Essay On Women In Social Work
Introduction
A large component of the social work profession is cultural competency. According to the National
Association of Social Workers, in order to be culturally competent, social workers should
understand culture and its' role in society (National Association of Social Workers [NASW], 2008).
Social workers should be able to recognize the strength of each culture, have knowledge of their
clients'' cultures, and provide culturally sensitive services to each individual with whom they work
with (NASW, 2008).
Is it possible to be culturally competent when there are cultural imbalances within the positions held
by social work professionals? Social work is widely known as a "female–dominated" profession.
However, are females still the majority when it comes to leadership roles? The research conducted
aims to find out how gender is represented in social work leadership roles and the implications this
representation has for social workers and the social work profession.

Females In Social Work Throughout History
The profession of social work has been around for over 100 years and throughout those 100 plus
years the gender composition of social workers has remained mostly female (Abrams & Curran,
2004). Female activist Jane Addams called upon women to work towards social change. "Jane
Addams, a leading figure in women's organized social reform and social work networks, impelled
women to seek remedies to the growing problems associated with a rapidly

Rebecca Haidt's Women, Work And Clothing
Rebecca Haidt's Women, work and clothing in eighteenth–century Spain is a nine chapter book that
shows and explains the history of how clothing was able to hit all corners of Spanish society of the
18th century. She reveals what the women did to get the clothing they wore, even if it was trading,
barging, stealing, selling, and creating garments that marked their social status in their society they
were living in. The author also goes in each chapter about the depection of them in the theater. She
has a Dedication, List of Illustrations, and Acknowledgements before the Introduction chapter out of
the nine chapters of the main book. After the conclusion there is a Bibliography and an Index.

She had to restrict to it these two areas because in her own words, "... In part because the tonadilla is
a particularly madrilenan theatrical form, and in part because my research has for years focused on
the eighteenth–century capital. (43)" Moving on to the second chapter of Haidt's book.
The second chapter of this book is, Petimetria, women's work and the economics of desire. She
opens up this chapter, with that this man, Pedro Rodriquez, Conde de Campomanes in 1775 told

clueless about the reality of what was going on with the poor and working middle class of women in
Spanish society during this time, that they were doing labor and were stuggling to earn money for

TV: Where Men Work And Women Clean
The idea of what a women's responsibilities around the house are have evolved tremendously in the
past 60 years. In this modern era, women are no longer expected to spend their time at home
cooking or taking care of their children. It is amazing to see how much society has changed since.
However, cleaning somehow has been where the line was drawn. Multiple studies show that women
do most of the housekeeping around the home in modern day despite the other changes happening
toward equality. In Sorata Chemaly's "TV: Where Men Work and Women Clean," the author
successfully conveyed to the audience through an effective appeal to logos, and pathos that the
media has distorted the idea of the way a woman's life in relation to working and staying home. ...

Although, they all may seem harmless and perhaps even entertaining, there are aspects of them that
consumers do not always notice. She points out the obvious gap between men and women who work
in TV shows. The imbalance shapes the idea of what adult women and men's job are which often
feeds to stereotypical ideologies. Instead of promoting young girls to have ambition, the media is
teaching them that men are the ones who work and have successful occupations while women are
unemployed or struggling. Of course, all these commercials, films, and TV shows who could be
potentially harming children by subconsciously advocating sexist views are made by men. The
author then gives five suggestions of how the media could potentially deal with the "imbalance in

The 's Work Displayed How Women
Friedan's work displayed how women were regressing back into the role of homemaker, which was
their most valued role under the influence of the mystique. The McCarthyite period caused much
unrest in America because of the creation of the ideology of gender roles. Freidan argues:
"The public image, in the magazines and television commercials, is designed to sell washing
machines, cake mixes...but the power of that image...comes from this: American women no longer
know who they are. They are sorely in need of a new image to help them find their identity"
(Friedan, 1992, c1963: 63–64).
This is a quandary Esther faces which is empathised through Esther's boyfriend 's mother Mrs
Willard, who believes "'what a man is is an arrow into the future ... Show more content on

This metaphor of the fig tree presents how Esther is given many opportunities in her life but it seems
that society will not let her fulfil them all. Plath here relates Esther's anxieties over her future to
more general problems with gender roles. Janet Badia contends:
"Esther's frustration is not unreasonable given the societal constrictions regarding women's roles in
mid–century America...the problem lies in her desire to have what society tells her is impossible...
Esther is told again and again that her choices, while hers to make, will have repercussions she
cannot control"(Badia, 2008: 133).
She does not like how men get the choice to pick a family and a career. Especially when Buddy
views her as "'Crazy" and "neurotic. [She] could never settle down in either the country or the city.'"
(89) Buddy makes us assume that the only sane choice for women is to become a wife, even though
Esther questions this value system her fear of inadequacy makes her see the branches in a negative
light. She finds these stereotypical genders roles very unattractive and does not believe men should
be able to dictate a women's life. Thus, she is resisting against these gender roles that are placed on
her by the society especially as Plath was writing at the time of second wave feminism, which was
trying to reassert these roles but by resisting she is showing how

Women Should Not Work Too Hard
Throughout history women have been taught that in many ways they are the lesser gender, and they
have always been held to certain societal standards, however, women in today's society are
beginning to challenge these standards through their musical careers. In the 19th century, women
were believed to be the weaker gender due to biological basis. They visually appeared much smaller
thus alluding to the idea that they have less physical stamina than men. This ideology has furthered
the beliefs of women all throughout history up until now. Women are expected to be able to
complete less work than men, and they are not seen as able to withstand harder physical work. With
this, it has been seen as acceptable all throughout society to pay women less than men considering
they could not do the same amount of work. Additionally, women are thought to be very sickly and
weak during their "time of the month". Society also has valued the reproductive system on women
immensely. The idea that women should not work too hard due to the possibility of becoming
infertile was ingrained in society thus furthering the idea that women should not be held to the same
standards as men. Additionally in the 19th century, the idea of womanhood developed. Women were
expected to go to church and teach their children about the Bible, and they were expected to stay
pure until they were married off. They also had certain standards of how they should look and act.
They were expected to dress modestly, be

Afghanistan Women Work
My charity's name is Afghanistan Women Employment Agency. We are working toward giving
women in Afghan jobs. Many Women in Afghan struggle with getting jobs because they don't all
have a good education or they never went to school. The website trustineducation said, "Only 40%
of Afghan girls attend elementary school, and only one in 20 girls attend school beyond the sixth
grade." Hearing this made me feel angry on the inside because education is the most important thing
to have in your life. Even though education was a huge factor in life the women that were well
educated didn't always get a job. When women are married in Afghan they are married young. Budd
MacKenzie said on his website "Almost 60% of girls are married by 16. Women activists say up to
80 percent of marriages in poor rural areas are either forced or arranged." Putting this sentence and
my knowledge on Afghanistan together made me think why women were not employed. ... Show

The students of Mount Holyoke College had came together and said, "Islam gives women rights,
including rights to work, the ability to choose the man she will marry, among others. However, in
Afghanistan, many times women have not been given these specific rights." They had also said that
it was almost 15 hundred years back when this had happened. When Afghanistan was not
independent women were given some rights about marriage like, they didn't have to marry the
husband's closest relative if the husband had ever died. Also the women could choose to either stay

Women in the Work Force Essay
Women in the Work Force
Working in a factory which is similar to living in a third world country is difficult. Horrible,
intolerable conditions haunt workers at home and in the working environment. Women lead tough
lives because they are dictated orders, by men, in and out of the house. Many women have families
to support, so making little salaries is a strain on the family. The main issue with conditions in the
work force is that management does not have a clear understanding of what the women and the
children working are going through. Working conditions in third world countries are similar to some
working conditions in America.
In third world countries, a woman in the family has expected roles as a wife and a mother. ... Show

According to Louie, "Like the 19th–centruy sweatshop middle–men, many of today's subcontractors
survive the competition by "sweating" their workers out of wage, hour, benefits, and safety rights"
(4). It was hard for women to go home to a similar environment; one that they had faced all day at
work.
In third world countries, at work there are expectations to be followed from women. According to
Stromquist, "Another mechanism of social control is the use of sexual stereotypes regarding
women's abilities and skills" (5). Since women are seen as being weak and feminine, their bosses
who were men, thought they could only handle doing jobs that would be too easy for men to do.
Women get confused about how they should act at work because women receive conflicting
messages about how to perform their jobs. This happens when there are many bosses on duty and all
of them want to do things their way. There are conflicting messages because when one boss walks
by and the women are yelled at to do a job a certain way and when another boss walks by the
women are yelled at to do the same job a different way than before. There are different tasks that
women must do on duty. For example, Mrs. Yu Sau Kwan received injuries from activities while on
the job. At her job in Chinatown she would get pains in her back, hip, and fingers from sewing nine–
hundred zippers a day. For this she could have received Workers Compensation, but no one

In order for them to be able to have food, housing, healthcare, etc., they must have some form of a
decent income to be able to provide for themselves or their family. In order to have an income, you
must have some sort of employment and for some individuals; this is not an easy task due to
problems they may be encountering that they cannot fix on their own. In order to respond to the
situations of clients in poverty appropriately, the social worker must use a poverty aware approach,
meaning they should try to be aware of what the client or family they are working with is currently
going through (Davis, 2005). By being knowledgeable about my client's situation, I will have an
easier time trying to get my client to feel comfortable with me so I can fully understand what they
are going through. Understanding the poverty aware approach calls for a basic understanding of the
theories of poverty and income inequality (Davis, 2005). Also, it is important to have an awareness
of the economic, social and cultural factors sustaining poverty, as well as the social, physical and
emotional impact of poverty (Davis,

Familly-Work Conflicts with Women
Are females seen as having family–work conflicts at Hydrogen Group than their male co–workers?
Introduction
Based on a recent report from the ILO (International Labour Organisation), more females are
engaged in work today than ever in the past. Despite a significant improvement in the involvement
of females in the labour force with equal experience and qualification level as males, female
workers still face the glass ceiling and a number of challenges in career development (McGraw
2011). Family responsibilities, career interruptions and gender relatated differences in work
experiences have attemped to justify the lower levels of female career progression (Hakim, 2002).
Female workers still find that they are differentially treated in terms of career development than their
male co–workers (Lyons and Smith 2008) moreover, they still being discriminated in workplace
(Bell et al.2002). Metz (2009) critisises the common perception that educated and expereinced
women cannot fully contribute to their organisations because their main focus is the family care
responsibilities. The gaps in exsisting literature encourage to produce this research proposal.
Although mentioned issues continue to be important factors preventing women from success in their
careers, this study shows the urgency for continous researching that would draw a greater image of
career progression of females in a small size organisation. Female career progression is a common
issue at the present, therefore it is

The Work Of The Heart : Young Women And Emotion
Martha Tomhave Blauvelt, in her book The Work of the Heart: Young Women and Emotion, 1780–
1830, proclaims that "we need more useful conceptual tools to understand history as men and
women actually experienced it."i Indeed, Blauvelt 's book is an attempt to forge these tools through
a meticulous examination of the diaries of young women in America at the turn of the nineteenth
century in the hopes of understanding how these women constructed and expressed their emotions.
She employs the work of two sociologists as the theoretical apparatuses of the book: first, Arlie
Russell Hochschild 's idea of emotion as work, something which requires an active effort to adhere
to the rules dictating how one is supposed to feel in a given situation.ii ... Show more content on

The organization of the book explores this private rehearsal and public performance in different
realms of young women 's lives: Chapter 1 is on social class; Chapter 2, education in a private
boarding school; Chapter 3, courtship; Chapter 4, anger; Chapter 5, the reconstruction of emotion in
marriage and religion. Note that at no point in the book does Blauvelt give an explicit biographical
sketch of any of her women, but rather only elucidates the lives of her subjects within specific
contexts. As such, Blauvelt refers to Elizabeth Cranch 's erstwhile fiance early in the book, and only
names him and his eventual death much later; similarly, Abigail May 's early death is not mentioned
until halfway through the book!vi These problems are not problems with Blauvelt 's scholarship, but
rather with the sources themselves: diaries are performances of a different kind, and "ego–
documents" demonstrate an image of others far more than the diarist. In the first three chapters,
there is an explicit tension between what women wrote in their diaries and how they actually
interacted with society writ large. Sarah Connell 's diary speaks of how her "Papa was low–spirited,

Women 's Work Setting Environment
Women around the world have not been treated equally in a work setting environment. In some
places women aren 't even allowed to work, but in our nation the United States of America this is
not our scenario. The scenario in the United States of America is that women are allowed to work,
but unfortunately women are not being treated the same manner in which a man is treated in a work
setting. Women go through a lot of obstacles in a workplace, this should not be happening at this
time in date. We as a society tend to say we have grown and prosper and that this is the land of
opportunity, but how can such a statement be said if women are not given the same opportunity as
men are. In a work setting women tend to be paid much less the man is paid for doing the same
exact job. Then because women are paid less its affects them in their daily life. Women also face the
difficulties of not being promoted as often as men are in a work setting. After facing such difficulties
in a work setting they still have issues of sexual harassment to deal with. Then, if women choose to
become pregnant, they have another difficulty to face. Overall the worst obstacle and what I feel is
the one that starts all of this is the challenge of women being hired for a job. The only reason why
women are not treated the same is a simple observation if a person is male or female makes all the
difference in a work setting.

Equality of Women in the Work Sector
Historically, in many countries, women have been considered to belong to the lower and weaker
section of society. In the Indian culture as well, there is ongoing discrimination against women and
it is inclining day by day. The female section has to face a lot and different types of discrimination –
at home, in schools, in colleges, while using public transport, and even at the workplace. In this
article, my intention is to elaborate upon gender discrimination against women at the workplace.
There are a very few percentage of the women section who work in the urban areas like– offices,
warehouses, boutiques, call–centers.Inspite helping the women sections the colleagues , managers
and other employees trouble them at the peak. When a woman applies for a job and for god for bit
she is pretty then she is told either in a direct manner or an indirect manner to keep a physical
relationship with the head of the office or the manger of the office. They are literally tortured from
starting till the end. In the interview stage also they are asked very personal questions which they do
not like to answer but they are made to answer or they are blackmailed that the company or the
office will not give them a job if the questions are not answered in a correct way. Sometimes in an
interview mobile phones and the laptops of the women are checked so that they can take–out the
personal information of the female. Mostly the women are hired because of their physical attributes

Role of Women in Hesiod's Theogony and Works and Days
In most Greek mythology there is a general hostility towards the female sex, which relays that most
poets and writers themselves were sexist. Throughout Hesiod's Theogony and Works and Days,
women are portrayed in a very subservient manner, placing them far below men and are almost
despised. However, in more than one instance, manipulation, women's true power, is shown. They
are constantly described as beautiful temptresses, which could be thought of as the weakness of
many men. When Theogony and Works and Days are looked at as a whole it is obvious that Hesiod's

The article "Family Coping Strategies: Balancing Paid Employment and Domestic Labour" by Meg
Luxton sheds a different view on the responsibilities laid out in family life. In today's society it's
almost a necessity to have both parents working, to support a family. This fact, along with the
improvement of females having independence, is the cause of the ever growing number of working
women. These, along with many other statistics are showing the rapid improvement and change that
woman and families are showing. Year after year we can see the dynamics of the family shifting. It

Having a job gives women a sense of control of their lives and an overall high self–esteem because
they are recognized by their husbands as well as children for their work. Not only does it give
women something to do, it also ensures stability in one's family income.
Here are a few statistics that demonstrate the challenge of balancing paid employment and domestic
labor within the family setting in Canada. This challenge arises because of the inequalities between
what men and women earn in the work force and also because of the uneven distribution of chores
in unpaid domestic labor. If we compare salaries in 1997, men had the higher income of the couple
in 77% of Canadian families. (Globe and Mail 21 Feb. 2000). This situation has however improved
since the early 60's when 70% of women in male–female couples were dependent on their spouse as
the sole income provider. (Oderkirk, Silver and Prud'homme 1994.) Also when couples divorced
men's incomes raised on average 10% whereas women's income usually decreased by 23% in
1997(Toronto Star 10 April 1997). Women feel pressured to work from home or part–time because
they are often expected to do most of the domestic labour and this is their way to balance the two. In
1993 they represented nearly 70% of Canadian

Gender and Work Midterm Gender and work exist sociologically as a way to maintain both

segregation continues to be a challenging task for most women. Wages continue to be uneven, and
wives continue to bear most of the child rearing and domestic responsibilities despite increasingly

In addition to defining gender, Padavic and Reskin coin the term "gendering" to describes
circumstances or outcomes that, like gender, are socially constructed and tend to give males certain

who either worked for pay or were actively seeking paid work. The labor force split working people
into three different groups–wage workers, unemployed, and nonemployed. This distinction between
paid work in the labor market and unpaid domestic work by the "nonemployed" has had important
consequences for gender inequality. Since then, men have been more likely than women to belong to
the labor force, and women have been more likely than

Women To Work At Lowell Essay
In Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1822, a new opportunity arose for young single women. A factory
operated there with several cotton mills. Their work environment wasn't in the best shape as their
factory yard was full of mud. The work involved cleaning, burling, inking, marking, and fine–
drawing cloth. These women could work long days at the mills in exchange for pay. This work
became very popular and many women came to work at the mills from morning until night.
However, they didn't receive an extraordinary amount of money for it. Josephine Baker claimed that
the most positive aspect of her work was the fact that her earned money comes quickly, and though
the work is intensive that she is free at the end of her work day, and there is access to lectures,
schools, and libraries. She found it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Surely Lowell was very intensive, but it is a choice. Lowell offers a variety of benefits, like pay,
school, and libraries. Lowell offered a new opportunity to women. It might also help a woman to be
independent. Lowell gave a new role to women in American society. No longer were women
banished to their homes, dependent on family or a husband. This opened new opportunities in
women's lives because they could also partake in the lectures, schooling, and libraries permitted by
the factory. However, they still participated in a male dominated society with probably not much
hope of advancing in the factory setting. In the end, at least this movement would open doors for
many women in the future. Being able to work in the factory puts their foot in the door for greater
things. In the future women may make a stand for having their rights. Surely they deserve the right
to an appropriate wage that wouldn't lessen every couple of years. This provided a greater chance
for women to have other jobs in the future. Josephine Baker gives her opinion by submitting her

Immigrant Women At Work Case Study
In 2014, over 11.17 million Mexican immigrants came to the United States. (Zong) So many
Mexican immigrants came to America in search of work. They worked in order to send money back
to their families in Mexico. The workers are treated unfairly, they receive an unequal pay, are forced
to work very uncomfortable conditions and live in labor camps.
A woman named Delmi Cruz came to America from Honduras. Cruz and her son were put in an
immigrant detention center in Texas. She had to work in order to make money for food and other
things they needed. She cleaned bathrooms and other areas of the building. Cruz was only paid three
dollars a day for working there. (Hennessy– Fiske) In America women working make seventy–seven
cents for every dollar a male working makes, but immigrant women make seventy–one cents for
every dollar a male immigrant worker makes. (Staff) Cruz was not even making that much."5.4

Women Empowerment : Work, Sweat, Pray
Women Empowerment: Work, Sweat, Pray Zora Neale Hurston was one of many authors who left
an impact on society, particularly black America. Hurston is a remarkable author who reflects her
life in most of her writings. She was a writer during the Harlem Renaissance Era. After much
success, she was acknowledged as "Queen of the Harlem Renaissance," yet her literary work was
not given proper recognition in the beginning because she chose to write things in a different
perspective than the normal political mindset dealing with race. Hurston explored women
empowerment and feminism in her writing. She developed very strong, resilient women, but these

Delia Jones spent her weeks washing the townspeople clothing. She paid the bills, she cooked and
cleaned. She even did yard work: "She had built it for her old, days, and planted one by one the trees

stay at home and maintain the household. They were expected to wash and fold the laundry, cook for
the family, maintain a clean household, wash the dishes, and do whatever the man of the house
wanted them to do. She really enjoyed her work. The way the text described her physically to

Women and Work in the 19th Century Essay
During the 19th century, change was in the air. Industrialization, involving the movement of labor
and resources away from agriculture and toward manufacturing and commercial industries, was in
progress. As a result, thousands of women were moving from the domestic life to the industrial
world. During the 19th century, the family economy was replaced by a new patriarchy which saw
women moving from the small, safe world of family workshops or home–based businesses to larger
scale sweatshops and factories. Prior to these changes, career options were limited for women. The
work of a wife was often alongside her husband, running a household, farm or plantation. "Indeed, a

Industrial working conditions were often unsanitary and the work was dangerous to untrained and
unskilled women. The education of children decreased due to the long hours the women had to
work. Home life suffered as women were faced with the double burden of factory work followed by
domestic chores and child care. Since employment was unpredictable and pay was low, prostitution
became a way of life for lower class women. Women, considered less important in society, had to
deal with men assuming supervisory roles and receiving higher wages. Also, the men began forming
worker oppositions proposing that child and female labor should be abolished from certain jobs. "In
the 1830s, America's first attempt to form a National Trades Union was motivated in large part by
working men's desire to limit competition from female employment" (Woloch 126). All of these
troubles made it difficult for women to find and maintain employment. Later in the 19th century,
some women held jobs in the domestic–service market and worked as maids or nannies. Expansion
in industrial and retail areas led to an increase in the number of available white collar jobs. These
jobs were filled predominately by women looking for better pay and working conditions. Big
businesses and companies began to employ women as typists, secretaries, file clerks, and

Work And Family Expectations For Women: The Glass Ceiling
Work and Family Expectations for Women: The Glass Ceiling
During the second half of the twentieth century, several societies experienced a radical social change
with the evident active presence of women in many areas (Frone, Russell, & Cooper, 1992). Women
started to enter in the work labor and pursue higher education through enrollment in universities
(Allen, 2001). Moreover, there has been an increase of women's participation in the economy
(becoming CEOs of big companies) and in the politics (having women Senators and Presidents;

Precarious Work Vs Single Women Essay
Secondly, precarious work affects the living state of women financially as single mothers and how
they were seen dependent primarily on their husbands wages and occupational choices. Now as
single mothers they are unable to escape the debilitating effects of impoverishment which is shown
through Ann Duffy and Nancy Mandell's article. This article articulates that a women's income
drops by 20 to 40 percent as single mother because they do not have a male as a breadwinner for the
family (Duffy and Mandell, 253). Females are more likely to experience this situation because if
they do go into the work workforce they are payed less than men. Single mothers tend to be
stigmatized when they receive social assistance in taking care of their children due to the Victorian

The Domestic Work Of African American Women
United States' southeast region can be described as unique when it comes to its economic system
and its social structure due to the multiple political and constitutional problems these structures have
created. The most important factor of these problems raised could be said that was the social
structure, regarding the interaction between the different social groups of this southeastern
community. From the conflicts that aroused between the different White European settlers, to the
adjustment of the African Americans to labor, the southerner society, or community, was created.
The commodification of the domestic work of African American women affected in great ways their
performance in white households, as well as their portrayal in advertisements, where they were
shown to be a need to white southerners during the 1920's. Although these advertisements
approached the public with the idea that domestic work was a necessity, the advances in society
made of their work one that day–by–day became less needed.
The problems of race the United States confronted are deeply imbedded in the historical past of the
nation. Due to the fact that a great majority of the nation's African Americans lived in former slave
states, white southerners constantly came up new ways to impose white supremacy on their black
neighbors. Consequently, black southerners fought back against unequal treatment, discrimination,
and the violent white people who executed racial massacres. After the

Gender inequality Inequalities have been prevalent since the beginning of civilization. Up until the

Within this movement, the role of the women fell short to discrimination and gender inequalities.
The argument stands forth and is true that there are gender inequalities prevailing in all aspects of
society. Thus, the concept of gender is not as easy as it may sound; since gender has a role to play in
all aspects of society as it depends on all variables which include gender roles and sex. Every aspect

Mothers at perspective
There are many popular beliefs with respect to the work and family issues that characterize working
mothers as they have divided concentration between work and home, they are considered as less
committed and less competent, and hence they are treated less worthy as employees. The stereotype
thinking for working mothers has looked at mothers as just secondary earners who have their main
earning husbands for the household. However, the fact is that 10 million houses are run by single
moms, and just 6 million households are run by a husband with her non working spouse. In the
present time debates of gender inequality at workplaces and pay differences, majority of the
assumptions state that due to child responsibilities, the effort, motivation, and commitment of the
working mothers have to suffer. And, it is also observed in many arguments that mothers can't stand
to the current expectation of what an ideal worker has to adhere to, as she in spite of committing
herself to work, faces distractions from home (Cech, 2012).
Apart from the stereotype assumptions, the stereotype thinking as been noticed in the real world as
well where working mothers have to face tough situations in life. Various researches since last
decade have found that working mothers, though they work

Role of Women in Maupassant's Works
Guy de Maupassant is one of the most popular French short story writers from the 19th Century and
was also considered to be the father of modern short story writings. Maupassant belonged to the
naturalistic school and took issues like the attitudes of the bourgeoisie or the Franco–Prussian War,
along with the highly fashionable life of France in his age, and these became the key aspects of the
cynical style of writing.
Taking some of the aspects of his life in relation to his works, it is stated that he normally didn't like
work and whenever he found free time, for which he actually searched for, he used to spend it in
pursuit of women, which can probably relate to how he expresses hypocrisy in women's characters

gravestones by their relations, substituting the truth instead – They were all writing at the same
time, on the threshold of their eternal abode, the truth, the terrible and the holy truth of which
everybody was ignorant, or pretended to be ignorant, while they were alive."
Keeping the above statement in mind, it can be said that the entire truth of the woman in concern
and the truth of their relationship was a lie. And this is affective for the woman because the man
showed the chivalry and honestly loved her. He had faith in her that's why he was ‘ignorant' and
did not try to judge her actions, in the end, she herself (in the dreams or not) came out and revealed
herself to him. So initially what was written was removed and the epitaph said:
"Having gone out in the rain one day, in order to deceive her lover, she caught cold and died."
The woman is deceptive and in turn highlights the man in a positive light indicating how he is
honest and chivalric.
Keeping the same notion in mind, another story about a woman deceiving her husband is the "False

runs throughout the short story; the fact that the woman who appears pious and virtuous (as the

impact of motherhood on women's work as unstable across generations and that those with children

These data allowed an analysis of the women's conjugal and parental situations and their entry and

1976 (Pacaut et al). Past researches either supported or opposed the perceived incompatibility
between motherhood and employment (Pacaut et al, 2012). This study revealed an increase in work
interruption among women who began working before having children. It also showed a big decline
in the gap that separates women with children and those without. The study concluded that changing
attitudes towards mothers' work did not appear to ease the balance of work and motherhood. These

Women in the Work Force– 1960s
The 1960s were a time of social and political identification for American women. Despite the
victory of voting rights, women still experienced discrimination in daily life. With the current
millenium drawing to a close, women today still express concern of unequal treatment. It is
important to glance backwards in history and remember the struggles that our mothers and
grandmothers experienced. Thanks to the women of the past, women of the present are able to

became famous for their efforts: "When thinking about the most famous civil rights activists of the

seen as less effective and authoritative than the men involved in the movements.
In the 1960s women were being recruited into the labor force in large numbers making education a

positions allowed more women to work outside the home: "...the old female–dominated occupations

Victorian Women in the Work Force Essay
Victorian Women in the Work Force The Victorian period is often defined by its antique images of
flowers, doilies, rosy–cheek children and intricate fashion. However, these trite images shadow the
true realities of middle–class families struggling to succeed in the emerging business world.
Traditionally, the men spent long days in the city working out business affairs, while the women
stayed home with the children preparing meals and planning for social gatherings. Work was often
not an option for women because they were seen as incapable of any duty outside of the home.
However, with the onset of Queen Victoria's reign, the women of England slowly began to challenge

She was capable of handling governmental affairs while also showing herself to be obedient to
Prince Albert, her beloved husband, which became an admirable trait among the English wives of
this period (20). Likewise, many historians refer to the Queen as a paradox because she combined
her middle–class roots with her aristocratic reign. As one author says, "That the queen of England
became the central embodiment of middle–class familial values held great significance for the
representation and role of bourgeois women" (Langland 64). Queen Victoria's concern for the
middle–class served as a basis by which English women were able to go outside of their domestic
realm and break some of the existing stereotypes.
Stereotypes of Victorian Women
The stereotypes of this period classified the ideal Victorian woman as being family oriented and
subservient to their male counterparts. She was supposed to "love children and also to avoid hurtful
blunt statements" and "make her husband the center of her life and be the Light of the Home while
her husband tangled with the world at large" (Palmer). Marriage was supposed to be the Victorian
woman's highest aim so that she could fulfill her aspiration of creating a family (Dunhill 23). Within

During the first half of the 19th century, only few women worked. The majority of paid labour for
women was service work. Census records and newspaper advertisements from this period show
women worked as midwives, gardeners, washerwomen, dressmakers and on occasion, innkeepers
(Byrne, 2015). In addition to the small amount of work available, women also had to attend to
domestic duties at home. Cooking meals and cleaning was a constant and primary responsibility.
Subsequently, cooking was only a small part of women's work. With money so scarce, families had

Essay On Women In Social Work

  • 1. Essay On Women In Social Work Introduction A large component of the social work profession is cultural competency. According to the National Association of Social Workers, in order to be culturally competent, social workers should understand culture and its' role in society (National Association of Social Workers [NASW], 2008). Social workers should be able to recognize the strength of each culture, have knowledge of their clients'' cultures, and provide culturally sensitive services to each individual with whom they work with (NASW, 2008). Is it possible to be culturally competent when there are cultural imbalances within the positions held by social work professionals? Social work is widely known as a "female–dominated" profession. However, are females still the majority when it comes to leadership roles? The research conducted aims to find out how gender is represented in social work leadership roles and the implications this representation has for social workers and the social work profession. Literature Review Females In Social Work Throughout History The profession of social work has been around for over 100 years and throughout those 100 plus years the gender composition of social workers has remained mostly female (Abrams & Curran, 2004). Female activist Jane Addams called upon women to work towards social change. "Jane Addams, a leading figure in women's organized social reform and social work networks, impelled women to seek remedies to the growing problems associated with a rapidly ... • 2. Rebecca Haidt's Women, Work And Clothing Rebecca Haidt's Women, work and clothing in eighteenth–century Spain is a nine chapter book that shows and explains the history of how clothing was able to hit all corners of Spanish society of the 18th century. She reveals what the women did to get the clothing they wore, even if it was trading, barging, stealing, selling, and creating garments that marked their social status in their society they were living in. The author also goes in each chapter about the depection of them in the theater. She has a Dedication, List of Illustrations, and Acknowledgements before the Introduction chapter out of the nine chapters of the main book. After the conclusion there is a Bibliography and an Index. The first chapter; the Introduction, is made up of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She goes on to mention that the translations that are from Spanish to English founded in this book are nobody's but hers. And she is focusing on the areas of Madrid and Castilla. She had to restrict to it these two areas because in her own words, "... In part because the tonadilla is a particularly madrilenan theatrical form, and in part because my research has for years focused on the eighteenth–century capital. (43)" Moving on to the second chapter of Haidt's book. The second chapter of this book is, Petimetria, women's work and the economics of desire. She opens up this chapter, with that this man, Pedro Rodriquez, Conde de Campomanes in 1775 told them, well reminded them, the Madrid Economic Soceity that women in nicer terms belong in the sphear of home and not that laws have very little influence with concern by the inerna, government inside household of families. While; it goes to mention that the Spanish government of the time was clueless about the reality of what was going on with the poor and working middle class of women in Spanish society during this time, that they were doing labor and were stuggling to earn money for the fact that their family could survive. • 3. TV: Where Men Work And Women Clean The idea of what a women's responsibilities around the house are have evolved tremendously in the past 60 years. In this modern era, women are no longer expected to spend their time at home cooking or taking care of their children. It is amazing to see how much society has changed since. However, cleaning somehow has been where the line was drawn. Multiple studies show that women do most of the housekeeping around the home in modern day despite the other changes happening toward equality. In Sorata Chemaly's "TV: Where Men Work and Women Clean," the author successfully conveyed to the audience through an effective appeal to logos, and pathos that the media has distorted the idea of the way a woman's life in relation to working and staying home. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although, they all may seem harmless and perhaps even entertaining, there are aspects of them that consumers do not always notice. She points out the obvious gap between men and women who work in TV shows. The imbalance shapes the idea of what adult women and men's job are which often feeds to stereotypical ideologies. Instead of promoting young girls to have ambition, the media is teaching them that men are the ones who work and have successful occupations while women are unemployed or struggling. Of course, all these commercials, films, and TV shows who could be potentially harming children by subconsciously advocating sexist views are made by men. The author then gives five suggestions of how the media could potentially deal with the "imbalance in the portrayal of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The 's Work Displayed How Women Friedan's work displayed how women were regressing back into the role of homemaker, which was their most valued role under the influence of the mystique. The McCarthyite period caused much unrest in America because of the creation of the ideology of gender roles. Freidan argues: "The public image, in the magazines and television commercials, is designed to sell washing machines, cake mixes...but the power of that image...comes from this: American women no longer know who they are. They are sorely in need of a new image to help them find their identity" (Friedan, 1992, c1963: 63–64). This is a quandary Esther faces which is empathised through Esther's boyfriend 's mother Mrs Willard, who believes "'what a man is is an arrow into the future ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This metaphor of the fig tree presents how Esther is given many opportunities in her life but it seems that society will not let her fulfil them all. Plath here relates Esther's anxieties over her future to more general problems with gender roles. Janet Badia contends: "Esther's frustration is not unreasonable given the societal constrictions regarding women's roles in mid–century America...the problem lies in her desire to have what society tells her is impossible... Esther is told again and again that her choices, while hers to make, will have repercussions she cannot control"(Badia, 2008: 133). She does not like how men get the choice to pick a family and a career. Especially when Buddy views her as "'Crazy" and "neurotic. [She] could never settle down in either the country or the city.'" (89) Buddy makes us assume that the only sane choice for women is to become a wife, even though Esther questions this value system her fear of inadequacy makes her see the branches in a negative light. She finds these stereotypical genders roles very unattractive and does not believe men should be able to dictate a women's life. Thus, she is resisting against these gender roles that are placed on her by the society especially as Plath was writing at the time of second wave feminism, which was trying to reassert these roles but by resisting she is showing how ... • 5. Women Should Not Work Too Hard Throughout history women have been taught that in many ways they are the lesser gender, and they have always been held to certain societal standards, however, women in today's society are beginning to challenge these standards through their musical careers. In the 19th century, women were believed to be the weaker gender due to biological basis. They visually appeared much smaller thus alluding to the idea that they have less physical stamina than men. This ideology has furthered the beliefs of women all throughout history up until now. Women are expected to be able to complete less work than men, and they are not seen as able to withstand harder physical work. With this, it has been seen as acceptable all throughout society to pay women less than men considering they could not do the same amount of work. Additionally, women are thought to be very sickly and weak during their "time of the month". Society also has valued the reproductive system on women immensely. The idea that women should not work too hard due to the possibility of becoming infertile was ingrained in society thus furthering the idea that women should not be held to the same standards as men. Additionally in the 19th century, the idea of womanhood developed. Women were expected to go to church and teach their children about the Bible, and they were expected to stay pure until they were married off. They also had certain standards of how they should look and act. They were expected to dress modestly, be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Afghanistan Women Work My charity's name is Afghanistan Women Employment Agency. We are working toward giving women in Afghan jobs. Many Women in Afghan struggle with getting jobs because they don't all have a good education or they never went to school. The website trustineducation said, "Only 40% of Afghan girls attend elementary school, and only one in 20 girls attend school beyond the sixth grade." Hearing this made me feel angry on the inside because education is the most important thing to have in your life. Even though education was a huge factor in life the women that were well educated didn't always get a job. When women are married in Afghan they are married young. Budd MacKenzie said on his website "Almost 60% of girls are married by 16. Women activists say up to 80 percent of marriages in poor rural areas are either forced or arranged." Putting this sentence and my knowledge on Afghanistan together made me think why women were not employed. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also being married at sixteen means they were only in 10th grade at the time if they had gotten any education. Based off of the religion in Afghanistan which is Islam, women are given many rights. The students of Mount Holyoke College had came together and said, "Islam gives women rights, including rights to work, the ability to choose the man she will marry, among others. However, in Afghanistan, many times women have not been given these specific rights." They had also said that it was almost 15 hundred years back when this had happened. When Afghanistan was not independent women were given some rights about marriage like, they didn't have to marry the husband's closest relative if the husband had ever died. • 7. Women in the Work Force Essay Women in the Work Force Working in a factory which is similar to living in a third world country is difficult. Horrible, intolerable conditions haunt workers at home and in the working environment. Women lead tough lives because they are dictated orders, by men, in and out of the house. Many women have families to support, so making little salaries is a strain on the family. The main issue with conditions in the work force is that management does not have a clear understanding of what the women and the children working are going through. Working conditions in third world countries are similar to some working conditions in America. In third world countries, a woman in the family has expected roles as a wife and a mother. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Louie, "Like the 19th–centruy sweatshop middle–men, many of today's subcontractors survive the competition by "sweating" their workers out of wage, hour, benefits, and safety rights" (4). It was hard for women to go home to a similar environment; one that they had faced all day at work. In third world countries, at work there are expectations to be followed from women. According to Stromquist, "Another mechanism of social control is the use of sexual stereotypes regarding women's abilities and skills" (5). Since women are seen as being weak and feminine, their bosses who were men, thought they could only handle doing jobs that would be too easy for men to do. Women get confused about how they should act at work because women receive conflicting messages about how to perform their jobs. This happens when there are many bosses on duty and all of them want to do things their way. There are conflicting messages because when one boss walks by and the women are yelled at to do a job a certain way and when another boss walks by the women are yelled at to do the same job a different way than before. There are different tasks that women must do on duty. For example, Mrs. Yu Sau Kwan received injuries from activities while on the job. At her job in Chinatown she would get pains in her back, hip, and fingers from sewing nine– hundred zippers a day. For this she could have received Workers Compensation, but no one ... • 8. Working With Women In Social Work Essay should take into consideration when working with women because this could potentially change my client's willingness to be open about what is going on, rather than being guarded and closed off if I were to disregard all stressors women usually deal with. Women have a different vulnerability to the negative mental health effects of trauma and many studies portray that women have higher rates of PTSD, anxiety and depression after large–scale disaster or terror events, than men who have also been similarly exposed (Raphael, Taylor, and McAndrew 2008). This is something an expert would tell me to definitely take notice of because this could help me possibly diagnose some form of a mental health disorder in one of my own clients and I could then ... In order to respond to the situations of clients in poverty appropriately, the social worker must use a poverty aware approach, meaning they should try to be aware of what the client or family they are working with is currently going through (Davis, 2005). By being knowledgeable about my client's situation, I will have an easier time trying to get my client to feel comfortable with me so I can fully understand what they are going through. Understanding the poverty aware approach calls for a basic understanding of the theories of poverty and income inequality (Davis, 2005). Also, it is important to have an awareness of the economic, social and cultural factors sustaining poverty, as well as the social, physical and emotional impact of poverty (Davis, ... • 9. Familly-Work Conflicts with Women Are females seen as having family–work conflicts at Hydrogen Group than their male co–workers? Introduction Based on a recent report from the ILO (International Labour Organisation), more females are engaged in work today than ever in the past. Despite a significant improvement in the involvement of females in the labour force with equal experience and qualification level as males, female workers still face the glass ceiling and a number of challenges in career development (McGraw 2011). Family responsibilities, career interruptions and gender relatated differences in work experiences have attemped to justify the lower levels of female career progression (Hakim, 2002). Female workers still find that they are differentially treated in terms of career development than their male co–workers (Lyons and Smith 2008) moreover, they still being discriminated in workplace (Bell et al.2002). Metz (2009) critisises the common perception that educated and expereinced women cannot fully contribute to their organisations because their main focus is the family care responsibilities. The gaps in exsisting literature encourage to produce this research proposal. Although mentioned issues continue to be important factors preventing women from success in their careers, this study shows the urgency for continous researching that would draw a greater image of career progression of females in a small size organisation. The Work Of The Heart : Young Women And Emotion Martha Tomhave Blauvelt, in her book The Work of the Heart: Young Women and Emotion, 1780– 1830, proclaims that "we need more useful conceptual tools to understand history as men and women actually experienced it."i Indeed, Blauvelt 's book is an attempt to forge these tools through a meticulous examination of the diaries of young women in America at the turn of the nineteenth century in the hopes of understanding how these women constructed and expressed their emotions. She employs the work of two sociologists as the theoretical apparatuses of the book: first, Arlie Russell Hochschild 's idea of emotion as work, something which requires an active effort to adhere to the rules dictating how one is supposed to feel in a given situation.ii ... The organization of the book explores this private rehearsal and public performance in different realms of young women 's lives: Chapter 1 is on social class; Chapter 2, education in a private boarding school; Chapter 3, courtship; Chapter 4, anger; Chapter 5, the reconstruction of emotion in marriage and religion. Note that at no point in the book does Blauvelt give an explicit biographical sketch of any of her women, but rather only elucidates the lives of her subjects within specific contexts. As such, Blauvelt refers to Elizabeth Cranch 's erstwhile fiance early in the book, and only names him and his eventual death much later; similarly, Abigail May 's early death is not mentioned until halfway through the book!vi These problems are not problems with Blauvelt 's scholarship, but rather with the sources themselves: diaries are performances of a different kind, and "ego– documents" demonstrate an image of others far more than the diarist. In the first three chapters, there is an explicit tension between what women wrote in their diaries and how they actually interacted with society writ large. • 12. Women 's Work Setting Environment Women around the world have not been treated equally in a work setting environment. In some places women aren 't even allowed to work, but in our nation the United States of America this is not our scenario. The scenario in the United States of America is that women are allowed to work, but unfortunately women are not being treated the same manner in which a man is treated in a work setting. Women go through a lot of obstacles in a workplace, this should not be happening at this time in date. We as a society tend to say we have grown and prosper and that this is the land of opportunity, but how can such a statement be said if women are not given the same opportunity as men are. In a work setting women tend to be paid much less the man is paid for doing the same exact job. Then because women are paid less its affects them in their daily life. Women also face the difficulties of not being promoted as often as men are in a work setting. After facing such difficulties in a work setting they still have issues of sexual harassment to deal with. Then, if women choose to become pregnant, they have another difficulty to face. Overall the worst obstacle and what I feel is the one that starts all of this is the challenge of women being hired for a job. The only reason why women are not treated the same is a simple observation if a person is male or female makes all the difference in a work setting. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Not only does it give women something to do, it also ensures stability in one's family income. Here are a few statistics that demonstrate the challenge of balancing paid employment and domestic labor within the family setting in Canada. This challenge arises because of the inequalities between what men and women earn in the work force and also because of the uneven distribution of chores in unpaid domestic labor. If we compare salaries in 1997, men had the higher income of the couple in 77% of Canadian families. (Globe and Mail 21 Feb. 2000). This situation has however improved since the early 60's when 70% of women in male–female couples were dependent on their spouse as the sole income provider. (Oderkirk, Silver and Prud'homme 1994.) Also when couples divorced men's incomes raised on average 10% whereas women's income usually decreased by 23% in 1997(Toronto Star 10 April 1997). From the conflicts that aroused between the different White European settlers, to the adjustment of the African Americans to labor, the southerner society, or community, was created. As per Reskin & Padavic, three kinds of aspects form gender inequality, they are– social construction of the gender, sexual labor division, and depreciation in women's job (Cech, 2012). Mothers at perspective There are many popular beliefs with respect to the work and family issues that characterize working mothers as they have divided concentration between work and home, they are considered as less committed and less competent, and hence they are treated less worthy as employees. The stereotype thinking for working mothers has looked at mothers as just secondary earners who have their main earning husbands for the household. However, the fact is that 10 million houses are run by single moms, and just 6 million households are run by a husband with her non working spouse. In the present time debates of gender inequality at workplaces and pay differences, majority of the assumptions state that due to child responsibilities, the effort, motivation, and commitment of the working mothers have to suffer. And, it is also observed in many arguments that mothers can't stand to the current expectation of what an ideal worker has to adhere to, as she in spite of committing herself to work, faces distractions from home (Cech, 2012). • 29. Role of Women in Maupassant's Works Guy de Maupassant is one of the most popular French short story writers from the 19th Century and was also considered to be the father of modern short story writings. Maupassant belonged to the naturalistic school and took issues like the attitudes of the bourgeoisie or the Franco–Prussian War, along with the highly fashionable life of France in his age, and these became the key aspects of the cynical style of writing. Taking some of the aspects of his life in relation to his works, it is stated that he normally didn't like work and whenever he found free time, for which he actually searched for, he used to spend it in pursuit of women, which can probably relate to how he expresses hypocrisy in women's characters and have a better ... Keeping the above statement in mind, it can be said that the entire truth of the woman in concern and the truth of their relationship was a lie. And this is affective for the woman because the man showed the chivalry and honestly loved her. He had faith in her that's why he was ‘ignorant' and did not try to judge her actions, in the end, she herself (in the dreams or not) came out and revealed herself to him. So initially what was written was removed and the epitaph said: "Having gone out in the rain one day, in order to deceive her lover, she caught cold and died." The woman is deceptive and in turn highlights the man in a positive light indicating how he is honest and chivalric. Keeping the same notion in mind, another story about a woman deceiving her husband is the "False Gems" which revolves around the woman's interests in operas and jewels. The element of pretence runs throughout the short story; the fact that the woman who appears pious and virtuous (as the woman ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Victorian Women in the Work Force Essay Victorian Women in the Work Force The Victorian period is often defined by its antique images of flowers, doilies, rosy–cheek children and intricate fashion. However, these trite images shadow the true realities of middle–class families struggling to succeed in the emerging business world. Traditionally, the men spent long days in the city working out business affairs, while the women stayed home with the children preparing meals and planning for social gatherings. Work was often not an option for women because they were seen as incapable of any duty outside of the home. She was capable of handling governmental affairs while also showing herself to be obedient to Prince Albert, her beloved husband, which became an admirable trait among the English wives of this period (20). Likewise, many historians refer to the Queen as a paradox because she combined her middle–class roots with her aristocratic reign. As one author says, "That the queen of England became the central embodiment of middle–class familial values held great significance for the representation and role of bourgeois women" (Langland 64). Queen Victoria's concern for the middle–class served as a basis by which English women were able to go outside of their domestic realm and break some of the existing stereotypes. Stereotypes of Victorian Women The stereotypes of this period classified the ideal Victorian woman as being family oriented and subservient to their male counterparts. She was supposed to "love children and also to avoid hurtful blunt statements" and "make her husband the center of her life and be the Light of the Home while her husband tangled with the world at large" (Palmer). Marriage was supposed to be the Victorian woman's highest aim so that she could fulfill her aspiration of creating a family (Dunhill 23).
