Ballot Case
Last week, the Boston City Council Committee on Education and Committee on Ways and Means
held a hearing to discuss the fiscal impacts of Ballot Question 2, which proposes the approval of up
to 12 new charter schools every year statewide, in Boston. It was greatly emphasized that the
passing of Question 2 will not simply impact educational matters, but will also affect communities
and city services at large.
"Nobody wants to put it in quite those terms, but when we're saying if you're spending more on
charters just spend less at BPS, the reality is they're talking about, without saying it, solutions like
spending less on teachers and facilities," said David Sweeney, the City of Boston Chief Financial
Officer. As the hearing's sponsor, City Council–At–Large and Committee on Education Vice Chair
Annissa Essaibi–George gave ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Members of the budget team, however, expressed that there are already educational issues that need
to be resolved, and could be amplified by Question 2. The state owed $136 million to the
municipalities, but has only reimbursed $80.5 million, creating a serious lack of reimbursement in
charter school tuition from the state, said Katie Hammer, the City of Boston Budget Director.
There is also a flaw in the charter school financial formula even without Question 2, according to
Hammer. Aside from the charter assessment, Boston must pay an "Above Foundation" fee, a 27
percent premium on school tuition, because, this year, it spent 27 percent more on education than
required. Instead of deducting it from the reimbursement it owes the city, the state has been
deducting it from the reimbursement it already paid the city, creating a "double penalty." As
Question 2 would lead to higher assessments and more money owed by the state, it would
exacerbate the issue, Hammer

Education And National Standards Of Excellence
Our world is all about living up to expectations. As children, we were respectful of our elders, we
studied hard to make good grades. Our motivation was pleasing our parents and teachers because it
was what they expected from us. The child knows that the expectations have been met when they
receive a smile from parents, a sticker on a test paper from the teacher, or even the weekly
allowance. In the adult world, educators must also live up the expectations. Those set forth by our
students, their parents, our principals, the school district, the state board of education, and even
national standards. The leaders of this world must also please these same people but must do so for
hundreds or thousands of students within their care ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
More recently, Louisiana, and many other states across the country, have adopted the Common Core
State Standards in an effort to accomplish this goal of creating a system of standards to educational
excellence. According to Uecker, Kelly, and Napierala (2014), these standards serve to provide
"clear, consistent, and targeted benchmarks" that will provide a system for all students to be better
prepared for the next level of education and for the future. The Common Core State Standards are a
set of mathematics and literacy standards that outline what a student should be able to do at the end
of each grade level. Rather than focusing on the minimum needs of the educational system like
NCLB, the Common Core State Standards strive to meet the rigorous needs of student learning in
order to prepare them for the future. Common Core State Standards Initiative (2015) states, "The
standards were created to ensure that all students graduate from high school with the skills and
knowledge necessary to succeed in college, career, and life, regardless of where they live." The
initiative explains that the standards were created because of the growing trend of students in the

Police Chief Job Application Examples
1. Given your previous experience, please explain why you feel The City of North Port is a good fit
for you. I researched this position extensively, including reviewing current and past events involving
the Police Chief, the Assistant Chief, internal issues within the department, issues in the community,
and crime issues. While some of the specifics are unique to North Port, it is ironic that the overall
issues and dynamics are very consistent with issues I have faced and dealt with successfully in
Dayton. My experiences, working a multitude of assignments and supervisory positions in a very
diverse community, have prepared me for the next level. My goal is to be the North Port Police
Chief and I am confident I can lead this department in a direction that maintains positive morale
within the department and provides a positive image within the community. 2. All leaders at some
time have made mistakes. Please provide an example of when you have made a mistake in your role
as a leader and what, if anything, you did to resolve it. I have never been afraid to make a decision,
be it in my personal life, the Military or Police work. I have been fortunate throughout my life to
have excellent influences, leaders and mentors. Even with all this, I have made my share of
mistakes. Some of my mistakes as a leader can be contributed to my strong desire for ... Show more

they were resolved successfully. It is because of these experiences I have been able to teach for the

History Of Garden City Michigan And How It Became A City
The history of Garden City Michigan and how it became a city today and how policing began.
Today policing has changed tremendously by providing high levels of service for our customers
within the community. Today there are so many major issues that affect city with budget cuts,
technology and the population within their society. Garden City originated when Andrew Jackson
transferred 160 acres of land to john lathers in the 1800's. The city was patterned after the "Garden
City" concept that became popular in England during the 19th century. These home sites were
sectioned off into acre plots to allow adequate farming area to support the families with fruit and
vegetables. In 1927, Garden city was incorporated as a village. However by 1935 Garden City was
reincorporated as a city and developed a suburban garden community .Garden City was a
community for gardening. The cities that surround this community is Westland, Livonia and Inkster,
eventually these farming communities were broken from lots to subdivisions. In 1969 garden city
had an opportunity to purchase Napkin Township but they declined the offer. In 1927 Garden City
Michigan was a fully fledged city, with a population of 2000 citizens.1927–1932. (Macfie, 1976) It
is believed that the first school in what is now Garden City was a log cabin built sometime between
1840 and 1845. This was a one room frame school was built a, it around 1847, it was called the East
Nankin School, it was used until the 1950s, Although the

Cyberbullying Is A Serious Cause For Concern
Cyberbullying is "when the Internet, cell phones, or other devices are used to send or post text or
images intended to hurt or embarrass another person" (NCPC, 2016). With millions of young
people, particularly teenagers, frequenting the Internet to do class work and socialize, cyberbullying,
or online bullying, has become a serious cause for concern. First, with the advent of technology
being integrated into public schools, some young people are creating online identities and
anonymously posting images or harassing messages intended to harm others. These kinds of
harassing online behaviors are being reported at schools in many U.S. states (Davis, 2012). As a
result, "Thirty–eight states have bullying laws that include a ban on 'electronic harassment' in their
provisions, and 14 states have laws that expressly prohibit cyberbullying" (Davis, 2012).
Next, rumors are easily spread in online interactive forums and on popular social media websites
such as Facebook and MySpace. In one instance, three Massachusetts students created a fake
Facebook page using the real identity of a classmate to publish negative comments about students
enrolled at the school. Angered students then mocked and teased the student who had fallen victim
to these three students. The issue created a legal quagmire for the school principal, who did not have
a cyberbullying policy in place and needed to take immediate steps to rectify this unfortunate
situation (Davis, 2012).

Common Core Standards Research Paper
In 2009, state leaders, governors, state commissioners of education of 48 states created the National
Governors Associations Center for Best Practices (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School
Officers (CCSSO) with hopes to create a nationwide standards commonly known as Common Core
Standards (CCSS). The new nationwide standards marks the largest education reform that has ever
taken place in America; the NGA and CCSSO wanted to eliminate the different standards set by
states and districts and create a universal standard that would benefit the students regardless where
they live.
The first thing that CCSS did was divided into two categories: College and Career– Readiness
Standard and K–12 Standards. By dividing the process into two categories

assignment because I never been to a meeting and I never ask to interview a council member, so I
went down to my local city hall and inquired some information about what day and time the council
meetings are held. So I chose to go to the meeting to get some insight on what really goes on at a

How Writing Has Changed Throughout The Past Century
The nature of writing has changed in the past century. While writing still remains a form of visual
communication, much of this change has been a result of technological advancements such as, from
pen to paper or from a typewriter to a networked computer. The changes and expansion in the ways
we are able to write today have brought about changes in writing pedagogy as well. The teaching of
writing has been part of formal schooling in the United States for over 200 years (Kean 7). One
major pedagogic change in United States' education has to do with the implementation of the
Common Core State Standards. These standards have led to a change in the instruction of writing in
schools. This paper, will focus on instructional changes of writing over time and current
expectations for writing abilities as whole.
The earliest finding of when a focus was placed on writing instruction can be traced to an
interdisciplinary conference on writing research in 1978 at Carnegie Mellon University (MacArthur,
Graham, and Fitzgerald 187). In 1980, the research presented at the conference was published in the
book "Cognitive Processes in Writing" which lead to an increased interest in the cognitive nature of
writing. One model of writing instruction presented in this book asks adults to "think out loud when
composing" (MacArthur, Graham, and Fitzgerald 187). Through analyzing the verbalization of
participants using this model, researchers began to study cognitive processes. This

Common Core State Standards Initiative caught parents and teachers off guard alike. Not many truly
understand that concerns, consequences, and underlying issues that surround Common Core. It
wasn't until children were venting their concerns, teachers were frustrated with the statistics
undermining their duties, and parents questioning Common Core's teaching practices – that
Common Core was put under the spotlight. An educational reconstruction sponsored by the National
Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers sought out to establish a
unified education standard that would detail what K–12 students were to know in English and Math

It should be greatly noted that the involvement of corporate America has made its stance in
education through the use of this non–profit organization. A notable organization created by Bill
Gates, "Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation", has played an extensive role in elevating Common
Core's standards. In–fact the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has given 37 grants in 2015 alone,
totaling in over 42 million dollars, in an effort to implement and promote Common Core (Strauss,
2015). Beginning in 2009, when Achieve had partnered with the National Governors Association
and the Council of Chief State School Officers to draft the Common Core standards, the Bill &
Melinda Gates Foundation had invested nearly $10 million in grants alone that year. Many do
criticize Gate's involvement in Common Core, some teacher groups even questioning Gate's
motives. Critics even piling up saying Microsoft benefits from Common Core's use of technology
and data collection, but that's something Bill Gates denies himself. In an interview with Lyndsey
Layton, Bill Gates had repeatedly renounced his position in saying "There's no connection. There's
no connection to Common Core and any Microsoft thing" (Owens, 2014). But with a multitude of
large companies being involved in the development

Improving The Best Of Existing State Standards
Structuring on the best of existing state standards, the Common Core State Standards provide a clear
and reliable learning goal to help prepare students for college, career, and life. The standards clearly
demonstrate what students are expected to learn at each grade level, so that every parent and teacher
can understand and support their learning. From Kindergarten through 8th grade, grade–by–grade
standards exist in English language arts/literacy and mathematics. From 9th through 12th grade, the
standards are grouped into grade sets of 9th through 10th grade standards and 11th through 12th
grade standards. Moreover, the CCSS stress the importance of using primary texts in the classroom
to build literacy, along with many other things. While the standards set grade–specific goals, they do
not define how the standards should be taught or which materials should be used to support
students. States and districts know that there will need to be a range of supports in place to
guarantee that all students, including those with special needs and English language learners, can
master the standards. It is up to the states to outline the full range of supports appropriate for these
students. Since the release of the final standards in 2010, a two–party mix of organizations
representing parents, teachers, business leaders, and other key voices have strongly supported the
Common Core State Standards. The National Governors Association Center for Best Practices

Progressivism Is An Educational Philosophy Essay
When one walks into a classroom, they normally see a line of desks all facing the same direction so
that the students may view the board in the front of the room where they will review the lecture that
is planned. There is a desk for a teacher to sit at in the corner and normally a clock and a poster or
two that has some sort of inspirational quote. Every elementary class that I have been in has been
the same. Year after year we usher our children into an unchanging room so that they can sit, be
quiet, and try to absorb maybe three percent of what you show them on the projector, but that is not
how I believe that our students should learn. According to what I believe, I would be considered a
progressivist. I want my students to be able to take a lesson and apply it to their lives. Progressivism
is an educational philosophy emphasizing real–world problem solving and individual development
(Eggen & Kauchak, 2008). There should never be a student asking why they have to learn
something because you should have already explained to them in detail as to why it pertains to their
lives. I also believe that students should be free to move around and communicate with one another
about projects and homework and questions that they would better answer themselves. Three
INTASC standards that I believe go well with progressivism and are a few of my personal favorites
are as follows: numbers two, three, and five. I will use what I know about progressivism and these

Chicago's budget crisis has been one of the most unfortunate events of the decade. As a former

Assuming Claypool has fixed the issue, he along with Chief Education Officer Janice Jackson, and

schools you are starting to force parents to try to find something else. ... That's not competition. That

should be examined by what stops a CPS student's right to be educated. This would include national
events such as the recent news with CPS students who are involved with Deferred Action for
Childhood Arrivals policy, also known as the DACA policy. According to ABC 7 Chicago

elementary and high school, to the new school year. Not only that, but he responds to the recent
Trump administration decision to phase out DACA, which has protected nearly 800,000 young
undocumented young adults from deportation since 2012. By stating that Chicago is a "Trump–free"
zone, Emanuel and CPS teachers welcome every student despite their race. ("CPS Students Head
Back to Class; Emanuel Assures DACA Students Are Safe") Situations like this give hope to many
parents and teachers of the CPS students.

Common Core State Standards Essay
Since 2010, there were 45 states that have adopted the same educational standards called Common
Core State Standards (CCSS). The initiative is sponsored by the National Governors Association
and the Council of Chief State School Officers and seeks to establish consistent education standards
across the states. The Common Core Standards is initiative state–led effort that established a single
set of clear educational standards for kindergarten through 12th grade in English and Mathematical
standards. These standards help to educate all of the students equally, they help children who move
from state to state, as well as they help to prepare students for college and workplace. The common

Test scores are still dismissed, and state officials have expressed concern that the pace of
improvement is not fast enough to show the benefits of the common core standards. Districts have
also seen varying success in changing how teachers teach, something that was supposed to change
under the new standards. Standards were released for Mathematics and English language arts on
June 2, 2010, with a 45 states adopting the standards in the consequential months. There was an
incentive for the states if they adopted the Common Core Standards. President Obama and Secretary
of Education Arne Duncan announced the Race to the Top competitive grants on July 24, 2009 as a
motivator for educational change. To be eligible, states had to adopt internationally benchmarked
standards. Though states could adopt other standards like college and career ready standards, the
Common Core standards automatically met the requirement. The governors and state schools chiefs
funded development of the Common Core Standards. (Melinda Gates Foundation, Pearson
Publishing Company, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation) Though the Common Core State
Standards do not cover science and social studies content standards currently, the Next Generation
Science Standards are in are the final stage of being developed. They are not directly related to the
Common Core, but their content can be connected to the Mathematical and English Language Arts
standards.

Children 's Role For Optimum Learning And Pro Social Behavior
Society and schools have a great reasonability in their role for optimum learning and pro–social
behavior in children. Learning and socialization typically starts at home, or within daycare facilities.
Many of these first lessons deal with a child's interaction with family, siblings, baby sitters, peers,
etc. They learn what is socially and culturally acceptable within their environment. This can cause
some confusion if the child's family comes from a different culture than is presented at the childcare
facility. In America, there is a 'melting pot' of cultures and diverseness. A child may find that what
may be acceptable at home, may not be acceptable within society in general, and vice versa.

In unaltered Montessori schools, teachers are there to help learning rather than direct its course and
provide support when requested. As the video Environmental and Genetic Influences on
Intelligence, points out one's genes interact with the environment in order to produce the types of
intelligence one has. The combination of many genetic abilities combined with environment and
personal experiences is what determines this intellect. (Intelecom, 2006).
There are three benefits of the Montessori Method, which are:
Children benefit from different learning environments
Children are offered significant choices and are not limited from moving from one activity to
another
Children are able to self–discover
However, there are also drawbacks to this Method, which are:
Teachers are only there to assist learning not to direct it
This method de–emphasizes social interaction
In a large–scale statistical analysis children exiting the program do not perform any better in school
than non–Montessori children
(Mossler, 2011).
Another format of learning for children today is Head Start. Head Start, unlike the Montessori
Method of education, is academically directed, where there is unlimited variation in the skill levels
of the children who attend Head Start. When children are treated generally the same, countless
children are not placed at a developmentally appropriate level. The

Justice. He was elected as the Governor of California, and served three consecutive terms of office.
In his early years he was the District Attorney in California and also served as the Attorney General
of California. In his time as a District Attorney Warren earned himself a reputation for being tough
on crime, he soon gained a statewide reputation as a tough, no–nonsense district attorney who
fought corruption in government. Chief Justice Earl Warren was appointed by president Dwight D.
Eisenhower in 1953 after Warren lost to Eisenhower and Richard Nixon in the election. Earl Warren
was a right wing republican but ended up being more liberal on the Supreme Court than anyone had
every expected. He presided over some very significant cases that will be discussed below. The
three that will be discussed, perhaps the most important, are Brown V. Board of Education in 1954,
Gideon V. Wainwright in 1963, and Miranda V. Arizona in 1966. Now don't be misled, Chief Justice
Earl Warren did a great deal in his career, and influenced very much, however, his most prominent
cases that affected criminal justice and the community are the focus of this essay. These three
landmark cases greatly affect the criminal justice community and the general public even today.

National And State Curriculum Standards
National and State Curriculum Standards
Common Core continues to have many teachers in an uproar, but the development of these
standards was to help synchronize curriculum across the United States to ensure that students were
college and career ready once they graduated high school. In 2009, the National Governors
Association Center for Best Practices and Council of Chief State School Officers (2010) were
responsible for developing the Common Core standards. These groups were two private
organizations that consisted of 48 state leaders, two territories, and the District of Columbia.
The National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and Council of Chief State School
Officers (2010) states that the actual development of the Common Core standards were completed
in two phases. Phase one of the development of the Common Core standards was the college and
career readiness portion of the standards. The standards were revealed and given and met over allow
time for teachers, parents and school administrators to voice opinions, concerns and make
suggestions on how to improve them. Phase two was to incorporate the final version of the K–12
standards Common Core which is used today. During this time, the knowledge and participation of
teachers were utilized in the development process. Teachers participated in groups and committees
and provided input when the Common Core standards were being developed.

The State Of California Governing Bodies Essay
The State of California Governing Bodies The California Postsecondary Education Commission
was granted puissant duties and powers in 1974, after replacing the Coordinating Council for Higher
Education (Education Commission of the States, 2016). The commission does not serve as a
governing board but as an advisory committee to the House of Representatives, governor, and
higher education institutions, with matters paramount to education policies (Education Commission
of States, 2016). The commission holds the authority to review state public and private higher
education institutions financial records, budgets, academic programs and provide recommendations
for campus expansions. However, the primary function of the commission is to coordinate practices
that prevent redundancy within the education divisions (Education Commission of States, 2016).
The focus of the commission is driven by the state's strategic work plan, for which goals are
established targeting institutional areas of concern. Members of the commission constitutes 16
people, 9 in which are selected by the public, 3 appointed by the governor, 3 by the Senate Rules
Committee and 3 by the California Assembly speaker (Education Commission of States, 2016). A

Pearson Custom Education, Five Educational Philosophies
In the book Pearson Custom Education, five educational philosophies are discussed and what each
one represents what a teaching and learning is distinctive to each other and some of them is easily
observable in nowadays moment when in contrast, some of them are rarely to be seen. The first
among the five philosophies is essentialism. It is a teacher centered philosophy which "puts little
stock in what students want in terms of what and how they learn" (Powell, 2015, p.71). There are
requirements for students such as: "[their] interests not important, [they] must be discipline; [and
their] hard work emphasized" (Powell, 2015, p.71). The mainly used method for teaching would be
"direct instruction, memorization, and proven methods" and such ... Show more content on

Its curriculum is mostly based on life experience where knowledge is "obtained through
interactions, [and it is] constructed from what is seen, heard, [and] done" (Powell, 2015, p.73). It is
like when Rafe takes his students to field trips to give his students experiential learnings from real
life involvement.
The next student centered philosophy is social reconstructionism which is "to educate students in
ways that will help society move beyond all forms of discrimination to the benefit of everyone
worldwide. [Unlike from other philosophies], this philosophy addresses such topics as racial
equality, women's rights, sexism, environmental pollution, poverty, substance abuse, homophobia,
and AIDS" (Powell, 2015, p.74). In this philosophy, it wants students be actively involved and
engaged with social issues and teachers as who helps students feel the responsibility for humanity.
How Rafe's teaching assimilates with social reconstructionism is that Rafe also lets his students face
their own life issues during or outside of class and help them think and get to solutions by
themselves. However, Rafe does not force the responsibility for humanity or any other types of
social issue onto his students. He does make his students know that they will be the future who
could influence the world and what is around them, but no such obligatory is given throughout his
teaching. And last but not least, existentialism is the

Furthermore, the National Research Council's 2013 consensus reports highlight that students from
diverse backgrounds are capable of engaging in meaningful learning experiences where they are
given equitable learning opportunities as well as opportunities to demonstrate proficiency (National

students to demonstrate proficiency and ability in English Language Arts by ways of reading and
writing in English (Pearson AccessNext, 2017). The test currently includes videos and images which
is a step in the right direction to cater to the needs of emerging bilingual students. Harp & Mayer
(1997, 1998) and Mayer, Heiser & Lonn (2001) suggest the use of illustrations is not a guarantee of
better testing practices, because not all of them improve the understanding and they can also include
irrelevant visual stimuli to text that hinders comprehension of information (as cited in Solano–
Flores & Wang, 2011). Including not pertinent information is a good way to challenge students and
encourage them to think critically about problem–solving. However, it is not appropriate or fair for

Anthropology: The Seven Clans Of The Cherokee

Introduction to Anthropology

The Seven Clans of the Cherokee
With over 314,000 recorded members, the Cherokee Nation is the largest federally recognized
Native American tribe in the United States. In ancient times, this tribe was just as formidable,
having conquered over 135,000 square miles of territory throughout eight states; North Carolina,
South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia. Much of the
traditional culture remains the same in today's world though some things have evolved out of
necessity to fit modern society (Reese). Despite some of these changes however, the Cherokee
nation is working hard to preserve their native traditions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

So where do the laws actually come from? As it turns out, the traditional law of the Cherokee
emanated from religious beliefs, rather than from written secular rules mandating certain behavior.
The basic tenet of religious belief that guided tribal life was the maintenance of harmony. The
Cherokee people lived by a clearly defined pattern and structure to their lives, sustained by age–old
customs, rituals, beliefs, ceremonies, and symbols that guided the "rightful" and "eternal" order of
things. They believed that there was no aspect of life free from spiritual meaning and thus Cherokee
life was "woven together into a unified pattern of religious rules and connections involving harmony
with the world above, the world below, and the world around." The manifestation of this social and
religious synchronisms was the mutual submission to "customary procedures exercised by clearly
defined groups, such as the clans" (Carroll). Fundamentally, Cherokee law was not based on
individual responsibility or public wrongs but on clan relationships and clan wrongs. Clan
procedures plainly defined who could act, when he or she could act, and what form his or her action
should take. The Clans were also responsible for punishing any wrongdoings or rule breaking. In
most cases the clans were the judge, jury, and in extreme circumstances, the executioners. One such
extreme circumstance might be in the instance of a purposeful or accidental death of a member of
one clan at the hands of a member of another clan. The clan of the member who was killed had the
duty to seek restitution for the loss. Simply put, when one Cherokee killed another Cherokee, their
respective clans would settle the matter internally through restitution. The one to die in return for the
wrongful death of the other did not need to be the person directly responsible. If the one responsible

A message from Mr. Rust, "Every day each of us makes choices where integrity, honesty, and
trustworthiness come into play. These are hard–to–measure qualities, but they 're priceless when it
comes to customer confidence in what we do and how we do it.
It 's important that we know this about each other and that our customers know this about us: At

Mr. Rust has been Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of State Farm Insurance
Companies since 1987. State Farm Insurance is the largest insurer of automobiles and homes in the
United States. Along with being the largest insurance agency they are an extremely philanthropic
company. Even with all of Mr. Rust's success, he takes time to help others succeed. He is obviously
a great and caring leader.

Pros And Cons Of Racial Profiling In The United States
In Indiana, the number of imprisoned African American men is about 395 of the total population of
adult male inmates in the state. On the other hand, 27% of the incarcerated females are the African
Americans, while 58% of the juveniles' prison populations include the African Americans (Davis,
2015). Evidently, the arrest and incarceration rate for the blacks in Indiana is considerably high.
Regardless of the increasing racial profiling in Indiana, the General Assembly in 2016 forwarded a
House Bill that warns against racial profiling. The bill prohibits law enforcement agencies or
officers from engaging in any form of racial profiling, including pretextual stops. The bill requires
that law enforcement agencies collect data on the stops made, which can assist in pointing out cases
of racial profiling. Besides, the legislation requires the agencies to execute training on cultural
diversity awareness and illegal racial profiling as part of the law enforcement officers' training. Any
complaints on racial profiling should be transmitted to the attorney general to facilitate
investigations. Based on the information, the attorney general submits reports each year to the
legislative council. Additionally, the attorney general presents the data to third parties for statistical
analysis, and finally publishes all the results of the statistical analysis on the website for the public.
In situations where racial profiling has been notable, a civil action is taken (Indiana General

Ballot Case

  • 1. Ballot Case Last week, the Boston City Council Committee on Education and Committee on Ways and Means held a hearing to discuss the fiscal impacts of Ballot Question 2, which proposes the approval of up to 12 new charter schools every year statewide, in Boston. It was greatly emphasized that the passing of Question 2 will not simply impact educational matters, but will also affect communities and city services at large. "Nobody wants to put it in quite those terms, but when we're saying if you're spending more on charters just spend less at BPS, the reality is they're talking about, without saying it, solutions like spending less on teachers and facilities," said David Sweeney, the City of Boston Chief Financial Officer. As the hearing's sponsor, City Council–At–Large and Committee on Education Vice Chair Annissa Essaibi–George gave ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Members of the budget team, however, expressed that there are already educational issues that need to be resolved, and could be amplified by Question 2. The state owed $136 million to the municipalities, but has only reimbursed $80.5 million, creating a serious lack of reimbursement in charter school tuition from the state, said Katie Hammer, the City of Boston Budget Director. There is also a flaw in the charter school financial formula even without Question 2, according to Hammer. Aside from the charter assessment, Boston must pay an "Above Foundation" fee, a 27 percent premium on school tuition, because, this year, it spent 27 percent more on education than required. Instead of deducting it from the reimbursement it owes the city, the state has been deducting it from the reimbursement it already paid the city, creating a "double penalty." As Question 2 would lead to higher assessments and more money owed by the state, it would exacerbate the issue, Hammer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Education And National Standards Of Excellence Our world is all about living up to expectations. As children, we were respectful of our elders, we studied hard to make good grades. Our motivation was pleasing our parents and teachers because it was what they expected from us. The child knows that the expectations have been met when they receive a smile from parents, a sticker on a test paper from the teacher, or even the weekly allowance. In the adult world, educators must also live up the expectations. Those set forth by our students, their parents, our principals, the school district, the state board of education, and even national standards. The leaders of this world must also please these same people but must do so for hundreds or thousands of students within their care ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... More recently, Louisiana, and many other states across the country, have adopted the Common Core State Standards in an effort to accomplish this goal of creating a system of standards to educational excellence. According to Uecker, Kelly, and Napierala (2014), these standards serve to provide "clear, consistent, and targeted benchmarks" that will provide a system for all students to be better prepared for the next level of education and for the future. The Common Core State Standards are a set of mathematics and literacy standards that outline what a student should be able to do at the end of each grade level. Rather than focusing on the minimum needs of the educational system like NCLB, the Common Core State Standards strive to meet the rigorous needs of student learning in order to prepare them for the future. Common Core State Standards Initiative (2015) states, "The standards were created to ensure that all students graduate from high school with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college, career, and life, regardless of where they live." The initiative explains that the standards were created because of the growing trend of students in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I researched this position extensively, including reviewing current and past events involving the Police Chief, the Assistant Chief, internal issues within the department, issues in the community, and crime issues. While some of the specifics are unique to North Port, it is ironic that the overall issues and dynamics are very consistent with issues I have faced and dealt with successfully in Dayton. My experiences, working a multitude of assignments and supervisory positions in a very diverse community, have prepared me for the next level. My goal is to be the North Port Police Chief and I am confident I can lead this department in a direction that maintains positive morale within the department and provides a positive image within the community. 2. All leaders at some time have made mistakes. Please provide an example of when you have made a mistake in your role as a leader and what, if anything, you did to resolve it. I have never been afraid to make a decision, be it in my personal life, the Military or Police work. I have been fortunate throughout my life to have excellent influences, leaders and mentors. • 4. History Of Garden City Michigan And How It Became A City The history of Garden City Michigan and how it became a city today and how policing began. Today policing has changed tremendously by providing high levels of service for our customers within the community. Today there are so many major issues that affect city with budget cuts, technology and the population within their society. Garden City originated when Andrew Jackson transferred 160 acres of land to john lathers in the 1800's. The city was patterned after the "Garden City" concept that became popular in England during the 19th century. These home sites were sectioned off into acre plots to allow adequate farming area to support the families with fruit and vegetables. In 1927, Garden city was incorporated as a village. However by 1935 Garden City was reincorporated as a city and developed a suburban garden community .Garden City was a community for gardening. The cities that surround this community is Westland, Livonia and Inkster, eventually these farming communities were broken from lots to subdivisions. In 1969 garden city had an opportunity to purchase Napkin Township but they declined the offer. In 1927 Garden City Michigan was a fully fledged city, with a population of 2000 citizens.1927–1932. (Macfie, 1976) It is believed that the first school in what is now Garden City was a log cabin built sometime between 1840 and 1845. • 5. Cyberbullying Is A Serious Cause For Concern Cyberbullying is "when the Internet, cell phones, or other devices are used to send or post text or images intended to hurt or embarrass another person" (NCPC, 2016). With millions of young people, particularly teenagers, frequenting the Internet to do class work and socialize, cyberbullying, or online bullying, has become a serious cause for concern. First, with the advent of technology being integrated into public schools, some young people are creating online identities and anonymously posting images or harassing messages intended to harm others. These kinds of harassing online behaviors are being reported at schools in many U.S. states (Davis, 2012). As a result, "Thirty–eight states have bullying laws that include a ban on 'electronic harassment' in their provisions, and 14 states have laws that expressly prohibit cyberbullying" (Davis, 2012). Next, rumors are easily spread in online interactive forums and on popular social media websites such as Facebook and MySpace. In one instance, three Massachusetts students created a fake Facebook page using the real identity of a classmate to publish negative comments about students enrolled at the school. Angered students then mocked and teased the student who had fallen victim to these three students. The issue created a legal quagmire for the school principal, who did not have a cyberbullying policy in place and needed to take immediate steps to rectify this unfortunate situation (Davis, 2012). Common Core Standards Research Paper In 2009, state leaders, governors, state commissioners of education of 48 states created the National Governors Associations Center for Best Practices (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) with hopes to create a nationwide standards commonly known as Common Core Standards (CCSS). The new nationwide standards marks the largest education reform that has ever taken place in America; the NGA and CCSSO wanted to eliminate the different standards set by states and districts and create a universal standard that would benefit the students regardless where they live. So I chose to go to the meeting to get some insight on what really goes on at a council meeting. • 9. How Writing Has Changed Throughout The Past Century The nature of writing has changed in the past century. While writing still remains a form of visual communication, much of this change has been a result of technological advancements such as, from pen to paper or from a typewriter to a networked computer. The changes and expansion in the ways we are able to write today have brought about changes in writing pedagogy as well. The teaching of writing has been part of formal schooling in the United States for over 200 years (Kean 7). One major pedagogic change in United States' education has to do with the implementation of the Common Core State Standards. These standards have led to a change in the instruction of writing in schools. This paper, will focus on instructional changes of writing over time and current expectations for writing abilities as whole. The earliest finding of when a focus was placed on writing instruction can be traced to an interdisciplinary conference on writing research in 1978 at Carnegie Mellon University (MacArthur, Graham, and Fitzgerald 187). In 1980, the research presented at the conference was published in the book "Cognitive Processes in Writing" which lead to an increased interest in the cognitive nature of writing. One model of writing instruction presented in this book asks adults to "think out loud when composing" (MacArthur, Graham, and Fitzgerald 187). Through analyzing the verbalization of participants using this model, researchers began to study cognitive processes. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Not many truly understand that concerns, consequences, and underlying issues that surround Common Core. It wasn't until children were venting their concerns, teachers were frustrated with the statistics undermining their duties, and parents questioning Common Core's teaching practices – that Common Core was put under the spotlight. It should be greatly noted that the involvement of corporate America has made its stance in education through the use of this non–profit organization. A notable organization created by Bill Gates, "Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation", has played an extensive role in elevating Common Core's standards. In–fact the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has given 37 grants in 2015 alone, totaling in over 42 million dollars, in an effort to implement and promote Common Core (Strauss, 2015). Beginning in 2009, when Achieve had partnered with the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers to draft the Common Core standards, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation had invested nearly $10 million in grants alone that year. Many do criticize Gate's involvement in Common Core, some teacher groups even questioning Gate's motives. Critics even piling up saying Microsoft benefits from Common Core's use of technology and data collection, but that's something Bill Gates denies himself. In an interview with Lyndsey Layton, Bill Gates had repeatedly renounced his position in saying "There's no connection. There's no connection to Common Core and any Microsoft thing" (Owens, 2014). • 12. Improving The Best Of Existing State Standards Structuring on the best of existing state standards, the Common Core State Standards provide a clear and reliable learning goal to help prepare students for college, career, and life. The standards clearly demonstrate what students are expected to learn at each grade level, so that every parent and teacher can understand and support their learning. From Kindergarten through 8th grade, grade–by–grade standards exist in English language arts/literacy and mathematics. From 9th through 12th grade, the standards are grouped into grade sets of 9th through 10th grade standards and 11th through 12th grade standards. Moreover, the CCSS stress the importance of using primary texts in the classroom to build literacy, along with many other things. While the standards set grade–specific goals, they do not define how the standards should be taught or which materials should be used to support students. States and districts know that there will need to be a range of supports in place to guarantee that all students, including those with special needs and English language learners, can master the standards. It is up to the states to outline the full range of supports appropriate for these students. Since the release of the final standards in 2010, a two–party mix of organizations representing parents, teachers, business leaders, and other key voices have strongly supported the Common Core State Standards. • 14. Progressivism Is An Educational Philosophy Essay When one walks into a classroom, they normally see a line of desks all facing the same direction so that the students may view the board in the front of the room where they will review the lecture that is planned. There is a desk for a teacher to sit at in the corner and normally a clock and a poster or two that has some sort of inspirational quote. Every elementary class that I have been in has been the same. Year after year we usher our children into an unchanging room so that they can sit, be quiet, and try to absorb maybe three percent of what you show them on the projector, but that is not how I believe that our students should learn. According to what I believe, I would be considered a progressivist. I want my students to be able to take a lesson and apply it to their lives. Progressivism is an educational philosophy emphasizing real–world problem solving and individual development (Eggen & Kauchak, 2008). There should never be a student asking why they have to learn something because you should have already explained to them in detail as to why it pertains to their lives. I also believe that students should be free to move around and communicate with one another about projects and homework and questions that they would better answer themselves. Three INTASC standards that I believe go well with progressivism and are a few of my personal favorites are as follows: numbers two, three, and five. The Common Core Standards is initiative state–led effort that established a single set of clear educational standards for kindergarten through 12th grade in English and Mathematical standards. Learning and socialization typically starts at home, or within daycare facilities. Many of these first lessons deal with a child's interaction with family, siblings, baby sitters, peers, etc. They learn what is socially and culturally acceptable within their environment. This can cause some confusion if the child's family comes from a different culture than is presented at the childcare facility. In America, there is a 'melting pot' of cultures and diverseness. The first among the five philosophies is essentialism. It is a teacher centered philosophy which "puts little stock in what students want in terms of what and how they learn" (Powell, 2015, p.71). There are requirements for students such as: "[their] interests not important, [they] must be discipline; [and their] hard work emphasized" (Powell, 2015, p.71). The next student centered philosophy is social reconstructionism which is "to educate students in ways that will help society move beyond all forms of discrimination to the benefit of everyone worldwide. [Unlike from other philosophies], this philosophy addresses such topics as racial equality, women's rights, sexism, environmental pollution, poverty, substance abuse, homophobia, and AIDS" (Powell, 2015, p.74). In this philosophy, it wants students be actively involved and engaged with social issues and teachers as who helps students feel the responsibility for humanity. How Rafe's teaching assimilates with social reconstructionism is that Rafe also lets his students face their own life issues during or outside of class and help them think and get to solutions by themselves. However, Rafe does not force the responsibility for humanity or any other types of social issue onto his students. As it turns out, the traditional law of the Cherokee emanated from religious beliefs, rather than from written secular rules mandating certain behavior. The basic tenet of religious belief that guided tribal life was the maintenance of harmony. The Cherokee people lived by a clearly defined pattern and structure to their lives, sustained by age–old customs, rituals, beliefs, ceremonies, and symbols that guided the "rightful" and "eternal" order of things. They believed that there was no aspect of life free from spiritual meaning and thus Cherokee life was "woven together into a unified pattern of religious rules and connections involving harmony with the world above, the world below, and the world around." The manifestation of this social and religious synchronisms was the mutual submission to "customary procedures exercised by clearly defined groups, such as the clans" (Carroll). Fundamentally, Cherokee law was not based on individual responsibility or public wrongs but on clan relationships and clan wrongs. Clan procedures plainly defined who could act, when he or she could act, and what form his or her action should take. The Clans were also responsible for punishing any wrongdoings or rule breaking. In most cases the clans were the judge, jury, and in extreme circumstances, the executioners. One such extreme circumstance might be in the instance of a purposeful or accidental death of a member of one clan at the hands of a member of another clan. The clan of the member who was killed had the duty to seek restitution for the loss.
