Hester Prynne Analysis
John Bunyan once said, "One leak will sink a ship: and one sin will destroy a sinner". Hester
Prynne, a tenacious, honest, courageous woman, has committed an irreversible mistake that she will
be tormented with, for the rest of her miserable existence. She will be shunned from the rest of her
community, only to be accompanied with a constant reminder of the result of her act of love and
passion, an act which was also adultery. Her character is revealed through her isolated life with her
daughter, Pearl, but will never be forgotten by the scarlet letter upon her bosom. Additionally, Hester
Prynne connects to the main themes of the novel, frustration and guilt coagulated with sin by
internally struggling with the effects of her sin. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After many years of public dishonor due to the scarlet letter upon her bosom, Hester Prynne begins
to understand that she can utilize this cruel symbol by teaching her Pearl to avoid making the same
mistakes as she, "this badge hath taught me,––it daily teaches me,––it is teaching me at this
moment,––lessons whereof my child may be the wiser and better, albeit they can profit nothing to
myself"(92). Towards the end of the novel, Hester Prynne has another moment of recognition;
however, this time, her catharsis comforts her because she feels a sense of achievement and relief
when Reverend Dimmesdale, upon the scaffold cries, "Hester Prynne, for my own heavy sin and
miserable agony––I withheld myself from doing seven years ago, come hither now, and twine thy
strength about me", with this shocking public display, the scarlet letter transforms from a stigma
which attracted the world's scorn and bitterness, and becomes something to be sorrowed over, and
looked upon with awe (207). From W.D. Howell's viewpoint, Hester comes to the realization that
she cannot love Reverend Dimmesdale with the stigma that is manifested within the scarlet letter, so
Hester takes the scarlet letter from her bosom, and tosses it. With,"the stigma gone, Hester heaved a
long, deep sigh, in which the burden of shame and anguish departed from her spirit" (167). Hester
believes that she cannot commit to Reverend Dimmesdale with the wretched

Research Paper On John Bunyan
Books have been a form of entertainment for centuries. Authors from all over the world have been
writing books of various lengths and for various ages. In fact, many authors have become famous
because of their books. For example, C. S. Lewis has become famous because of his Narnia series,
Suzanne Collins because of her The Hunger Games trilogy, and Laura Ingalls Wilder because of her
Little House on the Prairie series. Millions upon millions of authors have written millions upon
millions of books, but not many can compare to The Pilgrim's Progress, by the famous author, John
Bunyan. John Bunyan was born on the November of 1628, in a small village named Elstow, in
England. His father's name was Thomas Bunyan, who had a job as a tinker, someone who mends
household tools. His mother's name was Margret Bentley, nothing much was known about her. He
had two siblings, Margret and Charles Bunyan. His family did not have much money or wealth, but

Therefore, John began to preach in the area, disregarding the law that you needed a license to
preach. In 1658, he was "accused" for preaching, but nothing serious happened to John. Despite the
law and the warning, John kept preaching God's word throughout the area. John did not stop
preaching until the year of 1660, when he was arrested and thrown into Bedford Prison. While he
was in prison, John wrote books. The titles of these books are Grace Abounding (His
Autobiography), Prison Meditations, and The Holy City. The Pilgrim's Progress was begun but was
not finished until 1678. In 1672, Charles II removed the law against the "illegal" preachers so John
and many others like him, were released and given licenses. Unfortunately, the law only stayed
removed for three years. After those three years, John Bunyan found himself back in prison. He was

Similarities Between Everyman And The Pilgrim's Progress
Religion has played a significant role in the shaping and molding of human civilization. In the
Middle Ages, religion was a core pinnacle that served as a source of guidance and meaning for
individuals and the state. The medieval play, Everyman, explores the journey of Everyman to
Heaven and the phases he must go through in order to stand before God to give an account of his
life. Everyman was written during a time when the Catholic Church's practice of penance was
paramount as a means for attaining salvation. The personification of the everyday person and
spiritual qualities in this play gives an impressive insight into the trials and victories that are part of
the Christian walk on the journey to eternal life. This work embodies the ... Show more content on

Therefore I pray you go thither with me To help me make mine account, for saint charity. (338–44)
However, he realizes that the people who walk on the narrow path in life are few. Every Christian on
a journey to eternal life longs for fellowship in order to have a sense of community and joy. The
outcome of life one strives for is to live a rewarding life. God will judge each individual's good and
bad deeds when all mankind stands before Him to give an account of their life. The allegorical
aspect of the play serves an important role in this scene because it appeals to the common individual
through its emphasis on relationship. Everyman's longing for a friend is an inherent desire of every
Christian because it gives them a sense of community while seeking purpose and meaning in life. In
his article, "The Doctrine of Friendship in Everyman," John Conley says, "In his hour of adversity
Everyman turns first to Fellowship, who like a true friend readily promises to help before he knows
what will be asked of him...But as soon as Fellowship learns what Everyman wants of him, he
reneges on his promise" (376). Here, Friendship appears to be a nice and loyal friend on the surface;
however, as the layers are removed, his true character is revealed. As

John Bunyan’s Pilgrime's Progress Essay
Many people wonder what it would be like to go from a dangerous city where they live and journey
to a plentiful heaven. This storyline is portrayed in John Bunyan's allegorical book, Pilgrim's
Progress. This fascinating story describes the life of Christian, a married man living in the City of
Destruction, who longs to travel to the Celestial City. As Christian struggles to stay on the right,
though more difficult path, I fight to focus in school and not pay attention to distracting ideas. I also
fight to get strong enough in dance to become a professional dancer, just as Christian has to climb
the Hill of Difficulty to get to the Palace Beautiful. In order for Christian to arrive at the Celestial
City without wasting away his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, I stood strong and said no, my homework was more important to me than chatting. In the
end, I realized that by focusing on what I knew was right, I set a good example for other people to
follow. While some of my friends were mad at me, and questioned me for what I had chosen, I soon
realized that taking my path would show others how being faithful towards a goal made life easier
for me to follow God. In order for Christian to reach the Palace Beautiful, he has to climb the Hill of
Difficulty. In the same way, I had to focus on my faith in order to become stronger person of God.
Similarly, Christian discusses how the better way to go was the most difficult way versus the two
other easy, but deathly paths: "Better, though difficult, the Right Way to go, Than Wrong, though
easy, where the End is Woe" (Bunyan 53). Formalist and Hypocrisy both take the easier paths, but
they end up in a deadly trap. While Christian struggles to get up the Hill of Difficulty, he makes it to
the Palace alive. In the same manner, I struggled to focus on my faith, school, and dance all at once.
Even though it was harder to stay strong in my faith, I learned that I soon became a stronger person
of God. I chose to take a special Bible class in which I had an hour to focus on the Bible and my
faith. This helped me towards my life goal to realize that focusing on one goal can often get me to

The Pilgrim 's Progress By John Bunyan
The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan is one of the most famous books in English literature and
the Protestant religion. It has been translated into more languages than any other book in existence
besides the Bible. He writes the story intricately, with many descriptive details, which causes the
story to seem almost life–like. The story can be enjoyed by people of any religion or belief. It
showcases Bunyan's poetic prowess, and his intellect as a writer, and this is why it is regarded as
one of the greatest books of all time. To begin with, an allegory is a story, poem, or picture that can
be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one, in this case a religious
one. The majority of the characters in the story, all have adjectives as names, which seems peculiar.
But, as the story goes on the characters seem to fit the meaning of their name or sometimes it is
blatantly stated in the story. The story can be confusing, irrational, and real, just like an actual
dream. The phrase "delivered under the similitude of a dream" means that the story is described in
so much depth, that the details seem almost illusional, hazy and dream–like. Subsequently, the
Interpreter is Christian's source of spiritual guidance, resembling a pastor or youth group leader in
today's world. It shows that because, the instance that Christian enters his home the interpreter
teaches him many lessons in the sense of a parable, exactly the way Jesus would do it. In a sense,

The Pilgrim's Progress Essay
The Pilgrim's Progress
The author of The Pilgrim's Progress is well described by Coleridge's remark: "His piety was baffled
by his genius; and Bunyan the dreamer overcame the Bunyan of the conventicle." This remark
points out the difficulty that Bunyan faces when he attempts to write a religious piece of work in the
style of allegory. The Pilgrim's Progress is "pious" because it is a piece written in dedication to God.
It contains important religious teachings –– what a good Christian should do and what he should not
do. What Coleridge means by Bunyan's "genius" is basically the story itself. The story is so well
written that people become so interested in the story and forget the whole spiritual truth behind and
this worry Bunyan. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People at his time indulged in plays and drama for purely earthly pleasure. This is opposed by the
Puritans since it is regarded as a kind of corruption and that one could be extracted from the
direction to God. But Bunyan justified that if these things are done for God, they could be accepted.
The phrase "I have used similitudes" that appeared at the original cover–page of the book explains
the use of similes, metaphors and other figures of language. God Himself also speaks in figurative
language, not in plain language. Bunyan is going to use similitude to tell the Christians what they
should do. It is therefore not for pure enjoyment to read this book. The aim of this book is to teach a
religious lesson and ask people to learn from it. Bunyan went on to justify what he did by saying
that God had allowed him to do so. He clarified that he was not writing to please anyone and that it
should never be used as a way to show off one's ability. He also reminded people that they had to
interpret the Bible for themselves for God is not always clear in what he says. The story opens as a
dream and this is significant because it is the way that God speaks to his prophets. Bunyan somehow
felt himself like a modern version of prophet and he is determined to write about his vision. The
word "I" has been used at the opening of the story and all throughout, and this is significant since
this "I" (the dreamer) can be anyone of us. There is a strong sense of

Analysis Of John Updike 's ' Araby '
John Updike 's penchant for appropriating great works of literature and giving them contemporary
restatement in his own fiction is abundantly documented––as is the fact that, among his favorite
sources, James Joyce looms large.[1]
With special affinity for Dubliners, Updike has, by common acknowledgment, written at least one
short story that strongly resembles the acclaimed "Araby," not only in plot and theme, but in
incidental detail. That story, the 1960 "You 'll Never Know, Dear, How Much I Love You"––like
"Araby"––tells the tale of a poor, romantically infatuated young boy who, though obstructed by
parental slowness, journeys with innocent urgency, coins in hand, to a seemingly magical carnival––
only to find there, behind its facades, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The self–delusion in both cases leads quickly to an emotional fall.
At 19, Updike 's protagonist, Sammy, is a good bit older than Joyce 's––at the opposite end of
adolescence, it would seem. While in Joyce 's boy we readily believe such confusion between the
gallant and profane, I think we needn 't assume that Sammy is likewise unable to distinguish
between the two quite normal impulses. His attraction to the girl in the aisle is certainly far more
anatomically and less ambiguously expressed than that of Joyce 's boy to Mangan 's sister. But it is
Beauty that confounds the issue. When human aesthetics come into play, when the object of a young
man 's carnal desire also gratifies him aesthetically, that is when the confusion arises. in Irish–
Catholic Dublin of the 1890s,[3] such youthful beauty not surprisingly invokes analogies between
Mangan 's sister and the Queen of Heaven (though the swinging of her body and "the soft rope of
her hair toss[ing] from side to side" [Joyce 30]), which captivate the boy, hint at something less
spiritual than Madonna worship). And while beauty 's benchmarks in Sammy 's more secular mid–
century America are more anatomical than spiritual, Updike does have Sammy call his young
femme fatal "Queenie," and he does make her the center of a "trinity" of sorts, showing her two
friends at one point "huddl[ing] against her for relief" ("A & P" 189).
Once smitten, both young

Metaphors In Pilgrim's Progress
The Metaphoricality of Pilgrim's Progress Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan is the third most sold
book in the English language. It has been read and loved dearly by people throughout the world, due
to the fact that it has been printed in over 200 languages and is considered the first novel in English.
A lot attributes to this popularity. The storyline, characters, and plot are all adventurous and easy to
get sucked into, leading to readers being unable to put the book down. However, the greatest
strength this book has is its use of metaphors and imagery. These two traits allow great storytelling
and teach quite a lot to readers everywhere. Pilgrim's Progress' use of metaphors hints at real life
through Christian's temptations, Christian's burden, and even Christian himself. ... Show more

The people besides Christian and a handful of others he meets such as Faithful and Hopeful are all
quite worldly, and seek to focus on themselves and their fleshly desires. Christian is tempted
multiple times to stray away from the path he was told to follow. Only once did he stray, because
Mr. Worldly Wiseman told him that there was an easier way to remove his burden. This would have
led to his death had Evangelist not turned him around. He also manages to overcome temptation by
staying on the path as well as remembering scripture and trusting in the Lord. Throughout the
temptations, Christian overcomes with the help of God. Christian's burden and the things
surrounding it represent much. It is the object that made Christian yearn for a better life and started
him on his journey. It represents sin. The Burden holds such a great weight on Christian that he
seems to be unable to be freed of it. Yet, the path to the Celestial City saves him from it. Christian is
free from his burden after he gazes upon the Cross and watches it roll away. The burden of sin is
heavy, but the path of salvation helps rid all of

A Rake's Progress Essay
William Hogarth is a name well known from the 18th century as one of the best artists for his work
A Rake's Progress. Despite his background that emerged from unsuccessful parents he did not
follow that trend for he used his thoughts about society to create works of life–sized paintings that
became so popular that he pushed for the Copyright Act of 1735 ("National Gallery Website").
Hogarth created A Rake's Progress in 1733 that contains the main character, Tom Rakewell, within
the borders of Britain and Bedlam, London to reflect the madness of the 18th century. The painting
has more than just brilliant craftsmanship but a story behind it that is hidden, but once revealed,
obvious. A Rake's Progress tells a story of the life of Tom Rakewell. ... Show more content on

A Rake's Progress shows a number of different types of people implicated. For example, Tom was
on his way to the Queen's birthday party when he was stopped by bailiffs and therefore his lifestyle
is actually being encouraged and supported by aristocrats. In A Rake's Progress, everyone from the
Queen to the priest that performs his marriage of convenience, to common prostitutes, are part of the
problem. But it is not just Hogarth's 'take no prisoners' approach to social commentary that made him
so popular. Printed satire was actually already very common place and central London was full of
bookshops and print sellers that displayed this kind of work. What Hogarth did do was to tell a story
through pictures. In fact, Hogarth's series were adapted into plays and pantomimes during his
lifetime. His visual drama offered his audience a new way to enjoy satire. The title A Rake's
Progress was referencing John Bunyan's The Pilgrims Progress. Hogarth successfully borrows from
popular culture in order to express complicated ideas through an enjoyable and totally accessible
story. Hogarth did this so well, he is celebrated to this day. Today is can be viewed in the Sir John's

The Progressive Era Of Social And Political Reform
During the time from the 1890s to the 1920s a period of social and political reform took place in the
United States known as the Progressive Era. "The era saw the expansion of political and economic
freedom through the reinvigoration of the moment for woman suffrage, the use of political power to
expand workers rights' and efforts to improve democratic government by weakening the power of
the city bosses and giving ordinary citizens more influence on legislation." The progressive
reformers from this time gained a majority of their support from the education middle–class of
urban areas. Another term used to describe these reformers is Muckrakers.
Muckrakers were investigative journalists who tried to make the public aware of the problems in
society that needed fixing. They stemmed from yellow journalism, which was a style of reporting
that used exaggeration to attract readers. In a speech made by U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt in
1906, the term muckraker was used in a derogatory way, he " borrowed the word from John Bunyan
's Puritan story Pilgrim 's Progress, which spoke of a man with a "Muck–rake in his hand" who
raked filth rather than look up to nobler things." However, it eventually came to take on a positive
overtone due to the serious social issues of the progressive era the muckrakers had underlined. The
muckrakers during the progressive era inspired Americans to take action and hence are responsible
for the social change that took place at that time.

An Analysis of The Pilgrim’s Progress Essay
A question has arisen concerning the conflicts used in John Bunyan's The Pilgrims Progress; the first
half of the book was originally published in sixteen seventy–eight while the second half was
published in sixteen eighty–four. Guilt, deception, shame, and fear are all major conflicts the author
uses that challenge the main characters, Christian and Christiana, on their journey to the celestial
city. Perhaps the hardest conflict Bunyan has Christian and his wife face is guilt. John Bunyan's
books have been some of the most popular books in Christian society. The novel itself has even been
called second to the bible. (Second is referring to the number of copies that have been sold.) While
the book itself has Christian represent "an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The modern version of the book is similar to a combination of old world and modern English.
Pilgrim's Progress uses hymns as a foreshadowing event alluding to a minor character's demise or a
good event. John Bunyan starts the book off as if the narrator is sleeping and has a dream. He also
uses imagery from the bible which includes the celestial city and the river of death. Bunyan grew up
in a home that was poor but he still had a love for the gospel. At one point in his life he was arrested
for preaching the gospel without being licensed to preach. The story is written in first person so it is
read like the story is being told to the reader. The limitations of the narrator would most likely be
that he is not able to describe the feelings of the dream characters with enough accuracy. The reason
for this is the narrator is experiencing a dream but he is not actually feeling the feelings that the
dream character is feeling. The language of the book itself started off in old English but has been
updated throughout the ages so that it is in modern English. A limitation the narrator has is he does
not know what will happen in the future and he cannot influence the outcome of the story. An
example of symbolism would be the burden that Christian has to carry on part of his journey. His
burden represents the sins that he has committed and the burden will only fall

What Is The Character Of Paraclete In The Pilgrim's Progress
Throughout Christian's journey in The Pilgrim's Progress, he encounters many dilemmas which
often throw him off the path to the Celestial city. However, whenever someone is with him or aids
him, he prevails and acquires more and more wisdom. If he has a constant guide or companion in his
journey, it will be less probable for Christian to stumble or get lost. John Bunyan should incorporate
the character "Paraclete" into his book, The Pilgrim's Progress, because he will provide help in times
of trouble, he will encourage Christian to overcome obstacles, and he will grant Christian someone
to talk to and travel with.
One thing Christian would benefit from on his journey is someone to help him when he is lost or
does not know what to do. Oftentimes Christian struggles facing foes during his journey to the
Celestial City and they slow him down. If Paraclete is there with him in these troubled times,
Christian will waste less time. When Christian faces Apollyon, Paraclete is there to help fight him
off and defend Christian when he is struggling. This is one of Paraclete's roles in The Pilgrims
Progress: to aid Christian in his battles of any kind. He also will help Christian escape from the
Giant Despair's castle. Paraclete can provide Christian with the answer to finding the key to his cell
in order for him to escape faster. Also, instead of listening to Mr. Worldly–wise and going in the

Vanity Exposed in Vanity Fair
The title Thackeray chose for his novel Vanity Fair is taken from The Pilgrim´s Progress by John
Bunyan. In Bunyan´s book, one of the places Christian passes through on his pilgrimage to the
Celestial City is Vanity Fair, where it is possible to buy all sorts of vanities. A very sad thing
happens there: the allegorical person Faithful is killed by the people. In the novel Vanity Fair
Thackeray writes about the title he has chosen: "But my kind reader will please to remember that
this history has 'Vanity Fair' for a title, and that Vanity Fair is a very vain, wicked, foolish place, full

no one, not even her friends, and she neglects her own son. A very hard judgement is passed on her

vanity, worldliness, and all sorts of crime" (752). When Rawdon leaves her it becomes harder for
her to retain her reputation. When she notices that people avoid her she works hard to be regarded as
respectable. She is not used to a life where she is not surrounded by admirers, and she is bored. She
makes Joseph Sedley listen to her lamentations on how she has been trampled on. He believes her

Pilgrim's Progress: The Theology of Justification by Faith...
The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan tells the story of Christian, a deeply religious man whose
self–imposed pilgrimage takes him through a variety of locations in his quest to reach Celestial City.
However, to better understand Bunyan's perspective on Christianity as given in his novel, we must
examine the life experiences of the author. Born in 1628, Bunyan lived in a time period that was
undoubtedly heavily influenced by the Reformation movement incited by Martin Luther only a
century earlier. The lives of Luther and Bunyan parallel in that both disagreed with fundamental
doctrines applied by the Church in their lifetime. Additionally, both were labeled as dissenters and
subsequently persecuted for adhering to their own principles ... Show more content on

Christian initially accepts this suggestion, for he is told by Mr. Worldly–Wiseman that Legality is a
man who is known for his good works (Bunyan, 19). Christian them embarks on the trip to the
Village of Morality, but in transit he encounters a hill that proved an insurmountable obstacle, along
with the reappearance of Evangelist who shames him for trusting in the earthly qualities of morality
and legality (Bunyan, 20–22). Therein we see confirmation of the notion that justification is by faith
alone. For Christian, via the instruction and teachings of Evangelist, discards the knowledge and
virtues of the concepts of morality and legality as nothing more than a fruitless diversion in
comparison to seeking the Celestial City (Bunyan, 22).
Second, we see the concept of justification by faith alone supported by the definition of By–ends as
a hypocrite and his ill–fated end. When By–ends first meets Christian, he was hesitant to reveal his
name. He then admits he differs in Religion from those of the stricter sort in that he abides by two
rules. He does not strive against Wind and Tide, and that he is most zealous when Religion goes in
his Silver Slippers, but not in his rags (Bunyan, 98). When Christian delivers the ultimatum that By–
ends must be willing to go against Wind and Tide and must also own Religion in his Rags as well as
his Silver Slippers, and stand by him too, when bound in Irons, as well as when he

prey on the weaker–for example, Curley 's wife threatens to have Crook 's lynched. What we can
take from incidents like this is that the strength to oppress others is itself born of weakness.
Economic Reality
There is no doubt that this book is a critique of pure market capitalism. The alienation of the worker
or the unemployed is very evident. The ethics are ‘dog eat dog '–a total lack of regard for the
dignity of the human person. The struggle of Labour to regain its dignity is best exemplified in
Steinbeck 's ‘In Dubious Battle '.
Motifs
1. A man only world
2. The Corrupting Power of Women
3. Loneliness
4. The Human Spirit
Steinbeck has been criticized for many things including the creation of ‘a mans ' world where
women take a secondary place. There is no doubt but that he was influenced by the macho acting
Hemingway in this regard. Women are looked on as self–serving and or dangerous, the Femme
Fatale beloved of Film Noir. They tempt men to behave in ways they would otherwise not do, e.g.–
Curley 's wife fulfils the dangerous flirt stereotype. Loneliness is a recurring motif in the novel.
There is a great fear of being cast off–each character is looking for a friend. A less that obvious
motif is that of the strength and resilience of the Human Spirit. A novel of comparison here is Alan
Sillitoe 's, ‘The

John Locke
The enlightenment era arose in the modern cultural ideology of the 18th century, as ideas among
philosophers had a widespread effect among the society. The age of enlightenment, in western
society, projected the rejection of traditional Christianity, western philosophy, intellectual advances,
scientific, and cultural life, government legitimacy and authority. Upon the enlightenment period
multiple philosophers emerged, the individuals arose to leading figures using reason to understand
all aspects of human life. The motivations for the enlightenment came primarily from the
Englishmen, John Locke. John Locke was a philosophical influence in both political theory and

This ideology is embraced during the French Revolution as "before the revolution, French society
was grounded in the inequality of rights," among the citizens. (Spielvogel578) The French were
divided into classes, having no voice among the three estates, leading to the national assembly. The
national assembly, influenced by John Locke's ideology of rejecting royal reign superiority, created
the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. Locke's argument of revolution against
tyranny was accepted to bring reasonable rule to the nation and citizens. The same liberalist view of
overthrowing of ruler is seen during the napoleon rule. Benjamin Constant published The Principles
of Politics advocating for the regulations of the generals will of the individuals liberty,
"distinguishing between sovereignty, authority, and individual freedom," right before Napoleon's
final defeat. (Primary Sources 342)
Many of John Locke's ideas were input into the Declaration of Independence, as his primary words
"life, liberty" and instead of property, the pursuit of happiness, are the basis of the American
Constitution and Declaration of Independence. Locke's arguments concerning liberty influenced the

Comparing The Pilgrim 's Progress And Paradise Lost
Comparing The Pilgrim's Progress and Paradise Lost, Two Works Focused on Salvation Two
influential pieces of English literature, both focusing on the topic of salvation, are The Pilgrim's
Progress, written by John Bunyan in 1678 (2269), and Paradise Lost, composed in the previous
decade by poet John Milton in 1667 (1945). While these two works both pay special attention to
mankind's preoccupation with being saved, they differ vastly from one another in the language and
literary style used in each respective piece, the way in which salvation itself is portrayed, and also in
how the salvation of each story's characters is determined through their resistance to temptation and
the state of their relationship with God. Before even mentioning the content of the works
themselves, it becomes immediately evident that the writing styles of The Pilgrim's Progress and
Paradise Lost are near polar opposites of one another. For example, in The Pilgrim's Progress, author
John Bunyan writes in a simple prose style, which is relatively easy for most to comprehend. In
contrast, John Milton, in Paradise Lost, employs a complicated, original poetic style that is the first
of its kind. In using some Latin words and phrases while employing a rhyme scheme commonplace
in Latin poetry, Milton is able to construct an eloquent, highly polished language in this piece.
However, in still using English as the poem's primary language, Milton is still able to effectively
communicate its theme to his

The Pilgrim 's Progress By John Bunyan
The Pilgrim's Progress written by John Bunyan was a very deep and touching story to me. After
reading it and trying to interpret what it was saying I decided that I could actually relate more to this
story than I realized through my faith as a follower of Jesus Christ. John Bunyan uses a dream of the
main character, Christian, to describe a life changing event for Christian to grow spiritually while
traveling and meeting new people and having first time experiences. The Pilgrims Progress is an
allegory to the Bible and Christianity that portrays what we as Christians believe in. Bunyan uses
the pilgrimage of Christian to express this allegory using the experiences and people Christian
comes into contact with to explore the struggles and challenges of life on earth Christians faces daily
when seeking eternal life. The first challenge Christian faces is his guilt. As a Christian, I was
always taught right from wrong according to the Bible and when I am in the wrong for something, I
feel guilty because I know it is wrong and that it is not necessarily how God wants me to live my
life or what he wants from me. The guilt arises because I am promised eternal greatness after my life
here on earth as long as I believe in Jesus Christ and I continue to strive to be a Christian, and well
lets face it, who would not feel guilty being promised such an amazing thing in exchange for being a
good person and following the biblical scripture of Christ. "I dreamed, and behold, I saw a man

John Bunyan was a great man of God. He accomplished many great things during his life. I decided
to do my biography on him because he was a Godly person and wrote a wonderful book called The
Pilgrim's Progress.
Furthermore, John Bunyan was born in 1628 in Elstow, Bedfordshire. He grew up tinkering just like
his father. John Bunyan stole apples and played 'Robin Hood' with his two friends. In 1644, his
mother and sister died. Soon after he turned sixteen, he joined the army. During battle, he met a
soldier named Gibbs. Unlike Bunyan, Gibbs always read his pocket Bible and believed in God.
Bunyan,on the other hand, didn't read his pocket Bible or believed in God.
Moreover, John Bunyan soon wanted the war to end. In 1647, he left the army. He ... Show more

During his years in prison, he wrote Grace Abounding. It chronicled his five years of torment.
Thereafter, on the May of 1665, a plague broke out in London like a swarm of bees. Bunyan was
allowed to stay home until the plague was over. Subsequently, a colossal fire started in London. Six
years later the declaration of indulgence was passed and Bunyan was freed.
In 1676, Bunyan went back to prison for not attending the parish. During his year in prison Bunyan
continued writing The Pilgrim's Progress. Six years after he was released from prison, he published
The Pilgrim's Progress. This book is about someone named Christian who is going to the Celestial
City. There are many obstacles in his way. These obstacles were similar to the landscape where he
lived. The other characters were also reflections of real people.
Hence, John Bunyan's life was a rollercoaster of emotions. Although his childhood was very

John Bunyan a man who was and is important to Christianity, but who was he? John Bunyan was
born on 11/30/1628 and died on 8/31/1688. John Bunyan was also the author of "The Pilgrim's
Progress" and "Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners" two very important pieces of Christian
Literature for the time. He also preached to the people of England near the town of Bedford. Bunyan
served as a Protestant leader, and was faithful to God. Bunyan's life will be analyzed from an aspect
of his life, split into two topics of early life and adult life, his worldview, and his accomplishments
in his lifetime. John Bunyan's early life did not make him look like a servant for the Lord. His
childhood was not well recorded; however, it was known that he was being taught to be a tinkerer by
his father. In the year 1644 during the spring both his mother and sister passed away. Later, in the
same year but during the fall he was enrolled in the Parliamentary army during the English Civil
war. In the year 1647 after three years of service in the army he went home to resume being a
tinkerer. Soon Bunyan's life would change in a completely different way. John Bunyan's early life

The symbolism in the first act shows how corrupt Chicago law enforcement can be and how easily

this time of day, the media and the common people are so easily brainwashed by current events that
the media will praise criminals, this even happens in the media today.

Pilgrim's Progress Research Paper
Is John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress autobiographical? Before Bunyan wrote Pilgrim's Progress, he
wrote his spiritual autobiography, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners. In this book, he tells of
his conversion and many of his struggles before and after. There are many similarities between
Bunyan's experiences in Grace Abounding and in what he wrote about in Pilgrim's Progress:
Bunyan's and Christian's (the main character in Pilgrim's Progress) journey to salvation was very
similar, Bunyan and Christian had similar experiences concerning God's promises, and the man in
the iron cage (in Pilgrim's Progress) represents a situation Bunyan went through when he thought he
could not be saved.

After Bunyan became a Christian, he experienced a time of hardship and temptation. He found
himself in great despair and questioning God. God revealed Himself to Bunyan and reassured him of
the scriptures and His promises. Bunyan says in Grace Abounding, "The scriptures were now
wonderful to me. I saw their truth and reliability as the keys to heaven. ... This temptation made me
understand more about the nature of God's promises than ever before." In Pilgrim's Progress, he
writes of Christian and Hopeful straying from the right path. They were captured by the giant,
Despair, and thrown into his dungeon where they were deprived of food, water, and light. The giant
threatened to kill them and tempted them to take their own lives. Nearly overcome with despair,
they were tempted to do this when Christian remembered he had a key called Promise. Since it
could be used to unlock any door, they unlocked the dungeon door and escaped. Bunyan, Christian,
and Hopeful had all learned a valuable lesson about how God's promises can overcome despair and

Analysis Of The Book ' Christian Travels '
Finally he indicates the condition of man through the journey it takes to get out of the city. In the
story, Christian travels out of the city only to find that the path is almost as treacherous as the city
itself. First he falls into the Bog named the Slough of Despond. The Slough is not only very hard to
see, but the way though the bog is hidden from all travelers. In the Story, Help describes the slough
as being desolate because of the fears, doubts, and discouraging apprehensions that come to a sinner
who is enlightened (Bunyan 23). John Bunyan clearly illustrates a path that is hard to follow
because leaving sin is one of the hardest things to do. Bunyan confirms that he believes that sin is
hard to leave by telling us of his early hardships with temptations. "The temptations of sin became
so overwhelming" that Bunyan felt like selling his soul to the devil and after trying to say no he
gave into Satan (Abrams 2134–2137). Then later in the Journey to the Cross, Bunyan also uses the
character named World to describe the many other hardships that come along the trail. "Thou art like
to meet with in the way which thou goest wearisomeness, painfulness, hunger, perils, nakedness,
sword, lions, dragons, darkness and in a word, death and what not?" (Bunyan 25). Clearly Bunyan
wants to show that the condition of man is terrible because of the awful problem of sin that pulls
every person away from God.

Pilgrim 's Progress By John Bunyan
1) Pilgrim 's Progress by John Bunyan is an infamous Christian allegory and wildly considered to be
the first great book of the non–secular English language. After the Bible, it was the most read book
for centuries. Bunyan wrote it based on his largely Baptist, often Calvinist theology. This is evident
in Pilgrim 's Progress through the name choices of the main characters and his conversation with
Ignorance regarding reaching the Celestial City. The major points which are total depravity,
unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistible grace, and perseverance of saints. Total
depravity states that all mean are inherently sinners, unconditional election entails that certain
people were predestined to receive God 's grace no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Christian tries to correct him and explain that there is only one way to the Celestial City, and his
deeds do not matter. Due to the doctrines of Predestination and Total Depravity, Christian is correct
under Calvinism. Since Ignorance is inherently a sinner, and not elect, he is unable to accept God 's
grace and enter the Celestial City by means of his own path according to the concept of Total
Depravity. However, one way that Pilgrim 's Progress contradicts Calvinist theory is when Christian
is reading his bible at the very beginning and confesses to his family that he is worried for their
safety because fire from Heaven will soon obliterate the city that they live in and he doesn 't know
how to save them. This is contradictory to Calvinism because Christian should inherently know that
he cannot. Since God has preordained everything that will ever happen, Christian cannot save his
family unless that was already been in God 's plan. Pilgrim 's Progress largely exemplifies Calvinist
ideology throughout the text with each new character that Christian meats. Bunyan made his
viewpoint very clear every everyone of his literary decisions from what the characters shall be
named to how they go about their journeys. Although there are a few nuances that seem less than
Calvinistic, such as Christian 's worries at the beginning, for the most part it stats true to the Calvin
course.

Epic in A Piligrim's Progress by John Bunyan and Heart of...
What is an epic? What does a piece of literature need in order to be considered an epic? An epic is a
journey that the protagonist takes in order to find who they are themselves. A Pilgrim's Progress by
John Bunyan and Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad are two pieces of literature in which this
appears. However, A Pilgrim's Progress: Part One is more of a dream journey while Heart of
Darkness is an actual physical journey. Both of these novels however follow the standard pattern of
an epic in how they are both journey's in which the person comes to an understanding of themselves
which sometimes and sometimes does not end up saving him. A Pilgrim's Progress: Part One is a
novel that follows the structure of an epic in many different ways. For one, as even stated in the
novel, Christian's journey is a dream journey. Another way is how at the beginning of the novel the
protagonist Christian has a large burden on his back that he can not take off. This burden causes him
to have the conviction that he has many sins and is therefore in need of saving so he goes on a
pilgrimage in order to be saved. This follows the epic structure of being a young, naive man who
goes on a journey in order to obtain an understanding of himself. Throughout Christian's journey he
faces many challenges but also is helped by various people too.
Another part of the epic structure is the young man's journey through the underworld or hell. This is
shown in A Pilgrim's Progress through Christian's

muscular with short brown hair, tattoos, and brown eyes. John speaks with the politeness of a true

small child. His father, who raised John alone, is a man of few words who prefers coin collection
over socializing John is protective of people that are close to him. "You fight for your friend, to keep

the rage of war and fierce training. They have intense loyalty towards one another. If one gets
injured or killed, they all are affected dramatically. John takes protecting his squad as a sense of
duty. "...I was the crusty old sergeant, the one who claimed to want nothing more than to ensure that
they got back to their moms in one piece. I would do what it took to keep them safe" (194). He

Reflection About Suffering
Introduction
Christians know other Christians are prone to suffering. Non–Christians I have spoken to believe
that Christians have a happy life. Non–believers believe we do not endure suffering simply because
in their reality, God is personified as a genie; Christians can simply pray for what they desire in life;
examples including money, power, wealth, and the Lord will grant those desires immediately.
However, Christians know suffering is inevitable. From a theological standpoint, suffering is defined
as: "the experience of physical pain and mental distress."("suffering") If individuals were to evaluate
suffering from a Christian perspective, we must realize categories that come with suffering. First,
suffering is the consequence of the flawed nature of creation. Second, suffering is the direct
consequence of one's violation of God's laws. Third, suffering can be good for our faith, and finally
suffering is embedded in truth, Christianity, and within the church. Historical Development
Before looking at the categories which formulate suffering, I would like to look at Christian authors
who agreed with my categories of suffering and who also sparked my inspiration for evaluating
suffering from a believer's viewpoint.
The first author is John Bunyan. His book, The Pilgrim's Progress tells the story of Christian, a
pilgrim who journeys from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City. The City of Destruction
emulates the world; Celestial City heaven. Christian was

Of Mice and Men Importance of Friendship George and Lennie
Of Mice and Men has many themes presented by Steinbeck, one of which is about friendship. The
novella shows the relationship between the protagonists, George and Lennie, and showing how they
try to achieve the American Dream by working together. This is in contrast to many of the other
characters who are alone by themselves which seems to be the norm at the time of the Great
Depression. The reader is able to look at how the need to have a companion is portrayed by
Steinbeck, especially during the harsh economic times that the story is set in.
The reliance that George and Lennie have on one another is able to emphasise on how it is only the
friendship between the two of them which allows them to survive. Lennie saying 'I got you to look

could not stand the loneliness of being locked up in a prison or an asylum. This is also able to
highlight the true friendship which is separated at the end which also brings an end to the novella.
Thus the need for companionship, which is shown by other characters that are victimised within
society, is emphasised as other strive for what George and Lennie have.
Throughout the book Steinbeck uses many characters to emphasize a message which he wants to get
across to the reader. This is how the importance of being able to share a friend was vital during the
1930's as it was the time of the Depression era and everyone always needed someone else to be
with. This is what makes the true friendship between George and Lennie a key component of the

Ability's Inability (Rough Draft)
When considering Christian allegories that have been written through the years, one has stood out
from the rest. This piece of literature has stood the test of time and remained beloved by many
readers. In "Class Formation, Politics, Structures of Feeling" Geoff Eley states "Pilgrim 's Progress
is, with Rights of Man, one of the two foundational texts of the English working–class movement:
Bunyan and Paine, with Cobbett and Owen, contributed most to the stock of ideas and attitudes
which make up the raw material of the movement from 1790–1850" (Eley 217). The Pilgrim's
Progress was written by John Bunyan in February of 1678. At the time, Bunyan titled it "The
Pilgrim 's Progress from This World to That Which Is to Come; Delivered under the Similitude of a
Dream". In modern publications of the work, Bunyan's sequel to the work titled simply "Pilgrim's
Progress, Part II" has been added at the end of the original tale. Although the two tales were not
originally published back to back, reading them one after the other shows the striking differences
between them. Bunyan specifically used different events, people, and circumstance in the two
different parts to symbolically show how Christian life can vary greatly depending upon the
individual.
John Bunyan's readers wanted the story in The Pilgrim's Progress to continue beyond the original
tale. Two years after publishing the original story, Bunyan wrote his first sequel to The Pilgrim's

A Stranger Essay : Kindness To A Stranger
Kindness to a Stranger
It was a chilly evening in Southern Virginia many years ago. There was the old man whose beards
were glazed by the winter's frost, as he hopelessly waited for a ride across the river. Due to the frigid
north wind, his body was numb and stiff. Edward, who was passing by saw this desperate old man,
who looked so confused and helpless. He asked the old man, "what are you doing here at this late
hour?" The freezing man answered, "I am waiting for a ride to take me home." Edward took some
time with the old man, as they waited for a ride to take him to the next side of the river. The wait
seemed endless and ineffective. However, they both heard the faint, steady rhythm of approaching
hooves dashing along the icy path. Anxiously, the old man and Edwin watched as several riders
curved the bend. He let the first one pass without seeking attention from him. Apparently, Edward
was very annoyed, asking him the reason for not stopping the passing horseman. The man kept quiet
as he checked out on whether there was another one coming. The another one passed by, followed
by other two. When Edward saw that the old man was not using any effort to seek help from either
of the riders, he was tired and decided to leave the old man alone.
After a while, the last horseman by the name John Denis neared the spot where the old man had sat
like a snow statue. As this one came near, the old man caught the horseman's eye and said, "Sir,

The Enchanted Ground
While at Vanity–Fair, Faithfulness was caught and was killed (Bunyan The Pilgrim's Progress 158).
Christian was able to escape and was reminded that day that we as Christ followers need to be ready
for anything including death in order to make a difference in the world. As Christian moves on he
meets another man named Hope. Hope was an encouragement to Christian because he stressed that
now he is changed and he relies only on Christ for his strength (Bunyan The Pilgrim's Progress 158).
While they are together they talk about their journeys up to this point and both realize that they had
actually met the same old wise man and were directed in the same place. They ponder at what the
man had told them and were able to remember that he had told them that two was better than one
because the one is more open to temptation. They find this advice to be helpful especially as they

What Do You Learn About Steinbeck’s View of Human Nature...
This essay is about how John Steinbeck represents human nature and the nice and unfavourable
qualities people had during the American depression in the 1930s where the story 'Of Mice and Men'
took place. The story shows the way different people will react diversely to various situations. In
this case, living with the trouble of having to travel to faraway places to search for jobs. It shows
how some people can behave overly difficult while others can be calm, friendly and easy to live
with. The many characters in the story represent the many different combinations of worthy and
unworthy qualities but this essay shall concentrate on three characters Slim, Curley and Crooks.

Crooks is a very good representation of a victim of one of the worst qualities in humans – racism.
He also represents how some people may react to such mistreatment. He shows how the cruelty to
victims can change them and cause them to feel lonely and sometimes angry in Crooks' case. 'I can't
play because I'm black.' This shows how racist people exclude him from activities and such like just
because he is black in colour showing racial prejudice. Crooks also expresses the intolerance shown
towards him by other people when he says 'If I say something, why it's just a nigger sayin' it.'
Another example of the discrimination is when Candy compliments his room and crooks replies in
the tone of sarcasm, 'Sure, and a manure pile under the window.' His living conditions also show the
lack of respect towards Crooks – his ' bunk was a long box filled with hay.' Although Crooks has to
live in this way, John Steinbeck writes how he takes it and gets on with it. 'He kept his distance and
demanded that other people kept theirs. Crooks also shows his loneliness – Sometimes he gets
thinkin', an' he got nothing to tell him what's so an' what ain't so.' This shows how he, unlike Lennie,
has no one to talk to or share thoughts with, no one to express his feelings to or ask a question.

years old, Travis Coates lives with his mother and little brother, Arliss, in the hill country of Texas
during the 1860s when his father must leave home to work on a cattle drive. He leaves Travis to "act
a man's part" and take care of the family in his absence. While working in a cornfield one day,
Travis come across Old Yeller and tries to drive him away, but his younger brother, Arliss likes Old
Yeller and Mama thinks he would be good for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Afterall, he had just lost his dog, Bell, to a rattlesnake bite, and the attachment to both Bell and his
father cannot be replaced so soon. With his father gone away for several months and Bell dead at the
fangs of a rattlesnake, Travis has some major adjustments to make in terms of his "internal model of
self." He needs to take on the rolf of a man. He has many conflicting roles to deal with–
disciplinarian to his younger brother, Arliss, only to get scolded by his mother for doing so which
leaves him feeling there is no winning because of the conflict caused by assuming so many roles–
boy, playmate, man, and protector. These conflicts frustrate Travis who thought it was not fair and
thinks to himself, "how could I be the man of the family if nobody paid any attention to what I
thought or said...I sulked and felt sorry for myself all the time...[and] the more I thought of it the
angrier I at got at that big yeller dog." (Gibson 1956). Travis feels offended, too, that Lisbeth turns
out to be a big help. She helps by getting the water and gathering the corn, and has a good time
laughing with Mama and Arliss. It hurts Travis' pride to see him so easily replaced by a girl. He
consoles himself by remembering that he can hunt, mark hogs and swing an axe, and she cannot

Vineland is set in California in 1984, the year of Ronald Reagan's reelection. The story details the
free spirit of rebellion of that decade through flashbacks by its characters. The novel describes the
traits of the fascistic Nixonian repression and its War on Drugs that occurred in U.S. society from
the 1960s to the 1980s. "The central quest is that of a daughter for her absent mother, and while the
process by which the two are united involves an impressive accumulation of information about
international corporate practices and structures, the history of the Left in California, the effects of
Reaganomics and the War on Drugs, and the popular culture of the 1980s, there are no
epistemological impasses or withheld revelations" (Hite 719). ... Show more content on

The tension between satisfying our credulity and satisfying our skepticism, as David Lodge puts it –
differently energises each of Fowles's first three novels. Realism can also be seen as an ancestrally
impure and precautious synthesis of history, romance and allegory; and from this point of view
character is the problematising of the relations between its consistent parts that characterize much
contemporary British fiction including Fowles's. The formal agony and hesitation co–exist; with
immense formal energy and inventiveness in problematic fictions such as Doris Lessing's The
Golden Notebook, Augus Wilson's No Laughing Matters and differently in Iris Murdock's The Black
Prince as well as Fowles's The French Lieutenant's Woman. These novels carry the currently
inescapable and romance theories of insubordination. They leave the reader as Lodge has suggested
with a paradox about the relations between art and life. "The reality principle is never allowed to
lapse entirely–indeed, it is often involved to expose the artificiality of conventional realistic
illusion....This kind of novelistic, I am talking about referring a loyalty to both (reality and fiction)
but later the orthodox novelists and confidence on the possibility of reconciling them. He makes the
difficulty of the task, in a sense, his subjects" "(Bradbury 105). Fowles belongs to that generation
typified by E.P. Thompson, opting, reaction

Analysis of The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan Essay
Analysis of The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan
John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress is an allegorical story about the Christian religion. It
allegorizes the journey of a Christian into "the Celestial City, which represents heaven. Although
Pilgrim's Progress may seem simple and straightforward, there are many deeper meanings
throughout the whole story. Bunyan uses the names of his characters to signify whom the character
represents in the story, for example, the character Hopeful represents hopefulness, Help represents
people who are willing to help others in need of assistance, Faithful represents people who are
faithful to whatever they are associated with, and the main character, Christian, represents all young

Christian cries out for Faithful to stop and wait so they can be companions along their travel, but
Faithful replies, "No, I am upon my life, and the avenger of blood is behind me" (60). In the story,
the life he is trying to save is his real, tangible life. But his running away from the avenger of blood
to save his "life" actually symbolizes saving Faithful's spiritual life. Because he has sinned and
broken the Ten Commandment, "You shall not kill," he is now being chased by death and if caught,
he will kill Faithful; this death characterizes the death of eternal life and therefore not being able to
enter heaven (Deuteronomy 5:17). In the bible there is a passage that talks about the avenger of
blood and who is he. "This is the provision for the manslayer, who by fleeing there may save his
life. If anyone kills his neighbor unintentionally without having been at enmity with him in time
past…he may flee to one of these cities and save his life; lest the avenger of blood in hot
anger pursue the manslayer and overtake him" (Deuteronomy 19:4–6). Jesus Christ was born
without sin, and never sinned throughout his lifetime. Faithful, however, who although did not try to
kill his neighbor, killed him unintentionally and therefore, sinned. Jesus would never have caused
pain to any living creatures, neither accidentally nor deliberately. This is one example of how
Faithful differs from Christ.
Faith is a large part in a

Hester Prynne Analysis

  • 1. Hester Prynne Analysis John Bunyan once said, "One leak will sink a ship: and one sin will destroy a sinner". Hester Prynne, a tenacious, honest, courageous woman, has committed an irreversible mistake that she will be tormented with, for the rest of her miserable existence. She will be shunned from the rest of her community, only to be accompanied with a constant reminder of the result of her act of love and passion, an act which was also adultery. Her character is revealed through her isolated life with her daughter, Pearl, but will never be forgotten by the scarlet letter upon her bosom. Additionally, Hester Prynne connects to the main themes of the novel, frustration and guilt coagulated with sin by internally struggling with the effects of her sin. ... After many years of public dishonor due to the scarlet letter upon her bosom, Hester Prynne begins to understand that she can utilize this cruel symbol by teaching her Pearl to avoid making the same mistakes as she, "this badge hath taught me,––it daily teaches me,––it is teaching me at this moment,––lessons whereof my child may be the wiser and better, albeit they can profit nothing to myself"(92). Towards the end of the novel, Hester Prynne has another moment of recognition; however, this time, her catharsis comforts her because she feels a sense of achievement and relief when Reverend Dimmesdale, upon the scaffold cries, "Hester Prynne, for my own heavy sin and miserable agony––I withheld myself from doing seven years ago, come hither now, and twine thy strength about me", with this shocking public display, the scarlet letter transforms from a stigma which attracted the world's scorn and bitterness, and becomes something to be sorrowed over, and looked upon with awe (207). From W.D. Howell's viewpoint, Hester comes to the realization that she cannot love Reverend Dimmesdale with the stigma that is manifested within the scarlet letter, so Hester takes the scarlet letter from her bosom, and tosses it. With,"the stigma gone, Hester heaved a long, deep sigh, in which the burden of shame and anguish departed from her spirit" (167). • 3. Research Paper On John Bunyan Books have been a form of entertainment for centuries. Authors from all over the world have been writing books of various lengths and for various ages. In fact, many authors have become famous because of their books. For example, C. S. Lewis has become famous because of his Narnia series, Suzanne Collins because of her The Hunger Games trilogy, and Laura Ingalls Wilder because of her Little House on the Prairie series. Millions upon millions of authors have written millions upon millions of books, but not many can compare to The Pilgrim's Progress, by the famous author, John Bunyan. John Bunyan was born on the November of 1628, in a small village named Elstow, in England. His father's name was Thomas Bunyan, who had a job as a tinker, someone who mends household tools. His mother's name was Margret Bentley, nothing much was known about her. He had two siblings, Margret and Charles Bunyan. His family did not have much money or wealth, but what they had was enough to sustain them and send John Bunyan to school and get an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, John began to preach in the area, disregarding the law that you needed a license to preach. In 1658, he was "accused" for preaching, but nothing serious happened to John. Despite the law and the warning, John kept preaching God's word throughout the area. John did not stop preaching until the year of 1660, when he was arrested and thrown into Bedford Prison. While he was in prison, John wrote books. The titles of these books are Grace Abounding (His Autobiography), Prison Meditations, and The Holy City. The Pilgrim's Progress was begun but was not finished until 1678. In 1672, Charles II removed the law against the "illegal" preachers so John and many others like him, were released and given licenses. Unfortunately, the law only stayed removed for three years. • 5. Similarities Between Everyman And The Pilgrim's Progress Religion has played a significant role in the shaping and molding of human civilization. In the Middle Ages, religion was a core pinnacle that served as a source of guidance and meaning for individuals and the state. The medieval play, Everyman, explores the journey of Everyman to Heaven and the phases he must go through in order to stand before God to give an account of his life. Everyman was written during a time when the Catholic Church's practice of penance was paramount as a means for attaining salvation. The personification of the everyday person and spiritual qualities in this play gives an impressive insight into the trials and victories that are part of the Christian walk on the journey to eternal life. This work embodies the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore I pray you go thither with me To help me make mine account, for saint charity. (338–44) However, he realizes that the people who walk on the narrow path in life are few. Every Christian on a journey to eternal life longs for fellowship in order to have a sense of community and joy. The outcome of life one strives for is to live a rewarding life. God will judge each individual's good and bad deeds when all mankind stands before Him to give an account of their life. The allegorical aspect of the play serves an important role in this scene because it appeals to the common individual through its emphasis on relationship. Everyman's longing for a friend is an inherent desire of every Christian because it gives them a sense of community while seeking purpose and meaning in life. In his article, "The Doctrine of Friendship in Everyman," John Conley says, "In his hour of adversity Everyman turns first to Fellowship, who like a true friend readily promises to help before he knows what will be asked of him...But as soon as Fellowship learns what Everyman wants of him, he reneges on his promise" (376). Here, Friendship appears to be a nice and loyal friend on the surface; however, as the layers are removed, his true character is revealed. As ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. John Bunyan’s Pilgrime's Progress Essay Many people wonder what it would be like to go from a dangerous city where they live and journey to a plentiful heaven. This storyline is portrayed in John Bunyan's allegorical book, Pilgrim's Progress. This fascinating story describes the life of Christian, a married man living in the City of Destruction, who longs to travel to the Celestial City. As Christian struggles to stay on the right, though more difficult path, I fight to focus in school and not pay attention to distracting ideas. I also fight to get strong enough in dance to become a professional dancer, just as Christian has to climb the Hill of Difficulty to get to the Palace Beautiful. However, I stood strong and said no, my homework was more important to me than chatting. In the end, I realized that by focusing on what I knew was right, I set a good example for other people to follow. While some of my friends were mad at me, and questioned me for what I had chosen, I soon realized that taking my path would show others how being faithful towards a goal made life easier for me to follow God. In order for Christian to reach the Palace Beautiful, he has to climb the Hill of Difficulty. In the same way, I had to focus on my faith in order to become stronger person of God. Similarly, Christian discusses how the better way to go was the most difficult way versus the two other easy, but deathly paths: "Better, though difficult, the Right Way to go, Than Wrong, though easy, where the End is Woe" (Bunyan 53). Formalist and Hypocrisy both take the easier paths, but they end up in a deadly trap. While Christian struggles to get up the Hill of Difficulty, he makes it to the Palace alive. In the same manner, I struggled to focus on my faith, school, and dance all at once. Even though it was harder to stay strong in my faith, I learned that I soon became a stronger person of God. I chose to take a special Bible class in which I had an hour to focus on the Bible and my faith. This helped me towards my life goal to realize that focusing on one goal can often get me to my ... • 11. The Pilgrim 's Progress By John Bunyan The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan is one of the most famous books in English literature and the Protestant religion. It has been translated into more languages than any other book in existence besides the Bible. He writes the story intricately, with many descriptive details, which causes the story to seem almost life–like. The story can be enjoyed by people of any religion or belief. It showcases Bunyan's poetic prowess, and his intellect as a writer, and this is why it is regarded as one of the greatest books of all time. To begin with, an allegory is a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one, in this case a religious one. The majority of the characters in the story, all have adjectives as names, which seems peculiar. But, as the story goes on the characters seem to fit the meaning of their name or sometimes it is blatantly stated in the story. The story can be confusing, irrational, and real, just like an actual dream. The phrase "delivered under the similitude of a dream" means that the story is described in so much depth, that the details seem almost illusional, hazy and dream–like. Subsequently, the Interpreter is Christian's source of spiritual guidance, resembling a pastor or youth group leader in today's world. It shows that because, the instance that Christian enters his home the interpreter teaches him many lessons in the sense of a parable, exactly the way Jesus would do it. In a sense, ... • 13. The Pilgrim's Progress Essay The Pilgrim's Progress The author of The Pilgrim's Progress is well described by Coleridge's remark: "His piety was baffled by his genius; and Bunyan the dreamer overcame the Bunyan of the conventicle." This remark points out the difficulty that Bunyan faces when he attempts to write a religious piece of work in the style of allegory. The Pilgrim's Progress is "pious" because it is a piece written in dedication to God. It contains important religious teachings –– what a good Christian should do and what he should not do. What Coleridge means by Bunyan's "genius" is basically the story itself. The story is so well written that people become so interested in the story and forget the whole spiritual truth behind and this worry Bunyan. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People at his time indulged in plays and drama for purely earthly pleasure. This is opposed by the Puritans since it is regarded as a kind of corruption and that one could be extracted from the direction to God. But Bunyan justified that if these things are done for God, they could be accepted. The phrase "I have used similitudes" that appeared at the original cover–page of the book explains the use of similes, metaphors and other figures of language. God Himself also speaks in figurative language, not in plain language. Bunyan is going to use similitude to tell the Christians what they should do. It is therefore not for pure enjoyment to read this book. The aim of this book is to teach a religious lesson and ask people to learn from it. Bunyan went on to justify what he did by saying that God had allowed him to do so. He clarified that he was not writing to please anyone and that it should never be used as a way to show off one's ability. He also reminded people that they had to interpret the Bible for themselves for God is not always clear in what he says. The story opens as a dream and this is significant because it is the way that God speaks to his prophets. Bunyan somehow felt himself like a modern version of prophet and he is determined to write about his vision. The word "I" has been used at the opening of the story and all throughout, and this is significant since this "I" (the dreamer) can be anyone of us. There is a strong sense of ... • 17. Analysis Of John Updike 's ' Araby ' John Updike 's penchant for appropriating great works of literature and giving them contemporary restatement in his own fiction is abundantly documented––as is the fact that, among his favorite sources, James Joyce looms large.[1] With special affinity for Dubliners, Updike has, by common acknowledgment, written at least one short story that strongly resembles the acclaimed "Araby," not only in plot and theme, but in incidental detail. That story, the 1960 "You 'll Never Know, Dear, How Much I Love You"––like "Araby"––tells the tale of a poor, romantically infatuated young boy who, though obstructed by parental slowness, journeys with innocent urgency, coins in hand, to a seemingly magical carnival–– only to find there, behind its facades, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The self–delusion in both cases leads quickly to an emotional fall. At 19, Updike 's protagonist, Sammy, is a good bit older than Joyce 's––at the opposite end of adolescence, it would seem. While in Joyce 's boy we readily believe such confusion between the gallant and profane, I think we needn 't assume that Sammy is likewise unable to distinguish between the two quite normal impulses. His attraction to the girl in the aisle is certainly far more anatomically and less ambiguously expressed than that of Joyce 's boy to Mangan 's sister. But it is Beauty that confounds the issue. When human aesthetics come into play, when the object of a young man 's carnal desire also gratifies him aesthetically, that is when the confusion arises. in Irish– Catholic Dublin of the 1890s,[3] such youthful beauty not surprisingly invokes analogies between Mangan 's sister and the Queen of Heaven (though the swinging of her body and "the soft rope of her hair toss[ing] from side to side" [Joyce 30]), which captivate the boy, hint at something less spiritual than Madonna worship). And while beauty 's benchmarks in Sammy 's more secular mid– century America are more anatomical than spiritual, Updike does have Sammy call his young femme fatal "Queenie," and he does make her the center of a "trinity" of sorts, showing her two friends at one point "huddl[ing] against her for relief" ("A & P" 189). It has been read and loved dearly by people throughout the world, due to the fact that it has been printed in over 200 languages and is considered the first novel in English. A lot attributes to this popularity. The storyline, characters, and plot are all adventurous and easy to get sucked into, leading to readers being unable to put the book down. However, the greatest strength this book has is its use of metaphors and imagery. These two traits allow great storytelling and teach quite a lot to readers everywhere. This would have led to his death had Evangelist not turned him around. He also manages to overcome temptation by staying on the path as well as remembering scripture and trusting in the Lord. Throughout the temptations, Christian overcomes with the help of God. Christian's burden and the things surrounding it represent much. It is the object that made Christian yearn for a better life and started him on his journey. It represents sin. • 21. A Rake's Progress Essay William Hogarth is a name well known from the 18th century as one of the best artists for his work A Rake's Progress. Despite his background that emerged from unsuccessful parents he did not follow that trend for he used his thoughts about society to create works of life–sized paintings that became so popular that he pushed for the Copyright Act of 1735 ("National Gallery Website"). Hogarth created A Rake's Progress in 1733 that contains the main character, Tom Rakewell, within the borders of Britain and Bedlam, London to reflect the madness of the 18th century. The Progressive Era Of Social And Political Reform During the time from the 1890s to the 1920s a period of social and political reform took place in the United States known as the Progressive Era. "The era saw the expansion of political and economic freedom through the reinvigoration of the moment for woman suffrage, the use of political power to expand workers rights' and efforts to improve democratic government by weakening the power of the city bosses and giving ordinary citizens more influence on legislation." The progressive reformers from this time gained a majority of their support from the education middle–class of urban areas. Another term used to describe these reformers is Muckrakers. Muckrakers were investigative journalists who tried to make the public aware of the problems in society that needed fixing. They stemmed from yellow journalism, which was a style of reporting that used exaggeration to attract readers. In a speech made by U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906, the term muckraker was used in a derogatory way, he " borrowed the word from John Bunyan 's Puritan story Pilgrim 's Progress, which spoke of a man with a "Muck–rake in his hand" who raked filth rather than look up to nobler things." However, it eventually came to take on a positive overtone due to the serious social issues of the progressive era the muckrakers had underlined. • 25. An Analysis of The Pilgrim’s Progress Essay A question has arisen concerning the conflicts used in John Bunyan's The Pilgrims Progress; the first half of the book was originally published in sixteen seventy–eight while the second half was published in sixteen eighty–four. Guilt, deception, shame, and fear are all major conflicts the author uses that challenge the main characters, Christian and Christiana, on their journey to the celestial city. Perhaps the hardest conflict Bunyan has Christian and his wife face is guilt. John Bunyan's books have been some of the most popular books in Christian society. The novel itself has even been called second to the bible. (Second is referring to the number of copies that have been sold.) While the book itself has Christian represent "an ... Pilgrim's Progress uses hymns as a foreshadowing event alluding to a minor character's demise or a good event. John Bunyan starts the book off as if the narrator is sleeping and has a dream. He also uses imagery from the bible which includes the celestial city and the river of death. Bunyan grew up in a home that was poor but he still had a love for the gospel. At one point in his life he was arrested for preaching the gospel without being licensed to preach. The story is written in first person so it is read like the story is being told to the reader. The limitations of the narrator would most likely be that he is not able to describe the feelings of the dream characters with enough accuracy. The reason for this is the narrator is experiencing a dream but he is not actually feeling the feelings that the dream character is feeling. The language of the book itself started off in old English but has been updated throughout the ages so that it is in modern English. A limitation the narrator has is he does not know what will happen in the future and he cannot influence the outcome of the story. An example of symbolism would be the burden that Christian has to carry on part of his journey. His burden represents the sins that he has committed and the burden will only fall ... What Is The Character Of Paraclete In The Pilgrim's Progress Throughout Christian's journey in The Pilgrim's Progress, he encounters many dilemmas which often throw him off the path to the Celestial city. However, whenever someone is with him or aids him, he prevails and acquires more and more wisdom. If he has a constant guide or companion in his journey, it will be less probable for Christian to stumble or get lost. John Bunyan should incorporate the character "Paraclete" into his book, The Pilgrim's Progress, because he will provide help in times of trouble, he will encourage Christian to overcome obstacles, and he will grant Christian someone to talk to and travel with. The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan tells the story of Christian, a deeply religious man whose self–imposed pilgrimage takes him through a variety of locations in his quest to reach Celestial City. However, to better understand Bunyan's perspective on Christianity as given in his novel, we must examine the life experiences of the author. Born in 1628, Bunyan lived in a time period that was undoubtedly heavily influenced by the Reformation movement incited by Martin Luther only a century earlier. The lives of Luther and Bunyan parallel in that both disagreed with fundamental doctrines applied by the Church in their lifetime. Additionally, both were labeled as dissenters and subsequently persecuted for adhering to their own principles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Christian initially accepts this suggestion, for he is told by Mr. Worldly–Wiseman that Legality is a man who is known for his good works (Bunyan, 19). Christian them embarks on the trip to the Village of Morality, but in transit he encounters a hill that proved an insurmountable obstacle, along with the reappearance of Evangelist who shames him for trusting in the earthly qualities of morality and legality (Bunyan, 20–22). Therein we see confirmation of the notion that justification is by faith alone. For Christian, via the instruction and teachings of Evangelist, discards the knowledge and virtues of the concepts of morality and legality as nothing more than a fruitless diversion in comparison to seeking the Celestial City (Bunyan, 22). Second, we see the concept of justification by faith alone supported by the definition of By–ends as a hypocrite and his ill–fated end. When By–ends first meets Christian, he was hesitant to reveal his name. He then admits he differs in Religion from those of the stricter sort in that he abides by two rules. He does not strive against Wind and Tide, and that he is most zealous when Religion goes in his Silver Slippers, but not in his rags (Bunyan, 98). In depression era America, no greater truth could be said. There were millions unemployed, largely unskilled and living on the margins of society. The lowest of the low were the migrant labourers travelling from place to place trying to scratch a living. They often had to travel illegally by freight car with all its consequent dangers. Profound Truth Oppression does not always come from the strong and powerful. In Steinbeck 's world, the weak prey on the weaker–for example, Curley 's wife threatens to have Crook 's lynched. The alienation of the worker or the unemployed is very evident. The ethics are ‘dog eat dog '–a total lack of regard for the dignity of the human person. The struggle of Labour to regain its dignity is best exemplified in Steinbeck 's ‘In Dubious Battle '. Motifs 1. A man only world 2. The Corrupting Power of Women 3. Loneliness 4. Comparing The Pilgrim 's Progress And Paradise Lost Comparing The Pilgrim's Progress and Paradise Lost, Two Works Focused on Salvation Two influential pieces of English literature, both focusing on the topic of salvation, are The Pilgrim's Progress, written by John Bunyan in 1678 (2269), and Paradise Lost, composed in the previous decade by poet John Milton in 1667 (1945). While these two works both pay special attention to mankind's preoccupation with being saved, they differ vastly from one another in the language and literary style used in each respective piece, the way in which salvation itself is portrayed, and also in how the salvation of each story's characters is determined through their resistance to temptation and the state of their relationship with God. Before even mentioning the content of the works themselves, it becomes immediately evident that the writing styles of The Pilgrim's Progress and Paradise Lost are near polar opposites of one another. For example, in The Pilgrim's Progress, author John Bunyan writes in a simple prose style, which is relatively easy for most to comprehend. In contrast, John Milton, in Paradise Lost, employs a complicated, original poetic style that is the first of its kind. After reading it and trying to interpret what it was saying I decided that I could actually relate more to this story than I realized through my faith as a follower of Jesus Christ. John Bunyan uses a dream of the main character, Christian, to describe a life changing event for Christian to grow spiritually while traveling and meeting new people and having first time experiences. The Pilgrims Progress is an allegory to the Bible and Christianity that portrays what we as Christians believe in. Bunyan uses the pilgrimage of Christian to express this allegory using the experiences and people Christian comes into contact with to explore the struggles and challenges of life on earth Christians faces daily when seeking eternal life. The first challenge Christian faces is his guilt. As a Christian, I was always taught right from wrong according to the Bible and when I am in the wrong for something, I feel guilty because I know it is wrong and that it is not necessarily how God wants me to live my life or what he wants from me. The guilt arises because I am promised eternal greatness after my life here on earth as long as I believe in Jesus Christ and I continue to strive to be a Christian, and well lets face it, who would not feel guilty being promised such an amazing thing in exchange for being a good person and following the biblical scripture of Christ. Six years later the declaration of indulgence was passed and Bunyan was freed. In 1676, Bunyan went back to prison for not attending the parish. During his year in prison Bunyan continued writing The Pilgrim's Progress. Six years after he was released from prison, he published The Pilgrim's Progress. This book is about someone named Christian who is going to the Celestial City. There are many obstacles in his way. These obstacles were similar to the landscape where he lived. The other characters were also reflections of real people. Hence, John Bunyan's life was a rollercoaster of emotions. Although his childhood was very iniquitous, he repented and surpassed his childhood. He also wrote many great books during his lifetime. I am inspired by John Bunyan to become more ... The play is trying to tell the reader that in this time of day, the media and the common people are so easily brainwashed by current events that the media will praise criminals, this even happens in the media today. Act 2 starts with Amos finding out about Roxie's pregnancy, but while he is calling out for attention to let everyone know that he is the dad, no one notices him like he is invisible. After Roxie returns back to prison with all of the attention on her, she has a huge argument with Billy because Roxie thinks that she is calling all the shots now because she came up with the idea of being pregnant to get her back on the publicity train. Roxie then fires Billy thinking she can do everything on her own, later to realize that a woman was executed without a lawyer. Roxie then freaks out and calls Billy to have him be her lawyer again. Before Bunyan wrote Pilgrim's Progress, he wrote his spiritual autobiography, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners. In this book, he tells of his conversion and many of his struggles before and after. There are many similarities between Bunyan's experiences in Grace Abounding and in what he wrote about in Pilgrim's Progress: Bunyan's and Christian's (the main character in Pilgrim's Progress) journey to salvation was very similar, Bunyan and Christian had similar experiences concerning God's promises, and the man in the iron cage (in Pilgrim's Progress) represents a situation Bunyan went through when he thought he could not be saved. In Pilgrim's Progress, he writes of Christian and Hopeful straying from the right path. They were captured by the giant, Despair, and thrown into his dungeon where they were deprived of food, water, and light. The giant threatened to kill them and tempted them to take their own lives. Nearly overcome with despair, they were tempted to do this when Christian remembered he had a key called Promise. In the story, Christian travels out of the city only to find that the path is almost as treacherous as the city itself. First he falls into the Bog named the Slough of Despond. The Slough is not only very hard to see, but the way though the bog is hidden from all travelers. In the Story, Help describes the slough as being desolate because of the fears, doubts, and discouraging apprehensions that come to a sinner who is enlightened (Bunyan 23). John Bunyan clearly illustrates a path that is hard to follow because leaving sin is one of the hardest things to do. Bunyan confirms that he believes that sin is hard to leave by telling us of his early hardships with temptations. "The temptations of sin became so overwhelming" that Bunyan felt like selling his soul to the devil and after trying to say no he gave into Satan (Abrams 2134–2137). Then later in the Journey to the Cross, Bunyan also uses the character named World to describe the many other hardships that come along the trail. "Thou art like to meet with in the way which thou goest wearisomeness, painfulness, hunger, perils, nakedness, sword, lions, dragons, darkness and in a word, death and what not?" (Bunyan 25). Clearly Bunyan wants to show that the condition of man is terrible because of the awful problem of sin that pulls every person away from God. • 54. Pilgrim 's Progress By John Bunyan 1) Pilgrim 's Progress by John Bunyan is an infamous Christian allegory and wildly considered to be the first great book of the non–secular English language. After the Bible, it was the most read book for centuries. Bunyan wrote it based on his largely Baptist, often Calvinist theology. This is evident in Pilgrim 's Progress through the name choices of the main characters and his conversation with Ignorance regarding reaching the Celestial City. The major points which are total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistible grace, and perseverance of saints. Total depravity states that all mean are inherently sinners, unconditional election entails that certain people were predestined to receive God 's grace no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Christian tries to correct him and explain that there is only one way to the Celestial City, and his deeds do not matter. Due to the doctrines of Predestination and Total Depravity, Christian is correct under Calvinism. Since Ignorance is inherently a sinner, and not elect, he is unable to accept God 's grace and enter the Celestial City by means of his own path according to the concept of Total Depravity. However, one way that Pilgrim 's Progress contradicts Calvinist theory is when Christian is reading his bible at the very beginning and confesses to his family that he is worried for their safety because fire from Heaven will soon obliterate the city that they live in and he doesn 't know how to save them. This is contradictory to Calvinism because Christian should inherently know that he cannot. Since God has preordained everything that will ever happen, Christian cannot save his family unless that was already been in God 's plan. Pilgrim 's Progress largely exemplifies Calvinist ideology throughout the text with each new character that Christian meats. Bunyan made his viewpoint very clear every everyone of his literary decisions from what the characters shall be named to how they go about their journeys. Although there are a few nuances that seem less than Calvinistic, such as Christian 's worries at the beginning, for the most part it stats true to the Calvin course. 2) ... • 56. Epic in A Piligrim's Progress by John Bunyan and Heart of... What is an epic? What does a piece of literature need in order to be considered an epic? An epic is a journey that the protagonist takes in order to find who they are themselves. A Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan and Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad are two pieces of literature in which this appears. However, A Pilgrim's Progress: Part One is more of a dream journey while Heart of Darkness is an actual physical journey. Both of these novels however follow the standard pattern of an epic in how they are both journey's in which the person comes to an understanding of themselves which sometimes and sometimes does not end up saving him. A Pilgrim's Progress: Part One is a novel that follows the structure of an epic in many different ways. For one, as even stated in the novel, Christian's journey is a dream journey. Another way is how at the beginning of the novel the protagonist Christian has a large burden on his back that he can not take off. This burden causes him to have the conviction that he has many sins and is therefore in need of saving so he goes on a pilgrimage in order to be saved. This follows the epic structure of being a young, naive man who goes on a journey in order to obtain an understanding of himself. Throughout Christian's journey he faces many challenges but also is helped by various people too. Another part of the epic structure is the young man's journey through the underworld or hell. • 60. Reflection About Suffering Introduction Christians know other Christians are prone to suffering. Non–Christians I have spoken to believe that Christians have a happy life. Non–believers believe we do not endure suffering simply because in their reality, God is personified as a genie; Christians can simply pray for what they desire in life; examples including money, power, wealth, and the Lord will grant those desires immediately. However, Christians know suffering is inevitable. From a theological standpoint, suffering is defined as: "the experience of physical pain and mental distress."("suffering") If individuals were to evaluate suffering from a Christian perspective, we must realize categories that come with suffering. First, suffering is the consequence of the flawed nature of creation. Second, suffering is the direct consequence of one's violation of God's laws. Third, suffering can be good for our faith, and finally suffering is embedded in truth, Christianity, and within the church. Historical Development Before looking at the categories which formulate suffering, I would like to look at Christian authors who agreed with my categories of suffering and who also sparked my inspiration for evaluating suffering from a believer's viewpoint. The first author is John Bunyan. His book, The Pilgrim's Progress tells the story of Christian, a pilgrim who journeys from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City. The City of Destruction emulates the world; Celestial City heaven. Christian was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The novella shows the relationship between the protagonists, George and Lennie, and showing how they try to achieve the American Dream by working together. This is in contrast to many of the other characters who are alone by themselves which seems to be the norm at the time of the Great Depression. The reader is able to look at how the need to have a companion is portrayed by Steinbeck, especially during the harsh economic times that the story is set in. The reliance that George and Lennie have on one another is able to emphasise on how it is only the friendship between the two of them which allows them to survive. • 64. Ability 's Inability ( Rough Draft ) Ability's Inability (Rough Draft) When considering Christian allegories that have been written through the years, one has stood out from the rest. This piece of literature has stood the test of time and remained beloved by many readers. In "Class Formation, Politics, Structures of Feeling" Geoff Eley states "Pilgrim 's Progress is, with Rights of Man, one of the two foundational texts of the English working–class movement: Bunyan and Paine, with Cobbett and Owen, contributed most to the stock of ideas and attitudes which make up the raw material of the movement from 1790–1850" (Eley 217). The Pilgrim's Progress was written by John Bunyan in February of 1678. At the time, Bunyan titled it "The Pilgrim 's Progress from This World to That Which Is to Come; Delivered under the Similitude of a Dream". In modern publications of the work, Bunyan's sequel to the work titled simply "Pilgrim's Progress, Part II" has been added at the end of the original tale. Although the two tales were not originally published back to back, reading them one after the other shows the striking differences between them. Bunyan specifically used different events, people, and circumstance in the two different parts to symbolically show how Christian life can vary greatly depending upon the individual. John Bunyan's readers wanted the story in The Pilgrim's Progress to continue beyond the original tale. • 66. A Stranger Essay : Kindness To A Stranger Kindness to a Stranger It was a chilly evening in Southern Virginia many years ago. There was the old man whose beards were glazed by the winter's frost, as he hopelessly waited for a ride across the river. Due to the frigid north wind, his body was numb and stiff. Edward, who was passing by saw this desperate old man, who looked so confused and helpless. He asked the old man, "what are you doing here at this late hour?" The freezing man answered, "I am waiting for a ride to take me home." Edward took some time with the old man, as they waited for a ride to take him to the next side of the river. The wait seemed endless and ineffective. However, they both heard the faint, steady rhythm of approaching hooves dashing along the icy path. Anxiously, the old man and Edwin watched as several riders curved the bend. He let the first one pass without seeking attention from him. Apparently, Edward was very annoyed, asking him the reason for not stopping the passing horseman. The man kept quiet as he checked out on whether there was another one coming. The another one passed by, followed by other two. When Edward saw that the old man was not using any effort to seek help from either of the riders, he was tired and decided to leave the old man alone. After a while, the last horseman by the name John Denis neared the spot where the old man had sat like a snow statue. Crooks is a very good representation of a victim of one of the worst qualities in humans – racism. He also represents how some people may react to such mistreatment. He shows how the cruelty to victims can change them and cause them to feel lonely and sometimes angry in Crooks' case. 'I can't play because I'm black.' This shows how racist people exclude him from activities and such like just because he is black in colour showing racial prejudice. Crooks also expresses the intolerance shown towards him by other people when he says 'If I say something, why it's just a nigger sayin' it.' Another example of the discrimination is when Candy compliments his room and crooks replies in the tone of sarcasm, 'Sure, and a manure pile under the window.' His living conditions also show the lack of respect towards Crooks – his ' bunk was a long box filled with hay.' Although Crooks has to live in this way, John Steinbeck writes how he takes it and gets on with it. 'He kept his distance and demanded that other people kept theirs. Crooks also shows his loneliness – Sometimes he gets thinkin', an' he got nothing to tell him what's so an' what ain't so.' He needs to take on the rolf of a man. He has many conflicting roles to deal with– disciplinarian to his younger brother, Arliss, only to get scolded by his mother for doing so which leaves him feeling there is no winning because of the conflict caused by assuming so many roles– boy, playmate, man, and protector. Analysis of The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan Essay Analysis of The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress is an allegorical story about the Christian religion. It allegorizes the journey of a Christian into "the Celestial City, which represents heaven. Although Pilgrim's Progress may seem simple and straightforward, there are many deeper meanings throughout the whole story. Bunyan uses the names of his characters to signify whom the character represents in the story, for example, the character Hopeful represents hopefulness, Help represents people who are willing to help others in need of assistance, Faithful represents people who are faithful to whatever they are associated with, and the main character, Christian, represents all young ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Christian cries out for Faithful to stop and wait so they can be companions along their travel, but Faithful replies, "No, I am upon my life, and the avenger of blood is behind me" (60). In the story, the life he is trying to save is his real, tangible life. But his running away from the avenger of blood to save his "life" actually symbolizes saving Faithful's spiritual life. Because he has sinned and broken the Ten Commandment, "You shall not kill," he is now being chased by death and if caught, he will kill Faithful; this death characterizes the death of eternal life and therefore not being able to enter heaven (Deuteronomy 5:17). In the bible there is a passage that talks about the avenger of blood and who is he. "This is the provision for the manslayer, who by fleeing there may save his life. If anyone kills his neighbor unintentionally without having been at enmity with him in time past…he may flee to one of these cities and save his life; lest the avenger of blood in hot anger pursue the manslayer and overtake him" (Deuteronomy 19:4–6). Jesus Christ was born without sin, and never sinned throughout his lifetime. Faithful, however, who although did not try to kill his neighbor, killed him unintentionally and therefore, sinned. Jesus would never have caused pain to any living creatures, neither accidentally nor deliberately. This is one example of how Faithful differs from Christ. Faith is a large part in a ...
