Persuasive Essay On Electric Cars
Electric Energy Op Ed Rough Draft How would you like to never have to pay for gas again? With gas prices always changing you never know how
much money you are going to be feeding to the pump. By trading your car in for an electric powered car, gas will be one less thing to stress about.
By making this change you can save the money that you would be spending on your gas guzzling car and put it towards something else. There are
many types of electric cars to choose from, ranging from the standard Nissan Leaf at $30,000 to the luxury BMW i8 at $145,000. Not only would
you be saving yourself time and money by going electric, but you would also be taking a stride towards a better planet. With the supply of fossil
fuels steadily declining, gas and oil is becoming harder to harvest which means it is getting more expensive. Fossil fuels take millions of years to be
naturally produced, yet each person burns gallons of gas per day (Maehlum par. 5). Though fossil fuels are produced naturally, when burned they
release nitrogen oxides gases into the atmosphere, which contributes to the formation of smog and acid rain. According to the EPA, major sources of
these nitrogen oxide emissions come from cars and trucks, coal–fire powered plants, large industrial operations, and ships and airplanes (EPA par 3).
By reducing the number of gas powered cars on the road, we can reduce the amount of harmful chemicals we are releasing into our atmosphere. Gas
powered cars do not only effect our air,

Environmental Change : The Environmental Effects Of...
Climate change is known worldwide and the environmental effects on our planet cannot be disregarded. Understanding the distinction among climate
and weather is imperative in understanding how certain variables add to the change of temperature. These variables can include natural causes of the
Earth's decay over time, however, scientists are well aware that human error and our daily lifestyles contribute to the poor conditions that our earth is
falling into. When humans just started to exist on Earth, human impacts on the environment occurred in only a minimal and insignificant quantity. This
occurred because of small populations and the absence of innovation and technology around them. When humans adjusted to the environment and
figured out how to expand and humans became inventors, and innovators, the population started to develop and future expanded. However, not all that
we as humans invent and contribute to our society is clean, or natural. Some of it can be toxic, and some of it can be harmful to our atmosphere and
our homes. By the present guidelines, individuals living past the age of eighty years of age, is a noteworthy achievement for humankind. Fuller lives
from the inhabitants of earth implies that more assets from the earth will be used. However, this is not suggesting that we as humans should not want
to lives longer lives. It suggests that we as humans should live smarter, cleaner, fuller lives. The cleaner we are as humans, and use the lowest amount

Corn Ethanol : Good Or Bad?
Corn–Ethanol: Good or Bad? Are you tired of paying those high fuel prices at the pump every time you go to fill up your vehicle? The ever–rising
price for a barrel of foreign oil has most American citizens really watching where they drive. A majority of the people is not aware that there is an
alternative to the problem. It is startling to think that there is a fuel source here on our own soil that most people pass everyday and do not even think
about it. That fuel source is called corn–ethanol, and a majority of people can see the main ingredient, which is, corn in America 's farm fields. Corn
is grown annually and it does not take millions of years to reproduce. Oil is a fuel source that takes millions of years to reproduce. Abiofuel is the
process of taking any once living plant and abstracting the plant 's energy to make a fuel. People in America are supporting Biofuels, including
corn–ethanol because it does not require oil. It also reduces green house gasses, which makes it better for the environment (Cassman 59). The common
view of ethanol is that it is just a research project to make the environmentalists happy but that is not true. It has the potential to keep America 's
economy rolling, supply a fuel source, and still feed livestock with its byproducts. The key to success as a country is to use what we already have an
abundance of in this country. The evidence is all there for this argument many Americans just need to become educated about this topic. The main

The Negative Effects of Automobile Emissions Pollution Essay
The Negative Effects of Automobile Emissions Pollution
Charles Dickens wrote about the dirty conditions of London, England by saying, "Smoke lowering down from chimney pots, making a soft black
drizzle, with flakes of soot in it as big as full–grown snowflakes – gone into mourning, one might imagine, for the death of the sun . . . Fog everywhere
. . . fog down the river, where it rolls defiled among the tiers of shipping, and the waterside pollutions of a great (and dirty) city" (Qtd. Langone 28).
The problem with the air back in Dickens' day was all of the coal that was burned for heat and power. Today, we do not often use coal in our individual
homes or businesses, but we still have a big problem with our air. Automobiles are our... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Very Unhealthful level advises people to avoid outdoor activity and people with heart and lung problems should stay indoors and avoid all
activity. At this level, there are widespread irritation symptoms among the healthy population. The last level, Hazardous, can cause many serious
health problems, including the early onset of disease. It advises that everyone should stay indoors with all doors and windows shut and avoid physical
activity of any kind. This level can also cause premature death in the ill and elderly (EPA 4).
The negative effects of automobile emissions pollution were recognized long ago. The Department of Health, Education and Welfare estimated in the
late 1950's that nationwide, cars contribute 48 percent of the carbon monoxide, 4 percent of the sulfur dioxide, 32 percent of the nitrogen oxides, 59
percent of hydrocarbons and 8 percent of the particulate matter in our atmosphere. With all of these figures together, it meant that the automobile was
by far the nations largest polluter, being responsible for 43 percent of all air pollution (Patterson 6). These numbers were staggering and brought many
people to the opinion that something had to be done.
The effects of this pollution were seen and felt most heavily in large cities. By 1960, the air in and around Los Angeles was so bad that the state
government was forced to take action. The main problem for LA was the photochemical smog,

Citizen Level Problem
Citizen Level Problem: With limited resources, comes a high cost of living, therefore causing the poverty line to increase. When oil is not in
abundance, the cost of oil will rise. Oil is used to transport goods from different parts of the world. The rising of oil and gas prices will reflect in the
price increase of our food found in local markets. Because of the higher cost of food, there will be a lot of people struggling to live a stable lifestyle.
With insufficient vitamins, we may find many people – especially children– with malnutrition. A daily amount of nutrition is important for our growing
population and future generations. Another possible problem is that there could be more homeless people in the area, or we may see residents leaving
to move to another state. Our middle class citizens would have a difficult time regularly going to and from work. Even public bus transit costs... Show

Emergency vehicles will suffer such as police cars, ambulances, fire trucks, and other rescue vehicles. The problem caused by a lack of oil is the
decrease in the productivity of the state. Cities and roads will need to build and maintain over the years, which can't be done without oil as the primary
energy resource. When roads and buildings cannot be maintained, the foundation of the state can result in disasters, potentially damaging any prospect
of value in this state. The state's military may cost the state more by the amount of security and defense it sustains. By reducing the amount of soldiers,
the state may be vulnerable to an attack. The coast guard may reduce the quantity of its patrols, and consequently lose a ship to its unfortunate demise.
All of this may cause the government to raise its taxes, thus, creating more unhappy citizens. If oil has been a large enough crisis, then people may
move out of state, and create more problems for the state by not making enough

History of Chemistry: Hydrogen as an Alternative Use of...
In this paper I am going to be talking, about how the element hydrogen when chemically broken down can produce enough power to run things like,
cars, planes, helicopter, etc... which is chemistry in technology. Right now most everyone is very heavily dependent on the use of fossil fuels and the
search for alternative fuel sources are starting to pick up. One of the leading sources of fuel being tested is the use of hydrogen as an alternative fuel.
One of the disadvantages is that hydrogen is only found in a handful of locations. They have already started to integrate it into natural day to day
living like the power plant in Italy, many car companies are starting on designs of hydrogen powered cars. I feel that the use of hydrogen as an ... Show

Water is very plentiful it makes up 75 percent of the Earth and you can use water ornatural gas, which is also very plentiful, to break down the
hydrogen into a useable fuel. Because it is so abundant they can make and deliver it in large quantities that are competitive with the gas prices that
we have today. The use of hydrogen as a power source is already being implicated in day to day life they use it to power buses, cars, scooters,
forklifts. NASA even uses it to power some of its space ships. NASA has been using Hydrogen in its liquid status to lift its rockets into space. The
fuel cells power the shuttle's electrical systems, producing a clean byproduct, water which the crew drinks. It is a lot cleaner then fossil fuels
because it does not have the harmful eminences that fossil fuels have. Chevy has already produced a car that runs off hydrogen, the Equinox, the
fuel cell car is an electric vehicle that converts hydrogen and oxygen into electricity which it uses to power the vehicle. A few big car companies,
Ford, Mercedes, and Nissan, are pulling together to produce a hydrogen powered car that would only emit water by 2017. The use of hydrogen is
still in the early steps of becoming the main source of power because people have such a heavy dependence on oil it hasn't really gone out on a big
stage to effect the whole world. It will soon though because

The Car and Society Essay
The Car and Society
The automobile has had a tremendous impact on society and the environment since its development in the beginning of the 20th century. Today, there
are over 500 million motor vehicles on the earth. The automobile's efficiency, style, and performance have changed over the years, but there is one
thing that has not – the pollution the automobile generates. Because of the pollution, people find themselves asking whether this technology has helped
our society or hurt it. Should the consequences of the automobile be cause to eliminate it? Or should science develop technology to eliminate the
pollution caused by the car?
Some people believe that the benefits of the automobile far outweigh the consequences. These people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pollutants that are given off through the emissions of automobiles are hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxides, and carbon dioxides.
Hydrocarbons emitted by automobiles create smog. Smog can create health problems for people. These problems include lung and respiratory
problems. Nitrogen oxides form acid rain that hurts plants, wildlife, and the paint on our cars. Carbon monoxide reduces the flow of oxygen in the
bloodstream. Carbon dioxide is a "greenhouse gas" and is a primary factor contributing to global warming.
Other reasons people are so against cars include the amount of trash cars leave behind. Thousands of acres of our earth are covered with concrete
to create roadways for these automobiles. Millions of automobiles are replaced every year. The owners either get tired of the old car, or want a new
car, or they buy for other reasons. This creates tons of waste. Often cars are just junked or parted out leaving masses of trash everywhere. Highways
lay across millions of miles of our environment. Many habitats were uprooted and covered with concrete. People against cars say that this is not
natural, beautiful or efficient. Roads are not only ugly, but they are expensive. Roads continually need to be repaired.
Scientists and engineers are eagerly trying to come up with some sort of alternative or proposed solutions to the waste the automobile creates. One
proposed solution is the electric car. Electric cars were once thought to be

Who knows, maybe in 10 years, we could actually look into the sky and see a brighter day. Hybrid vehicles are striking the scene in a positive way.
They are becoming the choice vehicle for many buyers. Hybrids are fashionable in both style and status. With more consumers being focused on the
ongoing problem of air pollution, it is not a surprise they are drawn to hybrid vehicle models (Why Hybrids are the vehicles of choice these days, n.d).
Hybrids are easier on the environment as well as one's wallet. The fact that they are designed to be kind to the environment is getting the attention of
many consumers, businesses and governments. The hybrid car is something of mixed origin or composition by definition. A hybrid vehicle is one that
functions with the use of both gasoline engine and electric engine. The gasoline engine is smaller than conventional vehicles, allowing the electric
motor to compensate with energy. A high–voltage battery charges the electric motor when the car is parked. The hybrid vehicles can be operated
using either of the engines or both at the same time. Therefore, it uses less gas. Hybrids also offer a quiet ride. Many people purchased hybrid cars to
save money from the increasingly high price of gasoline. As the cost of gas increases so does the demand on hybrid vehicles. Although

Hydrogen And Its Effects On The Environment
Hydrogen is the most popular on this list, there are many great things about hydrogen such as it is not harmful to the environment, hydrogen is
actually very safe; this is because it uses a chemical process in the fuel cell to use the hydrogen as a fuel, it is much more efficient than gasoline
power, and research has shown that hydrogen can actually clean the environment around them. Nonetheless hydrogen has some major problems such
the fact that it is extremely expensive to pull hydrogen from water making it much more expensive than other renewable resources. Also the pollution
created from making the fuel cells essentially cancels out the benefits of hydrogen. Experts state that "hydrogen that escapes during the production
process could erode the ozone layer even further and exacerbate global warming." (Watson) Researchers also need to find a way to store hydrogen as
it highly flammable compared to gas, and in low density hydrogen has to be transferred under high pressure ––– making the transport very bulky and
impractical. (Watson) Biodiesel is essentially diesel that made from renewable resources. Biodiesel is not used very much in America, however in
countries in Southeast Asian are embracing this alternative fuel source. Biodiesel can be made from a variety of biological organisms such as corn,
grass, or fats. "Biodiesel has a net energy balance of 2.8, with a range of –0.27 to +5.3 based on different assumptions for how to assign energy usage
and by–products."

Final Research Paper – Lotus Rental Cars This paper will focus on preparing an assessment for Lotus Rental Car's Chief Financial Officer on the
feasibility of adding alternative fuel vehicles to the fleet. Although there are many forms of alternative fuel vehicles, this study will primarily focus
on the use of hybrid vehicles at Lotus Rental Cars. We will discuss the background of Lotus Rental Car's current status, the advantages and
disadvantages of adding alternative fuel vehicles, and provide our recommendation on why and how it should be done. Our focus will be on three
specific areas: budget costs, marketing strategy and performance as well as how Lotus Rental Cars will benefit financially from using this new
process in their current fleet. Background Lotus Rental Cars is a national domestic rental car organization operating in several locations within the
United States headquartered in Los Angeles, California. They have been in business for 20 years and are not as well–known among customers as some
of their competitors, such as Budget, Avis and, Enterprise. Lotus Rental Cars uses various vehicles from economy to larger sized vehicles for rental
purchase by their customers for personal or business need. A large concern of the organization is long–term cost savings and developing a better
marketing strategy. The cost of using various vehicles, increased gas prices caused by the economic downturn, and maintenance of these vehicles will

UPS's alternative fuels fleet is in response to growing trends in government and environmental policies along with scientific discoveries in clean
energy. The government launched a National Clean Fleets Partnership aimed at helping businesses incorporate vehicles that run on alternate fuels.
The public private partnership began a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Energy and businesses such as UPS's. Over the years UPS's
has tried different options to achieve cost savings by using fuel efficient alternative vehicles dating back to the 1930's. The first alternative vehicle

With the 2004 discovery of a massive shale gas fields in the Marcellus Shale region of the United States this has caused the price of liquefied natural gas
to drop in price making it a competitive choice to diesel. This information is giving UPS more options to alternative fuels at a price that the company can
afford and still make a profit. UPS continues to test and gather information on alternative fuels that would be best for their business and the
environment. It is important for businesses such as UPS to stay on top of changes in the external environment so they can make the best decisions for
the business. Without the discovery of the shale gas fields UPS would not have the options that they currently do. The business needs to continue to
stay up to date with external environment information to know which alternative fuel technologies will become central over time. UPS will continue
testing new technologies in order to determine which energy source will have the greatest benefit to the business. Sustainability is economic
development that generates wealth and meets the needs of the current population while preserving society and the environment for the needs of future
generations. UPS purchased 48 liquified natural gas engine tractor trailers in 2011, by the

Using Alternative Fuels For Cars
There are many different types of alternate fuels for cars at our disposal, such as Ethanol, Natural Gas, Electricity, and Hydrogen Fuels. We can use
these fuels instead of normal gasoline fuels that pollute our air and contribute to destroying our environment. Many of these alternative fuels may be
less convenient to use, because they are less accessible. However, if people decide to use these fuels then they can make our world a green friendly
world. There this a ton of upside to using alternative fuels, according to Larry West's article on the top eight alternative fuels, as they can help nations
become more energy independent. In addition, there are several downsides or challenges associated with alternative fuels for cars, such as... Show more

At its low price it's much more affordable then most fuels making it a good option. There a lot of positive sides to using ethanol but there an also a
few negative things it can produce when used or even made.
Ethanol is a good alternative fuel but there is negative things that come with it. Ethanol requires a bunch of corn, barley, and wheat to make (Meyers,
2014). Which in turn could be used to feed starving people all over the world. Using corn, barley, and wheat hinders food availability and even the
prices of the food. The new York times has stated that using ethanol actually decreases gas mileage. Ethanol gives you 2–3 miles less than normal
gasoline (West, 2014). Ethanol can also break down faster than normal gasoline. Meaning that ethanol can cause rust of the car engine. Making ethanol
can actually pollute the air a bunch because of all the gasoline it requires to power the tractors and machines that gather the required material to make
it. Ethanol has negative impacts on our environment but overall it has more positives then negatives and makes a good alternative fuel.
Natural Gas is another alternative fuel option that has a bunch of positive sides to it. Using natural gas produces lower negative emissions that pollute
the air. Natural gas produces less smog then your normal gasoline that everyone uses. Natural gas is helping America as a nation to use clean
environmental friendly energy sources. Using natural gas can reduce the probability of

Network Design at Maersk Line is Transforming the World
This necessitated clients to preserve a buffer inventory in the event their consignment didn't arrive on time. "With these figures in hand we could go
to the clients and say, 'Now the voyage will take 23 days, but in exchange we propose a much greater reliability'," says Harling, head of Network
Design at Maersk Line. From 2011 onwards, slow steaming has become a keystone in Maersk Line's offer to its clients: unconditional reliability.
Ultimately, the prophecies of a few enthusiastic employees became realism and transformed the world through teamwork and because of the many
paybacks from slow steaming; Maersk is committed that slow steaming is here to stay.

Maersk Line also applied its large database of fleet performance to enhance how its vessels were run. For instance, this data assisted captains in
fine–tuning speeds and routes established on such elements as weather, tides, and port delays. It also permitted Maersk Line to offer fuel consumption
benchmarks to its crews, so they could see how they equated comparative to the best performers. Fuel efficiency was also connected to reward for
captains. Maersk Line was endlessly enhancing its system of departures, such that vessels were utilized most economically, for instance by fine–tuning

a step ahead of its competition. To continue to set the pace for other rental agencies to follow, and to ensure ABC Rental Cars ' dominant position in
the marketplace, alternative fuel vehicles (AFV), or more specifically, hybrid vehicles, should be evaluated as to the feasibility and consumer interest

As indicated above, these three cars are not only great when it comes to mileage, but another advantage they enjoy is that they are also
environmentally friendly. For example, the Prius produces 90 percent less harmful emissions than a traditional car (www.ineed2know.org, 2004),
which is important to those individuals that are concerned about the environment. Even President Bush seemed to agree that alternative fuel vehicles
needed to be further investigated when he endorsed the concept of alternative fuel vehicles and allocated more than a billion dollars toward the
transition to hydrogen fuels (www.evrental.com, 2001). On the other hand, these types of cars are not a practical investment if cost and availability
are issues. Not only is the price higher, but due to limited interest in hybrids by consumers at this time, there is only a small geographic area where
hybrids are being rented. Most locations are situated in California, Arizona, and Washington; therefore, if ABC Rental Cars is looking for a new rental
opportunity that could expand quickly, hybrid vehicles may not be the ideal choice.
Initial startup costs and maintenance costs are also important factors to consider. The price of a hybridautomobile is higher than that of a comparable
gasoline engine powered automobile. According to the Website ineed2know.org, a consumer can expect to pay from $3,500 to $6,000 more for ahybrid
vehicle. The money a consumer saves in purchasing a hybrid depends

many may think space exploration is a great thing and we should keep progressing in it, space exploration is a waste of time because of the medical
effects to crew members, the countless money we spend on it, the environmental effects, and the dangers of the unknown universe.

Pharmaceutical countermeasures are also being evaluated for their ability to mitigate the harmful effects of space radiation.
Scientific discoveries made by the CSRR will not only enable safe and productive human exploration of space, but may also have the potential to
improve life on Earth. Although this is true, Radiation exposure can lead to many health problems, including acute effects such as nausea, vomiting,
fatigue, skin injury and changes to white blood cell counts and the immune system. LongerВterm radiation effects include damage to the eyes,
gastrointestinal system, lungs and central nervous system. Exposure also increases cancer risk (Ann R. Kennedy).
Another reason space exploration should be concluded is the effects of the countless money we spend on space exploration. The budget for space
exploration is 17.7 Billion a year. The total cost in all of the years of space exploration is 780 billion dollars (Amadeo). One may point out that this
money in the long run can help discover amazing things. Although this is true, some possible ways this money could've been and can be used are to
lower the national debt of 60 trillion dollars, reduce poverty in underdeveloped countries, reduce world hunger, and decrease global warming. World

The battery serves as an energy storage device and the electric motor draw energy from the batteries while also putting energy into them. Finally, the
cars contain a transmission, which remains very similar to those in traditional cars1. But the question remains, how does this new complex system help
the environment?
The hybrid car was created not only to improve mileage, a benefit for consumers who dreaded the weekly trip to the pump, but also to reduce
emissions from the tailpipe. Both these goals help the environment, as decreasing emissions should reduce the risk of eminent global warming, and
improved mileage means less oil would be consumed by the cars. In normal automobile, 13% of the energy in the gasoline is actually used to move
the vehicle2. The major losses in energy efficiency come from acceleration, aerodynamic drag, and rolling resistance. Making a high strength
lightweight material reduces the overall mass of the material and hence reduces the energy needed for acceleration. Smoother shaped vehicles
dramatically reduce drag and better tire designs cut the rolling distance of the vehicle2. But these are just basic improvements to be made to the generic
automobile to increase efficiency.
The basic idea behind the hybrid car involves utilizing a smaller, more efficient engine. A bigger engine, while able to reach high speeds quickly,
remains pointless for typical driving and

Air Pollution In America
The primary cause of climate change is the burning of fossil fuels. Carbon pollution causes more frequent and severe storms, floods, heat waves, and
wild fires. Power plants and major industrial facilities in Georgia Emitted more than eighty–five metric tons of carbon pollution in 2011. Thirteen
counties in metro Atlanta are currently in nonattainment because the region does not meet the federal air quality standard. The American Lung
Association's "State of the Air 2015" report gave a failing grade on ozone to Gwinnett County where I currently live in Metro Atlanta. Metro Atlanta's
air pollution problem is due to the population growth, traffic congestion, and the lack of a large scale transit system. In 2000 the American Lung
Association's "State of the Air" ranked Atlanta as the ninth most populated city for the ozone but we have improved since then. The south usually has
problems with the ozone due to more sunlight and warmer temperatures. Nationwide nearly forty–four percent of the people live in a place where
pollution levels are often too dangerous to breath. Air pollution can lead to serious health issues such as heart disease, heart attacks, and an increase
risk of death from lung cancer. According to the Georgia Environmental Protection Division on average Atlanta has around forty "code orange" days
where health officials warn that children and people sensitive to ozone, people with heart or lung disease to limit outdoor exertion during the afternoon

A Brief Synopsis Of The Emerging Ethanol Fuel Industry
A brief synopsis of the Emerging Ethanol Fuel Industry
Ethyl alcohol or grain alcohol, commonly known as Ethanol (commonly seen as E–85 at the gas pumps) has a long history in the United States. Henry
Ford considered it the fuel of choice. [1] In fact, his very first automobile, built in 1896, ran solely on ethanol. He said, "There is enough alcohol in
one year 's yield of an acre of potatoes to drive the machinery necessary to cultivate the fields for a hundred years." But it 's use in that capacity on a
commercial scale was never realized due to the abundant resources and soon to arrive efficient production processes of petroleum products. However,
with the highly volatile petroleum markets, mounting environmental concerns and the increase of gasoline fuel prices it is being reconsidered. To where
in 2013, ethanol use had displaced as much as 462 million barrels of imported oil, reducing the dependence on foreign oil by 6 percent. [2]
From an Economical View
In the last 10 years alone gasoline fuel prices have doubled, from just over $1.59 a gallon in 2004 to $2.59 a gallon, as of December 2014. But the
unstable fluctuations in the market, along with the nation trying to unshackle itself from the dependence of foreign petroleum, along with the added
fear that the world has reached or is on the verge of reaching 'peak oil ' has spurred renewed interest within the alternative fuel industry as a whole, with
the primary focus focused on ethanol. [3] On the economic front,

Nuclear Energy As An Alternative Power Source
Nuclear Powered Vehicles
Does an energy source such as nuclear energy have the potential to change the way Americans, and the world for that matter, move from place to
place? This technology is very tempting, although it is extremely expensive; the long lasting benefits are remarkable. This technology may seem
revolutionary, but it is still in the beginning stages. Many people would question the thought of stepping foot in a nuclear vehicle. Could this plan of
nuclear energy in vehicles put Americans at more risk than it is worth? The idea of using nuclear energy is not a new doctrine, yet it still seems to
raise some questions. The concept of using nuclear energy as an alternative power source is becoming drastically evident in the U.S. ... Show more

Even if the reactor would fit in the car, the amount of nuclear radiation given off would require several tons of steel to protect the driver. Needless to
say, the concept car never caught on.
Even though, throughout the '50s and '60s, several companies tried their hand at producing a nuclear powered car, none of them were ever
successful. Over the last sixty years, no one has ever been able to build a fully functioning car powered by only nuclear energy (Sebastian). A
nuclear car may not have been feasible in the '60s, but the military had a limited number of nuclear powered ships. The N.S. Savannah was one of
the few nuclear powered ships that the U.S. owned; the idea of these ships never caught on. The ships released small traces of nuclear waste into the
ocean and the idea of radiation in the ocean made many people uneasy (Sebastian). In the '60s, the U.S. military possessed nuclear ships such as ice
breakers and destroyers; once these ships went out of commission, they were no longer made, and the nuclear energy age ended as fast as it had begun
in America.
The idea behind powering something using nuclear technology is fairly easy; the problem is what to do with the radiation produced from the reaction.
The vehicle is powered by the extremely slow decay of an element such as thorium or uranium, which produces heat and causes steam. This steam is
used to spin a turbine engine and create electricity to power

MILLERSBURG – The budget, school funding, infrastructure and a growing heroin epidemic top the list of issues for candidates seeking election to
Ohio's 98th House District. On Nov. 8, Democrat Jeremiah M. Johnson will attempt to unseat incumbent Republican Al Landis. While he said he's
never held state office, Johnson said he has much experience in government. Not only did he work at the statehouse during his college years, from
2003–2006, he served as mayor of Sugarcreek for four years, 2007–2011. During those years, he said, he helped the village recover from a 17 percent

Ethanol
California laws have very high support for advanced biofuel development. The California Legislature urges the U.S. Congress and the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency to take action to amend the U.S. Renewable Fuel Standard to favor non–food crop biofuel. As a result, this would
promote the development of advanced fuels by simply using grasses, wood, algae and other plants to make cellulosic ethanol. Because cellulose makes
up nearly half of all plant biomass, cellulosic ethanol is considered the largest potential source of biofuel in the near future. This would eliminate the
need to rely on other countries for fuel when the U.S. can establish their own industry. The positive externalities would be more jobs and less pollution
in America. However, the process of converting plant–life into ethanol is much more difficult that it is for starch to become ethanol. Consumers may
yet face exceedingly high prices for cellulosic ethanol from within U.S. borders.

Sustainability Strategy for Heavy-Duty Diesel in Wilimington
Sustainability Strategy Research Memo: Heavy–Duty Diesel in Wilimington Between investment in new fueling technologies and preparing the
existing (and future) workforce to implement and maintain new forms of technology, heavy–duty diesel improvements could have a major impact on
the community of Wilmington. Especially given the large amount of goods movement that initiates in Wilmington; there is great potential to reduce the
environmental impact of this industry through the improvement of heavy–duty diesel operations. Maintaining a focus on the overall goods movement
will promote improved air quality, and therefore improved quality of life for the residents of this neighborhood.
The use of cleaner fuels and alternative energy (e.g. natural gas, biomethane, electric fuel–cell, etc.), replacing older vehicles and equipment,
maintaining and repairing engines, and installing diesel retrofits all provide viable options that would ensure cleaner goods movement operations, and
thusly reduce the impact on the environment and the community. Beyond improving the equipment and vehicles that rely on diesel, implementing
outreach and awareness campaigns and workforce development training programs have the potential to significantly improve goods movement
operations in Wilmington. These strategies could potentially target businesses, companies, fleet operators, and local government entities responsible for
regulating these industries. Particular effort could be placed on making

The End Of Conventional Oil Essay
End of Conventional Oil Don't worry about replacing that luggage just yet! Air transportation will end in the near future if not enough advancements
are made to eliminate the industry's heavy reliance on oil consumption. It is estimated that conventional oil will only be accessible to us for the next
33 years (Dr. Oriet). As the supply diminishes, the price will continuously increase until it is unaffordable for most people and businesses. Although
oil has been burned to generate energy since the 18th century (Mitsubishi, n.d.), reliance on this resource has grown at a staggering rate as cities have
become more urbanized and the demands for more oil, as a significant source of energy, have continued to expand. This trend indicates that an even
greater supply will be needed as time goes on despite the fact we know there won't be enough oil to meet demand. Eventually, because oil is a
non–renewable resource, it will run out. This will pose significant problems for many industries including the airline industry. Many people of this
generation have become accustomed to easy access to air travel and the opportunity to travel around the world. When the option to fly no longer
exists, it will affect more than just tourism; the negative effects will also be felt in global trade and the employment of many people, causing
significant economic and social impacts. In efforts to deal with this problem ahead of an oil shortage, engineers have begun researching innovative

Climate Change and Greenhouse Gases Essay
Global Warming and Greenhouse Gases
The United States releases twenty tons of carbon monoxide per person per year. Carbon Monoxide release is a result of burning fossil fuels with an
insufficient amount of oxygen that causes the formation of carbon monoxide that pollutes our environment. Everyday fuel is burnt by cars, airplanes,
large factories and manufacturing plants. This is causing a very large and deadly problem for our environment. When gases used on earth are released
into the atmosphere they act as a blanket and trap radiation that is then redirected to earth. This concept is called the Greenhouse Effect (Bad
Greenhouse, 1).
There are many ways in which we can slow and even stop the Greenhouse effect. More public ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Public transportation can help reduce stress caused by driving, save money, and also protect our environment by reducing the number of vehicles on
the road. In order to get more people off the road and into the public transportation system we must increase the number of buses and taxis that are
available. We must also increase the number of stops available for daily bus routes. With more stops on the map more people are likely to use the
bus system. Each city or town will be able to decide where more bus stops are needed and make the adjustments necessary to provide better service for
the taxpaying citizens. Of course, none of this is possible without adequate funds in each town/city and the gas tax is guaranteed to provide those funds.
Providing more public transportation will help us reach our ultimate goal of protecting the environment and ourselves.
The other fifty percent of your money will be split evenly between funding for research of alternative fuel sources and funding for the implementation
of a high–speed rail system in the United States.
Alternative sources are the only absolute way we can secure the safety of our environment. Everyday carbon monoxide is released into our air. This is
creating holes in the ozone layer and exposing humans to deadly fumes (Bad Greenhouse, 1). More money available to scientists who study alternative

Alternative Fuels Essay 8
Alternative Fuels This day in age, one of the world's main concerns is energy. Currently, we rely on petroleum to run our cars, and household central
heat, and electricity in our homes. Petroleum is not only limited, but it is also dirtying up the world's air, and depleting the ozone layer as it is burned.
Alternative fuels are one of the worlds most talked about issues, and many solutions have been brought forth, yet none of them have been
sophisticatedly acted upon. Through the list of pros and cons, one shall determine the importance of alternative fuels, and how bad the pros outweigh
the cons, thus forcing the reality of the matter that we need to start moving towards these alternate forms of energy, and fuel. Despite the minor... Show

This would be quite a chunk out of one's pocket book, ranging in very high prices (Wikipedia). Another non–depleting energy vein that we are able to
tap into is wind. Wind power is generated when large, slow moving wind turbines are spun with the wind, thus causing a coil inside to generate
electricity. These are seen throughout the Great Plains, and many other flats. These are generally not powerful enough, unless they are built in large
numbers. Many times, around two hundred are built in one area, to produce for the nearest city or town. Although these do produce some good, usable
energy, as with all things, they have some problems. Wind does not always blow, and when the wind stops, so does the energy. Sun is not always
shining, for solar energy, but they have cells to store energy for nightfall. Wind Turbines are also a big concern for birds. Migrating or locals, flying
birds of all kinds are in danger from a twenty–food diameter of spinning death. This has been a concern of PETA and other animal protection agencies
(CNN). Another type of fuel is Biofuel. This type of energy is produced through different types of wastes. Potato peels, whey, turkey guts, and frying
oil are all types of wastes that can be converted into biofuel. This is a relatively new scientific breakthrough in the hunt for a more efficient energy
source. The good thing about using biofuel is that it is clean, and can get rid of our wastes, while

The world has relied on the same sources of fuels and delivery systems for at least the past one hundred years. Since the turn of the Industrial

At the rate it that these fuels are used the world may one day run out of these precious resources. Our society must prepare now to utilize an alternate
source for its fuel. The longer the world waits, the harder it will be to replace these fuels before they run out. Four different types of fuels are currently

1). In a process known as electrolysis, hydrogen is created by applying electricity to water. When applied to water, electricity breaks down the
water into bubbles of oxygen and hydrogen gases. Some argue that this process would require electricity produced by current fuel sources.
However, this electricity could also be supplied by solar energy. Once created hydrogen must then be stored and distributed. Hydrogen must be
stored at super high pressures as a liquid. Once stored, the hydrogen will then be converted back into a gas. This area of research is making large
strides to develop this storage technology. Once the researchers can overcome this stage, it will be more readily available to the public. The
infrastructure for hydrogen could be adapted from the current system that is used. The gas, stations, and fueling stations could already act as a means
of distribution. This means hydrogen may one day be a logical replacement for conventional fuels. Another promising type of fuel that can replace
conventional fuels is natural gas. Natural gas, found along with conventional fuels, is very abundant. Nearly 85% of natural gas is made of methane
(Gotlib, par. 1). It is found "among the same petroleum deposits that conventional oil is found or in sole gas deposits" (Gotlib, par. 1). This gas has

resources are focused into this technology for consumer based vehicles. A company by the name of Air Liquide, recently stated that in collaboration
with Toyota, an entirely integrated hydrogen fueling framework would be implemented in the United States (Fuel Cells Bulletin, 2014).Toyota is
involved with the project due to the recent release of the Mirai model which runs on hydrogen. "Hydrogen has great potential to provide clean energy.
Used in the fuel cell, hydrogen combines with oxygen from the air to produce electricity, with water as the only by–product" (Fuel Cells Bulletin,
2014). The Mirai is the turning point for the automotive sector according to Wardlaw. The vehicle had more than twenty years of research and
development prior to its release. The author argues that the technology is here and ready for mass consumption, but that the only piece missing is the
infrastructure (Wardlaw, 2015). In response to the issues with infrastructure, Toyota has opened up its patents on the technology as a means of

A Critique of “Why the Gasoline Engine Isn’t Going Away...
In this article "Why the Gasoline Engine Isn't Going Away Any Time Soon," Joseph B. White states that alternative energy cars could be the start of a
revolution in the automaker world, however, complications interfere with the outcome. Although the author suggests different ideas on alternative
vehicles, he contradicts himself numerous times while also lacking credibility of any sources.
White's main points relate to the automotive revolution. Environmentalists want car companies to determine how to make alternatives to the regular
petroleum–fueled engine. White explains alternative methods that could persuade the automotive industry to go green, such as using ethanol or other
biofuels to power one's car (332). However, while explaining ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
White says that "to produce a new vehicle it takes three to five years" (332), but he neglects to prove this information with ethos. The author later
defends the automakers by stating "that doesn't mean auto makers and their technology suppliers aren't serious about rethinking the status quo" (333),
therefore, he could confuse the reader with mixed opinions (332–333).
Later, White explains how challenging it is to convert from gas engines to electric due to the expenses involved. The author claims that gasoline is
cheaper than "many brands of bottled water" (333); however, he does not give proper ethos for his poorly stated logos. Not supporting his logic takes
away from the strength of his article as a whole, making his assumptions unconvincing. The author says that our advances in technology allow one to
use hydrogen as a fuel. White then follows up with how there are only 1,000 natural–gas fueling stations in the country without supporting ethos (333).
In conclusion, the author opposes every idea mentioned in the article. This proves that his negative attitude could affect the way the reader views his
points. White's explanation of the pros and cons contradict his opinions shown in the article. In regard to the author presenting this article with facts, he
failed to support them with any credibility. Thus, his assumptions are weak which make his claim unreliable.

Tax exemptions are available to those who use alternative fuel in such a way as to be deemed nontaxable by the IRS. "Common nontaxable uses in a
motor vehicle are: on a farm for farming purposes; in certain intercity and local buses; in a school bus; exclusive use by a nonprofit educational
organization; and exclusive use by a state, political subdivision of a state, or the District of Columbia." (DOE, 2011) The positive externality
associated with this tax exemption is lower air pollution in large urban areas.
A negative externality associated with alternative fuels as an energy source is the loss of jobs for those who work in the fossil fuel industry. If
alternative fuel sources become more popular and are mandated as the primary energy source for motor vehicles, there are thousands of Americans
whose livelihoods could be adversely affected due to the shut–down of rigs both on and off shore. Entire companies could be forced to close, as they
are not financially equipped to handle a retrofit to produce or refine alternative type fuels.

Imagine a future in which you can fill your car with a liquid that has more mileage than gasoline and is just as biodegradable as sugar. This is the
future of bio–diesel, and is well on its way to becoming the future we will live in. Bio–diesel has always been an area of study for researchers looking
for renewable fuels, usually biodiesel is produced from plant waste, like corn husks, but recently it was discovered that bio–diesel could be produced
with oils found in algae, which many people are considering to be our best option when it comes to alternative fuels.
This new–found source of bio–diesel is causing a lot of excitement in the scientific community not only because of how renewable it is but because of
its easy integration into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The only technical issue people may have with putting bio–diesel in their diesel engines is it can eat through older gaskets and tubing, and it solidifies
at lower temperatures. The gaskets and tubing can be easily replaced with more resistant types, and there is still much research going into making
insolated gas tanks that would stay warm enough to keep alternative fuels from solidifying.
Some other qualities of bio–diesel that make it easily intergraded into today's fuel industry is its close energy equivalent to gasoline and its matter form.
Bio–diesel being a liquid makes it easy to integrate into today's large fuel enterprise, because all gas stations can be easily converted to bio–diesel
stations by simply filling them up with bio–diesel instead of gas. Another issue is volume, some alternative fuels have very little energy in them per
gallon compared to gasoline, meaning gas tanks would need to be much larger, but bio–diesel contains more energy per gallon than gasoline, resulting
in no fuel tank expanding necessities. This is especially good news for vehicles like airplanes that require vast amounts of fuel to travel around. If you
were to put ethanol in an airplane it would need to be completely re–fueled in air during a 5 hour flight. All in all switching the world from gasoline to
bio–diesel as opposed to another alternative fuel saves a lot of money and resources, and can even help make more money.

trade with the Middle East is good for there economy, but I for one don't like being dependant on foreign oil. That is where hydrogen fuel cells come

Then there is the fact that everybody would have to buy new cars in order for the process to work, most people do not have the money, but the
government could always do some kind of fund to get the money for the people to buy the cars. Mechanics would have to go back to school to
learn how to work on the new cars, or they could put a small training course out and give it to the mechanics. Finally, the last major problem with
hydrogen is the fact that it is more flammable then gasoline, this is only true if the gas is not contained properly. When you think of hydrogen,
you think of the blimp the Hindenburg, which was a hydrogen filled blimp, and then it explodes because the gas was not contained properly. I
think that all these problems can be fixed. Cars powered by hydrogen get better gas mileage. They can go double the distance or even triple the
distance of the car with the best gas mileage on the market. The cars can't go as fast as cars can today, but they can get very close. Toyota is the

have one thing in common, they all consume fossil fuels and the whole world has become dependent on this type of transportation to move around

most certainly be gone in the span of Generation Y. Likewise, scientists have noted the detrimental cost of burning these fuels to the environment,
which include increasing greenhouse gases and polluting the world's air. A disproportionate amount of oil is discovered compared to the amount
consumed each year. Supply cannot keep up with the ever growing demand. Yet, oil companies still claim they will never run out of oil. It is in the
best interest for these corporations and the media to keep this information classified, in order to "milk" oil for as much capital as possible for as long
as possible, with no regard to the well–being of earth and its inhabitants.

Electric Cars Are Going to Be the Future Essay
Electric Cars Are Going To Be the Future Nearly every household in America owns a gas powered vehicle, which pollutes our environment daily. Our
society needs to consider furthering its knowledge and use of electric cars. Pollution of our environment must come to a halt in every situation possible
in order to save the future of our atmosphere. I believe that the switch from gas–powered cars to electric cars is a very necessary and reasonable
approach to save the environment. Several different car manufacturers have already began making efforts to adapt their vehicles to become more
environmentally safe products. Although our country runs off oil and its proceeds, we can still attempt to make conversions that will lead to an overall...

Therefore, engineers and car manufacturers are not fixing the problem as a whole with their efforts to revolutionize automobiles, but every step
forward counts. Instead of being content with the advancements, car manufacturers and engineers should continue to explore the world of
environmentally safe opportunities to bring forward into the public eye. One of the most widely known alternatives to gasoline in America is hydrogen
or biodiesel. Some might argue that hydrogen–powered or biodiesel–powered cars are more efficient than electric–powered cars, but they are not even
close. Hydrogen cars are more expensive to fuel. The hydrogen car costs about three dollars per gallon, which totals around fifteen cents per mile,
while the electric car pays in kilowatt–hours, which totals about two cents per mile. The average hydrogen car costs about one million dollars and the
technology is just not there yet. It would cost excessively much to install hydrogen fueling stations and biodiesel pumps when it would be much easier
and more reasonable to install a greater amount of electrical outlets across the world. Although, electric cars are more expensive to buy off the
dealership lot they outperform the regular gasoline cars physically and economically. The electric car overall is cheaper to maintain, but unfortunately,
after about ten years the lithium ion batteries start to drain out, but instead of buying a brand new car

Persuasive Essay On Electric Cars

  • 1. Persuasive Essay On Electric Cars Electric Energy Op Ed Rough Draft How would you like to never have to pay for gas again? With gas prices always changing you never know how much money you are going to be feeding to the pump. By trading your car in for an electric powered car, gas will be one less thing to stress about. By making this change you can save the money that you would be spending on your gas guzzling car and put it towards something else. There are many types of electric cars to choose from, ranging from the standard Nissan Leaf at $30,000 to the luxury BMW i8 at $145,000. Not only would you be saving yourself time and money by going electric, but you would also be taking a stride towards a better planet. With the supply of fossil fuels steadily declining, gas and oil is becoming harder to harvest which means it is getting more expensive. Fossil fuels take millions of years to be naturally produced, yet each person burns gallons of gas per day (Maehlum par. 5). Though fossil fuels are produced naturally, when burned they release nitrogen oxides gases into the atmosphere, which contributes to the formation of smog and acid rain. According to the EPA, major sources of these nitrogen oxide emissions come from cars and trucks, coal–fire powered plants, large industrial operations, and ships and airplanes (EPA par 3). By reducing the number of gas powered cars on the road, we can reduce the amount of harmful chemicals we are releasing into our atmosphere. Gas powered cars do not only effect our air, ... • 2. Environmental Change : The Environmental Effects Of... Climate change is known worldwide and the environmental effects on our planet cannot be disregarded. Understanding the distinction among climate and weather is imperative in understanding how certain variables add to the change of temperature. These variables can include natural causes of the Earth's decay over time, however, scientists are well aware that human error and our daily lifestyles contribute to the poor conditions that our earth is falling into. When humans just started to exist on Earth, human impacts on the environment occurred in only a minimal and insignificant quantity. This occurred because of small populations and the absence of innovation and technology around them. When humans adjusted to the environment and figured out how to expand and humans became inventors, and innovators, the population started to develop and future expanded. However, not all that we as humans invent and contribute to our society is clean, or natural. Some of it can be toxic, and some of it can be harmful to our atmosphere and our homes. By the present guidelines, individuals living past the age of eighty years of age, is a noteworthy achievement for humankind. Fuller lives from the inhabitants of earth implies that more assets from the earth will be used. However, this is not suggesting that we as humans should not want to lives longer lives. It suggests that we as humans should live smarter, cleaner, fuller lives. The cleaner we are as humans, and use the lowest amount of earth ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Corn Ethanol : Good Or Bad? Corn–Ethanol: Good or Bad? Are you tired of paying those high fuel prices at the pump every time you go to fill up your vehicle? The ever–rising price for a barrel of foreign oil has most American citizens really watching where they drive. A majority of the people is not aware that there is an alternative to the problem. It is startling to think that there is a fuel source here on our own soil that most people pass everyday and do not even think about it. That fuel source is called corn–ethanol, and a majority of people can see the main ingredient, which is, corn in America 's farm fields. Corn is grown annually and it does not take millions of years to reproduce. Oil is a fuel source that takes millions of years to reproduce. Abiofuel is the process of taking any once living plant and abstracting the plant 's energy to make a fuel. People in America are supporting Biofuels, including corn–ethanol because it does not require oil. It also reduces green house gasses, which makes it better for the environment (Cassman 59). The common view of ethanol is that it is just a research project to make the environmentalists happy but that is not true. It has the potential to keep America 's economy rolling, supply a fuel source, and still feed livestock with its byproducts. The key to success as a country is to use what we already have an abundance of in this country. The evidence is all there for this argument many Americans just need to become educated about this topic. The main ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Negative Effects of Automobile Emissions Pollution Essay The Negative Effects of Automobile Emissions Pollution Charles Dickens wrote about the dirty conditions of London, England by saying, "Smoke lowering down from chimney pots, making a soft black drizzle, with flakes of soot in it as big as full–grown snowflakes – gone into mourning, one might imagine, for the death of the sun . . . Fog everywhere . . . fog down the river, where it rolls defiled among the tiers of shipping, and the waterside pollutions of a great (and dirty) city" (Qtd. Langone 28). The problem with the air back in Dickens' day was all of the coal that was burned for heat and power. Today, we do not often use coal in our individual homes or businesses, but we still have a big problem with our air. Automobiles are our... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Very Unhealthful level advises people to avoid outdoor activity and people with heart and lung problems should stay indoors and avoid all activity. At this level, there are widespread irritation symptoms among the healthy population. The last level, Hazardous, can cause many serious health problems, including the early onset of disease. It advises that everyone should stay indoors with all doors and windows shut and avoid physical activity of any kind. This level can also cause premature death in the ill and elderly (EPA 4). The negative effects of automobile emissions pollution were recognized long ago. The Department of Health, Education and Welfare estimated in the late 1950's that nationwide, cars contribute 48 percent of the carbon monoxide, 4 percent of the sulfur dioxide, 32 percent of the nitrogen oxides, 59 percent of hydrocarbons and 8 percent of the particulate matter in our atmosphere. With all of these figures together, it meant that the automobile was by far the nations largest polluter, being responsible for 43 percent of all air pollution (Patterson 6). These numbers were staggering and brought many people to the opinion that something had to be done. The effects of this pollution were seen and felt most heavily in large cities. By 1960, the air in and around Los Angeles was so bad that the state government was forced to take action. The main problem for LA was the photochemical smog, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Citizen Level Problem Citizen Level Problem: With limited resources, comes a high cost of living, therefore causing the poverty line to increase. When oil is not in abundance, the cost of oil will rise. Oil is used to transport goods from different parts of the world. The rising of oil and gas prices will reflect in the price increase of our food found in local markets. Because of the higher cost of food, there will be a lot of people struggling to live a stable lifestyle. With insufficient vitamins, we may find many people – especially children– with malnutrition. A daily amount of nutrition is important for our growing population and future generations. Another possible problem is that there could be more homeless people in the area, or we may see residents leaving to move to another state. Our middle class citizens would have a difficult time regularly going to and from work. Even public bus transit costs... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Emergency vehicles will suffer such as police cars, ambulances, fire trucks, and other rescue vehicles. The problem caused by a lack of oil is the decrease in the productivity of the state. Cities and roads will need to build and maintain over the years, which can't be done without oil as the primary energy resource. When roads and buildings cannot be maintained, the foundation of the state can result in disasters, potentially damaging any prospect of value in this state. The state's military may cost the state more by the amount of security and defense it sustains. By reducing the amount of soldiers, the state may be vulnerable to an attack. The coast guard may reduce the quantity of its patrols, and consequently lose a ship to its unfortunate demise. All of this may cause the government to raise its taxes, thus, creating more unhappy citizens. • 6. History of Chemistry: Hydrogen as an Alternative Use of... In this paper I am going to be talking, about how the element hydrogen when chemically broken down can produce enough power to run things like, cars, planes, helicopter, etc... which is chemistry in technology. Right now most everyone is very heavily dependent on the use of fossil fuels and the search for alternative fuel sources are starting to pick up. One of the leading sources of fuel being tested is the use of hydrogen as an alternative fuel. One of the disadvantages is that hydrogen is only found in a handful of locations. They have already started to integrate it into natural day to day living like the power plant in Italy, many car companies are starting on designs of hydrogen powered cars. I feel that the use of hydrogen as an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Water is very plentiful it makes up 75 percent of the Earth and you can use water ornatural gas, which is also very plentiful, to break down the hydrogen into a useable fuel. Because it is so abundant they can make and deliver it in large quantities that are competitive with the gas prices that we have today. The use of hydrogen as a power source is already being implicated in day to day life they use it to power buses, cars, scooters, forklifts. NASA even uses it to power some of its space ships. NASA has been using Hydrogen in its liquid status to lift its rockets into space. The fuel cells power the shuttle's electrical systems, producing a clean byproduct, water which the crew drinks. It is a lot cleaner then fossil fuels because it does not have the harmful eminences that fossil fuels have. Chevy has already produced a car that runs off hydrogen, the Equinox, the fuel cell car is an electric vehicle that converts hydrogen and oxygen into electricity which it uses to power the vehicle. A few big car companies, Ford, Mercedes, and Nissan, are pulling together to produce a hydrogen powered car that would only emit water by 2017. The use of hydrogen is still in the early steps of becoming the main source of power because people have such a heavy dependence on oil it hasn't really gone out on a big stage to effect the whole world. • 7. The Car and Society Essay The Car and Society The automobile has had a tremendous impact on society and the environment since its development in the beginning of the 20th century. Today, there are over 500 million motor vehicles on the earth. The automobile's efficiency, style, and performance have changed over the years, but there is one thing that has not – the pollution the automobile generates. Because of the pollution, people find themselves asking whether this technology has helped our society or hurt it. Should the consequences of the automobile be cause to eliminate it? Or should science develop technology to eliminate the pollution caused by the car? Some people believe that the benefits of the automobile far outweigh the consequences. These people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pollutants that are given off through the emissions of automobiles are hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxides, and carbon dioxides. Hydrocarbons emitted by automobiles create smog. Smog can create health problems for people. These problems include lung and respiratory problems. Nitrogen oxides form acid rain that hurts plants, wildlife, and the paint on our cars. Carbon monoxide reduces the flow of oxygen in the bloodstream. Carbon dioxide is a "greenhouse gas" and is a primary factor contributing to global warming. Other reasons people are so against cars include the amount of trash cars leave behind. Thousands of acres of our earth are covered with concrete to create roadways for these automobiles. Millions of automobiles are replaced every year. The owners either get tired of the old car, or want a new car, or they buy for other reasons. This creates tons of waste. Often cars are just junked or parted out leaving masses of trash everywhere. Highways lay across millions of miles of our environment. Many habitats were uprooted and covered with concrete. People against cars say that this is not natural, beautiful or efficient. Roads are not only ugly, but they are expensive. Roads continually need to be repaired. Who knows, maybe in 10 years, we could actually look into the sky and see a brighter day. Hybrid vehicles are striking the scene in a positive way. They are becoming the choice vehicle for many buyers. Hybrids are fashionable in both style and status. With more consumers being focused on the ongoing problem of air pollution, it is not a surprise they are drawn to hybrid vehicle models (Why Hybrids are the vehicles of choice these days, n.d). Hybrids are easier on the environment as well as one's wallet. The fact that they are designed to be kind to the environment is getting the attention of many consumers, businesses and governments. The hybrid car is something of mixed origin or composition by definition. A hybrid vehicle is one that functions with the use of both gasoline engine and electric engine. The gasoline engine is smaller than conventional vehicles, allowing the electric motor to compensate with energy. A high–voltage battery charges the electric motor when the car is parked. The hybrid vehicles can be operated using either of the engines or both at the same time. Therefore, it uses less gas. Hybrids also offer a quiet ride. Many people purchased hybrid cars to save money from the increasingly high price of gasoline. As the cost of gas increases so does the demand on hybrid vehicles. Although ... • 10. Hydrogen And Its Effects On The Environment Hydrogen is the most popular on this list, there are many great things about hydrogen such as it is not harmful to the environment, hydrogen is actually very safe; this is because it uses a chemical process in the fuel cell to use the hydrogen as a fuel, it is much more efficient than gasoline power, and research has shown that hydrogen can actually clean the environment around them. Nonetheless hydrogen has some major problems such the fact that it is extremely expensive to pull hydrogen from water making it much more expensive than other renewable resources. Also the pollution created from making the fuel cells essentially cancels out the benefits of hydrogen. Experts state that "hydrogen that escapes during the production process could erode the ozone layer even further and exacerbate global warming." (Watson) Researchers also need to find a way to store hydrogen as it highly flammable compared to gas, and in low density hydrogen has to be transferred under high pressure ––– making the transport very bulky and impractical. (Watson) Biodiesel is essentially diesel that made from renewable resources. Biodiesel is not used very much in America, however in countries in Southeast Asian are embracing this alternative fuel source. Biodiesel can be made from a variety of biological organisms such as corn, grass, or fats. There a lot of positive sides to using ethanol but there an also a few negative things it can produce when used or even made. Ethanol is a good alternative fuel but there is negative things that come with it. Ethanol requires a bunch of corn, barley, and wheat to make (Meyers, 2014). Which in turn could be used to feed starving people all over the world. Using corn, barley, and wheat hinders food availability and even the prices of the food. The new York times has stated that using ethanol actually decreases gas mileage. Ethanol gives you 2–3 miles less than normal gasoline (West, 2014). Ethanol can also break down faster than normal gasoline. Meaning that ethanol can cause rust of the car engine. Making ethanol can actually pollute the air a bunch because of all the gasoline it requires to power the tractors and machines that gather the required material to make it. Ethanol has negative impacts on our environment but overall it has more positives then negatives and makes a good alternative fuel. Natural Gas is another alternative fuel option that has a bunch of positive sides to it. Using natural gas produces lower negative emissions that pollute the air. Even President Bush seemed to agree that alternative fuel vehicles needed to be further investigated when he endorsed the concept of alternative fuel vehicles and allocated more than a billion dollars toward the transition to hydrogen fuels (www.evrental.com, 2001). On the other hand, these types of cars are not a practical investment if cost and availability are issues. Finally, the cars contain a transmission, which remains very similar to those in traditional cars1. But the question remains, how does this new complex system help the environment? The hybrid car was created not only to improve mileage, a benefit for consumers who dreaded the weekly trip to the pump, but also to reduce emissions from the tailpipe. Both these goals help the environment, as decreasing emissions should reduce the risk of eminent global warming, and improved mileage means less oil would be consumed by the cars. In normal automobile, 13% of the energy in the gasoline is actually used to move the vehicle2. The major losses in energy efficiency come from acceleration, aerodynamic drag, and rolling resistance. Making a high strength lightweight material reduces the overall mass of the material and hence reduces the energy needed for acceleration. Smoother shaped vehicles dramatically reduce drag and better tire designs cut the rolling distance of the vehicle2. A Brief Synopsis Of The Emerging Ethanol Fuel Industry A brief synopsis of the Emerging Ethanol Fuel Industry Ethyl alcohol or grain alcohol, commonly known as Ethanol (commonly seen as E–85 at the gas pumps) has a long history in the United States. Henry Ford considered it the fuel of choice. [1] In fact, his very first automobile, built in 1896, ran solely on ethanol. He said, "There is enough alcohol in one year 's yield of an acre of potatoes to drive the machinery necessary to cultivate the fields for a hundred years." But it 's use in that capacity on a commercial scale was never realized due to the abundant resources and soon to arrive efficient production processes of petroleum products. However, with the highly volatile petroleum markets, mounting environmental concerns and the increase of gasoline fuel prices it is being reconsidered. To where in 2013, ethanol use had displaced as much as 462 million barrels of imported oil, reducing the dependence on foreign oil by 6 percent. [2] From an Economical View In the last 10 years alone gasoline fuel prices have doubled, from just over $1.59 a gallon in 2004 to $2.59 a gallon, as of December 2014. But the unstable fluctuations in the market, along with the nation trying to unshackle itself from the dependence of foreign petroleum, along with the added fear that the world has reached or is on the verge of reaching 'peak oil ' has spurred renewed interest within the alternative fuel industry as a whole, with the primary focus focused on ethanol. Jonathan Cabornay ECON 304 Professor Nyguen December 3rd, 2016 Ethanol California laws have very high support for advanced biofuel development. The California Legislature urges the U.S. Congress and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to take action to amend the U.S. Renewable Fuel Standard to favor non–food crop biofuel. As a result, this would promote the development of advanced fuels by simply using grasses, wood, algae and other plants to make cellulosic ethanol. Because cellulose makes up nearly half of all plant biomass, cellulosic ethanol is considered the largest potential source of biofuel in the near future. This would eliminate the need to rely on other countries for fuel when the U.S. can establish their own industry. The positive externalities would be more jobs and less pollution in America. However, the process of converting plant–life into ethanol is much more difficult that it is for starch to become ethanol. Consumers may yet face exceedingly high prices for cellulosic ethanol from within U.S. borders. Air transportation will end in the near future if not enough advancements are made to eliminate the industry's heavy reliance on oil consumption. It is estimated that conventional oil will only be accessible to us for the next 33 years (Dr. Oriet). As the supply diminishes, the price will continuously increase until it is unaffordable for most people and businesses. Although oil has been burned to generate energy since the 18th century (Mitsubishi, n.d.), reliance on this resource has grown at a staggering rate as cities have become more urbanized and the demands for more oil, as a significant source of energy, have continued to expand. This trend indicates that an even greater supply will be needed as time goes on despite the fact we know there won't be enough oil to meet demand. Eventually, because oil is a non–renewable resource, it will run out. This will pose significant problems for many industries including the airline industry. Many people of this generation have become accustomed to easy access to air travel and the opportunity to travel around the world. Carbon Monoxide release is a result of burning fossil fuels with an insufficient amount of oxygen that causes the formation of carbon monoxide that pollutes our environment. Everyday fuel is burnt by cars, airplanes, large factories and manufacturing plants. This is causing a very large and deadly problem for our environment. When gases used on earth are released into the atmosphere they act as a blanket and trap radiation that is then redirected to earth. This concept is called the Greenhouse Effect (Bad Greenhouse, 1). There are many ways in which we can slow and even stop the Greenhouse effect. More public ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Public transportation can help reduce stress caused by driving, save money, and also protect our environment by reducing the number of vehicles on the road. In order to get more people off the road and into the public transportation system we must increase the number of buses and taxis that are available. We must also increase the number of stops available for daily bus routes. With more stops on the map more people are likely to use the bus system. Each city or town will be able to decide where more bus stops are needed and make the adjustments necessary to provide better service for the taxpaying citizens. Of course, none of this is possible without adequate funds in each town/city and the gas tax is guaranteed to provide those funds. Providing more public transportation will help us reach our ultimate goal of protecting the environment and ourselves. The other fifty percent of your money will be split evenly between funding for research of alternative fuel sources and funding for the implementation of a high–speed rail system in the United States. Alternative sources are the only absolute way we can secure the safety of our environment. Everyday carbon monoxide is released into our air. This is creating holes in the ozone layer and exposing humans to deadly fumes (Bad Greenhouse, 1). More money available to scientists who study alternative fuels will allow them to do more extensive testing and research. Although the world is not yet running ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Alternative Fuels Essay 8 Alternative Fuels This day in age, one of the world's main concerns is energy. Currently, we rely on petroleum to run our cars, and household central heat, and electricity in our homes. Petroleum is not only limited, but it is also dirtying up the world's air, and depleting the ozone layer as it is burned. Alternative fuels are one of the worlds most talked about issues, and many solutions have been brought forth, yet none of them have been sophisticatedly acted upon. Through the list of pros and cons, one shall determine the importance of alternative fuels, and how bad the pros outweigh the cons, thus forcing the reality of the matter that we need to start moving towards these alternate forms of energy, and fuel. Despite the minor... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This would be quite a chunk out of one's pocket book, ranging in very high prices (Wikipedia). Another non–depleting energy vein that we are able to tap into is wind. Wind power is generated when large, slow moving wind turbines are spun with the wind, thus causing a coil inside to generate electricity. These are seen throughout the Great Plains, and many other flats. These are generally not powerful enough, unless they are built in large numbers. Many times, around two hundred are built in one area, to produce for the nearest city or town. Although these do produce some good, usable energy, as with all things, they have some problems. Wind does not always blow, and when the wind stops, so does the energy. Sun is not always shining, for solar energy, but they have cells to store energy for nightfall. Wind Turbines are also a big concern for birds. Migrating or locals, flying birds of all kinds are in danger from a twenty–food diameter of spinning death. This has been a concern of PETA and other animal protection agencies (CNN). Another type of fuel is Biofuel. This type of energy is produced through different types of wastes. Potato peels, whey, turkey guts, and frying oil are all types of wastes that can be converted into biofuel. This is a relatively new scientific breakthrough in the hunt for a more efficient energy source. The good thing about using biofuel is that it is clean, and can get rid of our wastes, while ... • 32. Essay Alternative Energy Sources for the World The world has relied on the same sources of fuels and delivery systems for at least the past one hundred years. Since the turn of the Industrial Revolution, the world has been dependent on coal, oil, and other natural resources. These sources of fuel have worked fine for the world, until now. At the rate it that these fuels are used the world may one day run out of these precious resources. Our society must prepare now to utilize an alternate source for its fuel. The longer the world waits, the harder it will be to replace these fuels before they run out. Four different types of fuels are currently under research. These fuels are hydrogen, natural gas, bio–fuels, and solar energy. Currently under research is a new type of motor, known as... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 1). In a process known as electrolysis, hydrogen is created by applying electricity to water. When applied to water, electricity breaks down the water into bubbles of oxygen and hydrogen gases. Some argue that this process would require electricity produced by current fuel sources. However, this electricity could also be supplied by solar energy. Once created hydrogen must then be stored and distributed. Hydrogen must be stored at super high pressures as a liquid. Once stored, the hydrogen will then be converted back into a gas. This area of research is making large strides to develop this storage technology. Once the researchers can overcome this stage, it will be more readily available to the public. The infrastructure for hydrogen could be adapted from the current system that is used. The gas, stations, and fueling stations could already act as a means of distribution. This means hydrogen may one day be a logical replacement for conventional fuels. Another promising type of fuel that can replace conventional fuels is natural gas. Natural gas, found along with conventional fuels, is very abundant. Nearly 85% of natural gas is made of methane (Gotlib, par. 1). It is found "among the same petroleum deposits that conventional oil is found or in sole gas deposits" (Gotlib, par. 1). This gas has been around since the beginning of time. The natural gas alternative aids in the contribution in reducing the United States reliance on foreign oil and has the potential to become a star if more resources are focused into this technology for consumer based vehicles. A company by the name of Air Liquide, recently stated that in collaboration with Toyota, an entirely integrated hydrogen fueling framework would be implemented in the United States (Fuel Cells Bulletin, 2014).Toyota is involved with the project due to the recent release of the Mirai model which runs on hydrogen. "Hydrogen has great potential to provide clean energy. Used in the fuel cell, hydrogen combines with oxygen from the air to produce electricity, with water as the only by–product" (Fuel Cells Bulletin, 2014). The Mirai is the turning point for the automotive sector according to Wardlaw. The vehicle had more than twenty years of research and development prior to its release. The author argues that the technology is here and ready for mass consumption, but that the only piece missing is the infrastructure (Wardlaw, 2015). White states that alternative energy cars could be the start of a revolution in the automaker world, however, complications interfere with the outcome. Although the author suggests different ideas on alternative vehicles, he contradicts himself numerous times while also lacking credibility of any sources. White's main points relate to the automotive revolution. Environmentalists want car companies to determine how to make alternatives to the regular petroleum–fueled engine. White explains alternative methods that could persuade the automotive industry to go green, such as using ethanol or other biofuels to power one's car (332). However, while explaining ... The author later defends the automakers by stating "that doesn't mean auto makers and their technology suppliers aren't serious about rethinking the status quo" (333), therefore, he could confuse the reader with mixed opinions (332–333). Later, White explains how challenging it is to convert from gas engines to electric due to the expenses involved. The author claims that gasoline is cheaper than "many brands of bottled water" (333); however, he does not give proper ethos for his poorly stated logos. Not supporting his logic takes away from the strength of his article as a whole, making his assumptions unconvincing. The author says that our advances in technology allow one to use hydrogen as a fuel. White then follows up with how there are only 1,000 natural–gas fueling stations in the country without supporting ethos (333). In conclusion, the author opposes every idea mentioned in the article. This proves that his negative attitude could affect the way the reader views his points. White's explanation of the pros and cons contradict his opinions shown in the article. In regard to the author presenting this article with facts, he failed to support them with any credibility. Thus, his assumptions are weak which make his claim unreliable. ... "Common nontaxable uses in a motor vehicle are: on a farm for farming purposes; in certain intercity and local buses; in a school bus; exclusive use by a nonprofit educational organization; and exclusive use by a state, political subdivision of a state, or the District of Columbia." (DOE, 2011) The positive externality associated with this tax exemption is lower air pollution in large urban areas. A negative externality associated with alternative fuels as an energy source is the loss of jobs for those who work in the fossil fuel industry. If alternative fuel sources become more popular and are mandated as the primary energy source for motor vehicles, there are thousands of Americans whose livelihoods could be adversely affected due to the shut–down of rigs both on and off shore. Entire companies could be forced to close, as they are not financially equipped to handle a retrofit to produce or refine alternative type fuels. Imagine a future in which you can fill your car with a liquid that has more mileage than gasoline and is just as biodegradable as sugar. This is the future of bio–diesel, and is well on its way to becoming the future we will live in. Bio–diesel has always been an area of study for researchers looking for renewable fuels, usually biodiesel is produced from plant waste, like corn husks, but recently it was discovered that bio–diesel could be produced with oils found in algae, which many people are considering to be our best option when it comes to alternative fuels. This new–found source of bio–diesel is causing a lot of excitement in the scientific community not only because of how renewable it is but because of its easy integration into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The only technical issue people may have with putting bio–diesel in their diesel engines is it can eat through older gaskets and tubing, and it solidifies at lower temperatures. The gaskets and tubing can be easily replaced with more resistant types, and there is still much research going into making insolated gas tanks that would stay warm enough to keep alternative fuels from solidifying. Some other qualities of bio–diesel that make it easily intergraded into today's fuel industry is its close energy equivalent to gasoline and its matter form. Bio–diesel being a liquid makes it easy to integrate into today's large fuel enterprise, because all gas stations can be easily converted to bio–diesel stations by simply filling them up with bio–diesel instead of gas. Another issue is volume, some alternative fuels have very little energy in them per gallon compared to gasoline, meaning gas tanks would need to be much larger, but bio–diesel contains more energy per gallon than gasoline, resulting in no fuel tank expanding necessities. This is especially good news for vehicles like airplanes that require vast amounts of fuel to travel around. If you were to put ethanol in an airplane it would need to be completely re–fueled in air during a 5 hour flight. All in all switching the world from gasoline to bio–diesel as opposed to another alternative fuel saves a lot of money and resources, and can even help make more money. One big ... Some people (like foreign ambassadors) say that trade with the Middle East is good for there economy, but I for one don't like being dependant on foreign oil. Finally, the last major problem with hydrogen is the fact that it is more flammable then gasoline, this is only true if the gas is not contained properly. When you think of hydrogen, you think of the blimp the Hindenburg, which was a hydrogen filled blimp, and then it explodes because the gas was not contained properly.
