World Champions
My pre-adolescent compass pointed north, but it was a baseball bat calling where the ball
was going after my swing. That compass didn’t work too well, but it still pointed. It wasn’t
just any baseball for me, it was Braves baseball. We moved back to the states in 1993 and I
had a cousin who gave me the ‘92 Braves baseball card set, and I was hooked. I fell in love
with David Justice, Rafael Belliard, Mark Lemke, and Ron Gant. I watched every game
with my dad and soon it was Fred McGriff, Javy Lopez, and Paint-The-Corners-Greg-
Maddux. I hear Maddux got a dog when he retired and he still hasn’t walked him yet. By
10 years old we moved to Atlanta and my infatuation was set. We also happened to be go-
ing to a new level of baseball! Since baseball was my world, it was fitting that we would
give it a series to complete the dream. I will never forget Andruw Jones’ major league de-
but hitting back-to-back homeruns at 18 years old! I will never forget Marquis Grissom
catching that final out and the braves were World Champions! They “were” champions
and now fast forward to 26 years later and they “are” champions yet again. Only this time I
am the dad and my son Gabriel is the Braves fan watching. The out of this world experi-
ence continues. Only this time my compass is working a little bit better. It finds enjoyment
in these moments but it no longer finds its direction and hope in baseball. Since a world
champion is crowned each year, the title will come and it will go! Sometimes it will take
26 years. Soon, if the world continues to turn, there will be another earthly victor. Where
does our compass point to find our true world champion today?
“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors {champions} through him who loved
us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor
things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be
able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:37-39).
Jesus is our world’s champion, and through Him, it will only find victory. The game was
great and some might even call it heaven on earth. Yet this earthling knows what brings
the celestial beings off their feet in euphoria. "...there will be more joy in heaven over one
sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repen-
tance" (Luke 15:7). Run. Home. It brings more joy than any home run. No matter the se-
ries of events you face, you can overcome through Jesus. With Christ we are all world
champions!
