Deemple Morar evaluated their school magazine media product. They constructed a front cover and contents page using Photoshop and a digital camera. Their strengths included following magazine conventions, but weaknesses included spelling errors and difficulties cutting out images. They were familiar with Photoshop and the digital camera from prior experience, but struggled at times with specific Photoshop functions. Overall, they aimed to learn from mistakes to improve their media production skills.
4. In what ways does
your media product
use, develop or
challenge forms and
conventions of real
media products?
5. Positioning Statement: this is
used to give a better in sight to
what the magazine could be
about, which could help sell it on
the market.
Masthead: the masthead
is the largest piece of
writing on the front cover
of a magazine. It consists
of a unique or san serif
font however, I have not
included this on my
school magazine. I have
centred my masthead so
it goes across the whole
of my page, as I wanted it
to be noticeable to allow
the audience to view it.
Main image: the main image is
the largest image that will be
used on a magazine. It is usually
centred in the middle and takes
up the majority of the page. I
must ensure I do not put any
piece writing other than the
main cover line across the
image, as this does not fit the
codes and conventions.
Main Cover Line: the main
cover line is the second largest
piece of writing on the front
cover of a magazine. It
illustrates the main story of
what the article is about and is
the only piece of writing that
can go across the main image.
Buzzwords: I have included
buzzwords to entice the reader,
which could allow them to think
they are getting something
extra with the magazine.
Cover Lines: the cover
lines feature around the
main image. I have not
included too many cover
lines as I did not want the
audience to be too
attracted to these areas.
This is because the main
cover line is the main
feature story.
Extra Features: I have
ensured I included a
barcode, price, web address
and issue number, as these
are important features of a
magazine. However, I have
put the barcode on the left
hand side of the magazine
where as this needed to be
on the right hand side. I must
ensure when I do my main
task that I do not make this
mistake again.
Colour Scheme: I have used 2-3 colours on my
magazine, which I ensured they do not clash.
This fits the codes and conventions.
FRONT COVER
6. CONTENTS PAGE
Main Headline: (Masthead)
the regular ‘contents’ is
found a the top of the page,
as this allows the audience
to be aware that this is a
contents page. I have also
included ‘WW’ which stands
for ‘Weatherhead Weekly’,
which is the name of my
magazine.
Images: the images I
have included, have
reference to my articles
that I have illustrated
on my headlines and
sub lines.
Headlines/Sub lines:
I have used the
correct page
numbers next to the
article however, I
have not given any
further information
about what the article
could be about. I am
aware that on some
contents pages they
do not give any
insight to what the
article could be
about.
Typography:
I have used the same font
and sizing on my contents
page to ensure that each
part of my contents page is
equal and consistent.
However, I have made three
spelling mistakes on the
‘editors letter', so to ensure I
do not make this mistake
again, I must read my work
over before finalizing
anything.
Colour Scheme: I have continued with the
same colour scheme throughout, as I didn’t
want the colours to clash.
7. How did you use
new media
technologies in
the construction
of your media
product?
8. PHOTOSHOP
Throughout the duration of this
course, I have used new media
technologies by using Photoshop.
Photoshop is the software I used
to edit my image and to make my
front cover of my magazine and
contents page. I have previously
used Photoshop for GCSE Media,
so I have some grasp of how to
use it. However, my main image
was difficult to cut out, so in some
places it had harsh edges.
9. DIGITAL CAMERA
I used a digital camera throughout
the duration of this course, which
allowed me to take pictures for my
school magazine around the school.
This also allowed me to take good
quality pictures and I was fully
aware of how to use the camera.
10. What are the
strengths and
weaknesses of both
the product and your
use of new media
technologies?
11. Personally, I think my strengths of my media product contain and
follow the codes and conventions of a magazine front cover and
contents page. I ensured I included most codes and conventions,
however I did make some mistakes. I was able to upload pictures
onto Photoshop and edit them. This wasn’t too difficult as I had
previously used Photoshop at GCSE. My weaknesses towards my
media product would to be to read over my work, as Photoshop does
not come up with auto correct/ doesn’t identify when a spelling
mistake has been made. I also struggled with cutting out my main
image. To ensure I do not make these mistakes again, I must ensure
I follow everything correctly and be more careful.
The strengths with new media technologies is that I used a digital
camera which I found very easy to use, as I had previously used one
before. This enabled me to take pictures for my school magazine
front cover and contents page. I was also familiar with Photoshop, as
I had previously used this software before, however I did ask for
some help for certain areas that I struggled with. Personally, I do not
think I had any weaknesses with new media technologies as I found
each software easy to use as I was familiar with it. However, I did
find cutting out the image difficult.
