Kenneth Frampton ‘Towards Critical Regionalism’: Six Points for an Architecture of Resistance. No.4, 5 & 6 pp 24-29
1. "Exquisite and complex, magnificent Burchoan houses are everywhere, but when it comes to the
past 70 years, deal with poverty, massive development of cities, slums and so on, architect does
not seem to have made much contribution to it. Architects are just building houses, meaningless,
senseless houses. " - Kenneth Frampton. This is what the author thinks about what is architecture
in this contemporary society. According to the author, it is important that architects analyze native
character and reinterpret it with modern terms, instead of progressively construct standing alone
object.
As stated in “The resistance of the place form “, Frampton mentioned that instead of showcasing
buildings as a free-standing object, architects should study and understand the contextual features
in order to adapt the characteristic of the site. According to Frampton, the physical space of region
and the place where the communications between people are not identical. [pg.24] Once applying
important regionalism to the planning, architects ought to take into account the thought that there's
no limitation of physical space and also the characteristic of place can't be consisted of associate
independent building.
“Critical regionalism necessarily involves a more directly dialectic relationship with nature, more
than abstract, formal traditions of modern avant-garde architecture allow.” [pg.26] Other than
responding to the site context, author also emphasize on architecture should associate more with
local culture and the qualities of the landscape. While making architectural structure on the natural
setting, each of these two parts ought to be integrated with one another so as to attain relationship
between its idea, instead of producing a free-standing object. The bionomics, atmospheric
conditions and the allegorical aspect will determine the topographical characteristics and the
cultural estate of any distinctive site. Societies are identified by the “place-form” that conceived by
the equity betwixt natural milieu and the cultural estate.
To conclude, I agree on Frampton’s idea on critical regionalism, notably on his assertion on the
relationship of a building to its site and location in a sociological context, focusing on how building
should merge with its neighboring context while respecting the local culture and site context.
Building isn’t just a piece of effigy, or a statue exists without any purposes, it should reflect the
regional culture and site context by using design elements such as sustainable design, passive
design, shading devices, low embody design and natural material etc. to help to build a better
society and a better world.
