Dudley Street Neighborhood
The rise of industrialization brought the ability to mass produce goods and thus able to sustain a
larger population, a population that was expanding out and away from the city. White veterans
returning from World War II received access to GI bill, which afforded them new housing, that was
being built more quickly than ever thanks to prefabricated parts, manufactured in factories. Thus
with the creation of the suburbs we see this movement away from the dense city and into the
surrounding area. Neighborhoods with Black families could no longer receive any loans from the
bank due to red lining. Money was being invested in building up the suburbs instead, where the land
was cheap and so were the taxes. This lead to a sharp decrease in the value of land within in the city.
Combined with red lining policies, many people were soon upside down on their ... Show more

The Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative is a perfect example of such efforts in Boston,
Massachusetts. The neighborhood was plighted with all the aforementioned disadvantages, such as
red lining, burnt down houses, and then the empty lots became a dumping grounds. Through the
neighborhoods efforts, they raised awareness of their issue and got changes in policy to prevent
dumping. They also utilized imminent domain to reclaim the abandoned lots in their neighborhood
and then through the creation of their own Community Development Corporation were able to build
new affordable housing in its place. Though all this, they were also able to get banks to reinvest in
the area so they can continue to develop. Other cities can and have utilized similar methods and
practices but the results are deeply dependent on the participation of community members and the
willingness of the city to assist. DSNI was able to circumnavigate the city's lack of cooperation in
investing through the creation of their

Public Education Is A Continuing Urban Challenge For Many...
Meeting the general standards that constitute sufficient public education is a continuing urban
challenge for many cities. Of particular interest is the city of Detroit, who's deteriorating school
buildings have become a national focus in recent years. The public education system in Detroit has
continued to disappoint, and stands as a strong example of some the problems with public education
that inner–city residents face. However, is it the inner–city itself that is the cause of the problem? Or
a host of other institutional and social factors related to city life? In part, we can answer this
question by comparing and contrasting Detroit's urban school district with Johnston Iowa's suburban
school district. One way to assess the overall productivity of a particular school district is to
evaluate the results of annual standardized testing enforced by the No Child Left Behind Act. The
results of these tests are measured the same across the country using the National Assessment of
Education Progress (336). Because the results are calculated against the same standards across city
and state lines, it is easy to compare and contrast annual results across districts. In Detroit, for the
academic year of 2014–15, only 17.2 percent of all 8th grade students scored proficient in reading
and only 6.9 percent of all 8th grade students scored proficient in mathematics ("Annual education
report Detroit city school district M–STEP grades 3–8," 2016). This is compared to an annual

Plato's Education System For The Just City

Paper #2–Prompt #3
The Kallipolis: Plato's Educational System for the Just City
A topic that has circulated in the minds of many for centuries, is the idea of education and the proper
ways to go about applying it. In more than one way, education has had a major part in forming the
structure of history and the molding of human beings from the very beginning. The philosophical
journey as conveyed in Plato's Republic, begins to utilize the concepts of justice, injustice, virtue,
and apply them to the foundations of education for human beings in the ideal society. Plato tells of
the account of Socrates during the discussion between Glaucon, Thrasymachus, Polemarchus, and
Adeimantus on the definition of justice ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The key reason being that physicality is the reflection of a healthy soul (80). As to be expected, this
physical training was necessary for the guardians because of their warrior positions and
responsibility to protect the city from threats of outsiders and insiders alike (90). The education of
the mind is useless without the same education of the body, for both work as a whole to produce the
healthy soul. Socrates emphasis on this physical training is to show that physical fitness prevents
illness, encourages regimen, and provides a healthy atmosphere for the enrichment of the mind (80–
81). This physical training was to be aimed more towards war intended fitness, rather than the
athletic style training and the right balance that would produce a warrior that was not too strong or
too weak (87). Socrates did not want the guardians to become brutal or soft, but find the in–between
that would be guided by the education in music and poetry (86–87). Socrates claimed that through
education in poetry and music, the soul of the guardian will achieve the proper physical level due to
the elements of both that enchant the soul and make one just

Education Funding For Inner City Schools
While all these possibilities from providing increased educational funding to inner city schools seem
to provide a solution to the educational difficulties, the underclass is a multifaceted problem with
several contributing factors. For example, the issue of students dropping out of school is not only
affected by simply the quality of their education and resources. The appealing allure of drug dealing
and belonging to a gang, both behaviors that involve criminal actions that could lead to
incarceration, severely entice students from finishing their education. Furthermore, many children
lack familial support to complete school. Their families tend to consist of numerous high school
dropouts, and, therefore, lack the knowledge that comes from past experience leaving the student at
a severe disadvantage. Plus, some family members will even remove the students out of school
themselves, because they view the school as a waste of time. Even more detrimental to the
underclass are the longstanding problems of unplanned pregnancies, single parent families, racial
discrimination, and welfare dependency. With all these contributing obstacles that build upon one
another in mind, it may seem pointless to fix the educational issues, so why should society and the
government still pursue this option?
The answer is simple; there must be a starting point solution for this larger than life dilemma, and
increased educational funding is that solution. By increasing funding, society is not just

Municipal Economic Development Policy
When it comes municipal economic development policy, public officials pursue policies that will
improve the economic position and financial stability or prosperity of their city. Economic policy at
the sub–national level is often nonpartisan because these types of governments do not take on
redistributive or allocation policy. Rather, they take on economic policies that most everyone agrees
upon such as creating jobs or bringing in new tax revenue. (Kogan, 2014) These policymakers main
focus will aim to increase revenue flows as well as the creation of jobs. When it comes to economic
development, cities want to attract new businesses. With new businesses comes an increase in
revenue via tax revenue. These new businesses also bring with them new jobs. When there are new
jobs, there is a reduction in unemployment and poverty. One way municipalities aim to increase
their tax revenues is by making themselves competitive amongst other municipalities. They want to
be competitive to attract firms to locate or relocate within their limits. Policymakers increase their
city's appeal by offering tax credits and other incentives for the business to choose them.
Policymakers believe if they cities can attract new firms by investing money they will come out on
top in the end. In HBO's The Wire, we see local policymakers deciding whether they should invest
revenue in the expansion of a shipping port to bring in increased future revenue and also to make
them more competitive with

Advantages Of Growing Up In A Small Town
Some people believe it's better to grow up in a small town. Other people believe it's better to grow
up in a large city. I believe growing up in a large city exceeds being raised in a small town for
numerous reasons. One reason is that the large city provides education that is essential to obtain an
occupation. On the contrary, a rural town is unable to provide schooling of quality as high as the
great city. Another reason is that the city is able to comfort its citizens with its countless essential
services and amenities. Whereas, the small towns do not give even crucial services. Although, the
metropolitan area does contain its errors, they still can't amount to the excellent advantages a large
town has. Therefore, the city is more convenient than the country.
First of all, the primary important advantage a giant city has, that a town does not have, is
universities with great educational resources. For example; the highly prestigious universities in the
world are from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A large city is able to give the copious amount of pleasures life has, which rural areas cannot
provide. I once had the rare opportunity to visit a tiny town in the rural area. The town was
magnificent, but they lacked several of the amenities found in the urban area. The majority of the
populous lacked electricity; therefore, they didn't possess television, internet, or other electronic
items we use. The locals also had scarce fundamental resources, and since not various people decide
to establish their businesses there, it was harder to acquire items like musical instruments. Means of
transportation were also uncommon, when people needed to travel somewhere, they needed to walk.
On the other hand, in my experience living in a town I have realized that people have easy access to
methods of transport in the metropolitan area. Therefore, we can conclude that the metropolitan
section possesses more comforts and basic need

The City Of Arvada And The City Of Compton
The two cities selected for this report are to include the city of Arvada and the City of Compton.
Both coming from a long distance, the reports and statistical number between the two are jaw
dropping. The major broad topics that will be focused on will include but not limited to population,
education, and wealth statistics such as poverty level and income level.
The first city selected for this report is found just north west of the capital of Colorado. The city of
Arvada, was founded in 1870 and incorporated in 1904. A brief history and statistic on the city of
Arvada is that the city has grown in population size tremendously. Arvada has boomed in population

116,000 residents for its 32 square millage.
The second city also selected for this report is located just south of Los Angeles California, the City
of Compton founded on May 11, 1888 was the eighth city to be incorporated. A brief history on
Compton and its population is that according to the U.S Census Bureau in 2010, the total population
size was at 96,455 residents. This number of residents is lower than what was expected to see in
California. After further investigation in the website, after five–year span in 2015, the population of
Compton raised to 97,955 residents. Although the smaller population growth isn't what it seems to
be like in Arvada Colorado. But in 2016 in Compton California the total population size decreased
to 97,550 residents. A decrease in 400 residents within the one year span. Both cities roughly over
1,000 miles apart do share some similarities and differences between them.
The first pivotal concept between the two cities is on education. Education is key to moving up
within the world. Being more educated in this life means that you gain status, and gain power.
Education is a solution for many problems that may arise in the future and have a significant impact
on various studies including incarceration rate. Nonetheless, the data found on the percentage of
high school graduates between these two cities is very important

Pedro Noguera, a phenomenal urban sociologist and a professor at New York University confronts
the problems which exist in our nation's education system in his book, City Schools and the
American Dream: Reclaiming the Promise of Public Education. Noguera describes what he views to
be the main problems facing urban education and suggests strategies for improvement. From years
of experience as a teacher and school board member, he reflects on what he believes to be the real
problems. Noguera blames the school's failures on students, parents, and teachers which leads to
blame local government officials or policymakers. Noguera states in City Schools and the American
Dream, "The central argument of this book is that until there is a genuine commitment to address the
social context of schooling – to confront the urban condition – it will be impossible to bring about
significant and sustainable improvements in urban public schools" (pg.6). Noguera believes that we
must address the central problem to make any type of solutions for improvement.
In chapter one and two Noguera talks about how urban schools are failing and how there is
educational and achievement gaps. Noguera talks about Berkeley, Oakland, Richmond, and San
Francisco and uses examples from these cities to show readers how poverty, influence, and lack of
support impacts children 's educations. Noguera provided a very good chart on pg. 29 in the book.

Education Is Important For A Nation 's Most Populous City...
Education plays a significant role in contributing to Auckland's perception and engagement with
Waitangi Day. Within the wider context of New Zealand, Auckland is the nation's most populous
city with a wide demographic of multicultural individuals. With significant external immigration to
the city, future growth is to be expected. Therefore, it is important for the topic of Waitangi
education to be investigated, to ensure that systems are put in place for future pupils that will go
through the New Zealand schooling system, to ensure that they are accurately taught about the
Treaty of Waitangi, and that there a resources and systems put in place to accommodate for
individuals who arrive in New Zealand at an age that does not require schooling.
A review of the literature revealed that many individuals do not consider the teaching of the Treaty
to be significant. We believe that it is important for Aucklanders to be educated about what the treaty
means, why we as a nation should celebrate it, and how the treaty agreement was broken. Some key
benefits of being educated about the Treaty of Waitangi include, and are not limited to:
1. Helping us to shape and understand our cultural identity
2. Understanding previous and current agreements of our nation
3. Moving New Zealand forward in a progressive manner from what we have learnt about our past
New Zealanders and immigrants, who received treaty education, may feel a sense of belongingness
and connection to our past history.

Crime And Its Effects On Urban Areas
Crime is a familiar and perilous concern in American society, and crime damages the foundation of
this America. The ongoing population shift from rural to urban areas has helped to facilitate crime in
the United States through the decades. Showing the focused element and impact of crime in society
and the consequence of crime in urban areas, is to better understand the people, and knowing that
when criminals know the procedures of the crime they get new opportunity to do it. Examining the
crimes can give insight into who and why, but there are many extenuating circumstances which need
to be factored. Urbanization has given opportunity and capability for the criminal element to thrive.

This is in contrast to white–collar crime, which is generally committed by citizens of higher social

in a lower economic position. Although White collar crime can be extremely harmful, it is not
generally physical, or physically damaging and for the most part committed by people of a higher
social status. For the purposes of this paper, blue collar crime as it has been defined will be the
focus. Urban crime is being committed at a higher rate than rural crime, according to National

I evaluated the information in the document above based upon Moon's (2013) nine measures to
consider in comprehensive gifted education program. I think that FCCPS does a considerably good
job addressing these nine guidelines. However, I believe they should consider more non–
standardized materials and data while considering students for identification.
1. Multiple assessments should be given to represent the categories of giftedness identified in the
district's definition (Moon, 2013, p.133).

the Industrial Age, urban life was the new standard of living for many people. There was a large call
for workers in the cities so people moved to find jobs, and hoped to start a new life. Often times this
was not the case, as working conditions horrible especially for women and children. A new social
order came out of the Industrial Age as well–the middle class. In this social class women were the
heads of domestic life and were supposed to create the 'Ideal Home Life' for their children and
husbands, most of the time they had to work at the same time. Gains were also made in public

SUMMARY OF THE CASE STUDY
The case study is presenting a lawsuit of Anita Groener, who is suing Minister for Education
(hereinafter referred as 'the Minister') and the City of Dublin – Vocational Educational Committee
(hereinafter referred as 'the Education Committee'). The charge was based on the free movement of
workers, more specific, knowledge of an official language of the host country. Mrs. Groener was a
Netherlands' national, who wanted to work as a full–time art teacher.

The documents before Court contain that the teaching of art, like that of most other subjects taught
in public vocational education schools, is conducted essentially or indeed exclusively in the English
language. It follows that the knowledge of the Irish Language is not required for the performance of
the duties which teaching of the kind at issue specifically entails. The national court has to decide
whether the linguistic requirement in question is justified 'by reason of the nature of the post to be
filled'. The Irish Constitution says: 1) The Irish language as the national language is the first official
language, 2) The English language is recognized as a second official language, 3) Provision may be
made by law for the exclusive use of either of the said languages for any one or more official
purposes, either throughout the State or in any part thereof.
Irish is not spoken by the whole Irish population. The Irish government designed this policy to
maintain and to promote their identity and culture. Teachers have an essential role to play, through
teaching and by their participation in the daily life of the school and the privileged relationship
which they have with their pupils. In those circumstances it is reasonable to require them to have
some knowledge of the first national language. Community law requires that power to grant an
exemption is exercised by the Minister in a non–discriminatory manner. The principle of non–

Entre Les Murs: Inner City Education
Throughout popular culture, there are many representations of school systems and inner city life.
Laurent Cantet's film, Entre les murs (The Class), presents a view of the school system in France.
Entre les murs is based on the memoirs of François Bégaudeau, a teacher in the French suburbs.
Bégaudeau also plays the teacher of the film, M Marin. Entre les murs has many similarities to the
representations of inner city life presented in The Corner and therefore shows how similar inner
cities are around the world. Both representations also show attempts by governments to improve the
situations within inner cities. Laurent Cantet tried to make Entre les murs as true to the real situation

in the United States, where the wealthy families live on the outskirts of cities, the wealthy families
of Paris live towards the middle of the city. In the twentieth district, 37.2 percent of families are
low–income and 51.1 percent earn around the average income (Rice 35). This skew towards the less
well off families reflects the economic situation of many of the families in the inner cities of the
United States, especially Baltimore. The students in the film Entre les murs show many similarities
to the students described in The Corner. For example, both students have a language that is unique to
themselves and very different from the language of their teachers. In The Corner, it is most likely a
form of urban slang. The French students use "verlan," a way of speaking in which certain words are
made into slang words by reversing the order of the sounds (Rice 65). M Marin, being a French
teacher, encourages the students to speak proper French. He often asks them to repeat certain of their
sentences using common French words. The students in Entre les murs also are like those in The

The Positive And Negative Effects Of Urbanization
Urbanization is taking place all over the world in the modern time. However, why does urbanization
happen? According to the information about urbanization on the internet, there are several positive
and negative effects of urbanization.
Effect#1: Economic
– The Growth of Economy
The natural resources could be used from rural areas. Urban and rural area can develop together to
achieve the growth of economy. For instance, the development of the food industry depends on that
of agriculture, which rural areas can afford the agriculture. In this way, urban and rural area grow
together.

Transportation is the movement of people and goods from one place to another, people must need it.
However, because there are lots of people take underground and buses, which makes overcrowded.

The City Of Orlando Florida
Since the humble beginnings of the American industrial revolution, the urban city has been the
pinnacle of rapid development and robust growth. Despite the efforts of notable city planners such
as Sir Ebenezer Howard, Peter Calthorpe and Andres Duany the potential of true sustainable
development has not been realized by the majority of urban cities. The inevitable question asserts
how cities can continue growth and development while corroborating the triple bottom line as a
framework for virtually every city.
The urban city by modern definition is characterized by a broken community structure, dangerous
high density, and a lack of sustainable design. The city of Orlando Florida is a quintessential

Education
At the foundation of every issue in the broad scope of sustainability is a fundamental lack of proper
environmental education as an individual, which ultimately permeates into all of society. The
education referred to here is not simply the standardized tests, memorizing and essays of the modern
day classroom but the education, which takes place at home. As children, there is a universal myth
that has been passed down since the golden age of the industrial revolution. This idea of the
American dream informs virtually every decision Americans make and how society is structured.
Simply put: "Get an education, get a Job, have children, acquire wealth, capital and leave a legacy
before you die." The fundamental problem with this is that there is no mention of our most basic
responsibility, as environmental stewards. In short this anthropocentric paradigm acts a rearguard for
sustainable development and begins as early as the conception of language in a child's life.
Over the course of the next 15 years there are very simple yet, crucial strategies that must be in
place to amend not the foundational goals of America or the American dream but rather, the means
of achieving it. This calls first for a new approach to the environmental movement: disregard
everything that has been labeled and stigmatized as environmentalism. Instead the education
infrastructure must be replaced with the institution of logic and respect for

Abstract
This investigation explores gentrification within the Trinity–Spadina Ward of Toronto. The research
question of 'To what extent is gentrification present in the Liberty Village neighborhood of Toronto?'
largely focuses on redevelopment, land use and population demographics. Based on the comparison
of four indicators between Ward 20 and the City of Toronto, it was hypothesised that gentrification
is a prominent agent of change in the Liberty Village neighborhood.

Gentrification has a positive effect on a community in the sense that it ameliorates the local
economy. In lower income neighborhoods, the expansion of businesses and creation of jobs is
limited by the deficiency of monetary flow. However, as wealthier residents relocate to the area and
invest money in the community, businesses develop. Overtime, this trend continues and results in
economic development as well as more jobs, which benefits the community. Secondly, the process
of gentrification typically results in a lower crime rate. This is because gentrification involves the
attainment of vacant properties in order to build new developments. Therefore there will be a
decrease in vacant properties which typically attract crime. Additionally, an increase in population
results in an increase in local government revenue from taxes which can be spent on law

that they are intelligent. King mentions Eugene Talmadge, whom of which King believed had a
better mind than many in Georgia, yet Talmadge thought as King as an inferior being, but he was
still considered educated from every logical stand point. Ethos– "We are prone to let our mental life
become invaded by legions of half–truths, prejudices, and propaganda." Many decisions within a
day are controlled and guided by the things that have already been said to be 'good'. In order to be
good and accepted in society it has to come from source when is credible and reliable but for that to
happen someone has to have their own opinion on a matter but with the education system the way it

Country Living Vs. City Living
Country living vs. City living
The country and the city both offer a place to live, but the pollution, entertainment, crime and
education; are all reasons why the country is a better place to live and raise a family. A country girl
myself, I currently live in the city with my family, but I would give anything to raise my sons in the
country. Although much can be learned in the city, you cannot get that small town morale here nor
the manners that come from being raised in a small southern town.
Despite, there different locations the country has less pollution than the city on any given day. With
far less freeways and highways to emit toxins and pollution into our air the country offers clean,
breathable air and fresh winds from all the trees. In the city we sacrifice trees for highways and
buildings. Both of which are harming our ozone layer and reducing our green air intact. The hustle
and bustle on city freeways create high traffic and idle cars just sitting. This chaotic atmosphere cuts
out time to get familiar with coworkers as one is always in a rush to get in and started on work. I
would rather clean air and a stress free commute to work any day. Also, the ability to get into work
in a timely manner and be able to converse with coworkers is a wonderful feeling. Besides, working
with coworkers who are merely strangers could be another reason why work here is so stressful.
Compared to the city, the country has far less crime and many feel comfortable leaving their doors

Comparing Laoag City And Davis California
Laoag City, Philippines and Davis California are separated with approximately 8207 miles apart
across the Pacific Ocean. Even though the United States and the Philippines is vastly different in
many areas, comparing cities will give as a wider perspective of the comparisons and differences

quality education but yet they are both different in standards and the mindset of students.
The United States of America has influenced the educational system of the Philippines. Laoag city

classes on a Saturday than a fraction of the students here at UC Davis who even skips regular school

Comparison Between City Life and Country Life
Essay question: city life and country life Final draft
Everyone has a different lifestyle. People sometimes have to decide where they want to live. Some
people prefer to live in the city while other people choose to live in the countryside. Their choice
depends upon their bachground. City lifestyle and country lifestyle are two different types of living.
Although, these two types of living differ from each other by environment, job opportunities and
cost of living; they also have similar features such as daily routine, values and people live and work
in these areas.

Another two differences between these places of living are job opportunities and cost of living.
There are more job opportunities in the city. People in the countryside have their farms. They grow
different vegetables, fruits and make money on it. For instance, In Mekong delta farmers make two
crops a year. They are Summer–Autumn yield and Winter–Spring yield ("What's the difference",
n.d.). Between these seasons of crop there is a distance. They do not do anything during this period.
In contrast, most people move to the city in order to find a job because it is easier there. For person
who has a good education, the city is the best way to earn money because different offices,
companies, factories are located in cities ("What's the difference", n.d.). For example, there are
ChoRay hospital, Sacombank, Vietnam Airlines, National University in Ho Chi Minh city and these
companies usually hire masters, doctors, engineers ("What's the difference", n.d.). Also another
difference between them is a cost of living. The cost of living in the city is higher than the
countryside, for instance goods are more expensive there ("Rural area", n.d.). In the country, most
people have the sufficient economy. They can grow plants and breed animals so expenditures are
lower and they can live on their own. The country life is simple and comfortable. Nevertheless, to
rent a house, to buy food and to use a transport is more expensive in the city but the

Planning of any city is one of the most fundamental things to be considered before the development

Working For Inner City Education Foundation Public Charter...
In many aspects of life, it is essential that you work with other individuals as a team. You can work
in a team whether it is school, work, or your personal life. This year I started working for Inner City
Education Foundation public charter schools, specifically ICEF Inglewood Elementary Academy.
The school has approximately 40 staff members that were all placed together by the director of the
school. There are multiple classifications at my job such as instructional assistants, teachers, office
staff, intervention specialists, operations, and janitors, but we all operate as one unit. Through the
five stages of team development, our team developed and continues to develop into a successful
team.
Forming Stage: When I first started working for the school in August, I never met any of the people
who would be working at the school along with me. The first day I arrived to work I learned that the
new team I was going to be a part of at ICEF Inglewood Elementary had 96% of new staff. During
this time I realized the team was in the forming stage, we were all getting acquainted and oriented
with each other. The team leaders aided in this stage by providing a breakfast followed by games for
the whole staff. During the breakfast, making conversation I felt the feeling of uncertainty I was not
sure if I would like it or fit in. After breakfast, we played games that were used as ice breakers. The
icebreakers we played began to make me feel comfortable and realize I had a lot in

The New York City Department Of Education
The New York City Department of Education (DOE) serves 1.1 million students across schools
("About Us"). During the Bloomberg administration more than 140 schools were closed with no
indication that the "administration's closure policy improved outcomes for students in the city's
struggling schools" ("Standardized Testing Is Counterproductive, Corrosive and Corrupting").
Several studies have detailed the damage and disruption the city's closure policy had on struggling
schools in high–need populations with significant academic challenges (Fruchter). Bloomberg's
education policies were guided by The No Child Left Behind law, which required standardized test–
based school reform including annual testing, greater flexibility for states and increased teacher
qualifications in order to receive federal funding (Ujifusa). This standardized test–based school
reform trend continued under the Obama administration 's with the Race to the Top program. Race
to the Top rewarded states that used exams and data systems to track the performance of students
and teachers, among other initiatives (Cite).
These accountability policies paved the way in 2007, when the Bloomberg administration
introduced its School Progress Reports and Achievement Reporting and Innovation System (ARIS).
The school's report card graded schools on a scale of A through F based on three factors: school
environment survey (15%), student academic performance (25%) and student academic progress

disconnect between the increase in homes and the decline of occupied homes. This could be
contributed to the fact that perhaps that although more homes are being built the population cannot

Midyear Essay Rewrite The expansion of trade led to the urbanization of Europe in the late Middle
Ages through the development of towns, guilds, and the rise of education. Urbanization is the
process by which cities form and expand.
As trade expanded, a city's popularity could grow and more merchants would want to travel there to
receive more business and customers. Paris was located at the cross of major trade routes and
merchants who set up there could make more profit as more people would pass through Paris
compared to other cities. This led to more merchants wanting to set up in Paris and Paris grew to be
a large, influential city. The rise in Paris's economy – from the merchants' and customers'

that required travel had people travel together in groups to prevent robberies and ensure the safety of

felt safer and were willing to trade more. The expansion of trade allowed guilds to form in the first

Urban slum and physical environment shaped a sharp contrast between the rich and poor. Social

Irish courses are compulsory for children receiving primary education and optional for those

government wants to protect their heritage, they can do the same thing Slovenia did, when we were

Slovenians had to learn it at school. A lot of literature was written in Serbian–Croatian language, the

Dudley Street Neighborhood

  • 1. Dudley Street Neighborhood The rise of industrialization brought the ability to mass produce goods and thus able to sustain a larger population, a population that was expanding out and away from the city. White veterans returning from World War II received access to GI bill, which afforded them new housing, that was being built more quickly than ever thanks to prefabricated parts, manufactured in factories. Thus with the creation of the suburbs we see this movement away from the dense city and into the surrounding area. Neighborhoods with Black families could no longer receive any loans from the bank due to red lining. Money was being invested in building up the suburbs instead, where the land was cheap and so were the taxes. This lead to a sharp decrease in the value of land within in the city. Combined with red lining policies, many people were soon upside down on their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative is a perfect example of such efforts in Boston, Massachusetts. The neighborhood was plighted with all the aforementioned disadvantages, such as red lining, burnt down houses, and then the empty lots became a dumping grounds. Through the neighborhoods efforts, they raised awareness of their issue and got changes in policy to prevent dumping. They also utilized imminent domain to reclaim the abandoned lots in their neighborhood and then through the creation of their own Community Development Corporation were able to build new affordable housing in its place. Though all this, they were also able to get banks to reinvest in the area so they can continue to develop. Other cities can and have utilized similar methods and practices but the results are deeply dependent on the participation of community members and the willingness of the city to assist. DSNI was able to circumnavigate the city's lack of cooperation in investing through the creation of their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Public Education Is A Continuing Urban Challenge For Many... Meeting the general standards that constitute sufficient public education is a continuing urban challenge for many cities. Of particular interest is the city of Detroit, who's deteriorating school buildings have become a national focus in recent years. The public education system in Detroit has continued to disappoint, and stands as a strong example of some the problems with public education that inner–city residents face. However, is it the inner–city itself that is the cause of the problem? Or a host of other institutional and social factors related to city life? In part, we can answer this question by comparing and contrasting Detroit's urban school district with Johnston Iowa's suburban school district. One way to assess the overall productivity of a particular school district is to evaluate the results of annual standardized testing enforced by the No Child Left Behind Act. The results of these tests are measured the same across the country using the National Assessment of Education Progress (336). Because the results are calculated against the same standards across city and state lines, it is easy to compare and contrast annual results across districts. In Detroit, for the academic year of 2014–15, only 17.2 percent of all 8th grade students scored proficient in reading and only 6.9 percent of all 8th grade students scored proficient in mathematics ("Annual education report Detroit city school district M–STEP grades 3–8," 2016). This is compared to an annual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Plato's Education System For The Just City Madeline Palumbo 05/01/2015 HUMN 220 Paper #2–Prompt #3 The Kallipolis: Plato's Educational System for the Just City A topic that has circulated in the minds of many for centuries, is the idea of education and the proper ways to go about applying it. In more than one way, education has had a major part in forming the structure of history and the molding of human beings from the very beginning. The philosophical journey as conveyed in Plato's Republic, begins to utilize the concepts of justice, injustice, virtue, and apply them to the foundations of education for human beings in the ideal society. Plato tells of the account of Socrates during the discussion between Glaucon, Thrasymachus, Polemarchus, and Adeimantus on the definition of justice ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The key reason being that physicality is the reflection of a healthy soul (80). As to be expected, this physical training was necessary for the guardians because of their warrior positions and responsibility to protect the city from threats of outsiders and insiders alike (90). The education of the mind is useless without the same education of the body, for both work as a whole to produce the healthy soul. Socrates emphasis on this physical training is to show that physical fitness prevents illness, encourages regimen, and provides a healthy atmosphere for the enrichment of the mind (80– 81). This physical training was to be aimed more towards war intended fitness, rather than the athletic style training and the right balance that would produce a warrior that was not too strong or too weak (87). Socrates did not want the guardians to become brutal or soft, but find the in–between that would be guided by the education in music and poetry (86–87). Socrates claimed that through education in poetry and music, the soul of the guardian will achieve the proper physical level due to the elements of both that enchant the soul and make one just ... • 7. Education Funding For Inner City Schools While all these possibilities from providing increased educational funding to inner city schools seem to provide a solution to the educational difficulties, the underclass is a multifaceted problem with several contributing factors. For example, the issue of students dropping out of school is not only affected by simply the quality of their education and resources. The appealing allure of drug dealing and belonging to a gang, both behaviors that involve criminal actions that could lead to incarceration, severely entice students from finishing their education. Furthermore, many children lack familial support to complete school. Their families tend to consist of numerous high school dropouts, and, therefore, lack the knowledge that comes from past experience leaving the student at a severe disadvantage. Plus, some family members will even remove the students out of school themselves, because they view the school as a waste of time. Even more detrimental to the underclass are the longstanding problems of unplanned pregnancies, single parent families, racial discrimination, and welfare dependency. With all these contributing obstacles that build upon one another in mind, it may seem pointless to fix the educational issues, so why should society and the government still pursue this option? The answer is simple; there must be a starting point solution for this larger than life dilemma, and increased educational funding is that solution. By increasing funding, society is not just ... • 9. Municipal Economic Development Policy When it comes municipal economic development policy, public officials pursue policies that will improve the economic position and financial stability or prosperity of their city. Economic policy at the sub–national level is often nonpartisan because these types of governments do not take on redistributive or allocation policy. Rather, they take on economic policies that most everyone agrees upon such as creating jobs or bringing in new tax revenue. (Kogan, 2014) These policymakers main focus will aim to increase revenue flows as well as the creation of jobs. When it comes to economic development, cities want to attract new businesses. With new businesses comes an increase in revenue via tax revenue. These new businesses also bring with them new jobs. When there are new jobs, there is a reduction in unemployment and poverty. One way municipalities aim to increase their tax revenues is by making themselves competitive amongst other municipalities. They want to be competitive to attract firms to locate or relocate within their limits. Policymakers increase their city's appeal by offering tax credits and other incentives for the business to choose them. Policymakers believe if they cities can attract new firms by investing money they will come out on top in the end. In HBO's The Wire, we see local policymakers deciding whether they should invest revenue in the expansion of a shipping port to bring in increased future revenue and also to make them more competitive with ... • 11. Advantages Of Growing Up In A Small Town Some people believe it's better to grow up in a small town. Other people believe it's better to grow up in a large city. I believe growing up in a large city exceeds being raised in a small town for numerous reasons. One reason is that the large city provides education that is essential to obtain an occupation. On the contrary, a rural town is unable to provide schooling of quality as high as the great city. Another reason is that the city is able to comfort its citizens with its countless essential services and amenities. Whereas, the small towns do not give even crucial services. Although, the metropolitan area does contain its errors, they still can't amount to the excellent advantages a large town has. Therefore, the city is more convenient than the country. First of all, the primary important advantage a giant city has, that a town does not have, is universities with great educational resources. For example; the highly prestigious universities in the world are from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A large city is able to give the copious amount of pleasures life has, which rural areas cannot provide. I once had the rare opportunity to visit a tiny town in the rural area. The town was magnificent, but they lacked several of the amenities found in the urban area. The majority of the populous lacked electricity; therefore, they didn't possess television, internet, or other electronic items we use. The locals also had scarce fundamental resources, and since not various people decide to establish their businesses there, it was harder to acquire items like musical instruments. Means of transportation were also uncommon, when people needed to travel somewhere, they needed to walk. On the other hand, in my experience living in a town I have realized that people have easy access to methods of transport in the metropolitan area. Therefore, we can conclude that the metropolitan section possesses more comforts and basic need ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Both coming from a long distance, the reports and statistical number between the two are jaw dropping. The major broad topics that will be focused on will include but not limited to population, education, and wealth statistics such as poverty level and income level. The first city selected for this report is found just north west of the capital of Colorado. The city of Arvada, was founded in 1870 and incorporated in 1904. A brief history and statistic on the city of Arvada is that the city has grown in population size tremendously. The word megaregion could be used because as of last year the population has grown roughly by 116,000 residents for its 32 square millage. The second city also selected for this report is located just south of Los Angeles California, the City of Compton founded on May 11, 1888 was the eighth city to be incorporated. A brief history on Compton and its population is that according to the U.S Census Bureau in 2010, the total population size was at 96,455 residents. This number of residents is lower than what was expected to see in California. After further investigation in the website, after five–year span in 2015, the population of Compton raised to 97,955 residents. Although the smaller population growth isn't what it seems to be like in Arvada Colorado. But in 2016 in Compton California the total population size decreased to 97,550 residents. A decrease in 400 residents within the one year span. Both cities roughly over 1,000 miles apart do share some similarities and differences between them. The first pivotal concept between the two cities is on education. Education is key to moving up within the world. Being more educated in this life means that you gain status, and gain power. Education is a solution for many problems that may arise in the future and have a significant impact on various studies including incarceration rate. Pedro Noguera, a phenomenal urban sociologist and a professor at New York University confronts the problems which exist in our nation's education system in his book, City Schools and the American Dream: Reclaiming the Promise of Public Education. Noguera describes what he views to be the main problems facing urban education and suggests strategies for improvement. From years of experience as a teacher and school board member, he reflects on what he believes to be the real problems. Noguera blames the school's failures on students, parents, and teachers which leads to blame local government officials or policymakers. Noguera states in City Schools and the American Dream, "The central argument of this book is that until there is a genuine commitment to address the social context of schooling – to confront the urban condition – it will be impossible to bring about significant and sustainable improvements in urban public schools" (pg.6). Noguera believes that we must address the central problem to make any type of solutions for improvement. In chapter one and two Noguera talks about how urban schools are failing and how there is educational and achievement gaps. Noguera talks about Berkeley, Oakland, Richmond, and San Francisco and uses examples from these cities to show readers how poverty, influence, and lack of support impacts children 's educations. Noguera provided a very good chart on pg. 29 in the book. The chart shows the economic profile of all four cities in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Education Is Important For A Nation 's Most Populous City... Education plays a significant role in contributing to Auckland's perception and engagement with Waitangi Day. Within the wider context of New Zealand, Auckland is the nation's most populous city with a wide demographic of multicultural individuals. With significant external immigration to the city, future growth is to be expected. Therefore, it is important for the topic of Waitangi education to be investigated, to ensure that systems are put in place for future pupils that will go through the New Zealand schooling system, to ensure that they are accurately taught about the Treaty of Waitangi, and that there a resources and systems put in place to accommodate for individuals who arrive in New Zealand at an age that does not require schooling. A review of the literature revealed that many individuals do not consider the teaching of the Treaty to be significant. We believe that it is important for Aucklanders to be educated about what the treaty means, why we as a nation should celebrate it, and how the treaty agreement was broken. Some key benefits of being educated about the Treaty of Waitangi include, and are not limited to: 1. Helping us to shape and understand our cultural identity 2. Understanding previous and current agreements of our nation 3. Moving New Zealand forward in a progressive manner from what we have learnt about our past New Zealanders and immigrants, who received treaty education, may feel a sense of belongingness and connection to our past history. ... The ongoing population shift from rural to urban areas has helped to facilitate crime in the United States through the decades. Showing the focused element and impact of crime in society and the consequence of crime in urban areas, is to better understand the people, and knowing that when criminals know the procedures of the crime they get new opportunity to do it. Examining the crimes can give insight into who and why, but there are many extenuating circumstances which need to be factored. (Department of Homeland Security 2017) Race will be defined as white and non–white. Crime also needs to be defined as "white collar" or "blue collar", this allows for differentiation between who is committing which types of crime. the Letric Law Library defines white and blue collar crime as, "Blue–collar crime is a term given to criminal acts more likely to be committed by citizens of lower social class in society, such as those which inflict direct harm on the person or property of others. This is in contrast to white–collar crime, which is generally committed by citizens of higher social class, who are more likely to be presented with the opportunity to commit such crimes." (Blue Collar Crime). Blue collar crimes are more likely to be of a violent nature and committed by people in a lower economic position. Although White collar crime can be extremely harmful, it is not generally physical, or physically damaging and for the most part committed by people of a higher social status. For the purposes of this paper, blue collar crime as it has been defined will be the focus. Urban crime is being committed at a higher rate than rural crime, according to National Crime Vitim's Survey, "In 2012, the rate of violent victimizations reported by victims to the NCVS was 3,240 per 100,000 persons' age 12 or older in urban areas, 2,380 per 100,000 persons' age 12 or older in suburban areas, and 2,090 per 100,000 ... Falls Church City's Local Plan for the Education of the Gifted can be found at the following address: https://docs.google.com/a/fccps.org/file/d/0B7vaFg7PcgKyTGs3T3NZcGtaRjQ/edit I evaluated the information in the document above based upon Moon's (2013) nine measures to consider in comprehensive gifted education program. I think that FCCPS does a considerably good job addressing these nine guidelines. However, I believe they should consider more non– standardized materials and data while considering students for identification. 1. Multiple assessments should be given to represent the categories of giftedness identified in the district's definition (Moon, 2013, p.133). According to the FCCPS definition of giftedness, the will "screen to identify and to appropriately place student with specific aptitudes and achievement in the pertinent and academically advances programs (...Language Arts, Mathematics)". Students must receive between the 93rd–99th percentiles on Specific Academic Aptitude assessments, or the average of their scores must be between the 93rd and 99th percentiles. FCCPS uses multiple assessments to test for SAA in reading and math including: SAGES, Raven, STAR Math, STAR Reading, CogATs, and the SOLs (FCCPS, Local Plan for the Education of the Gifted, p. 7). 2 & 3. Use the most current versions of standardized tests that are going to be used to make a decision about admission into a gifted program and that norms are up–to–date and a good representation of ... • 23. Choose Two Aspects Of Life During The Industrial Age By: Aria Lugo, Alexandra Barrera, AriAnna Camoia, and Kristen Allen Historical Context: During the Industrial Age, urban life was the new standard of living for many people. There was a large call for workers in the cities so people moved to find jobs, and hoped to start a new life. Often times this was not the case, as working conditions horrible especially for women and children. A new social order came out of the Industrial Age as well–the middle class. SUMMARY OF THE CASE STUDY The case study is presenting a lawsuit of Anita Groener, who is suing Minister for Education (hereinafter referred as 'the Minister') and the City of Dublin – Vocational Educational Committee (hereinafter referred as 'the Education Committee'). The charge was based on the free movement of workers, more specific, knowledge of an official language of the host country. Mrs. Groener was a Netherlands' national, who wanted to work as a full–time art teacher. The documents before Court contain that the teaching of art, like that of most other subjects taught in public vocational education schools, is conducted essentially or indeed exclusively in the English language. It follows that the knowledge of the Irish Language is not required for the performance of the duties which teaching of the kind at issue specifically entails. The national court has to decide whether the linguistic requirement in question is justified 'by reason of the nature of the post to be filled'. The Irish Constitution says: 1) The Irish language as the national language is the first official language, 2) The English language is recognized as a second official language, 3) Provision may be made by law for the exclusive use of either of the said languages for any one or more official purposes, either throughout the State or in any part thereof. Irish is not spoken by the whole Irish population. The Irish government designed this policy to maintain and to promote their identity and culture. Teachers have an essential role to play, through teaching and by their participation in the daily life of the school and the privileged relationship which they have with their pupils. Laurent Cantet's film, Entre les murs (The Class), presents a view of the school system in France. Entre les murs is based on the memoirs of François Bégaudeau, a teacher in the French suburbs. Bégaudeau also plays the teacher of the film, M Marin. Entre les murs has many similarities to the representations of inner city life presented in The Corner and therefore shows how similar inner cities are around the world. The students in the film Entre les murs show many similarities to the students described in The Corner. For example, both students have a language that is unique to themselves and very different from the language of their teachers. In The Corner, it is most likely a form of urban slang. The French students use "verlan," a way of speaking in which certain words are made into slang words by reversing the order of the sounds (Rice 65). M Marin, being a French teacher, encourages the students to speak proper French. He often asks them to repeat certain of their sentences using common French words. Despite the efforts of notable city planners such as Sir Ebenezer Howard, Peter Calthorpe and Andres Duany the potential of true sustainable development has not been realized by the majority of urban cities. The inevitable question asserts how cities can continue growth and development while corroborating the triple bottom line as a framework for virtually every city. Education At the foundation of every issue in the broad scope of sustainability is a fundamental lack of proper environmental education as an individual, which ultimately permeates into all of society. The education referred to here is not simply the standardized tests, memorizing and essays of the modern day classroom but the education, which takes place at home. As children, there is a universal myth that has been passed down since the golden age of the industrial revolution. This idea of the American dream informs virtually every decision Americans make and how society is structured. Simply put: "Get an education, get a Job, have children, acquire wealth, capital and leave a legacy before you die." The fundamental problem with this is that there is no mention of our most basic responsibility, as environmental stewards. In short this anthropocentric paradigm acts a rearguard for sustainable development and begins as early as the conception of language in a child's life. Over the course of the next 15 years there are very simple yet, crucial strategies that must be in place to amend not the foundational goals of America or the American dream but rather, the means of achieving it. This calls first for a new approach to the environmental movement: disregard everything that has been labeled and stigmatized as environmentalism. However, as wealthier residents relocate to the area and invest money in the community, businesses develop. Overtime, this trend continues and results in economic development as well as more jobs, which benefits the community. Secondly, the process of gentrification typically results in a lower crime rate. Bailey Nielsen Galloway College Composition 20 January 2015 Education in Society Within the speeches The Purpose of Education by Martin Luther King Jr. and Wiley College vs. Oklahoma City College from the movie The Great Debaters, there are many different points that can be identified as ethos, pathos, or logos. Logos– In The Purpose of Education, King talks about how even though a person may be educated it doesn't necessarily mean that they are intelligent. King mentions Eugene Talmadge, whom of which King believed had a better mind than many in Georgia, yet Talmadge thought as King as an inferior being, but he was still considered educated from every logical stand point. Ethos– "We are prone to let our mental life become invaded by legions of half–truths, prejudices, and propaganda." Many decisions within a day are controlled and guided by the things that have already been said to be 'good'. In order to be good and accepted in society it has to come from source when is credible and reliable but for that to happen someone has to have their own opinion on a matter but with the education system the way it is education is bias knowledge. Pathos– For the Wiley College vs. Oklahoma City College debate, the resolve is "Negroes should be admitted to state universities." With far less freeways and highways to emit toxins and pollution into our air the country offers clean, breathable air and fresh winds from all the trees. In the city we sacrifice trees for highways and buildings. Both of which are harming our ozone layer and reducing our green air intact. The hustle and bustle on city freeways create high traffic and idle cars just sitting. This chaotic atmosphere cuts out time to get familiar with coworkers as one is always in a rush to get in and started on work. I would rather clean air and a stress free commute to work any day. Also, the ability to get into work in a timely manner and be able to converse with coworkers is a wonderful feeling. This led to more merchants wanting to set up in Paris and Paris grew to be a large, influential city. The rise in Paris's economy – from the merchants' and customers' transactions –led to Paris's wealth, and its expansion and urbanization. Guilds helped to ensure that everything was fair and members were being taken care of. • 71. Education Inequality In New York City When one thinks of the word "inequality", some things that come to mind are racial inequality, gender inequality, economic inequality, marriage inequality, or social inequality. These inequalities have evolved into movements and revolutions, making strides for future generations to live in a nation that supports them. However, when it comes to making strides for our future generations to be successful, the same statement cannot be made. This is due to the fact that our nation and government aren't concerned with the welfare and success of our present generation. One inequality that hasn't delivered a sense of urgency to be tackled by our nation, and specifically our city of New York, is Education Inequality. Horace Mann, "The Father of American ... • 73. City Of God Sociology The city of God tells the story of teenager's crime in the slums of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, in different time stages from 1960s to 1980s. The director shows an area full of violence's, sex, crimes, from Rocket's perspective. Severe polarization of wealth, urban crime and youth gang are revealed in urban slum due to the globalizations of this city. This movie leads to people to consider two aspects of the issues from the movie. Those are the importance of education, and the influence of the environments. Urban slum and physical environment shaped a sharp contrast between the rich and poor. Social abnormalities are reflected in this film, which are caused by the rapid development of Brazil's economy. The slums in the city, the "edge" zones in the city, are the abominable products of the process in rapid acceleration of urbanization. The people can be separated into two groups, which are the high education group of citizens, and another group is the citizen with no knowledge. This issue is the most significant reason for the gap between the rich and poor. The citizens who are high education can catch up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The origin of the dispute was the Minister's refusal to appoint Mrs. Groener to a permanent full–time post as an art teacher employed by the Education Committee after she had failed a test, intended to asses her knowledge of the Irish language. I think that if a person would like to work or teach in Ireland and if the knowledge of the Irish Language is not required for the performance of the teaching duties, he or she should get a full–time job. Not every Irish person can speak the Irish language, why should foreigners have to learn it? The Irish courses are compulsory for children receiving primary education and optional for those receiving secondary education. I think this can be the case of an indirect discrimination. If the government wants to protect their heritage, they can do the same thing Slovenia did, when we were in Yugoslavia. The large part of the country spoke Serbian–Croatian language and that is why Slovenians had to learn it at school. A lot of literature was written in Serbian–Croatian language, the military officers spoke Serbian–Croatian, so we had to adjust to the circumstances and learn a language, which was foreign to us. However, Slovenia and the Republic of Macedonia were the only two states, who did not have only Serbian–Croatian as an official language; they also had their own language, which was the first official language of the state. Comparing to Ireland, nevertheless, there was no problem for a Serb to work in Slovenia, even though he could not speak Slovene, for Serbian–Croatian was acknowledged as a second official language. Slovenia became independent in the year 1991, so Slovene became the only official language. I think that the way things ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
