The Venus Fly Trap
The Venus Fly Trap, Dionaea muscipula, is a carnivorous plant native to the bogs and swamplands
of North and South Carolina(Halpern 2). It preys on insects with its uniquely shaped terminal
portion of its leaves. Each leaf has two primary regions: the leaf–base and the trapping
mechanism(Souza 3). The flat typical leaf–like region is called the leaf–base and it is capable of
carrying out photosynthesis and grows out of the ground. The trapping mechanism, called the leaf–
blade or lamina, at the end of the leaf that is composed of two lobes that are hinged together by a

The trapping process can be divided up into four distinct phases: the initial snap, the tightening
phase, the sealing phase, and the reopening phase(Meeker–O'Connell 3).
The trigger hairs are the indicators for the plant to know when there is possible prey in the trap. If
two trigger hairs are touched or one trigger hair is touched twice within a short period of time
(around 30 seconds or so), the trap will spring closed within a tenth of a second(Halpern 6). The
amount of time the trap takes to close varies greatly with temperature, light, plant health and other
factors, but a healthy trap in warm conditions closes very quickly(Stefoff 5). The initial snap of a
Venus Fly Trap is one of the fastest movements in the plant kingdom(Meeker–O'Connell 7).
The details of trapping process are quite complex and research is still being done to figure out
exactly how the process works. Some ideas include extremely fast cellular growth to make the trap
close and a "snap–buckling instability" that the plant controls itself(Kudlinski 7). Recent research
done in 2005 at Harvard University shows that the Venus fly trap relies on a biochemical and elastic
process where the leaf stretches itself to a point of instability and once the trigger hairs are touched,
the plant releases water into the leaf that results in the leaf slamming shut(Souza 6).

Bradbury wrote, "They hated her pale snow face, her waiting silence, her thinness, and her possible
future." (Bradbury 1954). This describes how Margot was an outcast just because the kids were
envious of her opportunity. They were resentful that she might be going back to Earth and see the
sun again. Even though the children didn't believe that the sun would come, they did want to see it.
So they were intolerant of Margot's opinions and insensitive of her feelings. Her isolation is
significant to the overall theme in this story because it can show that resentment can cause people to
do mean things to one another.
Furthermore, Bradbury portrays that backbiting and ignorance made Margot vulnerable to
harassment when the boys in her class locked her in a closet. The kids just didn't accept that Margot
knew that the rain would stop. They teased her and told her that what she was stating was not true,
that everything was just a joke. Bradbury wrote, "' Nothing!' he cried. 'It was all a joke, wasnt it?' "
(Bradbury 1954). The kids harassed her by telling her that what she is saying is not correct, making
her feel vulnerable. But it all got out of control when the kids decided to lock Margot in a closet.

The age of the planet Earth is estimated to be about four point six billion years old. Life on Earth is
estimated to have started one billion years later. Evolution has taken place since then. Evolving life
from simple forms into more complex forms through the course of time. It all began with single
celled organisms, prokaryotes. Later evolving in a period of two hundred million years,
cyanobacteria began to produce photosynthesis. And life went on, evolving, adapting to its home.
However through this course of time, mass extinctions have taken place on planet Earth. One of the
most recent mass extinctions, has as a matter of fact left various amounts of evidence of the
creatures which roamed the Earth at that time. Such magnificent creatures which varied from a very
small size to giant sizes. Creatures which are now known to humanity as dinosaurs. The name of this
extinction was the Cretaceous–Tertiary Mass Extinction. This extinction took place roughly sixty
five million years ago. It has not been too long since this incident compared to the life span of the
Earth. And yet it is still unclear how this extinction occurred. Paleontologists to this day, debate on
how this extinction occurred. A major factor on what caused this extinction to occur was an impact

In both situations, she continues to be sexualized. While The Baron Docteur dresses The Venus in
nice clothes and teachers her French, behind closed doors he uses her body to his own advantage.
The Baron Docteur's intention to macerate The Venus in order to make a name for himself shows his
lack of care for The Venus' treatment, and this is the same for the Mother–Showman. The Mother–
Showman didn't care about The Venus at all; everything was okay as long as she continued to profit
off of the Venus. Both of them exploited The Venus and then threw her away after she fulfilled their

by Anne McClintock, argues that the portrayal of male and female sexual pleasure varies between
the two. Not only are they portrayed in different ways, but the way that they're seen socially and
historically is also different (McClintock). McClintock argues that the denial of orgasms for women
is not because they lack the ability to, but because of views of gender. McClintock wants to expose

McClintock argues the idea that women are denied sexual pleasure by giving historical background
of female orgasms, and personal experiences. McClintock begins by telling her story of the first time
she tries to find porn for women. McClintock walks into a magazine store looking for women's porn
magazine, but is left empty handed. McClintock sees many men leafing through magazines with
"images of spread–eagled women" (111), but similar magazines for women aren't found.
McClintock doesn't give up hope and asks the woman at the counter for help, and when the woman

Picture yourself on planet Venus – named after the Roman goddess of love – which contains no love
for any differences. In the short story, "All Summer in a Day", the author Ray Bradbury describes
nine–year–old children who live on the planet, Venus. They are used to the fact that it has been
raining for seven years. Every seven years, the sun comes out for two hours. Otherwise, every day is
gloomy. One of the girls, Margot, moved to Venus when she was four. she used to live on Earth,
where it was sunny very often. Later on, Margot stands out compared to the other children because
she has a memory of the sun. Since she remembers the sun, the other children treat her differently.

Additionally, the author shows the theme of jealousy when Margot feels isolated and lonely.
Bradbury writes, "Now she stood, separate, staring at the rain and loud wet world beyond the huge
glass." (Bradbury, 1954) This evinces how she isolates herself from the other children because of the
way she feels. As a result, her differences affect her and make her feel alone. Furthermore, the
author makes an emphasis on how she stands separate from everyone to show how separate Margot
feels. The significance of this quote is that Margot doesn't feel welcome on Venus. She misses the
sun and how it makes her feel. The kids always made her feel separate from them because she was
discrete. The children were jealous of her memories of the sun, so they felt that she should be
thankful that she remembers it.
Lastly, Bradbury shows the theme of jealousy when her classmates regret locking Margot in the
closet. Bradbury writes, "They stood as if someone had driven them, like so many stakes, into the
floor." (Bradbury, 1954) Bradbury uses this simile to show how regretful the children are after they
left Margot in the closet after the sun came out. They just stood there, astonished at what they have
done. They forgot that they had left her in the dark closet because they were so busy playing out in

What about the Genetic makeup and DNA of a carnivorous plants different from other plants.
What makes a carnivorous plant different for starters, for those who don't know what a carnivorous
plant is, it's a plant that instead of getting nutrients from the soil and absorbing nutrients from water
it gets its nutrients from eating things. An example of this would be the Venus fly trap, instead of
getting nutrients from the ground it eats fly's and other insects to get the nutrients it need, but the
real question is what about their genetic makeup makes them different from regular plants. Here is
one of the ways it's different from regular plants.
Firstly, what makes them different is their genes and example of this would be the pitcher plant.
Unlike the Venus fly trap, the pitcher plant has insects go inside it and they get stuck in the liquid it
produces. This plant has two different kind of leaves the first one being the normal leaves which
regular plants use, but the leave that is different is what forms the pitcher like shape of the pitcher
plant which performs the catching reactions. Researcher's sequenced the plants DNA and looked at

Abstract The main Magellan spacecraft mission objective was to map 70 % of the surface of Venus.
The mission succeeded in mapping 98% of the Venus surface. This paper analyzes the resolution
and timing aspects of the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and radiometer modes of the Magellan
spacecraft. Also, the transmission method of data from Earth to the spacecraft and vice–versa is
discussed. The incidence angle effects on the cross–track resolution and signal to noise ratio are
analyzed. The simple models of the cross–track resolution of the SAR and radiometer modes are
derived. The function of the Venus surface emissivity is presented. Next, the resolution element size
(pixel size) is modeled as the function of the spacecraft height.
Overview of the mission
The Magellan spacecraft (Venus Radar Mapper) was launched by NASA on the 4th of May, 1989.
The main goal of its mission was to map the surface of Venus by employing the synthetic aperture
radar method. The first stage of the mission began on the 15th of September, 1990. The objective
was to map 70% of the Venus surface through a left looking method. This stage ended on the 15th of
May, 1991. The Magellan spacecraft mapped 83.7% of the Venus surface. Right after the end of the
first stage, the spacecraft was reoriented by 180 degrees such that a right looking method could be

activity. The surface is about 300 to 600 million years old. In 1970 the European space Agency
performed missions on Venus that gave indication of volcanic activities in Venus. They have

area in Prentiss Woods and another. Our initial ideas about how to build a trap was that insects are
most commonly lured by bait, whether it was food or a smell. Our initial internet resources were

We used a small can of soda cut in half, a bottle of soda cut in half, and a tub for ice cream without a
lid. In all of the containers we put maple syrup inside them and used water to delude the syrup so it
was easier to get bugs out (if any were caught). Our final traps were the most successful of all of the
traps, catching a spider, salamander, and three other unknown insects. Trap 1 caught the spider and
one of the other insects. Trap 2 caught the two other unknown insects and Trap 3 caught our
salamander. We cannot figure what other species of bugs were caught or take pictures of them

The volume of Seymour's voice was loud and projected somewhat far. The pitch was high and
squeaky. The overall quality of the voice was by far not the best. He is someone with whom you
could only speak with for a short amount of time. Seymour would pause occasionally taking short
breaths only to continue with more choppy sentences. When Seymour defends Audrey against Orin
Scrivello DDS in the dentist office his voice was on the fritz. When the drill was turned on Seymour

to fool an audience is to erase suspicion from their mind. For instance if the audience is suspect that
you are acting than believability is already lost. I was able to pick up very small clues Miles used to

1. At first glance, the Moon and Mercury have similar surface features yet on closer inspection we
find that significant differences exist. Compare and contrast the surfaces of the two bodies and
outline their respective geological histories.
The geology of the moon and mercury are very similar due to certain key aspects, but there are also
a few qualities that differentiate the two bodies. The Moon has a radius of 1738km in comparison
with Mercury, the smallest of the major planets with a radii of 2440km. The average density of the
Moon is 3.37 g/cm3 that is consistent with basaltic silicates. Like Earth the Moon has a layered
system, consisting of a crust, mantle, and core. From the radius and the mass Mercury has a mean
density of 5.4 g/cm3 which implies a dense iron (Fe) core. Just as the Moon consists of an iron core
with a softer molten liquid iron outer core. The outer core is believed to extend out as far as 500km.
The Moons core only holds 2% of its mass. Since Mercury is low in mass there is less heat stored
from formation its core is probably sold rather than liquid. The lunar surface of the Moon is grey
and tan, with a low albedo. Albedo is the reflective properties of planets, satellites, and asteroids.

Literature Review On The Ecology Of The Venus Flytrap
In this research article the researchers Christopher R. Hatcher and Adam G. Hart studied the Venus
flytrap's seedlings capturing prey and researched the effect of the nutrient acquisition while the plant
was maturing. The growth of the Venus fly trap was also studied and they observed the plants that
had access and those that didn't have access to invertebrate prey. The researchers also provided
information on the Venus flytrap's juvenile stages on prey capture. Lastly, they studied the spectrum
of the prey captured. The purpose of this research was to gain more information on the ecology of
the Venus flytrap. The main results of this research were that the seedling start to form their first
traps after just a few weeks. From the plants that were able to catch their prey, 146/178 plants were
observed to have at least one trap on a plant close and reopen three times or more. The results
confirm that at a certain size of a Venus flytrap the sensory trigger hairs do not get stimulated
enough with smaller prey, showing that the traps are triggered only by a larger prey, that can
stimulate the hairs. The Venus flytrap's scientific name is Dionaea muscipula, it's traps are all
formed by two specialized leaves that are hinged, these leaves are known to be one of the fastest
movements in the plant kingdom. This plant is carnivorous, it is typically native to the subtropical

It preys on insects with its uniquely shaped terminal portion of its leaves. Each leaf has two primary regions: the leaf–base and the trapping mechanism(Souza 3). The flat typical leaf–like region is called the leaf–base and it is capable of carrying out photosynthesis and grows out of the ground. The trapping mechanism, called the leaf– blade or lamina, at the end of the leaf that is composed of two lobes that are hinged together by a midrib(Kudlinski 2). The trigger hairs are the indicators for the plant to know when there is possible prey in the trap. If two trigger hairs are touched or one trigger hair is touched twice within a short period of time (around 30 seconds or so), the trap will spring closed within a tenth of a second(Halpern 6). The amount of time the trap takes to close varies greatly with temperature, light, plant health and other factors, but a healthy trap in warm conditions closes very quickly(Stefoff 5).
