Half‐Duplex – A distinct procedure to communicate, which allows transmission to
dual ways but only one way at a particular point in time.
Half‐height Drives – Typical hard drives measuring 3.5‐inch are offered in heights of
both 1.0 and 1.6‐inches. The drives that are half height are usually around 1.6 inches
tall.
Hard Drive – A device that is electronic and mechanical at the same time and is used
to store data and to retrieve it.
Hard Drive Industry–All the producers of hard drives are together known as the Hard
Drive Industry. Some of the leaders of this industry include IBM.
Hard Error–The error that can be repeated whenever a particular area of the disk is
used.
Hard Sectored – A procedure that entails a digital indication to show the start of a
subdivision on a particular track.
Head – A small metal pole and an electromagnetic coil that read and writes the
magnetic patterns present on a disk. This is also popularly known as a write/read
head.
Head Actuator–This is a motor, which is used to move the head stack muster in a
hard drive to form into line read/write heads that have magnetic tracks on the disks.
Head Crash – The impairment suffered by a read/write head after the head contacts
the surface of the disk. Head crash can be caused by several reasons including dust,
fingerprints, crash, severe shock and others.
Head Disk Assembly (HDA) – The motorized modules of a hard drive, comprising of
all the heads, motors, disks and actuators.
Head Loading Zone – A specific area of the disk earmarked especially for the heads
to use while landing or when taking off particularly while thedrive’s power is
switched off.
Head Stack Assembly – The electromechanical procedure that incorporates
read/write heads and all their backup devices.

2. Headerless Format – A situation where the ID fields or the header is not available.
This allows superior format competence and enlarged user capacity.
Heat Sink – A part of metal stuck with a chip carrier or plug aimed to dissipate heat.
HDA – HDA stands for Hard Disk Assembly. HDA is the mechanical portion of a hard
drive, which is usually sealed. This section includes the disks, spindal motor, the
heads, platters, filters and the voice coil actuator.

High Level Formatting–When the operating system’s format program for instance
DOS format program, performs formatting. The formatting system is also known to
create the file allocation, the root directory and all the basic alignments.
History – (Internet Browser) – A collection of all the website addresses and links that
a user has visited while surfing the Internet.
High‐Level Format–Complete formatting of a disk before it is used. This erases all
kinds of information and data on the drive and the drive becomes absolutely new.
Host – The one computer that various other processors and systems connect to.
Host Adapter – A plug‐in board that acts as the interface between a computer
system bus and the disk drive.
Host Interface– The precise place where the host and the drive connect with one
another.
Host Transfer Rate – Pace of transfer of data by the host system across the SCSI
interface; or, the pace on which a host system transfers information through the
EIDE interface.
