Reader/Text Title: Text 4 - Learning from Las
Vegas
Synopsis No: 1
Author: Robert Venturi
In this book, as asked by the writer himself on how architects envision things from the existing landscape
tends to become so sort of revolutionary achievement. Thus,I would absolutely agree to the writer’s
assertion regarding architects throughout the historic timeline and now even, would alternatively change,
than bettering the existing environment. Moving on, the elements such as heavily relying on signage and
symbols plays a huge role as it offers much significance in Las Vegas. Modernists have got a
tendency to focus greater on spaces rather than relying on the tradition of iconology, this has resulted
them to critique on why symbolism can be more dominant than forms. Expressed by the author, that the
dominance of scale and space, representational architecture, and commercial persuasion response, and
subtle expression in complex settings are the reason why symbolism took over forms. This can be said
because, it is a common sight that signage’s are bigger that the building itself. To me symbols and
signage should have similar importance as to building plans, circulation or programmings and never to be
uncared-for as it plays an important role for the users.
Moreover, it has been said that Las Vegas is to the strip and Rome is to the piazza. From this statement
theorists have distinguished immense scale and large open areas. The A&P parking lots serve as
symbols and signs for drivers as it provides convenience and direction to use parking lines to the building.
Furthermore, the foreground fact of the symbolism in Las Veges are the persuasion difference and
landscape as the architecture.
In conclusion, the authors are advising architects to discard their rigid views and instead be open minded
to the idea of the use of architecture as symbol that effectuates the requirement of a large scale
commercial setting and its ability to communicate effectively through signs and symbols.

Reader/Text Title: Text 3 - The Geometry of
Feeling
Synopsis No: 2
Author: Juhani Pallasma
The writer has firstly addressed on how contemporary architecture is failing to stimulate the feelings that it
should during that day and time. The author feels that architecture has lost its association to its intentional
background by unfavorably evolving into a specialist profession that believes itself to be a form of free
artistic expression. I feel that the main purpose the author desires to awaken is that it is wrong for architects
to value form over experience. Hence, by placing significance on form alone, the experience of the
architecture that should be put to more value of has alternatively become secondary thing.
Furthermore, the author discusses architecture as imagination during which he offers deeper interpretation
towards architecture. To the author, the feel of the design isn't felt physically, however through the
images transmitted by forms and their emotive forces. So, what is trying to be mentioned to the readers is
that architects shouldn't become too rattled in their pursuance of forms that defy the normal however
instead recognize that it's typically the simplest of forms that hold the ability to evoke the imagination
of those experiencing it. It is also stated that the firsthand experiences of architecture are connected to the
emotional feelings of people whom which automatically create images of a building.
To conclude my synopsis,I feel that the author is giving proper advice on the decision to architects who
have forgotten the importance of the experiences related to architecture. Architecture isn't judged by its form
or appearance alone, and this to me is that the underlining purpose that separates an architect from an
artist. However, this elevated position implies that architects cannot design as unconcerned people as they
hold a responsibility to the those that can use their buildings similarly as the encompassing context within
which they design.

Reader/Text Title: Text 1 - Urbanism as a Way of
Life
Synopsis No: 3
Author: Louis Wirth
The author begins by emphasizing on the thought of urbanism as a illustration of the way of life. His main
focus was the thought of urbanism and its parts that appears to be on the far side mere to a physical
structure of a town, its main characteristic cultural establishments reaches further into it to uncover the un
discovered parts which appreciate the massive population size, social heterogeneity and population density.
Moreover, there are clear distinction of personalities between the rural and the urban individual as they also
come from a variant ways of living. Thus, the author acclaimed that town individuals are considered being
more socially tolerant than rural individuals however at a similar time, they're additional impersonal and on
the face of it less friendly as a results of their adaptation to a forceful manner amendment that probably
prevents intimate relationships.
In conclusion, I feel that urban living has immensely been adapting and expanding to become a way of life
not only in modern cities but also slowly to the rural areas. From this book, I realized that Loius Writh takes
into considerations about the elements of urbanism that are rarely explored and what was mentioned was
truly on point to what I can observe these days.
