In one of the Reader’s Digest Magazines from the year
1996 a man wrote of a friend who often told him about
the problems he had getting his son to clean his room.
The son would always agree to tidy up, but then wouldn’t
follow through. After high school the young man joined
the Marine Corps. When he came home for leave after
basic training, his father asked him what he had learned
in the service. “Dad,” he said. “I learned what ‘now’
means.”
It’s a hard lesson for many to learn. Too many of
us learn early on in life how to procrastinate and become
too skilled in that. Lord Acton, a British historian, noted
that “A wise person does at once, what a fool does at
last. Both do the same thing; only at different times.” It is
amazing how many times in the Bible we are reminded of
the importance of “now.”
Salvation, the greatest need of every man is
available to all “now.” There is no promise of its availabil-
ity tomorrow. In fact there is no promise of tomorrow.
James tells us, “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or
tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a
year there, buy and sell, and make a profit’; 14
whereas you do not know what will happen tomor-
row. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that ap-
pears for a little time and then vanishes
away” (James 4:13, 14). This is why the apostle Paul
tells us “For He says: ‘In an acceptable time I have
heard you, And in the day of salvation I have helped
you.’ Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now
is the day of salvation” (II Cor. 6:2). One must act now
if he wants to be saved. Delay in obedience too often
leads to failure and death for each time we delay in some
action it becomes easier and easier to delay it the next
time. Martin Luther wisely observed, “How soon not now,
becomes never.”
Now is the time to put away our bad habits and
the sins of the old man and begin a new life in Christ.
Paul told the church at Colossae, “But now you your-
selves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice,
blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. 9 Do
not lie to one another, since you have put off the old
man with his deeds, 10 and have put on the new man
who is renewed in knowledge according to the image
of Him who created him” (Col. 3:8-10). Notice that
Paul did not say that the right time to do this is tomorrow,
but “now.” Some have become Christians but have since
become indifferent and are now in a spiritual stupor.
These Christians need to wake up for we are now nearer
to our final salvation. Paul told the brethren at Rome,
“And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high
time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is
nearer than when we first believed. 12 The night is
far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off
the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of
light” (Rom. 13:11). Let us all learn the meaning of
“now” and become obedient immediately to the will of our
God!
