped as a result of her brother's crimes and Yousafzai was shot by the Taliban as a result of merely wanting an education (Afzal–Khan 153). Many of us in the United States see it and automatically assume that the person is a terrorist, but what do we really know about the Muslim veil? Caryle Murphy, a writer for The Christian Science Monitor, thinks that we do not fully understand the complexity of the Muslim veil. In "Behind the Veil: Why Islam's Most Visible Symbol Is Spreading," Murphy writes that "Rarely in human history has a piece of cloth been assigned so many roles. However, the real concern Murphy points out is cultural. She writes that "in Western culture [...] masks usually denote deceit or something to hide" and that the veil can prevent Muslim women from assimilating into a Western community where "high stock is placed on face–to–face communication" (4). British Minister Jack Straw brought up this concern when he called the veil a "'visible statement of separation and difference'" (4). France banned the wearing of the head scarf by state school children in 2004, though it decided against banning the burqa throughout the country. Some Middle Eastern countries like Turkey, and even Iran at one time, banned veils in public to try to become more like the West. However, despite Western influence and patriarchal pressure, more and more Muslim women are wearing veils not to accommodate others but out of their strong religious belief that it gets them closer to Allah (4). Murphy concludes by noting that women have fun with the veil when they choose to wear it, making it into a fashionable item. Far from being repressed, these women can "'cover and be beautiful'" (5). After reading the article I better understand the complexities of the Muslim veil. I had no idea, for example, that fashion magazines were devoted to the veil. I can see how it would be difficult for someone in working class America to understand what Muslim women go through. I hear the stereotype regularly at work: "Why ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 141. Muslim Interview Paper For this paper, I have chosen to interview an acquaintance of mine who is a devote Muslim and follower of Islam. For the sake of this assignment I will be referring to him under the pseudonym of Jack. I spoke with Jack about some wide–ranging topics discussing things such as, media, bias, stereotypes, and really in general what being a follower of Islam is like in this divided country right now. In our country, today it's pretty apparent there is a type of fear of Muslims, so much so that 7 heavy populated Muslim countries are not permitted from entering the United States of America. I never had conversations as personal as this with Jack and I feel as if I gained a lot of insight into the types of things minorities, and especially Muslims ... I asked Jack what Islam teaches and what he personally thinks the message is, in Jack's words he believes Islam teaches excellence in character and to carry a spiritual relationship with God in everyday actions. Muslims practice their faith in a different way then I'm accustomed too, for instance I was raised that practicing my faith was going to church once a week. Followers of Islam practice their faith in different ways says Jack. Jack practices his faith every day, there are five daily prayers, fasting during daylight hours in the month of Ramadan, and the pilgrimage to Mecca once in a lifetime, Jack has not made his pilgrimage yet but looks forward to it. I delved into further detail about the daily prayers with Jack, asking him the length of each prayer. Jack says on average each daily prayer last between 5–10 minutes, depending on the prescribed length of the prayer and number of verses. Each of the five prayers has a window of time to be completed in, ranging from one hour to four hour long windows according to Jack. I asked Jack as well about holidays we celebrate related to our religion. Being a Christian I know that we celebrate Christmas as part of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 145. Muslim Female Stereotypes The Muslim women were meeting at an old warehouse in Chicago that was being used for a makeshift mosque on a night to do their daily prayers. On this night Dr.Ingrid Mattson was there and the women were talking about their experiences living here in the United States. She noticed on the way here there was a Muslim school located in an industrial zone. This school was located in this zone because of zoning laws and how the city won't allow the buildings to be built or where they are built. In this zone, it was allowed to be built in an industrial zone. The background of this woman is that they are all immigrants so the majority of this community is made up of immigrants. They are mostly from the Middle East or North Africa, the jobs of these ladies are that they either teach at a religious school but most of them are homemakers (housewives). ... They just want to have friendlier encounters with Americans that are non–Muslim they met in their daily lives. They are convinced that this is difficult because of what they dress in. The Muslim woman population wears something that covers their whole head. Dr.Ingrid Mattson response was ways that could engage in small talk, how to use body language. She also responds by why should they have to strip themselves of something so important. Most Americans don't understand that different types of governments greatly impact "Muslim Dress" for example the Taliban has rules for the woman and men on what is acceptable and what is not. Also, the media plays a big role, a great example of this is in the Us News and World Report where they have an unknown gender in a black veil and said is this a woman or a man or is it a ... • 149. Are Muslims Be Treated Different Should Muslims be treated different?Today I will be writing about Muslims and how there is a lot of social justice. I have many reasons why I chose this topic. Some of the reasons is because people instantly see them as a threat aka isis and terrorism and are racist against them.Another reason I chose this group/topic is because they're always getting discriminated in a racial way. So there's always gonna be Racism in America, but one thing that I myself Jose Ocampo has noticed and seen in videos and also news reports is that people are mostly racist against Muslims. Now I have an example of people being racist against Muslims,He is a youtuber that goes by the name of Adam Saleh. He is known for doing pranks on youtube and also social experiments about racism and other stuff, but he was getting on the plane for his flight with his best friend Slim Albaher, they started talking Arabic because he was on the phone with his mom. Once people heard that they were talking Arabic they instantly got racist and reported them to the main flight office and they eventually got kicked ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 153. Muslim Culture Exactly what is considered as a Muslim? A Muslim is defined as a believer in Islam, however a Black Muslim is considered as a member of the nation of Islam. A follower of the religion of Islam, as Muslims, means one who submits to god. Muslims came in the seventeenth century with slaves from Africa. The history of Muslim Americans goes back more than 400 years. America is called home for the Muslims, they present as taxi drivers, homemakers, and also entertainers. Muslim Americans make up at least one percent of the U.S. population ("Teaching Tolerance"). Muslims are considered to have unique beliefs and traditions of their culture. For instance, one of their beliefs is that hard work pays off. Seventy–one percent agree that most people who want to get ahead in the U.S. can make it if they're willing to work. ("Muslim Americans: Middle Class and Mostly Mainstream"). Muslims were the first to establish awareness of astronomy. Their outlook and values are extremely religious and very educated. They are worried about their life and how they're living. Muslims are obligated to pray five times a day such as pre–dawn, midday, afternoon, sunset, and night. They believe that there is only one god, the religion of Abraham. I learned that Muslims who don't pray five times a day are considered as living an ungodly life. However, I believe the opposite which is that a person does not have to pray at a specific time every day, but rather when a person feels the need to pray. ... Gilani has said, "We are fighting to destroy the enemy. We are dealing with evil at its roots and its roots are America. He says that the "U.S. has become a pawn of hidden hands that use America's wealth and the innocent blood of their sons and daughters to wage war against Muslims." (Mauro,"Muslims of the America MOA"). MOA organization is constantly monitored by Homeland Security. Homeland Security is an American organization considered to keep America our country safe and secure against terrorism. There are five home secure mission such as, prevent terrorism and enhancing security, secure and manage our borders, enforce and administer our immigration laws, safeguard and secure cyberspace and ensure resilience to disasters. Lipton states an article written by Ryan Mauro states that the Department of Homeland Security says MOA is linked to Jamaat Ul–Fuqra, a Pakistan militant group led by Gilani. In 1998, the State Department said Ul–Fuqra is an "Islamic sect that seeks to purify Islam through violence." (Muslims of the America MOA.) I find this information to be disturbing because in my readings I found out that MOA says Osama Bin Ladin is a Saudi activist. An activist is someone that fights for their country and its people. I know Osama as the person that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
