Limitations Of Naturalistic Observation
Naturalistic observation involves making observations of everyday events and recording those
observations in an objective manner (Stangor, 2016, p.39). Participants of a naturalistic observation
are observed in natural surroundings. The goal of naturalistic observation is to create a "snapshot" of
the current state of affairs. One advantage to naturalistic observation is that it provides a way to
collect data about the topic of interest (Stangor, 2016, p.40). Naturalistic observation is said to have
ecological validity. Ecological validity refers to the extent to which the research is conducted in
situations that are similar to everyday life experiences of the participants (Stangor, 2016, p.40). This
research design also allows the researcher to observe group behaviors in a specific setting. Despite
its advantages naturalistic observation also has some limitations. This design does not assess
relationships among variables (Stangor, 2016, p.39). Meaning that a cause and effect relationship
cannot be created. The results of this observation are generally limited to the group being studied.
More importantly, naturalistic observation cannot be used to test research hypotheses about which
types of group behavior are related to or caused by which other variables (Stangor, 2016, p.41).

Similarities Between College And University
The terms college and university originally had very similar meanings. Only with the passing of
centuries did university come to signify an educational institution composed of more than one
college. The word college means literally "union formed by law," or a group of people associated in
some common function. The ancient Roman craft guilds were called collegia. The closest parallel
today is the corporation, a business organization chartered by a government.
 During the Middle Ages students at the universities of Paris, Oxford, and Cambridge found it
convenient to rent houses and share expenses instead of living in private apartments. By the 13th
century these "houses of scholars" were becoming legally recognized corporate institutions. ... Show

When used in its modern sense as a place for advanced learning, it usually required the addition of
other words such as "masters and scholars." The term that was normally used to describe a legally
chartered school of teachers and students was studium generale, meaning a place of study open to
students from all parts. The universitas was a group of teachers or students (or perhaps both) within
the studium. A studium was quite similar to a guild in both origin and composition. The beginners
were essentially apprentices, called bachelors, while the teachers were the masters.
 The studium probably emerged when the bishop of a diocese gave a teacher permission to operate
a school other than the local cathedral or monastery school. It is likely that a license to teach was
granted to a master after a formal examination. The studium itself became a school that granted a
teaching license to its scholars after they completed a prescribed course of study and passed

Oxford University Importance
Oxford University is one of the oldest Universities in existence. It is located in Oxford England
about 50 miles northwest of London and is the oldest University in England. Oxford University is
important because it is vital to not just people in England, but to the whole world at large. It has
been first and foremost in setting standards for teaching and learning. Oxford has been known for
exceptional communication skills which were needed in trade between countries and smaller entities
for universal progress among people. What can I say then, Oxford University helped lead the way to
progressiveness internationally and continuing to stand tall amongst the greatest and the best known
of its kind. Oxford is a university to be reckoned with .
The early school of Oxford was a gill, an organization of tradesmen whose chief purpose was to
control teaching by limiting the number of teachers. There are some indicators concerning the origin
of the institution. From all indications the masters elected one of their member as head officer and
gave him the title of chancellor. The head of the university bears this title. The students organized
themselves into groups much like modern college fraternities. Nevertheless there is a record of
lectures from other european countries at oxford as early as 1117. Between 1167 and 1168 foreign
students were expelled from the University of Paris after relations between england and paris broke
off . Consequently, many students from

The Problem Of Pain Cs Lewis Analysis
The Reasoning Behind Pain and C.S. Lewis
Clive Staples Lewis was born on November 29, 1898 in Belfast, Northern Ireland to Albert J. Lewis
and Florence Augusta Hamilton Lewis. He had an older brother, Warren, and the two were very
close. When he was three years old, he announced that his name was "Jack", and he was called Jack
by family and friends for the rest of his life. His early life was very happy. His parents were avid
readers and the home was filled with books. Lewis was raised as a Protestant and was taken to
church services each Sunday.
In August, 1908, Lewis' mother died from abdominal cancer when he was nine years of age. His
happy and stable childhood was shattered. He was sent off to various boarding schools, including ...

"If the universe is so bad, or even half so bad, how on earth did human beings ever come to attribute
it to the activity of a wise and good Creator?" (Lewis, C.S. The Problem of Pain, p. 3.) Prehistoric
man first wrote of fear of a supernatural being, and Lewis describes a feeling of awe and fear which
he calls Numinous. He describes man's consciousness of morality, and the inherent feeling of
knowing right from wrong. God is all powerful and good, yet the world is full of evil, tragedy, loss
and suffering. Lewis argues that life cannot exist independent of the natural world and because we
have the freedom to make choices, human suffering is inevitable. "We have seen that in a stable and
meaningful universe a possibility of pain is inherent; and in a universe of creatures, inclined, by
virtue of their fallen nature, to move away from God, evil becomes, so to speak, endemic." (Bacz,
Jacek.) God is full of love and goodness. Man, however, is not perfect, we make mistakes, we make
bad choices, we can be wicked and evil resulting in great suffering to ourselves and others. The pain
we experience is the mechanism to bring us closer to God, and to become blessed and

Oxfords Dictionary Defines Lobbing As “A Group Of People
Oxfords Dictionary defines lobbing as "a group of people seeking to influence legislators on a
particular issue." (needs in text citations)The term lobbing has been around our politics since the
creation of the nation. The right to petition the government is based off of the first amendment, in
which the people have a right to peaceably assemble and petition the government for grievances.

One of the reasons for nurse burnout is inadequate staffing. Inadequate nurse staffing effects many
individuals. Most importantly, patients, nurses as well as hospital administrators. According to
Department of Professional Employee [DPE], (2016), staffing issues affect nurses as it leads to
nurse burnouts and affects nurse's health, increasing their risks for hypertension, cardiovascular
disease and depression. Understaffing also leads to expensive human resources problems that can
affect hospital administrator's budgets. The harsh demands of nursing are forcing nurses to consider
alternative careers. Studies have shown the overall turnover cost per registered nurse is $65,000
(DPE, 2016). One solution proposed by NYSNA is the Safe Staffing for Quality Care Act, it
proposes to "require acute care facilities and nursing homes to implement certain direct–care nurse
to patient ratios in all nursing units; sets minimum staffing requirements; requires every such facility
to submit a documented staffing plan to the department on an annual basis and upon application for
an operating certificate; authorizes nurses to refuse work assignments if the assignment exceeds the
nurses abilities or if the minimum staffing is not present."(bill A6571) This bill was passed by the

Blood Done Sign My Name Analysis

Tyson, Timothy B. Blood Done Sign My Name. New York: Broadway Books, 2004.
Timothy B. Tyson, born 1959, had a unique childhood as the son of a Methodist minister who
supported the civil rights movement. He accepted his parents' liberal attitude, and struggled to
reconcile it with the society around him – that of white supremacy and black oppression. Later, he
attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Emory University for his BA, and
returned to Duke University to earn his PhD in history. He began his teaching career with US
History while attending Duke, then switched to Afro–American Studies in 1994. Based on Tyson's
parenting and field of study, it can be expected to be a solid narrative that, while containing signs of
white privilege, gives insight into how people can rise from oppression.
Blood Done Sign My Name revolves around the murder of Henry Marrow in the small town of
Oxford, North Carolina in May 1970 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Here's a comparison with the ideas of two online reviewers. In "Blood Done Sign My Name: Echoes
of the South's troubled past," critic MiChelle Jones is positive towards the book and focuses on
Tyson's charming style, innate historic value, and unique perspective as he chose the familiar story
of racism and set it in a time that was more preoccupied with other news, ending with an assertion
that it's a commentary to the country's recent past. In a Kirkus Review post, the review spends time
establishing Tyson's role in the story and in the story's events, wrapping up with praise and saying
that the book is a reminder of civil rights being a struggle on both sides. Both online reviews give
Tyson more limelight as part of a central idea in the book. They don't touch on details of how
Marrow's trial changed the movement in Oxford, but they do agree that the book is a powerful
revival of the struggling and violent truth that came with civil

Contributions Of William Golding
William Golding was a famous British author, poet, and playwright. Golding contributed to British
Literature by writing several works for which he was acknowledged. His most famous work is a
novel called Lord of the Flies which was published in 1954. Lord of the Flies is still being read
today around the world. In addition, two movie versions based on the novel were released. The first
version was released in the United States in 1963 and the second version was released in 1990. The
Lord of the Flies remains a relevant piece of literature today as it shows what happens in nature
when there is no central governing body. His pessimism about the nature of humanity was obviously
reflected in his writing. William Golding's childhood, school life, and war experience heavily
influenced his work as a playwright, poet, and an author of Lord of the Flies.
On September 19, 1911 William Golding was born at his maternal grandmother's house in Newquay,
Cornwall (England). This was approximately six years after his older brother Joseph was born.
Golding also had an adopted sister named Eileen. She was his blood cousin and was adopted in the
1930s. His parents were Alec and Mildred A. Golding (neé Curnoe). The whole family lived in
Marlborough, Wiltshire. Alec was a master of science at Marlborough Grammar School. Alec was
also a rationalist, religious skeptic, and an activist for the British Labour Party. Alec and Mildred

Lewis Carroll 's ' Wonderland '
Unbeknown to many, Alice in Wonderland borrows a lot from the reality of its author. As a matter of
fact, Alice in Wonderland has as much to do with its author as it has to do with creativity. Lewis
Carroll's beliefs are written all over the story as one navigates through the alternate reality he
presents in the novel. Before exploring the evidence of Lewis Carroll's spiritual beliefs in Alice, it is
important to understand what actually constitutes Lewis Carroll's beliefs. Notably, other than being
an author, Lewis was an Anglican clergyman, a mathematician and a talented formal logician. Other
than studying at Christ Church Oxford, he went ahead to lecture at the same institution (Auerbach,
1973). Indeed, this brief history presents an individual whose life is deeply founded in religion.
Conventionally, religion is founded on three fundamental principles, that is, the existence of an
alternate reality, belief in supernatural force, and of course, the conquest of good over evil. These
form the foundations of religion and are indeed, the very tenets upon which Alice in Wonderland is
founded. As a matter of fact, in his book "The Gospel in Disney," Longfellow (1993) asserts that
Christian lessons are learned from Alice in Wonderland.
In Alice in Wonderland, Lewis presents and entirely alternate reality. Alice finds herself in a world
other than the one in which she lives. At the very start of the story, Alice finds herself in distress.
From this set up, Lewis akin to his

The Other Wes Moore Outlier Analysis
In an interview, Malcolm Gladwell once said, "Outliers makes us understand how much of a group
project success is. When outliers become outliers, it is not just because of their own efforts. It's
because of the contributions of lots of different people and lots of different circumstances." Wes
Moore is one of the many great examples of a Gladwellian "outlier," as evinced by his upbringing,
extraordinary success, and the rare opportunities he received. From growing up in a broken
neighborhood to almost dropping out of school, it seemed as if the author of The Other Wes Moore
would follow the same dark path as his criminal counterpart with the same name... but he did not.

His extraordinary successes and achievements place him in a category many can only aspire to be –
an outlier of society.
One's childhood has a lasting impact on their entire life. Moore's upbringing and the loving family
he was born into, no matter how trivial it may seem, greatly contributed to his success. Wes
seemingly grew up the same as any other kid in the Bronx – in a single–parent household,
surrounded by bad influences... what separated him from the crowd? His support system: his family,
and their ultimate support and sacrifices made all the difference. As a teenager, Wes seemed to be
going down the wrong path. He constantly skipped school, his academic failures were
overwhelming, and he was even arrested for vandalism. In the case of the other Wes, his family
simply let these actions slide, and decision after decision ultimately landed him with a life sentence
in prison. The author Wes's mother, however, refused to allow this behavior to continue. As a
method of intervention, she forced Moore to attend Valley Forge, and in doing so, probably saved
his career. The extent of his family's sacrifice was evident on page 95 when Wes realized that "my
grandparents took the money they had in the home in the Bronx, decades of savings and mortgage
payments, and gave it to my mother

The History of Cambridge University
The beautiful city of Cambridge has an enviable reputation as one of the world's greatest universities
as well as being an agreeable place to live and work. The inhabitants enjoy low unemployment, a
cluster of good schools and plenty of green spacious parkland. The river Cam provides a focal point
in the summer with its flotilla of punts gliding around gentle bends overhung with lush willows. It is
a city of two vibrant communities, that despite a chequered past of friction and confrontation now
seem to co–exist with ease. Both the students and locals go about their business, almost independent
of each other. Many scholars are completely unaware of the delights the city has to offer away from
the seclusion of their learned places and locals would be hard pressed to tell you where any
university building was apart from King's College Chapel and maybe the University Library, with its
huge soaring tower. Most central colleges face inward to courtyards hidden behind castle–like
buildings, giving no clue to the enclosed delights (that can include a lake with huge fish). Secret and
enchanting places only accessed by gatehouses guarded by porters – keepers of the portcullis.
Within the city boundaries are a dense collection of architectural styles ranging from medieval,
Jacobean, classical and Victorian. This city is an architectural historians paradise where examples of
one style evolving into another are abundant. The relationship between the colleges and the

What Are the Advantages & Disadvantages of Working in...
"A team is a group of individuals who work together to produce products or deliver services for
which they are mutually accountable."
(Cohen & Mohrman, 1995)
Teamwork is used everyday, everywhere in business organisations. It is an important way of
bringing people together, developing stronger bonds between members and quickly tackling large
projects. There have been many theorists who have developed conflicting theories regarding the
pros and cons of working in teams, thus the ageing problem in hand is firstly being able to identify
these advantages and disadvantages, and secondly trying to find solutions to reducing or avoiding
these disadvantages. The ability to do this is of paramount importance for leaders everywhere ...

Allport argued that the key to resolving conflict was better interaction between members. The
foundation of this argument is that interaction consolidates a feeling of group identity resulting in
stronger bonds between group members and encourages friendships. In this way, if we examine
Allport's theory with reference to Guirdham's, we could see that team members might be less likely
to abuse group norms. However, one problem that could arise as a follow on from encouraging team
members to become friendly with one another is the idea of groupthink, which I shall discuss
shortly.
The second advantage I am going to discuss is that group members all motivate one another. In
order to provide evidence for this statement it is necessary to re–examine one of the theories
mentioned earlier; Group norms (Guirdham, 1995). Guirdham suggests that every team member is
encouraged to adopt these four norms which encourages stronger bonds between the team members
and can convert simple group members into friends. This therefore leads to an environment in which
everybody gets along. However, it could be argued that there are two major consequences and
disadvantages that may arise through this type of approach. I already touched upon the first one;
somebody in the group may abuse the group norms and morale may be lowered. The second is the
idea of groupthink (Janis, 1972). Groupthink is the idea that in an environment where people are too
friendly, they do

Emotional Intelligence and Nursing
"Emotional Intelligences and Reflective Practice are Integral Components of Building a Therapeutic
Relationship in Nursing" Emotional intelligence refers to an ability to recognize the meanings of
emotion and its therapeutic relationships, and to reasons for problem–solving in nursing. This is
involved in the capacity to recognize emotions, adapt emotion–related to feelings, understand the
information of those emotions, and manage it. Reflective practice is a process by which one stops
and think about their practice, knowingly analyse ones decision making and clarifying ones thoughts
and doubts. As a result, one may modify ones actions, behaviour, treatments and learning needs.

Changing the interpretations in one's mind allows someone to change emotions. Self–awareness is
one of the characteristics of Emotional Intelligence and a vital factor in achieving success in
nursing. Self–awareness is the first step in creating what clients want and how to dominant critical
situations so that nurses can focus on client's care, emotions, responses, nature and behaviour.
Having self–awareness allows nurses to see where client's thoughts and emotions leads to. It also
allows nurses to see and control emotions, behaviour, and personality so that nurses can changes
clients' thinking. For example if a client knows that he or she is sexually active one should use
contraceptive methods to avoid teenage pregnancy and STIs. Effective nursing practice is in need of

the qualities and capacities of an effective therapeutic relationship, the state of knowledge, and the
information needed to be effective. To implement a therapeutic relationship effectively, hospitals
characteristics must be supportive. The therapeutic relationship is also known as the helping alliance

How Oxford Has Coped with the Demands of Modern-Day Tourism
We shall see in this essay how a city has coped with the many demands of modern–day tourism and
maintained its position as a Mecca for millions of travelers. "Today's travel and tourism industry has
grown into a global economic powerhouse whose combined direct and indirect impact on the world
economy is enormous, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).". ( Fuller,2014)
Fodor's travel guide says Oxford has perhaps "the most famous university in the world". Since
Oxford University can traces it routes back to 1167 the city has been attracting people from across
the globe for centuries. The history of the city, largely forged by the university, has led to the need
for other inter–related services notably in accommodation, transportation, travel organisations and
the development of other destinations. Both public and private sectors have responded to the
challenge.
In the City of Oxford there are many examples of hospitality and tourism, as seen by the constant
stream of visitors who crowd its streets at weekends throughout the year, striving to get the best
view of the historic number of colleges protruding onto every street. This is Oxford's prize
possession that sets it apart from other destinations in the UK and the world. However there are sub
sectors that play a big part in Oxford. One of the largest examples is the popularity and growth of
the accommodation sector, more specifically hotels. This essay will evaluate the Randolph Hotel in

First, river is playing a very important role of public space in this story. Geographically, the river in
the story is linking both Oxford and London. The River Cherwell is a major tributary of the River
Thames in central England. It rises from Northampton, England to Oxford, England. Then, The
River Cherwell merge with The Isis which is from Oxford, England to London, England. When The
Isis arrive London's territory, it is called River Thames. River first appears as a metaphor while
Harriet is shrugging weather she should go back to Oxford despite the heated discussion of her
rumor with Peter Wimsey. "But she doubted whether she were now capable of any such withdrawal.
She had long ago taken the step that put the grey–walled paradise of Oxford behind her. No one can
bathe in the same river twice, not even in the Isis." (Sayers 19) This is a reference to Heraclitus, a
Greek philosopher meaning that you cannot step into the same river twice because you are changing
and the river is changing. This is also an indication of the transformation of both characters and
place. The transformation of river as Heraclitus suggests is also a symbol of changes in ideology.

Essay On Alcoholics Anonymous
Alcoholics Anonymous an Open Meeting Dominique Steinburg describes mutual aid as a process
through which people develop collaborative, supportive, and trustworthy relationships; identify and
use existing strengths and/or to develop new ones; and work together toward individual and/or
collective psychosocial goals. (Steinburg, 2010) Alcoholics Anonymous is mutual aid group that
supports individuals in their recovery from alcohol dependence. Established in the mid 1930's,
Alcoholics Anonymous was borne from the principals of self–improvement and mutual aid practiced
by the Oxford Group. The Oxford Group was a popular religious movement in the United States and
Europe at that time. (AA) When Rowland H., a prominent Rhode Island businessman and Yale
graduate, relapsed into his alcoholism, the renowned psychoanalyst Carl Jung, refused to provide
any further treatment citing that Rowland had reached the end of what psychology and medical
science had to offer him. Carl Jung recommended that Rowland H. seek spiritual guidance and
referred him to the Oxford Group. (Blum, 2006) After experiencing nothing short of a miraculous
recovery, Rowland H., decided to act upon one of the principals took the Oxford Group's message to

The phrase "early A.A." refers to the early fellowships and meetings held in Akron, Ohio. These
meetings took place between 1935 and 1939 when Alcoholics Anonymous was an integral part of "A
First Century Christian Fellowship" (Pitman 56). A.A. was the outcome of a meeting between Bill
W., a New York stockbroker, and Dr. Bob S., an Akron surgeon. Both had been hopeless alcoholics
(Fingarette 14).
Before this time, Bill and Dr. Bob had each been in contact with the Oxford Group, a mostly
nonalcoholic fellowship that emphasized universal spiritual values in daily living(Fingarette 15).
During this period, the noted episcopal clergyman, Dr. Samuel Shoemaker, headed the group. Under

office in New York to handle inquires and to distribute the A.A. book ( Fingarette 30). An article
was carried by Liberty magazine in the fall of 1939, resulting in some 800 urgent calls for help. At
the year's end, the membership stood at 2,000 (Pitman 83).
Then, in March of 1941, the Saturday Evening Post featured an excellent article about A.A. and the
response was enormous (Pitman 84). By the close of that year, the membership had jumped to
6,000, and the number of groups multiplied in proportion. The Fellowship was spreading across the
U.S. and Canada. By 1950, one hundred thousand recovered alcoholics could be found worldwide
(Pitman 85). As spectacular as this was, the period of 1940–1950 was nonetheless one of great
uncertainty (Wekesser 42). Could the mercurial alcoholics live and work together in groups? This
was the unsolved problem. By 1946, however, it had already become possible to draw sound
conclusions about the kind of attitude, practice and function that would best suit A.A.'s purpose
(Fingarette 40). Bill codified those principles, which had emerged from the strenuous group

My Favorite Trip At The Royal Palace Of Henry Viii
What a great weekend, I do not know which was my favorite event. One minute I was at the Royal
Palace of Henry VIII and another minute I was in Stonehenge. No matter what happen, I will

Royal Palace of Henry VIII. Our tour guide Heather, gave us the entire tour of the place. My
favorite part of the tour was the clock due to the fact it was a 24 hour clock telling which day,
month, and season it is. After the tour, we had two hours of free time and most of us wanted to see
Henry VIII toilet and all I can say is that toilets during that time was different than the ones now.
When we all saw the toilet, all the frat boys decided to go to the maze and we all race find the exit,
which took us three times longer since we passed by it three time. At the end, we all admit that Ryan
Straub–Fisher beat all of us. Following a morning run, I decided to chow down on my first Fish &
Chips which the fish was so tender and the batter was cooked spot on. After lunch, we were taken on
a long bus journey to Holbrook house where we are all going to stay for two nights. Tour guide

Reflection On Professional Development
In this short essay my own personal view on professional development will be made evident through
reviewing past experiences, allowing recommendations for better practice to occur. Other topics
discussed and analysed will be; the structure of the organisation, the effectiveness on leadership and
management. My own role within the organisational structure will be reflected on, considering the
impact of skills in practice, further, justifying what I will need for future personal and professional
development.
Reflective practice is an important tool, as people learn from their own professional experiences
(Pascal and Brown, 2009). Reflection provides opportunity for furthering personal and professional
development (Nganga, 2011). As it helps to certify knowledge skills and experience that is used
within practice (Freire, 1972).
Boud, Keogh and Walker (1985) states that, looking through past and present experiences helps with
progression in the future. The reflection on practice is finding the weaknesses and overcoming them
(Dyer and Taylor, 2012).
Johns (2000) situates that a number of models can help to structure a reflection. As they provide a
framework that helps develop a deeper understanding and analysis. One reflective model is Schön
(2002) the model of reflection–in–action and reflection–on–action. This model is beneficial to use as
it involves working on getting to the bottom of what is happening in the experience process, such as;
the decisions made and the feelings felt at that time of the event. Reflection–on–action involves
looking over the event and drawing on professional knowledge to understand what happened and
why it happened and to develop deeper knowledge (Thompson and Pascal, 2012). However, this is
not the only model that could be used. Other models such as Kolb (1984), Gibbs (1988) and
Brookfield (1995) have different frameworks to help breakdown an issue.
I like to use Schön (2002) model in the workplace as I am thinking about what I am doing as I am
doing it. This does not provide a lot of time to think in depth and to break the event down, leading to
not gaining a better understanding of what happened, without this I have no targets to better my
professional development.

How To Be A Good Entrepreneur
Question 1
What are the steps to be a good entrepreneur? Write your suggestion and recommendation based on
your observation and experience in Malaysia.
1.0 Introduction
An entrepreneur is a person who organizes and manages a business undertaking, assuming the risk
for the sake of profit. According to Martin (2010) an entrepreneur sees an opportunity which others
do not fully recognize, to meet an unsatisfied demand or to radically improve the performance of an
existing business. To have self–belief that this opportunity can be made real through hard work,
commitment and the adaptability to learn the lessons of the market along the way. For example,

The Wind in the Willows: Kenneth Grahame and Neopaganism
The beauty of the English countryside––cultivated or wild, pastoral or primeval, it was an endless
source of inspiration for eighteenth–century Romantic poets. Such notables as Wordsworth, Keats,
and Shelley envisioned ancient and exotic Hellenic gods in familiar, typically British settings.
Douglas Bush says of Keats, "For him the common sights of Hampstead Heath could suggest how
poets had first conceived of fauns and dryads, of Psyche and Pan and Narcissus and Endymion" (
Pagan Myth 46). Later writers, clearly influenced by the Romantic world view, would describe
idealized pastoral scenes in terms of "the rich meadow–grass . . . of a freshness and a ... Show more

I can look back and trace the evolution in my own thought from Presbyterian to pagan; it was harder
to envision a course of events that would result in the frankly Romantic mythology of "The Piper"
growing from the Scottish Calvinist soil of a Victorian banker. The insights of Grahame biographer
Peter Green, although some of his interpretations were contradicted by other sources, helped in the
formation of a plausible explanation. I have come to believe that Kenneth Grahame's treatment of
Nature and pagan themes went beyond the general Victorian/Edwardian tendency to idealize the
countryside, and reflected alienation from society and his own life's circumstances.
An understanding of the literary traditions influencing a Mid–Victorian like Grahame is a logical
starting point. Douglas Bush, in Mythology and the Romantic Tradition in English Poetry , relates
that "Browning liked to think of Pan as the shaggy goat–god, benevolent or amorous; Keats . . .
reveled in details, half real, half fanciful, or primitive pastoral life, and . . . Shelley's Pan . . . is as
disembodied as Ariel" (137). Actually, "Pan" was a sort of allegorical shorthand, emblematic of
sentimentality, passionate emotion, and recoil from reason and the "mechanical conception of the
world" (43). Nature, once an assortment of phenomena

From Out of the Shadows: Americanization of Mexican...
The Progressive Era is generally applied to a variety of responses to the economic and social
problems to rapid industrialization introduced in America. Although the era can be narrowed down
to focus on the history of Mexican American women living in the Southwest and Midwest of the
United States between 1890 and 1919. Some of the events involved within in the Mexican
community during the time were a variety of processes including restriction, deportation or
Americanizing immigrants from Mexico. Women and their children were especially involved in
some of the American groups trying to assimilate large numbers of the Mexican community. The
history of Mexican American Women in the Southwest and Midwest is mentioned in detail in Vicki

Housewives also played a major role in converting the Mexican community in more quickly because
women often held the family and instilled values to their children. For Methodist religious workers,
they hoped to share their beliefs and encourage women along with their families to become part of
their church because "they perceived themselves as harbingers of salvation" (37). Believing they
would save families similarly with Franciscan missionaries who tried to convert the indigenous
tribes Spain's colonization in South American areas, they attempted to bring them into a better life
style. This also meant better hygiene habits were taught for the woman and her family. As a result
some women became conflicted with trying to find a way to live a life of being non–Catholic while
trying to maintain their Mexican cultural affinities. Those who have became Methodist found it hard
to be accepted within their community because most strived to remain Catholics despite what the
Methodist associates had to say about their religion. Being a foundation of the family often gave
them smaller choices as individuals since they still needed to feel accepted within both Methodist
American and Catholic–Mexican cultural societies.
Among some of the positive aspects/factors of Houchen, they provided useful resources to Mexican
women by offering

William Golding's Lord Of The Flies: Character Analysis
Most may believe that in a state of nature people would organize themselves into groups and choose
a higher order. William Golding, author, of Lord of the Flies attended Brasenose College at Oxford
University and studied English Literature, after college he taught English and Philosophy at Bishop
Wordsworth's School in Salisbury. His experience in teaching young boys served as inspiration for
his novel Lord of the Flies. Approximately ten years after returning, in 1945, Golding published his
first novel, Lord of the Flies, after twenty one rejections. In 1940, Golding joined the Royal Navy
and fought in World War II. Golding wrote Lord of the Flies to show a savage side of human nature
in the perspective of boys getting stranded on an island after their plane crashed. The novel is about
boys named Piggy, Ralph and Jack, the main conflicting characters, who find each other after the
crash and together form a leadership. From the beginning Jack conflicts against Ralph and ends up
breaking from him and the rest of the group. When it comes to Lord of the Flies it is believed that
this is the perfect portrayal of people naturally organizing themselves into groups, believing in

reins of being a parent and looking out for the welfare of the boys on the island. Not only was Ralph

Jude the Obscure and Social Darwinism Essay
Jude the Obscure and Social Darwinism
Jude the Obscure is indeed a lesson in cruelty and despair; the inevitable by–products of Social
Darwinism. The main characters of the book are controlled by fate's "compelling arm of
extraordinary muscular power"(1), weakly resisting the influence of their own sexuality, and of
society and nature around them.
Jude's world is one in which only the fittest survive, and he is clearly not equipped to number
amongst the fittest. In keeping with the strong Darwinian undercurrents that run through the book, a
kind of "natural selection" ensures that Jude's offspring do not survive to procreate either. Their
death by murder and suicide is but one of many grisly instances of cruelty ... Show more content on

Not like our poor boy here."(3)
Although the Widow Edlin's words refer to Jude's physical status, Hardy is also using them to
comment on Jude as a societal and intellectual being. On that level too, he was clearly not fit enough
to emerge triumphantly from the struggles of Darwinian society.
If Hardy's message is that only the fittest can escape nature and society's cruelties, then one must
ask, which of the characters in the novel is most successful in the competitive atmosphere?
Phillotson certainly achieves some measure of professional success as a schoolmaster, but like Jude,
he too was unable to break into the echelons of university academia. Furthermore, despite marrying
Sue, his union with her was less than successful. One gets the sense that in his one–sided love for
Sue, Phillotson was swept along powerlessly by the tides of his own sexuality just as Jude was.
Rather than pro–actively seeking to cultivate Sue's love for him or to gain some form of self–
determination, he chose to remain meek and impassive, very much allowing Sue to determine the
course that his life with her would take, if it was to be with her at all.
Is Sue then the prime candidate for social fitness in the work? Sue herself fought against the

Ginneken et al. (2010:1115) explains that CHWs were located in health clinics full–time and were
no longer flexible community–based workers. Their responsibility to the community changed for the
worse. Many CHWs started resenting unpaid requests from fellow villagers. "The government now
has this huge thing, they've got this small business programme, the pay roll. And the village health
workers, if the pay doesn't come out, they 'toy toy', they don't go to work" (Ginneken et al.
2010:1115). Introducing this stipend caused CHWs to reject volunteer work.
A CHW Framework has been established by South Africa to guide the development of a national
CHW programme. This Framework has failed to recognize diversity, needs and flexibility, and this
has cause to say the aim is invalid. The current potential professionalisation of CHWs makes the
ideal 'bridging gap' between the community and the health system more distant. Once the diversity,
needs of people, and the flexibility within the CHW programme's are recognised, the gap between
the community and the health system will be inexistent (Ginneken et al. 2010:1116).

Christmas Essay example
A few days before Christmas, Oxford street is swarming with last minute shoppers, laden with
parcels and bags. Christmas is the highlight for many people, especially little childen, from as tall as
your ankle to as tall as your knee. Small todlers were moaning and disappearing into the clothes
racks like magicians disappearing in a puff of smoke entertaining the gullible audiences.
Families and friends gradually emerge from clogged buses and congested trains, tired, exhausted
and hungry even at this very early stage, as if they had spent the whole night awake, like a distressed
parent waiting for their child to arrive home from a party but has still not arrived, two hours past
their curfew. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

fresh scoop of vanilla ice–cream. The snow was as white as the marzipan on a wedding cake,
smooth as glass, flat as a pancake and beautiful as the wings of a butterfly opening for its first time.
Along the street, above the distressed shoppers, was a sea of decorations, of all colours,
simultaneously changing, on and off, to the rhythm of my feet, whilst ambling through the streets of
Oxford. The Christmas lights were shaped in all kinds of shape you could possibly imagine and they
were so bright that the twinkle in the lights glistened on the icing floor as though it was a star. It also
shimmered on the shoes, which men were wearing.
The combination of the snow and the Christmas lights makes me feel as though I was entering
another world full of amusement, ecstasy and anticipation as Christmas draws in.
The atmosphere is pleasant, though everybody seems to be distressed and having problems on their
minds, as though they were carrying the weight of the whole, entire world on the shoulders. The

Christopher Hitchens was a British–American intellectual and writer who was known worldwide for
his controversial opinions and provocative forms of expression. His works were published in a
number of books and in multitudes of magazines, such as Vanity Fair, Slate, and The Atlantic, just to
name a few. However, a large portion of his time was spent actively expressing his opinions in
televised debates, public forums, and university speeches. His interest in political science after
graduating from Balliol College in Oxford molded his ideas into a general theme of "anti–

This, in turn, gives his argument much more weight and validity. The ability to capture such an
audience requires a great deal of scholarly language, which he accomplishes by utilizing his wide
vocabulary. His work is loaded with words like "scrupulous," "refractory," "sanguinary," ("The Real
Mahatma Gandhi"), "fatuous," and "invocations" ("Free Speech"). The use of such words gives his
arguments a sense of sophistication, which serves to make his arguments sound legitimate.
Furthermore, through scathing remarks about his subject, his humorously brutal tone serves to
engage and entertain his audience. Witty comments, such as "But the two greatest achievements of
Austria are to have convinced the world that Hitler was German and that Beethoven was Viennese,"
allow Hitchens to discredit his subject and say that it has not had any "real" accomplishments.
Altogether, he demonstrates that valid criticism of anyone can be entertaining, yet scholarly.
One distinct style that set Hitchens apart from most thought–provoking scholars is his use of
obscene and politically incorrect language. This works to "shock" the reader and to engage them
even further. In his Vanity Fair essay, "Why Women Aren't Funny," he discourteously insists that
most humorous women are "hefty or dykey or Jewish, or some combo of the three" ("Why Women
Aren 't Funny"). Hitchens is known

A Rose For Emily By William Faulkner
"A Rose for Emily" In a small town one of the unwritten rules seems to be that you tend to know
everyone in it. This is true in any small town in America. Faulkner begins his tale (via narrator of
which we never know the identity) of Miss Emily Grierson's home with a vivid description of where
the events take place and the townspeople 's reaction. "It was a big, squarish frame house that had
once been white, decorated with cupolas, and spires and scrolled balconies in the heavily lightsome
style of the seventies, set on what had once been our most select street" (Faulkner 299). This gives
the reader a good idea of where we start our journey. One can tell by the description Faulkner is
talking about the post bellum era by the Victorian description of the house. The reader also gets the
feeling that it is way past its prime and in need of repair. Quite a dire setting. The story is told in five
parts and leads the reader through a mix of emotions and is quite dark in its telling. The reader can
sense that Miss Grierson has a rather high opinion of herself and her status in the town. She is
described as a "tradition, a duty, and a care, a sort of hereditary obligation upon the town" (Faulkner
299). A polite southern way to say a tolerance or a nuisance. The tolerance is illustrated in the
passage describing how a past mayor had "fabricated a tale of her father's financial assistance to the
town" (Faulkner 299) and used this tale to excuse her tax obligation to the town. With

Globalization And Its Impact On Globalization
The world as we know it, is changing everyday at any given moment. This could be economies,
cultures, religions, environments, etc. Yet, there is one term that has become greatly more popular in
our generation. This would be globalization. Globalization is discussed about by many people even
myself included, but do we really know what it further entails? Globalization has allowed many
countries to come together and succeed in more efficient markets, wealth equality, and new
solutions for all that are involved. Furthermore, we must analyze globalization, look at different
arguments for and against it, and discover what purpose it's trying accomplish across the world.

They believe that the idea of creating a society that is closer to the model of liberal politics will
produce a better running country. I would have to disagree with that statement because I see many
problems associating with an all liberal society. The main problem being that power lies within the
individuals, not the government. I think the government should always have more authority over the
people to keep the country in order. The government has more experience and should do whats best
for the country in the first place, so all individuals can be satisfied. The reason why we have
governments in the first place is to run countries and make sure they are prospering. Furthermore, I
do like the ideas that they present and I think it has great intent towards globalization. Now looking
into Sen's work, we see a little different view point on what she thinks of globalization. She truly
does believe that globalization has a lot to offer, but it also comes along with many problems. The
two main problems that she highlights in her writings are ethical and human concerns. Basically, she
is concerned on the fact that in globalization, we are taught that people are being treated equally and
fairly in all aspects. Yet, her findings suggest that many individuals are still being mistreated and not
fully accounted for in the "equal distribution" part. She also brings up another idea about if the poor
is actually getting the same shared benefits

The Beautiful University City of Cambridge
The beautiful city of Cambridge has an enviable reputation as one of the world's greatest universities
as well as being an agreeable place to live and work. The inhabitants enjoy low unemployment, a
cluster of good schools and plenty of green spacious parkland. The river Cam provides a focal point
in the summer with its flotilla of punts gliding around gentle bends overhung with lush willows.
Two vibrant communities
Cambridge is a city of two vibrant communities, that despite a chequered past of friction and
confrontation now seem to co–exist with ease. Both the students and locals go about their business,
almost independent of each other. Many scholars are completely unaware of the delights the city has
to offer away from the seclusion of their learned places and locals would be hard pressed to tell you
where any university building was apart from King's College Chapel and maybe the University
Library, with its huge soaring tower. Most central colleges face inward to courtyards hidden behind
castle–like buildings, giving no clue to the enclosed delights (that can include a lake with huge fish).
Secret and enchanting places only accessed by gatehouses guarded by porters – keepers of the

medieval, Jacobean, classical and Victorian. This city is an architectural historians paradise where

My Teaching Philosophy
Since the beginning of my academic career, teaching has always been an important part of my
academic duties.
The interaction that I have with students is not only enjoyable to me, but it also gives me an
invaluable perspective on the subjects I am teaching. Since I started my position at the Mathematical
Institute at the University of
Oxford, I have tutored in four classes across three semesters and supervised two projects, as detailed
in my CV.
I am also tutoring two new undergraduate classes in the first semester of 2017. I was also a teaching

I was particularly happy when a student would give a solution that is different from the one I had in
mind. In that instance, I would encourage the student to give further details and I would ask other
students if they had other methods. This ensured that the students were not only engaged but
actively contributing to the lecture. Even though student engagement is easier to accomplish in
smaller classrooms, it is even more important in larger classrooms where students' voices drown in
the hollow of the lecture hall. Ensuring that at least a portion of the students is engaged will
encourage certain students to ask questions which are likely to be on the mind of other, more
reserved, students.
In my opinion, learning in a class should simulate scientific research as much as possible. When a
researcher in mathematics studies a new subject, she starts with an observation, makes a conjecture,
verifies the conjecture with experiments and finally, formulates a generalisation with a proof. This
process enforces a context which the researcher keep referring to, namely the original example. The
result is a deeper understanding of the concepts and the ability to predict the future ones. As a
teacher, I try to simulate a faster version of this research process.
I try to start from simple examples that demonstrate some aspect of the topic. I then try to make the

Reflection On Clinical Placement
DESCRIPTION During my clinical placement, I have done the nursing standard 2 which is
engaging in therapeutic and professional relationships. An example of one event in my placement
where I have done this standard is when doing interviews in my two–week community placement at
the Community Rehabilitation in Armadale Hospital. For my reflection, I will be using the Gibbs'
Reflective Cycle (1988). FEELINGS I am normally a very shy person so when we were told that we
were to do interviews on the first day of my community placement I felt scared. I did not know how
to approach people confidently let alone do an interview. I knew I could do it but I was not confident
enough. I was already feeling overwhelmed because it was my first time to be placed in a hospital.
EVALUATION The good thing in my experience would be that I got to have the experience of
doing interviews and I actually enjoyed it. I also gained more confidence in interacting with my
patients. The not so good thing would be that I have gained confidence in talking to my patients but
not the staff or the people I was working with. I was still very shy in communicating with them.
ANALYSIS I have learnt to do interviews during my placement. Because I took that step out of my
comfort zone I believe that I have learnt a lot. I have learnt to take a step out of my shell and try. I
have learnt that it is not worth getting worked up over doing interviews and talking to people, as it

Life is rough for millions of poor food producers, the current economic crisis especially makes the
industry extremely tough for them. The rise and fall in demand and prices can mean the difference
between eating a nice meal or going a day with nothing to eat. Women are worst affected by this as
they are often employed casually and with low wages. Commonly the first to be let go when times

Topshop
Introduction
I am looking at Topshop for this report. Topshop is a very large British fashion store for young
women selling fashion clothes, shoes and accessories. There are Topshop stores throughout the UK.
The flagship store in London Oxford Street is the biggest fashion store in Europe. Topshop is part of
the Arcadia group which owns other fashion stores such as Miss Selfridge and Warehouse. Topshop
mainly sells its own brand products but in larger stores it has concessions of other more expensive
similar clothes. As well as selling Topshop clothes in Topshop store, they have concessions in large
department stores such as Selfridges. They also have a website where you can buy a lot of the
Topshop range including shoes and clothes for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Consumer environment.
Depending on the time of day you go into Topshop depends on the types of people you would see in
there. In the week in the morning the shop is normally quite empty, the only people you would see
in there are young women who are probably unemployed or students. These people probably will
not buy much but will stay in the store for a while. If you go in to Topshop at lunch time it will be
busier and will have young professionals who are just popping in on their lunch break. These people
probably already know what they are going to buy and so will just buy it then leave. At weekends
the store is a lot busier, it is full of all sorts of people who will probably all spend quite a while in
the shop trying things on and then buying.
All Topshop stores look very similar when you walk in, you will know you are in a Topshop store.
There are always pictures of the latest fashions on the walls. There are also a lot of things to look at
instantly when u walk in whether it is accessories or the latest fashions. For example in the London
Oxford Street flagship the floor you walk in on is full of accessories and so it is very colourful and
exciting especially compared to the dull, busy street outside. All Topshops are very brightly lit but
the walls are normally white and the pictures are often black and white. I

Limitations Of Naturalistic Observation

  • 1. Limitations Of Naturalistic Observation Naturalistic observation involves making observations of everyday events and recording those observations in an objective manner (Stangor, 2016, p.39). Participants of a naturalistic observation are observed in natural surroundings. The goal of naturalistic observation is to create a "snapshot" of the current state of affairs. One advantage to naturalistic observation is that it provides a way to collect data about the topic of interest (Stangor, 2016, p.40). Naturalistic observation is said to have ecological validity. Ecological validity refers to the extent to which the research is conducted in situations that are similar to everyday life experiences of the participants (Stangor, 2016, p.40). This research design also allows the researcher to observe group behaviors in a specific setting. Despite its advantages naturalistic observation also has some limitations. This design does not assess relationships among variables (Stangor, 2016, p.39). Meaning that a cause and effect relationship cannot be created. The results of this observation are generally limited to the group being studied. More importantly, naturalistic observation cannot be used to test research hypotheses about which types of group behavior are related to or caused by which other variables (Stangor, 2016, p.41). During the open meeting, the orienteer and gatekeeper, Susan was the person orienting the group. She introduced the items on the agenda, helped keep the group focused and on track. Susan does the ... • 3. Similarities Between College And University The terms college and university originally had very similar meanings. Only with the passing of centuries did university come to signify an educational institution composed of more than one college. The word college means literally "union formed by law," or a group of people associated in some common function. The ancient Roman craft guilds were called collegia. The closest parallel today is the corporation, a business organization chartered by a government.  During the Middle Ages students at the universities of Paris, Oxford, and Cambridge found it convenient to rent houses and share expenses instead of living in private apartments. By the 13th century these "houses of scholars" were becoming legally recognized corporate institutions. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When used in its modern sense as a place for advanced learning, it usually required the addition of other words such as "masters and scholars." The term that was normally used to describe a legally chartered school of teachers and students was studium generale, meaning a place of study open to students from all parts. The universitas was a group of teachers or students (or perhaps both) within the studium. A studium was quite similar to a guild in both origin and composition. The beginners were essentially apprentices, called bachelors, while the teachers were the masters.  The studium probably emerged when the bishop of a diocese gave a teacher permission to operate a school other than the local cathedral or monastery school. It is likely that a license to teach was granted to a master after a formal examination. The studium itself became a school that granted a teaching license to its scholars after they completed a prescribed course of study and passed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Oxford University Importance Oxford University is one of the oldest Universities in existence. It is located in Oxford England about 50 miles northwest of London and is the oldest University in England. Oxford University is important because it is vital to not just people in England, but to the whole world at large. It has been first and foremost in setting standards for teaching and learning. Oxford has been known for exceptional communication skills which were needed in trade between countries and smaller entities for universal progress among people. What can I say then, Oxford University helped lead the way to progressiveness internationally and continuing to stand tall amongst the greatest and the best known of its kind. Oxford is a university to be reckoned with . The early school of Oxford was a gill, an organization of tradesmen whose chief purpose was to control teaching by limiting the number of teachers. There are some indicators concerning the origin of the institution. From all indications the masters elected one of their member as head officer and gave him the title of chancellor. The head of the university bears this title. The students organized themselves into groups much like modern college fraternities. Nevertheless there is a record of lectures from other european countries at oxford as early as 1117. Between 1167 and 1168 foreign students were expelled from the University of Paris after relations between england and paris broke off . Consequently, many students from ... • 7. The Problem Of Pain Cs Lewis Analysis The Reasoning Behind Pain and C.S. Lewis Clive Staples Lewis was born on November 29, 1898 in Belfast, Northern Ireland to Albert J. Lewis and Florence Augusta Hamilton Lewis. He had an older brother, Warren, and the two were very close. When he was three years old, he announced that his name was "Jack", and he was called Jack by family and friends for the rest of his life. His early life was very happy. His parents were avid readers and the home was filled with books. Lewis was raised as a Protestant and was taken to church services each Sunday. In August, 1908, Lewis' mother died from abdominal cancer when he was nine years of age. His happy and stable childhood was shattered. He was sent off to various boarding schools, including ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "If the universe is so bad, or even half so bad, how on earth did human beings ever come to attribute it to the activity of a wise and good Creator?" (Lewis, C.S. The Problem of Pain, p. 3.) Prehistoric man first wrote of fear of a supernatural being, and Lewis describes a feeling of awe and fear which he calls Numinous. He describes man's consciousness of morality, and the inherent feeling of knowing right from wrong. God is all powerful and good, yet the world is full of evil, tragedy, loss and suffering. Lewis argues that life cannot exist independent of the natural world and because we have the freedom to make choices, human suffering is inevitable. "We have seen that in a stable and meaningful universe a possibility of pain is inherent; and in a universe of creatures, inclined, by virtue of their fallen nature, to move away from God, evil becomes, so to speak, endemic." (Bacz, Jacek.) God is full of love and goodness. Man, however, is not perfect, we make mistakes, we make bad choices, we can be wicked and evil resulting in great suffering to ourselves and others. The pain we experience is the mechanism to bring us closer to God, and to become blessed and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

(needs in text citations)The term lobbing has been around our politics since the creation of the nation. The right to petition the government is based off of the first amendment, in which the people have a right to peaceably assemble and petition the government for grievances. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the reasons for nurse burnout is inadequate staffing. Inadequate nurse staffing effects many individuals. Most importantly, patients, nurses as well as hospital administrators. According to Department of Professional Employee [DPE], (2016), staffing issues affect nurses as it leads to nurse burnouts and affects nurse's health, increasing their risks for hypertension, cardiovascular disease and depression. Understaffing also leads to expensive human resources problems that can affect hospital administrator's budgets. The harsh demands of nursing are forcing nurses to consider alternative careers. Studies have shown the overall turnover cost per registered nurse is $65,000 (DPE, 2016). One solution proposed by NYSNA is the Safe Staffing for Quality Care Act, it proposes to "require acute care facilities and nursing homes to implement certain direct–care nurse to patient ratios in all nursing units; sets minimum staffing requirements; requires every such facility to submit a documented staffing plan to the department on an annual basis and upon application for an operating certificate; authorizes nurses to refuse work assignments if the assignment exceeds the nurses abilities or if the minimum staffing is not present."(bill A6571) This bill was passed by the New York State Assembly on June 14, 2016, the assembly of NY is in support of safe ... In "Blood Done Sign My Name: Echoes of the South's troubled past," critic MiChelle Jones is positive towards the book and focuses on Tyson's charming style, innate historic value, and unique perspective as he chose the familiar story of racism and set it in a time that was more preoccupied with other news, ending with an assertion that it's a commentary to the country's recent past. In a Kirkus Review post, the review spends time establishing Tyson's role in the story and in the story's events, wrapping up with praise and saying that the book is a reminder of civil rights being a struggle on both sides. • 15. Contributions Of William Golding William Golding was a famous British author, poet, and playwright. Golding contributed to British Literature by writing several works for which he was acknowledged. His most famous work is a novel called Lord of the Flies which was published in 1954. Lord of the Flies is still being read today around the world. In addition, two movie versions based on the novel were released. The first version was released in the United States in 1963 and the second version was released in 1990. The Lord of the Flies remains a relevant piece of literature today as it shows what happens in nature when there is no central governing body. His pessimism about the nature of humanity was obviously reflected in his writing. William Golding's childhood, school life, and war experience heavily influenced his work as a playwright, poet, and an author of Lord of the Flies. On September 19, 1911 William Golding was born at his maternal grandmother's house in Newquay, Cornwall (England). This was approximately six years after his older brother Joseph was born. Golding also had an adopted sister named Eileen. She was his blood cousin and was adopted in the 1930s. His parents were Alec and Mildred A. Golding (neé Curnoe). The whole family lived in Marlborough, Wiltshire. Alec was a master of science at Marlborough Grammar School. • 17. Lewis Carroll 's ' Wonderland ' Unbeknown to many, Alice in Wonderland borrows a lot from the reality of its author. As a matter of fact, Alice in Wonderland has as much to do with its author as it has to do with creativity. Lewis Carroll's beliefs are written all over the story as one navigates through the alternate reality he presents in the novel. Before exploring the evidence of Lewis Carroll's spiritual beliefs in Alice, it is important to understand what actually constitutes Lewis Carroll's beliefs. Notably, other than being an author, Lewis was an Anglican clergyman, a mathematician and a talented formal logician. Other than studying at Christ Church Oxford, he went ahead to lecture at the same institution (Auerbach, 1973). Indeed, this brief history presents an individual whose life is deeply founded in religion. Conventionally, religion is founded on three fundamental principles, that is, the existence of an alternate reality, belief in supernatural force, and of course, the conquest of good over evil. These form the foundations of religion and are indeed, the very tenets upon which Alice in Wonderland is founded. As a matter of fact, in his book "The Gospel in Disney," Longfellow (1993) asserts that Christian lessons are learned from Alice in Wonderland. In Alice in Wonderland, Lewis presents and entirely alternate reality. Alice finds herself in a world other than the one in which she lives. At the very start of the story, Alice finds herself in distress. From this set up, Lewis akin to his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When outliers become outliers, it is not just because of their own efforts. It's because of the contributions of lots of different people and lots of different circumstances." Wes Moore is one of the many great examples of a Gladwellian "outlier," as evinced by his upbringing, extraordinary success, and the rare opportunities he received. From growing up in a broken neighborhood to almost dropping out of school, it seemed as if the author of The Other Wes Moore would follow the same dark path as his criminal counterpart with the same name... but he did not. Wes Moore went on to become a successful graduate of John Hopkins ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His extraordinary successes and achievements place him in a category many can only aspire to be – an outlier of society. One's childhood has a lasting impact on their entire life. Moore's upbringing and the loving family he was born into, no matter how trivial it may seem, greatly contributed to his success. Wes seemingly grew up the same as any other kid in the Bronx – in a single–parent household, surrounded by bad influences... what separated him from the crowd? His support system: his family, and their ultimate support and sacrifices made all the difference. As a teenager, Wes seemed to be going down the wrong path. He constantly skipped school, his academic failures were overwhelming, and he was even arrested for vandalism. In the case of the other Wes, his family simply let these actions slide, and decision after decision ultimately landed him with a life sentence in prison. The author Wes's mother, however, refused to allow this behavior to continue. As a method of intervention, she forced Moore to attend Valley Forge, and in doing so, probably saved his career. The extent of his family's sacrifice was evident on page 95 when Wes realized that "my grandparents took the money they had in the home in the Bronx, decades of savings and mortgage payments, and gave it to my mother ... The History of Cambridge University The beautiful city of Cambridge has an enviable reputation as one of the world's greatest universities as well as being an agreeable place to live and work. The inhabitants enjoy low unemployment, a cluster of good schools and plenty of green spacious parkland. The river Cam provides a focal point in the summer with its flotilla of punts gliding around gentle bends overhung with lush willows. It is a city of two vibrant communities, that despite a chequered past of friction and confrontation now seem to co–exist with ease. Both the students and locals go about their business, almost independent of each other. Many scholars are completely unaware of the delights the city has to offer away from the seclusion of their learned places and locals would be hard pressed to tell you where any university building was apart from King's College Chapel and maybe the University Library, with its huge soaring tower. Most central colleges face inward to courtyards hidden behind castle–like buildings, giving no clue to the enclosed delights (that can include a lake with huge fish). Secret and enchanting places only accessed by gatehouses guarded by porters – keepers of the portcullis. Within the city boundaries are a dense collection of architectural styles ranging from medieval, Jacobean, classical and Victorian. (Cohen & Mohrman, 1995) Teamwork is used everyday, everywhere in business organisations. It is an important way of bringing people together, developing stronger bonds between members and quickly tackling large projects. There have been many theorists who have developed conflicting theories regarding the pros and cons of working in teams, thus the ageing problem in hand is firstly being able to identify these advantages and disadvantages, and secondly trying to find solutions to reducing or avoiding these disadvantages. The ability to do this is of paramount importance for leaders everywhere ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Allport argued that the key to resolving conflict was better interaction between members. The foundation of this argument is that interaction consolidates a feeling of group identity resulting in stronger bonds between group members and encourages friendships. In this way, if we examine Allport's theory with reference to Guirdham's, we could see that team members might be less likely to abuse group norms. However, one problem that could arise as a follow on from encouraging team members to become friendly with one another is the idea of groupthink, which I shall discuss shortly. The second advantage I am going to discuss is that group members all motivate one another. In order to provide evidence for this statement it is necessary to re–examine one of the theories mentioned earlier; Group norms (Guirdham, 1995). Guirdham suggests that every team member is encouraged to adopt these four norms which encourages stronger bonds between the team members and can convert simple group members into friends. This therefore leads to an environment in which everybody gets along. However, it could be argued that there are two major consequences and disadvantages that may arise through this type of approach. I already touched upon the first one; somebody in the group may abuse the group norms and morale may be lowered. The second is the idea of groupthink (Janis, 1972). How Oxford Has Coped with the Demands of Modern-Day Tourism We shall see in this essay how a city has coped with the many demands of modern–day tourism and maintained its position as a Mecca for millions of travelers. "Today's travel and tourism industry has grown into a global economic powerhouse whose combined direct and indirect impact on the world economy is enormous, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).". ( Fuller,2014) Fodor's travel guide says Oxford has perhaps "the most famous university in the world". Since Oxford University can traces it routes back to 1167 the city has been attracting people from across the globe for centuries. The history of the city, largely forged by the university, has led to the need for other inter–related services notably in accommodation, transportation, travel organisations and the development of other destinations. Both public and private sectors have responded to the challenge. In the City of Oxford there are many examples of hospitality and tourism, as seen by the constant stream of visitors who crowd its streets at weekends throughout the year, striving to get the best view of the historic number of colleges protruding onto every street. This is Oxford's prize possession that sets it apart from other destinations in the UK and the world. However there are sub sectors that play a big part in Oxford. Generally, the places in the story can be categorized as public and private space. This category will also be the skeleton of this essay. The River Cherwell is a major tributary of the River Thames in central England. It rises from Northampton, England to Oxford, England. Then, The River Cherwell merge with The Isis which is from Oxford, England to London, England. When The Isis arrive London's territory, it is called River Thames. River first appears as a metaphor while Harriet is shrugging weather she should go back to Oxford despite the heated discussion of her rumor with Peter Wimsey. "But she doubted whether she were now capable of any such withdrawal. She had long ago taken the step that put the grey–walled paradise of Oxford behind her. No one can bathe in the same river twice, not even in the Isis." (Sayers 19) This is a reference to Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher meaning that you cannot step into the same river twice because you are changing and the river is changing. This is also an indication of the transformation of both characters and place. The transformation of river as Heraclitus suggests is also a symbol of changes in ideology. Essay On Alcoholics Anonymous Alcoholics Anonymous an Open Meeting Dominique Steinburg describes mutual aid as a process through which people develop collaborative, supportive, and trustworthy relationships; identify and use existing strengths and/or to develop new ones; and work together toward individual and/or collective psychosocial goals. (Steinburg, 2010) Alcoholics Anonymous is mutual aid group that supports individuals in their recovery from alcohol dependence. Established in the mid 1930's, Alcoholics Anonymous was borne from the principals of self–improvement and mutual aid practiced by the Oxford Group. The Oxford Group was a popular religious movement in the United States and Europe at that time. (AA) When Rowland H., a prominent Rhode Island businessman and Yale graduate, relapsed into his alcoholism, the renowned psychoanalyst Carl Jung, refused to provide any further treatment citing that Rowland had reached the end of what psychology and medical science had to offer him. Carl Jung recommended that Rowland H. seek spiritual guidance and referred him to the Oxford Group. (Blum, 2006) After experiencing nothing short of a miraculous recovery, Rowland H., decided to act upon one of the principals took the Oxford Group's message to a friend named Ebby Thatcher, who was struggling with alcoholism and facing a prison sentence. These meetings took place between 1935 and 1939 when Alcoholics Anonymous was an integral part of "A First Century Christian Fellowship" (Pitman 56). A.A. was the outcome of a meeting between Bill W., a New York stockbroker, and Dr. Bob S., an Akron surgeon. Both had been hopeless alcoholics (Fingarette 14). Before this time, Bill and Dr. Bob had each been in contact with the Oxford Group, a mostly nonalcoholic fellowship that emphasized universal spiritual values in daily living(Fingarette 15). An article was carried by Liberty magazine in the fall of 1939, resulting in some 800 urgent calls for help. At the year's end, the membership stood at 2,000 (Pitman 83). Then, in March of 1941, the Saturday Evening Post featured an excellent article about A.A. and the response was enormous (Pitman 84). By the close of that year, the membership had jumped to 6,000, and the number of groups multiplied in proportion. The Fellowship was spreading across the U.S. and Canada. By 1950, one hundred thousand recovered alcoholics could be found worldwide (Pitman 85). As spectacular as this was, the period of 1940–1950 was nonetheless one of great uncertainty (Wekesser 42). Could the mercurial alcoholics live and work together in groups? This was the unsolved problem. By 1946, however, it had already become possible to draw sound conclusions about the kind of attitude, practice and function that would best suit A.A.'s purpose (Fingarette 40). • 41. Reflection On Professional Development In this short essay my own personal view on professional development will be made evident through reviewing past experiences, allowing recommendations for better practice to occur. Other topics discussed and analysed will be; the structure of the organisation, the effectiveness on leadership and management. My own role within the organisational structure will be reflected on, considering the impact of skills in practice, further, justifying what I will need for future personal and professional development. Reflective practice is an important tool, as people learn from their own professional experiences (Pascal and Brown, 2009). Reflection provides opportunity for furthering personal and professional development (Nganga, 2011). As it helps to certify knowledge skills and experience that is used within practice (Freire, 1972). Boud, Keogh and Walker (1985) states that, looking through past and present experiences helps with progression in the future. The reflection on practice is finding the weaknesses and overcoming them (Dyer and Taylor, 2012). Johns (2000) situates that a number of models can help to structure a reflection. As they provide a framework that helps develop a deeper understanding and analysis. One reflective model is Schön (2002) the model of reflection–in–action and reflection–on–action. This model is beneficial to use as it involves working on getting to the bottom of what is happening in the experience process, such as; the decisions made and the feelings felt at that time of the event. Reflection–on–action involves looking over the event and drawing on professional knowledge to understand what happened and why it happened and to develop deeper knowledge (Thompson and Pascal, 2012). However, this is not the only model that could be used. Other models such as Kolb (1984), Gibbs (1988) and Brookfield (1995) have different frameworks to help breakdown an issue. I like to use Schön (2002) model in the workplace as I am thinking about what I am doing as I am doing it. This does not provide a lot of time to think in depth and to break the event down, leading to not gaining a better understanding of what happened, without this I have no targets to better my professional development. ... The Wind in the Willows: Kenneth Grahame and Neopaganism The beauty of the English countryside––cultivated or wild, pastoral or primeval, it was an endless source of inspiration for eighteenth–century Romantic poets. Such notables as Wordsworth, Keats, and Shelley envisioned ancient and exotic Hellenic gods in familiar, typically British settings. Douglas Bush says of Keats, "For him the common sights of Hampstead Heath could suggest how poets had first conceived of fauns and dryads, of Psyche and Pan and Narcissus and Endymion" ( Pagan Myth 46). The insights of Grahame biographer Peter Green, although some of his interpretations were contradicted by other sources, helped in the formation of a plausible explanation. I have come to believe that Kenneth Grahame's treatment of Nature and pagan themes went beyond the general Victorian/Edwardian tendency to idealize the countryside, and reflected alienation from society and his own life's circumstances. An understanding of the literary traditions influencing a Mid–Victorian like Grahame is a logical starting point. Douglas Bush, in Mythology and the Romantic Tradition in English Poetry , relates that "Browning liked to think of Pan as the shaggy goat–god, benevolent or amorous; Keats . . . reveled in details, half real, half fanciful, or primitive pastoral life, and . . . Shelley's Pan . . . is as disembodied as Ariel" (137). William Golding, author, of Lord of the Flies attended Brasenose College at Oxford University and studied English Literature, after college he taught English and Philosophy at Bishop Wordsworth's School in Salisbury. His experience in teaching young boys served as inspiration for his novel Lord of the Flies. Approximately ten years after returning, in 1945, Golding published his first novel, Lord of the Flies, after twenty one rejections. In 1940, Golding joined the Royal Navy and fought in World War II. Golding wrote Lord of the Flies to show a savage side of human nature in the perspective of boys getting stranded on an island after their plane crashed. • 53. Jude the Obscure and Social Darwinism Essay Jude the Obscure and Social Darwinism Jude the Obscure is indeed a lesson in cruelty and despair; the inevitable by–products of Social Darwinism. The main characters of the book are controlled by fate's "compelling arm of extraordinary muscular power"(1), weakly resisting the influence of their own sexuality, and of society and nature around them. Jude's world is one in which only the fittest survive, and he is clearly not equipped to number amongst the fittest. In keeping with the strong Darwinian undercurrents that run through the book, a kind of "natural selection" ensures that Jude's offspring do not survive to procreate either. Their death by murder and suicide is but one of many grisly instances of cruelty ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not like our poor boy here."(3) Although the Widow Edlin's words refer to Jude's physical status, Hardy is also using them to comment on Jude as a societal and intellectual being. On that level too, he was clearly not fit enough to emerge triumphantly from the struggles of Darwinian society. If Hardy's message is that only the fittest can escape nature and society's cruelties, then one must ask, which of the characters in the novel is most successful in the competitive atmosphere? Phillotson certainly achieves some measure of professional success as a schoolmaster, but like Jude, he too was unable to break into the echelons of university academia. Furthermore, despite marrying Sue, his union with her was less than successful. One gets the sense that in his one–sided love for Sue, Phillotson was swept along powerlessly by the tides of his own sexuality just as Jude was. Rather than pro–actively seeking to cultivate Sue's love for him or to gain some form of self– determination, he chose to remain meek and impassive, very much allowing Sue to determine the course that his life with her would take, if it was to be with her at all. Is Sue then the prime candidate for social fitness in the work? Sue herself fought against the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 55. Essay on Communication Barrier between Science and the... The world is a large place filled with many diverse cultures. Within these different cultures, unique languages and ways of healing have risen. Due to overpopulation and the constant need for new technology, these cultures have come together to create a better way of life. The problem we face today is not finding the sources of medication, but the communication barrier between science and the community. Community Health Worker Programmes During the late Apartheid era in South Africa: Apartheid was a policy or system of segregation or discrimination on grounds of race (Oxford University Press Southern Africa, 2007). (2010:1115) explains that CHWs were located in health clinics full–time and were no longer flexible community–based workers. Their responsibility to the community changed for the worse. Many CHWs started resenting unpaid requests from fellow villagers. "The government now has this huge thing, they've got this small business programme, the pay roll. And the village health workers, if the pay doesn't come out, they 'toy toy', they don't go to work" (Ginneken et al. 2010:1115). Introducing this stipend caused CHWs to reject volunteer work. A CHW Framework has been established by South Africa to guide the development of a national CHW programme. This Framework has failed to recognize diversity, needs and flexibility, and this has cause to say the aim is invalid. The current potential professionalisation of CHWs makes the ideal 'bridging gap' between the community and the health system more distant. Once the diversity, needs of people, and the flexibility within the CHW programme's are recognised, the gap between the community and the health system will be inexistent (Ginneken et al. 2010:1116). • 57. Christmas Essay example A few days before Christmas, Oxford street is swarming with last minute shoppers, laden with parcels and bags. Christmas is the highlight for many people, especially little childen, from as tall as your ankle to as tall as your knee. Small todlers were moaning and disappearing into the clothes racks like magicians disappearing in a puff of smoke entertaining the gullible audiences. Families and friends gradually emerge from clogged buses and congested trains, tired, exhausted and hungry even at this very early stage, as if they had spent the whole night awake, like a distressed parent waiting for their child to arrive home from a party but has still not arrived, two hours past their curfew. ... The snow was as white as the marzipan on a wedding cake, smooth as glass, flat as a pancake and beautiful as the wings of a butterfly opening for its first time. Along the street, above the distressed shoppers, was a sea of decorations, of all colours, simultaneously changing, on and off, to the rhythm of my feet, whilst ambling through the streets of Oxford. The Christmas lights were shaped in all kinds of shape you could possibly imagine and they were so bright that the twinkle in the lights glistened on the icing floor as though it was a star. It also shimmered on the shoes, which men were wearing. The combination of the snow and the Christmas lights makes me feel as though I was entering another world full of amusement, ecstasy and anticipation as Christmas draws in. The atmosphere is pleasant, though everybody seems to be distressed and having problems on their minds, as though they were carrying the weight of the whole, entire world on the shoulders. • 59. Christopher Hitchens 's Views On Politics, Culture,... Christopher Hitchens was a British–American intellectual and writer who was known worldwide for his controversial opinions and provocative forms of expression. His works were published in a number of books and in multitudes of magazines, such as Vanity Fair, Slate, and The Atlantic, just to name a few. However, a large portion of his time was spent actively expressing his opinions in televised debates, public forums, and university speeches. His interest in political science after graduating from Balliol College in Oxford molded his ideas into a general theme of "anti– authoritarianism." This theme was very well imbedded into his career, for he wrote much about politics, culture, religion, and literature. As a critic of both society and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This, in turn, gives his argument much more weight and validity. The ability to capture such an audience requires a great deal of scholarly language, which he accomplishes by utilizing his wide vocabulary. His work is loaded with words like "scrupulous," "refractory," "sanguinary," ("The Real Mahatma Gandhi"), "fatuous," and "invocations" ("Free Speech"). The use of such words gives his arguments a sense of sophistication, which serves to make his arguments sound legitimate. Furthermore, through scathing remarks about his subject, his humorously brutal tone serves to engage and entertain his audience. Witty comments, such as "But the two greatest achievements of Austria are to have convinced the world that Hitler was German and that Beethoven was Viennese," allow Hitchens to discredit his subject and say that it has not had any "real" accomplishments. Altogether, he demonstrates that valid criticism of anyone can be entertaining, yet scholarly. One distinct style that set Hitchens apart from most thought–provoking scholars is his use of obscene and politically incorrect language. This works to "shock" the reader and to engage them even further. In his Vanity Fair essay, "Why Women Aren't Funny," he discourteously insists that most humorous women are "hefty or dykey or Jewish, or some combo of the three" ("Why Women Aren 't Funny"). • 63. A Rose For Emily By William Faulkner "A Rose for Emily" In a small town one of the unwritten rules seems to be that you tend to know everyone in it. This is true in any small town in America. Faulkner begins his tale (via narrator of which we never know the identity) of Miss Emily Grierson's home with a vivid description of where the events take place and the townspeople 's reaction. "It was a big, squarish frame house that had once been white, decorated with cupolas, and spires and scrolled balconies in the heavily lightsome style of the seventies, set on what had once been our most select street" (Faulkner 299). This gives the reader a good idea of where we start our journey. One can tell by the description Faulkner is talking about the post bellum era by the Victorian description of the house. The reader also gets the feeling that it is way past its prime and in need of repair. Quite a dire setting. The story is told in five parts and leads the reader through a mix of emotions and is quite dark in its telling. The reader can sense that Miss Grierson has a rather high opinion of herself and her status in the town. She is described as a "tradition, a duty, and a care, a sort of hereditary obligation upon the town" (Faulkner 299). A polite southern way to say a tolerance or a nuisance. The tolerance is illustrated in the passage describing how a past mayor had "fabricated a tale of her father's financial assistance to the town" (Faulkner 299) and used this tale to excuse her tax obligation to the town. • 67. Globalization And Its Impact On Globalization The world as we know it, is changing everyday at any given moment. This could be economies, cultures, religions, environments, etc. Yet, there is one term that has become greatly more popular in our generation. This would be globalization. Globalization is discussed about by many people even myself included, but do we really know what it further entails? Globalization has allowed many countries to come together and succeed in more efficient markets, wealth equality, and new solutions for all that are involved. Furthermore, we must analyze globalization, look at different arguments for and against it, and discover what purpose it's trying accomplish across the world. Authors John Micklehwait, Adrian Wooldridge, and Amartya Sen have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They believe that the idea of creating a society that is closer to the model of liberal politics will produce a better running country. I would have to disagree with that statement because I see many problems associating with an all liberal society. The main problem being that power lies within the individuals, not the government. I think the government should always have more authority over the people to keep the country in order. The government has more experience and should do whats best for the country in the first place, so all individuals can be satisfied. The reason why we have governments in the first place is to run countries and make sure they are prospering. Furthermore, I do like the ideas that they present and I think it has great intent towards globalization. Now looking into Sen's work, we see a little different view point on what she thinks of globalization. She truly does believe that globalization has a lot to offer, but it also comes along with many problems. The two main problems that she highlights in her writings are ethical and human concerns. Basically, she is concerned on the fact that in globalization, we are taught that people are being treated equally and fairly in all aspects. Yet, her findings suggest that many individuals are still being mistreated and not fully accounted for in the "equal distribution" part. She also brings up another idea about if the poor is actually getting the same shared benefits ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Two vibrant communities Cambridge is a city of two vibrant communities, that despite a chequered past of friction and confrontation now seem to co–exist with ease. I am also tutoring two new undergraduate classes in the first semester of 2017. In that instance, I would encourage the student to give further details and I would ask other students if they had other methods. Even though student engagement is easier to accomplish in smaller classrooms, it is even more important in larger classrooms where students' voices drown in the hollow of the lecture hall. Ensuring that at least a portion of the students is engaged will encourage certain students to ask questions which are likely to be on the mind of other, more reserved, students. In my opinion, learning in a class should simulate scientific research as much as possible. When a researcher in mathematics studies a new subject, she starts with an observation, makes a conjecture, verifies the conjecture with experiments and finally, formulates a generalisation with a proof. This process enforces a context which the researcher keep referring to, namely the original example. The result is a deeper understanding of the concepts and the ability to predict the future ones. As a teacher, I try to simulate a faster version of this research process. I try to start from simple examples that demonstrate some aspect of the topic. I then try to make the ... An example of one event in my placement where I have done this standard is when doing interviews in my two–week community placement at the Community Rehabilitation in Armadale Hospital. For my reflection, I will be using the Gibbs' Reflective Cycle (1988). FEELINGS I am normally a very shy person so when we were told that we were to do interviews on the first day of my community placement I felt scared. I did not know how to approach people confidently let alone do an interview. I knew I could do it but I was not confident enough. I was already feeling overwhelmed because it was my first time to be placed in a hospital. EVALUATION The good thing in my experience would be that I got to have the experience of doing interviews and I actually enjoyed it. I also gained more confidence in interacting with my patients. The not so good thing would be that I have gained confidence in talking to my patients but not the staff or the people I was working with. I was still very shy in communicating with them. ANALYSIS I have learnt to do interviews during my placement. Because I took that step out of my comfort zone I believe that I have learnt a lot. I have learnt to take a step out of my shell and try. I have learnt that it is not worth getting worked up over doing interviews and talking to people, as it will be a major part of my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
